Although it's not as bold as Oscar darling Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera continues the resuscitation of the movie musical with a faithful adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster stage musical. Emmy Rossum glows in a breakout role as opera ingénue Christine Daae, and if phantom Gerard Butler isn't Rossum's match vocally, he does convey menace and sensuality in such numbers as "The Music of the Night." The most experienced musical theater veteran in the cast, romantic lead Patrick Wilson, sings sweetly but seems wooden. The biggest name in the cast, Minnie Driver, hams it up as diva Carlotta, and she's the only principal whose voice was dubbed (though she does sing the closing-credit number, "Learn to Be Lonely," which is also the only new song).

Director Joel Schumacher, no stranger to visual spectacle, seems to have found a good match in Lloyd Webber's larger-than-life vision of Gaston LeRoux's Gothic horror-romance. His weakness is cuing too many audience-reaction shots and showing too much of the lurking Phantom, but when he calms down and lets Rossum sings "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" alone in a silent graveyard, it's exquisite.

Those who consider the stage musical shallow and overblown probably won't have their minds changed by the movie, and devotees will forever rue that the movie took the better part of two decades to develop, which prevented the casting of original principals Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Still, The Phantom of the Opera is a welcome exception to the long line of ill-conceived Broadway-to-movie travesties.

DVD Features
The special edition of The Phantom of the Opera has two major extras. "Behind the Mask: The Story of The Phantom of the Opera" is an hourlong documentary tracing the genesis of the stage show, with interviews of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, director Harold Prince, producer Cameron Macintosh, lyricists Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart, choreographer Gillian Lynne, and others. Conspicuously absent are stars Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. Both do appear in video clips, including Brightman performing with Colm Wilkinson at an early workshop, and Crawford is the subject of a casting segment. Other brief scenes from the show are represented by a 2001 production. The other major feature is the 45-minute making-of focusing on the movie, including casting and the selection of director Joel Schumacher Both are well-done productions by Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group.

The deleted scene is a new song written by Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart, "No One Would Listen," sung by the Phantom toward the end of the movie. It's a beautiful song that, along with Madame Giry's story, makes him a more sympathetic character. But because that bit of backstory already slowed down the ending, it was probably a good move to cut the song. --David Horiuchi

This set is amazing! The only thing I wish that was different is that you could get all the non song parts too. Other than that, the songs are wonderful, the music is amazing, and I've learned all the words!

Visually stunning but could have been much better.......2007-06-30

Although I have never seen the stage production, I do own a soundtrack of the original cast. I must say this pales in comparison. The two largest problems with this is that Emmy Rossum can sing but not act and Gerard Butler can act but not sing. Hardly a recipe for something wonderful. Rossum goes through the movie with two expressions, open-mouthed horror and open-mouthed awe. Butler, while he can keep pitch, does nothing close to justice to the incredible songs he has to sing. The actor of Raoul was fairly disappointing as well, not being what one would imagine a young dashing hero to be. The scene of him arriving on a white horse was especially cliched. It didn't help that the fight that follows was pretty unexciting.
That being said, it is a gorgeous looking movie. The sets and costumes are incredible and actually seeing what is happening does clarify some things on the soundtrack. I was let down by the masquerade ball however. Having everyone in black and white didn't make any sense, especially in contrast to the lyric's description of the ball itself. The Phantom in red could still have been stunning without the rest of the costumes being so drab.
All in all I was disappointed. They certainly could have picked better actors/singers to play the leads.

Captivating movie.......2007-06-28

Talk about total obsession, I bought this a year ago and held on to it until I saw the play the other nite, I have to say this is a well made movie, Gerard Butler as the Phantom was absolutely the man for the movie, I cant imagine anybody else playing his part, I saw the clips from the original with Sarah and there's no comparison, Gerard was so powerful as an actor, the way he portrayed the part especially when he was trying to seduce Emmy,sooooooooo sexy, anyway, I give this movie a 5 star.

PROS: For those of you that love the play, this is a great way to enjoy it from home. Emmy Rossum provides a great performance as a very credible Christine Daae.

CONS: It's hard to believe that there was no one better than Gerard Butler to play the Phantom. He just can't sing to save his life. Raoul is also very regrettable.

