Three Strikes, You're Out........2007-01-04

This was the third movie we have gotten from Amazon...two were gifts and this one we purchased. None of them has worked. This one I purchased for my husband as a Christmas gift. He had wanted this movie for quite some time and this was the first place where I was able to find it. I was happy and so was he...until we played it at the family Chritsmas gathering. In the final 15 minutes of the movie when it started jumping back repeatedly. We tried it in two other DVD players with the same results. We should not have been suprpised as the two we received last year as gifts did the same...we had blamed it on our old DVD player that we replaced on account of those two movies. I guess we could have saved out money. Several friends have told us very similar stories. We won't buy movies form Amazon again.

Inspiring Tale (small spoiler alert included).......2006-11-05

I found this movie to be well-done and inspiring in content. On the whole, the characters were believable and genuine. Don Johnson shines in this film as a character whose integrity does not always get the best personal results, but you find yourself totally liking this person. Rod Steiger could have stayed home for this one - he was so wooden and half-hearted (even down to wearing a ridiculous medallion that was totally out of context) that I literally cringed every time he came on the screen. The rest of the cast were also very good and fit well into the storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed this film (although the scene where they shoot the first batch of horses is very hard to stomach) and have watched it many times. Excellent!

My son LOVES airplanes and jets! I bought this DVD based on the rave reviews of people with young children loving this video. If you want a DVD that shows airplanes/jets flying, DO NOT BUY THIS DVD! The name of the video should be, "Watch the Blue Angles Get Ready to Fly," because that is what this video is. In the first 20 minutes there are short scenes of the jets flying. Then the next 25 minutes is NO FLYING just talking and showing the Blue Angles getting ready for their show. In the last 8 minutes you get to see part of an air show. My son has never made it to that point. He wants to see airplanes/jets fly and I'm now on a new search for a DVD that will do this for him.

My 3 year old boy loves this DVD. He would watch it over and over and now claims that he wants to be a pilot. I think that this DVD goes over detail that I thought wouldn't impress a 3 year old but he often repeats their simulations & commands. I think it's a great DVD and I got one for my 2 year old God-son who is in love with it as well. The only possible bad point is that my kid & God-son want to keep watching it over and over. As a parent one might not be too happy w/ their kids watching too much of one thing or too much TV period.

Mediocre at Best..........2005-06-18

I guess I should have realized by some of the other reviews that this DVD would be geared toward a younger audience (and by younger I mean 10 or under), but I thought I would be getting more footage of aerial maneuveurs than this DVD provided. The cinematography is on par with that of a slightly above-average TV show documentary.

"Documentary" would be an an accurate word to describe this DVD - it is much more about the preparation and work it takes to put on a Blue Angels air show than it is about the Blue Angels aerial acrobatics. So if you're like me and looking an expertly filmed documentary of what a Blue Angels air show looks like, look elsewhere.

Entertainment & Excitement.......2005-06-15

My son (almost 4) is crazy about airplanes so I purchased this DVD based on the other reviews already written for this DVD. I thought it could possibly be a little above what he could conceptually understand as it was a more "behind the scenes" type show and didn't have a lot of actual display flying in it but I was wrong. My son has been glued to this DVD every evening for a week!

To be honest, I didn't know a lot about the Blue Angels myself but the first time I watched the DVD, I have to admit that even I was glued to it. The DVD tells you a lot of interesting facts about the Blue Angels that I don't normally think you would know just by going to see them at an airshow. For e.g. what certain hand signals mean, what jobs the ground crew have etc. I thought the video quality was excellent and the behind the scenes information wonderfully informative.

The only disappointment I felt was that there was not enough video footage shown of the Blue Angels flying taken at an actual airshow. There is only about 10 minutes flying at the end of the video and a little display half way through the video when one of the Blue Angels is taking a member of the press up for a quick flight.

Otherwise, I think this would be a great video for any kids who are interested in flight or anyone who wants to know more about the Blue Angels.

Dressed for terror.......2007-02-06

Basil Rathbone is one of the two great Holmes actors in movie history (the other being Jeremy Brett). And he was in fine form in "Sherlock Holmes Collection Volume 3," which varies from merely okay to absolutely brilliant.

"Dressed to Kill" has a friend of Watson's (Nigel Bruce) telling Holmes of a bizarre crime -- someone broke into his house, and stole a worthless music box from a valuable collection. Then the man is murdered -- and three plain little music boxes are the key to solving an elaborate mystery.

"Terror By Night" has Holmes hired to look after a valuable diamond belonging to a wealthy woman, as she travels back to Scotland. Of course, the diamond gets stolen and the woman's son is murdered in the attempt, and now Holmes discovers that the murderer is an old enemy.

"The Woman In Green" deals with a serial killer -- four women have died, and each time a finger was removed. The police think that it's just a baffling series of crimes, but Holmes knows better -- and he suspects that his old, supposedly-dead nemesis Moriarty (Henry Daniell) is involved.

