The whole world is watching--literally--every time Truman Burbank makes the slightest move. Unbeknownst to him, in this hauntingly funny film by Peter Weir, his entire life has been an unending soap opera for consumption by the rest of the world. And everyone he knows--including his mother, his wife, and his best friend--is really an actor, paid to be part of his life. In this intriguing and surprisingly touching 1998 film, writer Andrew Niccol imagines an ultimate kind of celebrity, then sees it brought to life with comic intensity and emotional honesty by Jim Carrey in what may be the performance of his career. Carrey has exceptional support from Laura Linney and Ed Harris, but it's his show, in a portrayal that demonstrates just what kind of range Carrey is capable of. --Marshall Fine

The Story Of A Lifetime.......2007-06-03
Jim Carrey wanted to prove, like Robin Williams, that he could do drama just as well as comedy. Well he did it in a big way.
How funny is it that this film almost shows what the stars of Hollywood go through? Carrey was wonderful as the lead character Truman, showing the world he can do both comedy and drama.
I'm still pissed off the that Oscars didn't even give him an nomination he deserved. Another great proformance in the film was by Ed Harris as the creator of the show, showcasing Truman's life 24/7.
This is probably my all-time favourite proformances by Carrey (note I haven't seen Spotless Mind yet) and I recommand it to anyone who's a fan of the actor and of the gerne.
True Man Show.......2007-05-02
The Truman Show (1998) directed by Peter Weir is a story of an ordinary man who does not know that he is a star of a long running show that started on the day he was born and depicts every smallest detail of his life in a picture perfect small town of Seahaven for all world to see. Everything and everybody around him is not real, including his family, his friends, his job, and the whole world that seems so friendly and familiar. The ultimate irony is in his name - he is the only TRUE man among the actors.
Jim Carrey's performance is a revelation and it is still a mystery for me why he was overlooked by the Academy of Motion Pictures that year and was not rewarded for his superlative work. He's been helped by Laura Lynney and Ed Harris (great performance). The true star of the movie is Peter Weir's directing - he is the real Creator of this "theater of absurd".
The Truth about Truman Burbank.......2007-03-17
Wherefore art though Truman? Truman Burkbank is the main character played by Jim Carrey in this, his most memorable role besides the Mask. Jim won the Golden Globe for Best Actor but was never nominated for an Oscar for this ground breaking role. What a shame because he is Truman and Truman is him. The sign of great acting is when you really, really care about the character.
This is a film with many layers. The casual viewer will enjoy it for its oddball humour and quirky characters. At a deeper level there are parallels for how we as human beings live our lives. There is a innate hunger for feeling alive. Joseph Campbell said that we're mistaken when we think we are searching for meaning. Meaning is your head, its intellectual, but feeling is the whole body. And Truman through his escapades is searching for that feeling of being alive. And there is a girl that was removed from the Truman Show in his youth that drives his magnificent obsession. He gets thwarted by the omniscient Christoff, brilliantly played by Ed Harris, the creator of the Truman Show. And this eventually leads to a face-off which is one of the most spiritual moments ever recorded in cinematic history. The ending of this film almost always brings a tear to my eye because I can feel Truman's pain and his hunger for more. More than what's visible, more than what is allowed. And he finally gives himself permission to go into the unknown.
Spiritual allegory or just a good story? .......2007-02-16
The 1998 film The Truman Show (directed by Peter Weir) narrates the life of Truman Banks (Jim Carrey), who is unaware that his entire life on the island of Seahaven is completely constructed by a TV crew, and is part of a constantly running reality television program called The Truman Show, watched by millions 24/7 world-wide. But when Truman comes to realize that something is strange about his world, he makes plans to escape his artificially manipulated universe.
The premise is a clever one, and the film succeeds on the level of story alone. But what's particularly of interest to this reviewer are the profound philosophical and religious questions that the movie seems to ask. Not only does it raises age-old philosophical questions common in the field of epistemology, concerning what we can know about reality (e.g. could I be deceived about what my senses and experiences are telling me about reality?), but it also appears to explore many deep religious questions by means of allusions to Christian themes. Consider how the TV producer Christof (= Christ of) is the "creator" of Truman (= True Man), and functions as a god who controls his world. The symbolism seems too strong to ignore, and as a result, particularly in Christian circles where this imagery cannot go unnoticed, there is considerable debate about the worldview behind the film, and whether it is intended to portray an atheistic or Christian worldview. Reviewers typically fall into one of two camps:
a) those who see it as a secular film, by portraying the Christian God as a cruel and harsh dictator who operates a deterministic universe from which we need to escape by rejecting God. According to this view, Truman's liberation is a depiction of the Fall, and promotes an atheistic lifestyle of rebellion against the Creator and an escape from Eden. Others have tried to be more charitable by interpreting it in line with Calvinistic theology, suggesting that the film depicts the tragedy rather than the triumph of sin, but this is implausible in view of how the Creator is portrayed negatively and how the final liberation is presented so positively.
b) those who see it as a criticism of secularism, by suggesting that Satan creates an artificial world for us, from which we need to escape by converting to the truth. According to this view, Truman's liberation promotes the need to escape the deception of Satan (the anti-Christ), and exchange it for a life lived in service to the true God. Some have even seen it as giving a positive message about Christianity, for if Seahaven represents an illusionary man-made Paradise, then Truman's decision to leave this old world behind is symbolic of a conversion experience, and he represents a Christ-like figure who models the way of salvation.