I borrowed a copy "The Phantom of the Opera" (Widescreen Edition)May 3, 2005, 141 minutes Disc-One Set from a Friend and just finished viewing the DVD Tonight!!!! You will want to get the Special Edition, May 3, 2005, Two-Disc Set if you want to view the Special Features which includes Two Major Extras. "Behind the Mask: The Story of The Phantom of the Opera" is an hourlong documentary along with the other Major Extra a 45-minute Making-of the Movie along with some minor extras. I prefer the Special Edition Two-Disc Set over the One-Disc Set where the Special Features are omitted but has only the Theatrical Trailer!!

This 2005 Movie Directed by Joel Schumacher is simply a "Grand Opera Movie" worthy of a 5 Star Rating!!! So, Turn up the DVD Volume and Enjoy!!

If you appreciate the World of Arts and Music you will not be disappointed with Andrew Lloyd Webber's Score!!

Best Romantic Comedy of All Time.......2007-03-18

This 15th Anniversary edition has some deleted scenes inserted into the movie that has had some "purists" howling, but for me, I think it adds a new dimension to the relationship between Edward and Vivian. Aside from that the commentary from Garry Marshall was fun (of course, hearing from Julia Roberts and Richard Gere would have been great, but whatever). The wrap party is a joke; they shouldn't have bothered inserting that. The "Pretty Woman Tour" which takes you to the actual places where the movie was filmed was also informative. But all that aside, it's about the movie and it is a movie that still seems fresh and original all these years later. It's well worth owning because this a is a movie that will surely get more than one viewing.

The film is about a wealthy businessman, (Richard Gere), who inadvertently meets a prostitute, (Julia Roberts).
He hires her not just for the night but as a companion for an entire week!

Typically, it's fantastically 'Chik Flik' because of the love story between the lead couple, within the film. And yes, it obviously has a smushy romantic ending that makes every girl's heart melt :)
But I found that this film isn't your average light-hearted Rom-Com, purely because, when dealing with the subject of a prostitute, it would be hard to make it all sunshine and smiles...

I liked the fact that I found this film 'intelligent'. They look at some of the prejudices that Julia Roberts' young character would encounter.
(Please note this was also picked up on in my school and clips of the film were shown to us while we were studying prejudice and discrimination!)

As expected from such seasoned and successful actors, both lead characters are convincing and extremely likeable in their roles. Support actors are also well-played.

I have just one final comment and that is, my boyfriend is generally not a fan of the 'Chik Flik' genre- didn't like Dirty Dancing and Love Actually didn't rock his world- but he has commented on several occasions on how much he enjoyed watching this...
And that just says it all!!

While visiting Los Angeles for a week, Edward Lewis borrows his friend's car and gets lost on Hollywood Boulevard... He asks a hooker for directions... She proposes to help him for 5 dollars... For $20, she accepted to show him where the stars live...

Edward invites her to join him in his hotel suite, but not for sex...

Enjoying her company, he offers her to be his 'date' for a series of business activities including a strategic dinner and a pool match... Out of the 'bargain,' she gets $3,000 cash, a classier wardrobe and a visit to the opera...

All the characters of the film are convincing, original and sympathetic, feeling comfortable with each other... Director Gary Marshall did a great job...

Ideal for the role is Richard Gere... He plays Edward Lewis, the terrific rescuer who 'free' Vivian from the streets conducting her to his penthouse suite... He is handsome, charming and shy... 'Henry Higgins' at his best... But Edward is a millionaire... He buys companies that are in financial difficulty... He takes them apart and sells the pieces for more than he paid for the whole... "It's strictly business", he tells Vivian... "You and I are both such similar people. We both screw people for money."

Edward's only defect is that he hurts what he loves... He wins a certain imaginative power by how painful that treason is...

Julia Roberts plays Vivian Ward, an attractive and smart hooker with a heart of gold... She gives her character a great sense of humor, charming Edward with her honesty... She is intensely appealing and amusing, making women feel comfortable...

Into the snobbish clothing store, she delivers a great exit line, just devastating the saleswomen... he song is terrific as the scene... In the hotel lobby, she walks in a 'killer' red dress... She learns which fork to use in the formal dinner meeting, projecting an escargot through the air... At the opera she innocently asks: "Where's the band?"

