Halloween is one of the great modern horror films, but as a franchise its track record has been spotty at best, painfully bad at worst. Halloween H2O: Twenty Years Later, directed by horror vet Steve Miner (Friday the 13th parts 2 and 3, House), won't displace John Carpenter's original but it might help you forget the films in between. Miner certainly has: the film begins as if sequels 3 through 6 never happened. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising her role for the first time in almost two decades) faked her death and is now a single mom and headmistress of an exclusive California private school. She's also a secret alcoholic who lives in fear of her homicidal brother-bogeyman Michael Myers. Guess who decides to show up for a family reunion? The film begins with classic horror-movie exposition (the deserted college campus, Michael's escape, Laurie's waking nightmares) accomplished with some humor and style, but it's all setup for the second half, a driving roller coaster of stalk-and-slash thrills. There's little of the self-conscious genre referencing of Scream and at times the film is a little far-fetched--it is a slasher movie about a knife-wielding homicidal maniac who won't stay dead, after all--but Curtis transforms Laurie from a shrieking victim into an empowered, determined horror-movie heroine who's learned a thing or two from the previous films. Adam Arkin, Josh Hartnett, and TV cutie Michelle Williams (Dawson's Creek) costar, and the script received uncredited polish from Scream writer Kevin Williamson; Curtis's mom, Janet Leigh, pops up in a cameo. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars AT LAST A SEQUEL WORTH WATCHING!.......2007-06-04

This entry into the halloween series is probably about as good as it is gonna get! After two really really bad installments(parts 5 and 6) we get a pretty darn good sequel "Halloween H20". The best thing about the movie is that Jamie Lee Curtis is back and it makes all the difference. I still don't understand why they keep changing Michael's mask? It looked great in the first movie...why fix what ain't broke? This movie is really a 3 and 1/2 star movie, but they don't have that option. The DVD transfer is good, but I would like to see a 16X9 upgrade someday.

4 out of 5 stars Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the film that made her a star.......2007-05-20

In HALLOWEEN H20, Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the film franchise which made her a star. This is probably the best entry since "Halloween II", in terms of performances and the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis is back as terrorised Laurie Strode. To properly enjoy this film, you have to disregard the 4th, 5th, and 6th films which featured Laurie's daughter, Jamie Lloyd. There is no daughter here, instead we have Laurie's son John (played by Josh Hartnett).

The film picks up 20 years to the day of the original Haddonfield slayings. With a new name and persona, Laurie Strode is the headmistress of a private school in Southern California, yet still living with the daily terror of her past literally coming back to haunt her. Sadistic, unstoppable Michael Myers has tracked down her records and decides a little family reunion is needed, but this time, Laurie vows to ensure it will be the final showdown...

Jamie Lee Curtis perfectly slips back into the role of Laurie, and the rest of the cast is equally fine, including Jamie's legendary mother (Janet Leigh, "Psycho") in a fun cameo as the school receptionist, Josh Hartnett as her son, and Adam Arkin as her boyfriend. There are some brilliant set-ups and action scenes, and the tension is taut.

HALLOWEEN H20 originally set out to close the chapter on Laurie and Michael, but the franchise has continued with "Halloween: Resurrection", again with Jamie Lee Curtis.

5 out of 5 stars Halloween H20-TwentyYears Later-Zsendsational movie-still.......2007-05-15

The cast of actors-charactors blend in so well with suspense-its just unbelievable. Ms.Jamie Lee Curtis and the cameo appearance of her mother working together is very nice to see-and historical (Ms. Lana Turner was in the orginial movie of the notorious thriller, "PSYCHO") and her appearance really contribute to the suspense to the movie-Halloween H20. And seeing LL Cool J acting, WOW! Mr. LL Cool J is a multi-talented performer-he can do it all! I just love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars "I'm not who you think I am." Halloween: H20 - 20 Years Later.......2007-05-13

In 1998, Director Steve Minor put his stamp on the Halloween series. This is the entry, the sequel everyone was looking forward to, the return of Jamie Lee Curtis and when Laurie and Michael see each other again. "I'm not who you think I am." is exactly right, it truely is a great sequel even though it is part 7.

Laurie has a 17 year old son and she is the headmistress of a secluded private boarding school. 20 years after he first attacked her he came back, she thinks her son is the one in danger, he is, but she has more to fear than her son's life. Laurie stops running and faces her fear in the most amazing ending the series has ever seen.

Note that this movie completely ignores parts 3-6 so continuity for this entry as part of the series is completely screwed up. The acting is extra ordinary in this entry, the best acting in the entire series comes from this entry. Jamie gives her strongest performance as Lauries in this entry. And unlike the previous two entries Michael is top notch in this entry, Michael is really scary.

This entry doesn't suffer from much asside from giving LL Cool J a role this entry soars on all levels. The ending where she attempts to grab his hand is the most emotional part of the series.

The bonus feature "Unmasking the Horror" is very informative, but again, Jamie sounds like an idiot in her interviews and everyone else sounds smarter than her which is the exact opposite as on film where she appears to be the smartest person on screen.

In conclusion, this is the definitive ending to one of the longest running horror series. This entry has an A list cast and some great scares. Too bad the series continued on and on and on...