The first view interprets The Truman Show as a story of the Fall, where Christoff symbolizes the true God, and Sylvia (who encourages Truman to escape his "world") is a serpent-tempter figure that brings rebellion. The second view interprets The Truman Show as a story of Redemption, where Christoff symbolizes an anti-Christ, and Sylvia is an intercessor that brings freedom in contrast to the Judas figure Marlon. Proponents of both views have engaged in considerable debate over these two interpretations, the former which sees the Truman Show as a secular existentialist film, the latter which sees it as a pro-Christian film.
Certainly the rich symbolism in the film lends itself to an interpretation which gives the Christological imagery throughout the film a more important meaning than mere allusion. But neither of the above explanations is entirely satisfactory or consistent. Because how can Truman be a rebel who rejects God, and at the same time a Christ-like figure (he is depicted as crucified in the boat, and at the end walks on water and ascends into a stairway of heaven)? And how can Christoff be representative of a deterministic creator, and at the same time an anti-Christ? A consistent allegorical interpretation fails in its application, and should already be a hint that one is not intended.
Perhaps the best solution is one which is neither overly critical nor overly charitable with respect to the Biblical imagery, but sees this as subordinate to other themes about the media and television, without forcing a simplistic choice demanded by a polarized approach. Director Peter Weir has gone on record in more than one interview that the film is about television. Weir is of this conviction: "My attitude to television, personally, is too much of it is a bad thing." According to Weir: "And that's really at the heart of what the film looks at in a major way - this disturbance to our perception of reality, as a result of the immense entertainment and actuality coming at us, to the point where you can't differentiate anymore. News programs that are entertaining; video everywhere." Given Weir's remarks, I believe that the Truman Show is essentially a sharp criticism of the dangers of a false reality cultivated by the media, and a warning against losing our sense of reality.
Clearly Weir has chosen to portray the director Christoff as a creator figure very deliberately, but he does not use this image to push a religious agenda, but to give a social commentary about problems created by the modern media, which blurs the lines between appearance and reality. In that regard, his analysis of television is spot on and speaks to our time: to what extent is our perception of the world the result of manipulation by the media? And do we need to be liberated from the artificial reality of a TV world and return to the real world? I see this explanation (advocated also by Andrew H. Trotter) as more plausible than one which sees the film as a simple spiritual allegory, or which interprets it as an indictment on reality television (note that the release of the movie predates much of the contemporary fascination with reality TV shows).
In short, the Truman Show is defending neither an atheist or a Christian worldview, but it merely employs Biblical themes and allusions as servants to its real theme and social commentary about the media and television. It has to be conceded that both Christoff's and Truman's characters have clear Christological symbolism, but the film is ambiguous about which of the two is to be identified as the Christ figure simply because it doesn't want us making a choice between them. Although the religious symbolism is too strong to ignore, in the end it is subordinate to the more central theme about the role of television and media in our culture, and is a means to an end rather than an end in itself. Consequently in my view, it's a mistake to see the film either as an attack on Christianity, or as a tool for evangelism. That's not to say that the film doesn't raise interesting parallels on a religious levels - certainly it can stimulate interesting discussion both about how God the Creator watches over us (cf. Psalm 139), as well as how the Satan the father of lies deceives us. Ironically, the Truman Show has created its own deception - while appearances suggest it is a spiritual allegory, a closer look suggests that this perception is merely an illusion. - GODLY GADFLY

Im a big fan of jim carreys movies but this movie was not funny it's not entertaining it's just about the whole world watching a guy's normal boring life on tv every single day which he has no clue since the day he was born (how sad) til all of a sudden he finds out that his whole life was a huge lie and his family and friends were just professional actors he escapes at the end and see's the real world for the first time (which it doesn't show) after 30 years of wasted living. Alot of people loved this movie but I really don't see anything good about it. I like jim carrey in really funny movies not movies like these.

Description
Professor Davidson and his lovely daughter Diana search Africa for the Lost City of Zoloz. Legend pegs it to be the source of a vast hidden treasure. Fortunately, the Phantom, who is also Diana's fiancé, is more than a match for the two villains. The Phantom, with his superhuman strength, manages to outwit each enemy move, escaping from one death trap after an other: avalanches, poison gas, flaming pyres, and explosions fail to shake his fearless spirit. Five Star Phantom.......2007-02-18
I'm a big Phantom fan so I may be biased but I thought this was great stuff. This took me back to my childhood. I saw the serial when I was a kid in the fifties and it's still great over 50 years later. They could have made his costume a bit better but apart from that a great adventure. My teenage kids loved this too, which is saying something.
Bringing back childhood memories.......2007-01-04
Really enjoyed this serial. I'm 56, and can still remember going to the Pitt theatre on saturday mornings to catch the serials. Watching the Phantom brings back a time before America lost it's commom sense and the phrase "politically correct" wasn't heard of.
the phantom.......2006-11-07
MOVIE WAS MADE FROM A GOOD COPY.PICTURE WAS VERY CLEAR AND CLEAN.THE STORY FOLLOWS THE ORIGINAL PREMISE VERY CLOSELY.ALL IN ALL IT'S A FUN SERIAL TO WATCH.
