THE Shaolin Temple movie.......2007-06-27
Gordon Liu (also known as Lau Kar Fai) stars as a young man who's friends and family have been killed by the new government. He wakes up at the Shaolin Temple, a place he has only heard about a couple of times. When he realizes he is at the best place possible to learn kung fu, he begs and begs to learn so that he can revenge his family. He does finally get taught, but has to start with the basics. Every part of his body must become stronger before he can learn how to fight. After he finishes the first stages of training in record time, he is now highly respected and moves onto learning actual fighting styles. He breezes through this and becomes a great fighter in only 5 years or so. This is not one of those movies that has 1 or 2 training sequences. Gordon is shown in at least 13 of the chambers and half of the movie is spent at Shaolin. So after he has become a master fighter, he is given a high honor and told that he can become second in charge of any of the 35 chambers. A senior monk played by the great Lee Hoi San objects to this and says that he can't have this honor unless Gordon defeats him in a weapons duel. Lee Hoi San does not play a villain, but he does not think that Gordon is a good enough fighter to receive so much praise. His plan works better than he could have ever imagined. He ends up helping Gordon improve as a fighter and as a person. Gordon is told he can leave Shaolin now, and he goes to take revenge on the evil General who killed his family.
One thing that sets this movie apart is that it tries to be a real movie, and it succeeds. Watching Gordon grow up into a man is remarkable to see. The commentators didn't notice, but a lot of the stuff in this movie is very real. When Gordon has to use the pole with the wieght on the end to hit the bell over and over again, that is a real weight on the end of the pole! Gordon talks in the interview (included on this disc) about how the sabres that Lo Lieh uses in the final fight are real, and it just makes the movie that much better. Dont expect your average tale of revenge. I was touched deeply when I first saw this and there are not many kung fu movies that have as much meaning and feeling.
Rating- 5/5
Picture quality is remastered very well. It does get a bit darker and lighter in some scenes, but other than slight print damage once or twice, the picture quality is perfect. The Mandarin, Cantonese and English tracks all sound excellent. In fact, I have never heard the English dub sound this good. The subtitles should have been written better, and the English dub is actually a better translation. They are not horribly written, but could have been a lot better. I am not complaining though since this is the only fault on the DVD.
Special features include a great commentary from The RZA and this Andy Klein guy who does not know very much about the genre. Luckily RZA is there to help him point out actors like Lau Kar Wing, Wilson Tong and Hsiao Hou. I found the commmentary enjoyable. RZA talks about his experiences with this movie, and he is definitely a 36th Chamber expert. And I found it pretty funny that he seems to think Gordon Liu is a monk in real life.
The 17 minute interview with Gordon Liu is very interesting. He talks about many things such as training day and night and how great of an honor it was to work with a megastar like Lo Lieh. Gordon skips over the years like people should know what he is talking about, but just in case you don't, I will fill you in. In 1974 Lau Kar Leung was Chang Cheh's top action director and Gordon Liu was cast as a villain alongside Johnny Wang Lung Wei and Leung Kar Yan in movies like '7 Man Army'. When Lau Kar Leung split up with Chang Cheh he started directing his own movies for the Shaw Brothers, starting with 'Spiritual Boxer'. In his next movie 'Challenge of the Masters', Lau Kar Leung cast his younger adopted brother Gordon Liu as the lead. This is what led to Gordon becoming the star of 'The 36th Chamber of Shaolin', the greatest Shaolin Temple movie ever made.
There is a 17 minute documentary on Shaolin that is basically another 17 minutes of awesome info from Gordon Liu.
The 8 minute interview with film critic/scholars Andy Klein and David Shute is a very good description of how great of a movie this is.
The RZA gets a 10 minute interview where he talks about where he first started watching these movies and also gives his thoughts on the Shaw Brothers and explains why the Master Killer in his rap group took that name.
The trailers are the best special feature. The trailer for 'Shaolin Mantis' is very unique. Instead of showing clips from the movie, the actors introduce what kind of kung fu styles are going to be used (be sure to look for Lily Li!). Lau Kar Leung is the director of 'Shaolin Mantis' and doesn't even have a role in the movie, but he gets to show off his ultra awesome kung fu skills quite a bit in the trailer. I think I have watched this trailer about 50 times, and I will eventually master that Shadow style!
