What would you do if you were an ATF agent (John Allen Nelson) who knew your bosses were skimming guns, which resulted in your thwarting a bloodbath hit on a Greek Mafia chieftain (Peter Oronati), whose wife (Brenda Bakke) you'd recently taken a liking to? Well, you'd take a temp job with the Greek Mafia if it were offered, wouldn't you? It could happen. And that way you could cozy up to the wife until things cool down at the ATF. Charles Durning adds a weighty presence to the proceedings. Kurtwood Smith does smarmy evil with relish. The violent denouement features many people yelling names with all the pained primalism of Stanley Kowalski crying, "Stella!" --Jim Gay

Coasting on the successes of Gods and Monsters and George of the Jungle, Brendan Fraser turns in yet another winning performance in this fish-out-of-water comedy in which Pleasantville meets modern-day Los Angeles, with predictably funny results. Fraser stars as Adam, who was born in the bomb shelter of his paranoid inventor dad (a less-manic-than-usual Christopher Walken), who spirited his pregnant wife (Sissy Spacek, in fine comic form) underground when he thought the Communists dropped the bomb (actually, it was a plane crash). Armed with enough supplies to last 35 years, the parents bring up Adam in Leave It to Beaver style with nary any exposure to the outside world. When the supplies run out, and dad suffers a heart attack, Fraser goes up to modern-day L.A. for some shopping and long-awaited culture shock. More of a cute premise with lots of clever ideas attached than a fully fleshed out story, Blast from the Past is also supposed to be part romantic comedy, as the hunky Adam hooks up with his jaded Eve (Alicia Silverstone) and tries to convince her to marry him and go underground. The sparks don't fly, though, because Silverstone is saddled with the triple whammy of being miscast, playing an underwritten character, and suffering a very bad hairdo. Fraser, however, carries the film lightly and easily on his broad, goofy shoulders, mixing Adam's gee-whiz innocence with genuine emotion and curiosity; only Fraser could pull off Adam's first glimpse of a sunrise or the ocean with both humor and pathos. Also winning is Dave Foley as Silverstone's gay best friend, who manages to make the most innocuous statements sound like comic gems. --Mark Englehart

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very funny and entertaining romantic comedy .......2007-05-20

Perfect vehicle for Brenden Fraser. Good script, cast, comedic timing. I have watched it 3 times. I like more each time

4 out of 5 stars Fun movie with Walken and Fraser shining.......2007-05-14

The movie has a good pace, with a lot of screen time dedicated to
Fraser and Walken, who give fresh and fun performances. Spacek
also gives a solid performance. Some parts drag, like the whole
gag about the bartender turned cult leader, and Silverstone is just
god awful. But otherwise, there's some quirky humor from Walken's
paranoid character and also some good lines from Fraser when he
meets 'reality'. Cute and upbeat overall. An overlooked film that is
certainly better than most of the comedy garbage out there.

5 out of 5 stars good info.......2007-05-11

Lots of helpful info for everybody. You never know when you may be in this situation.

4 out of 5 stars Great romantic comedy.......2007-03-28

The first time I saw this movie I watched because of the actors. Alicia Silverstone, and Brendon Fraiser. I have enjoyed both actors in other movies, and Blast from the Past is no different. I am a fan of Brendon Fraiser, he has such a great comedic sense, and in this movie gives a great performance. I particularly like the scene in the 40"s dance club. The swing dancing really captured my attention. All in all this is a great movie to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Blast to Watch!.......2007-03-17

A paranoid scientist builds a full sized home in a large nuclear bomb shelter for his pregnant wife. A plane crash that he thinks is a bomb prompts him to whisk his wife down below, and they live in the shelter with enough supplies for 35 years.

But the father has an apparent cardiac episode in the early 1990s, and so they send their son (Adam) to the earth to buy supplies. He meets a beautiful girl named (surprise!) Eve, who befriends him and helps him to find his way in the world.

There are many funny and entertaining moments, and Brendan Fraser does a great job of playing the well educated, well behaved son. I lover it when he tells the guy at the memorabilia store to stop taking the Lord's name in vain. The store owner says "Why, do you have a problem with it?" Adam says "Yes, I have a BIG problem with it!"

Adam not only has a lot to learn from the world, but the world has a lot to learn from him. This was one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in a while.

To cite Gimme Shelter as the greatest rock documentary ever filmed is to damn it with faint praise. This 1970 release benefits from a horrifying serendipity in the timing of the shoot, which brought filmmakers Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin aboard as the Rolling Stones' tumultuous 1969 American tour neared its end. By following the band to the Altamont Speedway near San Francisco for a fatally mismanaged free concert, the Maysles and Zwerin wound up shooting what's been accurately dubbed rock's equivalent to the Zapruder film. The cameras caught the ominous undercurrents of violence palpable even before the first chords were strummed, and were still rolling when a concertgoer was stabbed to death by the Hell's Angels that served as the festival's pool cue-wielding security force.

By the time Gimme Shelter reached theater screens, Altamont was a fixed symbol for the death of the 1960s' spirit of optimism. The Maysles and Zwerin used that knowledge to shape their film: their chronicle begins in the editing room as they cut footage of the Stones' Madison Square Garden performance of "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and from there moves toward Altamont with a kind of dreadful grace. The songs become prophecies and laments for broken faith ("Wild Horses"), misplaced devotion ("Love in Vain"), and social collapse ("Street Fighting Man" and, of course, "Sympathy for the Devil"). Along the way, we glimpse the folly of the machinations behind the festival, the insularity of life on the concert trail, and the superstars' own shell-shocked loss of innocence.