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good!.......2007-04-12

I liked it! While nothing can top John Carpenter's original Halloween -- sequels and remakes almost always fall short of our expectations -- H20 is suspensful and good, and the musical score includes a variation of John Carpenter's classic, errie theme as a reminder. Jamie Lee Curtis brings class and authenticity to the film, which is almost as scary as the original Halloween. The film's vibe succeeds without too much gratutious sex and gore, and keeps you on the edge until the end. I agree with the other reviewers who didn't like the other cheap sequels after Halloween II ... they just didn't have the same vibe as the first two films with Jamie Lee. This one is a worthy addition to anyone's Halloween collection.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-06-28

I've always enjoyed the "Highlander" movies, specifically the swords. I've been fascinated with swords since I was about 5 yrs old. Anyway, it's not a GREAT great film, but it does have a lot of good action in it. I'd recommend it to anyone who isn't scared of a little bit of head rolling, swords swinging, and general fantasy flicks.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER WITH EACH VIEWING.......2007-06-07

When I first watched "Highlander: The Final Dimension" a few years ago, I was disappointed. But after watching the film a couple of more times, I started to warm up to it more. True, its still the worst film in the series, but it is still a pretty good movie. The story is a bit weak due to the fact that the writers pretty much rehashed the plot for the first film. Still, the acting is great, and the battle scenes are pretty dang good. While non-fans will find little to enjoy in the film, established fans will be pleased for the most part.
Movie/DVD Grade: B

4 out of 5 stars Highlander3.......2007-02-20

An interesting and exciting movie. Brings another eposode to the story. Enjoyed it for the action and the detail. Worth watching and owning.

3 out of 5 stars A bit of a rehash, but an enjoyable sequel to 1986's "Highlander".......2007-01-05

Ignoring the events of "Highlander 2," this film picks up 9 yrs after the first. We find MacLeod living with his adoptive son in Morocco and satisfied that he is the last immortal and has the coveted "Prize." Soon he recieves a cognition that more immortals are alive (revived from "death" by an archeological dig) and packs for NYC for a duel with the evil sorcerer immortal Kane.

Made while the tv show was at its peak, this film benefits from the influence of its narrative and production style that had been refined over the years. Most of the characters and their relationships (especially the love interests) are thin and underdeveloped. The movie relies heavily on nostalgia for the 1st film for the impact of its emotional scenes. It also mirrors it's story to the point of being a near remake. The police hunt subplot simply drops out of the picture near the end and the villians were too silly. The special f/x are enjoyable but underused (Kane barely uses his illusions during fights.)

Still, the deja vu and pretention and trickery themes are well handled (though not explored as much as they could have been). Lambert is as appropiately meloncally and good humored as in previous entries, van Peeples is clearly having fun with his deliciously devilish over the top performance, Unger is quite attractive (even more so in the obligatory sex scene, of course), and Mako's dignified presence is, of course, a welcome addtion to the "Highlander" saga. The special f/x were good for there time and still fairly impressive today. The DVD is barebones though, and the picture has not been cleaned up.

The concept of immortals and their eternal battle are not explained in this movie and may leave the unintiated confused. Seeing "Highlander" first or doing a little net research may be required for understanding. Overall, a competent production and a worthy if underdeveloped and rushed sequel to the 1986 film.

4 out of 5 stars A true sequal to the original, although the first stood alone........2006-07-04

This is the Third installment of the Highlander movie series, and it is truly the sequel to the first. Againg, the first movie was never intended to have a sequel, but this one did a better job at addapting the first movies story line. Remember, the second movie (the Quickening) was never really intended to be a sequel and to be a different piece of the puzzle, although it was a calculation that misfired with fans and the box office because it did use sean connery and christopher lambert again. The action is good, and it stays true to the highlander themes. But, this movie essentially is the first one retold again, with the explanation that "oops, I guess there was one more alive", a lame cop out to get a sequel. But, again for the collector, you will need this movie in the collection. It is good as a primer to watch the first one again.

Either Dean Koontz shouldn't adapt his own bestsellers, or his 1983 novel Phantoms was a pack of horror clichés to begin with, or this movie is 15 years past its due date. What might have seemed fresh at the time of Poltergeist now feels like it was made from a derivative script with pages missing. Plagued by reckless leaps of logic, the movie starts with adequately eerie atmosphere and a perversely twisted performance by Scream 2's Liev Schreiber, but decays into a familiar hash of gross-out effects, resulting from the annihilation of a small Colorado town by an evil force known as "The Ancient Enemy." In a dreary role that insults the twilight of his distinguished career, Peter O'Toole plays a paleobiologist whose crackpot ideas have become tabloid fodder, but he holds the key to conquering the beast. Or does he? Sure enough, an obligatory coda leaves room for anticlimactic doubt. Phantoms has a few genuinely creepy highlights, including a devilish beastie resembling an angry flying scorpion, and horror fans will surely find something to admire, but everyone else is advised to proceed with caution and lowered expectations. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars Don't Waste your $.......2007-06-17

This is one of the worst and most unwatchable movies I have ever seen-right up there with Battlefield Earth and I Dreamed of Africa. I picked this up at Blockbuster, stupidly paying money for a rental and just could not make myself watch the whole thing. I am a cheapskate and I never do this. It's playing on the WB right now as the requisite bad sunday afternoon movie.

