Innocuous, innocent, and somewhat idiotic, Disney's bubbleheaded road-movie comedy plays as a farcical remake of the 1976 cult TV-movie melodrama The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. Jake Gyllenhaal is the goodhearted innocent raised in a sort of human Habitrail of plastic rooms and rubber tunnels. To win back the girl of his dreams (Marley Shelton), he steps out of his indoor greenhouse and into a homemade Ziplock bubble suit. It's the usual story: naive innocent bounces down the highway like a beach ball with legs and wins over the wacky supporting cast of soft-hearted bikers, zombielike teenage cultists, and orphaned "freaks" through purity and pluck. The premise wears thin after a while, but Gyllenhaal keeps the film bounding along with goofy innocence and energetic eagerness. Swoosie Kurtz costars as his religious-zealot clinging mom. Watch for Fabio in an inspired cameo. --Sean Axmaker

Description

From the producer of the outrageous AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME, BUBBLE BOY is the hilarious, laugh-out-loud comedy about a sheltered young man (Jake Gyllenhaal -- OCTOBER SKY) who breaks all the rules on a wild adventure to get the girl of his dreams! Though he's lived his entire life within the confines of a protective plastic bubble and under the ever-watchful eye of his overprotective mother (Swoosie Kurtz -- GET OVER IT), Jimmy Livingston (Gyllenhaal) never thought that he'd missed out on anything, until the girl next door (Marley Shelton -- VALENTINE, SUGAR & SPICE) ran off to get married in Niagara Falls. With the wedding only days away, Jimmy has no choice but to build a mobile "bubble suit" and set off across the country to stop the wedding and confess his love to her!

5 out of 5 stars Very funny.......2007-06-10

I thought this movie was pretty funny and sometimes sad that someone who was born without immunity would just live in an isolation bubble in his room for mostly his whole life it really must feel like that he's a prisoner his whole life. The bubble boy is headed out to niagra falls to stop a wedding and purpose to a girl he's madly inlove with. He meets alot of people on the road bikers hippies freaks and they all are willing to help bubble boy out. The ending was pretty insane though but has a real happy ending. Did he ever get out of his bubble? see the movie and find out. The only thing I hate is the punk rock music in this movie I hate punk rock I would not buy the sound track I would Buy the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly paced farce!.......2007-02-08

This was just a great time, a farce with perfect timing and pitch--crazy characters all around doing expected and sometimes unexpected things. Brought all the parties together nicely at the end, and used well the opportunity to poke fun at just about everybody. Jakey's goofy grin, bedroom eyes and overall innocence... what a killer combo! The "$500!" back-and-forth sequences had me on the floor, and I don't know how they did that with a straight face.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-01-12

"Five Hundred Dollars!" This movie is a classic. I can sum it up in one word, "Beetlejuice". Not the movie, the actor who gained fame (?) on Howard Stern. He cracks me up. The cast as a whole takes the premise of the movie seriously and that leads to some over the top performances, especially the mother as played by Swoosie Kurtz. Sit Down, Press Play, and Start Laughing.

4 out of 5 stars Silly...but so very funny.......2006-11-19

I finally got over my snobbery to actually watch this movie and I'm so glad that I did. True the premise get a little old somewhere around the middle, but Gyllenhaal keeps you interested and emotionally invested--a sign of a truelly good actor. Warning: you need to be in a goofy mood to enjoy this film. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Casting Choice, Very Funny Movie.......2006-06-18

This movie is an underated comedy that deserves more credit that it recieved when it came out in theaters. Critics were quick to stomp all over this movie because of the so-called insensitivity to bubble community. Everytime a movie comes out all different kinds of groups have to come out and spoil something great. This movie has a great story line and an amazing cast. Of course Swoozie as the over protective mom just made this movie even better as it went on. Jake does comedy very well and brings this bubble boy character to life. See the movie and judge for yourselves.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Story Holds Up Over Time.......2005-08-03

