Customer Reviews:
Ugh.......2007-05-27
[...]Even if you agreed 100% with everything the film had to say it is still so horribly produced and put together that it makes it incomprehensible. One minute Reagan is running for president, then the next he's two months in, getting shot, with no mention about the winning of the election. One minute Reagan is walking with Gorbechev, and we are told he seems lost and confused, so much so that Gorbechev had to graciously escort him away from the press, the next minute we see some dramatic footage of the wall being torn down, with no mention of the leadup, or why it finally was destroyed. The gaps are just gaping. No context, no thread of continuity except, "The Beast"! Ohhhhhh, SCARY!!!!!!
Reagan may not have been the worst president we've ever had, but he certainly wasn't as great as this docuganda film makes him out to be. As if he single-handedly brought down the Soviet Union and ended Communism. As if no other world events led to the dissolution of the Soviet Empire, like it's collapsing under it's own weight, or the fact that many of the so-called Soviet puppet states were only loyal to Moscow so long as the guns and money were flowing in.
The distillation of 100 years of complex world history into some vague battle of the U.S. versus "The Beast" is so ridiculous. According to this film, the Beast is Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Mussolini, Bin Laden, etc etc. Never mind the fact that Russia fought against the Nazis with the U.S., and Bin Laden fought the Soviet Union with our very generous aid (which the film very skillfully fails to mention in it's final sappy "the beast still lives" segment). So apparently the Beast is both our greatest single enemy, and our enemies' enemy and thus our friend. Kinda weird how that works huh? Seems kinda like a load of crap don't it. That's because it is.
In summation, if you think the world is at war in some kind of ultra-binary struggle between good and evil, with everyone on Earth either firmly in one camp or the other, and that one day your magical friend Jesus will come down from Heaven to rain lollipops and gumdrops on the faithful, and fireants and dog doo on the wicked, and that Ronald Reagan is the single greatest man that ever lived with the exception of Jesus or Adam, of garden of Eden fame, then this film is right up your alley. If you are a rational human being who doesn't fall for garbage in the guise of patriotism and the American Way, then avoid at all costs. Do something better with your 2 hours of time than watch a blathering, incoherent documentary about a mediocre actor who became a mediocre president.
A disappointment.......2007-05-21
Im a big Reagan fan and im interested in history so I thought that I would like this movie. Plus the trailer for it was really great, possibly the best trailer I have ever seen. But I was very disappointed with the movie. It felt a little more like a propaganda movie then a documentary. Its not as bad as lets say a Michael Moore movie but I felt that it was pushing its message too hard. Still I dont regret buying this movie only for its topnotch bonus material.
Amazing work of Art, History, & Perhaps Prophesy.......2007-03-17
There are few films that really make you think about our place in history and the importance of being involved with the events of today more than this movie. This movie keeps you riveted waiting for what is next as all great movies do. But it also provides so much never before understood and seen historical information and context to bring a whole new understanding of the cold war and by extension today's war on terror.
It is not a pandering look at Reagan at all. It shows his strengths and his flaws. But more importantly it shows the ebb and flow of public opinion about something as sinister as the evil of communism over the course of 50 years through the eyes of one unflinching anti-communist.
It leaves us wondering how much ebb and flow we will see as world events unfold in the war on terror. Will we waiver in our ability to view terrorists as evil and let millions suffer as a result while we wait for a leader who is unwaivering enough and clear enough in purpose to assure it's defeat? How many millions will suffer while we wait and while America develops sufficient resolve to see that victory is the only answer?
This movie was great art and a great history lesson that is so relevant today. No matter your political views of Reagan, this is movie is an essetnial history lesson for everyone who enjoys freedom. Buy, rent, see this movie!!!
A Look at History .......2007-03-16
For someone who was born in the 1970s and did not understand what was happening with regards to the cold war, this was a lesson on history. I learnt a great deal about courage in times of conflict. I like the spiritual tone of the narrator. Thanks for the etras - the speeches made by Mr. Reagan. This product is worth it's price.
However I would not recommend this product for classroom instruction on history as it could be understood as being biased since it carries a proamerican / prodemocracy tone. This is a product for personal viewing based on individual choice and perspective.
