As in all of Oscar Wildes work this had an excellent story line. The acting was wonderful and it followed the book quite well. This is a must see for anyone that values good literature.

I'm just another customer who was very disappointed to discover that my new DVD of this title (as well as the replacement DVD MPI sent me) had such appallingly bad audio (the actors sound as if they're speaking through wads of cotton). It's also worth noting that MPI's DVD of "Turn of the Screw" has the exact same problem. Beware!

5 out of 5 stars Dorian is very handsome.......2005-10-09

I saw mothion picture about Dorian Gray at the first time. This visual image of Dorian is wonderful for my opinion. I think Wilde's Dorian must be like it

An adaptation of the Christopher Marlowe masterpiece, Doctor Faustus allows Richard Burton (who also co-directed) to sink his teeth into one of the great theater roles, with loyal wife Elizabeth Taylor along for the ride. Now, there were a few good movies and many follies born of the epic marriage of Burton and Taylor; Faustus is one of their most curious progeny. Alas, Burton's performance is hardly scaled back from a big, bellowing stage turn, while elsewhere the film fails to work up the most rudimentary cinematic life. And Liz? She keeps appearing, wordlessly, as a sexed-up dream temptation for poor Faustus, and finally as Helen of Troy, of "Is this the face that launched a thousand ships?" fame. The only real fun to be had here is wondering whether Burton saw the project as a metaphor for his own career: a man who sold his soul in return for earthly pleasures... as embodied by Elizabeth Taylor. --Robert Horton

Description

The legend of Doctor Faustus is the immortal tale of a German conjurer who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a life of adventure and excitement. Richard Burton stars as the aging scholar who makes a deal with the devil for youth, knowledge, and a dazzling mistress. Taylor plays the spellbinding seductress who seals Faustus' fate. Stars Academy Award® nominee Richard Burton and Academy Award® winner Elizabeth Taylor.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Certainly Not One of Burton and Taylor's Best.......2007-01-14

This movie adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's DOCTOR FAUSTUS was panned by the critics in 1968 when it was released as well it should have been. I haven't seen it since then and find it much worse than I remembered. Not much works very well here. In parts of the film, particularly at the beginning, Richard Burton looks for all the world like the Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as he bellows forth. Elizabeth Taylor floats in and out of the scenes, sometimes as a redhead, at other times a blonde and once she appears to be painted silver from head to toe much like the street mimes in European cities. Of course she finally makes her entrance as the beautiful Helen of Troy, causing Faustus to utter the immortal lines, "Is this the face that launched a thousand ships?" The special effects leave much to be desired. Skulls talk and much of the sets look like a Halloween haunted house. Since Burton co-directed this film, he must be responsible in large part for the finished product.

On a positive note, Andreas Teuber turns in a good performance as Mephistoopheles. Unfortunately his acting, along with the words of the great playwright Christopher Marlowe, is not enough to save this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Ripe For Rediscovery........2006-07-04

Back in 1967 when this film was first released, critics jumped all over it as just a Richard Burton-Elizabeth Taylor vanity project which it was but that's all they saw. Now that Dick and Liz have been supplanted by Tom and Katie and Brad and Angelina the film is ripe for rediscovery and there is much to discover here. The beauty of Christopher Marlowe's play lies in the poetry of the lines and the philosophical and theological points the playwright raises. This Oxford University production which Burton co-directed captures its stage origins but is cleverly opened up in a number of ways which turn it into a fascinating cinematic experience thanks to an imaginative use of lighting, beautiful cinematography, and a haunting musical score by Mario Nascimbene (ONE MILLION YEARS B.C.). And then there is Richard Burton. His intense portrayal of the title character is a joy to behold and serves as a vivid reminder of just what a charismatic performer he was. His glorious voice speaks the Elizabethan text as if it were everyday conversation but with a power and conviction that must be heard to be believed and thanks to the optional DVD subtitles you can follow along as he speaks if you wish. The rest of the cast is made up of members of the Oxford Dramatic Society and they fufill the other roles satisfactorily with Andreas Teuber an absolute standout as a melancholy Mephistopheles. Last but not least there is Elizabeth Taylor. She is required to do nothing more than look beautiful in various guises (she has no dialogue) but she makes her presence felt throughout considering how beautiful she was back then. Chances are no one will redo Marlowe's play on film anytime soon and so there is even more reason to celebrate this version which clearly shows what the play has to offer as a great precursor to Shakespeare and how to make a major film on a minor budget.

