The definitive American television series of the '90s comes to the big screen with an anticlimactic whimper. And how could it be otherwise? Why should material so perfectly realized in one medium necessarily translate well into another? The series is crisply and thoughtfully executed in just about every detail, but the heart of its appeal lies in the elegant handling of complicated and evolving ongoing story lines, which is not something movies are especially good at. The big-screen drive for closure cramps the creative style, though it may also help nonfans get a grip on the proceedings. We do get some invigorating thrills and chills, however, and a more satisfying sense of the scale of an all-enveloping human-alien conspiracy than ever before, but there's no more plot development here than in an average two-part season-ending. FBI black sheep Mulder and Scully have been temporarily transferred from the X-Files project to an anti-terrorist unit to investigate an Oklahoma City-style bombing. They uncover a new wrinkle in the Syndicate/Cancer Man conspiracy--basically an attempt to help one bunch of (benign?) aliens fight off another bunch who want to colonize Earth. A spectacular, ice-bound finale thrillingly staged by series-veteran director Rob Bowman offers Mulder (but not a conveniently unconscious Scully) his first clear look at a You Know What, which in some quarters qualifies as an epochal event. Martin Landau offers the agents some crucial clues, and several familiar TV faces (including the Lone Gunmen and Mitch Pileggi's indispensable Assistant Director Skinner) turn up briefly to wink knowingly at faithful fans. --David Chute

Description

Thirty-seven thousand years ago, a deadly secret was buried in a cave in Texas. Now the secret has been unleashed. And it's discovery may mean the end of all humanity.

"The plague to end all plagues"

When a terrorist bomb destroys a building in Dallas, Texas, FBI Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy surpassing anything they've ever encountered. With the dubious assistance of a paranoid doctor (Academy Award -winner Martin Landau). Mulder and Scully risk their careers and their lives to hunt down a deadly virus which may be extraterrestrial in origin - and could destroy all life on earth. Their pursuit of truth pits them against the mysterious Syndicate, powerful men who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets safe, leading the agents from the cave in Texas, to the halls of the FBI, and finally to a secret installation in Antarctica which holds the greatest secret of all.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Addition to the X-Files History.......2007-06-30

The short and sweet version of this review: If you've watched X-Files and you've never seen this movie, you must! It has a great deal of extended information about various storylines from the television series. In and of itself, it is a great Sci-Fi movie and even if you aren't interested in the show itself, the movie is still a whole movie and can be enjoyed without any previous knowledge about Mulder and Scully!

5 out of 5 stars love it .......2007-06-30

If you like the series then you will like the movie. Mulder is so cute! anyways there is a great Mulder/Scully scene and the movie was done after season 5 i believe and was the right time for the movie. i saw it a long time ago in theaters with my dad. i thought of it the other day and bought it through amazon....its still a classic series. if you are a fan of x-files you must own the movie. even if you didn't watch the series i think you would still like this movie. its a great sci-fi watch! mainly b/c its possible and makes you think..what if? you will never look at bees the same again.

5 out of 5 stars Love the X Files!.......2007-06-12

I loved the weekly episodes of the X Files, so I wasn't disappointed with the movie. This 1998 film version of the Science Fiction series focuses on Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they try to determine why a bomb was used to cover up the true reasons the bodies of three firemen and a young boy were found in the wreckage, but they died earlier and in a different location! Dana and Fox soon find themselves tracing a deadly virus with extraterrestrial origins. When Scully is infected with the virus, Mulder races to find her after getting his hands on the antidote.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining enough, but too many open ends for the casual fan.......2007-05-25

Despite being a big sci-Fi fan, I never got into the X-Files as a kid.
Like most non-fans, I just didn't have the patience for it. The show would hint at a lot, but it seemed very little would actually happen, and instead each show would just tease us a little more.

The reason I decided to watch the movie was because I thought that the movie would probably be designed for a wider audience, have a self-contained story, and lots more excitement and special effects than the TV show.

Well, kind of. There were more explosions and the special effects were a bit more snazzy. And it was very easy to jump right into it and pick up the story without much knowledge of the TV show. But, in typical X-files fashion, it teased a lot more than it delivered, and the ending was very unsatisfying.

To be fair, I realize this was intentional on the film maker's part. And in the director's commentary, the director repeatedly bragged about leaving things vague in order to make them scarier to the imagination. But, is it just me, or does anyone else think the X-files were never all that scary to begin with?

3 out of 5 stars A Double Life.......2007-05-01

In David Lynch's 1997 cult film, Jazz musician Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) lives in a swank Los Angeles house with his wife Renee (Patricia Arquette, in a prankishly awful brown Betty Page wig), whom he suspects of adultery; they receive mysterious videotapes that seem to have been taken in their house while they both sleep. At a Hollywood party, Fred encounters a mysterious stranger (Robert Blake, in the film's most memorable bit), a nightmarish joker character without eyebrows who uncannily seems to be able to be two places at once. Before he knows it, Fred is under arrest for the gruesome murder and dismemberment of Renee; in prison, he seems to undergo a metamorphosis and become a whole new character, Pete Dayton, a handsome younger mechanic (Balthazar Getty). Dayton becomes involved with Alice, the girlfriend (again played by Arquette, now a blonde) of his best customer, a gangsterish figure named Mr. Eddy (Robert Loggia); Alice tries to escape with Pete from Mr. Eddy's clutches, and then things get really wild.

In retrospect, LOST HIGHWAY film seems now mostly to pave the way for his superb 2001 MULHOLLAND DR., covering many of the same obsessions (the dark dreamy tone, the split narratives, a divided main character, the Los Angeles wasteland) but without the later film's very welcome moments of comic relief or its charismatic and complex central performance by Naomi Watts (in her famous star-making performance). Although Bill Pullman is quite fine at conveying torment, he is less adept at suggesting inner depths or self-division. And its quite puzzling to see why Lynch cast Arquette for any reason (other than for her physical similarity as Alice to Jayne Mansfield). Both Getty and Robert Blake are much more memorable, but they're in smaller roles and can't hold the films together by themselves. The film has some superbly unsettling visual moments (the empty vortexes of Pullman's hallways, a dream vision repeated twice of a desert cabin exploding in flames in reverse), and the film creepily evokes some of the most infamous deaths in Hollywood history, such as the murder of the Black Dahlia (suggested by the bisection of Renee and her dark 40s wig) and the car accident that killed Jayne Mansfield (evoked by the death of the character of Sammy, and by Arquette's appearance as Alice). Even so, MULHOLLAND DR. shows how much stronger a film Lynch might have made, with all the same narrative enigmas but a much stronger emotional connection.