A Roadmap for the Future (Evil is Powerless if the Good are Unafraid).......2007-01-26
The movie, In the Face of Evil, is a very well made look at Ronald Reagan's fight against Soviet communism from his early days as an actor to his time as President of the United States. It puts certain actions and policies of the Soviet Union in a league with the actions of such regimes as the Nazis. At the same time, it compares the early responses by governments to Hitler against the responses by governments to the Soviets. It shows how similar these responses were, and how the policies of detante and containment that were in place before Reagan took office just didn't work.
It also shows just how brutal and horrible Josef Stalin was. He literally had millions upon millions of Soviet citizens exterminated.
The movie is certainly beautiful looking, and extrememly stirring if you are a supporter in any way of the former President. Admittedly, it does gloss over some things. However, it is only a single movie and it does succeed in doing what it sets out to do. It's focus is on Reagan vs. Communism, which, I believe, will be Reagan's legacy. If you're looking for a more general look at Reagan himself, or an in depth look at the Reagan Presidency specifically, this is not the movie. But, if you want a moving look at Reagan's role in the downfall of the Soviets, this is the film.
There are some books on the subject of Reagan's war against Soviet Communism, and they are eye opening. The books tell you such thins as: for some time the Reagan administration leaked false technology information to the Soviet's through a spy whom the Soviets hadn't realized had been compromised. This forced the Soviets to spend money developing technogy the U.S. knew wouldn't work. Some of this technology went into a soviet oil pipeline, which later had a major mishap. There was also a government dept. set up that had every export to the Soviet Union bypassed through it. The idea was to ensure that nothing we exported to them could, in any way, be used militarily. I could go on and on, listing some of the covert ways the administration went after the Soviets.
What the books and this movie make clear is that the fall of the Soviet Union wasn't simply due to Reagan calling them "evil". There was an entire coordinated and covert economic attack on them, while, at the same time, Reagan was refusing to talk arms control until we were on a level equal or greater to that of the Soviets. The arms control agreements of the '70s were neve taken seriously by the Soviets. Following Reagan's buildup and his economic attack, the Soviets absolutely needed arms reductions to save their economy, but they were too late.
It becomes clear that the Reagan administration was a major reason why someone like Gorbacev was brought to power in the Soviet Union.
The best part of the movie is the subtext. The containment, detente and peace agreements that were made with Hitler didn't work. The containment, detente and peace agreements with the Soviets didn't work. For such policies to work, the U.S. or allies must be coming from a position of strength. The movie shows how so many really good intentioned people hope that evil (be it Hitler, Stalinist Communism or terrorism) can simply be wished away if they make nice and talk and use diplomacy. The movie also shows how, unforutnately, this is usually not the case. In that way, it provides a roadmap for the future.
"Evil is powerless if the good are unafraid," is a quote of Reagan's that is highlighted in the movie. I think that quote is very true, no matter what side of the aisle you're on.

FATAL FACE INDEED.......2007-02-28
GROWING PAIN's Tracey Gold gets to bear her fangs as a psychotic young woman who kills people and takes their identities. Her latest: she kills a young college student and assumes her place at a ritzy little college where she sets her sights on her roomie's hunky and rich dad.
Gold is quite good in the role, and she gets good support from Perry King as the dad and Shawnee Smith (SAW movies) as her goody two shoes roommate.
It's all been done before but Gold is so despicable, you want to see her get her just desserts...but...no spoiler here!
One of my favorite TV movies!.......2006-04-28
"Face of Evil" is one of my favorite made-for-TV movies ever! I Am so glad that is has finally been released on DVD. It is basically about a young woman who kills a college student and takes her identity. The cast is great, most notably Tracey Gold, playing very much against type, and Shawnee Smith. I am a fan of both of them, and they did not disappoint here. Mary Lambert is also a fine director, and I think she helped bring this film a notch above the rest. If you are a fan of Tracey, Shawnee, Lambert, or just good, fun thrillers, "Face of Evil" is the perfect film for you!
The DVD is in Full Frame format, but the transfer is pretty good. It has been digitally remastered, and features interactive menus and chapter selections!