5 out of 5 stars Richard the Great.......2006-06-28

This film is a great showcase of the amazing acting talent of the Immortal Richard Burton. What better material than the great Christopher Marlowe, the one who paved the way for Shakespeare for Richard Burton to flex his immense acting power and to speak what poetry in such a beautiful and mighty voice?

The first time I saw this film, I was mesmerized. I had already known of the greatness of Richard Burton with my viewing of The Spy who came in from the Cold but when I saw this film, I was entirely convinced of the fact that Richard Burton is up there with Laurence Olivier, and beyond? Possibly.

4 out of 5 stars Haunting adaptation of Marlowe's play.......2006-06-25

This 1967 film of Christipher Marlowe's play is quite good. Richard Burton is very convincing in the role of Faustus, a scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for power, wealth, and knowledge. Elizabeth Taylor appears briefly several times as Helen of Troy and other characters, but she does not even speak except for her laughing at the end. Burton contributes much more with his fine acting and delivery of great lines from the play such as "Is the face that launched a thousand ships and burnt the topless towers of Illium?" Was Liz Taylor as Helen really that beautiful? I guess that's for her admirers to decide. The film's music is also haunting and moving. All of the great acting and sombre atmosphere help to make up for the movie's being limited almost entirely to a simple stage and inexpensive props.

The DVD has fairly good sound and picture quality, although it doesn't seem that any restoration was done to the film. Trailers from other movies were included but unfortunately no material directly related to this film. The DVD that I purchased was in full screen (despite it being advertised as widescreen), but I am happy with this because my TV screen is the regular size.

2 out of 5 stars Lackluster - should have been so much better!.......2006-05-02

If it was not for the stellar performance of Richard Burton this movie would be worthless. He rants and raves and practically chews up the scenery while the support cast is boring and dull. If the cast was working up to Burton's level this movie would be STUNNING! If the cast was as exciting as Taylor's bust - prominently displayed on her every entrance - the movie would be spectacular! Unfortunately, it has all the spontaneity of a bad senior class play.

3 out of 5 stars Look at it from the 80's perspective!.......2004-07-27

The 80's movies, Horror, Comedy and of course Disney was high camp and over the top cheese. If you approach this movie that way then it is a 5! I had the pleasure of seeing it at the age of 12 and loved it, The song Roses and Rainbows came to me at that emotional time we call puberty. It taught to believe in ones self and don't wait for someone else too, A great lesson at 12! I had the pleasure of meeting Julie Budd and can tell you that there is not a more down to earth Star out there. So sit back in your parachute pants, tight shirt and spray some crazy color in your hair, Then you might get this movie!

5 out of 5 stars the devil and max devlin.......2004-07-09

This is not actually a review. I love the movie, have it on vhs and would like to get the dvd. However, it doesn't appear to be closed-caption. Any suggestions?

4 out of 5 stars I Don't Care What They Say...I Liked It!!.......2004-02-26

I've read the other reviews of this movie and I'm surprised they're so negative! While I'll admit that it's a little long and that, although I love Julie Budd, they play her big "hit song" about to death, overall I though it was great and had a great lesson or two in there...you just have to look a bit below the surface to find the powerful ones. (i.e., if you accept the devil's terms, you've already lost) I'll stop there for fear of giving too much away.
I think this movie is funny, entertaining and maybe not for really young kids. I'll bet the viewers who were bored grew up with The Terminator rather that good old fashioned Disney films.

1 out of 5 stars Have trouble sleeping? Insert this and push 'play'........2002-05-23

Bill Cosby has a lot in common with Bob Newhart, they both were a huge success at releasing uproariously funny comedy albums, and hit sitcoms and both were in dreadful films. This is one such Cosby flop. Cosby is the Devil. In the first half hour of the film a person (on earth) offhandedly remarks that it is as hot as hell, Cosby laughs and says he doesn't know how hot it is. That my friends is the funniest line in the picture. A true turkey.

