A strong candidate for the designation of most thrilling action movie ever made (the turbo-charged exhilaration of its full-throttle highway chases has never been equaled), the second part of George Miller's post-apocalyptic trilogy is also a magnificently imagined movie myth. Like the Star Wars trilogy (by that other George) the Mad Max films draw their inspiration from the works of mythologist Joseph Campbell. In the 1979 original, Max (Mel Gibson) is a policeman, the last guardian of civilization and order in a devastated world reduced to chaos. But when a leather-clad gang of sadomasochistic speed demons mows down Max's family, his remaining connections to humanity are also permanently severed. After brutally exacting his revenge, Max wanders off into the wasteland alone, "a burned out shell of a man" who (to paraphrase The Searchers) is destined to wander forever between the winds. In The Road Warrior, Max rediscovers a sliver of his shattered humanity, and a spark of redemption, when he helps an embattled colony of pioneers fight off the savages who are after that most precious of all commodities: "guzzline." Max is transformed into a legendary hero, just as Mel Gibson was catapulted to international movie stardom. With its final stirring images, The Road Warrior transcends its genre (whatever that may be--science fiction? Western? action adventure?) and becomes something timeless. It's a great movie. --Jim Emerson

3 out of 5 stars Not Mad Enough.......2007-06-09

This is an interesting film, which if occasionally a bit wooden, virtually created its own genre overnight, and made Mel Gibson a star.

Perhaps its most noteable feature was George Miller's use of unusual camera angles, which created one or two iconic images. Sometimes it has the feeling of an exploitation film, but it never develops in that way and by today's standards it seems rather tame.

It looks as though it was made on a pretty low budget, and I prefer the brasher sequels where a little more polish was added. It remains a film curiosity, but really not much more than that.

5 out of 5 stars A post-apocalyptic standard..........2007-05-15

If "Raiders of the Lost Ark" set the standard for serial cliffhangers in the modern sense, then "The Road Warrior" sets the standard for post-apocalyptic storytelling...

Set in a bleak future with no formal laws and a need for gas, bands of humanity scramble for everything we take for granted. Even though $3+ bucks at the pump is wrong, having to literally fight and kill for it is something I hope we will never have to face ...

"The Road Warrior" is a timeless story of rebellious nobility and the true goodness of humanity despite its struggle between greed and survival...

4 out of 5 stars The Road Warrior.......2007-05-07

This is a great addition to the first in the saga of the Mad Max movies. This film is a non stop roller coaster trill ride with great stunts and vehicles, as well as good characters and acting over all. A definite must own for a fan of this series.

5 out of 5 stars Sorely in need of an upgrade!.......2007-03-20

The Road Warrior is one of my all time favorite movies without a doubt. And its story has been told many times in all the reviews below but what I think is sorely needed is some kind of a deluxe edition DVD. There appears to be few, if any, extras here. And its prequel mad Max has already gotten a special edition, why not its sequel? For instance, how about a commentary track from director George Miller? I know that getting Gibson to reminisce about this film is an unlikely proposition. And I'd love to see the original trailer for this film. If I recall it ended with a ghostly voice saying "...The Road Warrior..you better pray he's out there" On the technical side, how about some info on the famous car Gibson drove here?

5 out of 5 stars Not cheesy, not just an action movie........2007-01-19

You know, just because a film has action in it does not mean it is designed for morons and any other message is secondary. The Road Warrior knows when not to take itself too seriously, but it is a frightening glimpse at what human beings are capable of, and the type of heroics it takes to overcome tyranny. Not light stuff by any stretch...

For so many of these reviewers I wonder what is really so "light" about seeing a woman savagely beaten and raped. Or the sickening behavior that leads to the killing of an innocent dog. The truth of the matter is that The Road Warrior is one hell of a movie that uses action and violence thrillingly -- but in the end winds up saying something about its nature -- a far stretch from what you will see from Jerry Bruckheimer.

The debate that goes on inside the camp is exactly the debate all societies face when dealing with barbarians. For my money, this film is better than Seven Samurai. And yes -- the action is AMAZING. It just feels pure, visceral in a way that most American films do not.