1 out of 5 stars A rare miss for Lynch........2007-04-17

I love David Lynch. To be honest, he could properly poop in a DVD case and I'd give it 4 stars. This movie, however, is terrible. There's no tangent plot, no likeable characters, no nothing. The first viewing of this ended with me and a friend concluding, "I'd like to watch the rest of the movie, but I don't care." The 2nd viewing felt like a marathon in self-control and patience. This is an awful movie.

3 out of 5 stars Good film, bad dvd.......2007-03-21

This movie is excellent if you are into david lynch or any other movies that make you think. Instead of the director telling you exactly what's happening, he has you experience it from the main characters point of view. The reason i gave this movie 3 stars was only because of the quality of this dvd. I would have given it a 1 star if it wasn't for the actual movie. Get the 2 disc version from amazon uk. It's a million times better. That one gets 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars I Guess The Joke's On Us........2007-03-10

This flick was weird, and rather mind-numbingly so, even for a David Lynch film! It took me three watchings, half a bottle of tylenol (for the headaches it gave me) and reading about three or four interviews online with Lynch himself wherein he offered the only explanation that he could (something about a "psychogenic fugue"...?!?!) over this film and it's bizarre circuitous plot for me to even begin to figure out just what the heck is going on throughout half of it! Even now, I'm still not enitirely sure that I'm totally getting this or any of Lynch's films for that matter. And in my opinion therein lies the whole point/problem with Lynch's films. Meaning simply that maybe all of us spend far too much time trying to decipher what his movie's are all about, and that ultimately they may very well be nothing more than big elaborate jokes that he is playing on all of us in that no one but him will ever actually "figure out" his movie's and their supposed "meanings"...if they even have any at all! Though with that said I still find myself somewhat of a fan of the man's films as they are brilliant in terms of the production values (i.e. unique and meticulous set designs, the awesome, weirdo soundtracks, the costuming, the lighting etc.). I just decided some time ago to quit spending so much time thinking about his film's as it's pretty much futile in my book, and instead I just enjoy them for the wild, trippy mindf***s that they obviously are. And 1997's "Lost Highway" is one of Lynch's best examples of this. I highly recommened it to most people, however, those who aren't familiar with the man's film's before this one might want to try the more commercial and less psychologically mind-bending films from earlier in his career entitled "Blue Velvet" and "The Elephant Man". Oh, and I should add that the soundtrack may very well be one of the best ever created! Kudos to Trent Reznor and Lynch regular Angelo Badalementi for that one.

History will place an asterisk next to A.I. as the film Stanley Kubrick might have directed. But let the record also show that Kubrick--after developing this project for some 15 years--wanted Steven Spielberg to helm this astonishing sci-fi rendition of Pinocchio, claiming (with good reason) that it veered closer to Spielberg's kinder, gentler sensibilities. Spielberg inherited the project (based on the Brian Aldiss short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long") after Kubrick's death in 1999, and the result is an astounding directorial hybrid. A flawed masterpiece of sorts, in which Spielberg's gift for wondrous enchantment often clashes (and sometimes melds) with Kubrick's harsher vision of humanity, the film spans near and distant futures with the fairy-tale adventures of an artificial boy named David (Haley Joel Osment), a marvel of cybernetic progress who wants only to be a real boy, loved by his mother in that happy place called home.

Echoes of Spielberg's Empire of the Sun are clearly heard as young David, shunned by his trial parents and tossed into an unfriendly world, is joined by fellow "mecha" Gigolo Joe (played with a dancer's agility by Jude Law) in his quest for a mother-and-child reunion. Parallels to Pinocchio intensify as David reaches "the end of the world" (a Manhattan flooded by melted polar ice caps), and a far-future epilogue propels A.I. into even deeper realms of wonder, even as it pulls Spielberg back to his comfort zone of sweetness and soothing sentiment. Some may lament the diffusion of Kubrick's original vision, but this is Spielberg's A.I. (complete with one of John Williams's finest scores), a film of astonishing technical wizardry that spans the spectrum of human emotions and offers just enough Kubrick to suggest that humanity's future is anything but guaranteed. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Multiple Personality Direction.......2007-06-27

This film will surely hold up well historically. In 2099 when the reviewers are doing their "most influential films of the century" reflections I'm sure this will be on many lists. Both Kubrick and Speilberg annointed this film with their own special genius. It's an uncomplicated remake of any "I want to be a real boy" story filtered through very complicated visualizations.

4 out of 5 stars David is 11 years old. He weighs 60 pounds. He is 4 feet, 6 inches tall. He has brown hair. His love is real. But he is not........2007-06-22

When I first saw this film back in the summer of 2001, I definitely saw more Stanley Kubrick then Steven Spielberg like alot of people did, but then again this was Kubrick's dream project for many many years. And after he died, Spielberg figured the best way to honor Kubrick was to make this film.

Set in the not-so-far future where humans can make realistic robots (called mechas) comes an interesting take on the famous fairy tale Pinocchio.

David (wonderfully played by Haley Joel Osment) is the first of his kind,an artificial kid which is the first to have real feelings, who really wants to be a real boy.

I still don't understand why no-one really liked this film, yes it's long but I love long films. I guess people weren't ready for a film like this or the fact it was a weird combination of two director's styles.

But overall I found this a very enjoyable film and thought Haley Joel Osment should have gotten an nomination for his wonderful and heartbraking performance. And if you watch him very closely, throught out the whole film,he never blinks his eyes.

