Although it eventually runs out of smart ideas and resorts to a typically explosive finale, this above-average thriller rises above its formulaic limitations on the strength of powerful performances by Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. Both play Chicago police negotiators with hotshot reputations, but when Jackson's character finds himself falsely accused of embezzling funds from a police pension fund, he's so thoroughly framed that he must take extreme measures to prove his innocence. He takes hostages in police headquarters to buy time and plan his strategy, demanding that Spacey be brought in to mediate with him as an army of cops threatens to attack, and a media circus ensues. Both negotiators know how to get into the other man's thoughts, and this intellectual showdown allows both Spacey and Jackson to ignite the screen with a burst of volatile intensity. Director F. Gary Gray is disadvantaged by an otherwise predictable screenplay, but he has a knack for building suspense and is generous to a fine supporting cast, including Paul Giamatti as one of Jackson's high-strung hostages, and the late J.T. Walsh in what would sadly be his final big-screen role. The movie should have trusted its compelling characters a little more, probing their psyches more intensely to give the suspense a deeper dramatic foundation, but it's good enough to give two great actors a chance to strut their stuff. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent movie with realistic negotiation tactics.......2007-06-08

I had seen this movie many times over the past few years, but decided to buy it to incorporate into a presentation I recently did on Crisis/Hostage Negotiation. It was the first time that I watched the movie with the intent of evaluating the accuracy of the movie's portrayal of actual negotiations. I was surprised how accurate the negotiation processes were portrayed in the movie...it matched many of the conflict communication theories I studied.

On the entertainment side, getting Kevin Spacey and Samuel L. Jackson together in the movie surely didn't hurt. Good cast, decent story line, well put together and enjoyable to watch.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best action-thrillers.......2007-05-29

The Negotiator is an excellent action/thriller with 2 great performances from Kevin Spacey and Samuel Jackson. Despite being billed as an action film, this isn't your standard brainless Van Damme flick. The impression throughout the movie is tense. The best thing about the movie is the dialogue.

Both Spacey and Jackson are negotiators. Jackson is accused of murdering his partner and is determined to prove his innocence. He does a good job acting as an on the edge, almost out of control guy to the negotiators but also does a good job convincing his hostages and the audience that he is innocent. Spacey arrives almost half way thru the movie but is outstanding in his scenes. He immediately takes over the negotiations with Jackson's character from a helpless, nervous negotiator who Jackson made a complete fool of in a couple of especially good scenes.

This film made sense, and provided a good, logical ending. I wish more movies were half as good as this one. The plot twists are interesting, and not as shallow as the average film in the genre. The story is very original, and Gary Gray is in my opinion one of the most underrated directors today and deserves credit for putting this together. Fans of the genre should admire this movie, while many others can probably appreciate what it has to offer. Solid entertainment for 140 minutes.

to the end! That is the best word to discribe this movie! Great action and drama. Perfect casting with great acting. The truth will be brought out in the end!

1 out of 5 stars Too much drama.......2007-03-15

A friend told me alot about this movie and I happened to buy this movie from Wal-Mart and I watched it and it doesnt sound the same as what my friend told me about. This movie is about drama and crime and she knows I am not into drama and crime so I made her buy the DVD from me. I am not too interested in this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Underated Drama.......2006-06-29

Going through my DVD's I have never seen before I came across a film called the "negotiator," with Kevin Spacey and Samuel Jackson. Jackson plays a hostage negotiator that is framed for murder. The police plant evidence to make it appear that he is putting money in overseas accounts. When his partner is murdered in a park the police see Jackson with his gun at the scene. Fact is that he was set to meet his partner only to find him slumped over the steering wheel. Everything unravels for Jackson. He goes to confront the man whom he suspects set him up. One of his body guards pulls a gun on him. Jackson's character disarms him and ends up taking everyone hostage in the process.

Kevin Spacey stars as a negotiator who knows little about him. Having an objective view will help the case. It has lots of twists and turns that are too numerous to mention, however it is a good thriller/action movie. Yet it doesn't easily fall into that category. If Stallone were in this one, it would have been a standard action yarn. This one is a lot more intense and realistic. A lot of areas explored in this movie could actually happen in real life.

A cultish horror favorite, 1962's What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? will make you think twice before hungrily unveiling a covered plate of food. Bette Davis stars as Jane Hudson, a onetime child actress and singer. As an elderly woman, she wishes to revive her vaudevillian career, but she has become a grotesque caricature of her former self. Over the years as her star faded, the star of her older sister Blanche (Joan Crawford) rose, outshining the career of the has-been Baby Jane. Jane was relegated to minor roles, which she only won when Blanche demanded that she be awarded them. The film opens years after a calamitous car accident leaves Blanche in a wheelchair, with no one to care for her except the increasingly insane and sadistic Jane and their servant, Norman. Trying to punish Blanche for her years of success, Jane tortures the housebound woman, slowly trying to starve her to death, all the while attempting to recapture the fame of her youth. This dark drama also stars Victor Buono as the hefty pianist who answers Jane's ad for an accompanist, hoping to milk some money off the demented old woman. Both Buono and Davis were nominated for Oscars for their roles in this suspenseful and somewhat sick thriller that exploited well the real-life antagonism between Davis and Crawford, while at the same time rejuvenated both their careers. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?.......2007-07-02