Gimme Shelter looks into an abyss, partly self-created, from which the Rolling Stones would retreat--but unlike its subject, the filmmakers don't blink. --Sam Sutherland

Description

Called "the greatest rock film ever made," this landmark documentary follows the Rolling Stones on their notorious 1969 U.S. tour. When 300,000 members of the Love Generation collided with a few dozen Hell's Angels at San Francisco's Altamont Speedway, direct cinema pioneers David and Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin immortalized on film the bloody slash that transformed a decade's dreams into disillusionment.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT RESTORATION! GREAT DOCUMENTARY OF THE GREATEST BAND EVER!.......2007-06-29

This documentary movie is legendary, but now that Criterion has performed a complete restoration of visuals and audio, it is really amazing! I still prefer some live versions of songs on this DVD then any other live versions released! Watching this restored film on my 10 foot screen is like going back in a time machine to this insane concert. The Stones are in great form for the most part and there are some interesting extras. If you are a fan and do not own this.....BUY IT NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Chilling, Thrilling, and Impossible to Forget.......2007-05-29

This is not merely one great rock documentary -- it is one of the finest pieces of documentary filmmaking I have ever seen. The directors and cinematographer have truly captured the wildness, the drugs, the sense of abandon, hope, mystery, fear, violence, and joy -- all of it wrapped in a remarkable rock music event marred by the Hells Angels' tragic violence.

The sense of foreboding as the filmmakers capture the haphazard planning for this free Altamont concert is palpable -- I love the way the Stones' lawyer, Melvin Belli (wearing a very wide tie), attempts to negotiate a last minute concert site. There are so many impossible to forget images -- the Stones' listening to a play back of "Wild Horses" at Muscle Shoals studio; the stoned-out kids moving from amazement to horror as the violence unfolds; the boys listening to Sonny Barger call in to a radio station and justify the violence because the fans were "messing with our bikes."

There is great onstage concert footage too -- the Flying Burrito Brothers kick it off in fine fashion, then Tina Turner turns in a sexy performance, practically deep-throating the microphone, but by the time Jefferson Airplane gets on stage you just know something is about to go very, very wrong.

As the violence unfolds, to the onstage antics of "Sympathy for the Devil," things get very weird. Mick, onstage, calling for cool. Fans crying, mouthing to Mick "why?" silently, Keith and the boys still riffing as the beatings mount -- all captured brilliantly by the filmmakers.

The final piece -- Mick and the boys watching the concert footage in the studio -- is equally priceless and equally revealing.

Bravuro filmmaking!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL MOVIES EVER MADE. .......2007-05-29

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic Rock n' Roll concert movie entitled "GIMME SHELTER" by the band that millions of fans and critics the world over call THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD. I give you England's second most favorite sons and one of Britain's pride and joy's, T-H-E R-O-L-L-I-N-G S-T-O-N-E-S! "GIMME SHELTER" is a Maysles Films Inc. Production which was originally released in 1970 and directed by David Maysles, Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic film or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE ROLLING STONES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's most sacred classic anthems of all-time. THE STONES have also delivered some of Rock's all-time greatest live performances ever. THE STONES 1969 World Tour is considered by many Rock critics to be one of the all-time greatest tours ever. THE STONES 1969 World Tour was a complete triumph for the band. However, in the end, THE STONES 1969 World Tour would also prove to be one of the most disastrous, tragic and most fatal tours in the history of Rock n' Roll.

Altamont 1969 was the last choice to hold a free concert just outside the Bay area. The first choice was Golden Gate Park, than Sears Point Raceway before finally settling on Altamont Speedway. Seeing the movie, in my opinion, this free concert was doomed from the beginning. When you have lawyers and legal B.S. to deal with, you will have nothing but chaos in the end as the movie will attest.

Mr. Ralph "Sonny" Barger is and always will be the President of the Oakland Chapter of the Hells Angels. He may not remember me but I met him years ago through a mutual friend while living in California in the 1980's. Our mutual friend is a member of either the Sacramento Chapter or the San Jose Chapter of the Hells Angels. Mr. Ralph "Sonny Barger now resides in the Phoenix, Arizona area and is now currently a member of the Cave Creek Chapter of the Hells Angels. Sonny describes the hell that went on at Altamont not only in the film but in his book. His descriptions make you feel like you were actually there and at the same time, make you wish that you were never there. To actually capture someone on film being stabbed to death in front of the stage during THE STONES concert before our very eyes is beyond disbelief.

THE ROLLING STONES, on the other hand, were cocky and arrogant, and for a very good reason. The band was on cloud nine, victorious from the success of the 1969 World Tour. Who wouldn't be cocky and arrogant knowing that their band was the greatest show on earth at that very moment. However, by the time December 1969 rolled around the corner, the band was unorganized and many of THE STONES entourage and personnel were making decisions without THE STONES consent or approval. When you see the film closely, you will notice right off the bat that many decisions were being made without THE STONES knowledge. Again, when you have many people involved such as law enforcement, lawyers and numerous personnel within THE STONES organization, there's bound to be a mess up somewhere along the way. As the saying goes, "IN 1969, ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN. ONE NIGHT AT ALTAMONT, IT DID!

When THE STONES took the stage at Altamont on that dark and dangerous December night in 1969, little did they know that it would be one of the most horrific nights in the band's lives. I'm sure that THE STONES must have wondered if they would ever get out of there alive. I know that I would have.