Great movie and great Blu-Ray disc. The Road Warrior looks very good in High Def and it looks alot better then the DVD version. The Road Warrior has always been one of my favorite movies and the car stunts in the movie are amazing.I also thought Mel did a great job as Max and it's no surprise that he went on to become a huge star.Yeah I know Mel has lost some fans due to his drunken antics, but that's not going to stop me from watching Mel Gibson movies, hes starred in some great movies and also directed some great movies such as Braveheart,Passion of The Christ, and Apocalypto.Well anyway if you are a fan of The Mad Max movies and you where disapointed with the DVD version of The Road Warrior and you have a PS3 or a stand alone Blu-Ray player then get The Road Warrior on Blu-Ray it blows the DVD version away. Also it's been released on HD DVD too.I do hope George Miller will someday get the 4th film Mad Max:Fury Road made?

5 out of 5 stars A true post apocalyptic classic, now in High-def.......2007-05-27

I just finished watching The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2) on Blu-ray which I ordered from Amazon. It's one of my favorite films and still holds up today, largely thanks to its wonderful direction and quality attention to realistic detail. Likened to westerns and samurai films, it should be at the top of anyones list that is a fan of action, cars, post apocalyptic futures and stories about a lone wolf type hero. The quality of the picture is great and the sound is good too thanks to being on Blu-ray. And if you are worried about getting this because you haven't seen the first Mad Max, fear not, the film is done in such a way you don't really need to. There is a short recap at the start of the film which will help tie things together. Also a new feature exclusive to the high-def version not found on regular DVD is a new audio commentary with the director. I haven't listened to it yet so I'm hoping it sheds insight onto the production of this wonderful film.
See Mel Gibson at his best as... The Road Warrior.

5 out of 5 stars Do the Hustle........2007-06-06

Inventive. Action-packed. Absurd. Hilarious. Touching. Violent. Lively. Smart. And above all else- Superb.

You don't need all of those adjectives to describe a great movie, but you do when describing Stephen Chow's masterpiece Kung Fu Hustle. Taking place in 1940s China, our story involves the hundreds-strong Axe Gang, their efforts to take over the impoverished and dilapidated Pig Sty Alley, and the effects on Pig Sty's tenants. The gang believes taking or Pig Sty will be a cakewalk, but a few of the residents aren't about to let that happen.

Perhaps the most unique thing about the film is how our attention is shifted from one protagonist to another. The first part focuses on three Kung Fu experts (a baker who carries a wooden staff that can shatter metal guns, a hardworking laborer, and a sensitive homosexual tailor). The second part is about Pig Sty's tyrannical chain-smoking landlady and her philandering landlord husband. And the third part concerns a loser (played by Chow) who tries to take up life of crime because of a traumatic childhood incident when he tried to do good deed. I've read critics pan KFH because it lacks one true central character, but I just call it doing something different. Oh well, whatever gets those critics through those long and lonely nights.

Unconventional narrative style aside, there are plenty of other reasons to watch such as the eye popping effects and the humor. Ordinarily, I can't stand CGI, but I really love the way it was used here. Chow succeeds in using it in ways that most American filmmakers can't even dream about. A gut-busting Looney Toons inspred foot chase and a fight with two evil street musicians both have to be seen to be believed. Who needs people like Michael Bay who timidly believes he is pushing the envelope, while Chow demolishes the whole stationery store?

5 out of 5 stars Kung Fu Hustle Review.......2007-06-02

This was a great movie, containing a segment from almost every genre known to man. I loved it. The best parts for me were the fighting scenes, where the action is choreographed to be almost a dance. Most prominent in theis movie is the comedy...after the first 5 or ten minutes...that had me laughing all the way through. Though there was a lot of fighting, it was light on violence. I would recommend this movie to viewers at least ten and up. Totally.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-04-18

As a high level martial artist I have to say this is the greatest martial arts movie since the Seven Samurai.

4 out of 5 stars This is hilarious!.......2007-03-24

I rented this movie from Blockbuster, and after I watched it, I had to have it! This is a well written (of you like spoofs) hilarious movie! I'm also a huge fan of "Shaun of the Dead"! So if you like that type of "off beat" humor, you'll love this movie!

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT!!.......2007-02-17

A friend provided a care package of movies before a rather lengthy business trip. He included this movie knowing that I love the genre and told me that this would most likely be a new favorite. The movie they showed on the plane was [..], so I popped the disc into my laptop and lo and behold!! I watched it 2 more times while I was on my business trip and thought it was more brilliant each and everytime. It's funny and heartbreaking and heartwarming and funny and thrilling and funny. But the best part is..It's FUNNY!! I mean hilariously so. The action scenes are well choreographed, but don't look choreographed. The acting is superb. I love this movie! My husband and I never get tired of watching, now the kids watch and love it too.

I've got this movie on DVD, UMD, and now Blu-ray. I'll leave IMDB to tell you about the movie.