There's more than a touch of Eliza Dolittle in her role, specially when she decides she wants more from Edward than money... She gets the perfect rescue scene with a limousine, a fire escape, a balcony, birds, music and red flowers...

Hector Elizondo turns a supporting role into more than that... He plays the formal, intolerant hotel manager... He takes an affection to his best customer's "niece" and trains her on which fork to use at a fancy dinner... His amusing performance as Edward's smooth competent hotel manager nearly shapes Roberts and Gere...

Ralph Bellamy is very good as the aging millionaire, creator of a small company Edward is trying to take to pieces...

Laura San Giacomo plays Vivian's pal roommate, her first role since she played the amorous sister in "sex, lies & videotape."

"Pretty Woman" is a contemporary Hollywood fairy tale, a sweet romantic comedy, an innocent 'love story' in the middle of self-interest and agreement... It remains as an entertaining motion picture that had women calling out the delights of true love...

I got this version of the DVD because the original version is so much more expensive. The special features/scenes are nothing to be excited about.

Other people who reviewed this product were being ridiculous when they were trying to put this movie down because Julia Roberts plays a hooker? It's called a movie role! And after all, it all turns out for the best in the end. Whatever happened to just reviewing the actual product?

Wilder makes this movie worth it........2007-06-27

Don't let the star rating fool you. Despite this movie having an absurd plot, largely unlikable characters, particularly Charlie's family, and repetitive singing from the loompas, this is a fantastic movie. But wilder and the boy who plays charlie are the ones who really makes this movie a classic. ill leave the explanation of whats in this movie to the editors and other reviewers.

the reason for the 1 star deduction is because of the transfer quality. some scenes are quite bad. such as the sketchiness of when charlie runs home after finding the golden ticket. since its been ages since i've last seen this movie i have no idea if anything was removed.

Overall, this is a good buy. They're are interviews with cast and directors included on this too which makes even more valuable.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is an awesome movie. I used to watch this over and over again as a child. My favorite character is Veruca Salt (Julie Dawn Cole) because she was so mean and spoiled. I loved how Veruca always seemed to get her way, it was so funny. This is a great movie that your entire family will surely enjoy time and time again.

I don't know what it is, but when you see the opening scene of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, you will instantly be hooked.

So what's to like about this movie? Pretty much everything! If you're a kid, you'll love the candy scenes (yum!) and the weird and funny "tour" scenes. If you're an adult, you'll appreciate the "moral of the story" and the little inside jokes here and there.

And what's NOT to like about this movie? Not much. I find myself fast forwarding through the "Cheer up Charlie" song simply because it seems to last forever but that's not enough reason to lower my rating. Also, if you're a parent and are picky about what your kids watch, the end of the movie (where the poor kid gets everything he wants) may or may not be a not so good lesson to teach to your kids.

My verdict: 5/5 stars. I can't see why anyone would NOT like this movie. I can watch it three times a week and still be enthralled each time. This is a must have movie in every household's movie collection!

This is a movie for the generations. My two year old niece is as fascinated as I was when I first saw the movie. She and I sing along everytime we watch the movie together. I love this movie for its strong moral content, as well as the world of fantasy it evokes. No big budget movie today can touch it. Get it for a child, and get one for yourself.

I have loved this movie ever since I can remember watching movies. I was just so fascinated with everything in it. I watch it all the time. If you've never watched it, make sure you do. It will always be at the top of my list.

Not epic classics but ............2007-05-07

In a word the Charlie Chan series of movies are FUN. The Warner Oland movies are a cut above the others. The often used (and often made up)Chinese proverbs quoted by Charlie provide a lot of humor. Even more humor is evident after Keye Luke was added. I found it interesting that several of the movies managed to work in some of the cutting edge technology of the day. i.e. The photocell timing at the race track, the FAX-like transmission of pictures. It is easy to see why the series was so popular in their day and remain so.

Warner Oland's Charlie Chan with Great Special Features.......2007-05-06

Earl Derr Bigger's Charlie Chan was finally successfully brought to the screen by Warner Oland. This box set has Oland's 5th - 8th appearances as the detective. This set could be called Charlie Chan's world tour as he visits London, Paris, Cairo and Shanghai.