1 out of 5 stars I Just Plain Didn't Like It..........2002-01-29

I just didn't like this movie. The story was bland and idiotic. The acting was TERRIBLE, led with two memoribly terrible performances from Bill Cosby (The scene where he turns into the devil near end, it was almost funny. It would have been if it wasn't so BAD!!!), and Julie Budd (The "Phone Scene" was educational to me. I learned that I could actually sleep with my eyes open!) An all around terrible film, with an even worse soundtrack! The only reason I'm giving it 1 star is because I can't give it zero!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Adaptation .......2005-11-21

Pact with the Devil begins with one Louis (Ethan Erickson in his first starring role) working as a go-fer for a blonde fashion photographer (Jennifer Nitsch). One of the other photographers, Henry Wooten (Malcom McDowell) takes an interest in Louis. Henry talks to Louis about his interests and it turns out that Louis is trying to become a professional photographer in his own right, but is going nowhere in his quest. Henry tells Louis that with his good looks, he ought to be "in front of the camera." In other words, Louis should endeavor to become a male model. Louis agrees to hire Henry as his business manager and as a result, Henry takes some photographs of Louis and shows them around to other photographers. Soon, Louis's career as a model is booming.

However, there are problems. Louis's girlfriend (Amy Sloan) gets jealous of his accomplishments and accuses him of "selling out." Also, Louis comes to realize that his new career will last only as long as his good, youthful looks do. Henry, however offers Louis a solution to his problem, which Louis comes to call a "pact with the devil." Louis changes his name to Dorian Gray. Henry takes a photograph of "Dorian" that is blown up to large size and framed. As long as this photo exists, Dorian will maintain his youthful good looks and enjoy perfect health while his framed photo ages. In other words, the image of Dorian ages the way that the human being formerly named Louis would have if he did not make his pact with the devil Henry Wooten. If the picture is destroyed, then Louis's looks will revert to what they were in the picture at the time of its destruction and Louis's health will be similarly impaired. Truly, Louis/Dorian's arrangement with his business manager Henry Wooten is a pact with the devil.

So, how does Pact with the Devil compare to previous movie versions of "The Picture of Dorian Gray"? Its not the best version, but its one of the better productions. While changing its focus to the fashion photography scene, it stays true to the basic plot of Wilde's novel. The cinematography is first rate and the acting is pretty strong too.

Ethan Erickson has a rare combination of strong acting talent coupled with tremendous good looks. He should go far in his acting career. Although Jennifer Nitch was great as a fashion photographer, she passed away in a freak accident in 2004. Malcom McDowell turns in a strong performance as the satanic Henry Wooten who literally exudes both suave debonair and malevolent evil.

2 out of 5 stars Pact With The Devil doesnt pack a punch or a hit.......2005-06-18

This movie is about a man named Louis, played by Ethan Erickson (The In Crowd, Tv's Buffy The Vampire Slayer), and he becomes a model, and his manager is the wilyeyed Henry, played by Malcolm McDowell. McDowell tells Louis about the story of Dorian Gray and how he made a pact with the devil. Louis or Dorian now writes in blood and he soon has eternal youth. This very interesting movie gets it fuel towards the middle but it can't help it. Very predictable. Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, I:Spy) is wasted in my mind and why the hell is this movie introducing Ethan Erickson? He has been in a movie or two before this and a tv series..come on people get with it. Erickson is an ok actor and he does some ok acting in this. Unspeakably boring for a while, then it gets a shot of something and then it goes into a coma.

1 out of 5 stars Miserable, maudlin rehash.......2005-04-09

There is very little redeeming here, even with Malcolm McDowell in the lead role. The tranforming of Henry into a Mephistophelean madman dooms this straight-to-video piece to the B-movie bin.

The movie makers can't decide if this is to be a "Red Shoe Diaries" episode or something from "Tales of the Dark Side." The satanic undertones and climax are laughable at best. I'm not even sure this deserves an "R" rating -- certainly it didn't get it for the sex...