Movie Synopsis.......2007-01-26
Synopsis: Along with his newfound allies, Hakuoro clashes with evil tyrants who challenge his very existence. As these despots attempt to destroy all that he holds dear, the masked one realizes this anarchy cannot - must not - continue. He digs deep into his steely resolve to return his people to peace. Nevertheless, as one army of fiends is dispatched, another is spawned from the depths in its place. Still one question looms ominous, but unspoken. What is the meaning behind the mask? Perhaps, it endows Hakuoro with the clarity of truth to do what is right. Maybe it allows him to keep his distance from a world where he is essentially an interloper. Or could it possibly hold the secret to his past that only his savior, Tuskuru, knew of before her demise? Find out for yourself in these five epic tales of Utawarerumono.

Henriksen highlight in.......2001-10-22
Veteran actor Lance Henriksen (Stone Cold, Aliens) again sets himself apart in this low-budget thriller with his "mad man behind the scenes" character that serves him so well. Always setting himself apart someway, be it dress, behavior or both, to create a stand-out bad guy. He is joined with other low-budget film greats that have proved their merit. Bruce Payne (Warlock III), Shannon Tweed (No Contest) and Jayne Heitmeyer (Sci-Fighters). Ms. Tweed kicks [behind] to save the day in this action thriller. But it's really great to get to see this many low-budget actors working together. Surely they had fun. The film is worth a look and one to buy if you collect Mr. Henriksen's works.
Fairly good sequel with competent performances........1999-11-07
As far as sequels go, this one doesn't quite match the fun of No Contest, however Shannon Tweed, Lance Henricksen and Bruce Payne seem to be having a good time with their roles. Worth owning.

As the third season of Inu-Yasha continues, the filmmakers introduce a new theme song and a potentially significant plot twist. Inu-Yasha defeats dark priestess Tsubaki when she merges with an ogre to assume a form that recalls a Kabuki demon. Kagura, the Sorceress of the Wind, discovers the barrier that protects Naraku's castle is weakening; if the barrier were to lose its strength, Naraku would be unable to control his servants. Kagura steals the shards of the Shikon Jewel from the legs of Koga the Wolf-Demon to use as bargaining chips to gain her freedom. Until now, Naraku has been presented as commanding virtually unlimited power and the absolute loyalty of his creatures. If Kagura, whom Naraku created from his own flesh, can rise against him, the storyline of Takahashi's "Feudal Fairy Tale" could take some interesting turns. (Unrated, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

OVERALL SOME GREAT EPISODES!
What's a family union?.......2004-08-30
'The True Face of Evil' is a great collection of episodes, both filler and plot-advancing.
'Giant Ogre of the Forbidden Tower' (episode 64) concludes the Dark Priestess saga. Tsubaki releases a (surprise) giant ogre from a forbidden tower at the temple at which she originally trained, where it had been sealed long ago. The best part about this episode, I think, since the fight was pretty standard fare, were the scenes with the young priestesses Momiji and Botan from the last episode.
In 'Farewell Days of My Youth,' Inu Yasha & Co. take down a giant centipede monster and are invited to rest with a huge family having a reunion (leading Inu Yasha to wonder what a family reunion of his would be like). However, something seems to be possessing the members of the group and making them attack each other, leading them to wonder what could be causing it. This episode is the first I've seen that kind of puts Myoga, the not-so-trustworthy flea, front and center.
'Naraku's Barrier - Kagura's Decision' begins just before the night of the new moon, the night on which Inu Yasha temporarily loses his powers. The others try to persuade him to keep a low profile, but he can smell Naraku not too far off and wants to meet him head on. The group runs into Koga and his gang, who are also hot on the scent of Naraku. Kagura, in pursuit of Koga's jewel shards, begins to wonder how it is they were able to get so close to Naraku's stronghold and if she herself might be able to break through the barrier and find freedom once and for all.
Extras include the usual production sketches and cast list, and the clean opening animation for the newest opening song, 'Owarinai Yume.'
These episodes offer a little bit of insight into more characters while keeping things moving. Overall, ones definitely not to be missed.

Values and Courage.......2007-05-22
Phenomenal production!
It not only portrays Reagan's admirable values and character, which most of today's politicians need to emulate, but it clearly establishes our how we must behave in order to conquer our current Beast, the Islamic fascists.
This should be a required viewing for all Americans, especially those who are too young to remember that period and are those vacillating as what we should do about the current Beast.