When bands such as THE GRATEFUL DEAD, THE JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, SANTANA and THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS took the stage, the atmosphere was extremely violent resulting in fights and beatings taking place everywhere on site. JEFFERSON AIRPLANE'S own Marty Balin was beaten up as he jumped in the audience to break up a fight in front of the stage.

It was clearly obvious that the violent atmosphere was going to get worse as time rolled on. Rather than talk further concerning this legendary film, I would definitely hope that all of you readers out there will purchase this DVD movie and watch it for yourself in case you do not believe it. Believe me when I tell you that everything I am saying to you in this review REALLY happened. This film is by far, one of the greatest Rock n' Roll films ever made. When you watch it, you will see what I mean.

Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LONG LIVE THE ROLLING STONES! R.I.P. BRIAN JONES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars Documents one crazy concert.......2007-05-16

This all happened years before I was born so it's not surprising it took me so long to check out the documentary. After all this time, I'm glad that I finally did. And I'm glad that someone filmed it all so that I could.

Gimme Shelter is an amazing documentary. It starts out a bit slow, with the Stones watching footage of their concerts and listening to tapes of people calling into radio stations to talk about the event. Seeing their reactions is pretty moving, and just to watch Mick Jagger do anything is pretty interesting in itself.

As the footage of the concert itself unfolds, it starts out looking like one of the best events ever. A free concert with huge stars and all the drugs you can handle... but then things take a turn for the worse. And the amazing thing is that it is all on camera. The Hell's Angels attacking the crowd, and the crowd attacking the Hell's Angels... and Mick Jagger pleading with everyone to just "be cool".

What a stunning documentary. Check it out if you're interested in rock, history, or just plain good documentaries.

4 out of 5 stars Dramatic Documentary.......2007-05-07

The concert is hard to focus on as the spotlight turns to the murder of one of the concert goers, after that it's hard to appreciate the Rolling Stones performance.

The Man with the Screaming Brain is cult superstar Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead 2), who also makes his directorial debut in this loopy blend of '50s-style science fiction thrills and slapstick comedy. Campbell plays a businessman who meets an untimely end at the hands of a vicious Gypsy femme fatale, who has also done in her ex-fiancée, an KGB-agent-turned-taxi-driver. Mad doctor Stacy Keach provides a solution for both men by stitching together their brains inside Campbell's dome; with no other option but to work together, the pair sent out to find their killer. What results is a broadly funny and frantic showcase for Campbell's physical comedy skills, with Ted Raimi (Spider-Man, Xena) offering hilarious support as Keach's wacky assistant. Campbell fanatics will appreciate the DVD's extras, which include a featurette on the film's lengthy gestation (18 years from conception to completion), and commentary by Campbell and producer David Goodman; a trailer, behind-the-scenes footage, and storyboards round out the supplemental features. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars "The Hippocampus Is Experiencing Cerebral Flashes!".......2007-05-29

I loved Bruce Campbell in "Bubba Ho-tep," surely the strangest Elvis horror comedy ever made, so I decided to buy "Man With the Screaming Brain," and while not up to the level of peculiarity that "Bubba Ho-tep" reached, I think it's a solid four stars on the B-movie horror comedy scale. Bruce not only stars as American industrialist William Cole, but also wrote and directed this little gem, originally made for the Sci Fi network in Sofia, Bulgaria for $875,000. It features a largely Bulgarian cast and crew, and the depressing post-Communism sets add a great edge to the film.

The other cast members are wonderful in their roles: Tamara Gorski as the evil Tatoya, and her ex-fiancé Yegor (Vladimir Kolev) are perfect as the confounding duo, while Antoinette Byron as Jackie Cole is the perfect annoying rich wife. My favorite casting decisions were the scientists: Stacy Keach as Dr. Ivan Ivanovich Ivanov could not be more perfect, and his wacky assistant, Pavel, is played by Campbell's old pal Ted Raimi to great comic effect. The Russian (Bulgarian?) accent Keach adopts is better than average for a B-movie, and makes some words genuinely difficult to understand (in the line I used for my title it's hard to tell if he says "flashes" or "flushes" for instance); this added to the depth of the Keach character substantially. You may like Raimi's robot rap, but then again you may not; it grew on me in the second viewing.

The film starts with a horrifying cab ride through Sofia. The driver, Yegor, takes them through "Gypsytown" where he has to fight off a carjacking. During this outing he sees his ex-fiancée, Tatoya, and inadvertently sets an extremely unusual love quadrangle into play. I don't want to give away the plot, but as is pointed out in the commentary, if you follow a key piece of jewelry through the film, the rest of the plot unfolds around it. It is unusual for a large number of main characters to die in the first act of any movie, but that's the beauty of Stacy Keach as a crazed scientist. Keach is able to reanimate the dead and in the process creates a very gothic Frankenstein effect.

There are many comic relief moments in the film: I enjoyed the scene in which Campbell changes clothes in a dumpster; I also found the restaurant scene with the self-induced swirley in a revolting toilet, followed by a milk and ice bath to work quite well. I was not as enamored with the robot as Campbell was on the commentary; for me a little went a long way. I absolutely loved the fact that Campbell (as the creature) rode a pink Vespa (moped) with tassels on the handlebars during a key chase scene through Sofia; I also found the robot catfight in a bridal shop scene (more brides should carry pistols in their garters) to be relentlessly entertaining. The homage to Mike Tyson in a bar fight was also well done, as were the general right-versus-left brain problems Campbell encounters. The robot death scene was well done camp at its best, although it could have been edited for time a bit in my opinion. In the end the messy love quadrangle is resolved in a novel (though somewhat predictable) way that worked well.