3 out of 5 stars Pinocchio meets Blade Runner indeed..........2007-05-14

A drama in all the sense of the word, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, brings to the screen the story of a couple that adopts an android capable of love following their son going into a coma. Things become rather complicated when the young boy regains consciousness...
The cast does a good job in their respective roles though its Haley Joel Osment that steals the show.
The similarities with Pinocchio are evident and the film focuses on human relations, hope and inner strength, as well as love, devotion and integrity.
Very serious and very slow at times it does not aim so much to entertain as to stimulate one's mind and emotions.
Recommended for Haley Joel Osment (who is really great) fans and for those with a taste for depression in the extreme.

3 out of 5 stars Blade Runner meets Pinocchio.......2007-02-24

I will say the movie is mesmerizing to watch simply because the visual effects are so good, but it is a highly derivative movie. Kind of like Blade Runner meets Pinocchio with an excrutiatingly long ending as Spielberg tries to sap as much emotion as he can out of this. Personally, I thought it was enough when David finally discovered he wasn't real. That scene carried with it a ton of emotional weight, but of course Spielberg couldn't content himself with such a somber ending to what was a very long journey for the boy to meet his maker. Probably the most impressive scene was that in the robot graveyard under the light of an artificial moon, where robots tried to piece themselves back together from the left over parts. It really gave this viewer empathy with their plight, especially when they were rounded up for the ensuing carnage in a carnival of robotic horrors. Spielberg picks and chooses from a number of science fiction themes as well as children's stories to piece together this ode to artificial intelligence.

5 out of 5 stars A Boy and His Mom, based on 'Super-toys Last All Summer Long'.......2007-02-05

Steven Spielberg is the best movie director ever, if not the greatest human being on our Earth... Now... for the review... A.I. Artificial Intelligence was originally a project - a long time project - of director Stanley Kubrick (Dr Strangelove, Eyes Wide Shut). Kubrick died before the project had progressed too far. I knew this movie was dedicated to Kubrick but the movie was just so very good I spent little time trying to discover any hidden meaning. I was thinking, 'this is the best movie I've ever seen'. Spielberg and crew do a wonderful job here.

Haley Joel Osmet plays 'David' an 11 year old boy who is actually an advanced robot. David is an experimental design equipped to learn and feel. David is adopted into the family of Monica and Henry Swinton (Frances O'Connor and Sam Robards). They have an older son Martin (Jake Thomas) who isn't always kind to his new brother.

The message isn't very subtle. . . Over and over and over, and over, David cries, "Please make me a real boy".

In the end David is hugged by his mother Monica and lies down with her, the narrator saying, "for one day. . . there was no Martin. . . no Henry. . . no doctor Hobby. . ." Only David and his Mom.

If you've ever indulged a rock & roll fantasy, Rock Star will give you the vicarious thrill of seeing that fantasy come to life. That's what happens when talented tribute-band singer Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) is tapped to replace his idol as frontman for 1980s metal gods Steel Dragon. Chris becomes the groupie-laden "Izzy," his manager girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston) grows weary of sex 'n' drugs on tour, and Rock Star plays out its utterly conventional plot line. Despite the casting of real rockers to support Wahlberg's underrated performance (nicely matched by Aniston and Timothy Spall as Steel Dragon's road manager), his character is too rigidly written to follow an obligatory rise and fall, and even its basis in fact (inspired by Tim "Ripper" Owens's recruitment into Judas Priest) can't conceal the movie's predictable formula. As a cautionary tale it's routine, but as a leather-pants love story, Rock Star's got enough good karma to keep its dream alive. --Jeff Shannon

    Product Description

Chris Cole (MARK WAHLBERG) was born to rock. His longtime girlfriend Emily (JENNIFER ANISTON) believes Chris's talent could take him all the way - but instead of writing his own music, Chris worships at the altar of Bobby Beers, the fiery frontman for Steel Dragon, the heavy metal rock legends that both inspire and consume his life. By day, Chris still lives at home with his parents and spends his days repairing copy machines, push-starting his sputtering Dodge Dart and fighting with his brother. But when Chris takes the stage, all of that disappears. When he's fronting Blood Pollution, Pennsylvania's premiere Steel Dragon tribute band, Chris Cole is Bobby Beers - mesmerizing audiences with his perfect imitation of Beers' electrifying vocals and sexy snarl. Blood Pollution's low-rent recreation of the Dragon's elaborate arena shows drive the locals (including Chris's loving parents and amused choir director) into a head-banging, hair-whipping frenzy. The night his bandmates boot him out of the group he founded, Chris is devastated - until an unexpected phone call changes his life forever: he, Chris Cole, has been tapped to replace Bobby Beers as the lead singer of Steel Dragon. In an instant, Chris rockets to the dizzying heights of sudden stardom, rising from devotee to icon, from the ultimate rock fan to the ultimate rock god - the wanna-be who got to be. So what happens when an average guy gets everything he wants... and discovers it's not enough?

4 out of 5 stars Rock on! .......2007-05-09

I had a good time watching this movie. It's entertaining and one that you can watch more than once and still enjoy. Rock Star also had a great cast to help keep both the action and the melodrama on an even keel.

5 out of 5 stars love the rock and roll music.......2007-03-18

the movie proves that everyone has a dream, and some day it will bw achieved thru hard work.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Rock Movie for the Hair Era.......2007-02-16

This at least glosses over many elements of rock stardom and in some instances, the acting and situations are pulled off very well. The hero worship, incredible fan dedication, sex, drugs, sex, alcohol, sex, heartbreak, band breakups, life on the road, sex, drugs, hair, leather, backstage passes (which lead to more sex and drugs) are covered pretty well. Fun flick!

3 out of 5 stars AWESOME 80'S MOVIE TRIBUTE!! but kind of touching!!!!.......2006-11-30

I though that this movie would be cool as Detroit Rock City or Dazed and Confused but is not! Rock Star is not exacly a "rock movie tribute for the past deacades" like Detroit Rock City, this is more like a dramatic story of a rocker fan in the 80's.