Fast-paced and watchable.......2006-08-08
I grew up reading Phantom cartoons. This video series shows a different Phantom. First, there is no horse named Hero. Phantom of this video is not as strong as in the cartoon. However, these are not major issues for me.
I had a huge problem with the Professor. He does not care about his fellow men, only interested in his pursuit of the Zoloz ruins. I was truly disgusted to hear him say that the wealth of the Zoloz tribes belongs to his sponsor University! What nonsense! Even Phantom was no better. He realized that the jewels in his skull cave are the treasures of the Zoloz, but did not consider returning them to the tribes! In my dictionary, this is thievery.
The Ghost Who Walks.......2006-01-09
This is based on Lee Falk's popular comic strip, "The Phantom," who was known as "The Ghost Who Walks," in purple tights yet. Columbia usually had independent producers do its serials but this one was actually produced by Columbia, taking advantage of the studio's extensive facilities. In a world where the best serials were made by Republic, Columbia was second-best. This certainly one of their very best.
Tom Tyler ("Adventures of Captain Marvel") is an excellent Phantom, and B. Reeves "Breezy" Eason, formerly with Republic, did a great job of directing. Frank Shannon must have matured as an actor, because he's much better here than in the Flash Gordon series. Jeanne Bates signed with Columbia in 1942, and was probably best known to aficionados of horror flicks. She had a long movie career, mostly in smaller parts.
One of the best features of this DVD is the first-chapter narration of Max Allen Collins, the writer who took over the Dick Tracy comic strip when Chester Gould retired. He places "The Phantom" in historical context and really sets the scene to help you enjoy the movie. Be sure to see it before going beyond Chapter One.

Is this supposto be funny? 0/5 stars.......2007-01-25

John Ford remains the consensus choice as America's greatest director, and his critical eminence dates from two films in this set. By 1934 he had been directing for 17 years, building a solid reputation as a Hollywood professional with maybe the best eye in the movie business. With The Lost Patrol (1934) and The Informer (1935)--made for RKO rather than his accustomed studio base, Fox--he took a decisive step toward establishing himself as a personal, at least semi-independent artist. Both films were stark dramas free of box-office compromise, glib heroics, or any expectation of facile happy endings. They were also more relentlessly stylized than anything Ford had done before ... which both distinguished them in their day and left them vulnerable to dating when some of their experimentation proved rather dead-ended.
The Lost Patrol began Ford's association with producer Merian C. Cooper, a partnership that would lead to the independent production company Argosy and the making of such fine, ultrapersonal films as The Quiet Man, The Searchers, and Ford's celebrated cavalry trilogy. The story, by Philip MacDonald, concerns a handful of British soldiers cornered at an oasis in the Mesopotamian Desert (now Iraq) during World War I and slowly decimated by an unseen enemy. The strong visuals--baking sun, the undulating vastness of the dunes, the drift of ghostly mirages--befit a crucible of character-testing, with an unnamed Sergeant (Victor McLaglen) striving to keep at least one man alive as desperation, madness, and implacable Arab snipers take their toll. This DVD release restores six minutes of footage cut for a 1949 rerelease and rarely seen since.
Ford won the first of his four best-director Oscars for The Informer, an intense tale of "one night in strife-torn Dublin, 1922" when a slow-witted I.R.A. strongman named Gypo Nolan sells out his best friend for 20 British pounds. On a budget that obliged him to obscure canvas sets with deep shadows and a persistent fog that underscores Gypo's mental and spiritual confusion, Ford created a visual world akin to the German Expressionist classics of the 1920s. But the film's inventive use of sound and an ambitious music score (by Max Steiner) commingling leitmotifs for half a dozen key characters also encouraged '30s critics to hail it as the first classic of the sound era. That was overstating it (and more than a little amnesiac on the critics' part!). Overstated, too, was Ford's relentless Christ symbolism paralleling Gypo's betrayal to that of Judas. Still, Victor McLaglen's portrayal of the title character remains a triumph (McLaglen won an Oscar as well), and the film abounds in brilliant strokes: the silhouette of a British soldier shining his flashlight on the wanted poster of Gypo's friend, while Gypo lurks just outside the beam; the giant Nolan forever knocking his head on hanging signs or seeming to be crushed by low ceilings; the cacophony of cries and gunfire, and then crashing silence, as the Black and Tan raid the I.R.A. rebel's home. Initially overrated, then relegated to museum status, The Informer awaits rediscovery as a dynamic motion picture.
The John Ford Collection includes one more mid-'30s RKO endeavor, Mary of Scotland (1936). Although handsome, this adaptation of a Maxwell Anderson blank-verse play about Queen Elizabeth's northern rival never finds credible footing as a movie. Andrew Sarris is dead right in lamenting Ford's version of Mary, Queen of Scots, as "a madonna of the Scottish moors"--Katharine Hepburn, inevitably. The most interesting thing about the production is the offscreen story, that Ford and Hepburn fell passionately in love, yet (perhaps) resisted becoming lovers.