Like all detective serial movies, the plots are all different but they are all the same. Its just that Charlie has a classy way of doing things. He always does things with intelligence and style. Whether solving a case at an English country house, finding who has been forging bank bonds in Paris, who has been stealing the treasure from the tomb in Egypt or the murderer in Shanghai, Charlie / Warner always got his man.

But what makes this set special is are the special features. Three of the movies have featurettes about the origins of Charlie Chan and each is very interesting and gives great insight into the character.

The forth has a spanish language version of Charlie Chan Carries On. In the 30's the studios would make duplicate versions of movies for the foriegn markets, usually South America. These were made using the same sets as the English versions but with a Spanish cast. In this film they use a photo of Charlie's family but Oland is in the picture not the Spanish actor! (If you get Garbo's Anna Christie, it has the German version with Garbo but the rest of the cast replaced by German actors.)

These special features make this set better than just the films alone. Thanks for the extra content!!

Charlie's back!.......2007-04-09

I've always loved the old 30's, 40's & 50's mysteries especially Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto and Sherlock Holmes. This set starts Warner Oland which in my opinion is the better Charlie between himself and Sidney Toler. To my knowledge, Oland made eight films and Toler made six. Set #1 includes CC in London, CC in Paris, CC in Egypt and CC in Shanghai. Each film has been beautifully restored and have never appeared any better. It's as if they were filmed yesterday. A must see! I own set #2 and Chantology starring Sidney Toler and featuring his six Chan films. I loved them all.

Dmytryk's stunning production remains one of our best war films, and courtroom dramas. A trio of outstanding performances distinguish it: an Oscar-nominated Bogart in one of his best turns as the embattled Queeg; Jose Ferrer, who almost steals the picture as whip-smart defense lawyer Barney Greenwald; and finally, Fred MacMurray, superb in the unsympathetic part of the cowardly Lieutenant Keefer. All hands on deck for this smart, salty classic.

Superb psychological drama set during WWII.......2007-06-15

"The Caine Mutiny" is a superb filmisation of the 1951 Pullitzer Prize-winning novel by Herman Wouk.

The clearly paranoid Caption Queeg (Humphrey Bogart) takes command of the minesweeper "Caine" and subjects his crew to his peculiar idiosyncracies. During a typhoon, however, Queeg cracks and is relieved of command by his Executive Officer Lieutenant Maryk (Van Johnson) who then goes on trial for mutiny.

Bogart is superb in the role of unstable Captain Queeg but Van Johnson is also excellent as the troubled Maryk - so too is Jose Ferrer as Maryk's cynical defence counsel. Fred MacMurray is in top form as the spineless Lieutenant Kiefer who eggs Maryk on, but doesn't follow through. There is a silly romantic subplot between Ensign Willie Keith (Robert Francis) and May Wynn as ... May Wynn (she took her screen name from this character) but this does not detract too much from the film.

The typhoon sequence is absolutely riveting, brilliantly realised by director Edward Dymytrk.

A richly rewarding psychological drama.

A True Masterpiece!.......2007-06-06

This the film to which "Crimson Tide" owes much as both have to do with a commanding officer having serious issues with his subordinate leading officer to the point where the CO is releaved of his command at the height of calamity on the ship.

This film enjoys that rarity in films wherein even the minor characters are well-drawn out and the major ones are as complex as they can get, especially in a military film. Humphrey Bogart may not have won his Oscar for this film (he did for African Queen), but this is perhaps his best and certainly most remembered role as the shell-shocked burned-out Captain of a busted-down ill-disciplined minesweeping vessel at the height of the war and a hurricane. Watching Bogart's Captain Queeg slow breakdown and his begging to his officers for help at one point is heart-wrenching. This is a surprisingly touching and emotional film.

The entire supporting cast is brilliant as well including Van Johnson who was never one of my favorite actors from this era, but performs here flawlessly as the second in command who eventually releaves his Captain by force. In addition, there are fine performances by Fred McMurray as the comic relief but also the sinister and arrogant instigator on the ship whose devious and self-centered motives push the story to it's inevitable and tragic conclusion, and Jose Ferrar is wonderful as the defense attorney for Van Johnson's character and he plays his role with bitingly sarcastic wit while he eventually learns to believe in his client in spite of his reservation. Ferrar's character even states that he would rather prosecute these "mutineers" than defend them as they had abandon Queeg when he needed help the most. Even E.G. Marshall's bit part as the prosecutor shows depth of character in the subtly ways in which he views Queeg on the stand during his breakdown.

