I bought this as a gift for y best friend. She and the kids watch at least one show of Xena every night. They all don't mind watching it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-02-05

I have only recently discovered Xena from the DVD release and I have to say that it does not disappoint. I am amazed at the quality of the writing, directing, and acting. Each of the episodes really draws you in and my favorite of them all are the Valkyrie episodes

4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended by this Xena fan!.......2007-01-05

The box set is full of extras. For anyone that has wanted to go to a convention but never been able the box is worth the purchase just for the behind the scenes of a Xena convention. All dvds are of great quality and the pictures are beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Considering Buying This, But ..........2006-12-13

To read about people's dissatisfaction with the color, plus the blooper reel being a repeat from the season one DVD instead of one derived from the season six episodes, makes me wonder if I should avoid buying it unless they fix the problems. My main incentive for buying it: I'm surprised none of the reviewers have mentioned my favorite episode from the season, and perhaps the series, "Path of Vengeance", primarily for the incredible kickboxing battle between Gabrielle and Varia, which is Gabrielle's best choreographed and most exciting fight in the entire series (even though she gets knocked out). I had hoped that Renee O'Connor would have provided an audio commentary for that episode.

5 out of 5 stars Xenas best yet.......2006-11-10

In my opinion season 6 of xena was the finest some of the greatest episodes were in it the acting was great there were no more bad comedy episodes[thank god!] all in all a fantastic season of a great show

5 out of 5 stars Another great season!.......2006-08-14

This may contain spoilers, so be warned.
I enjoyed this season very much because it had a bit more of an ongoing story arc. More like two or three. I enjoyed the rift arc, but didn't particularly enjoy The Bitter Suite as a closure episode. I'm all for musicals, don't get me wrong, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. The Hope story line was very well written, and I was hooked from the Deliverer all the way to Sacrifice. When in Rome was another great episode because we got another look at the character of Caesar. It would have been nice to see a Xena episode in which fans actually get to see the civil war between Caesar and Pompi begin though. I really enjoyed the whole Roman arc from second to fourth season. And as always, Kevin Smith delivered wonderful performances as Ares. If you haven't seen it yet, and if you have the cash, this season is defenatly worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars The best season!.......2006-07-28

The best season of Xena. The start of the Dahawk arc, mixed with other great episodes like "When in Rome...", "The Dirty Half Dozen", and even "Fins, Femmes, & Gems" and other goodness make this season a must get if you are a fan!

Just four minutes into "Sins of the Past," the first episode of Xena, you'll gladly follow the warrior princess anywhere. Taking on a gang of marauders, she leaps onto an upright spear embedded in the ground and, with a cry of "Ai-yi-yi-yi-yi," does a circular wall of death on their chests. A syndication phenomenon, this audacious 1995 series was a spin-off from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Lucy Lawless stars as Xena, dressed to kill in leather and breastplate. Her exploits are legend: "She came down out of the sky in a chariot throwing thunderbolts and breathing fire," remarks one awestruck boy in the first episode. Xena wants to bury her violent past, but there is no rest for the formerly wicked as she takes up arms (and feet) against any number of villains and mythological beasts. She is joined by Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), a young peasant woman who "is not cut out for this village life," and runs away from home to join Xena in her adventures.

As the series evolved, speculation was rife about the true nature of their relationship. Playful and provocative teasers in several of these episodes give this first season an unexpected erotic charge, as witness "Altared States," in which the two skinnydip, and later, a drugged Gabrielle, revived by Xena, looks upon her and gushes, "By the gods! You are beautiful." Other memorable episodes include "Callisto," which introduces the vengeful female warrior who would further bedevil Xena in seasons to come; "Prometheus," in which Kevin Sorbo guest stars as Hercules; "Chariots of War," in which Xena wears a dress (!), and "Warrior...Princess," in which Xena trades places with her look-alike, a Princess named--yes--Diana, who is the target of assassins. By the gods, Xena is an absolute hoot whose pleasures--stylized action sequences, cheesy special effects, tongue-in-cheek anachronistic dialogue--are anything but guilty ones. Clumsy packaging, lack of commentary, and less than pristine picture quality are minor drawbacks to this otherwise thrilling set. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Xena..........2007-04-02

Episodes were almost all the same. walk through the woods, someone needs help, fight a petty wannabe warlord. However, Xena had great costumes, wonderful cinematography, interesting characters. Sometimes episodes were silly and corny, but sometimes they were serious and touching. Xena has the right touch of humor, action and drama. I love it! Sometimes the seasons are "buy 1 get 1 free". wait and get a deal.