From there we leap to the 1960s and two Westerns made under the aegis of Warner Bros. (Warner now owns the RKO library, hence this rather arbitrary set.) Sergeant Rutledge (1960) has markedly improved with age, with what once seemed creaky dramaturgy now playing as bold stylization. Using a jagged flashback structure occasioned by a court-martial at a Southwest outpost, Ford took an unflinching look at the legacy of race in America. The then-unknown black actor Woody Strode has a showcase role as a magnificent "Buffalo soldier" accused of the rape-murder of his commanding officer's blond, white daughter and the murder of the commandant himself. Unfortunately, Ford's once-masterly handling of character actors had grown lax, and he indulged some tedious bombast from Willis Bouchey and Carleton Young as the presiding judge and prosecutor, respectively; and Jeffrey Hunter, however effective in The Searchers, made a weak protagonist as Rutledge's defense counsel. But the veteran cameraman Bert Glennon almost winds things back to Stagecoach days, occasionally turning the film's Technicolor to very nearly black and white.
Another debt to race relations is addressed in Cheyenne Autumn (1964), a beautiful title to grace John Ford's final Western. The film has moments of grandeur as Ford attempts at long last to "tell the story from the Indians' point of view," and it's a pleasure to report that William H. Clothier's majestic Technicolor compositions have been restored to their Panavision dimensions on the DVD. Ford is unambiguously supportive of the Cheyennes' resolve to bolt their reservation in the desert Southwest and trek north to their ancestral lands. By contrast, most of white society, the military, the bureaucracy, and the sensationalist press are portrayed as insensitive, foolish, or hateful. However, the Cheyenne are nobly wooden, with all key roles played by non-Indians: Ricardo Montalban, Gilbert Roland, Sal Mineo, Victor Jory, and Dolores Del Rio (breathtakingly beautiful as ever). As for point of view, it's sympathetic cavalry officer Richard Widmark and Quaker missionary Carroll Baker through whose eyes most of the epic narrative unfolds. --Richard T. Jameson

Five from Mr. Fenny aka John Ford.......2007-03-21
I agree with one reviewer that "The Hurricane" should have been included. Also, "Three Bad Man" and "The Iron Horse" need to be accessed but they very likely still belong to Fox. My take on the films here:
"The Lost Patrol" Victor McLaglen and Boris Karloff made an odd team indeed. McLaglen has led this patrol to somewhere in North Africa and he has to thankless job to hold his men together to maintain his own sense of sanity. Karloff already lost his and there's really not much anyone can do until the rest of the troops find them. Almost ten years later, Bogart would star with an all male cast in "Sahara", but the outcome would be different. Kurasawa may have been influeneced with the simple graves at the end as he used graves to an even more haunting ending in the "Seven Samurai".
"The Informer" As mentioned in the extras, Ford was very influenced with German Impressionism and loved "Sunrise" that starred George O'Brien, Ford's early star in the above mentioned silent westerns. So, it could be said that this Irish tale is actually a film noir, years before its name was ever invoked. Very sad to watch as the viewer clearly sees that poor Gypo doesn't know what he's doing. This is clearing the best film of this lot and stands as one of the best films Ford has ever done. Very catholic, too, as the poor lad dies forgiven. Kudos to the rest of the cast as well.
"Mary of Scotland" There is actually to lot to like about this movie. After all, this stars Katherine Hepburn who gives great a regal performance not too different from all the other roles she's done. This also costars Fredrick March, who appeared in many high brow movies in this time period. The language is rich but is guilty of being too wordy. It's interesting to compare this to other costume drams that starred actresses of this time period, such as Marlene Dietrich "The Scarlett Empress", (my favorite), Greta Garbo "Queen Christina" (a masterpiece, but it bombed at the time), Norma Shearer "Marie Antoninette" and Bette Davis who got away with several, including two in which she played Elizabeth I.
"Sergeant Rutledge" This is intentionally an umcomfortable film to watch and the same theme was much more sucessful in "To Kill A Mockingbird", made just a year later. It must be said that Woody Strode was a very stiff actor. He was such a demanding presense that he usually was given little or no lines in the movies he appeared. Here, he's the title character, a black man accursed of raping and strangling a white woman. After different viewpoints are shown in flashback, he's called upon to give a speech in which he does say the n word. I actually don't have much problem with Jeffrey Hunter. The guy did what he's supposed to do, but Montgomery Cliff he wasn't. He suffered the same kind of blandness John Agar had. It was the Perry Mason type ending, which was a hit show back then, that I have a problem with. The guilty party confesses only because his conscious bothers him. It's simply not believable.
"Cheyenne Authumn" I actually like this film. True, Gilbert Roland, Ricardo Montaban, Sal Mineo and Dolores del Rio weren't actually native Americans but they wouldn't weren't bad at playing them. Ricard Widmark is between a rock and a hard place when he reluntuntly leads the natives. There's also the Quaker love interest played by Carole Baker. There's tension in every meeting they have. I must commend Ford for having the "got to kill me an Indian" scene. Natives ride up to whites begging for food and one gets murdered and scalped in the process. This is quickly followed with Ford satirizng himself. The killer gets accidently shot, then relunctantly treated by a poker playing Wyatt Earp, played by James Stewart. Then we get the Indians trapped by Karl Marden, who claims he knows all about Indians due to all the books he got about them, most in German. Widmark sneaks off to get Edward G. Robinson and they both get to save the Indians from slaughter for the time being. This is a sad movie to watch but there is much to appreciate here. It was a brave film to make in 1964.
