Description

One of the most intriguing mysteries is whether or not there is another plane of existence beyond our own. Shades of Darkness delves into the world of the supernatural with six bizarre, inexplicable and frightening ghost stories as told by some of the greatest mystery authors of all time. (Elizabeth Bowen, C.H.B. Kitchin, May Sinclair, Edith Wharton)

Bewitched
Eileen Atkins (She Fell Among Thieves) plays the wife of a once robust man who seems to be wasting away to nothing. She knows why: He's having a love affair with the restless ghost of another villager's dead daughter. The local minister takes her seriously because he knows the villagers once burned a member of the same family for witchcraft.

The Intercessor
John Duttine stars as a young historian who seeks a quiet place in the country where he can write in peace. His sole stipulation: he can't abide children because they're so noisy. So naturally, he's kept awake at night by the eerie sound of a child's ghostly crying.

The Lady's Maid's Bell
Joanna David (Rebecca) stars as Hartley, the new maid to Mr. and Mrs. Brympton, whose household is believed to be haunted by the spirit of their last maid, Emma. Sure enough, the ghostly Emma soon turns up, drawing Hartley into the scandalous gonis-on between Mrs. Brympton and her randy next-door neighbor, Mr. Ranford.

Afterward
An unusual twist on the standard story of young newlyweds who buy a beautiful old house only to find that it's haunted. In this case, a young American husband and his wife come to England, purposely looking for a grand old haunted house. They get the house and are assured a ghost will make an appearance before too long. For once, the real estate agent didn't sell them a bill of goods. There is a ghost all right, but its' one the husband hoped he'd never have to face.

The Maze
Francesa Annis (Partners in Crime) plays Catherine, a woman who comes back to her ancestral home after many years. Her 8 year-old daughter, Daisy, is fascinated by the maze of hedges in the garden, but Catherine is deathly afraid of what might lurk there. One day Daisy takes the hand of a strange man and follows him into the maze.

The Demon Lover
When a young man sets out to fight in the First World War, his lover vows that they will be reunited, no matter what might happen to him. She soon comes to regret her noble sentiments.

5 out of 5 stars Understated Creepiness.......2007-05-17

Shades of Darkness is a British production which was shown in the US on PBS' "Mystery" about 1984. I enjoyed it then and waited anxiously but fruitlessly for a rerun, so I am glad that at last it is available on DVD.

Each segment of Shades of Darkness is about an hour long and is drawn from short stories by Edith Wharton, Elizabeth Bowen, and other luminaries. The scripts are literate and faithful to the original stories.

The most pleasing thing about these short films is their ability to create an atmosphere of creepiness mounting to horror without having to fall back on the old horror movie standbys of fanged monsters and bloodshed. These are stories of people going about their ordinary lives who gradually become aware of the presence of the supernatural. My favorite episode is "Afterward" by Edith Wharton, where the viewer, like the principal character, doesn't even recognize the ghost is a ghost when it appears.

If you are accustomed to seeing horror delivered through the blows of an axe or by screaming monsters you will find Shades of Darkness just as frightening but far more equivocal and intriguing.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of wierd tales.......2007-04-03

We bought two copies, one for someone who had seen "The Maze" long ago and is still talking about it, and one for ourselves. I had never seen any of these before. They are all good, and some are even better than "The Maze" -- excellent cast and a distinguished list of authors too.

5 out of 5 stars I searched for this for years - and it was worth the search........2007-02-23

If this set contained only May Sinclair's "The Interessor" it would still be worth quadruple the amount. Based on one of the best ghost stories ever written, an M.R. Jamesian historian who can't stand the sound of children has his working vacation in a very damp Welsh farm house disrupted by a little drowned spectre who sobs at his bedside. And in a strange reversal, he isn't at all afraid of her...

4 out of 5 stars Hit or miss series--more hits than misses.......2007-01-24

I'd been wanting to see this series for years and now (most of) it's finally on DVD. Very gloomy, shot on-location ghosts stories: decaying country houses, seaside graveyards, muddy roads, but all done with the utmost respect for the material and the genre. I actually haven't watched the final tale ("The Demon Lover") yet.