Xena Warrior Princess Season One is the start of the epic saga that headed the television ratings for the better part of 90s.

Starring Lucy Lawless this series follows her's and her sidekick's adventures through the mythical age of Greece. It blends a harmonious mixture of comedy, friendship, love, and heart stopping action. You will feel like you are a part of the story of the most powerful women in the ancient world.

Sword fighting, flipping, acrobatic fight scenes, great actors, and a epic story make this a must for anyone who loves to see women kicking butt and taking names. Great product and Great series, you never want to see it end. It is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Very good. You must have it........2007-01-03

The video quality is not the best, actually is bad. But for the time the show was made is good enough. There is a Dolby Digital Audio (5.1) which is very good. There is not to much extras but the season it self is very good. Show everything from the beggining. If you are a fan, you must have it.

If you love girl power, good v evil, historical fiction & greek mythology; you will love Xena Warrior Princess - Season 2. Yes, it can be corny, but that is the beauty of the character & the series.

5 out of 5 stars Warrior Princess.......2006-12-22

This season was a continuation of the 1st season. I was hooked on this season as well. I really disliked the way the series ended. I can relive those days when Xena was the 'in' show to watch.

1 out of 5 stars discs won't play.......2006-09-06

This is a review of the DVDs, not the show. Both this season and season 1 have been very inferior playing quality. My compters and laptop usually give the "unsupported media" error when I insert these discs. Avoid this set. I'll not be buying any more of these inferior DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars A bit better than the first season. .......2006-08-14

So this season had a few really excelent episodes. I enjoyed the multipart story arc in which Xena was trapped in the body of Callisto. Ten Little warlords especially because we get to see Ares stripped of his godhood. The Destiny episodes were excelent as well. Karl Urban makes a great Caesar! And its nice to see him return in season 3.

5 out of 5 stars The drama with Gabrielle.......2006-08-09

This season was excellent and had a very surprise ending. I can't wait to watch season 4. The Xena series is new to me because I rarely watched it on TV. This season was worth the wait.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare yourself for the Twilight and fall of the Olympian gods. .......2006-08-13

I didn't see too many episodes of this particular season of Xena when it was on tv. I was a 10th grader in Highschool and had too much work to do, but I remember being facinated that the writers were actually planning to put an end to the gods. I think the first episode from the fifth season I'd seen was God Fearing Child which I absolutely loved. My drama instructor, who knew a heck of alot more about both Herc and Xena than I did and probably ever will because she's such a big fan, helped me out with all the questions I had concerning previous episodes. I'd seen most of the episodes dealing with Hercules and Zeus thanks to her letting me borrow some of them, and I enjoyed the final battle between father and son. I wish we could have seen Hercules again after Gfc, and in a way I guess we kinda did in those modern day episodes, but still, I would have loved to see Herc helping Xena out in the three part finale of this season. I mean, wasn't he full god then? And what the heck happened to Hera?
I was shocked when I learned of Callisto's final character development this season. But it was a welcome one. She had suffered so much, and yeah, I shed a few tears when she was finally reunited with her family and free of the hatred after so many years. I'd have loved to see her in a few more episodes. She makes a very interesting protagonist.
I wish Xena could have fought a bit more with Discord Damos and Hades before destroying them. Yeah, I might not know what's going on half the time, but I enjoy mortals beating the stuffing out of Olympians as much as the next blind guy. All that to say this. A terrific season, but I wanted more! No complaints save that one.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Season Ever.......2006-06-23

The worst Xena season ever put to film.

The X-Files managed to pull off its last two seasons mostly without the appearance of David Duchovny as Fox Mulder. It worked, as well, because the writers continued to give us good stories and characters we could care about.