Also included are ORIGINAL trailers for 'The 36th Chamber', 'Return to the 36th Chamber', 'Disciples of the 36th Chamber', '8 Diagram Pole Fighter', 'My Young Auntie', 'One Armed Swordsman', 'Infernal Affairs 3' and the original Master Killer US TV commercial.
The last special feature is a gallery of original movie posters and movie stills.
Gordon Liu Pre-Kill Bill 1+2.......2007-06-21
Here he is in his most important role EVER!!!! OK well that's a matter of opinion but it is in this movie that gordon Liu cements his position in the martial arts movie lexicon by totally nailing this role. He would go on to play a mon many times after this but this is the best of those movies, hands down. For years it's only been available in the dubbed version that many of us probalby saw many years ago. but this beautifully restored and fully remastered version should be a part of every martial arts fans movie collection.
AKA Master Killer.......2007-06-21
This is an excellent martial arts classic. It is a must see flick. Typical of martial arts films, there is a training period, and the training this young monk endures is quite interesting and entertaining (don't want to give anything away).
It is one of the few martial arts films I can watch over and over. There are some moderately humorous parts that keep things moving along (not as funny as Jackie Chan, but still some fun).
If you haven't seen this one, you should.
One of the best kung fu movies I've seen..........2007-06-19
What can I say about this movie that hasn't been said before? A classic. Yes. Influential? Absolutely. Entertaining? Most definitely. This movie is as good a place to start as any if you're interested in the Kung Fu cinema. And if you're already into Kung Fu, you've probably heard of this in the least, and I can't imagine why you haven't seen it. As to this release, really the best I've seen. The picture and sound are great, and the language option is nice. Most of the features are nice as well. Though I don't know how useful the Wu-tang clan video was. Still...a worthy DVD to a great movie.

Computer generated special effects have seldom been so giddy as in Shaolin Soccer, a gleeful fusion of kung fu and a classic Bad News Bears sports story. A former soccer star--whose "golden leg" was broken by a hired mob--assembles a team of former students of Shaolin martial arts, whose assorted skills (indicated by their nicknames, like Mighty Steel Leg and Iron Head) lend themselves to the swift interplay of the world's most popular game. Along the way, the team's leader (Hong Kong comic superstar Stephen Chow) meets a sticky bun baker (Vicki Zhao) whose kung fu is the equal of any of his teammates. Shaolin Soccer is supremely silly--in the final match, their opponents are called Team Evil--but that's part of the fun. American movies rarely achieve this perfect balance of the absurd and the sincere. A delight. --Bret Fetzer

Have an open mind.......2007-03-25
If you have seen Kung Fu Hustle you'll probably enjoy Shaolin Soccer. It shows a light-hearted approach to spreading the Kung-Fu gospel to different walks of life. Its fun to watch and just enough special effects give it an amusing edge.
ONe of the best films out there.......2007-02-13
If you want a movie that is hilarious, unusual, heartwarming and inspiring all at once, buy this movie. This is a great add to any movie collection. Stephen Chow always manages to entertain us with his amazing imagination, characters and storylines while inspiring people with his uplifting message. WAtch this film.
Shaolin Soccer..........2007-02-04
A fun movie! I actually liked it! The Special Effects were also good! If you can get it cheap, do so and have fun watching it! Three stars!
slightly disappointed.......2007-01-13
i bought this movie after being blown away by the actor/director's masterpiece, Kung Fu Hustle.
while it contains similar humor elements and near-anime-type action, it's really not worth the buy, and you would be better served by purchasing Kung Fu Hustle which is much funnier and overall a better production. i probably watch Kung Fu Hustle once every couple of months, which is no small complement.
This movie is ridiculously funny!.......2006-12-14
Stephen Chow did an amazing job of creating a story involving real characters in not so real, but agreeable situations. He has given each character a personality of its own; just to create comedy, with a humor that is sometimes honest and others rough. It has some great comedy moments although, coming from the characters, very peculiar ones.
It basically all comes from the characters. You have different persons, united by one thing: Shaolin Kung-Fu. And then you have one man, with one passion: Soccer. This premise helps to create human emotions in the characters. They all have a past that, for some reason, want to forget. Except one of them, who could be living in the past, and still thinks in the goodness of Shaolin Kung-Fu. He believes in it so much, that he gives speeches to people about the qualities of his culture, and the improvement it could do in society. He is right, and sooner or later, she will remind these things to some people, and they will all remember. They will all be prepared to get together again.