The DVD has lots of great extras. The commentary track is very interesting, and I actually liked watching the film more the second time. There are several "making of" extras, and I especially enjoyed the account of the 18 year ordeal of getting the movie made: you wouldn't think that would be interesting, but it is.

The film started a little slowly (the characters are totally disagreeable in the beginning), but after I warmed up to it I really enjoyed it. It doesn't measure up to "Bubba Ho-tep," but easily gets four stars.

1 out of 5 stars Bruce Campbell In A Bad Film????.......2007-05-23

Yes its true this was a terrible movie. Filmed badly and the acting was terrible even for Bruce Campbells standard. I have been a huge fan of Campbells work for years but this movie was just plain bad.Sorry Bruce I had to say it.
Two thumbs down.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2007-04-11

While the average movie go-er might find this film distressing in its flagrant randomness and zany humor, if you like strange independent films, or any of the major actors, this will probably entertain you. I definately recommend watching the film through with the commentary feature on at least once. Bruce Campbell, particularly, is quite amusing, as he chronicles all the craziness and problems that this movie had from start to finish. You should also steer toward this film if you like campy sci-fi, marriage-crazed gypsy women, Bruce Campbell, or Ted Raimi, in particular. The violence is fairly low-key, and who doesn't love seeing Bruce Campbell try to ride a tiny pink Vespa?! I personally love this movie even more because of Ted Raimi, who plays the "mad" scientist's rather...special...lab assistant. He spends most of the movie consuming unsafe quantities of Red Bull, while stealing corpses and talking in a very amusing Russian accent (which dies occasionally, giving a very odd mix of Russian and Detroit-ish...), oh, and rapping (something which will probably only be found amusing by fans). You can tell that the actors are having a lovely time, and the woman who plays the evil gypsy lady does a superb job of looking seductive and flaming crazy at the same time. Overall, while bizarre, I thought this movie was enjoyable, and well put together. The dialogue is generally amusing and the acting, I thought, was quite good. Go watch it; if it damages your mind, don't worry, you didn't need those brain cells anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie for teens and adults.......2007-02-16

A librarian friend's review (from the Monroe County Library System webpage):

I read once that Spin readers voted Evil Dead II the best movie of the decade. It may have been ten years ago that I saw that poll. Since that time, I've seen all the movies in the Evil Dead series and am now a big Bruce Campbell fan. Bruce Campbell is all that's great about B-movie actors. He's a charismatic ham, aware that he's not the greatest actor in the world so he's just having a good time. You could say the same things about Chuck Norris, the Rock, or any number of action stars, but what Campbell has and they lack is his Looney Tunes sensibility. He looks like a man's man, but he's a goof at heart. He makes his directorial debut with Man with the Screaming Brain (2005) and keys into exactly those qualities fans want in a Bruce Campbell feature. The movie is manic Saturday afternoon sci-fi. It runs along smoothly until an end-of-the-movie chase scene that seems a little tacked on.

5 out of 5 stars So odd its great!.......2006-11-03

Prepare to be mesmerized by the oddity of the story, while seeing a film that purposely fakes a pretense of seriousness. It is a very funny movie, kind of a dry sardonic sense of humor. It is worth watching / owning.

This winning 1987 epic written and directed by John Boorman (Deliverance, The General) serves as a picaresque and semi-autobiographical remembrance of a boy's coming of age during the Second World War. Exhibiting a defiant and humorous take on life during the London blitz, the family of the young boy at the center of the story (Sebastian Rice-Edwards) is a close-knit and resilient bunch, undeterred in the face of the war and reveling in each other even as they hide from the incessant bombing. To be sure, there are some poignant moments in this childhood reminiscence, such as when the boy's older sister (Sammi Davis) falls in love with a Canadian, becomes pregnant, and marries him, only to see him taken away by the military police. And the boy's mother (Sarah Miles) serves as a strong influence in the boy's life as she leads her family through this tumultuous time. The majestic sweep of the film is contrasted with so many comic moments as the people in town go about the mundane details of their daily lives yet also engage in the most absurd rituals in dealing with the onslaught of German artillery, from taking the air raids for granted to wearing gas masks at school. Boorman doesn't dwell on the horrors of war; instead he celebrates the richness and resilience of the people he remembers so fondly. An adventurous and nostalgic slice of life, Hope and Glory is a superb and memorable film. --Robert Lane

Description

British writer/director John Boorman (The Emerald Forest) draws us into an astonishing and exhilarating portrait of his own childhood, set against the terrors of a London torn apart by the onset of WWII. Seven-year-old Billy Rohan (Sebastian Rice Edwards) finds his childhood to be atime of great dangerand even greater discovery. From thunderous bombings at his own doorstep andthe constant threat of Luftwaffe air raids to the landing of a German paratrooper in his neighborhood and the joyous obliteration of his much-hated school, Billy's young life is shapedand even enrichedby the one positive thing war has brought him: liberation from the ordinary. And though Billy is surrounded by decimation and the smoking remnants of ruined lives, his sense of enchanted wonderment and innocence in the face of man's most destructive folly affect him in a way that alters his life forever.