Yes, Ethan Erickson is HOT, but he won't be remembered for this piece of rot. Full of plot holes and predictable "twists," "Pact with the Devil" must have Oscar Wilde spinning in his grave. It's clear that those responsible for this tripe have very little understanding of Wilde, let alone the ability to translate his aesthetic philosophy to the 21st century.

There's very little character development to the point that it's hard to care who lives or dies. It's all about that climactic scene -- "0oooh! What will the picture look like by the end!"

Don't waste your time. Rent the 1976 BBC version with John Gielgud if you want to hear the tale Wilde meant to tell!

3 out of 5 stars Ingrates!.......2005-01-10

Based on Oscar Wilde's classic "The Picture of Dorian Gray", this film "deals" with a common stage hand named 'Lewis' {Ethan Erickson} who makes a pact with The Devil in exchange for wealth and fame, and ultimately, to fund his passion for photography, which merely became an erstwhile segueway to his self-imposed damnation. Immediately, upon dabbing a mirror with his blood one stormy night, he begins experiencing an increase in the quality of life, as all his desires and indulgences are met. A rather mysterious man with the unlikely name of "Henry" {Michael Mc Dowell}, detects potential in him, thereby granting his favor by making him a super-model, to which he takes advantage of a marvellous lifestyle of carnal delights, and all he has to do is essentially "strike a pose", while remaining youthful and handsome forever, while his hidden portrait assumes old age - but wouldn't you know it, he eventually dissappears and becomes an ingrate. At one point, he becomes essentially a "kept man" in the manse of a European couple wherein he becomes the surrogate lover of a gorgeous brunette while her husband watches on - that relationship eventually leads to a lethal extreme. The prodigal eventually returns to the source of his fortune, and not being able to handle fortune and fame, eventually commits suicide and reverts to his so-called "true form", reminiscient of Nosferatu. So The Prince of Darkness goes back to the drawing board and seeks out another hopeful who may appreciate the gift so graciosly conferred.

What I primarily enjoyed about this film is that it did not rely heavily upon the typical exaggerrated aesthetics of the mythos, but kept the storyline subtle enough to lend an air of pseudo-believability in a contemporary world.

3 out of 5 stars MALEVOLENT MALCOLM.......2004-08-07

PACT WITH THE DEVIL is another variation on the classic Oscar Wilde novel THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY. Director Allan Goldstein uses the music video format in some of the scenes, but manages to keep the pace interesting and enigmatic.
Ethan Erickson (Jawbreaker) plays Louis, a gofer for a photographer; he wants to become a photographer himself. Malcolm McDowell plays the mysterious Henry, the manager of the photographer who starts taking an interest in Louis--he wants him to become the model for a new line of cologne. Of course, Louis doesn't think he has it to be a model (hasn't he looked in the mirror lately---he's almost criminally good looking). But once Henry persuades Louis to give it a try, the bug bites and Louis is suddenly renamed Dorian, and becomes a super model. During this time, Henry familiarizes Dorian with the story of Dorian Gray, and how Dorian made a wish to remain forever young while his portrait ages. One night, Dorian makes that wish and lo and behold, it comes true.
Dorian descends into a level of decadency and vanity, and several people he loves suffer. This is the price he has to pay to maintain his eternal youth.
McDowell is devilishly good in his role, infusing Henry with suave debonair and malevolent evil. Erickson is surprisingly good in the boy toy role, his eternal youth becoming the curse instead of the blessing.
PACT WITH THE DEVIL sets no new standards in the Dorian Gray lineage, but it is entertaining and well done.

Description

I Was a Teenage Faust is the re-telling of Goethe's classic tale about a man who sold his soul, with a new twist. It's been 15 years since Mr. Five has delivered a soul to his boss, and unless he signs someone up, he'll be roasting in eternal flames himself. He finds a long-suffering teenage geek who would do anything to be one of the cool kids.

2 out of 5 stars Historically interesting film marred by production problems.......2004-12-02

This is the 1913--i.e., first silent--version of the film The Student of Prague and for that reason alone, is of great interest. Starring famed German silent actor Paul Wegener in the title role, it is a very short (40 minutes) rendition of a classic German tale of the supernatural, based on a short story by Hans Heinz Ewers, who wrote the great vampire novel Alraune.