Why the "powers that be" didn't do a similiar thing with this season of Xena is beyond me. Just because Lucy Lawless became pregnant didn't mean that Xena had to be with child, it just didn't make any sense. We could have had a season that was "Xena light," giving Ms. Lawless the time to have her baby, only to bring her back later. It could have worked. The X-Files made it work.

The "twilight of the gods" story arc was awful and didn't make any sense to me. There were a lot of things that bothered me concerning Xena's quest to save her daughter. It struck me as extremely hypocritical that she would easily come to Eve's defense while in the seasons past she didn't allow for Hope to be redeemed. Gabrielle's daughter deserved to die but hers didn't? Hope, just by being the daughter of Gabrielle, could have had some redeeming qualities. Of course, Xena would never allow that such a thing were possible.

Too bad. It was a good thing season six was better because I had written off the series after this season.

3 out of 5 stars Xena: Season Five - 3 Stars - DVD - unrated .......2006-03-11

Xena's fourth season (arguably the best season next to the third) ended with the shocking death of the Warrior Princess and her best friend Gabrielle via crucifixion by order of Julius Caesar who's death also followed theirs in the so famous "stabbing" provided to him by his would-be faithful Romans and long time friend Brutus. From there Season Five opens with a rather impressive first episode "Fallen Angel" which highlights' Xena and Gabrielle's near ascension to the pearly white gates of God (or The God Of Light in this series) only to be deterred by a horde of Devils led by the maniacal Callisto, who skillfully separates the duo. The season opener was amazing, however, this cannot be said about Xena's fifth season. If anything the writers fumbled miserably with the Warrior Princess' character and the storylines themselves. Perhaps and as harsh and irrational as it may sound to others, Lucy Lawless picked a lousy time to get pregnant.

Seriously, her pregnancy basically killed whatever hopes this season had of carrying on the "excellent streak" the series had. Nothing about season five was very coherent in the ways that the previous and last season was: If anything it focused perhaps far too much of Gabrielle with Lawless being pregnant and her character near useless in series until her child's birth. I felt as though they tired far too hard to force on us the "warrior path" Gabrielle had chosen, and the character herself became lost in the muddle of the so called "evolution" thrown at me, curtesy of the writers. While, yes, Gabrielle finally being able to defend herself is always a plus, her sudden ability of combat and use of the Sai's were unlogical. Despite the fact that she indeed rode with Xena for Four years, Gabrielle is never shown taking a bit of interest in Xena teaching her fighting skills (it was quite the opposite in fact). The petty squabbles between Xena and Gabrielle were arbitrary drama, especially in episodes like "Seeds of Faith" or "Succession" and "Back in the Bottle," all of which were dull episodes. "The Twilight Of The Gods" story arc was probably the best out the entire season, aside from the occasional glitch in the system with the storyline (The Miraculous conception of Xena's baby because she saves Callisto from torment in Hell and the sudden power to kill Gods, given to her by a messenger of a GOD himself. I mean, what gives "God" in Xena?).

That aside, all twenty-two minus episodes were like episode fillers surrounding Gabrielle since Xena's pregnancy was something to poke fun at with a stick. From getting writers block in "Punch lines" - to becoming Goldie Hawn in "Married with Fishsticks," the so called evolution of Gabrielle from peace loving side kick with a staff to demi-warrior with Ralphel's twin sai's is lost in the haze shameless humor and arbitrary drama concerning the character. When baby Eve is born, its all breast-feeding and running from the Gods of Olympus for the Warrior Princess who finally steps back into the limelight as a fighter, but a fighter who has become consideringly meek and more geared to pleading with Ares and others to save her child, compared to how she was previously. Other characters of the series are immediately killed off as the series since their presence are not important to the writers nor the series any longer. A more prominent example is in the episode "Eve" - Joxer is killed straight away by Xena's evil daughter, Liva "champion of Rome," without remorse. Indeed the worse thing is his getting killed is that he was in the middle of Xena's attempt to rescue Gabrielle herself! While this never occured to me during the viewing, I realize its a lousy way to kill off a character. In spite of his annoying demeanor, his death was indeed held shock value. I would've felt perhaps worse for the Gods if they had not changed a majority of the actors with unrecognizable actors with the exception of "Discord," - "CGI Poseidon," and "Athena," who I felt worse for at the season finale than anything (Athena, I mean).