I'll just ask the obvious and say what the #&!! was Peter O'Toole doing in this? Perhaps this past sin is why he was shut out at the Oscars this year.

When will I learn? Every Dean Koontz movie I've tried to watch is awful-interesting premise but really really predictable and intellegence insulting plot and dialogue. You can't really blame the actors, they do the best with what is clearly excremental scripting and directing. Even more pitiful and disappointing than Steven King movies.

3 out of 5 stars Not As Bad As The Reviews Would Have You Believe!.......2006-10-11

Is this an all-time horror classic? No. Is it one of the greatest sci-fi horrors ever made? No. Is it a terrible film? No! In fact, I thought the film was a fun and entertaining flick. This is not a film to get all excited over, however, I did think the film had some pretty good suspense in it. And as for the one star ratings--that's ridiculous. This film was not that bad. In fact I have it in my collection. [As with every film I have written reviews on]. I think the film could have been done better, but hey, it's still a very interesting and suspenseful film.

I must admit I did not read the book. [Most of what I read is non-fiction]. Therefore, I cannot compare the film to the book as many reviewers have. But then most of the books I have read are never like the the films anyway. And as one of the reviewers wrote, 'It does make for a very entertaining film.' I found myself in a bit of suspense, and was looking forward to how this 'Ancient Evil' was going to be dealt with. I really enjoy Peter O'Toole's acting, and thought he did a decent job with his role. As for Ben Affleck, he wasn't as bad a many reviewers have written. I recommend you rent the film first to see if it is your taste. However, I thought it was pretty decent. [Stars: 3.5]

2 out of 5 stars A let down after the book..........2006-04-28

Standing on its own, this movie was pretty bad - poor acting, poor script, silly special effects, etc. However, when compared with the excellent Koontz book it's based on, the movie's dismal quality really stands out. It's as if they took out everything good about the book and threw in some silliness to compensate.

To sum up the movie in one word: terrible. Please do your self a favor and buy the book instead!

4 out of 5 stars Dean Koontz' Phantoms.......2006-03-14

This is the ultimate "Blob" movie. Unlike the original Blob with Steve McQueen (one of my favorite actors) and all the re-makes that have followed... This version is a very sophisticated, eloquent thriller. Although, the evil entity is never refered to as "a blob" or "the blob", and we are spared the sight of the big blob of jello mowing people down. Nevertheless, a blob by any other name is still a blob. The only caveat is that this entity is inteligent and has an over-inflated ego. Great cast, good plot, too bad the quality of this DVD transfer was lacking in clearness and resolution.

3 out of 5 stars Phantoms (1998).......2005-12-31

Director: Joe Chappelle
Cast: Ben Affleck, Peter O'Toole, Rose McGowan, Joanna Going, Liev Schreiber, Nicky Katt, Clifton Powell.
Running Time: 91 minutes
Rated R for science-fiction violence, gore, and language.

Dr. Jenny Pailey (Joanna Going) is bringing her younger sister, Lisa (Rose Mcgowan), home from L.A. to the small quiet town of Snowfield, Colorado. It's a peaceful environment to live in, with a population of 400, and the town has some nice ski resorts that make it a popular site during the summer. Upon returning, however, they discover everyone either missing or dead, with bodies that have a strange gooey look to it. They try to leave, but find their car and every other vehicle in town dead. Exploring further, they enter a bakery, where they encounter Sheriff Bryce Hammond (Ben Affleck) and his two deputies, Shanning (Nicky Katt) and Stu Wargle (Liev Schrieber). As they look further into town, they discuss what could have possibly caused this massive disappearance and all these deaths. The mysterious cause behind this hasn't ended, however, and as the night progresses, Shanning is taken by an unseen presence. Hammond and the others must now try to survive the night and hope they can get off a message to the outside world of their plight.

"Phantoms", adapted and written by novelist Dean Koontz, is a surprise on almost every level. It's a well-made thriller from Joe Chappelle, whose only previous major credit was "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers", usually regarded as the worst of the "Halloween" sequels. He may have seemed like a dubious choice to direct this film, but he does a fine job, creating heavy doses of suspense through some clever uses in the small-town setting and the suggestion of an unseen force lurking around every corner. The film is overall scary, working best when you have no idea what's causing this terror. The unknown is far more frightening, and Chappelle wisely plays this fun material for all it's worth, creating many eerie sequences, such as a slow exploration inside a hotel, the creepy use of Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces," and an encounter with a giant moth that is positively heart-pounding. For approximately an hour, Chappelle keeps mounting the tension level in, throwing in a good amount of horror and suspense into the proceedings in a relentless manner. Dean Koontz's script is somwhat successful. He builds in some intriguing ideas that are never fully explored, but to his credit, he had budgetary limitations and had to work with a 96-minute running time. As a result, the pacing is often so fast, you'll probably wish the film was at least another 15 minutes long. The script is sometimes heavily reliant on many horror cliches, including people walking into dangerous places alone, which is something a character in this sort of film should learn not to do; however Chappelle still handles these scenes remarkably well, creating suspense in certain spots when it often hasn't worked in other movies. There are also some lapses in logic, but they can be ignored rather easily.