What a good-hearted film this is, and how it is filmed, it's beyond imagination. You will find special effects from other world. In occasions, these will seem slow for you, and you will think they are not well managed or handled; but then you will watch. Watching will make you connect all the elements of the story, to make it one. In elements I include special effects, and say again: they couldn't be done better, especially in a movie like this one.
The entire cast did a wonderful job in their roles by giving their characters the personal development they need. They are not playing the most complex people in the world, but they still know what characters they're playing. Some of the scenes, such as the first time we see Mui making bread, are absolute genius; so funny that you can't help but to laugh. I felt Mui seemed like she should have been in more of the film, and I've read that a lot of her part got cut out of the American release, which is a shame. A number of people are saying the original is vastly superior to the edited U.S. version, but this version is so great that I would be mightily impressed if that were true.
The idea of this movie is ingenious, using the style of extravagant martial arts films in a soccer movie, and is done beautifully. You will probably find something you've seen before, I can't deny that. You will find the ending you expect, the situations you imagine, the resolutions you anticipate, or not. You'll have the old coach, the person with the dreams and the heart, the girl; it's just that you'll have them differently (you'll realize what I mean). This is another type of cliché, a very different one, so different that I would say it is not a cliché at all.

A pure old-school martial arts movie, beloved by aficionados, that also appeals to nonfans simply as a rousing action film. The often-imitated fact-based plot (see The Karate Kid) centers upon the rigorous training process undergone in the mid-19th century by the anti-Manchu Chinese patriot San Te (Gordon Liu). It's depicted as a grueling voyage into the unknown. Cast out of his home village when he stands up to the cruel warlord (Lo Lieh) who slaughtered his parents, the refugee seeks out the martial monks of the Shaolin Temple, who steer him through a torturous series of "chambers"--horrendous ordeals designed to build strength and agility--before he's even allowed to study boxing or swordfighting. Finally he defeats a rival by inventing a brand-new weapon, the three-section chain-linked staff. But innovation can be carried only so far; when San Te suggests opening a "36th chamber" in the temple that would teach Shaolin techniques to the populace at large (so that they can fight the nasty Manchus) he is drummed out of the corps. Naturally he returns to his home village, slaughters the baddies, and prepares to open China's first public Shaolin-style kung fu school. Many of the pupils San Te recruits in the final reel became legendary martial artists in their own right, the "Fathers of the Church" of the Chinese kung fu tradition. This is strong action entertainment with real historical resonance. --David Chute

Still a classic.......2007-04-02
No matter how many years pass; still one of the best kung fu flicks ever made!
GORDON LIU=A LEGEND IS BORN.......2006-05-28
this movie no doubt is arguably the greatest of all-time you can consider it the martial arts version of the godfather because its mainly an initiation and training then the last 20+ minutes or so is where all the fun and action begins. this movie is approximately 1 hr 55 mins long. for the 1st 25 to 30 mins you see gordon liu with hair (which is pretty odd to see) and his friends in a school and the manchus taking over. you see lau kar wing trying to plot to kill the head manchu general but lo lieh anticipated it and they have a battle with their weapons which lau kar wing is killed at the hands of lo lieh. then later gordon liu and his friend try to escape to shaolin but unfortunately for his friend he dies. my faovrite chambers were the waterbucket chambers, reflex chamber, and the fighting chamber. best fight was gordon liu vs. great wing chun master lee hoi sang about 100 times. this movie also stars wong yu, norman tsui siu keung, wilson tong (who had a sizeable role), henry yu yung (who bares a resemblence to jason pai piao), and late great simon yuen siu tien. this movie is widescreen 2:35.1 and the sound you know about that i have to turn up 3 quarters of the way to hear it. but pick this up and find a better trasfer if you can.
This is the good Master Killer.......2006-05-18
I've been trying to get my hands on this movie for a long time. My teacher told me that he saw it 23 years ago and loved the training scenes. I didn't know which Master Killer it was though so I ended up buying "36 Chambers", "The Master Killer Trilogy", and "Return to 36 Chambers" before finally getting it right. IT WAS WORTH IT.
The quality is surprisingly good, Chia Hui Liu is at his best, and the storyline isn't the typical revenge story you've seen a thousand times (well not entirely anyway).
What I love about this movie is that it shows the protagonist overcoming real mental and physical obstacles along the martial way with great dedication and patience thus bettering himself and contributing to the art. Fantastic.