But DON'T GET ME WRONG! this movie is COOL!! The main character in the story hang out with the band, gettin wasted, going with groupies, lisening to rock, flashing devil horn signs and teaching his little bother how to be a HEAVY METAL FAN!

The Cons are: Most of the soundtracks were not taken from true 80's rock bands, they were made by this fictional band with fictional songs called Dragon Steel. The movie have some touching moments that spoil the fun, there were no comments about 80's rock bands, the movie wasn't that funny and the ending was kind of predictable.

P.S: Is worth buying it, but if you are looking for cool funny rocking movies of past decades then this is not for you.

    ADIOS.

4 out of 5 stars "Gimme blood Pollutions"...this movie will make metal heads "Stand up and Shout".......2006-10-28

This movie was a suprise when it came out, not highly publisized, but a good cast in Jennifer Aniston and Mark Wahlberg. This takes place in the mid/late 1980's where Wahlberg plays a early 20's frontman to a tribute band to "steel dragons", a 70's super-metal group with erie similarities to Judas Priest, although the creators deny any tie ins. He lives at home with his parents still and is trying to "make it big" on someone elses music, and they do a good job. Low and behold he is handed the dream of a lifetime when Steel Dragon decides to get rid of their legendary frontman and starts a search for his replacement...which ends at Wahlbergs door. From here we follow his character, now known as "Izzy" to his public through through his Dream. No real suprises in this movie as far a story line (especially if you know the Judas priest story), and no acadamy awards for acting, but some good humor and Entertaining, with a Killer soundtrack. Steel Dragons is made up of, and played in the movie by, real life rock stars Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne,Black Label society), Jason Bohnam (son of Jon Bohnam of Zepplin, and Bohnam), Jeff Pilson (Dokken), Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmstein group), Nick Catonese (Black label society), Mike Matijevic (steelheart). Just an overall good movie, great music, and entertaining, especially if you are in to metal. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars blood and comedy.......2007-06-12

this film is cheesy, stupid, mostly bad acting and worth purchasing if your a true fan of the genre! I love the black actor in this film, he was also great in the original "dawn of the dead" of the late 70's. some of the best cheesy one liners in horror film history are in this flick. i give this one 4 stars. so if you love "the texas chainsaw massacre" and love horror films, i say spark up a bowl and enjoy the film!

2 out of 5 stars Not Bad, Not Good.......2007-01-14

First of all, you'd think a movie called Leatherface would tell us something about Leatherface, but it's just something used to sell the movie. Now that that's out of the way I'll say this: I don't think I've seen less happen in a 90 minutes movie. Honestly, the series of events that take place in this movie only goes by so fast because nothing much happens. That said, this is A VAST IMPROVEMENT OVER TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2. They didn't yank our chains trying to make this into some goofball comedy, and rightfully so, Tobe Hooper wasn't even realistically considered to direcy. Unfortunately, no one really was, not even the director, Jeff Bur, who's vision was stripped of all its gorey glory. Like he says in the short documentary on this disc, The movie is called Leatherface - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, so what are people surprised about? Particularly the MPAA, who seem to live for the ruin of directors making studio horror films. Well, fortunately this is New Line we're talking about here, and just like they did with their Jason Goes to Hell DVD, they give us the R-Rated version that saves us the trouble of looking away from the gorey parts, and the Unrated Version that actually does make us look away. Too bad the movie just isn't good. It's not bad either. I put it right in the middle because of the strong comeback it makes from TCM 2, but it really just doesn't grab the audience's attention. Not even Viggo Mortenson's unknown roll in the movie really does anything for the movie, but I do recommend this to horror fans, or TCM fans. The DVD is nice, with a 30+ minute documentary that's very honest about the making of the movie and the frustration faced by the director. There's a commentary as well, with deleted scenes, and alternate ending, and trailers.

    4 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-01-04

I saw This movie and is really good, is better that part 2, the part 2 really sucks, but this is awesome. check this....

4 out of 5 stars Differences between 'R' rated and 'rated' version.......2006-11-10

Regarding the above title, there was very little difference between the 2 versions on this edition of the Dvd. There seems little point in the censors deleting the scenes as they did in the USA and the UK as they do very little to the film's context. Still, it's a very good horror film anyways with plenty of gore (if that's what you're into) and I'd still give it a 9 1/2 out of 10.

    1 out of 5 stars disjointed..........2006-11-01

Sadly, it could have and should have been something...instead it is nothing more than a mess.
Joe Unger and the actor who played the perverted gas station attendant with the white film over one eye
are very good. This, however, is hardly enough to recommend the flick.

One of the most talented animators of the silent and early sound eras, Ub Iwerks designed the physical appearance of Mickey Mouse. He animated the first Mickey shorts almost single-handedly, doing more than 700 drawings in a single day. Iwerks's animation was rubbery, weightless, and appealing, but his approach was at odds with the increasing realism Walt Disney sought. In 1930, he left Disney to start his own studio, but despite his talent--and the exceptional animators who worked for him--he produced old-fashioned, unfunny cartoons that couldn't compete with the more sophisticated storytelling and brash gags in the shorts from Disney, the Fleischers, Warner Bros., and MGM. In 1940, Iwerks returned to the Disney studio, where he won Oscars for his innovations in optical printing and traveling mattes.

The most entertaining films on this disc are the campy musicals such as "Humpty Dumpty" (1935), with its Busby Berkeley chorus of dancing eggs, and the jazz-inflected "Little Boy Blue" (1936). Typically, the title character in "The Valiant Tailor" (1934) is a round-headed nonentity who scares off the Giant by making a hive of bees sting him; he never comes alive, the way Mickey Mouse does in Disney's "Brave Little Tailor" (1938). --Charles Solomon

    Description

Volume 1 of a celebration of the pioneering solo cartoon work of Ub Iwerks, Walt Disney's foremost animator/collaborator in the formative early years. The first fully animated color cartoon version of "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp" (1934)...the legendary Flip the Frog in the slapstick masterpiece "The New Car" (1931)...the original cartoon adaptation of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," "The Headless Horseman" (1934)...the little-known animation star Willie Whopper in the surrealistic sci-fi classic "Stratos Fear" (1933)...and a famous "lost" film, a full-color cartoonization of "Don Quixote" (1934). These are just a few of the 58 cartoons captured on these two DVDs (available separately) of rediscovered masterworks from the very beginnings of the Golden Age of American Animation.