I don't have an HD TV (don't ask), so I can't really comment on the picture quality. I'm not an audiophile, so I can't really comment on the sound quality (although on DD5.1 it sounds just fine).

Go ahead and pick it up!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Comedy Action Movie.......2007-05-12

This is definitely one of the better action movies I have seen in a long time. The comedy in the movie is also worth a watch. Stephen Chow tells a great story with absolutely amazing special effects. I have watched this movie many times and watching it on Blu-Ray is an experience in itself.
From the opening sequence, you are drawn to the plot and Stephen's portrayal of his character is first-class. His tribute to Bruce lee is evident throughout the film.
This is definitely a MUST WATCH for all!

4 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly amusing martial arts spoof.......2007-02-06

I really didn't know what to expect out of this movie when my buddy got it from netflix two years ago and brought it over. I've never been much of a fan of martial arts films, but this one definitely had me rolling. This film is riddled with slapstick humor that will either have tears of joy or or regret rolling down your cheeks. My wife did not enjoy this movie, but it definitely has a spot reserved on my DVD shelf. If you think you'd enjoy a cross between "The Simpsons" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", will more than likely get a kick out of this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Abuse Is Not To Be Taken Lightly.......2006-12-18

That's the message here; and this is what can happen if action is not taken. Candace Cameron and Fred Savage leave their days as child stars behind in this 1996 NBC television movie, based on a true story. Stacy Collins (Cameron) is a junior in high school who is shy and uncertain, but when she begins dating handsome senior and star of the school wrestling team, Bobby Tennison (Savage), she feels loved and protected. But behind his charming exterior, Bobby's sweet behavior (leaving her flowers in her locker, giving her gifts, etc.), is a controlling, possessive nature which Stacy tries to dismiss. But he closely monitors her every move and feels threatened if she spends time away from him. Physical violence is commonly introduced. Their friends suspect that things are not as rosy as they seem, but only Stacy's best pal Nicky (Heather McComb) tries to persuade her to end the relationship. Trapped in the feelings of isolation and blaming herself for his inexcusable actions, Stacy lives in fear. Bobby's cousin informs Nicky that he had also mistreated his previous girlfriend (who transferred to to get away from him), and after yet another public fight (during a great school dance, where the nifty 50s is the theme), Stacy, encouraged by Nicky, tells Bobby that it's over. A truly unnerving moment in the hallway after she breaks it off, when he tells her he will never give her up. Through the wired glass of the classroom door his face is like cold, evil granite, his gaze like the black coals of hell. Bobby, under the guise of wanting to stay friends, asks her to come over to his house to give him a haircut. Inevitably, another spat occurs, and, instead of taking her home, he takes her out to a nearby lake where they had their first date. Only Bobby returns to the truck, to the horror of his friend Vince (Eric Balfour), and with blood on his hands. "If I can't have her, no one's gonna," Bobby chillingly states. Stacy is missing; her frantic mother Laura (Michelle Phillips), and friends search for clues, along with the local police; Stacy's ex-boyfriend is strangely calm. Vince, riddled with guilt, makes an anonymous call to the cops, telling them to go look out by the lake. He is eventually brought in for questioning, while Nicky informs Laura of Bobby's abusive tendencies. Vince tells what he knows, and then the investigation moves to Bobby, who finally cracks under the pressure. When Stacy refused to go back to him, he had slit her throat and dumped her body in the lake. Sally Jessy Raphael makes a special appearance as the judge who hands down the life sentence to a stone cold Bobby. She then admonishes all others involved for not speaking up - this is what can happen if you don't.

Those who remember Savage as the wholesome Kevin Arnold on "The Wonder Years" will be surprised at how effective he is - romantic and attractive one minute, angry and obsessive the next. The way Bobby treats his mother, his abusive father's past, and his anger in the wrestling ring are subtle hints of things to come (as is the moment when Stacy takes a shower at Nicky's house - it's pretty obvious that she is being watched). Cameron, who has always excelled at playing kind, naive, gentle characters, does a great job, as always. Heather McComb is the best friend every girl should have, while Michelle Phillips gives just the right amount of balance as the caring but distracted mother who is too busy with work and her own lowlife boyfriend (whom Stacy despises), to realize the dangerous situation her daughter is in.

Hopefully, stories like this will raise more awareness - too many people have looked the other way.

The DVD: This version is slightly different than the one that aired on television. Two Belinda Carlisle songs have been replaced with more current music. The only extras are trailers for direct to video films.