The visual effects are quite good, such as the giant moth and the other strange creature designs. The setting is among the film's best assets. Smalll towns are usually great places to hide an unseen menace and this film pulls it off quite well. Many of the empty buildings, mainly the hotel and the police station, are great set-ups for some well-done setpieces. The cast is fairly good, and is one of the main reasons this thriller is moderately effective. The lovely Joanna Going is good as the film's strong female character. She brings dignity and class to her performance. Liev Schrieber and Peter O'Toole are perhaps the scene stealers, with their mostly successful attempts at humor. Schrieber is mostly over-the-top, and often creepy, while O'Toole is wry and sarcastic. It's a bit odd to see such a legendary actor in a film like this, but he plays the role in the right manner. The only weak link in the acting is Rose Mcgowan, who seems more suited for jokey, "hip" horror films rather than a serious one, and she's sorely out of place here. David Williams' score is creepy and good in creating some tension. It sounds somewhat derivative of the works of Ennio Morricone, but it still blends well into the film. The score is mostly a series of repeating notes, but it actually never becomes a slight annoyance, like John Carpenter's repetitious score in Prince of Darkness. The final scenes is among the movie's flaws. It's slightly darkly humorous, as it is intended to be, but this ending has been done so often, it's become rather tiresome by now. It's obvious Koontz has become influenced by far too many modern-day horror films. "Phantoms" isn't a classic film, since it has its own flaws and doesn't delve deeply into some interesting ideas, but it blends action and horror into a suspenseful and often scary mixture, with non-stop thrills and tension that keep the material fun to watch, even if the story's not always logical.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent atmosphere, top cyberpunk.......2007-06-15

I just found this series on the new internet TV phenomenon ''Joost''. What a grand shame this series got canned after 20 episodes, of which Joost has 11. This is basically Blade Runner, the series, which would have been great for T.V. The directing is very atmospheric, the acting is surprisingly believable.

4 out of 5 stars Originality a plus........2007-04-28

It is so rare these days that you can find a sci-fi series or movie that is original and not a remake or ripoff of someone else's idea. Total Recall 2070 was a complete original. My only complaint is where is the rest of the series?

4 out of 5 stars Total Recall 2.......2006-09-04

What can you say about the Arnie movie Total Recall in 1990?
What a great movie, however you view that movie it gave you a distinct feeling for the movie that someone else that viewed the dream differently got out of the movie. For Ages my friend and I would banter which is the real ending to the Arnie Movie.
Sadly this movie kills the mystique of the first one and proves me wrong. Clearly taking place in the future of the first one It shows Mars and Mars (No terraformed Arnie ending)

This Movie is still great all on its own. If you never saw the first one, you would still greatly appreciate this one even if you didnt understand the whole Rekall subplot.

I like to think of this movie as a combination of Total Recall, CSI, Blade Runner and Issac Asimovs Caves of Steel.

If you are a fan of the Arnie movie or just a Sci-Fi geek like me then this is a sure bet. Maybe with more and more people buying this movie which is actually a pilot to a whole series then the company will finally release the series on DVD

3 out of 5 stars MEMORY LAPSE.......2004-05-25

I didn't know this was the first two episodes of a television series, but after watching it, I certainly can see that it was. The production values are okay, but I understand some of the footage of Mars was taken directly from the Schwarzenegger hit movie which spawned this series.
Michael Easton, Nick Mancuso and Karl Pruner did commendable jobs in their roles, but the script was a little contrived and direction a little tepid for this kind of action film. Cynthia Preston is all but wasted in the typical wife who hates her husband's job and whose father was killed fifteen years earlier.
Not an unenjoyable movie, just flat.

5 out of 5 stars Way underrated.......2003-10-20

This "movie" is the first two episodes of an awesome TV series. It is a captivating blend of 80% Blade Runner, 15% Total Recall, and 5% Data from Star Trek. The plot is dark and intriguing. Character development is excellent. Cyberpunk 2020 role-playing fans should love this. I just hope that episodes 3-22 come out on DVD - the sooner, the better.

3 out of 5 stars it was ok.................2007-04-02

it was an ok movie nothing great or creepy. a girl returns to the home she left as a child to find out her friend died. she hooks up with the boy she was friends with and together they find out that the dead girl's mother is trying to bring her back to life. eventually the mother suceeds and she is back in the world of the living. the girl does't look very haunting or creepy she is more concerned about the guy she loved who is not trying to hook up with her friend. i had greater expections considering it was dealing with the religion/belief system but it isn't bad just not good.

2 out of 5 stars The dead will rise... or not.......2006-08-18

Asian horror has been the big thing for a few years -- long-haired ghouls, blind girls who see ghosts, and so forth.

But I doubt Hollywood will be rushing to remake "Shikoku," a creepy and pretty movie with too much shakycam. While the star Chiaki Kuriyama does a solid job, the movie is too vague, blurry and full of loose ends that never really get tied up. It feels like they were making up the movie as they went along.