Must see for all martial arts lovers.......2006-04-10
Firstly, this is the "36th Chamber of Shaolin", now for the rest.
There is something noble about fighting with bare hands or with olden day weapons (like the sword, spear, bow and arrow etc.). It is that the actual human spirit is involved in their mastery (as opposed to children sporting a gun in a threatening way). The movie talks about this human endeavour, how discipline can take man to higher realms of self mastery.
Firstly it is clear that the mind is most important for martial arts (if you see the old man pushing the hero of the movie from many meters away). Secondly, the movie talks about bringing archaic knowledge to all sections of society for its enrichment, like starting a 36th Chamber.
I watched this movie in my school when I was in my 8th or 9th standard. There was an aura of greatness in the protagonist which I never forgot. I still see greatness in the movie, I would want to watch it many times. It reminds me that human endeavour and discipline would make us great men, nobility and faith would make us Shaolins, or Devas (gods) as my upringing would have me to believe.
classic '36th Chamber Of Shaolin'.......2006-03-28
amazing film, much less humor than your average kung fu flick. the film has brilliant scenes of physical strength when San Te is in training and excellent fight scenes towards the end. also much deeper story.
i definetly recomend this film (one of the best in the genre), but maybe not this version.
i myself got the vhs version, and from what i can tell from these reviews, its as good, if not better than the quality of this dvd.

Executioners need protection.......2007-02-09
Average movie with OK acting, and many questions that needed to be answered to make this a classic!
I bought this movie because some of the reviews said that it was very good, but they did not tell the true story. At first the son was made to look like a little girl, and immediately study his mother's technique. The movie never really answered why the father made that decision, which was a key to the movie. I did like the interaction between the father and son, because that showed how the son wanted to emulate and aspire to follow in his father's footsteps as a warrior. I thought some of the interaction between the father and wife was a little unnecessary, and had nothing to do with the movie. The romance portion was short-lived, because that was it!!
Many of these movies devalue women once they have kids. They may have been a good warrior, but once the kids come then she becomes nothing but a cook, laundry maiden, and house servant. To me that is sad, because the plot would have worked even more by showing the mother as a great fighter who helped her husband's kung fu by continually fighting him with a different technique to help him grow stronger. Instead she just stood by and kept telling the husband that "you are not ready to fight Pai-Ma, you must study more!" If your husband was going to fight somebody who killed your father or brother would you send him out unprepared? NO WAY !!!
Other than these problems, the movie developed very slowly, but was not a total waste, because the scenes with Pai-Ma were all pretty good. This is not a must have, but its definitely worth watching if you are a fan of Pai Ma.
Great Old School Actioner.......2006-06-14
For those waiting decades (literally) to get a remastered and widescreen version of this film and with the original English dubs, this is so far the one to get. One important thing though, is the Celestial Pictures remastered version, even though only with subtitles, the picture and audio quality is much better. You will notice the difference if you have both versions and watch them side by side. Another thing is the Chinese dub at least at one point came on. This was the scene when Hung See Kuan fights Pai Mei for the first time and grabs his groin. Pai Mei was supposed to say "Can't find it?" Instead it was spoken in Chinese. Another noticable thing is since it seems Red Sun was mixing the English dub when convenient, the syncing would be noticable off. For instance, in the last fight with Hung Wen Ding, the sound effects are a little late after the actual movements have occurred. This syncing problem also occurs in the Legendary Weapons of Kung Fu Red Sun release.
there is a reason you pay a couple dollars more for the red sun versions over groundzero.......2006-04-25
actually reasons, and big ones at that. It's not panned and scanned, it is presented in 16:9 format. Which I actually prefer over letterbox, if I had a big screen, I would probably take the letterbox, but this is to peoples advantage if you have around a 25 inch tv like me. Also another big plus is that unlike groundzero, you will be getting beautiful remastering job with no scratches, and I guarantee that. Now the sound is really the inly thing that they could have improved on. It only has 2-channel english language but the sound quality is still very good and won't fluxuate throughout the movie. The sound does change slightly but only because during the action, they just use original language track, but whenever they shift to speech, they have the john wayne sound-a-like AND COMPANY WHO DO ALL THE OLD SCHOOL AND NEW SCHOOL FOR THAT MATTER. So get ready for the same old voices, but again the sound shifts but is barely noticeable, I'm just a nitpicker. So overall it's worth the 3-5 dollars more.