5 out of 5 stars A message that never gets old.......2006-06-22

Candace Cameron and Fred Savage shake off the goody-goody images associated with the roles that brought them teen stardom on Full House and The Wonder Years. Cameron plays Stacy Collins, a normal high school girl full of insecurities who happens to land the class hunk. Savage is Bobby Tennyson, high school wrestler and all-around popular guy. When these two get together, Stacy finally knows what it feels like to be a part of the in-crowd and is so grateful she's willing to look past Bobby's numerous faults.

Their relationship starts off normal enough with Bobby wooing Stacy with flowers and love poems, but he gets progressively more possessive and jealous. Stacy initially thinks it's cute that Bobby is so protective until it gets to the point where he becomes overbearing and irrational. Even when he starts hitting her, she defends him to her friends telling them that you stick by the people you love. "Everything's fine" becomes her mantra even though those closest to her can plainly see that it's not the case.

This relationship closely mirrors the one in which Stacy's mother is involved. Her mother is too absorbed in her own dating situation to understand and acknowledge what's going on with Stacy. Stacy assumes the maternal role, in fact, berating her mother for allowing her boyfriend to treat her badly though she's willing to overlook Bobby's abusive nature. In fact, when her mother confronts her about the abuse, Stacy says "That's your story, not mine." That Stacy's mother backs off at this point is a disgrace and this film strives to point out that in any situation no one should let abuse slide.

This film came out in the early 1990's and was one of those Sunday Night movies aimed at letting teenagers know the ills that will befall them if they're not careful. It's stuck with me all these years because the message is delivered without a scolding undertone, but instead as a reminder of what can go horribly wrong if you let things spiral out of hand. Sally Jessy Raphael has a guest role as the judge in Bobby's trial and she reminds those present who witnessed Stacy's abuse that we have a responsibility to the people who we care about. It's a foolish and dangerous practice to simply shake off abuse with the adage "Love Hurts." It shouldn't.

5 out of 5 stars a powerful made for TV drama.......2006-06-12

I've only seen this movie once on TV back when it first aired like 10 years ago. It was an intriguing drama that drew me in until the credits. It is very well done and the acting is top notch. It was refreshing to see Fred Savage and Candice Cameron in dramatic roles. After watching it I wanted to see it again. When I found out it was coming out on DVD I was really excited. If you haven't seen it I recommend you do if you like dramas. Don't let the made for TV fact scare you. It could have easily been in the theatre in the 80's even though it is not an 80's movies. I'm just saying it is top notch quality. If you can get your hands on a copy of this you won't be disappointed.

Tough but moving, Thunderheart is an unusual story about an arrogant FBI agent (Val Kilmer) who participates in a federal investigation of a murder on an Oglala Sioux reservation. Kilmer's character is part Sioux himself, a detail that leaves him cold as he sets about pushing his way through the community to find facts on the case. In time, however, he begins to feel an ethnic tug and grows increasingly sympathetic to the locals and hostile toward his fellow G-men, much to the dismay of his agency mentor (Sam Shepard). The script is based on real events that occurred on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975 in South Dakota (involving an armed standoff between Indian activists and the FBI, an event that prompted Thunderheart director Michael Apted to make a companion documentary, Incident at Oglala). The conclusion of Thunderheart feels like politically charged whimsy, but the real strength of the film is Kilmer's outstanding performance as a man in transformation. Apted's clear-eyed depiction of the Sioux's spiritual and cultural continuity with the past has none of the cloying romanticism of other films about Indians. Produced by Robert De Niro. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars I've seen this movie three times........2007-05-25

Still can't writing a good review. He is part Souix indian, also fbi agent, But who killed Jimmy? Grandpa know all about Ray, lots of mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Best Tony Hillerman Ever Filmed!?!.......2007-04-14

Although not actually a story by Hillerman Thunder Heart is the perfect marriage of Mystery and Mysticism that has yet to fully translate to either the Silver or Small screen for an actual Hillerman Novel. Why is this? The bottom line I believe is Val Kilmer. Kilmer's cultural transformation is compelling from this initial arrival to his Last Stand.

5 out of 5 stars Real life drama.......2007-03-09

This movie is a great movie. Val Kilmer plays his part excellently. I watch this movie over and over again. Definately a favorite of mine. A must see!