Aldrich's campy cult classic still chills, thanks to a deliciously creepy premise which borrows from "Sunset Boulevard" in exposing the mental disintegration of a one-time star. Still, this is a more ghoulish affair, with Jane finding a variety of sinister ways to torture poor Blanche. Leads Davis and Crawford had parallel Hollywood careers, and their rivalry was famous, yet they'd never worked together before this (nor would they again!). Davis in particular is fearless as demented harridan Jane, and corpulent Victor Buono adds a revolting touch as Jane's smarmy accompanist.

4 out of 5 stars Baby Jane? Who the hell is Baby Jane?.......2007-06-08

"What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" was originally billed as a horror movie, but by today's standards is more of a thriller. No one could have asked for a better star pairing. Joan Crawford plays the sympathetic 'good sister' Blanche, a faded screen starlet wheelchair bound and left tormented at the hands of her psychotic sister, Jane. Jane was once a cutesy childhood performer, groomed and dresed up like a little doll. Like Shirely Temple, her performances probably made pedophiles grin. An embittered, nasty woman who never quite grew up past being a spoiled child, Jane is eager for any audience. Bette Davis really nails the part of Jane, as viewers are given no choice but to simply HATE her character. She really steals the show. Crawford is also very good too, as viewers feel pity for her, hoping she'll make it in the end. The ending is ambiguous. An excellent movie that provides an interesting character study of child starlets, fame, sibling rivalry, and the dire for attention.

5 out of 5 stars Here's A Timeless Classic Well Worth Seeing!.......2007-05-26

This movie made its original debut during my childhood. It stars 2 of the most famous American actresses of the 20th century---Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. The story is intriguing and, at times, chilling. I feel comfortable recommending it to all viewers who love the Hollywood classics...

5 out of 5 stars Good ol' movie.......2007-05-13

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? is a memory from my childhood. I remember being four maybe five years old when I first saw this movie. It wasn't until now that I decided to get my own copy on DVD. I would not consider it a scary movie, just a thriller with plenty of black humor. It almost reminds me of Alfred Hitchcook's mini episodes that sometimes run on TV. Anyone who likes good old classics should consider having this movie in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Jane.......2007-05-09

I first saw this movie as a child and it continues to amuse me and at the same time make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. I enjoyed passing this down to the next generation, this movie is a timeless masterpiece!

You know that old dramatic principle of suspension of disbelief? You'll have to rely on it for this box-office smash, but you won't be disappointed. Harrison Ford plays a U.S. president who single-handedly employs his rigid antiterrorism policy when a band of Russian thugs hatch a mid-flight takeover of Air Force One. Gary Oldman, who chews the scenery as the lead terrorist, will shoot a hostage at the slightest provocation. Glenn Close plays the sternly pragmatic vice president who negotiates with Oldman from her Washington seat of power. If you can believe that the aircraft's pressurized cabin can sustain hundreds of rounds of machine-gun fire, you'll buy anything in this entertaining potboiler, especially thanks to Ford's stalwart heroics and some nifty special effects. Director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) keeps the action moving so fast you won't be sweating the details. Don't forget your parachute! --Jeff Shannon

Harrison Ford should have been a President... He is great in this movie and could save the world....

4 out of 5 stars Great Action flick wrapped in honor.......2007-05-31

There are some unrealistic elements to this movie, but only when you stop and think about it. It's an action movie and there will always be some stretches of reality. Harrison Ford delivers as does his supporting cast. It will pull you into the story without any real trouble, you will find yourself routing for the President and telling the evil guys "take that". In the end, you will feel good about it and you may even be inspired by it. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and TIMELY! (RELEVANT).......2007-05-04

People don't often celebrate this movie for its timeliness and relevance but as world events unfold, it is steadily becoming more and more relevant in my humble opinion. This particular version doesn't necessarily add anything to the enjoyment of the movie. But to be honest it's hard to add to sheer perfection. This movie is well-plotted and very believable, even in the moments when you find yourself going "NO WAY!"

Some have written it off as saying it depicts the "cowboy mentality" as if that's a bad thing. Some say that it's a training manual for terrorists that might wish to harm our own leadership.

Personally I think it's merely a good action movie with a good moral to the story. Good will only triumph over Evil when Good learns to take its head out of its scared hind end and actually be willing to stand up for what's right.

Until we are willing to have a back bone, the list of countries that are going to run right over is is ever growing. This movie cautions us not to let that happen. It's up to us to either listen or ignore this stark warning.

4 out of 5 stars My Husband loves this movie!.......2007-04-10

This is a good movie and will keep you watching all the way through. Harrison Ford is excellent in this and the supporting cast is good as well. The plot is revelent with all the current world situations. The ending makes you want to cheer!