The Boy in the Plastic Bubble is dated in appearance given the year it was produced but still tells a compelling and true story of a boy forced to live in a germ-free room due to a severe immune deficiency. A young John Travolta gives a sensitive performance in the lead role.
The most riveting moment personally, was the last scene where he chooses to leave the protected room so that he can experience the outside world and actually touch the girl he has fallen for. You can practically experience with him all of what he sees, smells and hears as he ventures outside. That is how the film ends. We can guess what eventually happens but playing that out would drag the film down. The unfortunate aspect of this DVD is that the visual and audio quality is poor; obviously just a video transfer and not from a master print obviously. Still the story was worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Rivetting, and sensitive performances!.......2005-02-27

John Travlota gives a rivetting and sensitive performance as Tod Lubitch; a boy forced to live in a plastic insolation chamber due to a deficient, or lack of, immune system. Despite numerous challenges, frustrations and obstacles, Tod Lubitch never gives up and continues to reach for what seems unobtainable, he dazzles would-be taunters with his keen wit and charm, successfully wooes the ever popular girl of his dreams, and helps design a spacesuit to wear that will enable him to leave his "bubble". Without giving too much of the plot away its worth saying that this movie is a collector's item.

I believe that the person who wrote the review on November 23, 2004 misread the review by the person in Atlanta. The person not once states that Tod Lubitch has AIDS or HIV, but expresses concern over how society treats those who are sick; our elderly, young, poor etc. And how health care has quickly become a luxury rather than a privilege. Not one person in our rich Nation should go without adequate medical coverage.

Lastly, much can be learned from this movie by those who are open-minded and receptive to it. One of the most important messages it delivers is that with a little kindness, compassion, and acceptance one can overcome just about anything.

Remember, it much easier to judge and hate than it is to love and accept those who seem different.

As an audacious experiment in the art and distribution of motion pictures, Bubble is a twofold triumph. Released on DVD a mere four days after its U.S. theatrical release (in only 32 theaters) in January 2006, this ultra-low-key drama was the first of six films by maverick director Steven Soderbergh (produced in partnership with HDNet Films and 2929 Entertainment, founded by Internet pioneers Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner) to be released simultaneously in theaters, on DVD, and HDNet cable TV, effectively closing the traditional "window" between theatrical and home-video release platforms, and causing many theater owners to boycott the film in protest over its groundbreaking strategy. To accommodate this paradigm-shifting milestone, Soderbergh and Full Frontal screenwriter Coleman Hough reunited to craft a working-class murder mystery that's perfectly suited to its experimental purpose: Quickly shot on high definition video, it's a riveting 72-minute exercise in minimal style, located in the depressed border town of Belpre, Ohio, and employing non-actors from the region who played an active role in creating their mundane everyday dialogue.

Chubby, middle-aged Martha (Debbie Doebereiner) and twentysomething slacker Kyle (Dustin James Ashley) work in a drab doll factory, molding and assembling rubber doll parts, passing dreary lunch-hours with small talk and clinging to modest dreams that will never come true. When an attractive single mother named Rose (Misty Dawn Wilkins) is hired as a temporary employee, Martha's secretly possessive affection for Kyle is silently challenged, leading to an act of violence that obliterates their daily routine. In dramatizing this passive love triangle, Soderbergh (serving, under pseudonyms, as his own cinematographer and editor) emphasizes the stilted, soul-crushing rhythms of lives that have been stunted by loneliness and isolation; they live in a bubble, as it were, and Bubble is arresting in its visual precision, finding unexpected beauty in physical and emotional bleakness. Obviously not the kind of film that draws a blockbuster audience, Bubble exists on its own terms, capable of captivating a receptive audience, regardless of format or context, without losing its experimental edge. DVD extras include a video introduction by Soderbergh, the original casting interviews with the film's non-professional actors, and more. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Graceful, slow motion ten car pile-up where everyone walks away.......2007-05-24

That's the best summary for this film.

My first experience with Steven Soderbergh was TRAFFIC. Loved the ultra-stylized shots and pacing of that movie. Saw OCEAN'S ELEVEN and liked the smart storyline and slick shots of that one, too. So I coupled my love of cinema--especially experimental cinema--with some enjoyable Soderbergh of the past and kept my fingers crossed that his latest offering, stocked with non-professional actors and mostly-improvised dialogue, would entertain me nearly as much as the two aforementioned titles.