The character Liva/Eve would've been a great catalyst for the show as well if the writers had paid more attention to detail to the "why" this character did a "Callisto and Xena" and slaughtered Eli's followers for Rome. Instead in the course of the episode following "Livia" ("Eve") we are thrown a horrible ending for the dark side of the character. Her being shown the light by the powers of Eli's spirit and suddenly accepting her rightful name and weeps over her evil deeds screams "last minute writing." However, S5 manages to redeem itself with a gripping episode like "Motherhood" which showcases Xena using ruthless force to protect her guilt-ridden daughter from all enemies, including her best friend. Xena hitting Gabrielle with her chakram instead of choosing the later is in itself is creepy and almost hard concept to grasp, given the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle, but understandable if you look at from a desperate mother's point of view. While "Motherhood" was riddled with plot problems ultimately tying with the Furies and Destruction of the Gods save two and others, it showcased some of the best action scenes this season EVER! Other positives of Season of Five include the appearance of Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) in "God fearing Child" and Alti (Claire Standsfield?) in "Them Bones, Them Bones."

The Warrior combines gorgeous cinematography, complex historical politics, and joltingly bloody action sequences to create a sweeping historical spectacular. A squadron of Korean soldiers, sent to protect a diplomatic envoy to China, find themselves unmoored when the envoys are killed in clashes with Chinese and Mongol soldiers. Struggling to return home, they rescue a high-handed Chinese princess (Ziyi Zhang, House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and decide that protecting her is their best chance to survive, and possibly improve Korean-Chinese relations as well. Unfortunately, the Mongols want her back, and the squadron find their numbers slowly diminishing as they fight their way to an isolated military outpost. Though there's a more realistic context for the action--The Warrior is based on a historical event and the characters are well-developed--the battle scenes deliver some visceral thrills; the violence is graphic (beheadings, arrows plunging into necks, limbs sliced off) but grippingly choreographed. An above-average action movie; however, it is highly recommended that viewers watch it with subtitles, as the dubbing is typically wretched. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2007-02-01

A lot of blood and guts...but also is very deep with emotion. Very honorable flick. I was impressed that I didnt feel like it was over 2 hours long.

1 out of 5 stars BORING.......2006-12-18

The movie was simply boring. Do not buy this DVD. The storytelling was slow. There were a couple of shots that could have been edited out. Within the first 10 - 15 minutes there were shots that did nothing to add, develop or enhance the story line. Boring. The costume, cinematography, fight choreography, etc., all lackluster and subpar. I'm not necessarily asking for a big budget martial arts epic, but this was not good. The english dubbed is amusingly bad. I do think part of the soundtrack was dropped. I also have a problem with the voice talent that they used for this film. Maybe I'm used to the voice talents from older martial arts films like Five Deadly Venoms. Oh, I did fall asleep while watching this film.

3 out of 5 stars Ummm.......2006-09-13

There wasn't much plot and it didn't really make sense. For being the founding Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang sure tried real hard to find his daughter. 3 stars for the cinematography.

I do like how the relationship between the princess and the slave developed mainly through looks and actions rather than lines.

That old archer dude was awesome, whereas the main Korean general guy just got on my nerves all the time. He did a lot of yelling for no reason and I was like good riddance when he died.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2006-07-17

I Agree with one of the reviews up above about the original korean or China dvd with english subtitles. The subtitles are setup perfectly throughout the movie to where you can read and follow a long and no miss a moment of the action. This is a great movie if you understand the culture that asia was at this particular time.