    3 out of 5 stars Forgotten Cartoons.......2007-01-19

We gave this DVD to our 46 year old son for Christmas per his request.

I'm sure he'll enjoy hours of enjoyment from these forgotten cartoons. This will be added to his DVD library of old cartoons.

3 out of 5 stars Great for cartoon fans, but maybe a little dull for everyone else.......2006-05-29

I'm a huge fan of classic animation from the 30's, so I'm delighted to have this large collection at such a great price. But I do think people who prefer the laughs of Warner Bros. or the polish of Disney shorts will be disappointed. Flip the Frog and Willie Whopper aren't exactly household names, and it's not hard to see why. The cartoons, though well-made, lack much personality and the action is too often repetitive.

The picture and sound quality varies from fair to good, with many of the ComicColor 'toons looking a bit washed out. Flip, in basic black & white, at least looks better than the color cartoons in this collection.

Still, for the price, it's worth having if you're into this sort of thing.

4 out of 5 stars Historical collection, and quite interesting........2005-11-02

Many of the other commentators of Volume 1 and Volume 2 have very nicely described the contents of these two collections. I'd like to just say that I found these cartoons to be very essential for anyone interested in the history of animation.

Flip the Frog comes across as another Mickey Mouse, Willie Whopper is somewhat interesting, while the Comicolor series is somewhat similar to Silly Symphonies. I'm not surprised at this since Ub worked at Disney, and is responsible for the early animation of Mickey Mouse and several Silly Symphonies.

I found the liner notes helpful in explaining the social context of these cartoons. Many are poking fun at the Hollywood stars of the day (Disney and Warner also have several of their own similar cartoons), others have relevant commentary about various conditions in our country at the time, and others are just interesting trips into the supernatural. Keep in mind that all these things have been pursued by Disney, Warner Brothers, etc., so there is nothing unusual here. There are plenty of sight gags and the usual exaggerations that early cartoons are especially known for.

Also, I think it would be fair to say that the characters and stories as a whole tend not to progressively develop over the short life of Ub's studio. If you treat all the cartoons simply as individual accomplishments, then it's not a big deal, but as a whole they don't really change much. This isn't necessarily a problem, just an observation.

It's kind of interesting to me that I always felt I was almost watching Disney cartoons, but at the same time there are definitely other edgier influences at work here. The fact that Ub's staff of animators largely came from the Fleischer studio, and included Betty Boop's creator, made the difference. Because of this, innuendo abounds in several of Flip's cartoons, produced from 1930-1933 (pre-Code era). One cartoon, "The Milkman" ends with Flip and the kid singing "Hail, Hail, the gang's all here", and the horse responds by singing "What the hell do we care?". The second time around, as the horse startes to sing the same response, Flip bashes him over the head with a milk bottle to stop him from using the "naughty" word. Holy cow!!! Can you imagine Disney doing this? In "The Office Boy", the sexual innuendos hit a high, especially with the secretary. I was laughing for being taken by surprise. I didn't expect this sort of content. Well, get ready for an interesting time. By the way, unless I'm mistaken, it seemed like Volume 2 was the one for the edgier cartoons. Willie Whopper's cartoons are not too bad, really. They are tall tales told by a kid. Lastly, the Comi-Color cartoons, though fairly delightful, never measure up to the quality of Disney's Silly symphonies. I'd have to say that they are probably the highest quality cartoons Ub produced.

Both DVD cases say that these cartoons are "now viewed for the first time on DVD in unfaded, pristine prints from the orginal negatives". I must protest! Many of these cartoons don't look or sound pristine at all, but are in many cases faded and dirty, with sound to match. It depends on the cartoons. Most of the Flip cartoons aren't so bad, the Willie Whopper ones are the worst of these two collections, and The Comi-Color cartoons all seem to have a softness about them (video and audio). I'd say that perhaps this is the best we can get our hands on, but, really, to say "unfaded, pristine prints" is just flat-out not the case. Overall, most of them are quite watchable, but just keep these observations in mind. I give both collections four stars due to the technical issues.

5 out of 5 stars Worths every penny.......2004-12-31

The effort and creativity put into these cartoons are commendable. And it's really such a different style from cartoons today.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic DVD.......2004-06-23

It's about time that a company focused its attention on Ub Iwerks. The Cartoons That Time Forgot, are literally just that, cartoons that have not seen the light of day from the time they were made. Ub Iwerks got his start working for Walt Disney, and animated the earliest Mickey Mouse cartoons as well as some of the early Silly Symphonies.

These cartoons clearly show some influences from the Disney studios, some characters look amazingly Mickey Mouseish, and many have the same charm of the Disney shorts. These cartoons are a good introduction to some cartoon characters that never quite caught on, like Flip the Frog and Willie Whopper (who?).

If you are a vintage animation lover, then this DVD belongs in your library!