4 out of 5 stars A top-line movie........2007-01-03

I found Thunderheart to be a very touching movie, with an excellent cast. People who are part Indian, like myself, will find much to relate to. The settings, in themselves, tell a story that is only too true about Indian life in these times. It is humorous too, with a sly tongue-in-cheek humor that will appeal to many people. I have viewed this picture many times and get something new out of it constantly. Worth evey penny, and inexpensive to boot. People who like this one should also buy "Last of the Dogmen". Well cast also, and timely, with the thought that this might really happen. These are movies you will KEEP.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Film, And A Terrific Cast!.......2006-10-18

I was pleasantly surprised when I first viewed this film. I was not expecting it to be as good as it was. An FBI agent, Ray (Val Kilmer) with a Native American background is sent into the Oglala Sioux reservation to investigate a murder. He is sent in by the agency due to his Sioux background. However, he does not show interest in either the Sioux culture, or the inhabitants of the reservation. His partner is a well-known veteran of the FBI (Sam Shepard). Shepard does an excellent acting performance as a hardened field agent who has been in the area for quite a number of years. Not to mention he has a solid and well-known reputation within the FBI. However, there is more to Ray's partner than he realizes: But Ray (Kilmer) will soon find out.

The film is further enhanced by the acting of (Graham Greene), whose portrayal of a saavy and intelligent Native American police officer in charge of enforcing the laws of the U.S., on the reservation, are met with hostility by both the members of the tribal council, and the FBI agents in the field itself. The film delves into [to some degree] with events that occured in the 1970's, on various reservations in the USA. Remember A.I.M? [American Indian Movement] Moreover, the film has an underlying plot as to the nature and reasons behind the murder of the Sioux whose death is being investigated by the FBI. Is the FBI behind it? Was it A.I.M.? And why is the tribal council trying to sell its land to developers? These questions are answered in the film. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE SWORD FIGHTING FILM !!.......2007-07-03

The Weinstein Company has to be commended for releasing "The One-Armed Swordsman" on DVD.The video and audio restoration that went into this release is truly amazing. The film is presented in it's 2.35:1 Widescreen format and enhanced for 16x9 televisions. This is without a doubt the best version of "The One-Armed Swordsman" I've ever seen. The video transfer is just spectacular and the colors are sharp and vibrant. The sound is clean and crisp albeit in mono. The sound options include original Mandarin or English dubbed version and choice of Subtitles. The special features I found most interesting were the Interview with Jimmy Wang Yu and the Stills Gallery and Trailer Gallery.Sadly the commentary of Quentin Tarantino listed on the rear cover under the special features section of the DVD is missing.Martial Arts fans will be amazed by the incredible quality of this release and the non-stop blood filled action.

3 out of 5 stars 5 stars for movie, 3 stars for release.......2007-06-22

OK if you have never seen this movie and are interested in classic kung-fu movies, by all means get this release, the quality is great. My complaint is that the Weinstein company lied about the special features. I already owned a great region 3 copy of this film, and was surprised to see that the new American release had commentary by Quentin Tarantino, which is stated on the package. I know that he is a big Shaw bros fan and was interested in hearing his insight on the film. I could care less about the film scholars opinions as they don't really state anything a fan wouldn't already know. Well the DVD does NOT have commentary by him, and my purchase was completely pointless. This review is to mainly to warn others out-there like myself who are huge fans that might also be considering purchasing this version for that reason.

First, a few facts. Dolph Lundgren expresses emotions ranging from stoic to, well, really stoic. There are holes in the story large enough to pilot the Exxon Valdez through without spilling a drop. And the film is littered with action movie clichés. But none of this matters. The Punisher succeeds because it stays true to its origins, the Marvel comic of the same name. Studio-engineered films such as Batman never quite capture the mixture of loyalty and betrayal, justice and revenge, moral ambiguity and emotional truth that are the hallmarks of the graphic novel. Films such as Darkman do. So does The Punisher. Lundgren plays Frank Castle, a dedicated policeman whose family was wiped out in a mob hit. He went underground (literally) and, as the Punisher, has been exacting his revenge, killing 125 mobsters in the past five years. But when the yakuza (Japanese Mafia) moves in on the mob's territory and kidnaps their children, it's up to the Punisher to rescue the kids. The action blazes, Lundgren (a former full-contact karate champ) moves with feral grace, the production design is a pleasure to watch, and director Mark Goldblatt (whose credits as editor include such big films as Starship Troopers and True Lies) has a clean, efficient style. --Geof Miller

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An earlier Punisher.......2007-06-11

I loved Thomas Jane's "Punisher", but my son told me an earlier one had been made a few years ago with Dolph Lundgren. I purchased it and found it to be even better. A bit of a darker version of the same story...told a bit differently. I enjoyed them both and suggest if you are a fan of the lastest one...definately get this one too, you'll find two different stories.