4 out of 5 stars Reluctant heroes trying to find a way home..........2006-05-25

Musa is about a band of koreans on a diplomatic mission in China that goes array. After being exiled into the desert they run into a captured princess. She promises them a boat if they deliver her home, and the koreans reason if they save her they can return to their own home victorious. There are several complex emotions that come into play. The Korean leader is full of self doubt and is also competing for the attention of the princess against a slave. The Koreans are resentful of said princess, blaming all of their woes on her. The princess herself is determined to maintain status and composure, however the deaths of her people and the Koreans began to take its toll. Musa is a grand epic, based on the simple desire to see one's home again. The battle scenes are well shot, and action does not let up. The final battle is especially good, focusing on the sacrifices and the bonds that the Koreans have made with the Hans. Musa means warrior, and the movie does not focus so much on just one, but all of them. When the inevitable happens it is enough to bring tears to even the most hardened eyes.

1 out of 5 stars A big letdown...!!.......2007-06-23

I'd have to guess that most of the reviews about this product, especially the super long ones, are plants. Because I loved season one through three, but this season...season four...is just a major bore! A real snoozer! What the heck happened? Was it true like a friend of mine said, they got writers from the failed Hercules series and they brought this one down too? I've have this package, season four for over two and a half years, and haved tried to watch the episodes a bunch of times...but a real bore. !! Not even interested in season five or six if this is how the series turned out.

4 out of 5 stars A huge step forward in story arc of an excellent TV series.......2006-09-30

The truly remarkable thing about Xena the Warrior Princess over its six-year run is not that it was one of the first series to show women as fighters who could hold their own. (Xena never needed a guy to step in and save her.) No, the really interesting thing about this series is that it was carried by two women characters... whose strengths and flaws, insecurities, doubts and struggles were central to the whole six-year epic story arc. With each season, the series grew a bit more complex. Season 3 was brilliant for its darkness, the "rift" of jealousy and betrayal in the partnership between Xena and Gabrielle. The end of Season 3, episodes Sacrifice 1 and 2 were an amazing testament to how much these two characters mean to each other. Season 4 carries this arc even further, with the first two episodes dedicated to Xena's search for Gabrielle, much more backstory about Xena's mean and murderous past (and the nasty friends she kept), and then deepening as Gabrielle tries to reconcile living life with a warrior while trying to find her own way as a non-violent person. This season is brilliant in the way it reveals so many shades of gray, so many conflicted feelings. Is violence always bad? What does self-sacrifice accomplish? How much do we owe to free will and how much to fate? And how much is just trusting your gut to do the right thing--no matter what that is--when the time comes. There are some of the series' best episodes here: Between the Lines, which shows Xena and Gabrielle fighting injustices through a future lifetime in which Xena is the Mother of Peace and Gabrielle a warrior prince, reveals the relationship between the two characters as something much bigger and more profound than they (or we) ever previously thought. End Game and Ides of March are just plain amazing. This season demonstrated what XWP the entire series was really about: The way of love (or friendship). Some of the themes and episodes in this season are the foundation of many references and excellent episodes in subsequent seasons. There are more episodes in later seasons that explore Xena and Gabrielle's future lives. Others that touch on the notions that these characters were destined to be together no matter what. Others that explore the shades of gray between peace and violence in even finer detail. On a more critical note, in this season, as in all of the others, there are a handful of great episodes, some okay episodes and a few clunkers. A Tale of Two Muses (or XWP's version of "Footloose") is just plain dumb, and Daughter of Pomira is flat and uninteresting (harking back to the "dispatching-the-baddies-of-the-week" formula of Seasons 1 and 2. By Season 4, we're all hanging on this series for its development of the main characters, for the sly and campy humor, etc. We're way past being interested in the old schtick. But this is a minor criticism, really, of a TV series that during its time took so many risks, managed to mixed light and dark, slapstick and melodrama, as it tried so many weird and wonderful things. It can be forgiven if not every episode is a perfect 10. This show in its entirety is still some of the best television I've ever watched. I've cared more about these characters than any others. That's perhaps the biggest accomplishment of the show, its producers, writers and actors. And a remarkable accomplishment given that many people might easily never watch Xena Warrior Princess--assuming it to be nothing more than a silly, campy costume comedy. Sure, it was that. But it was so much more, too.