Where s WAGONMASTER?:.......2006-12-22
Would have been a much better set with a few other classic s.
Mixed Bag...Mostly Disappointing.......2006-11-26
It's as if they reached their hand into a bowl w/ all of John Ford's non-John Wayne and non-Henry Fonda titles written on ping pong balls and drew out five at random. There's no rhyme or reason to these five movies from the beginning and end of Ford's illustrious career to be grouped together and the wide variety of subject matter and quality atttest to this.
1. The Informer: An excellent morality play about a ratfink in the IRA. Tightly scripted and well acted. Won four Academy Awards including statuettes for star McLaglen and director Ford. Easily the best of the bunch.
2. Mary of Scotland: Ford had the hots for Katherine Hepburn and, story goes, the feeling was mutual. Ford lost interest in the dull script and the movie shows the listlessness of a slack production.
3. The Lost Patrol: The other gem of the group. A detachment of soldiers get lost and wander the desert as they are picked off one by one. Not a great movie by any means but it is interesting to watch Boris Karloff of Frankenstein's monster fame play a religious nut.
4. Cheyenne Autumn: Well intentioned but awful movie. An aging and purhaps slightly senile Ford careens wildly all over the place as he tries to show the settling of the American West from the Native Americans point of view. He uses white actors to portray Native Americans, thus undermining his own point. There is a long and bafflingly irrelevant middle scene with James Stewart playing the least convincing Wyatt Earp in any movie ever.
5. Sergeant Rutledge: Another well-intentioned mess. Ford tries to show the African-American Buffalo Soldier experience. Kudos for making a Western with a black star, Woody Strode. Alas, Strode is willing but the script is weak. Ford seems to have felt the need to lighten the mood with silly jokes and comic relief. Why? He does the same thing in many other movies, most notably The Searchers, and it never works right. Like his forced macho roughhousing in The Wings of Eagles, Donovan's Reef and The Calvary Trilogy. It ends up being filler that detracts and lessens the excellence of the story.
John Ford Collection... WOW.......2006-07-27
Perfect condition, arrived on time. Two of the movies I have searched for two of the movies in the collection for many years. I am SO HAPPY!
AMERICA'S GREATEST DIRECTOR!.......2006-06-10
The John Ford collection is a set of vintage Ford films, without John Wayne while and I would NOT have included Mary of Scotland, and would have preferred either The Plough and the Stars,or The Fugitive (Henry Fonda)or the underrated Two Rode Together, this is still a very good film set. There is a separate Ford-Wayne collection, which I will review latter. The five films,in this collection are: The Lost Patrol; The Informer;Cheyenne Autumn:Mary of Scotland:Sergeant Rutledge: The following are my reviews of each individul film.
1.THE LOST PATROL-TENSE ANTI-WAR CLASSIC!*****
A British army Patrol, during the time of WW1, in the Mesopotamian desert gets lost, after their commander is killed, and he has left no notes or orders,in regard to their mission or exact location. With
their leader dead the small group's command falls to Sergeant Victor McLaglen. After a journey of unknown length, the patrol finds an oasis, and it is here where most of the action takes place as they are pinned down by (mostly unseen) Arab fighters. It is here where we really get to meet the men and get to know their hopes and fears. The other men include J.M.Kerrigan(as Quincannn-probably the most frequently used name in a Ford film!),Reginald Denny (Brown),Wallace Ford( excellent as Moretti),Boris Karloff,(,outstanding as Sanders-a religious fanatic),and Douglas Walton,as callow youth, who when he leaves for the service he relates that that was the ONLY time he saw his mother cry. This is (to me) one of the dramtic highlight so the film, when we see 19 year old Walton(about 25,in real life) pours his heart out to McLaglen. This scene, even more so than others shows the futility of war. Great direction,a great screenplay(Dudley Nichols,Ford's favorote writer,at the time-THE INFORMER-STAGECOACH),a fine Max Steiner score, and an excellent DVD transfer. A GREAT ANTI-WAR AND(mildly) ANTI-IMPERIALIST FILM,AND A MUST SEE!
MARY OF SCOTLAND:KATHERINE HEPBURN-FREDRIC MARCH **1/2
Katherine Hepburn,in her only Ford film,is Mary, Queens of Scots. This motion picture is derived from a Maxwell Anderson Play, and a screenplay by Dudley Nichols. To me of what I've seen of Ford's thirties films,"Mary of Scotland" it is Ford's least-good films of the period.Watchable, but forgettable. Two and one half stars.