Take West Side Story, remove the music, add excessive profanity and violence, and you'll get Deuces Wild. It's an overripe melodrama in which rival street gangs--in this case Deuces vs. Vipers in 1958 Brooklyn--inevitably clash in a deadly rumble, preceded by shameless scenery-chewing from nearly everyone involved. Stephen Dorff plays the head Deuce, agonizing over his older brother's drug overdose and leading a cast of rising stars and familiar faces including Brad Renfro as Dorff's hot-tempered kid brother, Norman Reedus as the vicious lead Viper, Fairuza Balk as Renfro's no-nonsense girlfriend, and Matt Dillon (uncredited) as the kingpin who introduces heroin to Dorff's drug-free turf. Balthazar Getty, Frankie Muniz, and James Franco are also in the cast, suggesting that director Scott Kalvert was hoping for an unforgettable ensemble. What he got instead was a stale story crowded with percolating posers, recommended only for those who've never seen the 1979 street-gang classic The Warriors. --Jeff Shannon

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Deuces Wild doesnt have that much fight in it.......2005-09-26

Stephen Dorff (Blade, Entropy) stars as the leader of the gang called the Deuces and he was stricken years ago when one of his brothers died from an overdose that his enemy on the otherside of the street, the leader of the Vipers, played by Norman Reedus (Blade 2, Gossip) gave him. Now, Reedus springs out of prison and wants to take revenge on the Deuces starting a club on their side. Brad Renfro (The Jacket, Tart) plays the second older brother of Dorff who falls madly in love with a member of the Vipers sisters, played by Fairuza Balk (Almost Famous, The Craft) but his brother Dorff has his suspicions about her and doesnt want Renfro to be going out with her. Then things heat up as both gangs go head on in fights and brawls to see who comes out on top. Sometimes boring, nothing that can bring it up to be a good movie. Some of the acting is laughable and the editing, especially the fast motion/slow motion sprinkled into the fight scenes are really lame. when i heard about DEUCES WILD back in late 1999 early 2000,i was elated at the prospect of there finally being another 50's/early 60's type of street gang melodrama on the horizon.
yet,of course, because of the 9/11 incident in new york, the a-holes in hollywood decided to push back its release for quite a while,so i had to be content with the occasional promo photo in random movie magazines.
finally the movie came out without much fanfare, alas it was also the 'spiderman' weekend, and also the innocuos 'lord of the rings' was in theatres as well that weekend, but luckilly that meant i was in the movie theatre with just myself,my girl and about ten other people.
i thought the movie was excellent, great costumes, great cars, great period music, great locations, good yet hammy acting, gorgeous leading ladies, stylized violent rumble scenes, cheezy yet touching overacted scenes between familys, decent period detail.
yet then the reviews started coming in,and everybody who had ever had freshmen english or drama class compared it annoyingly to west side story,a 1961 singing and dancing musical, when they should have made comparisons to another tho far superior 1961 gang film, john frankenhiemer's black and white opus,'the young savages',or even to photographer bruce davidson's late 50's photo essay,'brooklyn gang' or even the short comic story in the late 70's underground comic,'50's funnies',called,'turf',about a gang in the 50's fighting with another gang who wanted drugs in the neiborhood and who had mob backing and a character was even named marco.....awfully convenient dont you think?
anyways, while this movie was'nt as good as 'the young savages','lords of flatbush' or 'the wanderers',to name but a few,but it was a hundred times better than the wimpy 'west side story' could ever be.
i dont know if this review helps, but the leads in this film were really good, stephen dorf, brad renfro, drea dematteo, faruiza balk, matt dillon, normon reedus and james franco putting in good performances......also i liked the fact that they did,nt over saturate the film with to much music from the past,it was just the right amount, very good choices of songs by 'dion and the belmonts','jerry butler and the impressions','the valentines','dee clark' and a few others.
and of course, faruiza balk and drea dematteo, tho a little long in the tooth to be playing teenagers, looked absolutely scrumptiuos.

5 out of 5 stars A more intense version of West Side Story.......2004-11-27

Scott Kalvert did an outstanding job directing this movie and making the time period as realistic as possible. The similarity between this and Westside Story is the gang rivalry. In Westside Story, you have The Jets vs. The Sharks and in this movie you have The Deuces vs. The Vipers. I didn't see all of Westside Story though but it seems like its less intense than this movie. This movie has some Rebel Without A Cause as well but I didn't see that movie either. I compare this movie to Rebel Without A Cause because of the gang element and Stephen Dorff is The Jimmy Dean of this movie. Stephen Dorff does a great job as 'Leon', the noble yet violent leader of The Deuces. Brad Renfro also does a great job as Leon's younger brother Bobby. He is easily influenced by his brother's hatred towards The Vipers and his life-style is even more chaotic when he meets 'Annie', who is played by Fairuza Balk. Drea DeMateo was so so as 'Betsy', Norman Reedus does a great job as 'Marco', and Matt Dillion does a great job as 'Fritzy'. Overall, its a powerful and intense movie and a must see for movie fans. You'll be pleasantly surprised!

1 out of 5 stars save your money.......2004-04-13

Unless you like cheesey, poorly written, poorly acted, and poorly executed movies save yourself the money. If you just have to have a nostaglia trip, get The Outsiders instead

4 out of 5 stars just ok .... far from great , but not awful.......2004-01-10

Well like most others have commented yes the basic plot of the movie has been too many times to count . And yes there have been dozens of movies about the big-greasy hair and white t-shirt gangs of the late 50's and early 60's . But how many of those involved heroin dealers? or how many were as violent but as well written as this movie ... Yes , I will admit that the casting is a little weird in places . Most of the characters are suposed to be in their late teens or early twenties , and Fairuza Balk and Drea Demateo are just a little too old to be playing girls in their late teens . Or the head of the Deuces and his brother are really out of place , the are suposed to be in their early 20s! Couldn't they have found actors with less receaded hair lines?

The film itself is ok and is filled with ok writting, decent acting , and tons of nostalga ( all the cars and the BROOKLYN Dodgers). And if you want to know the honest truth I saw the movie mostly because I'm obssessed with Fairuza Balk (dont ask why , Im not sure "why") .Yeah overall the movie does leave something to be desired in some areas but you should find something to like and will probably watch this again when you dont know what else to rent or need to kill an hour or two. So yeah its an ok movie.