3 out of 5 stars Once upon a time...........2007-03-27

... USA was the only country in the world where this kind of story (although farfetched) could be happening. Especially when you remember the JFK's fighting history (maybe it's one of the reasons why he was assassinated). But now, when you see the Bush family history, the only war record of the grandfather (at the same time JFK was patrolling in the Pacific) shows his best achievement was building the family's fortune by catering for the Third Reich's financial needs. And I can imagine the present Bush pounding Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the head with a bible (to show him it's better than the coran), and telling him "Get out of my world". As well, USA lost all credibility when he got RE-elected : One mistake might be understandable, but, as the Romans said "Errare humanum est, sed perseverare diabolicum" (to err is human, but to persist is diabolical).

This seminal 1988 thriller made Bruce Willis a star and established a new template for action stories: "Terrorists take over a (blank), and a lone hero, unknown to the villains, is trapped with them." In Die Hard, those bad guys, led by the velvet-voiced Alan Rickman, assume control of a Los Angeles high-rise with Willis's visiting New York cop inside. The attraction of the film has as much to do with the sight of a barefoot mortal running around the guts of a modern office tower as it has to do with the plentiful fight sequences and the bond the hero establishes with an LA beat cop. Bonnie Bedelia plays Willis's wife, Hart Bochner is good as a brash hostage who tries negotiating his way to freedom, Alexander Godunov makes for a believable killer with lethal feet, and William Atherton is slimy as a busybody reporter. Exceptionally well directed by John McTiernan. --Tom Keogh

Description

Bruce Willi stars as New York City Detective John McClane, newly arrived in Los Angeles to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia). But as Mclane waits for his wife's office party to break up, terrorist take control of the building. While the terrorist leader, Hans gruber (Alexander Godunov) round up hostages, McClane slips away unnoticed. Armed with only a service revolver and his cunning, McClane launches his own one-man war. A crackling thriller from beginning to end, Die Hard explodes with heart-stopping suspense.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A near-perfect action classic.......2007-04-23

John MaClane (Bruce Willis) a cop from New York is meeting his estranged wife at her office christmas party in a high rise in LA. At the same time a group of terrorists/robbers is plotting to steal the bank bonds that are sitting in the company safe - and so McClane is plunged into a cat and mouse game, which will test all his resourcefulness...

Even after all these years this is still a great action film. It is brilliantly directed by John McTiernan who utilises all the nooks and crannies of the building to create a real sense of cat and mouse. There is also plenty of warmth and humour in the story to help relieve the unrelenting tension.

Like all good films Die Hard contains characters that we really care about. Like all good action films this is combined with spectacular action. The only thing that counts against it is that it goes on a bit long. Otherwise it is a near-perfect action film.

5 out of 5 stars A classic that is much better than so many of its imitators.......2007-03-01

This movie has become part of the popular culture in a way that few movies have. One sees references to it in other movies, TV shows, and even some books. When it first came out it was considered hyper violent and extreme to the point of self-parody. And it is. However, so many other films have copied some of its elements that one can see past all the explosions and gun fights to see some of the other aspects of "Die Hard" that make the movie work in a way that many of the "big boom" movies do not.

One aspect is simply that Bruce Willis plays John McClane with a very nice mix of vulnerability and confusion to go along with his near super hero fighting ability. His trademark wise cracks also add some humor to a movie that could have been relentlessly violent. Reginald VelJohnson as Sgt Powell is also a great human touch to the movie. He grounds McClane and gives him a friend and supporter when the bad guys AND, the local cops, and the feds are against him. He also provides a balance for all the cops who assume that McClaine is one of the bad guys if not THE bad guy. That attitude is shown most directly by Deputy Police Chief Dwayne T. Robinson (played perfectly by Paul Gleason who died too young in 2006 at 67).

Bonnie Bedelia plays Holly Gennero McClane in a very interesting way. In the beginning of the movie, she confuses us. Are we supposed to admire her independence in moving across the country with her kids and abandoning John or are we supposed to dislike her? That she uses her maiden name, in 1988 probably moved her a couple of feet into the unsympathetic category. And this is important, because our movement to admiring and then liking her is more powerful if we start not liking her much.

Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber gives one of the classic performances in film. Everybody who has seen this movie remembers this role vividly. And it put Rickman on the map as a movie star. It really is a great performance and a great villain. Alexander Gudunov was much better known than Rickman, and his scene chewing performance got him a lot of notice (and in a way type cast him), but it is Rickman's cool headed monster that we remember most vividly.

Clarence Gilyard, Jr. as the computer genius is also a role we remember vividly. Not so much for the technical wizardry the role requires of him, but his cold cheering for the destruction of the police trying to enter the building as if he were calling a football game.

William Atherton should get a special award in Hollywood for being willing to play these characters we all hate. He does it so well that it has to be hard on him when he goes in public because people probably treat him roughly, assuming he is one of the jerks from his movies. Here he plays the TV reporter slime Richard Thornburg. He isn't exactly "bad", but rather so solipsistic that he cannot see how they way he does his job is inhuman in the way it uses other people.