1 out of 5 stars Great 3 Episodes but you Save Money by Buying the First Season.......2006-06-19

I love these three epsidoes which introduced Xena and they are essentail if you are a Hercules or Xena fan. If you want to buy them though I would suggest buying the complete first season of Hercules. You get five full tv movies, these three episodes, and ten more episodes for fifteen dollars. You save eight dollars and you get so much more.

3 out of 5 stars good episodes, overpriced.......2006-05-13

These 3 episodes of Hercules the Legendary journeys are available here for one price, but are also available as part of Hercules Season One for a lower price, (plus you get the rest of the season) and you can see the episodes in context. Also Herc season 1 contains 5 tv movies, 3 of which are really quite good. (the 1st is a bit weak and the 5th is a re-hash of the other four) Movie 1 has Lucy Lawless in a non-xena bit part, and Movie 2 has Renee O'Connor in a featured role. So if you get that set you'll get everything you get here, plus a lot more stuff, and it is A LOT CHEAPER.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!!.......2005-03-01

this is a great dvd, I advise this item for any die-hard xena fan! But only one problem, there are no special feature's! No commentary no nothing and that's a waist! Well I hope this review was helpful to anyone!

1 out of 5 stars this sux.......2004-07-06

this item is soo bad dont buy it its very boring n not helpful i recomend u buy seasons.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but different than you may expect........2004-01-06

Before you watch this DVD, keep in mind that they are episodes of Hercules, and are quite different. It isn't the best...at this point, the character of Xena had a lot of bugs to work out. Her outfit is black instead of brown, her hair is lighter, and although she has her shakram, her battle cry needed a LOT of work. Lucy Lawless' acting skills aren't quite as good as you can imagine, when compared to later episodes of Xena. The episodes are entertaining enough, and it's good to know how Xena came about, but I'm still wondering why they call her warrior princess. The DVD lacks bonus features, and there is no chaptering and it starts out with the first episode instead of the Menu. You have to go through the menu to switch episodes and the menu iself is pretty boring, with no intros or animations. Despite these facts, I still think they are worth watching and adding to and Xena fan collection.

I had to watch this for a class project and I loved it!!!! I plan on purchasing this movie because I have to see it again. Very created plot.

5 out of 5 stars Expect the Unexpected.......2006-12-28

I have wanted to see this movie for a long time and finally I bought it and it was so worth the wait!

Franka Potente & Benno Fürmann give fantastic performances in this film. This is the first movie I had seen Potente but I was familiar with Benno Fürmann after being captivated by him in "The Order"(he played his character with such depth and intrigue in that film). Benno Fürmann has a way of making you have sympathy for his characters even though at times their actions are in the extremes.

This is the sort of movie you want to see over and over because of the intense strong scenes throughout. Even now as I write this I want to see it again to further grasp the underlining emotional trauma of the characters.

One could say this movie is a love story but not at all in the traditional sense. There is no formula or obvious pattern to where this movie eventually leads, you just have to buckle up and enjoy the ride.... Just like a roller coaster this movie shocks you, breaks your heart and makes you smile.

5 out of 5 stars DISCLAIMER: this movie is not a light little faiy tale as the title would suggest. Promise........2006-11-20

I bought this movie the moment i found it in the tiny little foreign film section of my local record store. My film teacher showed a small scene of it in class one afternoon. She had also introduced me to other amazing works that seem to go unnoticed such as the emotionally draining "dancer in the dark" and the transcendent love story "heaven".

though we never watched the full film, the one scene showed from the princess and the warrior stayed with me for months. after watching tykwer's "heaven", i was immediately intrigued by this film, so when i happened upon it, i clenched it in my tiny little fists, ran home, sat down and prepared myself to be amazed.

I watched this film all the way through. but it wasn't enough. I could see what had just taken place in front of me. I could feel the images i had just seen still fresh in my mind. I could still hear the screams of our tortured protagonist, echoing in a stale reverberation in my mind but it just wasn't enough. I hit the play button again. I just had to watch it, at least once more this evening. I had to see the vivid colors, the playful cinematography, i had to witness the comfortable distinction of tykwer's direction, the beauty and signifigance of the editing in every scene...everything about it was hauntingly beautiful, a dark, morose twist on the classic "girl-meets-boy" love story.

this is one of those films. it's one of those films that has enough power to change you, if you let it.