In the Face of Evil (10 stars).......2007-04-11
Simply the greatest and most important film I have ever seen. More an experiance, this film contains documents rarely seen. They must be seen to know the face of evil. An edge of your seat documentary. Non-fiction to rival the most fantastic fiction. See it, and know todays story as it plays to a history yet to be bound.
One of the greatest political documentaries you'll ever see.......2005-12-06
An accurate, dispassionate take on perhaps the most important topic of the 20th and 21st centuries - the battle between liberty and totalitarianism, and specifically Ronald Reagan's personal war against Soviet communism.
This work documents President Reagan's efforts, covert and overt, to destabilize the Soviet Union and free the billions in slavery to this evil empire. It begins by detailing the rise of 'the beast' and continues with the ineffective efforts of previous administrations to respond. Notes that this is handled is a completely honest and no-partisan way; President Nixon's secretive, suspicious nature and President Ford's ineptitude and self-denial are both presented honestly, as are the failings of Democrat administrations.
History is only now beginning to appreciate President Reagan's accomplishments but for those of us who actually remember the pessimistic depths to which America had fallen by the late '70s, it's almost inconceivable that anyone was able to not only revitalize American economic prosperity, military might and most importantly, pride and spirit, but at the same time land fatal blow after fatal blow to the Soviet Union. President Reagan freed billions of slaves, at a time virtually no one else believed it possible.
I hope this is but one of the first accurate portrayals of President Reagan's accomplishments.
Highly recommended!
The Best Documentary Ever.......2005-12-01
Ronald Reagan surprised his enemies when he actually did what he said he was going to do, a hard-to-find feature on a politician.
This movie masterfully chronicles the great accomplishments of a great president. I would've liked to see it on the big screen. This is a treasure in my DVD library.
The DVD features full-length uncut speech from the 60's where Reagan explained back then what he actually accomplished 20 years later. A man of principle, with a backbone of steel. An example for generations to come. As a side note, take a look at what Reagan had to say on that speech about social security... very interesting.
"In the Face of Evil" DVD.......2005-09-22
Last year, my Russian friend Nikita had tears in his eyes when he begged me and others to watch this video. I was so startled by his reaction that I did so. As I watched it, I remembered an incident of nearly 25 years ago. The night Reagan was first elected President. I had been swimming in my health club pool when I heard the news and was so horrified that I momentarily thought to drown myself. Instead, I prayed desperately that God would rid my country of this 'fool'. 25 years later, I am so glad God didn't listen. Because of Reagan, I got to see Hungarians and Poles dancing in their liberated countries, I saw ecstatic Germans smashing the Berlin Wall as it fell. And I saw a spectacle I never thought I would see in my lifetime (or any one else's), the hammer and sickle flag of Communism being lowered for the last time in Red Square. All because of a 'fool' I prayed God would get rid of.
"In the Face of Evil" tells how this all happened. Without hystrionics, without brutal political bias, it relates how Reagan saw what the rest of us didn't - that the 'emperor' of Russia had no clothes of real power. And how Reagan had the courage to act on that vision. I had always thought he was the Great Communicator - now I understand why he is justly labeled the 'Great Liberator'. And why my friend Nikita wept when he watched the tale of how this single man set so many millions free. Please watch it.

Great Movie, Became A HUGE Fan! But You May Not.......2005-05-31
Tomie is a compelling story about this "demon" girl that makes men go mad with jealousy over her. I am one of the unfortunate people who have not read the Manga comics, but watching the movie made me an instant fan. I have become a huge fan. Though not scary, this horror movie is more of a suspense and mystery movie. Not much horror at all, but it's a different story with the sequels. Everyone talks about the theme song to the movie, and I have to agree, it's one of the best theme songs for any horror movie I have ever heard, it's very memorable. It's as memorable as the theme from Halloween.
This movie is awesome, but don't watch it if you want to see a movie that will scare your pants off, because not matter how good this movie is, it's not scary. The sequels, on the other hand, are more horror oriented and you know you're watching a horror movie. If you want a thought provoking, intelligent movie, this is for you. Unfortunately, because the people who made the movie assume you have read the comics, you will walk away from the movie confused at some parts. It's a 100% guarantee that if you haven't read the comics, you will have some confusion. The movie asks so many questions, but gives so few answers. Despite the confusion, the movie still comes off as a great movie. This is for anyone who loves Japanese movies. If you're like me, you will become an instant fan of the film series. I love it!