The movie has so many other wonderful characters who add their own touch to the movie that I cannot list them all. I think of the two FBI guys named Johnson, and Argyle down in the Limo waiting for McClane and then getting involved more in the story than he ever expected. Or Hart Bochner as the coked out sleaze Harry Ellis. Or James Shigeta as Takagi with just the right dignity and humanity. There are so many more nice small performances that make the film as good as it is.

A classic film telling a story that anyone who has seen the movie will remember.

5 out of 5 stars "Yo-ho-ho" - first part if unique.......2007-01-29

Die Hard can be summed up in one word 'AWESOME'.

A plot so simple that a two year old could of thought it up, yet with it's amazing dialog and great action this picture will go down as one of the all time great hollywood action films.

This was the film that launched Bruce Willises career and when you see it you know why. With his heroics and the way he delivers a line Bruce will never die hard out of Hollywoods memory.

A New York cop (Bruce Willis) goes to his wifes Christmas party to find that he is in the middle of a terrorist act, so bring on John McClane to walk across broken glass, blow up elevator shafts and to save the day.

This film runs at such an expeditious rate that you barley have time to draw breath, the film that all action films are now measured against, Die Hard is racey, whitty and damm right brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Very re-watchable.......2007-01-12

If you are looking for an inexpensive DVD to add to your collection, Die Hard is a great choice. It's very re-watchable - I just watched it 3 times in the past few weeks, and it's fun to watch during the winter due to its holiday backdrop. Bruce Willis was at his action character best in this first edition of the Die Hard trilogy.

Movie critic Roger Ebert summed it up very succinctly: "Of all of the Star Trek movies, this is the worst." Subsequent films in the popular series have done nothing to disprove this opinion; we can be grateful that they've all been significantly better since this film was released in 1989. After Leonard Nimoy scored hits with Star Trek III and IV, William Shatner used his contractual clout (and bruised ego) to assume directorial duties on this mission, in which a rebellious Vulcan (Laurence Luckinbill) kidnaps Federation officials in his overzealous quest for the supreme source of creation. That's right, you heard it correctly: Star Trek V is about a crazy Vulcan's search for God. By the time Kirk, Spock, and their Federation cohorts are taken to the Great Barrier of the galaxy, this journey to "the final future" has gone from an embarrassing prologue to an absurd conclusion, with a lot of creaky plotting in between. Of course, die-hard Trekkies will still allow this movie into their video collections; but they'll only watch it when nobody else is looking. After this humbling experience, Shatner wisely relinquished the director's chair to Star Trek II's Nicholas Meyer. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Star Trek 5.......2007-06-19

I have come to appreciate this movie after having watched it several times and being a fan of the original series since 1971. I believe this movie was more in tune with some of the more light hearted episodes of the original series(i.e. Trouble with Tribbles). There was a certain amount of episodic content to this movie that reminded me of the original 79 episodes(unlike a lot of modern Star Trek fiction which is far from the original concepts). The movie was a little top heavy with typical Shatner-esque self-indulgence(he directed of course). However, I was really impressed with the return to the triumvirate of the original series with McCoy's comical involvement with Spock which I feel was missing from a lot of the movies. As a pure intellectual adventure this was a rather fun movie albeit it suffered from poor financial support from Paramount. I think Shatner tried to preserve a little of the flavor of the original series although it was a bit jaded with his now infamous megalomania. From what I understand the plot of this movie had been floating around for years between Roddenberry and Shatner and their somewhat audacious and presumptuous views of the universe and religion. I would recommend this movie over Star Trek 1, 3, and even 4(this one was way to contrived and any sci-fi movie that brings you to the present or has aliens impersonate normal people is just an obvious attempt at saving money). In conclusion, I did enjoy this movie and I felt it is a good entry in the series and I feel it was more like the original series than a lot of the other movies.

3 out of 5 stars Not the worst one, quite entertaining!!.......2007-06-17

Like many, I feel this one should have been better, having read William Shatner's "Star Trek Memories" it is clear that he was passionate about this one, but was screwed by Paramount & their lack of concern for his passion, having read other reviews here, I can say this, I don't believe you can pin this one's failure on Shatner, & here's why>> for starters he wanted Sean Connery for the role of Sybok, but Connery was already obligated to do "Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade", also, ILM was not available for this reason too, secondly, there was a talent guild strike(can't remember which) that kept some of the best producers & cinematographers, & special effects people from doing this one, probably the reason Paramount made budget cuts, & thirdly Hollywood was hyping up the first "Batman" film, & "Indiana Jones", so "Trek" sort of got shafted, unlike "Trek III" which went head to head with "Indiana Jones" in 1984, Paramount in 1989 decided not to do the same, "Back to the Future II" was slated for summer'89 as well, but was pushed back to Christmas time for this very reason, & one can't help but wonder if "Trek V" would have done better if pushed back also, overall, I like this one, it is way better than 1998's "Inserruction" & 2002's "Nemesis", In this one we see more character substance come out of Kirk & Spock when they are forced to confront their emotional pain courtesy of Sybok, a renegade vulcan & half brother to Spock, the character of Sybok is interesting & not as boring as some might say, he is quite developed, what is disappointing about this one I think is toward the end when they reach the great barrier, in Shatner's book he stated that he wanted to create a beautiful heaven-like place, but his vision was never realized, the being they encounter would have been more menacing & threatning, like many I feel Shatner got a bum rap for this one, & with today's technology, they could polish it the way they did the first film for Robert Wise, they could & should do the same for Shatner on this one, maybe they will, it is long overdue!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-05-21