Hinako, Sayori and their mutual crush Fumiya were inseparable as children, until Hinako moved away. Now ten years have passed, and Hinako (Yui Natsukawa) returns to the old hometown -- but she finds that Sayori (Chiaki Kuriyama) drowned some years before, and Fumiya (Michitaka Tsutsui) is still haunted by her presence.

But ghosts are rising around the town, and a muttering old priestess is making her rounds, reversing the seals on temples -- and breaking down the barrier between life and death. As Fumiya and Hinako start to fall in love, Hinako begins seeing Sayori's apparition -- and finds that Sayori's mother is determined to bring her daughter back to life.

"Shikoku" is a play on words -- the kanji logogram means both "four countries" and "land of the dead," which sounds promising for a horror movie. But don't expect it to ever be fully played out to its full promise.

It starts off promisingly -- ghosts are rising, a vengeful dead girl, a corrupted friendship, and a cave leading to the next life. Then Shunichi Nagasaki just seems to lose interest in the plot. Half the subplots are dropped, so don't expect any "land of the dead" stuff. And what is retained of the plot never really gets fleshed out.

The whole last act is a rush job, with few explanations, and all the character conflict between Hinako and Sayori left up in the air -- apparently Hinako just forgets how Sayori loathed her. But it is very beautifully filmed, once you get past the nauseating shakycam shots -- lots of misty forests, mountains, forests full of light, and mossy old shrines. As a visual experience, it's absolutely lovely.

Kuriyama gives a solid performance as Sayori, and she's very creepy and amoral. The only problem is that we're expected to feel sorry for Sayori, and frankly she's too whiny and vicious for that to ever happen. Natsukawa gives a decent performance, but her character is too passive and emotionless.

"Shikoku" had the seeds of a good supernatural thriller, but the end result is rushed and full of dropped subplots. It could have been great, but became a lame ghost story instead.

5 out of 5 stars PURIFICATION OF THE IMPURE.......2006-08-06

I like this movie quite frankly. Especially the religious aspects that were put into the movie. The story centers around a young woman [Hinako]who returns to her hometown in Shikoku. She is unaware that her childhood friend [Sayori] died at the age of 16. Hinako discovers that the mother of Sayori, who is a shameness is atttempting to bring her daughter back to life. In order for the mother to do this, she must traverse the islands 88 temples in reverse order. There is a lot of symbolism in the movie, especially some of the ones that the reviewer Zack mentioned. I especially liked the way that water is used in the movie, in which the purification and ritual prayers are utilized. For example, at the mouth of the cavern, we see an obelisk shaped stone with great religous importance, as water purification is important in Japanese religion, and especially during the semiannual ceremonies of purification at Shinto shrines. And although some of the mythological allusions are difficult to grasp unless one understands, or at least has some knowlede of the Kojiki and Nihongi, the image of the oblelisk in the water was not lost on me as a purifying image. This formal ritual of purification is a main theme in Japanese religion. In fact, traditionally, all Shinto shrines provided water for their worshippers. Maybe I have read to much into the movie, but for me at least I really enjoyed watching the movie. And as some reviewers have written, it is about 'ATMOSPHERE', not blood and gore.

5 out of 5 stars Shikoku a good scary movie.......2005-05-30

A story of friendship and about how Hinako finds herself sexually attracted to Fumiya. They're both startled when Sayori's spirit a gateway to a path of darkness a myserious ride of hell this film is dark and forboding and a rollercoaster ride ,it will scareyou that what its about work the story Sayori (Chiaki Kuriyama), the daughter of the village's spiritual leader, died in a mysterious drowning accident with leads to downward spiral to get to the meat of the story a scarefest and enjoyable movie highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS MOVIE.......2005-04-20

This movie had Kuriyama Chiaki from Kill Bill...and this is a very great movie that i had to own it...otherwise...a story that will get you going....

3 out of 5 stars "One bite and he'll make you flat chested!".......2006-06-09

In the annuls of bad career moves, George Lazenby has to rank pretty high on the list...after appearing in the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), he turned down an extensive deal from producers to appear in a number of subsequent Bond films as he thought the contract too demanding, the character would soon be out of vogue, and he would surely get other film roles...well, he was right, but I doubt Death Dimension (1978) was the type of feature he had in mind. Directed by Al Adamson (Satan's Sadists, Dracula vs. Frankenstein), the film features 1970s martial arts star Jim Kelly (Enter the Dragon, Black Belt Jones) in one of his lesser films. Also appearing is, as I've mentioned, George Lazenby (On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Saint Jack), Aldo Ray (The Green Berets, Psychic Killer), Patch Mackenzie (Graduation Day, Fighting Back), Bob Minor (Coffy, Foxy Brown), and Harold Sakata (Mako: The Jaws of Death, The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington), known best as the bowler wearing henchman 'Odd Job' from the James Bond film Goldfinger (1964).