Tomie: Rebirth fantastic film.......2005-05-30
known as The Girl Who Will Not Die - to an art student's loft for what she thought was a modeling job. The student makes the unwise decision to murder her, and eventually realizes that Tomie has been haunting him and his friends ever since which make this great somewhat mysterious mind play endieved slasher film .Makes this a superior fine piece of work that should be remade .but by far articulate good film which I very much enjoyed and anyone would be greatly entertained by this movie ,and should go out and buy it,
Great Tomie; Bad Movie.......2004-12-15
The fourth film attempt at the "Tomie" saga borrows a bit from the "Painter" chapter, as well as the "Hair" chapters. Unfortunately, as Tomie movies go, this one is no better than the three before it. While the direction was interesting, the cinematography above average, and the chills effective, the film ultimately suffers from a cast of really.. well, bland characters. Don't get me wrong -- the movie had arguably THE BEST Tomie out of them all in Miki Sakai, and the supporting actors did the best they could with the limited material the studio provided, but -- the lack of actual captivating characters and working plot really halts the whole movie from realizing its potential. Hideo was the second most intriguing person after Tomie, and he was gone within the first 10 minutes. I think the final product would've been much more entertaining had the script followed more into the Hideo and Tomie's "relationship", as opposed to his boring and dull friends. A straight adaptation of the manga chapter, in other words.
And then there's the "trademark" slow pacing that seems to plague every single Tomie film in existence. I don't know about you, but I really dislike how the characters seem to slow down to an almost zombie-like state once they become involved in the main plot -- it happened toTsukiko in the original, it happened to Yumi and Fumihito in "Replay", and now it's happened to Hitomi and Takumi in "Rebirth". And with the lack of an actual coherent plot, this slug race becomes much less tolerable, and borderline irritating. Only Tomie herself should be allowed to move in half-dead fashion because that's essentially what she is, but for everyone else? Oh, God.
Nevertheless, it's not all lost; the movie redeems itself by casting Miki Sakai as the beautiful bakemono we've all come to love. Right away, she had the traditional look that had been missing since the original film (it seriously sucks that they didn't get Miki back for "Forbidden Fruit", by the way), and her portrayal of the character was much more lively and spunky than seen before. My only gripe here is that Miki's Tomie is slightly older than the ones from the previous movies and the source manga (she was 16-17 year old there; she seems about 20-ish here), but then again, it's almost a non-issue when you consider the rest of the characters also look to be in their early 20's as well. Had to bump Tomie up a few years to fit her in, I suppose. The gore and psychological scares have also been amped up slightly, although "Replay" still reigns as the better "Tomie" film in that department.
All in all, if you're a fan of the "Tomie" movies so far and had little to no problem accepting them as what they are, then you will enjoy "Reborth". If your introduction to the character is from Junji Ito's manga, and you hated all the movies so far... well, things aren't much better here than before. If anything, watch the movie for Miki's performance -- you'll see why she's arguably the best Tomie thus far.
Why not remake THIS? It can only be an improvement........2004-11-14
This movie must be great, since they made so many sequels, right? All, I can make of that is that they saw it, and just had to save the bizarre and fascinating manga from the fate it suffers here, so they had to do it again.
There was so much potential here. A story of a beautiful and terrifying girl who is repeatedly murdered by men who "love" her, and she always comes back. A detective in the movie has been investigating her murder when he realizes that for many years, there have been murders reported with a victim named Tomie Kawakami, but none of the bodies have ever been found. (It says on the back of the DVD that the murders date back to when Japan first became industrialized, and while I'm sure that's probably a pretty significant plot point, I don't remember them mentioning it anywhere in the actual movie.) When the detective realizes what is happening, instead of finding the murderer, he instead becomes obsessed with finding Tomie Kawakami. He knows she must really be a smokin' hot babe to drive all those men insane with passion to the point of killing her so many times. This subplot is centered around the main character, who's boyfriend ditched her in high school for, you guessed it, a recent incarnation of Tomie. Then he cut her head off. Of course, she has this memory blacked out, like it's supposed to be some sort of a mystery we're trying to solve, but come on! We already know that Tomie has been murdered a bunch of times. So what else could it be?