The story "The Maze" left me indifferent, and has an embarrassingly directed sex/wood-cutting scene, and lots of that awful tinkly piano music that's supposed to sound suspenseful. This is NOT characteristic of the other tales, whose music is much more appropriate and less distracting. The acting is actually quite good, but I just couldn't get into it. Even the hedge maze is disappointing--more like a halfhearted smattering of old bushes. Oh well.

"Afterward" is excellent (I'm quite a fan of the Edith Wharton tale): perfect location, period detail, just the right moodiness, smartly underused musical scoring, etc. The woman who plays the main character is outstanding, and we get a real sense of her choking, mute dread--the devastating truth she's unable to articulate or fully understand. The actor who plays her husband is stiff but serves his purpose and disappears soon enough.

"The Intercessor" and "Bewitched" are both beautifully done, BEAUTIFULLY acted, and more emotionally involving than might seem possible with ghost stories. I was really impressed. Eileen Atkins OWNS her role, and makes it something deeply ambiguous. These tales aren't really about ghosts; they're about the trials of the living, for which the ghosts provide poignant counterpoint. (Note: One of these two tales is so brilliantly told you might not even realize there's no ghost in it!).

"The Lady Maid's Bell." Not the strongest of the tales, but very atmospheric. As the first on the lineup it provides a nice prolog to the others, establishing mood and tone. And I enjoyed the ambiguous ending.

As stated in another review, the pacing of these six mini-movies is rather slow, but not too slow. We're allowed to absorb and contemplate the environments, and get the sense that the characters are moving through actual time, not skipping from one jarringly edited scene to the next. If you long for the days when you first read Poe, if you remember most fondly not Halloween itself but the bleak quiet weeks leading up to it, when you explored that old barn in the meadow or made up ghost stories around the fire, believing every word, these DVDs are for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent series.......2007-03-29

I love this series, ever since I saw an episode on The Independant Film Channel I was hooked. This is a great story and has beautiful animation. The voices (both Japanese and American) and done very well, far from some other very disappointing dubs I've come across lately. You won't be let down, check this out on the IFC if you want a free preview.

    5 out of 5 stars Basilisk Review.......2007-02-09

Basilisk combines a "Romeo & Juliet"-type love story with Naruto-style ninja action, and throws in some of the most violent death scenes ever seen in a Japanese anime. If you're into any or all of the above, you can't miss out on Basilisk.

EXCELLENT! Just what you want in this type of low budget production, a film where the director/producer actually shows loads of full frontal female nudity just for the sake of showing it!!!!!! It is actually quite a good campy schlock movie played for laughs in the right dosages and even has a bit of decent gore. The plot is as shown as in the Amazon review and is certainly one of those great classics movies to watch after a fill of beer and curry.

In Forty Shades of Blue, writer/director Ira Sachs takes three archetypes--temperamental artist, trophy wife, and brooding writer--and turns them into real people. Alan (Rip Torn, The Larry Sanders Show), producer of numerous R&B hits, is a Memphis legend in the Sam Phillips mold. On a trip to Russia a few years ago, he met the much younger Laura (Dina Korzun, Last Resort), who became his common-law wife. They had a child. It should be a good life, except fidelity is not part of Alan's vocabulary. Michael (Darren Burrows, Northern Exposure), adult son from one of his many previous marriages, is an English teacher and aspiring author. When Michael travels from LA for a rare visit, he quickly realizes it's easier to talk to Laura than to his own father--or even his own wife, who decides to join him later. The more Alan, who perceives himself as a man of action, ignores Laura and belittles the introspective Michael, however, the closer they become. But how much of their attraction is based on lust and how much is based on a mutual desire to get back at the larger-than-life hitmaker for his misdeeds? Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Forty Shades of Blue may sound like soap opera, but in the patient, attentive hands of Sachs (The Delta), it never plays like it. Alan, Michael, and Laura are neither heroes nor villains; just three lonely people trapped in self-contained worlds of their own creation. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars I love this film........2007-05-16

I love how the story unfolds, the beautiful flawed characters, the simplicity of the performances, every single one. I could feel the strain in the married couple's interactions, as well as hope and perhaps surrender. Rip Torn is fun to watch in this film as well as others, but I was completely blown away by Darren Burrow's performance. (My mind was like, holy cow, that guy played Ed Chigliak in the Northern Exposure series.) Even without the comparison, his performance, restrained and so completely authentic, is over the top, fantastic. The entire film just hits an authentic chord.