I've always loved this movie. I really don't know why, but it has to be that my papaw recorded off of HBO years ago and I watched it and it just reminds me of him so much. The movie is British so, its never played on TBS or USA or anthing like that here in the good ol USA. If you are into WWII era type movies its good for the collection. Just an entertaining movie to get a bowl of popcorn and relax w/ the Mrs.

First let me say that I am an Anglophile which may have something to do with my particular interest in this movie. Hope and Glory takes me back to a time that was at once Britain's most difficult and its best. It depicts the British spirit at its most gloriest. This movie has been watched and enjoyed many times.

5 out of 5 stars An Anthem to Endurance.......2007-02-16

Director John Boorman's semi-autobiographical elegy to the Blitz is a poignant, comical, and occasionally hard-core look at the realities of war through the eyes of a young boy. Given the roles of his wife and son in the piece, it's also a rather lovingly crafted family project.
We first meet young Bill Rowan (a rosy-mouthed, freckle-faced imp named Sebastian Rice-Edwards), the son of a closely-knit middle class English family, as he plays in the backyard of his London home on the day war is declared between Germany and Great Britain.
His little sister, Sue (Geraldine Muir, who could definitely pass for the daughter of David Hayman, who plays Bill's father, Clive) pedals about the backyard singing a pop ditty of the day, and his older sister, Dawn (a vivacious and overly-flirtatious Sammi Davis)angrily storms about trying to find her mislaid stockings as the children's careworn parents (including an emotional Sarah Miles as Grace Rowan)listen to a radio report of how their world is about to change.
Oftentimes, with the accompaniment of their friends, Mac and Molly (Derrick O'Connor and Susan Woolridge), we follow the Rowans through the emotional dilemma of whether or not to send Bill and Sue overseas to escape the air raids in those uncertain times, Bill's difficulties with intimidating authority figures(Susan Brown, Gerald James) in school, the disruption of a school day by an air raid, and a German pilot (Charlie Boorman) landing in a victory garden.
Air raids soon hit close to home and, and while Mr. Rowan is away in the Army, his wife and children endure a night of terror as Luftwaffe bombs shatter their windows; the following day, they deal with shattered lives.
In the meantime they find ways to lift their spirits amid strains of Cole Porter, Frederic Chopin, and later, Mozart.
We observe the complexities of the relationships between the adults in Bill's life, the crude realities of gangs among the rubble, and an obscene game involving a neighbor(Sarah Langton), recently left motherless by an air raid.
Soon enough, the reality of how parents lose control of their children in wartime settles in as well, when Dawn begins dating Canadian Corporal Bruce Carrey (Jean-Marc Barr). Reportedly, upon viewing this film, Boorman's sister collapsed and took to her bed for a few days, having seen many antics she thought she'd gotten away with as a teenager portrayed onscreen.
Another major crisis causes the Rowans to seek refuge in the riverside home of Bill's maternal grandparents(the comically exasperated Ian Bannen, and stalwart Annie Leon). Bill's three aunts, Faith, Hope and Charity(Jill Baker, Amelda Brown, and Kathrine Boorman) provide support during this time.
But even as air strikes destroy lives and property, in an ironic twist, they provide the Rowans with an answer to the problem of food shortages, and Bill, in particular, with one of the most joyous moments of his life.
Watch for a scene where Bill observes a film being made in the middle of the road; it is a portrait of a young lad glimpsing his future career.
While certain scenes may make a viewer squeamish, overall, "Hope and Glory" is a poem to hope and family solidarity in the hardest of times.

A fantastic story that gives a great look into the war from a young boys point of view and the effects a father away from home has on his family. Funny and sad, it's a great movie.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good........2007-06-27

I like a good zombie movie. The ending was an interesting twist, honestly didn't see it coming. It does take a little while to get there, and it's a little confusing with the whole alien and zombie thing. It's a little slow at times, but overall i like it. Good for first-timers, and i look forward to their next one.

1 out of 5 stars They should have called it "DEAD".......2007-05-06

This movie was terrible. Whoever called this film a classic must be very easily entertained. What's with the people hanging in mid-air? What's with the rain? What's with the aliens? Where did the zombies come from? Why were the zombies still there after the aliens left?

This is a classic 'the editor should have been fired' film.

4 out of 5 stars Post structuralism meets Dawn of the Dead . . ........2007-04-05

I usually enjoy 'over-the-top' movies that play with a straight face(Think "Bruce Campbell"), and this is one of the better ones. It is a fun movie from people that obviously like the genre--they're not making fun OF it--but are having fun WITH it.

Definitely NOT predictable. I'm watching it a second time to sort out some of the twists. In addition, this is a case where not knowing the actors helps, because you have no idea who is going to survive. Well, you have some idea, but not entirely, and that adds to the fun.

The movies has the gore and the usual sort of thing one expects in the genre, but it is not creepy. When I watched it I thought of "Shawn of the Dead," in the sense that it is written/directed in a very similar spirit.

I'm glad I bought it and will probably watch it again every few years.

4 out of 5 stars This is fun.......2007-04-01

The actor Mongo whatever, is a trip to watch!! The gore is funny as hell! The shovel scene makes me cringe every time I see it. Also the cops or constables are funny as well with their shorts!. Not one to take serious. This is very much like Dead Alive among others but not as goofy.

Undead (The Speirig Brothers, 2003)

The last thing I was expecting from the surprisingly-heavily-promoted (and unsurprisingly-narrowly-released-in-America) Undead, based on the big, murky promo posters, was comedy. But that's exactly what I got. Better yet, we got a zombie flick that has pretensions of being a fifties sci-fi B movie-- imagine crossing Night of the Living Dead with The Day the Earth Stood Still with the script being written by Broken Lizard and you've got a good idea of where the Speirig Brothers are coming from here.