The trial sequence near the end of the film is riveting and spawned it's own play later on Broadway. Watching Bogart's Queeg go from authoritative, confident, even arrogant, Captain to an emotional mess on the stand is awesome. The only other military trial scene that even comes close is Jack Nicholson's breakdown on the stand in A Few Good Men.

This film is nothing less than a masterpiece.

Improved picture and sound - easy to recommend.......2007-05-11

It's a tradition for television stations to show a selection of war movies over the Memorial Day holiday and it is fast becoming a tradition for the studios to release a slew of war themed DVDs to celebrate the contribution of the nation's veterans in time for the last Monday in May.
Special mention this year goes to Columbia who are releasing collector's editions of two classics that had already been afforded a release on those shiny silver discs.
First up is "The Caine Mutiny" which was first released on DVD back in late 1998. That bare bones version was widely panned for its poor transfer, which featured an overabundance of digital noise and was presented in basic stereo.
Those failings have been corrected for this most recent digitally remastered release. Here we are presented with a quite exceptional picture and soundtrack and a nice smattering of special features.
Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Herman Wouk the film (which itself was nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1954) details the tension between the captain of a World War II era minesweeper (played superbly by Humphrey Bogart) and his crew. Bogart's character is overly paranoid and viewed by some as displaying cowardice in the face of battle.
Playing the part of the executive officer, Lt. Steve Maryk is Van Johnson who, spurred on by third in command, the spineless Lt. Keefer (Fred MacMurray), finally takes control of the ship when the safety of the ship and crew are threatened. Queeg's stubborn insistences to maintain the heading of the ship in a typhoon, flying in the face of good seamanship, forces Maryk to take action and he, along with Ensign Keith, are charged with mutiny upon return to port.
It is here that the movie truly shines. Reluctantly defending the two is the always-excellent Jose Ferrer, and the scene where he interrogates Queeg on the stand is spellbinding.
Complimenting the movie Columbia have added an interesting scene specific audio commentary by Program Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center Richard Pena and filmmaker and producer Ken Bowser. The two detail the difficulties the filmmakers initially faced when confronted with an initially uncooperative Department of he Navy, careers of the actors involved and the context of the film in relation to a political environment that saw Hollywood filmmakers blacklisted.
Apparently the Navy has never had a mutiny onboard one of its ships (a fact which leads to the placement of a disclaimer to the beginning of the picture) and they were none too pleased with the fictitious account. However, following a change in command, they reversed their decision and offered the use of dockyards, ships, aircraft carrier and even real sailors for the movie.
Both Pena and Bowser return for the two-part documentary on the making of the movie. Running for 18:48 and 16:16 respectively they are joined by Film Critic Bob Castle.
The three begin by discussing the mood in Hollywood at the time. Apparently movie audiences declined rapidly from 1946 to 1962 with the advent of television and greater foreign competition and so a nervous industry was looking for a "sure bet." Producer Stanley Kramer had bought the film rights to "The Caine Mutiny" book before it became a bestseller for $60,000. The book was a major selling point that led to the producers being able to cast the movie with a strong ensemble. Castle mentions some of the un-credited roles to illustrate this and Bogart reportedly read the book and actively campaigned for the role of the captain.
Rounding out the special features are trailers for "Walking Tall: The Payback," "Hard Luck" and "Edison Force." None bear any thematic connection with the main feature.

Important ethical questions with a solid cast........2007-05-05

This Collector's Edition is worth getting for the extras alone. They have a useful discussion about the increasing challenge of TV to Classical Hollywood in the early 50s a reference to Elia Kazan,"On the Waterfront" (1954) a HUAC "friendly witness" and Edward Dmytryk, the only one of the Hollywood Ten to turn around and name names. ~ Australians here may remember the (destroyer) Voyager Incident of 1964 ~ was she cut in half by the carrier Melbourne. Inquest witnesses frequently referred to quote: "a Caine Mutiny situation" aboard Voyager.