Now the movie itself is absolutely wonderful. It has the great Chen Kuan Tai playing one of the last disciples after their shaolin temple was burned down. The movie starts with an introduction of how Pai Mei became a traitor and decided to help the ching's. It show's the head abbot of shaolin in a duel with pai mei and show his special kung fu internal style. Externally is shown just as well. I honestly can't think of a greater actor to play the traitor of the ming's. So in the next fight we get the greatest cameo of gordon liu's career. I had actually forgotten that this guy is a great actor until watching this and shaolin challenges ninja again. Now the action is made up of about 5 scenes. One after the other they get better and better but none surpassed the first 2 of the movie, the rest were just better because of the character development and the finale could not have been much better. Sure it could be bette in terms of speeds and superamn jumps but this is a hell of a lot more complex than your average kung fu tale. Now if I was only rating the fu it would only get like a 3.5, compared to say hitman in the hand of buddha would get a 3.5 or 4 btu is still only a 3 star movie. So after chen Kuan Tai escapes(thanks to gordon) he goes in hidnign and travels with the peking opera on the junks. Now I will certainly not leave out li-li-li, the hottest woman in cinema history. She meets kuan tai and marries him and they have a son who is played by wong yue. I am not familiar and didn't like him al that much, but he more than fit the bill for his fighting. So when the junks are ordered to be burned, chen and lily go in hiding and he studies for YEARS in the tiger claw style to try and beat pai mei, and he constanty refuses to implement her crane style. Even after he gets defeated by Pai Mei and is sent home a miserable loser he won't try her kung fu. But I guarantee you will see an ending that is sweet and overall great execution throughout the entire movie that will leave you with a smile on your face(especially if yu are a fan of li-li-li).
Also I didn't think that it deserved 5 stars I was stuck on a 4-4.5, but then the end came around.
Also sidenote from up at the top, this is uncut just like all red sun releases, so don't expect to see a scene cut-off and then reappear with lines on the screen and distortion because somebody finally decided to press the play button in a non-action scene.

Shaolin And Wu Tang versus the Ching or is it Shaolin versus Wu-Tang?.......2007-05-23
Great movie ! I absolutely enjoyed the martial arts, especially by Gordon Liu and Adam Cheng. The different styles were cool to watch of Gordon's Shaolin and Adam's Wu-Tang. The ending fight scence is very cool, but I wish there was more! I wanted to see an all-out battle, but I guess you can't always get what you want. And the final ending was, "what?".. Oh well!
The basic plot is that the local Ching overlord wants to learn both the Wu-Tang and Shaolin fighting styles. Both Masters veto him, and thus he hatches a plot with his servant to pit the Wu Tang against the Shaolin.
As has already been mentioned, the translation of the dialogue is horrendous! The english dubbing does not match up with the english text at the bottom of the movie. I was laughing at the various translations, that at times were so far off. Come on guys, get it right at least!
I was also disappointed about the lack of extras on the DVD. Throw on at least a couple of trailers or something.
5+ for the movie, 3 for the translating and extras !
WUTANG CLAN VS, MASTER KILLER.......2006-11-25
2 DIFFERENT SCHOOLS GO AT IT. WUTANG VS. SHAOLIN, TRAINING IS HOT. SWORD FIGHTING IS SUPERB. AND GORDAN LIU DESERVES THE BEST KUNG FU ACTION STAR, BESIDES THE VENOMS. PICK THIS UP KID! WUTANG CLAN AINT NUTTIN TO !@#% WIT. SEE YA FR. KUNG FU COLLECT.
one of the most beautifally choreographed movies ever. .......2006-07-09
It is also one of the worst movies ever as the story only pretends to be taken seriously. Other than Johnny Wang (lung fei), Idy Chan (I think that is the girl, she was awesome), gordon liu, and adam cheung, this movie was bad.
It starts with gordon (shaolin) and adam (wudang) wanting to show there style is the best. We think it is going to be all jolly but the the general (Johnny Wang) has plans to master both shaolin and wudang styles so he can be the top fighter there is. But when the masters refuse to teach him, he just wants to take out the top fighters and just move himself to teh top that way. Wow, a 3 year old could have seriously written the script.