Rene (the stunning Felicity Mason, recently of Hollywood) is a small-town beauty queen who'll do anything to get out. She is, in fact, on the verge of doing just that when things go horribly, horribly wrong-- a meteor shower bombards the town, killing hundreds of people, all of whom rise as zombies and start attacking the other townspeople (as zombies, of course, are wont to do), turning them into zombies as well. Rene flees into the home of Marion (Inspector Gadget 2's Mungo McKay), a reclusive fisherman with a taste for weaponry. Other survivors congregate in the house, and the stage is set for a protracted siege between man and zombie. Except those aren't the only two species coming to the party...

The surprising thing about Undead is that it doesn't play its comedy straight, the way Slither or Return of the Living Dead do; there's always something slimy and uncomfortable just beneath the surface making you feel dirty as you're laughing at this. You know you're not supposed to be laughing at the stuff you're laughing at. If the Spierig Brothers, who are also responsible for the twisted, twisted script here, were attempting to simulate the unintentionally-hysterical factor of fifties B movies, they have succeeded in such a way that Undead may end up being remembered as one of the great satires of all time; a lot of movies have poked fun at the genre (and at themselves) by parodying that brand of humor, but few, if any, picked up on the ugliness that often lies beneath it. Here it is in spades.

The more I think about it, the better this movie was. You want to see this. ****

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad...Checkout Ray Mears Instead.......2007-02-26

Well, this isn't a bad DVD. I believe it was originally published as "17 Ways to Build a Fire Without a Match." The fire starting techniques are great but everything else is right out of any exhaustive survival book. So, the main focus is on fire starting. If the price is under $10 it's a worth while buy in that aspect.

On the other hand, if you into survival stuff checkout the Ray Mears DVD's. Excellent material. Ray goes to all corners of the world and stays out in the elements to show you it can be done, even the arctic. You may have to get these DVD's on the Amazon.uk site and they may be in PAL format.

2 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2007-02-07

I write this having some prior camping/adventure expieriences over the years and I got this dvd thinking it would be a good refresher "course". Although it covered all of the basic concerns of survival, it was not very organized and all topics left out details that could be important. I would like to see (or even make) a series of dvd's that show a survival expierience in detail involving different environments. Survivorman is a good concept (and is entertaining) but he could take that a step further in details. I think this dvd could be a good boy scout resource, but it was not for me. I will probably try to resell it.

4 out of 5 stars Learn a lot.......2005-10-13

I love learning, so wanted to see what people really do when in a pinch. This gives several ways to get shelter, make a fire, signal for help (mirrors work further distances then lights or smoke), some basics on injuries, sample of what foods to eat & which to avoid & more. They show you what you need in a kit or what to use in nature including some indigenous methods. I wasn't bored & like another said, there's so much info, I will watch again to soak it in more & it's great that I wasn't bored.

3 out of 5 stars It's o.k........2004-12-05

You get about what you pay for. Some interesting tips. Nothing ground breaking here just some basics. Not much help if you're really in a pinch and didn't bring your pre-made kit with you.

3 out of 5 stars A great place to start.......2004-10-08

I enjoyed this DVD. It was simple but you need to watch it more than once to get everything down. The fire making processes were in my opinion the most informative. I only wish that they spent more time on food gathering practices. This is a great compliment to the wonderful book Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants : Eastern and central North America (Peterson Field Guides). It can be found here at Amazon as well. This DVD is helpful for the avid primitive camper or the paranoid traveler that fears crashing in a remote area. Learn and enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars I should have read the other reviews here first.............2006-03-11

Hello all you perverted freaks out there! Capt. Freaky is back! With a new vintage Japanese film review for you...So lets cut right to the chase!

DON'T WASTE A DIME ON THIS CRAPPY MOIVE! PERIOD!!!!!! I GIVE IT ZERO STARS...NOT ONE SCENE WAS "STAR" WORTHY!

I should have read the other reviews about this film here at Amazon...then I could have saved my money for something else out there that may actually be interesting. The girls in this crappy film are mostly flat chested and unactractive...by Japanese law...the film makers have to always blurr out any genital hair or actual genitals from every scene (what does that tell you?)...the sex is poorly acted...

But by far the worst part of this entire film was the "over dubbed", phony sexual moaning! It was so phony and annoying; as if about a 10 yr old girl was having her toe nails pulled right out of her feet!...I think the only horror of this movie was having to listen to all that fake moaning, dubbed over the real actresses... all while looking at these flat girls poorly simulating sex!

And as for "the monster"?...He is nothing more than a bad Japanese actor who looks like he just stepped out of a "mud bath" at a spa in Sonoma CA! And it was so obvious that he is wearing a huge "dildo" over his (probably very small) "privates" while he proceeds to have sex with two different flat girls...then he shoots out, what appears to be a quart of "baby oil" all over them, (to simulate his ejaculate)

Do any of these comic scenarios I have detailed here sound like a film that you "real freaky" fans of mine want to see?
I don't know what else to say here that hasn't already been said in the previous reviews...this film sucks big time. There are no redeeming (rape, realistic torture, good frontal nudity, hot eroticism) values for you freaks to see here. There are also no interesting actresses to watch getting screwed...etc. I kept feeling like I was the one being screwed while watching this!