As the movie begins we see a man inserting a microdot into an obviously fake patch of skin on a woman's forehead. Seems the man, named Dr. Mason, is a scientist who has developed a weather control formula for The Pig (Sakata), a master criminal type who intends to use the formula to develop a freeze bomb that he can then sell to the highest bidder. Mason, who developed the formula for altruistic purposes, has encoded all the plans onto a microdot, and now with the aid of his assistant Felicia (Mackenzie), hopes to get the information in the hands of the proper authorities. After a successful demonstration of the freeze bomb (we see some hapless schlubs tied to posts in the desert froze solid after the bomb is detonated), Felicia skips town, and Mason takes his own life. Oh yeah, the demonstration was witnessed by a gooberment agent who looks a lot like Gabe Kaplan, who subsequently gets wasted by The Pig's main henchman, a muscled, facially disfigured black man who likes to spit loogies, played by Bob Minor. Word of the agent's death gets to Captain Gallagher (Lazenby), who assigns Lt. Detective John Ash (Kelly) to the case. Before heading off to Reno (The Pig's home base), we get this wonderful bit of dialog right before John throws one into his old lady...

John's girlfriend: Baby, I love you so much.
John: I love you, too.
John's girlfriend: You will be careful, won't you?
John: I got to...
John's girlfriend: I don't think I can make it without you.
John: Well let's see if you can make it with me now.

Smooooth...anyway, after numerous assassination attempts (all failed ridiculously), John hooks up with a Asian named Lee (who couldn't act to save his life), and the pair set out to take down The Pig. Meanwhile The Pig and his men are searching out Felicia, desperately trying to recover the information so they can sell it to Aldo Ray, who's supposedly the representative of some foreign power, for fifty million dollars. What ensues is a series of car chases, gunfights, hand-to-hand combat sequences, and a helicopter chase, all leading up to a final, climatic showdown in the desert.

Well, I feel I must give this film, which has gone by a number of different titles over the years including Black Eliminator, Freeze Bomb, Dead Dimension, Icy Death, and The Kill Factor, some credit as the plot was so stoopid and wacky it was actually entertaining. Another plus for the movie is Al Adamson managed to keep things together reasonably well (for Al Adamson), spreading enough action throughout to keep me interested. The result isn't a great film, but better than what I would have expected. This wasn't Jim Kelly's, who did his own stunts here, shining moment, but I sure did enjoy watching him fight, and generally, when he did fight, it was usually against multiple opponents, none of whom could stand up to the power of his black kung fu. I did learn a number of things while watching this film, including the following...

1. White guys with afros look supremely idiotic.
2. Drinking malt liquor on a daily basis keeps you healthy and prolongs your life.
3. Harold `Odd Job' Sakata should never, ever be allowed speaking parts in films.
4. When in a fight Jim Kelly has no problem going for the crotch.
5. Giving someone the `thumbs up' sign over the telephone isn't as effective as doing it in person.
6. The Mustang Ranch, The Pig's headquarters in Reno, has some of the most unappealing and downright repellant working girls I've ever seen.
7. Aldo Ray would appear in just about anything to pick up a check.
8. When you're up against an arch villain named The Pig, it's funny to make numerous comments about his hygiene. Below is an example, as John rolls into town and contacts Lee...

John: How's our friend The Pig?
Lee: He stinks!

9. You can actually use a handgun to shoot a small plane out of the sky, despite the fact it's a couple of hundred feet in the air.
10. If you're a henchman, hucking dynamite from a small plane at the hero while he's chasing your boss, both men being on foot, might not be the best idea.
11. Harold `Odd Job' Sakata, despite his enormous, bulky physique, could actually outrun a lean, mean, and physically fit Jim Kelly.
12. Jim Kelly really likes hitting guys in the nads.

As I said, I thought the film was pretty entertaining, but in typical Adamson fashion, there's a whole lot that doesn't jibe. One minute we see our hero involved in a car chase and the next he's on a boat, chasing some thugs who just tried to cap his ash. Harold Sakata plays what has to be the most ridiculous villain I've seen this side of Mike Myers and his role of Dr. Evil in the Austin Powers movies. Given how difficult it was for him to keep his stuff together, I found it very difficult to buy off on him being the head of an expansive, criminal organization. One really funny aspect was, in a page taken from the James Bond villain handbook, was to give Sakata's character some sort of pet. Where Ernst Stavro Blofeld had his feline, The Pig has his turtle...oh geez...there was just something really unsettling about watching Harold Sakata gleefully stroking a little turtle. The upside of this is it gives him an opportunity to employ a giant, snapping turtle (you know, because turtles are his `thing') during an interrogation.

The picture, presented in widescreen format (sort of) on this Mondo Crash DVD release looks pretty shabby, as the transfer source appears to have been a well worn VHS tape. The aspect ratio looks forced, especially during the opening credits as some of them are cut off on the right side of the screen. As far as the audio, it's about as good as the picture, which is to say not all that great, but it is passable. There are no extras included on the DVD, but there are chapter stops, for what it's worth. All in all this is a fairly cruddy film, but it was also a lot of fun, earning it three out of five stars, even if it only deserves about one and a half.