Anyway, The Caine Mutiny was made at the tail end of the "movie star era", so there's a danger of being dazzled by the "Boggie aura" and not being objective about the actions of the troubled Capt.Queeg, or even noticing the good job Bogart does in the role.

Fred McMurray too, has a powerful screen presence and he plays the devious Lt. Tom Keefer with a darkness not seen since his Walter Neff in "Double Indenity;" a complete contrast to his fatherly, "My Three Sons" personae. Yet McMurray's "star appeal" can also obscure his "thinking preformance" - he clearly lets you read every "shifty" thought on Keefer's face. Keefer only verbalises his true colors (no pun) when he "'fesses up" to a "yellow streak 10 miles wide," after Maryk corners him into seeing Admiral Halsey about Queeg.

There is an interesting association with cowardice and the color yellow here; we have Queeg, throwing the yellow dye marker in panic and running from duty and Keefer's calculating, "too smart to be brave" yellow as he runs from responsibility - who then, is the true coward and why?

Van Johnson is on "safe" ground; Lt. Steve Maryk, is an extension of his own affable, fair minded self, a qualilty that prevents him from understanding that Keefer's duplicity and deflected hatred of the Navy will make him legally culpable of mutiny.

José Ferrer is a commanding screen presence at any time, and he makes Lt. Barney Greenwald seem to have been there for the entire picture. Ferrer plays his final scene with intimidating indignation - he has been drinking he says, to assuage "his guilty conscience" and we learn for the first time of his dilemma in defending Maryk.

Still you can put meditations on the complexities of human nature aside if you want and take "The Caine Mutiny" as pure wartime action, but you'd miss the little payoffs. It took me a long time, for example, to notice one small give-away detail; the dismissal of Comdr. DeVriess (Tom Tully) as a "slack" commanding officer by the rather affectless Robert Francis as Ens. Willis Seward Keith. The J.G.'s assessment seemed valid enough - until I noticed DeVriess timing Maryk's, perfomance on the paravanes with a stop-watch!

DeVriess had the maturity and experience to know how and when to get the best out of his command, but he will not push his "tired crew" and "beaten up tub, that ought to be melted down for razor blades," beyond their frayed limits. A "slack" commander, Willie? Sometimes you just have to trust the man at the helm to know what he's doing, even if you don't!

The moral complexity of the mutiny on the Caine is further complicated by Queeg's honesty and humility before his subordinate officers after the "yellow stain" incident. Their rejection of his plea for help raises questions about professionalism, loyalty and subordination to lawful authority ~ explosive issues that Greenwald carefully avoids in the court-martial, but ones with which he vociferously confronts Maryk at the "joyful celebration" ~ "You're an honest man, Steve. Tell me, do you think it would have necessary for you to have taken command if you'd given Queeg the loyalty and support he deserved?" ~ (powerful stuff.)

The Caine Mutiny is great war film: good to see it out on DVD. Also the commentary track and the extra features have a lot on interesting information on the problems in Hollywood with falling ticket sales and the reasons why war films were popular at the time.
THe two extras on the blacklist and especially about Edward Dmytryk, the only one of the Hollywood 10 who eventually "named names," were interesting as well as references to Elia Kazan and his use of Terry Malloy in "On the Waterfront" to justify his own testemony before HUAC.

Kevin Smith's best film..........2007-05-18

Chasing Amy, the third film in Kevin Smith's classic New Jersey trilogy (along with Clerks and Mallrats), just might be the best of the bunch. It packs Smith's usual envelope-pushing dialogue about sex, relationships, etc. and showcases some great comic performances. If you're feeling tired of boring Hollywood fare, Chasing Amy provides a refreshing slap in the face.

Ben Affleck (Good Will Hunting, Bounce) plays Holden McNeil, a comic book artist who's still looking for the right woman. While attending a comic-book convention with his roommate and Bluntman & Chronic co-creator Banky (Jason Lee, Almost Famous), he meets Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), and they quickly hit it off. Holden is convinced that he's met future girlfriend material. However, there is one minor problem: She's lesbian, a fact that's conveyed in a hilarious bar scene.