3 out of 5 stars generally interesting drama.......2007-01-02

"Forty Shades of Blue" features Rip Torn as an acerbic, hard-drinking music producer in Memphis who, though greatly beloved by his fans and the people in the industry, is viewed somewhat differently by those who know him best. Despite his advanced age, he has a gorgeous live-in girlfriend, Laura (Dina Korzun), whom he met while on a business trip to Russia and, even though they seem to be reasonably devoted to one another and their relationship, Laura is becoming increasing morose as a result of his constant philandering. When Alan's married son, Michael (Darren E. Burrows) - who has reasons of his own for resenting the man - comes from California for a visit, he and Laura enter into a secret love affair that forces her to finally question her commitment to Alan and to perhaps cut the chords - both obligatory and emotional - that bind her to him.

Although the script does an effective job capturing the tensions simmering just beneath the surface of the story, the plot itself seems too conventional and too underdeveloped to engage the viewer completely. Still the characters are complex enough and the performances sufficiently layered to at least hold our interest throughout. Torn is particularly good at creating a character whose amiability and likeability on the surface mask a callousness and mean-spiritedness below.

This is a subtle, if not exactly gripping, study of the compromises we make - and the choices we come to regret - in our effort to avoid loneliness and to find meaning and happiness in life.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, quite moving.......2006-09-10

I don't think I've seen a movie as good, in a long, long time. One of the ironies of life, is that we make some of our largest commitments with our feelings, our "hearts" rather than our minds. This story is about a woman seeking love, letting her heart (and sometimes other parts) make her decisions for her, and it generally destroys her life, and that of the man most committed to her. There aren't any real antagonists to speak of in this story, but there certainly are winners and losers. Is there a better metaphor for life itself?

5 out of 5 stars Now THIS is a movie.......2006-09-04

This is the best movie I've seen in a long, long time. Rip Torn is perfect for this role; and the actress playing his wife is as well. If you like character studies, the finest cinematography around, the best script writing, excellent directing and feeling like you are a "fly on the wall" in the finest drama you have ever seen---buy this film. It never lets up, it never overdoes, it just gives you exactly what you need. And all without anyone blowing anyone elses brains out!

    1 out of 5 stars Truly a horrible movie.......2006-08-01

One of the worst movies I've seen. Dialogs are slow and every single performance is emotionless. I did not build any kind of sympathy towards Rip Torn's character or his wife. Yeah, you do get a sense that she's lonely, you do get a sense that he is a has-been still living the life of the rich and famous and you do see his somewhat distant son get it on with his mother-in-law. But might as well read it here as you'll feel no emotion whatsoever finding it out in the movie. The music is the only thing that spares it from being terrible.
This movie is ranked right at the bottom of my list along with Van Sant's Last Days. People seem to overrate these pieces of film waste just because they're different. But my God, you can be different and good, entertaining and thought-provoking.

movie is well made, however, they left out english sub-titles. The sub-titles are in Spanish only. What a bummer!

3 out of 5 stars Two Shades of Blue -- Movie Satisfactory.......2000-11-10

Framed for murder Susan Price, (Rachel Hunter) will stop at nothing to clear her name.

I can say I liked this movie despite the fact, at times the plot is strained and the movie predictable. A good portion of the movie takes place in a telephone relay center for the deaf. There are scenes in the movie that are disturbing or unsettling. To me the movie borders an R/X rating. Curtain parts of this movie (the disturbing scenes) remind me of the rating controversy over "Fatal Attraction" when it first came out with Glen Close and Michael Douglas. That said...

"Two shade of Blue" has an impressive cast which includes Eric Roberts, Rachel Hunter, Marlee Matlin, "Children of a Lesser God," and Anthony Natale, "Mr. Holland's Opus" and "His Bodyguard." Both Matlin and Natale are deaf actors.

Being a fan of both Matlin and Natale is what drew me to view this film. Also, I am myself physically challenged. It is good to see "true" disabled or physically challenged actors get lead or supporting roles in films today. Anthony Natale gives a satisfying yet justified performance as the character `Todd". Natale works well opposite Hunter, who plays "Judy/Susan Price". A lady gone undercover to catch a killer. Given what she had to work with Marlee Matlin's performance was mediocre at best.

