The balance of the earth's ecosystems is continually changing and no where is this more apparent than in fascinating world beneath the sea. Narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, this 41-minute IMAX film features breathtaking underwater photography from the coral reefs to the cold waters of British Columbia with a focus on underwater inhabitants, their symbiotic relationships, and the ever-shifting balance between predator and prey. While viewing this DVD on even the largest home television screen can't compare with the stories high IMAX theatre experience, underwater footage including a California mantis shrimp fighting off an octopus and a wolf eel eating a sea urchin is riveting in any venue. The footage of the mysterious once-a-year spawning of the coral reef in the Gulf of Mexico can only be described as truly amazing. Enchantment with underwater beauty gives way in the end to a chilling message about man's over-fishing of the sea and his leading role in the unraveling of the sea's delicate ecosystem. Description

Dive in! A sea full of wonders awaits. Famed oceanic filmmaker Howard Hall (Into the Deep) guides this immersive adventure that lets you swim alongside some of the most exotic creatures of the planet. Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet provide the narration. And an unusual array of finned and scaled stars are ready to steal every scene. Among them: Green Sea Turtles who gather off Kona so that Surgeonfish can strip harmful algae from their shells...an ominous, predatory Humboldt Squid that changes color four times per second like a flashing strobe light...an underdog Mantis Shrimp, whose claws have the speed of a 22-caliber bullet, in battle against a hungry octopus (the shrimp wins!). So many creatures. So many amazing stories. Sea them all.

2 out of 5 stars See in an IMAX theater; don't bother with the DVD.......2007-07-02

I was eagerly awaiting the release of this DVD, as I missed the film when it played in IMAX theaters. It boasted an impressive array of talent (including narration by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet and a score by Danny Elfman) and adoring reviews. Unfortunately, this is one of those IMAX films that doesn't survive the transition to the small, 2-D screen. Stripped of the 3-D effects and gigantic high-resolution image, it's deadly dull.

"Deep Sea" starts off strongly with a mysterious shot of ethereal jellyfish swimming in darkness. Then the next shot is of a huge grouper floating almost motionlessly, and Depp brightly tells us that "he's always hungry!" The film continues in that vein, with endless shots that were obviously staged for 3-D but appear oddly static and contrived on a television screen. The narration is utterly inane; it vacillates between PBS-style pomposities (there's the obligatory stuff about how we're devastating the ocean ecosystem) and anthropomorphic nonsense that seems to be aimed at small children. Depp manages to maintain his dignity, but Winslet comes off as condescending. Elfman's classical work "Serenada Schizophrana" is somewhat awkwardly adapted into a score that is barely audible under the narration.

Despite the phrase "deep sea" in the title, most of the film seems to be taking place about 20 feet under water. With the possible exception of a squid that changes color several times a second, there's nothing in this film that you haven't seen before.

2 out of 5 stars Nice photography, terrible commentary.......2007-06-23

Absolutely cringeworthy commentary from Mr. Depp and (especially) Ms. Winslett. People who write this sort of thing ought to be taken out and shot for their own good. Poor music score too. The pikkies are nice, but not a patch on the BBC's magnificent "Blue Planet". The environmental message at the end, while welcome, seems tacked on almost as an afterthought.

5 out of 5 stars An ABSOLUTE must!.......2007-06-14

While nothing compares to seeing this on the IMAX screen, this DVD is the next best thing. It will simply blow you away! The undersea colors and sounds are amazing. I didn't think of the creatures under the ocean as making sounds like animals on land do, but they do! I learned so much about undersea life, all in a context that was not just educational, but often amusing. Danny Elfman's sound track makes it all the more enjoyable - the man is a genius. The naration by Kate Winslet and Johnny Depp is perfectly adapted to what you're being shown. Fantastic for ALL ages!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not as deep as Blue Planet.......2007-06-12

This film will be appealing to youngsters because of its lovely photography. However, if you want to learn about the real deep, get the Blue Planet -Seas of Life Part 2 - THE DEEP. The Blue Planet - Seas of Life (Part 2)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing footage..........2007-06-11

This documentary was recommended by two of my students, so I bought it and showed it to all of my high school biology classes, and they loved it! For an educational video, it is interesting, entertaining and engaging, even for a class of 30 9th or 10th graders- and that's a pretty amazing thing! It really shows diversity in the ocean and how animals work together. There is some corny dialogue, but as a science person, I can appreciate that! Give it a view, I promise you'll love it!