Was a film ever more misunderstood. A great Star Trek film this is. Great events will rock you.

2 out of 5 stars going where no man has gone before....literally!.......2007-05-05

The premise for the Final Frontier, where the ultimate advanture is of the supernatural, where we as human seeks the purpose of life, wow what a storyline huh? I give Mr.Shatner credit for taking a risk of combining the almighty with sci fi as they are truly going where no man has gone before. I like the friendly humor among the big 3...Bones, Spock, and our favorite capitan, Kirk but the whole plot of just too wacky to be believable for the sane that i do not know where to begin so why bother. I do suppose those of faith would be curious in how it would end but the rest of the masses just don't give a hoot. And Kirks directions might be acceptable for his tv show but not so for a motion picture of this magnitude but then again, even with the capable Spock directing it, might not be enough to save this movie from being the worst of the best.

Do i recommend the Final Frontier? Unless ur a big trekkie fan who would watch anything involving the world of trek, just skip it and check out the Undiscovered Country, a great closure to the original series (TOS).

A gripping true crime yarn, a juicy slice of overheated New York atmosphere, and a splendid showcase for its young actors, Dog Day Afternoon is a minor classic of the 1970s. The opening montage of New York street life (set to Elton John's lazy "Amoreena") establishes the oppressive mood of a scorching afternoon in the city with such immediacy that you can almost smell the garbage baking in the sun and the water from the hydrants evaporating from the sizzling pavement. Al Pacino plays Sonny, who, along with his rather slow-witted accomplice Sal (John Cazale, familiar as Pacino's Godfather brother Fredo), holds hostages after a botched a bank robbery. Sonny finds himself transformed into a rebel celebrity when his standoff with police (including lead negotiator Charles Durning) is covered live on local television. The movie doesn't appear to be about anything in particular, but it really conveys the feel of wild and unpredictable events unfolding before your eyes, and the whole picture is so convincing and involving that you're glued to the screen. An Oscar winner for original screenplay, Dog Day Afternoon was also nominated for best picture, actor, supporting actor (Chris Sarandon, as a surprise figure from Sonny's past), editing, and director (Sidney Lumet of Serpico, Prince of the City, The Verdict, and Running on Empty). --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Dog Day Afternoon.......2007-07-03

Reuniting Sidney Lumet and Al Pacino, who'd worked previously on "Serpico," this Oscar-nominated drama (based on a true story) tracks two scheming misfits who've witlessly imprisoned themselves in a no-win situation. Pacino's ruffled, passionate evocation of working-class Brooklynite Sonny--who riles the gawking crowd outside the bank with chants of "Attica!"--stands alongside his best work of the 1970s. The late Cazale, who played weak brother Fredo in "The Godfather," is heartbreaking as Pacino's imbecilic partner-in-crime. Gritty, suspenseful, and superbly crafted.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent movie. Transfer not bad........2007-06-27

This movie is an excellent one. It was the first time I've seen this movie, and it was a revelation. Al Pacino's acting is outstanding, and the story is very well written.

The transfer itself is very good, but is limited by the source material of course. However, it's still worth it to go with the HD DVD over the DVD. In fact, it turns out the HD DVD is actually cheaper than the 2-disc special edition DVD on Amazon, so getting the HD DVD version of this fine film is a no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars holds up (sorry. couldn't help it).......2007-05-09

even after all these years. amazing filmmaking. Excellent writing, excellent acting, excellent direction, editing, sound...
we lost a fine actor when John Cazale passed on at such a young age years ago.

just saw a friend's copy (sans extras)... have so much respect for this film and the way all concerned are treated with such respect and dignity am going to order the
two disk special edition.

this is probably as good as any motion picture ever made.

5 out of 5 stars You can never have too much classic Pacino!.......2007-03-02

This Sidney Lumet classic is the third in the trio of classic Al Pacino movies I love dearly and never get tired of watching. The other two are "Serpico", (which was also directed by Lumet), and "Scarface".

One hot sunny August afternoon in 1972, three bumbling and inept robbers attempt to take the First Brooklyn Savings Bank. Things start to go wrong within the first ten minutes of them entering the bank and in no time at all, the cops are out front, the media is out front and a noisy crowd gathers out front for good measure. A robbery that should have taken no longer than 10 minutes turns into an all-night sideshow and the hottest thing on live TV.

