Dating as far back as the silent film era, Bulldog Drummond, looking for mystery and adventure and always finding it, offered movie audiences an entertaining time. Perhaps the most fun came with the "B" series starring John Howard as our hero and lovely Heather Angel as his girl. A fine cast of "B" stalwarts such as H.B. Warner, Reginald Denny, E.E. Clive, and Elizabeth Patterson always kept this series fun.

This one starts off with a bang and moves at a good clip, making it one of the best in the series. A bank robbery Bulldog and Phyllis just happen upon provides the adventure while the real question, as always, was whether Hugh would ever make it to the alter with his cute girl Phyllis! She's given him a ten day ultimatum in this one, or she'll marry another. Can Bulldog manage not to blow his last chance with Phyllis and her skeptical aunt?

A mad painter, a radio holding a secret that Bulldog has sent to Phyllis in France, unknowingly putting her in harm's way, and a fine bad guy in Eduardo Cianelli make it nearly, but not quite impossible. This is definitely one of the more entertaining entries in the "B" series. James Hogan's snappy direction and a swift moving screenplay from Garnett Weston and Stuart Palmer give this one lots of zip.

A great ending wraps up everything nicely and gives audiences what they've been waiting for from the beginning: a chance for cute little Heather Angel and our hero John Howard to tie the knot! Fans of "B" films and series will find this one extremely enjoyable. Great fun!

The Bulldog Drummond series was quite big in the late thirties and early forties, so much so that there were THREE sequels released in 1937 alone! So what was all the fuss about, you ask?

To begin with, the characters are likable and play well off one another. Oddly, this chemistry seems to work even though the three main roles all had rotating stars during the run of the series! The big reason for the constancy in chemistry is that two key supporting roles were always played by the same great character actors: Reginald Denny as the hilariously dense, but nonetheless good-hearted Algy Longworth, and E. E. Clive as the butler Tenny, who generally stole the show at least once per movie with his droll delivery (as sort of an early predecessor of Alfred in Batman Begins).

"Bulldog Drummond's Peril" introduces a slight bit of sci-fi into the series as Algy's father-in-law invents a process to artificially create diamonds (years before it actually happened in real life). When the typically clueless Algy and Gwen Longworth give the first of these stones to Hugh Drummond and Phyllis as a wedding gift, murder ensues and the diamond is stolen! Naturally, Hugh and Phyllis' wedding is postponed--AGAIN! (Did they EVER actually tie the knot? I've seen six or seven of these films and the wedding is always put off!)

This sets off a manic chase from Switzerland to England with so many plot turns that its easy to see how much fun the filmmakers were having with the material. The balance of humor and action is always great in these movies, but this one stands out for the single funniest "forgotten" scene of the golden age of cinema. Tenny the aged butler chases the bad guys on a motorcycle and does a hero-style jump from cycle to truck, followed by an acrobatic truck-top walk, then concluding with a typically droll delivery as he holds the truck driver at gunpoint. I was in the floor laughing!

Of course, everything works out in the end, other than the wedding plans, naturally (This is a Bulldog Drummond movie, after all)! I'm not really spoiling anything by saying that, because these movies are the kind where you never feel any danger for the heroes. Instead, you just spend an enjoyable hour or so with a fun bunch of people having a good time!

I wish they still made movies like these.

This film will appeal only to those who really enjoy B movies from the 1930's. Put out by Congress Films, this is a real low budget flick that will have you snoring by the second reel. It seems that someone has stolen one of Bulldog Drummond's wedding presents, and in the process killed a man guarding all the gifts. Bulldog (John Howard)leaves his bride-to-be to get the gift back. From here on the movie doesn't get any better. "Bulldog Drummond's Revenge" is a better selection in the series. Better yet, opt for Monogram Picture's "Mr Wong, Detective" starring Boris Karloff which is a nicer effort and actually has a tricky ending.