A slow, horribly-acted, extremely self-aware and yet surprisingly captivating movie ensued. Slow because it took more than 50 minutes into a 73 minute movie for any real action to occur. Horribly-acted because Soderbergh didn't direct these people very well; regardless of their non-professional status, bad acting still lies on the shoulders of the director. Thumbs down to Soderbergh there. Extremely self-aware because the entire movie felt like a documentary and nothing more, a cross between AMERICAN MOVIE and a first year film student's final project.

Despite all that (or maybe because of it), BUBBLE is riveting. You see the insides of some very despondent lives, feeling as stuck in small town Nowhere, U.S.A., as the characters. Having grown up in a small town that holds no promise, I saw many of my friends and neighbors reflected through the main characters as they become numb to their routines and watch their dreams die. It's sad, and made me extremely grateful that I got out of my hometown when I did and am currently pursuing my dreams.

That said, BUBBLE is like a graceful, slow motion ten car pile-up with no injuries, just people who walk away to drive another day. It's got very little good cinema in it, but what it does have is tremendously moving. If you want a taut thriller or drama, rent THE DEPARTED. If you want to look into lives filled with quiet desperation, rent BUBBLE.

4 out of 5 stars REALITY KILLS.......2007-03-08

Steven Soderbergh's BUBBLE is extremely interesting in the way the movie leads us to think about cinema and its reality. Take, for instance, the scenes when the police officer tells Martha, Kyle and Kyle's mother that Rose has been murdered. In a mainstream movie, the director would have emphasized the surprise or the emotional shock felt by the characters. In BUBBLE, the actors react with such sentences as "Gee, I can't believe that" or "Sorry, could you repeat ?" or even silence, reactions that are not very cinematic but maybe closer to reality than the cinematic tears flowing over the face of a well-known star.

So I don't understand certain ultranegative reactions found here at Amazon. It's clear that movies like BUBBLE don't represent the future of cinema but they are certainly worth a look. To be a movie fan is to try to appreciate or, at least, tolerate the movies that are not one's cup of tea. In every film, there are at least five minutes of pure cinematic pleasure. Not to miss them is one of the greatest pleasures the seventh art can provide to any serious movie buff.

A DVD zone Belpre, Ohio.

4 out of 5 stars Mundane in Name Only.......2007-02-10

`Bubble,' a low budget indie release, has more to it than meets the eye. Seeming to enact a mundane slice of life with a sudden catastrophe, the film shines with authenticity and a haunting, lingering presence long after the credits roll.

Taking place in a small town in Ohio, we follow the plodding lives of three workers at a local doll factory. All the details flow from scene to scene. They talk about the long hours and the humdrum facts of their existence in the break room. Martha (Debbie Doebereiner) is high in seniority. Not much excites her in life. She is there to help in a neighborly way and clarify the finer points of work and fringe benefits at the plant. At home she takes care of her father (Omar Cowan), who, without her help, would probably be put in a nursing home. Kyle (Dustin James Ashley) is her younger co-worker. Everything seems normal until Rose Hilliard (Misty Wilkins) comes to work at the factory. Rose fits in early and well. She has many stories to tell about the nursing home from which she resigned. Subtly, they show some signs of resentment, but, dutifully, church-going Martha builds a bond by agreeing to baby-sit for Rose's two-year-old child, Jesse, while Rose goes out on a date. A surprise to Martha, Kyle arrives to pick up Rose. Even more surprising, Jesse's estranged father, Jake (K. Smith), shows up at her apartment angrily contesting some missing merchandise at his place. It isn't apparent if it is a true accusation or the new date that sets him on a tirade. After the evening is done, a murder takes place, and it isn't until we reach the very end that it all becomes clear.

`Bubble' is so genuine, particularly with police detectives that seem so true to life. They're very official, but friendly, yet probing, in a familiar way--not like James Cagney or Dirty Harry. Stephen Soderbergh sets up the story in the sparest way possible. (It clocks in at about an hour and a quarter, which is not a flaw.) In the end, we find murder in all its passion and in all its trivial pursuit. What makes 'Bubble' so effective is its portrayal of ordinary people who believably act out the inconceivable behind the headlines.