Pacino plays Sonny Wortzik, the leader of the two-man gang (there was a third man but he couldn't handle the pressure and scampered off less than five minutes into the raid) that needs the money for, among other things that are never made clear, Sonny's boyfriend (played by Chris Sarandon) who needs a sex change operation. Sonny and Sal (played by John Cazale) seem totally lost as their whole plan just seems to disintegrate around them. The action switches between the growing claustrophobia within the bank, where Sonny and Sal are holding bank employees hostage and the mayhem outside led by the corpulent and co-operative chief police negotiator, played by Charles Durning.

At times the movie is tense action thriller, at times comedy and at times pure farce. "Attica! Attica!" Sonny screams outside the bank at one point, alluding to an incident earlier that year at the infamous maximum-security prison where some prisoners had apparently been killed. The crowd goes wild, roaring their support for someone who has somehow become something of a local celebrity. At another point, Sonny asks to see his wife and kids. It's the boyfriend who's eventually brought by police escort. At another point we see gay activists waving banners of support. Brave people, considering this was New York City in 1972, just 3 years after Stonewall.

The movie earned six Oscar nominations in 1975 including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and one apiece for Al Pacino (his fourth) and Chris Sarandon. The movie is based on a magazine article by P. F. Kluge & Thomas Moore.

That day, August 22nd, 1972 will go down in history as one the 250 cops, the F.B.I., the 8 hostages and the 2,000 Brooklyn onlookers will never forget. You won't forget it either, once you've seen this unmissable Pacino classic.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Films Ever Made.......2007-02-17

"Dog Day Afternoon" is a great film that wowed me the first time I saw it and continues to be a great film that I enjoy even after my 4th time watching it. We all know what a fine actor Al Pacino is; he usually gets the most raves for his performances in "The Godfather" and "Scarface"
but I think that this film features the best Pacino performance. Nothing against Tony Montana, but Pacino's Sonny is such a great character that could've been played so many ways and Pacino does it just right. Sonny is naive, nervous, flamboyant, tough, and, occasionally, smart. The movie also happens to feature one of the most famous one-word lines of dialogue in cinema..."Attica!" The movie is directed by Sidney Lumet, a fine director whose credits include 'Serpico,' 'Network,' '12 Angry Men,' and more recently 'Find Me Guilty.' DDA is, in my opinion, his masterpiece. An energetic thrill-ride that truly deserves to be ranked as one of the finest movies ever made. Sonny, his friend Sal (John Cazale, who was killed Pacino in "The Godfather Pt.II"), and another accomplice barge into a small New York bank and try to rob it. It's established quickly how naive and unprepared the men are, especially after the third accomplice leaves right after the guns are revealed. Pretty soon, there's a phone call at the bank for Sonny and he realizes there are already police across the street. Within minutes, the scene becomes a media circus. Hundreds of cops, the FBI, the media, and onlookers have crowded around the bank leaving Sonny and Sal to hold the female bank tellers and the manager hostage. As Sonny desperately tries to get out of the jam and the cops slowly move in on him we, as the audience, realize...We're going to be in this bank for 124 minutes of film. I'm not fond of movies like this, movies that are set up almost as a stage play because it has only one setting. Oddly enough though, "Dog Day Afternoon" is incredibly entertaining throughout. Now, I'm willing to bet, most of the detailed reviews on this site reveal why Sonny is actually robbing the bank. I, myself, knew this little tidbit before watching it the first time. Watching the film with a friend recently (a friend who had never heard of the film), when the not-so-big revelation came he was shocked and surprised. He basically has the same reaction the cops, the media, and the onlookers have. Having said that, I highly recommend that you try not to know Sonny's reason for robbing the bank before you watch this. If Al Pacino had not already made his name with other films, "Dog Day Afternoon" would have made him a star. He proves here (especially when you look at his other performances) what a complete and total actor this man is. Never for a second is Sonny not completely believable in every aspect of the word. It's not a one-man show and there is a lot of great supporting work here, especially by Cazale and a brief appearance by Chris Sarandon. I also think that I wouldn't be saying anything new or saying anything false when I say this very well could be the best, most unique, bank robbery movie ever made. Even the hostages aren't cardboard cliches. Have there ever been cooler bank robbery hostages in a movie? Do yourself a favor, as a lover of cinema, and see "Dog Day Afternoon." You will not be disappointed.