After he gets over his initial shock concerning her lesbian preferences, Holden enters into a fast frienship with Alyssa. Their close bond is a source of tension between Holden and Banky, who believes that she's bad news (and perhaps is a bit jealous). As Holden and Alyssa's relationship becomes more intimate, he must also come to grips with her wild past. Whether or not you buy into the film's surprising resolution, there's no denying that it's a ballsy one.

Smith's writing is so sharp that almost any actor (or non-actor) can come off looking good. That said, Jason Lee gives a classic comic performance, spouting off numerous un-PC lines, whether introducing a young toddler to his collection of porn magazines or asking Alyssa about her lesbian habits: "Since you like chicks, do you just look at yourself naked in the mirror all the time?" Affleck delivers solid work in a gutsy role. How much you like or hate Joey Lauren Adams will depend heavily on how you cope with her nasal, high-pitched voice.

Of course, a Kevin Smith film wouldn't be complete without the presence of Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith himself), and their scene is a keeper. While dining with Holden at a restaurant, the two offer relationship advice that's alternately poignant and hilarious.

With a writer/director as daring as Kevin Smith, odds are there will be some scenes in his films that you won't like. However, that's a small price to pay for the many hilarious scenes you do get, and it's also part of the reason that Chasing Amy rewards repeat viewings.

An almost mature film from Kevin Smith..........2007-04-04

This is Kevin Smith's best film. It isn't perfect, but it has a lot of real emotion in it, even though Smith nearly ruins it with his usual oversexed, Generation X schtick. I think the reason this film works well for the most part is that it's really quite sincere in its best moments. Kevin Smith was dating Joey Lauren Adams (the lead actress here) at the time, and had problems dealing with her past. So he made this film as a cathartic experience, and maybe that was good for him to do so (even though him and Joey broke up, so it kind of all was for naught...oops). Anyway, you really believe Ben Affleck falls in love with Joey here, and his scene where he declares his love feels very real and sincere (something Gen X types like Smith are NOT known for). But when Joey just gives up being a lesbian right away for Affleck, it doesn't really feel authentic. Her character was a bit of a whore when she was young, she found lesbianism, now Affleck brings her back to straightdom? It's not entirely believable, but Affleck (in probably his only decent performance before he became a celebrity) is rather believable in this scene. And in the scenes immediately following it, Joey's character seems to be really in love with Affleck. Unfortunately, Smith throws in too many over the top sexual references (the scene where Joey Adams and Jason Lee talk about oral sex injuries is ridiculous and just there to be "in your face"), and the scene where Ben Affleck proposes a menage a trois between Jason Lee and Joey is ridiculous. Affleck somehow gets the idea in his head that Jason Lee has been in love with him his whole life (despite Lee talking about his oral sex injuries with women earlier on), which is completely out of place with his character. Affleck proposes this in front of a TV playing "video aquarium" for some reason. But I really like the ending of this film. It's left totally open, and Smith should be commended for ending the film like that. The film is a bit of a mess, with some questionable character motivations, but it has its good moments, and it's Smith's best film in my opinion.

A must own DVD.......2007-03-16

This is one of my all time favorite movies; I have probably seen it over 10 times and I still don't get bored with it. Great dialouge and very believable and beautifully flawed characters. Joey Lauren Adams shines in this and it's the only movie I like Ben Affleck in. But be warned, this movie might break your heart.

It perfectly blends his potty mouth with sensitivity and good dialogue.This one and Jersey Girl is widely hated by the typical fans,but they're missing out.It's an unpopular formula that turns many away.You get the ones who like dick and fart jokes who don't appreciate the romance,and you get the other half who like the romance but hate the off-color jokes.For those of you with a taste for both,I reccomend this.

Chasing Amy is an intimate look at relationships and the uncompromising effect of regret. It is extremely rare to watch a comedy that will actually make you think.
This is by far Kevin Smith's most personal movie. It's low budget, the acting is bad (yes even by Ben Affleck), but it's still really enjoyable. Plus, the message is huge--follow your heart and ignore the distractions.
Holden(Affleck)is a comic book artist who falls in love with Alyssa(Adams), a woman who might have a questionable past. Then some rumors surface and her past endeavors start to become quite intrusive to him. Holden's insecurities boil over and puts their happy relationship in deep jeopardy.
This movie is hilarious, touching, and thought-provoking. A one-of-a-kind film.