John Wayne stars as a 19th-century sea captain out for revenge against a wealthy shipping magnate in this interesting and unlikely 1948 offering from Republic Pictures. Wayne plays the wronged Captain Ralls with a convincing bitterness that foreshadows his later work in the John Ford classic The Searchers, and his grim portrayal of Ralls hits a high point when Ralls purposely wrecks his enemy's prize treasure ship. The painfully beautiful Gail Russell costarred with Wayne only the year before in The Angel and the Badman and delivers a memorable performance as the tragic Angelique. Gig Young also stands out as a crewman who eventually learns the truth about Ralls. Wake of the Red Witch shares similarities in both character and climax to an earlier Wayne picture, C.B. DeMille's Reap the Wild Wind, but this film has a more direct approach in exploring the complex motivations of its characters. --Mark Savary

4 out of 5 stars One of the best John Wayne films.......2007-02-25

I first saw this movie in a theater in the early 1950's [movies stayed on the circuit for years then - big cities, first runs, small towns, then part of double features, etc.]. I was under 10 and it was an amazing movie then. I have seen it many times since and I like it even better now. Sure, the special effects now seem clumsy and dated. But the story is a good one and the battle of wills between Wayne's character and Luther Adler's character is still one of the better done of this type plot device. Wayne was consistently underestimated for years by his peers and critics but the public knew better. Yes, among the hundreds of movies he's in, a good percentage of them are B specials. But, starting with Angel and the Badman [w/ the same lovely Gail Russell as in "Wake..."], he didn't have to bow to anyone. "Wake..." is one of his best along with [imho]: The Cowboys, The Shootist, The Quiet Man, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and maybe True Grit. Even the more venerated and more decorated actors of Wayne's era made clunk movies. And, not all the blame could be cast at the writers/directors... I'll be adding a DVD version of "Wake.." to my Wayne collection. It's a good one! {I'll enjoy watching this one with my grandson in a couple of years.}

5 out of 5 stars Wake of the Red Witch.......2006-11-03

A very interesting and exciting sea picture that involves intrigue, danger, adventure, and romance. What more do you want? In addition to all of the previously mentioned offerings you have a sea monster, ie; a giant squid which is only one of many obstacles that John Wayne has to battle to retrieve valubles located in a sunken freighter.

This John Wayne film is different and unusual in that John Wayne is not the all encompassing heroe that he usually portrays in films. He starts out as a somewhat greedy, deceptive person out to get what he feels he deserves from a former employer and rival, but in the end he finds redemption from his love interest, the very beautiful, Gail Russell, who starred with Wayne in "The Angel and the Badman", another fine Wayne western. Also, in the film is Gig Young, a great, "in my opinion", underrated actor who does a fine job as the character with redeaming qualities, and a friend of John Wayne in the film.

They don't make'm like this anymore! I'm sure you'll enjoy this film, pure adventure, and a film you don't have to analyze, just enjoy!

I recommend purchasing this film. You won't be disappointed!

3 out of 5 stars Duke 1, Squid 0 .......2005-06-16

WAKE OF THE RED WITCH has it all: An island full of half-naked Polynesian islanders, carved stone heads that stand twenty-feet high, a scuttled schooner laden with gold, the pearl god Tara-Tatu, breathless Euro chicks steaming it up beneath the vines and palm fronds on the RKO backlot, a succession of improbable flashbacks and John Wayne going mano-a-mano with a giant squid.
This movie is a high seas, wooden-ships-and-iron-men costumer that spends most of its time tracking the tempest tossed romance `tween the Duke and Gail Russell, and the bitter rivalry between Wayne and the skullduggerous Luther Adler.
WAKE OF THE RED WITCH is decently unmemorable in all respects, non-essential viewing for even the hardiest of John Wayne loyalists. It's filled with useless posturings and is based on a popular forgotten novel of the day. Others may find it riveting, but I spent most of my time trying to figure out how Wayne kept his toupee in place during the underwater scenes.