3 out of 5 stars Dolph Lundren AS Elvis...playing The Punisher..........2007-06-06

My first thoughts on this ? Dolph as a very pissed off Elvis Presley...playing The Punisher. The Yakuza ? Now didn't I see him go against the Yakuza in another action film? oh yes showdown in little tokyo, which I might add his co-star in that movie stole every scene he was in, een with some of the ridiculous dialogue they gave him.

All this aside? I'm giving it three stars because thier are a few scenes which are good and show just how dark the punisher really is, as he's being tortured by the yakuza and doesn't even care, even when they start torturing his contact in the "underworld" and probably saved his life by "not caring".

and then there's a strange little scene after castle is captured and they're going to electrocute him. Which was played well and shows that there is nothing "sane" when it comes to "The Punisher".

I think the people who really hate it and despise it with a passion aren't considering the budget or the YEAR this movie was made and the other movies that were coming out the same time this one was.

I picked this up for $5.50 and don't regret it at all. Although you haven't really seen "The Punisher" until you've seen The "Extended Cut" of the 2004 version.

4 out of 5 stars I really liked this film.......2007-01-18

Dolf Lungren truely captures the "Punisher". Although at times he seems stiff, it's still the punisher. Watching this movie I thought it captures the pain and anger better than the 2004 version.

4 out of 5 stars So much better than the 2004 version.......2005-11-14

This movie is so much better than the new 04 version. If Batman Begins
is the perfect adaptation from comic book character to big screen hero,
The Punisher (2004) is the perfect example of how to destroy a great
comic book character. The first thirty minutes are boring and
unoriginal. Whereas Christopher Nolan made good use of the first half
of Batman Begins to present a credible transition from rich man's son
to Dark Knight, Jonathan Hensleigh bores viewers to death by picturing
Frank Castle as the perfect American family man who then loses his
beautiful wife and perfect son in a cheap Mad Max rip off. In contrast,
the 1989 low budget but far superior version started off smack in the
middle of the action with a seriously disturbed ex cop already on the
rampage and the reason for his decline into madness was gradually
explained by means of flashbacks and memories form Louis Gousset Jr
trying to bring his old friend back into a sane life. But whereas the
comic book Punisher, brought to life by similarly huge 6' 6" Dolph
Lundgren in the first movie, becomes a bitter, meaner than hell, cold
blooded killer with no compassion whatsoever, the 04 Frank Castle turns
into your friendly neighborhood watchman who uses an ice cream cone to
"torture" his first victim. Batman Begins also has its share of humor,
but it is subtle and not out of place. The bad guys don't fare much
better. Whereas Jeroen Krabbe also had his share of trouble with the
Yakuza in the 80s version, at least he was a serious gangster not to be
taken lightly. John Travolta is a looser who can't stand his own
against other mobsters and is being pushed around by his wife. Message
to all Punisher fans: go rent the 1989 version or just stick to the
written word, but don't spent any money on this monstrosity which shows
no respect whatsoever to a great comic book series.

5 out of 5 stars Original and Best.......2005-10-24

Better then the 2004 version hands down. Dolph Lundgren plays the ultimate punisher, captures and delivers the story of an ice cold world that is "The Punisher". Just a great movie for this character, total classic.

Despite declining ratings and the constant threat of cancellation, the second season of Murder One was every bit as good as the first. With the addition of Anthony LaPaglia as a well-chosen replacement for departing series star Daniel Benzali (whose character, Teddy Hoffman, presumably retired from practicing law), the Los Angeles firm of Hoffman & Associates found itself with an able strategist in three compelling murder cases, unfolding over the course of 18 memorable episodes. LaPaglia (who would later star in Without a Trace) plays Jimmy Wyler, a former Deputy District Attorney whose defense methods (a combination of ethical conviction and legal manipulation) are challenged when he defends a young woman (Missy Crider) suspected of killing L.A.'s philandering mayor on the eve of reelection. With episodes (or "Chapters") 5 through 7, the season smoothly transitions to Wyler's defense of an NBA superstar (Rick Worthy) suspected of killing his team's owner. The third case begins with Chapter 13, when Wyler defends a bright but unstable serial killer (convincingly played by Pruitt Taylor Vince) nicknamed "The Street Sweeper" for self-righteously "executing" 17 ex-convicts who'd committed heinous crimes.