Everything clicked in this 1994 action hit, from the premise (a city bus has to keep moving at 50 mph or blow up) to the two leads (the usually inscrutable Keanu Reeves and the cute-as-a-button Sandra Bullock) to the villain (Dennis Hopper in psycho mode) to the director (Jan De Bont, who made this film hit the ground running with an edge-of-your-seat opening sequence on a broken elevator). This is the sort of movie that becomes a prototype for a thousand lesser films (including De Bont's lousy sequel, Speed 2: Cruise Control), but Speed really is a one-of-a-kind experience almost anyone can enjoy. --Tom Keogh

Description

Hold on tight for a rush of pulse-pounding thrills, breathtaking stunts and unexpected romance in a film you'll want to see again and again. Keanu Reeves stars as Jack Traven, an L.A.P.D. SWAT team specialist who is sent to diffuse a bomb that a revenge-driven extortionist (Dennis Hopper) has planted on a bus. But until he does, Jack and passenger Sandra Bullock must keep the bus speeding through the streets of Los Angeles at more than 50 miles per hour - or the bomb will explode. A high-octane chase of suspense, non-stop action and surprise twists, Speed is a joyride sure to keep everyone on the edge of their seats.

5 out of 5 stars Very Exciting........2007-05-12

This movie keeps you on your toes, very exciting and entertaining, not a dull moment, just great.

5 out of 5 stars action movie.......2007-05-12

One of my favorite mindless action movies. Just turn off, sit back and enjoy. Dennis Hopper was terrific.

4 out of 5 stars Reeves, Bullock, Hopper press some pedal.......2007-03-24

This 1994 matchup of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock would not be the last pairing of this couple. This fortunate outcome for movie viewers makes it even more fascinating to watch the chemistry between the two back in 1994 when they did not trip off the tongue easily as a twinned male-female leads.

The flashes of humor that pass between them in this flick are brilliant, all the more so because the bomb-rigged bus they're maneuvering through LA, knowing that if bus and passengers will blow up if their speed goes below 50 mph, provides a death trap as a background.

The two wryly observe that relationships that begin under high-stress circumstances don't last. This reviewer is glad to file Bullock and Reeves in SPEED as an exception.

Dennis Hopper pulls a great turn as a heartless but very smart psycho terrorist. He's only in it for the money, so the show can move on without having to get the audience up to speed on any complicated grievances flowing from the past into Hopper's absurdly expressive brain.

Back to Reeves and Bullock, it's almost preternatural how cool the former can appear and how girl-next-door the latter. A lot of cinematic water has flowed under the bridge since the first SPEED back in the 90's. Reeves' and Bullocks repertoires have considerably expanded.

All the better than that such fun can come out of an evening's watching how they established a relationship (in role and as actors) under this most stressful of circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars Speed.......2007-01-31

The storyline is simple and great. There is never a dull moment is this movie. The director did a great job in casting Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock as screen couple. This movie still manage to glue me down to my seat even after ten years of production. It is a "must-have" for any good moives collector.

Die Hard is the movie franchise that made a movie star out of TV star Bruce Willis, and created an entire action-movie genre of its own. In the original 1988 film, Willis plays wisecracking New York cop John McClane, who arrives at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles to meet up with his estranged wife, Holly (Bonny Bedelia), at her office Christmas party. As luck would have it, the company ends up in the middle of a terrorist plot led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his gang of expert killers, and with little help coming from outside, McClane has to pick off his enemies one by one. Thus was born the "Die Hard genre", epitomized by such films as Under Siege (" Die Hard on a ship"), Passenger 57 ("Die Hard on a plane" ), Speed ("Die Hard on a bus"), and Cliffhanger ("Die Hard on a mountain"). But few measure up to the explosive brilliance of Die Hard. Director John McTiernan develops the action at a fast and furious pace, culminating in some fantastic set-pieces on the top of the building, in the elevator shaft, and in the building's outer plaza. Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza's script, based on Roderick Thorp's novel Nothing Lasts Forever, is smart, funny, and full of memorable lines (among them "Welcome to the party, pal!" and of course "Yippee ki-ay, motherf*****"), and the cast is perfection, especially Rickman as the cunningly evil villain, and Willis, whose McClane character--bloodied, beaten, bruised, and barely breathing, as he battles both bad guys and bureaucrats--is someone audiences could genuinely cheer for. --David Horiuchi

Description

Bruce Willi stars as New York City Detective John McClane, newly arrived in Los Angeles to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia). A crackling thriller from beginning to end, Die Hard explodes with heart-stopping suspense.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Currently Available Die Hard DVD Worth Buying.......2007-06-16

Because of the fact that the new Die Hard movie is coming out, 20th Century Fox has discontinued the GREAT Special Edition DVD's of the first three Die Hard DVD'S, and are replacing them with newly-packaged one-disc versions with only half of those original DVD's features. This DVD, the Special Edition Steelbook, is the only DVD that Fox has just released worth buying, because it is a repackaged edition of the original Two-Disc Special Edition of Die Hard. Hopefully Fox will do the same thing with the other Die Hard movies.

Bottom Line: Forget the new Die Hard boxset, get this instead and wait for the other ones.