3 out of 5 stars Worth Viewing but Not Remembering.......2005-04-18

I am a big John Wayne fan. I love watching his movies. I enjoyed this one as well even though it is not a particularly good effort of his. It was entertaining but did not really catch the imagination.

If I remember correctly, this film is a semi-remake of one he did jsut a few years earlier. Compared to that horror, this one is excellent but don't try to compare it to some of his greater works like "The Quiet Man", the cavalry trilogy or even "Donovan's Reef". Those are great and memorable; this one is merely an afternoon's mindless entertainment, soon forgetten in the detail if not the minutiae.

THe story revolves around two men with a feud over a woman. In this case, both men are involved in shipping in the South Pacific in the days of sail. Wayne commits an act of barratry (piracy conducted by a ship's own crew) against the ship of his rival. The rival wants revenge but so does the Duke. In the end, the sea sorts it all out.

Purchase this movie if you are a diehard John Wayne fan who must have all his work. Otherwise, rent it.

5 out of 5 stars Garland Roark's Novel Brought to the Screen.......2005-03-30

This seemingly obscure 1949 movie produced quietly during some of John Wayne's greatest years of stardom is an overlooked excellent and well written drama. The movie ties into the original story and actually opens the original book and begins the narration of Chapter one at the hands of the first mate. The story revolves around scuttling a sailing vessel "The Red Witch" that contained a cargo of five million in Gold Bullion. There is competition between the owners and Captain Ralls (John Wayne) who plays an ambivilant character who sides with whatever group is most advantageous at the time. The story is told from the perspective of the first mate and utilized the "flashback" technique similar to "Casablanca" but spends considerable time filling you in on how the present situation developed. Although this is in glorious B&W, the island scenery and romance of the age of sail work wonders along with casual romances and adventure to make this a great and interesting film to watch.

Two years after unleashing The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms upon New York City, master special-effects creator Ray Harryhausen turned loose a giant (albeit six-armed) octopus on San Francisco, and the result is another enjoyable atom-age adventure that should please fans of vintage science fiction. Kenneth Tobey, who battled The Thing (From Another World) in 1951, stars as a Navy captain who pursues a monstrous octopoid (sextapoid?) after it attacks his atomic sub. After it wreaks havoc with shipping lanes, he tracks the creature to San Francisco for a final showdown. Scripting by George Worthing Yates (Them!) and Hal Smith and direction by Robert Gordon are perfunctory at best, which gives the always-reliable Tobey and co-star Faith Domergue little to do, but this is Harryhausen's show, and his monster, though budgetarily restrained, is still impressive. Younger audiences weaned on digital FX may find this creaky, but nostalgic viewers will enjoy its simple thrills. --Paul Gaita

Description

A giant stop-motion-animated octopus (with six arms) attacks San Francisco. A pair of scientists and a nuclear sub captain try to stop it before it tears down the Golden Gate Bridge. Stunning special effects by Ray Harryhausen.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SO IT ONLY HAD SIX TENTACLES IT IS STILL A CLASSIC!.......2007-03-08

If Ray Harryhausen had the buget they have for FX today, who knows what he would have been able to do! The story from what I've read was that the producers of the movie didn't have enough funds to make a 8 armed Octopus. You would never really know this unless told,as the Master Harryhausen was very clever in hiding the beast's missing tentacles. One of my favorites as a kid and it still holds up. The DVD transfer is good with some very cool extras.