Superior production values, direction, and especially writing (much of it by series cocreators Steven Bochco and Charles Eglee) were seamlessly carried over from season 1, in addition to most of Murder One's excellent supporting cast. Along with temporarily replaced law-firm receptionist Louis Hines (John Fleck), Barbara Bosson returns as prosecutor Miriam Grasso, whose courtroom sparring with LaPaglia is consistently lively, smart, and strategically intriguing. Romance blossoms slowly but sensibly between Wyler and associate Justine Appleton (Mary McCormack), and the addition of new associate Aaron Mosely (D.B. Woodside, who later played the President's brother on 24) inspires a competitive edge between himself and fellow associates Chris Docknovich (Michael Hayden) and the smarmy, underachieving Arnold Spivak (played to perfection by J.C. MacKenzie). Clayton Rohner and Jack Kehler round out the cast as (respectively) L.A. Detective Vince Baggio and private investigator Frank Szymanski, who dig for facts that may, or may not, strengthen Wyler's defense. Throughout the season, guest stars like Ralph Waite (as a wealthy, threatening power broker), Ron Canada (a no-nonsense judge), Gregory Itzin (as L.A.'s scheming new mayor) and John Pleshette (as the comically sleazy Hollywood producer Gary Blondo) make vital contributions to the unfolding plots, with mysteries that are cleverly maintained for maximum viewer involvement.

Unfortunately, excellence did not translate into ratings. The morally complex Murder One was dealt a fatal blow when an extended hiatus was imposed after Chapter 12 was broadcast on January 23, 1997. Only the most loyal viewers saw the final six episodes of this truncated season, broadcast back-to-back over three nights the following May. By that time, the series' fate was sealed. Appropriately, the "Final Verdict: Season Two" featurette (the only bonus on these DVDs) functions as a bittersweet eulogy, with director Randy Zisk, producer/director Marc Buckland, and primary cast members (not including LaPaglia) praising all aspects of the show, and expressing fond memories for a series that brought out the best from everyone involved. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Earning overwhelming critical acclaim and numerous honors during its debut season -- including a 1996 People's Choice Award and a Golden Globe nomination for Outstanding Drama Series -- MURDER ONE returns for a second season of compelling courtroom drama. Co-created and executive produced by Steven Bochco, MURDER ONE will follow three riveting cases, beginning with an explosive political assassination that will have a major impact on the personal and professional of high-powered attorney James Wyler (portrayed by Anthony LaPaglia in his television series debut).

1 out of 5 stars No Benzali...Completely Different Show.......2007-06-30

Season One was Brilliant. While the supporting cast remained the same, the show was never close to the original.

A real disappoint in comparison. Not bad but it's like comparing a tricycle to a BMW. I guess they'll both get you there but there is a real difference in the ride.

Buy Season One.

5 out of 5 stars Murder One - Season Two.......2007-02-20

Excellent! The first two fast-paced cases keep your heart racing. The second half of Murder One season Two draws you in and forces you to ponder and contemplate - could I have done what this man did? Would I have repeated and repeated and justified my murders as he did? The touch of wry comedy with the elderly lady and her young spouse-to-be provided a rest for your over-worked heartbeat.
If you enjoy twists and turns; law and order; murder and sanctity, you will enjoy Murder One season Two.

2 out of 5 stars No Benzali, No Murder One.......2006-04-02

I remember originally watching season one and thinking "this is the most inspired television ever written." It was also perfectly cast. Daniel Benzali in Season One is pure magic as Ted Hoffman, as is the ever-perfect Stanley Tucci. Season One is like a perfectly choreographed ballet. Season two just couldn't pull it off. At the time, many of us abandoned ship the minute Daniel Benzali was "replaced." Buy Season One and forget Season two. It is indeed, forgettable.

2 out of 5 stars Season 2 Needs More Seasoning.......2006-03-15

I have to say I'm quite surprised at the accolades over season 2. Anthony LaPaglia is a fine enough actor in his own right but Benzali he ain't!!! The understated Benzali in my opinion WAS season one. Check out the Special Features of the season one DVD and watch DB get misty over the character...priceless!

Although I was hoping I'd get caught up in the follow on, I wasn't. I respect those who are enjoying the next chapter, it just wasn't for me.

The best network drama to debut in 1995 was Murder One, and the first season still packs a wallop. By sustaining a compelling mystery through 23 brilliantly written episodes (or "Chapters"), creators Steven Bochco, Charles H. Eglee, and Channing Gibson brought their stellar talents to a format that clearly inspired later shows like 24. Bearing no resemblance to Bochco's L.A. Law, the series presents Los Angeles as "a bucket of crabs," where superstar defense attorney Ted Hoffman (Daniel Benzali) tackles the high-profile case of Neil Avedon (Jason Gedrick), a bad-boy actor accused of strangling his 15-year-old girlfriend. As Hoffman and his savvy associates pursue the truth, it becomes obvious that wealthy entrepreneur Richard Cross (Stanley Tucci at his oily best) is manipulating the case, confounding Hoffman and the LAPD detective (Dylan Baker) who's sleuthing all the clues.