THE INFORMER:VICTOR MCLAGLEN'S FINEST HOUR *****
The story of "the troubles",in Ireland, in told in a very somber way in the John Ford classic "The Informer",with Victor McLaglen(a Ford regular)giving an AA winning performance in the title role.McLaglen plays Gypo Nolan,a down and out Dubliner, who is without money, and because of this and having been recently "dismissed" from the IRA(Irish Republican Army'freedom fighters, hoping to obtain a united and totally free Ireland, with no British ties whatsoever) and because he is also in jeopardy of losing his girlfried Margot Grahame,(outstanding)as he is in a greatly strained emotional state, and when wondering the streets comes upon a reward poster for "IRA murderer"Frankie McPhillip(Wallace Ford-no relation to the director). The reward is worth enough so that both Gypo and his girl can get passage to America.A short while latter Gypo accidentally runs into Frankie,an old friend, and they have a short conversion about Frankie being on the run,how Frankes's mother is,and the reasons why Gypo was "sacked" from the(in this coversion a "Quincannon" is mentioned) IRA,after the conversion ends the wheels start to turn in Gypo's head and he wonders over to the "Black and Tans"station(the Black and Tans,so-called becuse of their uniforms, are special British militiary(police)men assigned to Ireland when "the troubles" are at their height,""Up the Irish" or in this film,"Up the Rebels" types may look at the B&T's as THE REAL TERRORISTS,but that's for another discussion)and reluctanly tells the "Brits" that Frankie will be at his mother's.After Frankie is killed in a shoot-out,Gypo is given disdainfully(even the B&T's don"t like Informers) his money and goes.Drinking, fighting, and partying are on the night's program for Gypo, but his drining is only a mask,to hide his emotional breakdown from his wicked deed. The IRA figures out what went on,in regard to Frankie's death, and Gypo is a doomed man!
Other supporting members of the cast are very good to excellent,J.M.Kerrigan,Preston Foster,Donald Meek,Joseph (then Sauers)Sawyer, and Una'Connor as Frankie's mother who is a bite "over the top" early in the film, but comes through poignanly at the coclusion. From a LiamO'Flaherty story,an excellent Dudley Nichols screenplay, with a haunting Max Steiner musical score, and a very crisp and clear DVD transfer. The ONLY MINUS NO DVD COMMETARY-A MUST SEE!!
CHEYENNE AUTUMN-DESPITE FLAWS ALMOST A CLASSIC ****
Ignoring "Fort Apache",and the anti-racism of "The Searchers",many critics (falsely) claim that John Ford set an anti-Native American(Indian) tone in films that increased racism in America.Well, whatever truth there is to either side of the argument is,in this film John Ford,in his last Western,is FIRMLY on the Indians side. But is was still (somewhat justified)critised fom casting,in VERY IMPORTANT roles none-Idians,especially The Victor Jory,Gilbert Roland,Richardo Montalban,Dolores Del Reo,and Sal Mineo(!)roles.
This motion picture tells the true story of the Cheyenne's plight at the hand of "THE GREAT FATHER" and their trek, and persuit(by U.S.troops) back to their Yellowstone homeland.
On the minus side is the appearrance of Carroll Baker(miscast) as a Quaker school marm) and Karl Malden, with an"over the top performance" as a muderous, racist American(German born) General. The screenplay by James Webb(Pork Chop Hill,The Big Country,Cape Fear) is lacklustre, and the comic interlude of Jimmy Stewart(as Wyatt Earp) with Arthur KennedyI"Doc" Holliday) and John Carradine(a dishonest gambler) and a bunch of hooligian ,led by Ken Curtis is out of place, and NOT VERY FUNNYI did lke Elizebeth Allen, was a damsel of ill-repute.This is a heart-felt film by John Ford with good performances by Richard Widmark as a "liberal" U.S. "horse soldier",and LaBaker's love interest, and in a cameo Edward G.Robinson.The musical score by Alex North is OK,but I would have preferred Elmer Bernstein. An An excellent DVD transfer.Despite my misgivings,4 stars.
SERGEANT RUTLEDGE-ANTI RACIST CLASSIC WESTERN *****
In this unheralded John Ford anti-racist Western, set in 1881,Sergeant Braxton Rutledge(Woody Stode) is accussed of rape and murder, and mostly in flashbacks the events of his accusation, his fleeing, and trial are told. The pace is perfect and acting and direction excellent. In his third Ford film Jeffery Hunter proves again that he was a very underrated actor. His performance is excellent, also good are Constance Towers,as Hunter's love interest and Braxton sympathizer,Willis Bouchey(a Ford grouchy regular),Juano Hernandez,Routledge's fellow "Buffalo Soldier",and sort of "father figure".for the rest of the black soldier's,and Charleton Young(another Ford regular) as the intentially racist prosecutor. But it is Strode(a Ford regular,in support roles) who carries the film. His pride and dignity are evident, in every scene in which he appears. There re two ways to look at this film,or more properly to look at Hollywood, either this film was way ahead of its time or Hollywood took to long to look at U.S. race relations,in any meaning manner. The anti-racists films,of Hollywood, did not really start to make an appearance until the late 1940's,with films such as "PINKY" and the 1950 film debut of Sidney Poitier in "NO WAY OUT"(see my review)My opinion is "so-called liberal Hollywood"(remember the blacklist) was and is always interested IN PROFITS,and NOT PREACHING!.