As this review is being written I can say, I have not seen much in the way of Eric Roberts's performances. He is however very good a being bad.

Though I think "Two Shade of Blue" is a satisfactory movie as a whole film. Might I recommend, if you are considering a purchase of this film to rent it first to save on disappointment and money spent. This suspense drama is not for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Two Shades of Blue.......2000-06-11

This is a great story with an impressive cast. Supermodel Rachel Hunter gives a noteworthy performance as Susan Price, a woman on the run who's been framed for murder. Hunter loses her fortune, changes her identity and becomes a relay operator for the hearing impaired to catch the real killer. Hunter's on-screen chemistry with veteran bad boy actor Gary Busey is impressive. This supermodel can act. Hearing impaired actor Anthony Natale (Mr. Holland's Opus) gives a satisfying performance, as does A.J. Johnson. Rachel Hunter has remarkable chemistry with her co-stars, however the saving grace of this movie is Academy Award® winner Marlee Matlin, who delivers a sexy performance as the deaf District Attorney who is caught in a web of murder, betrayal and sexual deceit. In a clever script by first-time writer Ted Williams "Two Shades of Blue" takes us behind closed doors of interesting characters who reveal their darker side. Ted Williams does a nice job exposing us to the often ignored voyeuristic world of the hearing impaired. What's particularly interesting about this movie is the realistic behind-the-scenes look at the relay service for the deaf, and how it works. Matlin, in what may be the steamiest performance of her career, shows us that deaf people can be sexy too, and she does so in good taste. Eric Roberts is always worth mentioning. Roberts makes the film fun to watch and he is obviously having fun playing Calvin Stassi: the two-timing villain who womanizes Hunter and Matlin.

The film's technical credits fall short of sophomoric. First-time director James Deck seems to have been asleep at the helm, leaving these great actors to fend for themselves. The visual style required for this genre would have been better off in the hands of a seasoned director such as Martin Scorsese or Brian De Palma. However, there is little wonder why Marlee Matlin and the other stars were attracted to the script. It's an intriguing and well-written story. With Rachel Hunter in nearly every scene, the film is a worth while attempt at what otherwise, could have been a brilliant murder mystery.

    1 out of 5 stars Wasted talent.......2000-06-07

This film features a great cast, including Marlee Matlin, Eric Roberts, Gary Busey, and supermodel Rachel Hunter, but all this talent is wasted in a convoluted story about how Hunter's character has been framed for murder. Hunter is nothing more than so-so as an actress and she looks terrible in the movie, first in a horrible dirty-blonde wig and then in a lousy black dye job. How can you make a supermodel look this bad? The majority of the film involves watching Hunter, Matlin and Roberts converse via telephone and computer, so you'll either be asleep or using the fast-forward button in no time. The ending features several unintentionally funny moments, including a ludicrous shoot-out scene.

In Paris, professional assassin Mireille Bouquet meets emotionally shattered Kirika Yumura: neither woman can remember her past, but they're both extremely good at killing people. (Kirika doesn't even look--she just points the gun and fires and her victim falls.) The two women form a partnership as "Noir," but after a couple of murders for hire, they realize someone is trying to kill them. The mysterious Soldats seem to be everywhere, so it's kill or be killed. The only recurring characters in Noir are amnesiacs, who are essentially blank slates and therefore not very interesting. Director Kouichi Mashimo may set a new record for repeating footage in an animated series--some shots crop up three times in a single episode, including portentous images whose significance is more apparent than real. The result feels like a watered-down combination of Gunsmith Cats and Serial Experiments Lain. (Rated 15 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