4 out of 5 stars Uh Oh! It's a Giant. . .Sixtopus?.......2007-02-05

Ray Harryhausen is back again in this nifty and fun Fifties monster movie. Okay, so Columbia Pictures kept slashing the budget until the only way Ray could do the beast justice was to animate SIX arms (take a look at JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS' Hydra sequence and that'll give you a good idea of how much more time, and in Hollywood that means how much more money, it would have taken to keep EIGHT arms constantly moving and in character!) Well, whether there are six or eight arms, this big ol' beastie still manages to wreak havoc on San Fransisco and the Golden Gate Bridge (classic sequence!).

The great Kenneth Tobey is in the lead, Faith Domergue and Donald Curtis bring up the rear for the main cast, cuz ya gotta have some story to keep everyone still until the Sixtopus arrives. They all handle the lines well, keeping this admittedly preposterous tale anchored on terra firma.

And the DVD has some keen bonuses, too! THIS IS DYNAMATION is a promo film made to hype THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (and if you haven't, you know you gotta see this one, too!); THE HARRYHAUSEN CHRONICLES is a loving overview of the great man's career, narrated by Leonard Nimoy. There are also three trailers for Harryhausen films, and one for CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.

The Grand Master of stop-motion animation does it again! Get yourself some popcorn and a big soft drink and check out (ooooh! scary!) IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA! BIG fun!

4 out of 5 stars What an octopus!.......2007-01-09

A giant octopus coming out of the ocean depths to crush ships and eat their sailors! Wow, what a concept. Fun classic movie -- typical black and white classic monster movie that is entertaining, although corny by todays' standards. I think they are the best though - no matter what the movie industry can do today with special effects -- these old black and white classic monster movies are the best!

3 out of 5 stars Harryhausen's Octopus.......2006-12-21

"It Came From Beneath the Sea" is a black & white sci-fi film from 1955, featuring a little bit of stop motion animation from Ray Harryhausen. It's not my favorite film that his animation has featured in, but it has some interesting moments.

Thanks to H-Bomb radiation, a giant octopus has been forced out of its Pacific Ocean home, looking for fresh food to eat. Fish, according to the marine biologists of the film, have an internal geiger counter. Since the octopus had been exposed to H-Bomb radiation, the fish can sense it right away, and swim off before it can eat them. The octopus' hunger has sent it further and further into the ocean, and it is now causing trouble all over the Pacific. The US Navy are soon out investigating. Will they find the beast? Will they stop it before it causes any trouble?

Its not the most interesting film, but its okay. There's a lot of dialogue and wandering about, and when there are some special effects, its mostly tentacles. There's also a love triangle of sorts between a marine biology teacher, a navy officer and a scientist, which is kind of an odd dynamic.

Special features include the great documentary "The Harryhausen Chronicles", which crops up as a special feature on quite a few Harryhausen related DVDs. It's narrated by Leonard Nimoy, features interviews with Ray Harryhausen, along with George Lucas, Ray Bradbury and others, and covers Ray Harryhausen's life from when he was first inspired by King Kong all the way to his winning of an academy award in the early 1990s for his work. There's a bit of rare animated footage from various unfinished projects too, which was interesting.

It's okay, all up, probably not the first Harryhausen related picture to check out though.

4 out of 5 stars sensational sextapoid! tantalizing test tube!.......2006-08-22

this is a terrific example of harryhausen magic. missing appendages notwithstanding (and, let's face it, who would honestly notice if they hadn't been told?), the creature is a wonderful piece of animated model work.

i'm surprise that noone else has caught (or mentioned, at least) the blatant sexual innuendo! the initial flirtation scene, when the captain corners the female scientist in the lab, is a riot -- check out how she's handling that test tube! then he proceeds to light up a cigarette (despite the "no smoking" sign right behind him)... hrmm...