Even by the high standards of the Hallmark Hall of Fame, A Painted House is well above average. John Grisham's well-received "lawyer-free" novel was respectfully adapted by Patrick Sheane Duncan (Mr. Holland's Opus), and director Alfonso Arau (Like Water for Chocolate, A Walk in the Clouds) brings just the right touch of toughness and delicate nostalgia to Grisham's semi-autobiographical remembrance of boyhood in rural Arkansas, circa 1952. Grisham's alter ego is 10-year-old Luke Chandler (well played by Logan Lerman), and when tempers flare into violence between the Mexican migrant workers and itinerant "hill people" hired to harvest cotton on his grandfather's farm, Luke--who has witnessed a murder--must decide whether to expose the killer or keep the crime a secret. Filled with warm grace notes and a perfect cast including leather-faced Scott Glenn and Melinda Dillon (as Luke's grandparents), A Painted House juggles multiple crises (including devastating rainstorms) with strong family values, capturing the humor and hardship of farming life at a crossroads of fading tradition and inevitable change. Combining elements of To Kill a Mockingbird and Places in the Heart, this is a purebred Hallmark production in every respect, earning a badge of pride for everyone involved in its making. --Jeff Shannon

    Product Description

Until that September in 1952, Luke Chandler had never kept a secret or told a single lie. But in that long, hot summer when 10-year-old Luke Chandler comes of age, two groups of migrant workers and two very dangerous men - come through the Arkansas Delta to work the Chandler cotton farm. And suddenly mysteries flood Luke's world. A murder leaves the town seething in gossip and suspicion. A beautiful young woman catches Luke's eye.
A fatherless baby is born, and someone has begun furtively painting the bare clapboards of the Chandler farmhouse, slowly, painstakingly bathing the run-down structure in gleaming white.
As young Luke watches the world around him, he shelters secrets that could shatter lives and change his family and his town forever.
A memorable adaptation of John Grisham's life-affirming story, A Painted House draws on childhood memories and "local lore" from his Arkansas roots.

It keeps you thinking. It has a great theme of family and closeness. The story of one boy and his families hardships living by the river.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good for a book adaptation.......2005-09-01

I was curious about this film because I had recently read - and enjoyed - the book by John Grisham. And well, yes, the book IS better, but who would expecte anything else? The movie version still is very good indeed, the acting was good. Scott Glenn played the grandfather very convincingly and Logan Lerman gave a promising performance as young Luke Chandler. These two worked well together and they are the main characters. Although some slight story adaptations were made, the film still stays true to the book (John Grisham himself was involved in the project). There should have been a little more focus on the character of Cowboy, since his part in the story got bigger towards the end and only little background about the developing conflict between him and Hank Spruill (a very good performance by Pablo Schreiber as the angry young man) was really given - whereas in the book the conflict builds gradually. The final - and fatal - fight between the two also differs from the book version, but the way it starts here was probably necessary to make it work (see my comment about the lack of development). Apart from a few minor upsets, this is a fine and entertaining film.

5 out of 5 stars A Painted House (DVD) based on novel by John Grisham.......2005-08-03

An excellent movie breathing life into the story and characters as depicted in John Grisham's story.
I loved the book and this film really does it justice. A must have for any John Grisham fans.

If you see it you'll never want to read it, a great book to read. The movie didn't carry the half of it.

5 out of 5 stars -An American Story--.......2004-09-18

Having listened to this book on tape, my husband and I were delighted to see that Hallmark Hall of Fame had turned this wonderful story into a film. We were not disappointed.

This story takes place in Arkansas and is set in September of 1952. The Chandler family owns a farm. They grow cotton and hire both, Mexican migrant workers and Hill people, to pick their crop. The two groups clash when they meet on the Chandler farm. The story is told by 10 year old Luke Chandler. Logan Lerman gave a memorable performance as Luke. The entire cast was good, and we also enjoyed Scott Glenn in the role of Luke's grandfather.

John Grisham's books are always captivating, but this is my favorite. I wish that he would write more stories like this one. It gave us a look at America in a different era when baseball was an American past time and families worked together for a common goal. It also showed the relationship between the farmers and migrant workers who shared the responsibility of harvesting the cotton.

    Description

These World War II era shorts, produced in the United States and around the world, were never meant to survive past wartime, and understandably many have been shelved, lost or forgotten since the mid-1940s. Fortunately, these films still exist and serve as an interesting social document of the attitudes prevalent at the time; some imposed by the government in the form of propaganda and some by the filmmakers. This great collection is mastered from original 16mm and 35mm film prints, many from the only surviving material

    3 out of 5 stars A remarkable "Schneemann".......2006-07-21

This collection of wartime propaganda dates from animation's golden period - Chuck Jones and Bob Clampett among others, make vital contributions, but given the economics of wartime production, these inevitably lack the richness of their best work. There are also selections from Trnka, Cal and Bunin (a clever spoof called "Bury the Axis"), and training films, including the 20 minute "Camouflage" - but the transfer quality is only fair, and somehow, I feel this is not a disc you'll be returning to often.
"Der Schneemann" (1943) is another story. Fischerkoesen's classic about a snowman determined to enjoy a few fleeting moments of spring, is one of the unheralded gems of animation. The opening scene (and a few others, alas!) have faded to red, but otherwise, it's a nice clean print, contrast is good, depth and detail, excellent, the painstakingly crafted 3-D settings, extraordinary. The icy blues of winter are adequately conveyed, and enough of the original agfacolor remains for a gloriously hued spring. This, as they say, is worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of WWII cartoon film rarities.......2006-04-20

One of the most fascinating areas of the classic animation genre lies within the short films which were produced during the World War II era. This was made plainly obvious with the huge success of Disney's "On The Frontlines" DVD release of 2004. Extensive as this wonderful set was, the scope was somewhat limited, highlighting only the Disney studios productions of the era. Many other animation venues were utilized for the war efforts as well, and producer Steve Stanchfield of Thunderbean Animation has now produced a new DVD sampling, providing a wider range of war era films for us to explore. Specifically," Cartoons For Victory" is a single disc compendium of animation offering a more global overview, even including rare materials offering the perspective of the Axis powers. Films produced in Britain, Czechoslovakia, Nazi Germany, Occupied France, and of course the USA , can be found here, and it makes for a most intriguing and interesting mix!