A GREAT FILM by "AMERICA'S GREATEST DIRECTOR!!
Excellent DVD transfer,but no commetary.5-stars!!

EXCELLEnt movie worth seeing.......2006-07-15
PAloma de papel is a very hearttouching story about the lives of poor andean peruvian ppl. It is a story form a child's point of view about terrorism and its many consequences. At the end of the movie i cried the hardest i have ever cried in my life no joke. Amovie that as intense as it is, is a family movie and teahces kids the danger of terrorism adn how many ppl get into it for neccesity.
Amazing film, a glimpse of life 1st world folks don't get to see...........2005-12-26
palomar de papel is an amazingly, touching story about a young boy, his deep relationship w/ his nurturing mama, and the realities of life in the U.S. exploited countries of Latin America.
This movie is endearing because it shows the humanities of all sides. I LOVE that it shows glimpses of the humble, yet loving and beautiful life of so-called "common" peasants of the Andean Peru. The sweet relationships that this little boy, Juan, develops w/ the members of his town, and the mischievious and funny ways he and his little friends find to entertain themselves in their mountainside, non-industrialized lives.
The abduction of Juan by the Shining Path is gripping, and to be honest--AWFUL to watch. I hated the hardships they this little boy endured, but i appreciate the fact that it's real and this film shows the realness from all sides.
The film depicts the communists as, on one hand seeking reasonable demands--end to poverty and exploitation, freedom and self determinatino. It also reflects the hard realities that most people reading this review may never have to face--like, it's easy to say "oh, i'd never do this or that", but, when you've watched your entire homes burned down, mothers father killed, etc., people's perspective about what their options often change.
Therefore, the shinig path characters are depicted as making some pretty inhumane mistakes, but I think by the end you may feel that possibly, they are just struggling to find answers to the same questions millions are also facing, though clearly -_how_ they are going about (i.e. armed, guerrilla warfare gonig up against women and children, the very people they supposedly were fighting for) it did not prove beneficial to either side.
It's tough, and hard to watch, but excellent film, excellent acting and production, and very sweet message given at the final scene. This would also be excellent to view from an anthropological and/or sociological perspective.
Excellent, very worth seeing .......2005-05-02
This is an excellent film. It is probably the first Peruvian film to portray Andean peasants as the main protagonists. Paloma de Papel, that focuses on a peasant village's association with and fight against Peru's notorious terrorist organization and Partido Comunista del Peru-SL, best known as The Shining Path, is a perfect complement to Francisco Lombardi's classic La Boca del Lobo (The Lion's Den, 1988). Whereas in Lombardi's film the militaries were both the main protagonists and the main perpetrators of the abuses against the peasants, in Paloma de Papel peasants take the lead while the Shining Path is the main executioner. However, far from falling into clichéd interpretations that would pit "bad terrorists" against "good peasants", director Fabrizio Aguilar manages to show the humanity and vulnerability of both. He shows moreover how peasants, far from merely being caught in the cross fire, could deliberately take sides. Paloma de Papel constitutes an intelligent and sensitive portrayal of a complex topic: peasants' ultimate fight against the Shining Path insurgency that shook Peru between 1980 and 1999 and which ultimately claimed 70,000 lives, most of them poor and illiterate Andean peasants. This film is likely to stir debates and may be misunderstood by those who have romanticized Latin American Marxist guerrillas or still think that armed solutions to social problems are morally and politically justified. A very human film. Excellent performances by both adults and children. Shot in a village in the Andean department of Ancash. Amazing landscapes.
Piece of crap!.......2005-03-24
Paloma de papel (Paper dove) is really a piece of crap. It explores the over explored world of terrorist from a childs point of view... Director Fabrizio Aguilar, is nothing more than a spoiled child trying to show how much he knows about the live of the poor people in peru, When in fact he doesn't know anything about it. Having grew up in private (Expensive) schools and lived in Miraflores (A residential city in Peru) He should be directing commercials for those expensive products or even better, still acting in the lame soap operas in which que used to act.

Description
ANDRÉS is an adolescent forced into manhood by two important events; the Spanish Civil war, which separates him from his mother and takes him to the front in search of her, and a very elegant roll in the hay with a charming and highly seductive COUNTESS (Faye Dunaway), shortly after his arrival there. Thus begins Andrés own personal battle with the female sex, a battle which will last far longer than the military hostilities between Republicans (with whom Andres fights) and Fascist which tear him apart from his mother only to throw him into the arms of a series of mature lovers who between them will guide him through the minefield and adult life. Andrés is given a chance to follow up on his erotic and sentimental adventure with the Countess when his Sergeant sends him home from the trenches, the execution of two prisoners being too much for the young man to bear. Having no home to go to, however, Andrés is sent to the Sergeant's house in Barcelona where JULIA (Ingrid Rubio), the Sergeant's stunning daughter, will carry out her very own kind of blitzkrieg on Andrés' senses.