One of the most beloved American comedies comes to sparkling life in this fast-paced, stylish production starring Tony Award-winning Broadway favorite Nathan Lane (The Producers) and Jean Smart ("Designing Women")! While dining at the midwestern home of the prominent Stanley family, noted critic and social celebrity Sheridan Whiteside slips on their doorstep and injures his hip, leaving the city slicker confined to the house for an outrageous six week recovery period which leads to cockroach farms, an octopus in the cellar, a dinner party with ex-convicts, "The Penguin" and more madcap mayhem! Written by the classic comedy team of Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, this razor sharp farce remains pointed and side-splitting today. Pull up a few extra chairs and invite some guests for dinner and a show; the fun is about to begin!

Nathan Lane practically explodes with bile as Sheridan Whiteside, a tyrannical radio celebrity who has been trapped in a Midwestern household by an injured hip. Whiteside rails entertainingly at the quavering family he's stuck with, but the play really kicks into motion when Whiteside's secretary, the only person who can stand to work with him, falls in love with a local newspaperman, forcing Whiteside to hatch a scheme to keep her by his side. Expertly crafted by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, The Man Who Came to Dinner zooms along. Lane (The Birdcage, Mouse Hunt) plays the part with his personality cranked up to 11--he rattles off each sneering barb with acid bombast. The production was originally broadcast live from Broadway, which gives it a genuine crackle of energy. Natasha Richardson and Liam Neeson act as hosts, providing some historical background to this classic comedy. --Bret Fetzer

    5 out of 5 stars A Hilarious Masterpiece--Nathan Lane at his Best.......2007-02-17

I had caught the last half of this video on public television's Masterpiece Theatre, and for many months my wife and I watched for it to be released on DVD. Turns out that, as outrageously funny as the last half was--it's that hilarious from the opening scene to the closing credits!
If you've seen Nathan Lane in The Bird Cage, you'll have an idea of the side-splitting comedy that he brings to the stage or screen. The Man Who Came to Dinner put him in an utterly different character, but one just as over-the-top, and just as outrageous.
For a Nathan Lane fan, this one is not to be missed. For anyone who likes a hilarious comedy, this is one of the best!

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Funny, Great.......2007-01-03

This recording from a recent production is amazing. Nathan Lane is great and larger than life, as usual. The rest of the cast does wonderful jobs. This is a treasure!

    5 out of 5 stars Strong Ensemble.......2006-11-10

I suggest that any group looking for a strong ensemble piece to perform take the time to watch this production of "The Man Who Came to Dinner". The actors gel magnificently! Even the penguins!!! Nathan Lane is at his finest and Jean Smart has never been better. This DVD is a great gift idea, or would be fantastic as a classroom study..

3 out of 5 stars "Godd**n it June! When will you learn that I'm always kind and courteous?!".......2006-01-21

The lead character in this play is too mean. I knew the story was about some cranky guy who has to stay with a strange family until his broken hip heals but this guy was too cranky. Ebenezer Scrooge cranky. He screams all the time, insults everybody in the room, viciously sabotages his secretary's chance at true love, turns kids against their parents and makes women cry it was all too mean spirited to be funny. I like cranky characters like John Barrymore in TWENTIETH CENTURY, he was cruel but at the same time likable, but this guy was a donkeyhole plain and simple.

Also 176 minutes is a long time.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable presentation of a Classic play.......2005-10-26

This was an entertaining presentation of a really enjoyable Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman play.

In the second act Nathan Lane settled into his character and realized that even though he was performing his role in a wheelchair, he was not completely immobilized from the waist up. Once Lane relaxed in his chair, he appeared to be able to concentrate and become more believable in his role.

While Lane is much more well-matched to the actual physical size of Alexander Woolcott (on whom his character of Sheridan Whiteside was based), he appeared very diminutive in the wheelchair. The chair itself was downsized in this production, no doubt to lessen the impact of the size optical illusion. This only helped a small amount though. In comparison to the impending presence of Monty Woolley who played Whiteside in the 1942 film offereing of this classic comedy, Lane looks very small.

Lewis Stadlen in the role of Banjo, played by Jimmy Durante in the aforementioned film, was a real show-stealer, totally lighting up the stage and the play with his presence.