      5 out of 5 stars Very Impressed.......2006-06-22

Iv'e been watching anime for a while now, and I have to say after viewing many amazing series(Examples: Gankutsuou, Kino's Journey, paranoia agent, cowboy bebop, Elfen Lied etc, etc) to be perfectly honest Noir ranks up there right with the greats, this is a truely A-List title.
Firstly I would like to say that before watching Noir I wasn't really expecting much, I had read quite a few negative reviews stating that it was very slow moving and that it was difficult to pay close attention to, and I only have one thing to say, I'm sorry but... Noir is only slow if you have the attention span of a cockroach; this show is not slow at all. Look, just because something isn't happening every two seconds dosn't mean a series is slow, it just a little mellow, thats all. The plot moves at a perfectly fine rate, unfolding into a very interesting story, and theres plenty of action. Not only that but the initial start of the backstory begins as early as episode three, which I was glad to see. This provided me with enough intrigue to actually become very excided about what was to happen next. Also why is everyone complaining about Kirika and Merielle (sorry if thats wrong)not being likeable? For one thing their both assassins, the amount of sympathy your supposed to feel for these characters early on is very questionable. Another thing, who cares if Merielle and Kirika are not exactly what you would call the big hero protagonists, to tell you the truth I'm getting so tired of these little goody two shoed, annoying, emo little good doers running around every anime you see (*cough* *cough* Edward Elric). It's much more interesting to have the main characters this way, it provides more intrigue. And I think they are both extremely likeable.
I would also like to say that Noir, visually, is quite a treat. The show is absolutely gorgeous, backgrounds and all. The only thing that bothers me a little bit is the lack of blood when the people are shot, it just looks sort of awkward sometimes, but it's very forgivable, at least when the people get shot it's realistic, which is something.
On a final note the english dub here is excellent. The VA's for both Kirika and Merielle are excellent, and even the background characters who all speak with accents are suprisingly pulled off very well, they all did an excellent job.

So overall I would say that you should all definitely check Noir out. Like I said I didn't think it was slow at all, but yet the plot may not appeal to everyone. Try borrowing it from a friend first, or rent it, or download it if you can, but if you like, mature, sophisticated anime, then don't miss this title.

      5 out of 5 stars Astounding anime.......2005-08-12

I must say I was quite impressed with this anime. Everything from music to story to characters, this is a definite masterpiece series. I learned about this anime after watching some previews from my Full Metal Panic DVDs. I figured this one looked good and I decided to give it a try.

Since it's only Vol.1, it's difficult to put the whole thing in words. Mystery is the theme of this anime. So much of it that it gets baffling at times, but once again, it's only Vol.1, so don't expect answers right away. You have two female characters, one from Japan and the other from France, who are skilled at killing. The Japanese girl has no memory of her past, all she knows is that she is very skilled at killing. The French woman is a professional assassin, renown for her ability to kill without much evidence left behind. They band together under the name Noir, which seems to strike fear into the hearts of people as it is a well known organization. The only thing that bonds the two females together is a silver pocketwatch that plays a sad melody when opened. Mireille, the French woman, has seen the watch before, but why and why does Kirika possess such a thing? Mysterious...

Speaking of music, .hack's Yuki Kajiura has produced the music for this anime. For those of you who watched .hack, Yuki's realm of music is techno/opera, a combination of genres that isn't exactly unheard of. After watching the first volume, you might be tempted to go get the soundtrack (I was).

I would give this anime a try if you're looking for something a bit on the dark and intriguing side, I recommend Noir. It does mean black in French after all.

      3 out of 5 stars A Bit of a Yawn.......2005-07-21

From the descriptions I read of "Noir," and the sleekly designed black DVD, I expected something cutting-edge and urban. To my disappointment, there is nothing sleek and urban about Noir, except the name.

Professional assassin Mireille works in Paris, taking jobs via e-mail. Mireille is stereotypically blond and blue-eyed. Her character design looks like it is from the 1980's. She meets a strange girl with amnesia. This girl kills without effort. Mireille teams up with the girl (known as Noir) because Noir has a strangely-designed pocket watch which Mireille remembers from her past. But Mireille tells the teen, "We'll work together, but then I'll have to kill you." Yeah, riiiiiiiight.

It is hard to have sympathy for either character, as they kill many people without heart. I can understand Noir a little, yet she committs an extremely heartless act in the fourth episode. Mireille is a heartless b**ch.

The backdrops of Paris are good. Obviously the art staff worked very hard. It is a shame that this DVD, containing five episodes, is full of repetitive music and flashbacks, which repeat themselves endlessly in each episode.

I will keep watching because I want to find out the mystery, but I will not be recommending this series to my friends.

Extras include production art sketches and Japanese promos. The art sketches are flowing, so you don't have to keep clicking for the next one, which is good, because there are a LOT of sketches.

      3 out of 5 stars whole series-slightly over-rated.......2005-03-22

After reading all the positive reviews, I saw/got the series, NOIR.