But you are getting this movie for action and that is what you will get. The opening sequence is just dazzlign watching the line of monks almost seem like robots in their movements. The only way to acieve perfection like thit nowadays is through cgi and since this movie was costed nothing more than teh price of a Lexus, I don't think they were able to fake any of this. The costumes are also top notch and watch out for the wudang master, his quick trainng fight scenes are great, BUT EVERY FIGHT IN THIS MOVIE WAS MADE JUST FOR US WHO LIKE TO SEE THE MOST PERFECT MOVEMENTS. And when it is choreographed by MAster Lau Kar Leung, you will realize why it is so good.
So you are really getting the best and teh worst of Master Lau, but that should not put off fans of old school kung fu what so ever.
The xenon release of this is horrible, but they can mess it up as much as they want, I will still watch.
AWESOME..........2006-05-28
old school kung fu at its best. Gordon liu , and adam cheng take the lead roles as two freinds who fight each other beacuse of their schools. Im not sure if the great shaw director leang kar leang directed this completly or it was a joint effort with gordon liu. But it is the work of liu , and great it is. The action is fast and superb , and the plot is nice. Wu tangs rivalary with shaolin is fanned and they both fight each other. The downside is the subtitiles and maybe the volume /sound which is low .But i have the vengence video dvd version[im not sure if its the same quality as this]
But for old school fans this is nothing but greateness from shaw brothers team.
My 2 cents.......2006-03-03
i just wrote a long review then it disapeared so im p*ssed and ima keep this one short. basically the dialogue (dubbed) is classic (especially if ura wu-tang clan fan like me) and the action is simply amazing. in terms of choreography, the fights, the plot, and the script, this is the best kung fu movie i have ever seen. also id like to say people who dont like dubbed films have no sense of humor (kung fu films generally are light hearted and it adds a little extra humor).
Also the picture is grainy and the sound is mono, i dont give a sh*t about that, you can see whats going on well enough, and i actually think the old looking picture suits the movie.
In short if you are a fan of the wu-tang clan("the best rap group of all time"), or just kung-fu on its own then you will love this film(assuming youre good people).
watch this space cos ima write some more reviews bout kung-fu

Good Film....but dont buy Red Sun version.......2007-06-20
Red Sun only sells bootleg dvds that are of very poor quality. I made the mistake of buying the Red Sun version, and it is horrible. It is not digitally remastered, the audio would go out in several places, and it would freeze and skip...and would often freeze up my dvd player in the process. The reviewer "morgoth" works for Red Sun and just spams reviews saying how great Red Sun is. Do yourself a favor and dont buy this dvd...you can easily find a real version elsewhere. Do other people a favor and spread the word about Red Sun...and vote NOT HELPFUL on all morgoth's reviews.
This is a great film, and I encourage you to buy a non-bootleg copy.
A CLASSIC DISCOVERED!!!.......2007-03-15
I have been a fan and collector of old skool kung fu flix since I was a kid. I thought I had seen all the good ones untill I discovered this gem. The fight coreoraphy is terrific, and the definate high point of the film is Lo Lehi's preformance as "Pai Mei". As a matter of personal preferance, I prefer a more serious and bloody story. This flix was a bit light hearted in tone for me, but I laughed out loud when Gordon Liu attacks Lo Lehi while he's relaxing in the bathtub. Overall this film is an old skool classic. Worth every penny of what you pay for it.
One of the best period..........2007-03-12
If you have not seen this yet, it is an absolute must for any fan of the genre. White Lotus priest Pei Mei is at his best, and Gordon Liu does not disappoint in his role... I also recommend Executioner from Shaolin which is the prequal to this awesome film...
Great film, horrid DVD........2007-02-06
If you're looking for bootleg DVDs with bootleg "quality," here you go. Red Sun or whatever their name is, is a bootleg company that steals the image quality from Hong Kong DVDs and sells it as their own. They then put out crappy bootlegs like this here and have their stooges post how great they are so you buy their releases. The dvds are poor, have audio and image issues, and fall apart in a year or so. If that sounds "Great," "superior," etc. please feel free to buy this release. If not, get the actual releases from Hong Kong for cheaper prices and see something great.
WHIE LOTUS PREIST steals the show!!!.......2007-02-01
Watch this movie for THE WHITE LOTUS PRIEST PAI MEI. The White Lotus Preist is one of the coolest characters you'll ever see in any kung fu movie , period. Although I enjoyed this kung fu movie, I've seen Gordon Liu in better roles. The White Lotus Preist fights Gordon Liu several times and each time spares G.L.'s life. I was very angry, because at the end when Gordon Liu finally is able to beat the White Lotus Preist he kills him and doesn't spare his life.