Jean Smart, as actress Lorraine Sheldon, was interesting in her role, but didn't quite pull of the era of the tale in her portrayal. Sheldon appeared to be more modern than the other characters and the late 30's time of the play itself.

The presentation of historical information about the play by Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson between the acts was actually painful to watch. Neeson appeared to be drugged with perhaps Prozac and Natasha apparently was practicing the art of ventriloquism (or perhaps her lips were paralyzed with the same subtance as Lane's upper body parts during the first act). The Neesons sleepwalked and mumbled during the intermissions and their time can be skipped to retain the pace of the story.

Having said all this, this was an overall enjoyable offering and a great way to enjoy a play from the comfort of your home. I would recommend however, if you enjoy the story, you also watch the Bette Davis film of 1942, but definitely not back-to-back, as this stage play suffers by immediate comparison.

1 out of 5 stars Make Fun Of the film to survive Octopus........2007-02-17

This is a film that's soo bad that you'll want to naw your foot off in the process while watching it, the beginning starts out ok. but this film never could figure out what kind of film it wanted to be. i've seen dumb stupid bad films.
but Octopus takes the cake with it plot switching from one thing to another you'll be confused in no time. i feel bad because there are a few good actors in this dog but this film just drags them down with a lousy script. the only fun part of this movie is the effects to watch and that you could just rent it to mystery science theater it. believe me folks you may want to scream after the first half an hour of this movie or make up things to say in place to make this film funny. because that's the only way you'll survive Octopus.

2 out of 5 stars I guess, in order to be unbiased..........2006-08-03

I fell asleep once while watching this movie. It was after three in the morning, but I guess to be unbiased I can't give this even an average rating of three stars.

But, it gets two stars because 'Jaws' got one star, and this movie is STILL too good to even be in the same category as 'Jaws'

2 out of 5 stars You never see the Octopus.......2006-02-23

This was a horrible Science fiction film. You never see or hear about the octopus till the end of the movie. And the only time the octopus is worth watching is towards the last 15 minutes of the movie. However the monster is well created so I had to give this film at least 2 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money...catch it on TV for a free laugh!.......2006-02-23

Thanks to the reviews posted here by other viewers, I didn't waste my money on this stinker, but I felt it was my civic duty to warn others about Octopus. No one is joking about how terrible this movie is, so please don't freak out on any of us. Don't say you weren't warned. Now, if there is nothing on TV, you might be pleasantly surprised by checking out the Sci-Fi channel which seems to truly relish movies this bad (if you still don't believe me, look up Megalodon 3...so bad it's hilarious). I felt the beginning portions of Octopus were a bit slow. At the beginning, look out for the gratuitous pile of watermelons. Yes, you'll see it coming miles away. You know something is going to run into them. Bad acting, bad script, but in summary, if you can get to the scene where the octopus is attacking the cruise ship, you'll crack up. Again, don't spend a dime on this one...catch it on TV where you can opt to flip should you feel your time is being wasted.

3 out of 5 stars Octopussy, nonBond, and the blond........2005-11-06

It is the sort of movie you can only expect the stereoptypes of stereotypes, to the degree it must send itself up - eventually anyway.
For all we see it for is the monster - the good bits. 5% of our brains.
And then you can enjoy how much you hate it or them.
    Or you will be disoctoppointed.

Also Known As: Dead Eye Six. The monster reminded me of the one in DEEP STAR SIX, an 80s deep sea monster reel.

Besides all the other movies mentioned that were derived from this (why can't those big Hollywood blockbusters stop copying these films?), add The Abyss (of course) - derivitive diving dialogue, or DDD.

    An octopuss with jaws.
    Tongue in sack, err cheek.
    Neo nature unrealism.

A shame the beast didn't fall or rise for the blond. Then we coulda had a Titanic love affair... HUBBAH BUBBLE!

    THE MAKING OF...
See the making off, you realise how much effort went into films like this, increasing appreciation.
    A sea of plenty models.
The making of was actually one of the most thorough, satisfying ones - it showed everything I wanted, but the one big tentacle in action.

    Why aren't they called eightacles?