The second sequel to the mold-making action film Die Hard brings Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) to New York City to face a better villain than in Die Hard 2. Played by Jeremy Irons, he's the brother of the Germanic terrorist-thief Alan Rickman played in the original film. But this bad guy has his sights set higher: on the Federal Reserve's cache of gold. As a distraction, he sets McClane running fool's errands all over New York--and eventually, McClane attracts an unintentional partner, a Harlem dry cleaner (Samuel L. Jackson) with a chip on his shoulder. Some great action sequences, though they can't obscure the rather large plot holes in the film's final 45 minutes. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best of the series.......2007-05-17

One of my guilty pleasures is watching action films that have good honest putrid to the core villains who are so smart that I can actually start pulling from them. Such films are rare. The reason for this is simple. So much time is spent working in tough guy cliches' and wild stunts that the creators of such films don't pay much attention to character development. In "Die hard with a Vengeance" The writers give us stunts galore. They give us the standard macho commentary to the hilt. But they also came up with bad guy who is clever you just got to like him.

This last installment of the trilogy that launched Bruce Willis' career is undoubtedly as entertaining as the first. Reprising his role as director, John McTiernan guides Willis and Samuel L. Jackson through New York City in a deadly game in which all odds are stacked against them. Recurrent in the movie is the theme that in life things may not always be what they seem, as racial relations are explored through the unlikely friendship of Willis and Jackson and the mystery of `Simon' is revealed-and of course the means by which he seeks his vengeance. Truly a great movie and I recommend all parts.

4 out of 5 stars Die Hard with a Vengence (Special Edition).......2007-05-08

I have always enjoy Die Hard movies, and like the first 2 episodes, it's always pack with endless actions.

4 out of 5 stars A mad bomber is in New York and wants McClane, why?.......2007-03-04

After the huge and growing success of the first two "Die Hard" movies, the world clamored for a third. But how do you keep it fresh? This story is not on Christmas, moves us to McClane's home turf in New York, splits him off from Holly (she is still in California and they haven't spoken for a year), and instead of the pleasant African-American cop Sgt Powell, we get Samuel L. Jackson as a proud and a tad angry African-American named Zeus Carver (which leads to an early misunderstanding, "Hey, Zeus" sounding like the Spanish pronunciation of Jesus, right?).

During the opening shot establishing that we are in New York, the title sequence ends in a rather stunning way and we are off to the races. However, in this movie McClane doesn't impose himself into the situation, he is dragged in by the villain, who calls himself Simon and who seems to have a some kind of personal grudge against him.

The way Zeus is pulled into this mess is also quite interesting and I have to say that Samuel L. Jackson adds as much to the movie and keeping it fresh as I am sure the writers and the producers hoped. He is terrific and makes a great foil and partner for Willis' McClane.

We expect explosions and impossible stunts in the "Die Hard" movies and get them aplenty here. They found ways to stick them in (and don't) where we don't often expect them. Jeremy Irons is fine as Simon. His army seems to be composed of people who believe in the story he tells about why he is doing this, but some seem to be there as mercenaries without any belief. It is quite a fascinating weave of textures in character.

Pay attention to even the little details in the beginning because they come back. Nothing is in there for idle chat even if it seems like idle chat.

The production budge of this movie was even bigger than the first two, but the U.S. gross was down a bit from Die Hard 2, however, the gross overseas was about has big as the total gross fro the second film. It was huge.

I will say that there is an awful lot of swearing and f-words in this movie that I found grinding after awhile. Really, writers, you can use other words. We do not need a curse every other word to know that these guys are under stress. Graham Greene's does a great job and his character is under just as much stress and you found a way that he didn't swear (I don't believe). Thanks for that at least.

There are some extras on the making of the film, the director's voice over commentary if you like watching the film that way, and stuff on how the special effects were done.

If you like this kind of thing, it is pretty good and part of a now classic series.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest.......2007-01-08

The Greatest Die Hard Movie. This one never stops with the suspense.

4 out of 5 stars An Under-rated Die Hard film.......2006-12-17

Most fans don't seem to like this one and although I don't think it's as good as the first 2, I think it's still a fun film. A man named Simon (well played by Jeromy Irons) says he wants to play a game with John Mclaine or he'll continue to cause mayhem in the city. So the police have choice but to call a hungover John Mclaine to do whatever Simon says. Samual L. Jackson plays a shopkeeper who Simon makes team up with Willis after he prevents Willis from getting killed. Well since Simon makes him wear a sign in the middle of the city that says I hate black people, well not in those words but worse actually. They than have to solve Simon's riddles and get hints to where he planted bombs all over the city. The film has an inventive plot that at least is different than the first 2. It also sounds a lot better than the upcoming plot of part 4. I mean in that one John Mclaine is to team up with a hacker (Justin Long) against....internet terrorists. I'm not kidding, that is the plot lol.

Part 1 and 2 have more heart and emotion than this one and his wife Holly is nowhere to be seen. But still it's a good pop corn flick and I can't really say that it's not a smart film. Samual L. Jackson makes a good partner for Willis too even if the script has either complain or argue with Willis too much. I mean there's one scene where they are trying to find a bomb while Jackson accuses Willis of wanting to call him a prejudice name. Probably the best thing about the movie is that it links it with part 3. Where Mclaine learns that Simon is the brother of Alan Rickman's villian from the first film.