Finally there's "In Pursuit to Algiers," in which the king of Ravenia has been murdered -- and now his son is in danger too. On the cruise to his homeland, the young king pretends to be a relative of Watson's -- but Holmes still has to guard him against an array of potential murderers.

These were some of the later Holmes adventures, often not based (or loosely based) on Arthur Conan Doyle's works. But even the weakest ("Dressed to Kill") is still an enjoyable mystery, with some amusing moments and unexpected twists. They're just not as brilliant as Doyle's, that's all.

And they are solidly written and directed, with plenty of interesting settings, from the claustrophobic train to Scotland to a hypnotists' society. And the filmmakers throw in some wonderful little twists, such as a switcheroo Holmes plays on his enemy in "Terror By Night."

Rathbone is still best known for playing Holmes, and he does it well -- cool, cerebral, but with a gentle humor and warmth in scenes such as the little girl's rescue. Bruce doesn't fare as well, since the capable Watson is portrayed as a kindly bumbler, but he does a solid enough job with a poorly-portrayed character.

"The Sherlock Holmes Collection Volume 3" is a bit less solid than the other collections, but still very nicely done. Definitely worth watching.

Satisfied but Bewildered.......2004-12-17

After having spent years watching all 14 of the videos from Key, I recently purchased volume 3 of the Sherlock Holmes Collection. Everything they've said about the enhanced picture/sound quality is true, however, the DVD extras are missing. Am I the only one? The DVD extras promoted on the back of the case include: audio commentary with Stuart Davies, footage of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, production notes by Richard Valley and Photo Gallery/Original Movie Posters. I don't have any of the extras. It's still worth the buy and a five star gem.

Most favorite Holmes movies........2004-04-24

I couldn't wait to get this set of Holmes. My all-time favorite is Terror by Night. They are super quality and even better than the Key Vidio editions. This volume is NOT COLOR...it's B & W. Amazon...PLEASE CHANGE THIS ASAP!!!! It's deceiving!!! I would have bought it from you but it said that it was COLOR. I went and called Suncoast Pictures and they said it was B&W so I got it there. Fans...it IS B & W. What would a Rathbone, Holmes movie be without it being B & W.

The films on this collection are of truly stunning quality, in comparison to the diabolical Region 2 set by Orbit Media Ltd. Truly fantastic quality. If you are a Basil Rathbone fan, you *must* get this set. I cannot recommend it highly enough. A definate must-buy product. Elementary, my dear Reader.

I will not tell you what the "something special" is, but it was a delightful surprise to me. The plot is good, not the best of all the other Basil Rathbone-Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes' movies, but it has the surprises and excellent supporting cast that these movies all have in common. I enjoyed it very much, and think that the "something special" toward the end of the movie is worth the wait. Hint it has to do with Dr. Watson!!!

Pursuit to Algiers.......2005-08-09

Another entertaining Sherlock Holmes movie. Rathbone and Bruce are by far and away the best Holmes and Watson there is. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie and it completed the series for me.

An oddity - but not an unpleasant one.......2005-02-25

Were it not for "Sherlock Holmes in Washington," "Pursuit to Algiers" would no doubt be considered the very strangest of the Universal Holmes series. The initial mystery at the start of the film is completely obliterated by a plot that is little more than a thriller set on a cruise liner. Ever seen Sherlock Holmes play bodyguard for a foreign dignitary? No? How about his clever defeat of not one, not two, but three expert assassins? Never seen that, either? Well, now's your chance!

In all fairness, it's not that bad - it just doesn't feel like a Sherlock Holmes story. For better or worse, with this film the Universal series is heading into its final decline, and the writers have abandoned all hope of making the films so much as resemble a real Conan Doyle story. As a result, they're resorting to things like cruise liners to liven up what's becoming a somewhat flat formula. It's not a bad idea, but unfortunately, it does away with most of the fog-and-darkness mystique that everyone loves about Sherlock Holmes.

Basil Rathbone himself is, by now, starting to seem very tired. For most of the plot, he stays rooted in a sort of bored, dour mode, only occasionally shifted by a moment such as his (unusually amused) appraisal of Watson's choice in women. Nigel Bruce, on the other hand, is having a ball. Thankfully, he's less embarassingly inept than in the previous film, "The Woman in Green," and more bizarre still, he's actually the focus for much of this picture. Watson is genuinely concerned for Holmes early on, grieves for him when he's believed dead, has a couple of nice comic moments, and - best of all - gets to sing "Loch Lomond." (I'm fairly sure that's Nigel Bruce's actual singing voice, too. Great timbre.) All in all, it's probably Bruce's best outing since "The Scarlet Claw."

There may not be much mystery here, but the thriller aspect is not done poorly; there are some very fun scenes of Holmes matching wits and banter with the villains. There's also a real surprise at the end - a shocker for one of these Holmes pictures, actually - that helps to raise the film up from the rather lacklustre story.