The bottom line is...the French and Italian film makers of the 1970's have cornered the market on this genre of films. The American's don't even bother making this genre at all....our producers go straight for the XXX pornos! L.A. is full of video tape porno houses filming young beautiful talent getting pounded FOR REAL every week....and if I can't locate any other classic old erotica films that were made back in the '70's soon....I won't have any other choice but to resort to checking out porn! (its often made so tacky these days however!)

Its unfortunate that Synopsis Films released this comic loser....it was a huge waste of my time and money...but after reading this review...it should not be a waste of YOURS!

2 out of 5 stars AMUSING PIECE OF TRASH.......2005-11-13

This movie is pure Japanise exploitation-trash-schlock. Balancing on the edge of soft-porn it has about its 2/3 given away for sex scenes. And rather explicit ones. What's the most funny - in those scenes all possible images of genitalia are hazed with special misty spots. But in the booklet there's a history of censorship in Japan concerning nudity on screen from the very beginning of cinema in this country. So I'd advise you to read it first, then everything becomes much more clearer.
Well, apart from sex there are brutal killings, some mud-covered monster with distorted voice, stupid dialogs and some kind of a plot which apparently serves as an excuse for all this mess. I was watching "Entrails of a Virgin" with my eyes wide open because I didn't ever know such trash even exists. That's why I gave it the second star - at times this movie surprises and amuzes.
Here's a fluent retelling of one scene, so you could get an idea: one of the female characters gets extremely horny, so she finds a severed arm of another character been killed, and starts masturbating with this hand. A monster with his giant phallus appeares. Hereafter she performs a fellatio on him while still masturbating with the hand (the severed one). Then she copulates with the monster crying she can't bear this anymore - it's so good and exciting, she's gonna die. Though she doesn't die. When the intercourse is finished, the monster penetrates her vagina with his hand and tears her intestines out.
Well, that's one of the brightest scenes in the movie. If you like that kind of cinema - don't hesitate and buy it although I must warn you the other scenes are not that spectacular.

2 out of 5 stars Boring!.......2005-10-27

I'm a big fan of Japanese horror films--the cognoscenti are starting to refer to it as "J-horror"--so I just knew I had to check out "Entrails of the Virgin" and "Entrails of the Beautiful Woman" when the friendly folks over at Synapse Films released them to DVD. These two films, made all the way back in the 1980s by some chap named Kazuo Komizu, have a reputation most hardcore horror film producers would give their right arms to possess. I heard and read the most enthusiastic comments regarding these two movies, about the insane levels of gory mayhem coupled with sex of the variety not often seen outside an adult film theater. You certainly don't see those two themes put side by side in movies made in the United States, at least not anymore. No one over here would dare make a film like these atrocities. First of all, such a film would never pass the ratings board, let alone secure a spot in the theaters. Too, the watchdog groups would drop on the filmmakers' heads like a ton of bricks. Then there is NOW and the other feminist groups to contend with. Those bonecrushers would grind any filmmaker into powder over a movie that looked like Komizu's movies.

"Entrails of the Virgin," the first in the series, starts out by introducing us to a bunch of photographers and models out on a photo shoot somewhere in Japan. Nothing much happens as the film treats us to seemingly endless--and immensely boring--scenes of these slightly unattractive girls striking cheesecake poses. Then they all hop in a van and strike off down the road. A fog moves in, or the dry ice machine starts up, and the vehicle hits a creature in the road. Nobody finds anything, however, so they get back in and drive to a little shack out in the woods. By this time I'm looking at the DVD case to make sure I'm watching the right movie. Meanwhile, the movie grinds on. Lots of talky scenes between the girls and the photographers reveal several things. One, the guys are total sleaze balls who think nothing of luring girls out on a photo shoot in order to take advantage of them. Two, these girls are dumber than a bag of hammers. Three, wrestling with a girl isn't nearly as interesting as it sounds, or at least doesn't play onscreen as well as it sounds. At this point, I'm thinking about calling NOW to complain.

So we watch, eagerly awaiting the carnage that MUST certainly arrive soon, as these people drink themselves into a stupor and then engage in uninspiring carnal activities. Then finally, something starts to happen. Remember that creature I said they hit in the van out on the road? Well, it shows up to wreak some serious havoc on our little group. Now we're going to see some real gore! Yippee! Nope, not really. Oh, the beastie rips a few people apart, and commits some invasive violence in spots, but the effects are so cheesy that my enthusiasm rapidly dwindled. At one point, one of these people runs around a tennis court outside while someone (I assume the beastie) chucks dinner plates at them! What's up with that? Who knows? I sure as heck don't. What I do know is that the movie roars to a conclusion with a few things that will stick in your noggin. Like the girl using a human arm to...well, let's just say she's keeping herself busy. Then there's the beast itself, a mud coated creature with a very noticeable feature that he puts to good use with the ladies. Yeah, that. By the time the television screen faded to black, I headed for the shower.

I hope I'm not making "Entrails of the Virgin" sound better than it is. Komizu's film is an exercise in extreme boredom. Endless sex scenes with the requisite fogging of certain body parts, a form of censorship all too common in Japan because of certain culture inhibitions, severely curtails any thrill a viewer on these shores would get out of the movie's numerous acrobatics. Not that any normal person would look at this movie as an exercise in erotic cinema. I certainly didn't. As for the gore, it's not anything you couldn't see in an Italian zombie flick or a current Japanese horror flick. It is over the top and occasionally taboo breaking, but the effects are so poorly carried off as to ruin the whole exercise. The most egregious sin committed in the movie is the lack of a plot. Now I'm a forgiving sort who doesn't mind a little surrealism or esotericism thrown into a movie, but I need something to hang my hat on, something to give me a little bit of a place on which to stand so I can try to figure out what's going on. We don't get that here. Character development is nonexistent, things happen for no apparent reason, and the monster is largely an enigma.