As reviewers correctly pointed out, the lack of blood & perfect shooting was a let-down. I did not have a problem about not seeing blood from the gunshots ie I dont have blood-lust I guess, but the real problem was that both, especially Kirika, are super-human crackshots. There was no backstory to explain this prowess.

I'm sorry but practicing shooting tight groups in underground does not constitute super-killing maching status. As least neo & trinity are in a make-believe world to be able to pull their feats & ELEKTRA was a ninja. Especially when you 26 episodes, you could afford to show what training these "girls" receive to be such in-human shooting skill.

ALthough this may appeal to girls & the female persuasion, but all the victims were 95% men. I don't have a problem w/ girls & guns as I love rally vincent/Gunsmith Cats[which is why I picked up this series] but the taiwan episode where Kirika just wastes a number of hitmen just 10 ft or less without them getting a shot was the last deal-breaker for me.

The coloring style was Saturday morning style which I could did not stand MATCH the dark elements of the story. I disagree that that the animation was top-notch[top-notch is ghost in shell].

Chloe, another true noir, was dressed like a low-rent NEO/goth reject which I found completely not believable at all.

Another weakness is why the need for super-assassins by the soldats. This theme also subtly another mark against men & pro-feminist tint in the series. If you had read any Robert Ludlum novels, there is a rationale explations why organizations need super-assasins ie take over the world etc.

I grant you that the theme of being a super-assassin mentally is really the heart of the story arc behind NOIR but they do not show how they physically become super-assassins to be a truly outstanding anime consider they have the luxury to produce 26 episodes.

SO you are a gunsmith cats/elecktra assassin fan, do you think NOIR will give you a fix of plausible super-hero women. NOIR is more fantasy for girls under 17.

      4 out of 5 stars A promising start........2005-02-04

Summary: an asassin for hire Mirielle Bouquet recieves an email from a sullen japanese girl with amnesia. The girls pasts are tied together and so they form an alliance to unravell the mysteries of their pasts. The animation is gorgeous, the japanese voice acting is great, the amercan dubbing isn't so great. Overall a slow but interesting begining. EP

When Gabriel (Rakie Ayola) sets out from her native Granada for a new life in England aboard a cruise ship, she has no idea of the intrigues (and love) in store for her. It begins when she must share her cabin with a mysterious man named Duncan Stewart (Jonathan Pryce), who is recognized by Rex Goodyear (John Hurt) as the man who murdered his wife and stole from him a priceless painting, the only two things he's ever loved. What follows is a cloak-and-dagger style conceit that fails to engage the viewer to the extent that it seems to try. The problem is that one can't figure out whether one's watching a romantic comedy or an uplifting drama. Of course a film can be both, but the shortcoming here is that it's neither: it's not funny enough to be a comedy, and its attempts at being cute absolutely undermine its attempts at being uplifting drama. One place the film does succeed is with the island scenes that bookend the story--they are moving and impressive, even if they do seem part of a different film. Perhaps this film does have an audience, however: if you're a fan of television whodunits, there is a very good chance you'll love it. --James McGrath

      1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2006-09-04

Truly disappointing film. A good starting linestory, wasting good actors; I saw it on TV and the DVD has a different ending missing scenes while adding others that are irrelevant. A waste of time and money.

1 out of 5 stars Wow What a Bad Movie.......2006-03-09

The only good thing I can say about this movie is that it was colorful. The island scenes, the flamboyant shipboard sets...etc. However, the story is too stupid to be believed. I believe there is supposed to be some kind of mystery tucked in and amongst all the vapid and shallow subplots but you will find your mind wandering so often you will not be able to figure out what the mystery is.

Then there is some kind of philosophizing which goes on when the main character Gabriel Angel (I guess that name is supposed to have some kind of significance too but who knows what?) makes her speeches about what life is about but, again, it's almost impossible to figure out what the point of these speeches is either.

      Don't waste your time.

4 out of 5 stars Look for the forest beyond the trees........2000-02-28

I found this movie to be very uplifting. It isn't just about a girl learning to fly or about her romance on ship board, although those things are elements of the film. It is a message to everyone that in order to live and move forward in life one must let go of the past. One needs to let go of one's fears, and one needs to love regardless of social convention, race, orientation, etc. While the plot did have a lot of angles, it was tied up nicely by the end, and I felt overall it was a film worth watching.