1 out of 5 stars The future of films? Oh, please not.......2007-01-31

Going boldly where no film has gone before, BUBBLE was released simultaneously on DVD, cable TV, and in theaters. Many Silver Screen operators ostensibly boycotted the film in protest over this novel marketing approach. I suggest that, perhaps having gotten a sneak peek at the reel, they decided nobody would pay $10 to see it in their auditoriums once word got out, so avoided it like some hemorrhagic fever.

Set in a moribund mid-western town, citizens Martha (Debbie Doebereiner), Kyle (Dustin Ashley), and Rose (Misty Wilkins) work in a somnolent doll factory. Martha is an unattractive, middle-aged spinster living with Ol' Dad. Kyle, in his irresponsible twenties, is the sort who would benefit immeasurably by a tour with the Marines. Rose is a reasonably attractive single-mother trying to make ends meet. Kyle and Rose start to date for no other apparent reason than they like to take smoke breaks together. One of them is subsequently murdered. Presumably, the crime and its solution are the core of the film's plot, though you wouldn't know it; BUBBLE desultorily dribbles on 45 minutes of its 73-minute run time before the arrival of the police at the crime scene is unexpectedly thrust at the audience. My initial thought was regret that somebody hadn't slaughtered all three.

BUBBLE has been called an "ultra-low-key drama." Gee, you think? I've seen more action and heard more scintillating dialogue on Thanksgiving Day as the dysfunctional family sits around in a slack-jawed, glassy-eyed stupor after the festive overindulgence.

The point of BUBBLE is, presumably, to illustrate the stultifying drabness and banality of everyday life, even when it involves a spasm of violence. But I come to that realization every morning when I drag out of bed, clean the cats' litter box, and trudge off to the 9 to 5. When I go to the movies, I want escapism, and it doesn't even have to be of the uber-action, ultra-FX sort. It only needs to be minimally clever and engaging. BUBBLE falls short of that by any creative yardstick imaginable.

BUBBLE isn't worth the postage the Web-based DVD rental company paid for its roundtrip to and from my mailbox. Boy, did they get snookered.

5 out of 5 stars extraordinary film about ordinary people.......2007-01-25

Barely forty years old and with films like Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Ocean's Eleven, Traffic, and Erin Brockovich to his credit, anything director Steven Soderbergh does is worth a look. In this innovative film he moves from directing mega-stars like George Clooney and Julia Roberts to using non-professional, local people as "actors," who participated in the script, to tell a simple, powerful story. The film was set in their homes and made for a measley $1.6 million. In real life Debbie Doebereiner worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken for twenty four years. In the film she stars as Martha, an overweight woman with orange hair whose life consists of working in a doll factory in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and taking care of her invalid father. Her younger co-worker Kyle does not own a car (he lives in a mobile home with his mother), so she taxis him every day, and generally mothers him. The two are joined in the doll factory by Rose (in real life Misty Dawn Wilkins, a hair dresser), a single mom who like Kyle did not finish high school and who works two jobs struggling to get ahead. The night that Martha babysits Rose's daughter so she and Kyle can go on a date ends in tragedy. These extremely ordinary people are trapped in the banalities of life as grey as the Ohio Valley landscape, living on the "bubble" that in their case bursts. Bubble also makes history as the first film released simultaneously in theaters, on pay-for-view cable television, and on DVD. I loved this deeply human film.

    1 out of 5 stars The Bubble 3-d DVD.......2003-04-16

The 3-d effects on this movie are poor at best. Even adjusting the color on the TV as reccomended does not improve. I normally have no problem viewing 3_D effects, however, this movie only has a select few scenes that actually appear in 3-d. The problem may be in the poor quality of the recording.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad Anaglyph (Red/Cyan) 3D.......2002-12-13

If I'm not mistaken, it appears you need to put the glasses on with the red filter over the left eye. The pair of glasses included were not folded in this manner. Please, if the effect looks sort of odd, see if you have the red over your left eye and not the other way around.

And, BTW, much better quality glasses (plastic, not paper framed) can be had for a few bucks if you look around online. Search on anaglyph and glasses.