Every episode is crucial, and there's not a weak link in the entire supporting cast. Benzali bleeds charisma with his sotto voce dialogue and subtle moral conviction, holding forth in a sleazy den of Hollywood iniquity. It's a unique marriage of actor and character, and with so many talents on impressive display, Murder One rests squarely on Benzali's riveting performance. Subplots illustrate the heavy toll paid for Hoffman's legal passion; his wife (played to perfection by Patricia Clarkson) bears a taxing emotional burden. Barbara Bosson (then Bochco's wife) earned an Emmy nomination as the case's dogged prosecutor, and in addition to superb cast members Mary McCormack, J.C. MacKenzie, Michael Hayden, John Fleck, and Kevin Tighe, notable guest stars include Joe Spano, Brittany Murphy, Jena Elfman, Donna Murphy, and especially Bobbie Phillips as the murder victim's sister. Thanks to award-winning cinematography and high-class production design, Murder One remains one of the best-looking shows of its kind, a modern film noir with hidden truths in every shadow and threat-laden close-up.

DVD extras are minimal but worthwhile: Two commentaries (by Gedrick on "Chapter 8" and director Randy Zisk on "Chapter 15"), and a 10-year retrospective featurette including most of the primary cast. What's never mentioned is that Murder One suffered poor ratings against ER on Thursday nights, changed most of its cast and format in season 2, and was inevitably cancelled. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Whether you buy this to watch it for the first time, or to view it again as I did, this is a terrific DVD set. I had fogotten bits and pieces of it, so it was fun to see it again.

Stanley Tucci as the "evil incarnate" Richard Cross (his words, not mine) was superb.

I'm ordering Season Two, although Anthony LaPaglia replaces Daniel Benzali.

A friend was telling me about a TV show that came out about a decade ago called Murder One and how good it was. When I saw it on here for $17.99, I thought I would give it a try...and I was immediately hooked! This isn't necessarily for fans of 24 per se, but it's more of a 24-like format where the whole season is one case (as opposed to watching a TV show where each episode shows a different case and has to be wrapped up by the end of the hour). This allows for plot twists, great characters, and edge-of-your-seat suspense that makes you wonder WHODUNNIT? And how and why? And what makes this so good is the acting. Daniel Benzani is great at Teddy Hoffman, whether he's in lawyer mode or father mode. Jason Gedrick is equally amazing as Neil Avedon, the bad-boy actor whose emotions range from snotty, distraught, afraid, high, and suffering from drug withdrawal throughout the series. His acting gets better with each episode as his character is developed. There are other great performances with Dylan Baker as the LAPD Detective Artur Polson, Joe Spano as Hoffman's detective Ray Velacek, and all the lawyers in Hoffman's firm. However, I would give the best performance, hands down, to Stanley Tucci as Richard Cross, who plays this character to perfection! He was even nominated for an EMMY for this character and it's a shame he did not win. But as I said, this show has extremely good characters and acting, as well as terrific writing and great camera work. Exceptional show and highly recommended. Makes me want the networks to bring about another show like this. Heck, they could even call it Murder One. When done correctly, this is must-see TV!

5 out of 5 stars This is the real one........2007-05-12

If you are looking for a drama with realistic plot, excellent script and characteristic acting, this is the one.

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't Get Interested.......2007-04-06

I am a "24 Hour" fan so when I heard that this was the first or one of the first shows that was ever done in a "real time frame", I was very interested in it. I knew that it wouldn't be as good as "24" but I also didn't think it would be this bad. I could not tell that it was in "real" in time. It was jumping around a lot without connections to what had just been shown. I tried 2 times with about a month inbetween trials to become interested in it. I couldn't get past the first 2 shows either time. My teenagers who also like "24" tried to watch "Murder One" and also couldn't get into it. Right now, I'm selling it on e-bay in order to see if I can get at least some of my money back. Wouldn't you know it? No one is bidding on it. "Murder One" is uninteresting, doesn't appear to follow "real time" and is a total waste of money. I'm thankful I didn't purchase it as a gift for some one or I really would have been upset. Save your money and purchase something else..."24" if you aren't already a fan. But just about anything would be better than this.
