Big fun if you're old enough to remember the TV series from the early 50s. Ohterwise, probably not.

3 out of 5 stars Ramar's Adventures in India.......2004-08-19

Alpha Video continues their series of "Ramar of the Jungle" releases with Volume 3, the first of their releases with episodes set in India. Jon Hall returns as Dr. Tom Reynolds ("Ramar"), along with Ray Montgomery as Professor Howard Ogden and Victor Millan as their local guide Zahir.

"Ramar of the Jungle" is one of many television series from the 1950s that have had some or all of its episodes fall into the public domain. Given its public domain status, one might guess that a number of companies specializing in public domain material would have released this series on DVD. But that has not happened. Save for a small Canadian company (Cascadia Entertainment) that released a couple of Ramar episodes in 2003, Alpha is the only company that has made any commitment to this series on DVD and should be applauded for their efforts by all fans of the Ramar series. Their DVD cover art is great, too. That said, the visual quality of Volume 3 is of noticeably lesser quality than Volumes 1 and 2 which, though soft looking, were of reasonably good quality. The episodes are watchable, but just not as good as the first two volumes . . . high definition television this is NOT!

The episodes included on Volume 3 include:

The Mark of Shaitan (first episode set in India)
The Hidden Treasure
The Bride of the Idol
The Crocodile God of Kaa

The episodes are enjoyable and so Ramar collectors will want to include this disc in their collection, but casual fans of the series should stick with Volumes 1 & 2, which, visually, are more appealing.

DVD:

  1. Dixie Dynamite
  2. Rambo III
  3. The Super Cops
  4. Extreme Days
  5. Counter Measures
  6. The Sonny Chiba Collection: Legend of the Eight Samurai
  7. The Game of Death II
  8. Outta Time
  9. TOMIKI AIKIDO - D
  10. Jackie Chan Adventures - The Shadow of Shendu