This picture has, with its eleven fellow films, been painstakingly restored by the UCLA Film and TV Archive for the DVD release. It has a few quality problems, and is singled out for that in the "Sherlock Holmes Collection: Volume Two" restoration featurette, but most of the trouble comes at the very beginning and (quite abrupt) ending of the film. For the majority of its length, it looks fine, albeit with the occasional flicker, and I found it far less distracting than the variable picture on "The House of Fear."

All told, this is a fun and watchable entry in the Universal Holmes series, but not one of the essentials. If you're going to buy it for completeness' sake, go with MPI's "Sherlock Holmes Collection: Volume Three" set; otherwise, casual fans should stick with a rental.

Very good movie.......2004-08-02

This is a good movie. Just got it in the mail the other day, and my son and I loved it. Basil Rathbone was wonderful in his role as Sherlock Holmes. I'm glad we ordered it.

The Suspense is just beginning..........2006-05-09

The saga of young Jimmy Kudo and his quest to track down the men in black suits who changed him into pint-sized alter-ego Conan Edogawa has just begun, but as he quickly learns, the danger is only going to get more intense - the risk, more severe.

In Volume 2 of the Season One set, a mysterious girl arrives at the Moore Detective Agency, claiming that her boyfriend (who happens to be the missing Jimmy Kudo) has vanished, and asks Conan to help her find him - much to the dismay of the furious Rachel. Later, Conan has to track down a mysterious group of men who have kidnapped young Amy. Then, a mysterious message left on a small calculator is the only clue Conan has to find a sniper determined to assassinate a passenger on a speeding train.

Season One, Volume 2 does not fail to deliver the franchise's promise of mystery, suspense, and geniune good times. The Moonlight Sonata Murder Case, the series' first two-part mystery (eps. 011-012), is one of the better episodes of the first few seasons. If you enjoy the show, this is one of the DVDs you need to own.

Criminal Psychologist, Jake Nyman (Robert Forster), is taking a much need vacation from responsibility. An experimental road trip during which every decision will be made at a flip of a coin. Jake and Sandra's dark romance is soon driven by chance acts of crime and kindness, all governed by a flip of a coin - At least until Sandra disappears and Jake unwittingly picks up her suspicious sister Alice…

Don't waste your time and electricity........2006-06-16

Maybe, just maybe, this could have been a good movie in the right hands.Somewhere buried deep was a plot.The dialogue was cheesy and the acting was amateurish. It was too "David Lynch"!Not funny enough to be a comedy, and not serious enough to be a drama. And the ending just leaves you hanging. The budget had to be $1.00, which, ironically, was the denomination of the coin he kept flipping. I forced myself to watch it hoping against hope that I could find some redeeming quality, but, alas, I could not.I ended up throwing the tape in the trash.(I didn't even rewind it!) I couldn't bear to inflict this pain on anyone else.

you're gonna like this movie! All is not what it seems in this road thriller. Every actor is cast perfectly. The story unfolds nicely and calmly, and then shifts---at the flip of a coin. A twisted tale where situations appear as one thing, but really soething sinister is going on. It's really difficult to talk about a movie with alot of plot twists without ruining it. All persons involved with this project deserve a high-five for a thrilling suspence movie!

Troma Studios' 35th anniversary reissue of the 1969 Samuel Fuller film Shark highlights the raw materials that made Burt Reynolds a movie star. This movie is a treasure hunt/double-cross/adventure story set in Northern Africa. The sharks are both real (a stunt man was killed filming one of the underwater scenes) and metaphorical as evidenced by the behavior of Reynolds's character and his co-stars, Arthur Kennedy and Sylvia Pinal. Reynolds stars as Kane, a gun smuggler who loses his stash and goes on the take for a quick buck. Kennedy and Pinal share Reynolds's desperation as they have trouble rounding up locals to help with Kennedy's "research" after a shark attacks and kills a young local diver. The double-crosses lead up to a climactic underwater crescendo. Overall, the film is a basic adventure story that will appeal to Reynolds's current camp appeal. The DVD print quality is poor in most of the land scenes, though the water scenes are quite good. This version of the film includes a number of Troma extras such as interviews and typical self-promotional Troma Studio videos. --Brian Saltzman

All Star B-Movie !!!.......2004-05-11

Burt Reynolds, Barry Sullivan, Silvia Pinal, Arthur Kennedy - WOW!!!! - What a cast ! I can really see why Mr. Reynolds was considered for the James Bond part (1969); after seeing him in this action flick. Although, Sam Fuller had problems finishing this low budget movie - he still got the job done. While the story is uneven at times; Arthur Kennedy is a total delight as a(n)alcoholic physician (with a heart of gold !). This movie can be purchased for a very small amount of change - It's well worth it. One of my favorites !

Excellent Shark/Adventure Movie!!.......2003-10-06

Burt Reynolds does an excellent job in this 1969 shark/adventure movie.It's a must see!!