4 out of 5 stars An excellent DVD from VCI.......2005-12-17

VCI Entertainment has produced an excellent DVD here. The picture quality is sharp and crisp and the sound is nice and even. The color is excellent. Extras include two vintage Ronald Reagan Western trailers. The Blair team must have used original studio elements to produce this great DVD. There's not one flaw in the master material that I could detect. Now, about the movie itself... it's just a typical 1950's Technicolor South Sea island adventure yarn with beautiful scenery, great sets, and Virgina Mayo in a sarong. But, then, this is my favorite kind of flick... and at a bargain price.

    3 out of 5 stars my 2 cents.......2003-04-30

This is obviously a budget conscious movie, 98% filmed on a soundstage with a small number of actors with a limited wardrobe (the outdoor shots look like a backlot). This VCI release on DVD has vibrant color and pretty good sound. The plot is predictable and a little cheesy but so what it's got Virgia Mayo one of my absolute favorites, So anything I get to see her in is OK by me. So Far I've had good luck with the DVD quality on all the VCI releases that I've purchased. Thanks.

3 out of 5 stars At least the cops can do something.......2006-08-03

As many people will know, the cops in such movies as 'Jaws', 'Crocodile' 'Shark Attack' and many 'Halloween' and 'Friday the 13th' sequelstend to be deadbeats who basically sit around doing nothing. Well, the cops in this movie are actually doing things, regardless of the fact that the scope of what they're doing is very narrow and its hard to see exactly why anyone would need cops specifically to deal with crime in a river. At any rate, while people dump bodies into rivers, those victims would already be dead so I don't think cops would be able to help them.

Still, it's good to see movie cops actually doing something for once.

1 out of 5 stars Why do they even waste the film?.......2006-08-01

Either the people that put this movie out, think that we are all mindless morons, or they think we really like stupid movies. Either way you lose if you buy this movie. This movie has very little in the way of a plot. The so called actors don't know how to act. The only thing good is the music, it starts getting dramatic and you know another laughable scene is coming up. Buy if you have money and time to waste or if you want to give it to someone you don't like buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Jaws in newyork.......2005-11-11

This is the sequel to the original. It takes place in a populated area out in new york harbor. Instead out of in the middle of no where. There is a lot of gory not not a lot of action until the very end of the movie. In this movie another mutated octupus enters the Harbor of New York and the killings start again. This was not as interesting because only about a 1/3 to half the movie takes place in the water. The main charaters are normal every day people there are no terrorists or millitary people or secret goverment aggents in this one like there were in the orignal made a year earlier. If you like this movie I recommend you see the other horror movies made by lion gate Octopus. Crocodile 2 Death Swamp, Spider 2 and Frality.

3 out of 5 stars EIGHT LEGGED FREAK.......2004-04-15

OCTOPUS 2 is a sequel that isn't a sequel; it has nothing to do with the original, and nothing is ever really said that indicates how this puppy got so big...but, as a run of the mill creature feature, it has its moments. I liked the rapport between partners Walter and Nick (Frederic Lane and Michael Reilly Burke), but found Walter's exit too quick; he had a nice panache the movie never returned. The effects are average; nothing startling, although the decapitation of the Statue of Liberty in a dream sequence was quite cool. The extended rescue of the kids on the bus (after the octopus' demise) was too long and anticlimactic. Not a horrible movie, but it won't make us forget JAWS!

2 out of 5 stars What were they thinking?.......2004-01-24

I have to say, this is by far, one of the worst sea creature movies I have seen. I didn't even bother to rent it, I watched it on Scifi. It looked exciting, but I was wrong. The Octopus itself hardly moved at all. Its tentacles were the ones that did the moving. Even if the theory of the movie was right, the octopus being swept from the sea, that would've been wrong if it killed people because Octopuses aregentle creatures and do not grow to enormous sizes. Even the first Octopus made more sense and was a lot more exciting. The only reason why I give it two stars is for the acting. Otherwise this below sea level bugdet film is a stinker.