One must assume that Christopher Lambert signed a contract forcing him to make this second sequel to the 1986 cult film Highlander. Unless he was paid an enormous amount of money, there is no explanation for his appearance in this abysmal movie. The original feature, which was graced with the presence of Sean Connery, was a critical yawn but attracted a cult following on the strength of its supernatural story line. An overproduced and muddled sequel followed, as well as a syndicated TV series and a video flick spliced together from the series. One would think audiences had had enough of this clansman who can die only if decapitated. This installment begins 400 years ago, when Lambert is in Japan perfecting his swordsmanship with the aid of another immortal, a wizard who soon loses his head to a scenery-chewing Mario Van Peebles. The ebb and flow of warring energies cause the wizard's cave to close in on itself, sealing the evil Peebles inside a mountain for four centuries. Flash to the present: Peebles escapes his rocky prison and immediately goes in search of the lethargic Lambert. Though shot on location in Canada, France, Morocco, and Scotland, this has all the production value of a student film. Under the helm of music-video director Andy Morahan, the movie is jumpy and jumbled, leaping from one ridiculous scene to another. --Rochelle O'Gorman

3 out of 5 stars The Sequel To The Sequel, I Mean The Prequel To The Sequel, I Huh... Never Mind.......2006-07-19

Well thank goodness for a little return to sanity. There's no more planet Zeist in the storyline and Ramirez stays dead in 'Highlander: The Final Dimension', the third film in the Highlander series released in '95. Actually as things turn out this is not really the final dimension (i.e. installment). There's still one more to follow, fooled you again!

The third film is set up as a prequel to the second. MacLeod, still played by Christopher Lambert has left Scotland and eventually ends up in Japan where he makes friends with another powerful Immortal-sorcerer Nakano (Mako). As things always seem to turn out for MacLeod's friends, Nakano is killed by a rival Immortal-sorcerer named Kane (Mario Van Peebles) setting up a showdown between the Highlander and Kane.

This film is definitely not as good as the original, but it's a far cry better than the previous sequel. Some good fantasy, action/adventure fun for Highlander fans. It's not just swordplay anymore, now sorcery has been added to the equation.

4 out of 5 stars The third movie is the real sequel to the first one.......2005-12-28

Don't get me wrong, I like the second movie, but more like an imaginative science fiction story. This one, also called he Sorcerer, is the real sequel of the first movie, that continues the mithology as it really is in our world. The plot is inspiring, and it have great action scenes.

1 out of 5 stars Highland Garbage........2005-12-09

This film makes no sense, and really doesn't fit into the highlander timeline.
it starts off 400 years before and Mcleod is hanging out in a cave in fuedal japan with some sorcerer Dude., how he got there is a complete mystery.
then in walks the bad guys, another bunch of sorcerers and they are immortal. Well there is battle and our hero wins out and the cave collapses.. Cut to 400 years later and an archaeological team discover the cave and the sleeping immortals awaken, their clothes still in pristine condition after all the centuries, must have been sprinkled with pixie dust. The main bad guy Kane, kills the other Dudes and then teleports to New York to hunt Mcleod, oh and Kane now speaks fluent English.
Usual crap then insues and mcleod saves the day.
absolute crap-don't waste your money.

3 out of 5 stars A Battle Through the Ages..........2005-09-10

After managing to cultivate a massive cult following, the 'Highlander' franchise seemed to be doing well. Though the original film "Highlander" is beloved, the sequel "Highlander 2: The Quickening" was panned by most fans (that is until the release of the Director's Cut), but despite the lackluster reaction of the fans to the sequel, the tv series that was spawned brought many back into the fold. So, it really should come as no surprise that Dimension Films would choose to release another Immortal adventure with "Highlander: The Final Dimension". With the release of this movie, which is actually set before the second film, many fans thought that this would redeem the franchise. Not to disappoint this movie did redeem the franchise in my opinion, and actually serves as a direct sequel to the original film, allowing audiences to forget about the events of "Highlander 2: The Quickening".

"Highlander: The Final Dimension" takes place in the present day, and Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) apparently had been tricked into believing he was the only Immortal remaining after the events of "Highlander". Now, an enemy from Connor's time spent in feudal Japan has tracked MacLeod down in the present day, and is determined to take his head and receive the Quickening from Connor. Now this evil Immortal, Kane (Mario Van Peebles), will stop at nothing to take his revenge on Connor, even if that means killing Connor's new girlfriend (Deborah Unger) or his adopted son. Whatever it takes to win, because 'In the end, there can be only one.'

Many fans felt that "Highlander: The Final Dimension" did a decent job of bringing the franchise back into modern days and allowed them to ignore the events of "Highlander 2: The Quickening". However, other fans thought that this 3rd film in the 'Highlander' franchise still didn't manage to recapture what made the original film so great, while others felt that it simply copied the first film. Personally, I think that "Highlander: The Final Dimension" was a good continuation to "Highlander" and did an good job of redeeming the franchise after the 2nd installment. So, basically if you are wanting to watch the 'Highlander' series, here is the order to view the movies in. First of course is the original film, "Highlander", followed by "Highlander: The Final Dimension", and rounding out the series is "Highlander: Endgame". Now, if you want you can watch "Highlander 2: The Quickening" and if you do, view it as an alternate reality in the 'Highlander' universe, otherwise it could ruin your view of the franchise as a whole.

Though not as good as the original film, "Highlander: The Final Dimension" is a good follow-up sequel and redeemer for the franchise. Recommended for fans of the 'Highlander' franchise, or casual viewers that enjoyed the original film or are just looking for a decent fantasy film. However, if you have not seen the original film, you probably should before you watch this sequel, so that you understand the backstory involved for Connor MacLeod.