Old Skool Kung Fu!!.......2006-07-13
This flick definately reflects Gordon Liu in a positive light since "The Master Killer". I thought his flick was a great old school story,,,very entertaining. This flick was directed by the great Leung Kar Yan, one of his best production,,no question. Definately a must see,,really great movie!!
a MUST HAVE for a fan of kung fu films.......2006-06-06
If you know kung fu films then you must know Gordon Liu, and this is one of my favorite movies of his. Gordon Liu is an awesome martial artist. In this film he demonstrate many martial arts techniques such a drunken boxing and other kung fu styles. In this movie Gordon Liu is forced to marry a Japanese woman who is skilled and proud of her Japenese fighting skills and customs. This couple eventually quarrells over whos style is better. The Japenese wife's masters come from Japan to teach Gordon Liu a lesson. A beautiful display of spear, sword, staff, Judo, karete, ninjitsu, and other fighting styles are displayed. The movie is english dubbed, and the option of clear subtitles is available. The movie is digitally restored so it is fairly clear when compared to other old school kung fu films. Simply, buy this movie if you enjoy good kung fu movies, a must have for all fans!!
master killer's best, and original language version, thank you red sun, thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thanky.......2006-04-28
I feel like every review starts out the same for me, but here I go.
If you have not heard of red sun and do not have an all-region dvd player, then red sun is the best company going for classic kung fu. If you look up red sun under the amazon search engine, you will see I have plenty of reviews for this distribitor, that's because I have bought most of these and have managed to find some of the best movies in the history of cinema. And the LETTERBOXED widesceening job is so perfect I would be ahppy if this was the only dvd I had, ever.
First off, you will be sure that this is not a shaw's movie right away by the music. It sounds like authentic japanese, and overall provides an awesome score. It is really nice to get away from that stock music. And with origianl language, this goes both ways. The japanese are well worth hearing their voices, and there are a lot of japanese.
The movie has an odd start, no fancy MA display for the credits. it goes right to the story. Gordon Liu's family have set up a marriage for him long ago. But he doesn't really like this. So his friend(who you will certainly recogzine if you have seen any fu) comes in and tells him that the japanese girl has arrived. He goes on to describe her top and her bottom. Gordon gets all excited and runs out to meet her. But she comes in and lives in gordon's family's house and has absolutely no respect. Now gordon doesn't handle this the best way and since he is obviouusly better at the MA's, he beats her at everything. So this leads her to keep on breaking things and starting fights with him, to the point that she just completely leaves and goes home to japan. But when gordon sends a letter saying how far superior chinese is to japanese martial arts, her masters get pretty mad.
So all the japanese masters come over to challenge gordon. He sees his wife and rejoices but then sees like 8 dudes and one of them is like a giant. Now the second half of this thing begins. I still can't decide if I like the first or second half better. It is truly one of the best in the genre first half, but then the second half rivals any fu movie ever and manages to top most of them. The woman playing gordon's wife plays it perfectly. The first battle is superb, japanese against chinese sword, and more importantly, 2 techniques against eachother. The second the director comes up with an excuse to show that he is also a true drunken master, not just the yuen's and jackie. He plays the same drunk as most, and gordon has to learn his technique. This happens in too short amount of time, but works for the movie. And norman chu as another one of gordon's friend is great. No martial arts from him though. The weapons scenes are wonderful as they always match up chi and jap weapons. There is a spear scene, a 3 section staff against a 2 section and a sword, sai's against knives, and a match against a monster of a man, which I still think gordon cheated no matter what way they explain it. And the final one is prbably the best, true ninja scene(movie wise at least). So simon yuen has a good appearence hear as gordon's teacher and he keeps figuring out ways to beat all the japanese master that have come to challenge him.
But the main drawing point this movie is the real japanese actors. I am sure they are not real actors, but they worked just fine. The guy with the sai's may have no been japanese. And the master of all these master doesn's appear japanese but he doesn't fight, so that's cool. And Kuratu gets the well deserving lead role among them.
SO THIS RED SUN VERSION HAS 2 LANGUAGE TRACKS!!!!!! LETTERBOXED, CRYSTAL CLEAR PICTURE!!!!!!!!!!! AND 5.1 BOOMING SOUND.
Now, what more could you ask for.

Very good resource........2007-04-20
This is an excellent video that covers the basics. Dr. Yang is an excellent instructor.