The cartoons are grouped in two separate categories, with a third devoted to the Bonus Features. The first grouping includes entertainment/propaganda films that are pretty effective at vilifying the enemy. Of particular note is "Bury The Axis" a first class stop motion piece that is not only comical, but very clever in the musical department as well. It's very similar in appearance to the George Pal Puppetoons. For an Axis perspective there is the diabolical "Nimbus Libéré" which shows viewers how Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Felix and Popeye, are happily bombing French civilians in order to "Liberate" them. This has to be seen to be believed! Another wonderful film is "The Springman and the SS" a film produced in Czechoslovakia, that is a masterpiece of lampoon. The film is an excellent satire of the perceived extremisms of the Nazi Reich, and centers on the almost clownish antics of a Nazi leader who seems certain every home is a haven for Allied sympathizers. A chimney sweep decides enough is too much and dons sofa springs upon his feet, and a mask made of a sock, with a hole from the heel serving, as his eye portal. Suited up, he bounds to the roof top of the ministry, and catches the SS corps attention by giving out a long yodel and then blows his nose with their flag! He then leads them on a chase that exploits their single mindedness to the point of their own destruction. A very clever film! There are four other equally fascinating films to be explored here as well.

The second and larger grouping consists of educational/training films. Most notable are the "Private Snafu" and "Mr. Hook" cartoons. The infamous "Private Snafu" series was produced by Warner Brothers for the Army-Navy Screen Magazine presentations and were directed by legends such as Robert Clampett and Frank Tashlin. These films have developed an almost cult following, and for good reason. Because of the military's willingness to allow a little more creativity along adult lines, the subject matter focused more on young enlisted men's attitudes and interests, and censorship was relaxed accordingly. Two of titles which appear here, "Booby Traps" and "Censored", are notorious for their "pinup girl" stylings. For instance in "Censored", Snafu's gal Sally Lou is portrayed in a sexy topless vignette, albeit demurely covered by an arm, while chatting on the telephone.

The Mr. Hook cartoon series is extremely rare to find, being produced for the United States Navy. Only four films are known to exist, and all are included here! The uniting theme within these cartoons was to encourage sailors to save their money for after the war, preferably in war bonds. Hook himself was more of an average Joe than Snafu, but soon exhibited all of the guile and resilience expected of an American soldier when challenged by an enemy. The character was actually created by Hank Ketchum, who is more widely known as the creator of the "Dennis the Menace" cartoon strip. The debut cartoon in the series was produced at the Walter Lantz studios, in Technicolor no less!, Titled Take Heed Mr. Tojo (1943) the film was, until this DVD release, obtainable only through "grapevine" trading ventures, and those almost always being of very marginal quality. Here we have the benefit of a gorgeous pristine print source, looking like it was made yesterday!

Another menu selection offers a grouping of films that concentrate on more generic approaches to instructional training for the armed forces. These are surprisingly entertaining, considering how dry the subject material is. In particular "Camouflage" demonstrates the why and how of the subject in an easily understood, but attention keeping manner. Filmed in Technicolor by the First Motion Picture Unit of the US Army Air Corps, it was directed by Disney veteran Frank Thomas, and boasts excellent production values. The instructional aspects of the film are explained by "Jehudi" a chameleon that is well versed in the applications of camouflage. (naturally!) Blending equal measures of humor and seriousness, this is another first rate inclusion in this DVD release.

This may well be the finest collection of films Thunderbean has put together since the "Popeye The Sailor-Original Classics" DVD release. Producer Steve Stanchfield has blended together an excellent variety of rare war-era cartoon films. To be honest the visual quality is a bit lower than usual, but it is more than made up for by the comparative rarity of the films found within. Most of this material has never seen the spotlight of a home video production, so there is a newness here that is rarely experienced in a classic animation genre DVD. And these films are still highly entertaining! I guess the best compliment I can pay this release is to say it belongs right along side my "On The Frontlines" set, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if I viewed it more often than the Disney set!

This is the first Hellraiser sequel that doesn't bear the imprimatur of creator Clive Barker, and that makes it a sequel that many Hellraiser fans will want to disown, but they shouldn't dismiss it altogether. Now under the control of Miramax producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, the franchise takes an entirely new direction, and Inferno is primarily a detective thriller in which a corrupt cop (Craig Sheffer) takes on a case that will judge his soul and, ultimately, damn him forever. His judge and jury will be Pinhead (Doug Bradley) and his legion of twisted Cenobites, but before he can be tried and condemned, Sheffer's cop will watch as those around him are killed off one by one, leaving a trail of blood (and telltale severed fingers) that leads back to the torment of his own youth.

So, what you really have here is a variation on It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol, with all the themes reversed to hellish extremes. The plot doesn't hold together all that well, but you can't fault the film for establishing and maintaining a heavily somber tone. This is pretty dark stuff, after all, and although Hellraiser fans will lament that Pinhead's appearance is relatively brief, he's presented here in an intriguing new light--not merely an icon of pain and suffering, but a giver of counsel and justice to those (like Sheffer's cop) who arguably deserve the eternal anguish they will receive. Does that make Pinhead a good guy? If this otherwise lugubrious sequel achieves anything, it's that it raises that question and lets the viewer decide. --Jeff Shannon

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It is desent.......2007-02-04

Hellraiser: Inferno is probably the best of the far too many films to follow the orginal two classics, Hellraiser and Hellbound.

I do not think Inferno is great and I do not think it compares at all to the 1st two films, but is superior to the pointless gore fests of Hell On Earth and Bloodline and the laughable parts of the series in 6, 7, and 8.

Inferno returns to the orginal idea of the 1st two films in that it revolves around how solving the box brings both mental and physical suffering to the individual who opens it.

Inferno focuses more on the mental aspect and perhaps shows more in depth the hell Frank went through in the orginal film through the eyes of Joe Thorne.

When it comes to Pinhead, I think less is more. I feel that he was far overexposed in parts 3 and 4 and it limited his effectiveness when he did appear. Though his overall appearence in Inferno is brief, it is powerful nonetheless.

Unlike most of the Hellraiser sequals, Inferno actually has good acting and a decent plot with some substance.

Though I doubt anyone will be blown away by Inferno, it is definatly worth seeing once.