"Highlander: The Final Dimension" is rated R for violence, language, and nudity/sexuality.

3 out of 5 stars The best sequel yet, but nowhere near a good film.......2004-01-03

Some fans will strike me for this, others will clap me on the shoulder, but in my opinion, HIGHLANDER III: THE SORCERER is the only trustworthy, even average sequel to HIGHLANDER. Let's face it - HIGHLANDER II can't even be considered a sequel, while HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME was a complete waste of potential.

Released in the U.S. as HIGHLANDER: THE FINAL DIMENSION, H3 has immortal Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert, back and better than ever) realizing that he didn't win The Prize, and that some immortals still remain: one of whom is evil sorcerer Kane (Mario Van Peebles). After Kane is freed from a 400-year slumber, he journeys to New York City seeking the Highlander. There MacLeod must do battle again. The game may have changed, but the rule remains the same: in the end, there can be only one.

First of all, let me say that while it's nowhere near a good movie, HIGHLANDER III is very entertaining and actually quite fun to watch. It's almost even a remake of the first film. Everything we want to know is explained (including why we have HIGHLANDER sequels!), and ... *sigh* Deborah Unger is included ...

Surprisingly, the film was also the only HIGHLANDER movie to get a PG-13! (The director's cut, however, is back to an R for a couple of sex scenes)

HIGHLANDER III also bears the most resemblance to HIGHLANDER: THE SERIES, which was, at the time, being filmed. It also features Loreena McKennit's "Bonny Portmore", one of the most beautiful songs ever written, which was featured in H:TS and later in HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME.

For every 1 good review of this film there are 10 bad ones. I think you'll just have to rent it yourself (Director's Cut, only) and see what you think. I thought it was the only reliable HIGHLANDER sequel yet.

The rule still remains: there can be only one. And so far, it applies to the sequels as well.

1 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT A KUNG FU MOVIE.......2004-11-14

I JUST ORDERED THIS AND I GOT A LORENZO LAMAS MOVIE FROM 2001, NOT THE KUNG FU MOVIE FROM 1976. BEWARE!!!

3 out of 5 stars Murder mystery with kung fu in old China.......2001-11-26

MASK OF DEATH (aka SHAOLIN DEVIL AND SHAOLIN ANGEL, 1979) is a well-made costume tale about a series of murders that offers just enough fighting to barely qualify as a kung fu film. Detailing the fate of a family decimated by the murders, it follows the efforts of a brother and sister to identify the murderers and avenge their family. They are helped by a secret agent, masquerading as an assassin (Wong Tao), and encounter numerous surprises along the way, culminating in a final battle with an unlikely enemy. It's packed with characters, incident, subplots and flashbacks, but, while never boring, is never very exciting either. No one bothered to string the incidents together in any cohesive order. Key people disappear for long stretches and we're not always sure who the main characters are supposed to be. When we learn finally who the villain is and why the murders occurred, it's too late to develop any dramatic tension or suspense.

Tung Wei is credited as co-fight director and also plays a young scholar who goes off, after his father's murder, to learn kung fu from a Buddhist monk. When he finally reappears to join the heroes, his kung fu doesn't help much. Overall, the fight scenes lack the vigor, imagination and relentlessness such scenes require. Wong Tao, normally quite a firebrand in his films, including THE HOT, THE COOL AND THE VICIOUS, in which he played a vaguely similar character, is too restrained here, trapped in a wig and period costume, spending too much time brooding and lamenting a childhood spent working in a brothel (seen in flashbacks). There's far more melodrama than a film like this is generally comfortable with.

All that said, however, the film is beautifully photographed, designed and costumed. It's a consistent visual treat, even when the narrative sags. The Crash Cinema DVD offers a very good letter-boxed transfer of an original print with sharp imagery and striking color. However, the print is extremely scratchy in parts, with occasional speckles and scratch lines streaking vertically through the film. Some parts, however, are not so bad and look almost pristine. The DVD case features a picture of Yasuaki Kurata, a Japanese actor/fighter who often starred in Hong Kong movies (SHAOLIN CHALLENGES NINJA), but doesn't appear in this one.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Cung fu classic, but...........2001-10-04

This is an entertaining Kung fu flick, but it has allot of scratches and lines throughout the movie. I've seen older kung fu flicks in better condition. There was no effort in remastering it. This is the only copy of MASK OF DEATH on DVD right now so if you really want it just be aware of the condition of it.
Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars excellent film.......2001-10-04

i bought this one on a whim because it was cheap
i was not dissapointed
i'll watch again and again and again
really fun

5 out of 5 stars a flick so dope it has an alias.......2001-08-25

aka "Shaolin devil, Shaolin angel", this movie is worth at least 2 titles and 5 stars. The cinematography in this movie is masterful, especially for being so old ('76), and depicts wong tao and chen sing (not my favorite of actors, but perhaps the finest work of his career)in many confrontations and battles. dvd is of great clarity and quality, except for some non-invasive, but visable verticle lines. And there is actually a descent storyline with some almost tarantino-style flashbacks. why is shoji kurata on the cover though?