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE VERY WELL DONE AND WORTH EVERY DOLLAR I PAID!.......2006-03-20
This dvd is loaded with information. I suspect I will be learning, refering to and benefitting from its contents for years to come.Dr Yang appears as a very learned Sifu and as I have recently begun the practice of Kung Fu at a school in Michigan (TCMA/ Berkley) this was bought as a tool to use at home. I am totally pleased and am glad I own this. Thanks to Sifu Yang for taking the time to do what he does which is pass on valuable and rare kung fu knowledge. I do feel that a beginner buying this DVD would be able to increase his/her awareness and make progress in kung fu even if there was not a school to attend though it is reccommended. I am looking forward to it all.
Wow! If this is the 'basic training'.........2005-12-06
Kung Fu means 'Time / Energy'. Literally, something which takes time and energy to achieve.
In this video, Dr. Yang teaches the necessary body conditioning for Shaolin Kung Fu, starting with stretching for the entire body, both standing and sitting. Some of it is very intense, difficult stuff which needs to be patiently trained for 6 months.
During the fundamental stances Master Yang explains some of the applications, and really corrects the posture of his students demonstrating. He teaches with a great sense of humor, with a very humble manner, but offers so much information for each technique.
The Punches are shown in a classroom situation, with corrections and applications, and are also shown by students hitting a heavy bag. There is a great variety of techniques, which give an excellent foundation for further study.
Very fun and serious video!
Thank you Master Yang for keeping the classical martial arts of Shaolin Temple alive and well. This fundamental training is rigorous and gives a lot of insight into other, more 'modern' styles. Very practical, powerful techniques.

Appalling.......2006-12-08
I waited to receive this copy from the US,and when I checked it out it was very bad quality.Thick of the worst video you have, and I think you can understand.I certainly won't be buying anything off this studio again.I do recommend dvds from Red Sun,Hong Kong Legends and Vengeance Video are ok.
The film is a masterpiece of classic kung fu,but the quality is dire.I hope Red Sun release it.
I WILL GO AHEAD AND REVIEW THIS DVD IN DETAIL, THE ONE THAT SAYS 36TH CHAMBER BUT IS REALLY THE RETURN).......2006-03-14
So, the only way that I can suggest to get this movie, is as long as you don't spend more than ten dollars, it's a good buy.
THIS IS NOT THE 36TH CHAMBER BUT RATHER THE RETURN TO THE 36TH CHAMBER.
Now that I have that clear I wanted to agree with past reviews that the picture quality is pretty bad, but this dvd was the first time I saw movie and it instantly became my favorite movie ever(at least favorite final fight scene)
And the dvd is not lying in saying it is the full uncut version.
Now if you really like this movie like me I would refer you to look for the red sun version. It has the SB logo on it and it says it is part of the shaolin collection. Also it is called return of the master killer. This dvd has absolutely crystal clear picture, dual languages, and subs, though the subs are missing a few lines that were not translated.
So if you can find this version cheap, then get it, but for a couple more bucks you can get the ultimate version that I have, WHICH IS EITHER ALL REGION OR REGION1, I don't have it in front of me.
So
should have read the reviews before buying.......2005-11-30
Just received the DVD and watched the opening scenes. That was enough for me. First off, I blame myself for thinking the "36th Chamber" was the original classic "Master Killer." Simply put, the video quality is totally unacceptable. Its the same or worse than recording at the slowest speed on a VCR.
poor copy.......2005-08-03
I have two reviews for this movie. the first is the film itself and the second is on the actually copy.
This movie is a great Kung fu classic. The title I am more familiar with is "Return to the 36th chamber" aka "Return of the Master Killer"
36 chambers usually refers to the first one. Aka "the master killer of Shaolin. or just "master killer"
That being said I do really like this movie and feel that everyone should own it... just not this copy.
Now for the copy being sold here...
the image is so poor it is difficult to watch. it is very grainy the color is off and the cropping is horrible.
My recomedation for anyone really into classic kung fu movies is to pick up a region free player and buy the Hong Kong remastered versions by Celestial released by Intercontinental Video Limited
or Deltamac
Defective, may be Pirated and misleading Title.......2005-06-05
First of all the DVD inside is not the famous "36th Chamber of Shaolin". It is "Return to the 36th Chamber", sequel to the original movie.
The Video quality is so poor that I think it is a pirated copy.
I cannot believe Amazon can sell such item.