I find the character of Tomie interesting, because she is like the hot babe in the slasher flick who gets iced in a way that many feminist theorists have interpreted as misogynist. The girl serves a purpose of looking good (sometimes getting naked) and then dying a violent death for our entertainment. We don't know anything more about her beyond our voyueristic viewing pleasure. But Tomie is the beautiful slasher victim come back to life to terrorize her killer, not by actually DOING anything, but merely by living, and unnerving him with her unshakeable presence.
There is a lot here to explore. There are so many unanswered questions about Tomie for us to ponder. For example, we know that Tomie is immortal, but why does she end up killed so many times? She seems to have an energy that causes men to fall in love with her, and go mad. But why does she use it? Does it amuse her to go back and stand in front of the person who saw her die by his hand? What is also interesting is the brutal way in which she is killed. You usually don't see her shot, poisoned, or hit on the head. The one who decides to kill her usually chops her up into pieces. So why do ordinary men all decide to do this? Does she want them to? We see her regenerate from a single chopped up body part. Does she want to be dismembered so that she can replicate herself? Or does she love to freak people out by appearing as a talking severed head? Tomie stays young forever, but does she need to be killed in order to keep from aging?
The manga explored many of these themes, but in a way vague enough to not give us any true answers. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't explore any of them, and plods along with some dull character development and minimal gore. Now, if you're reading this, and saying to yourself, "This chick doesn't understand Japanese horror subtlety, and just wants to see a bloody slasher flick," you're wrong. I love the subtlety of Japanese horror, and between gore and plot, I will always opt for the latter. But this doesn't have either one.
There is one interesting thing it does have, however. The main character is very beautiful, and I don't mean that in a geeky, "watch this cuz it's got hot chicks!" kinda way. But it gives more insight into what Tomie actually does. The main character had a boyfriend in high school who fell in love with Tomie, and I found it quite interesting how much more striking she looked in contrast to Tomie. In the behind the scenes footage, the actress playing Tomie was much prettier than she was in the film, which made it seem that making Tomie less attractive than her romantic rival was a conscious choice. It seems that Tomie has the power to manipulate people, specifically males, into falling in love with her, and believing her to be the most beautiful woman in the world, when in fact, she's not.
Of all the Japanese horror out there, why did this one come out in the US before Uzumaki? This is one film you'll never hear anyone begging Hollywood not to remake.
An utter disappointment.......2004-10-12
I tried, I really, really tried to watch this one. I can get along with the choppy pacing that I often find plaguing Japanese films (I still managed to love the Katakuris), but this one just didn't work for me. I know I was helped by a drink beforehand, but this movie and it's glacial pace just put me to sleep.
Here's what I don't get. While the original manga doesn't start with a movie-length story, it does begin with quite a punch -- and yet the movie starts up with some silly segment where the big shock at the end looks like something that would have been silly ten years ago. The potential was there, Junji Ito's initial first story could have been nicely expanded to include those human, emotional moment that make the horrific much more so.
Instead we get lots of people talking about Tomie as she spends too long regenerating a body from her severed head and then... oh, I have no idea what happened in the end, I was asleep and haven't been able to motivate myself to put the disc back in the DVD player. Instead of seeing this movie, try to find yourself a copy of the original manga instead.

The problems with the RuberRobo Gang come to a head here.......2004-01-01
Animation and story is okay for this series. I am however a pretty big fan of this line.
This is probably one of the more exciting discs in the series and appears to go just before the RoBattle Championchips in Vol. 10. What you will get out of this storywise is more about Space Medafighter X & Arcbeetle (provided it isn't obvious already) and why the RubberRobos want rare medals in the first place. As usual Metabee's attitude makes this series worth watching. As for episode order it appears to be somewhat out of whack. Vols. 1-6 cover what was shown on Fox Kids way back when. Vols. 7-9 cover 'filler' episodes that actually add to character development in the series. This is apparent when you watch for parts won from previous battles in these accompanying episodes.
Other bits of mild character development is that you will notice that Metabee has the respect of the other Medabot's he's gone up against. The last episode on the disc is fairly high on action and comes with the obligatory HUGE robot to fight. With only Metabee, Rokusho, and Arcbeetle standing against him.