Description
Jules Verne's landmark novel gains a fantastic new life in a tropical Hawaiian setting when a young, strong-willed English nanny accidentally joins two vacationing brothers exploring a cave on a deserted stretch of beach. Shortly after they enter, a volcanic eruption rocks the cave, opening a crack which turns out to be an ancient path downward. Short of water, food and daylight, the explorers use their sense of humor to keep their spirits up as they uncover an array of incredible and often dangerous discoveries. But nothing can prepare them for the ultimate discovery - the real city of Atlantis. Often idealized as paradise, the mythic civilization turns out to be anything but.

Great outdoor scenes, and a good movie ...............2007-02-13
Maybe this 1959 version did not have a big budget like the other version with
Pat Boone, but after seeing again, i was pleasently surprise but some of
the caves and mountain scenes,,, as most of the movie is filmed in the great
outdoors the movie moves along pretty good. Always fun to watch a different
version of your favorite movie, and this one left me with a smile.
Great for the whole family. Enjoy
WHERE TIME BEGAN - FABULOUS JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EART.......2007-01-12
This is a low budget version of the 1959 classic Journey to the Center of the Earth. Similar plot with all the character going to the center of the earth & finding monsters. Some of the monsters are really cool to me while one of them , a King Kong ape wanna-be looks like Edward G Robinson and has a super goofy look to it. Characters and situations arent up to the 1959 version with James Mason (no remake to me has been nearly as good). I thought it was entertaining for the most part, & some changes in the story (the man from the future joining the foursome) and there was an uneccessary vomit scene, but overall not too bad. Better than a lot of J Piqor Simon movies like Pieces , the Unearthling, etc. This may have been his biggest budgeted movie for all I know.
It's Just Bad!!!!.......2006-10-19
This has got to be one of the top five worst movies of all time. They have some nerve using the same title as the classic Jules Vern movie (1959).My only recommendation is don't waste your time or money.
What happened?.......2006-02-02
Why does this release keeping getting dropped? I know the last time it turned out it was being released by some sort of bootleg company so it was stopped. I wish a company like Anchor Bay would get the rights to this film and release it already. It's a crucial 80s slasher to have in your collection.
NOT "WHERE TIME BEGAN".......2005-10-26
It's kind of amusing that everyone thinks that this version of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH starring EMO PHILLIPS is actually the spanish film WHERE TIME BEGAN. Of course it does not help that MGM and AMAZON have listed the credits for WHERE TIME BEGAN, which is also an adaption of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. This film is actually from 1988 and I think even more obscure than WHERE TIME BEGAN if such a thing is possible.
I bought this version knowing it was not WHERE TIME BEGAN. I wish it was WHERE TIME BEGAN because I love that film. I have never seen this 1988 version starring comedian EMO PHILLIPS but I have always wanted to.

Customer Reviews:
Fun Mexican teen movie.......2007-02-24
This movie was apparently very popular in Mexico and was part of a trilogy. The other two films are predictably named La Primera Noche and La Ultima Noche. It was a fun coming of age movie about 4 teen girls, each of whom has her own issues with family and sexuality. The actresses were good. One has gone on to add a pop music career to her telenovela acting.
Also, I am trying to learn Spanish and loved the fact that this DVD offered both English and Spanish subtitles, which is not a given with Mexican releases.

A total waste.......2004-10-10
I love bigfoot movies, and I love bad movies, but this was just unwatchable. Nothing about this "film" is redeeming: not the monster, not the gore, not the acting/script. Beyond amaturish and a total waste of time. Don't be tempted!
Nice try.......2004-07-14
I've seen several epics by the Polonia Brothers. Among Us proved to be the least irritating of the bunch. It does have some nice shots from time to time, and the quality of the images aren't too bad. I'm surpised that this one manages a little character development, but that was because it was written by someone other than the Polonias. Too bad everything else about this movie sucked. The acting was embrassing, the music was annoying as hell, and the "creature" was a total joke! I have a high tolerance for low production values. Hey, I understand that it's difficult to make a movie on next to nothing, but a little effort would have been nice. This mishap should be avoided like the plague (unless you're having a bad movie night)!!!
I checked out the audio commentary tracks on the DVD, and I wanted to strangle the "screenwriter". He comes off as very pretentious, thinking that he's written some kind of masterpiece or something. I found out this guy also helped on the script for Peter Rottentail!!! God help us all!!!
Bad, Bad, Bad........2004-07-14
Don't waste your money, this movie stinks worse than skunk apes. Complete waste of money and time, my copy is going to the resale pile and I feel bad I'm setting someone else up to buy this turkey. Bad acting and a stupid plot. Very poorly done. Buy my copy, please.
If you love Bigfoot..........2004-07-13
If you have watched a Pollonia production in the past, you know what to expect, in general. This offering met and exceeded that expectation, in large part due to the writing and competent acting of the 3 leads. It is the Blair Witch Project meeting the Legend of Boggy Creek in a lovingly crafted film. It is a must-have for those who consider themselves connoisseurs of Bigfoot films.

definetly NOT a "must have".......2006-11-14
Lets be honest, I bought the movie because of Angel Boris and not much else. What I got was a little of Angel Boris and not much else. So all my expectations should be matched? Hmm, not really. I would expect even a basic nice story of any movie, but this movie left no impression at all. It is kind of a movie that you'll just forget after you took the DVD out of the player.
1 Star for Angel Boris, 0 for the storyline.