In making this available, one would think that Alpha Video has done a great service. However, there are numerous problems with this release. Firstly, as previously pointed out in another review here, the video quality is only fair, marred by many of the typical scratches and visual blips common to non-remastered films from this period. Secondly, the title cards are so sketchy that there can be sizeable snatches of dialogue--i.e., we can see the actors' mouths moving--and only one title card is presented for the entire sequence. And thirdly, perhaps most importantly--this was also pointed out previously--the soundtrack music, apparently newly composed for this release, is organ music that has only two themes for the entire length of the film. Hence, the same series of notes is repeated almost endlessly. This, more than anything else, ruins the feeling, character, flavor, essence itself of the film.

While Alpha has made some great films available at low cost, and this is one of them, there is a huge difference between silent films and sound films. They should be very careful not to get rock bottom composers for their silent films who create slapdash soundtracks that either bore viewers to tears or make them want to throw things at the monitor.

The Alpha Video stable of sound films is a much better bet. This one, frankly, stinks. The two stars are for the availability of the film itself; that's it.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible DVD.......2004-08-03

The film itself, although not a masterpice, is a very interesting one and genuinely eerie. However, the DVD is so poor that I could hardly appreciate this at all. I understand that the film is over 90 years old, but it had clearly been copied from what looks like a very poor quality videocassette. Kino's releases of the Lumiere brothers' films are of FAR better quality, and they were made nearly 20 years before 'The Student of Prague'! Avoid it, unless you really desperately want to see the film, and even then I wouldn't recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars no masterpeice paul.......2004-07-19

THE STUDENT OF PRAGUE'is the first manifistation of german expressionist horror in cinema and is thus of more historical importance then artistic.Technically the film is typical of european movies of the pre world war one era before d.w griffith's editing patterns would introduce the montage principal to europe.ALPHA'S print seems to have been duped from an VHS copy and is murky and dark in places and is also missing the final shot of balduin's doppelganger sitting mournfully over his tomb;also the organ score is bloody monotonous;still at the price you cant reallly quibble.Lets hope that image or kino international release a decent copy in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Wegener before the Golem.......2004-07-02

I really have to tip my hat to Alpha Video for releasing this beauty of early German cenema. They used a pretty good print and their copy is good.
The "Student of Prague" is a tale of a student/fencing master who sells his soul to the Devil and later must pay the price. The story has been filmed several times but this is the first attempt to capture the story of film and it is a very early effort. On one hand it has the primitive look of movies before about 1920. On the other hand there are great exterior shots and interesting trick photography. In all, keeping in mind that it is a very early film, Paul Wegener did a great job of telling a visually interesting story. I just hope that Alpha video will press on and give us the Conrad Veidt version of "Student of Prague."

I love these cheesy 80's flicks lots of fun,They just don't make them like this no more. If you take these movies to seriously or like newer horror movies stay away from this by all means...............

1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2005-10-14

I was surprised. Surprised because I think I have seen that movie on late-night TV. I know, it's not the best review to hear, but if you see this movie you will believe it. I was expecting a movie that has a little more action; a movie that didn't look like it was made by a high school movie club. No, I'm afraid this movie is all that. I guess I can only expect this when I'm looking for the cheapest, interesting, movies.

2 out of 5 stars Cheesy.......2003-04-05

Expected more from this flick by reading reviews. Couldn't find a place to rent it so I bought it, I was beat out of 10 bucks. You won't miss a thing.

2 out of 5 stars Way too slow and cheesy.......2001-01-24

I just recently watched this film and found it very boring and extremely fake. The acting was basically non-existent and it seems that every bloke in this film is only out to get into the lead ladies pants. The only appealing feature of this film was the nude scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Distasteful and ultimately gratifying........1999-08-26

The opening rape scene was particularly distasteful but really gets the viewer primed for the ultimate revenge by the Necromancer (Lois Masten). One of Elizabeth Kaitan's, (aka Cayton), less nude-filled roles. Filmed on the Pepperdine campus in Malibu this movie is a must see if you like horror flicks.