Maybe I'm trying too hard. Anyway, Synapse sure put a lot of work into the disc. The picture quality looks great, oddly enough. Extras include an essay explaining the omnipresent optical fogging, a trailer for the movie, and an interview with none other than Kazuo Komizu himself. If you're hoping for explanatory information on the film from the director, think again. This guy is a first class oddball who spends more time talking about the shape of the earth and giggling over the weird electronic noises emanating from his computer than throwing the viewer a rope. I'm not going to recommend the film to anyone--if you're into horror, you know whether you want to see this one or not. Good luck if you attempt the journey.

1 out of 5 stars Movie Review.......2005-07-07

The Movie is a Japanese produced, Grade D, low budget piece of trash. Some nudity, and violence, but most of it was off camera. Don't waste your time.

2 out of 5 stars Horror fans beware..........2005-02-12

The plot, what little there is of it: Three Japanese pornographers go out into the mountains to shoot photos. Due to the fog, they stop their van and decide to spend the night in an abandoned building, where they get drunk and sexually assault the photo shoot girls. Little do they know, there is a "swamp monster" lurking with similar sexual designs and murderous intentions as well.

As a horror fan, I was disappointed. There are no scares, the direction is sloppy, and the gore is minimal with maybe two exceptions. In three cases when a violent attack occurs, the camera cuts away to a "metaphorical" shot representing the violence, for example, a hammer hitting a piece of meat. I found the whole exercise pretty tedious to sit through for a pretty half-assed payoff at the end. Specifically in the last gore scene, latex that's supposed to be human skin stretches and bends with bubble-gum elasticity. Very fake.

Then you have the swamp monster, well, not really a monster, he's actually some Japanese guy caked in mud. When they finally show a good shot of him, he's got his hair spiked up in a muddy mohawk! Pretty laughable, and to call it a real horror film would be stretching the truth somewhat. If you take out the sex, you could probably edit this 72 minute feature down to a 15 minute short. However, I would even imagine most sex film fans would be disappointed with the digitally blurred genitalia that tames it down to softcore level.

Nothing is ever explained, really. It's all a rather incoherent mishmash of sex-rape scenes with the horror aspects emerging in the last 20 minutes or so. But by that time it was too late to generate any real interest. The confusion is somewhat explained by watching the interview with director Komizu. His nonsensical ramblings while chainsmoking gave me the impression of a week-long crystal meth binge. At least he seems like he had fun filming the movie.

I would only recommend this movie to diehard fans of Japanese sex films, or perhaps the heavily drugged. I generously gave it two stars, only because of the beautiful Japanese girls, and the two brief gore parts that actually worked, one involving the use of a severed arm (!) If you're looking for disturbing Japanese horror, try Organ, Evil Dead Trap, or something from the Guinea Pig series before resorting to Entrails of a Virgin!

In December of 1969, four months after Woodstock, the Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane gave a free concert in Northern California, east of Oakland at Altamont Speedway. About 300,000 people came, and the organizers put Hell's Angels in charge of security around the stage. Armed with pool cues and knifes, Angels spent the concert beating up spectators, killing at least one. The film intercuts performances, violence, Grace Slick and Mick Jagger's attempts to cool things down, close-ups of young listeners (dancing, drugged, or suffering Angel shock), and a look at the Stones later as they watch concert footage and reflect on what happened. ++++ DVD FEATURES: This officially licensed release from South Korea is All-Region NTSC Code 0 (playable worldwide) with Full Screen display and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound in ENGLISH with optional (removeable) English or Korean subtitles. 5 out of 5 stars Stones shine amid the horror.......2005-12-01

Watching this after a screening of WOODSTOCK is a real study in contrast. ALTAMOUNT was always on my radar, growing up, and I had seen this in the theater back in the 70s, but revisiting it now ... what a revelation. There was a perception that WOODSTOCK had been an incredibly significant event in the counter-culture galaxy; a peace+love tribal congress. This concert came four months later, and because it was the west coast rebuttal to the upstate NY megafest, would be even better - better bands, better drugs, hipper hippies, freakier clothes, groovier vibes. The crowd shots are both revealing, and inevitably, terrifying as the claustraphobic crush tightens around the stage (crowd control plans, anyone?) and the HELLS ANGELS react like bears in cages being poked with sticks ... they erupt in an orgy of beatdowns and over-the-top violence. After all, that's what they do. Was anyone truly surprised? The various bands (Airplane, Santana, Dead, Stones) are merely ineffectual witnesses (with a good view) to what goes on, tho Marty Balin does get coldcocked during the Airplane set. I'm sure the musicians to this day feel fortunate that they did not get stomped on stage by the ever-growing legion of wild-eyed, wooly strangers standing nearby. (keep an eye out for the 300 lb. naked man careening through the crowd) If Woodstock gave us a pleasant marijuana buzz, Altamount grinds our collective molars with a bad blend of street meth and bootleg LSD. Man, am I glad I wasn't there.
All this being said, a good portion of this excellent documentary features the Stones backstage, in the recording studio, on the road, and performing with aplomb at a Madison Square Garden show. In '69, after all, they were in midseason form.