I will stray from giving you a personal analysis as i wouldn't want to influence yours.

this is, hands down, the greatest movie i have ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars Engage your mind, senses and emotion.......2006-09-17

I got this movie because I'm a new fan of Franka Potente. She transforms herself perfectly in every film I've seen so far. I was not disappointed. The detailed circle of this movie's plot is amazingly engaging. Even though fantasy enters the picture, realism captures your attention and doesn't let go. Action, emotion, thought and the raw human condition whirl in a harmonious and fascinating combo that will make you want to share the experience. Several elements come together well. And don't miss the deleted scenes.

3 out of 5 stars a feeling of sadness from beginning to near end.......2006-06-12

This is an interesting movie, at times a little far-fetched but still well made.
Most of the acting is more subtle rather than over the top (except for the mental patients) and the dialogue is reasonably minimalistic.
The majority of main characters in this film are flawed in some kind of way. They all deal with some kind of grief, they all have a mental problem or their whole existence is sad.
At times the dialogue got a little infuriating; Sissi and Bodo, Bodo especially, don't have a lot of dialogue. As a result the characters aren't developed as quickly as we'd like.

One thing about this movie is that it has a very depressing atmosphere. Leading right up to the end it is full of an existential kind of sadness and I kept expecting some cruel twist of fate to separate Sissi and Bodo, and of course there's the section where (spoiler) it appears they both commit suicide together - and then all that is changed.

The ending I found quite similar to a french movie Le Homme Du Train, "The man on the train" in the way a change of life is represented. It is a fitting ending but at the same time there is a slight feeling that the whole swapping thing is a bit of a visual gimmick.

Unless you analyse it heavily the flaws aren't too obvious. All in all a good film.

2 out of 5 stars What happens when..........2005-11-12

... you take a popular concept (in this case, Indiana Jones), fuse it with heaping helpings of spaghetti western trappings, and insert a Bo Derek-lookalike in the title role? Why, you get YELLOW HAIR AND THE FORTRESS OF GOLD, a lame, low-budget western from 1984 with a feeble grasp of any of the elements that made the Indy movies, or Italian westerns, popular in the first place.

Laurene Landon plays Yellow Hair, a young white woman who, as a young child, was adopted by an Apache tribe after she was abandoned (or something) by her birth parents. Yellow Hair grows up to be the toughest kick boxer of her tribe. We see her first as she's rather decisively beating up a young Apache brave. Then it's off to spring the Pecos Kid (Ken Roberson) from his cell in a Spanish fort commanded by an unfunnily effeminate Colonel Torres (Luis Lorenzo.) And then... but, heck, what does it matter? There's a missing gold nugget that has to be retrieved so Yellow Hair's adopted mother can die easy, a horn to be blown at the Canyon with No Echo, and a Man Who Knows to be visited.

If, as seems to be the case, YELLOW HAIR intended to repeat the breakneck pace and high humor of the Indiana Jones franchise, it fails miserably. True, the film moves from one adventure to the next, but there the similarities end. The pacing is leaden, the jokes feeble, and someone forgot to buckle the swash. There are a couple of interesting scenes - Yellow Hair and Pecos Kid being chased while driving a stagecoach comes to mind - but for the most part it's just an embarrassing copy of a popular formula.

3 out of 5 stars B (or C) Movie Western.......2003-09-19

Pretty standard movie for the era, involving brutal tortures of gold hunters in the opening scenes, the twisted, comical Spanish/Mexican general as the evil villian, "noble" savages, a lost inca temple, humor, a tough (and very plain) leading lady, an easy-going western hero, this is a Western adventure. Bar fights, stage coach chases, running out of ammo, snakes in tumble weeds hured at the enemy, neither nudity nor sex - wasn't anything new for westerns. Acting was sometimes cheesy, film was not always perfect but was okay, it starts as if it's part of a cliffhanger series ("Last time our hero...") and ends as one. Hard core western fans might want to give it a try and people wih simple tastes. I was tempted to give it 2 stars - it's pretty vanilla - but I don't watch movies I don't think I'll like.