    3 out of 5 stars duck!.......2001-08-31

ok...you really have to play around with your tv color adjustment to get the right setting for the 3D effects to work. Basically, you need to set it so that the blue portion of the 3D image matches the blue lens of your 3D glasses.
As for the story, well, it was kinda weak, and very similar to the (as stated above) Twilight Zone episode where the couple wakes up, hungover, after a party in a strange town that seems to have no escape. Here, however, the characters get to the outskirts of town to find a clear wall/dome surrounding the city. I don't want to ruin anything here, so I will just say that the conclusion is really a let down, and very unclear at best.
Very cheesy movie, only recommended for those who love 3D movies no matter WHAT the quality or plot.

    5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic 3d DVD.......2001-03-05

There aren't many 3d videos or dvds around, this one is the pick of the crop. It is easily the best 3d movie ever made, one of the few that didn't trivialise the depth effects and eeriness of 3d, but used to enhance an otherwise enthralling film. Technologically, no other 3d movie was ever so seamlessly and flawlessly made. Without the 3d however, this is still a great film, it has such a great creepy, mysterious feeling, and a deliberately paced build-up and denouement. This is more than worth the modest price!

3 out of 5 stars Good overall, not very much of George!.......2006-02-06

I bought this film because I am a George Clooney-aholic. It's very simple to see in this film that they've released it just to bank off his stardom. There's even a separate trailer on this DVD that semi-features George...it's called the "George Clooney Trailer." I'm not even sure he's in the other one at all. He's probably in the film a total of about 4 minutes...if that. And he certainly does not play the woman's "boyfriend." Basically, he wants her but she wants her husband.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. I thought it was a great story about how you can be unhappy with your life and change it to be happy. She has a very free spirit in this film...her children love & respect her when she loves & respects herself. This is a great film if you're feeling down about your life...sort of like therapy without the big bill!

I can relate to the 40 yr-old wife. I am 70, and consider myself a latent extrovert. I will purchase this video, and send it to my "girl"-friend. She needs to lighten-up.

      Description

In this unique cinematic experiment, acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh brings this tragic story to life with startling realism. A bizarre love triangle is born at a doll factory in a small Midwestern town. Lonely and isolated, long time employees Martha and Kyle have become friends by default in spite of their drastic age difference. Their dynamic is upset by the arrival of a new worker: young, attractive single mother Rose. As Martha grows increasingly wary about Rose's dubious character, she discovers Kyle and Rose developing a relationship of their own. When a murder investigation begins, it calls into question our established assumptions about these characters and life in their small town.

          5 out of 5 stars i love john travolta.......2006-08-31

i really got this because of the boy in the plastic bubble. it was a little cheesy and the picture definition was terrible but john travolta made up for all the bad things of movie!

          2 out of 5 stars Exchange policy.......2006-07-26

I wrote Marengo Films as suggested below to exchange my copy. This was their response:
"We decided because we are a family oriented company not to put out the XXX version. If you have the other cover then we will gladly exchange your copy with our current update... which does have SOME very brief nudity."
So there you have it. Still not the uncut version.

2 out of 5 stars Bait and switch.......2005-10-13

I just purchased this DVD set and expected the original uncut version of the 1973 Harrad Experiment. It is not what you get. It is more like the R-rated version, 90 minutes long, and no frontal nudity. I have the original uncut version on VHS tape from Wizard Video and it is 95 minutes. About the only thing that was uncensored about this tape is the language.

1 out of 5 stars it is still cut.......2005-07-07

Bought this on 18th June 2005, with the idea of getting an uncut version of the Harrad Experiment, but it was cut and has no nudity in it at all...

          2 out of 5 stars Mislead..........2005-06-30

I was mislead into purchasing the wrong version. It had either the "Harrad Experiment (edited version)" alone or you could purchase the "Boy in the Plastick Bubble/Harrad Experiment 1976." So, of course I thought this was the 1976 unedited version of the Harrad Experiment. WRONG. The 1976 was for the Boy in the Plastic Bubble only. the Harrad Experiment was 1973. I didn't even want the Boy in the Plastic Bubble.

Oh, and by the way, it says unclut version for the Harrad Experiment on the back of the DVD once I got it, yet there is very obvious cuts, and of course no nudity. That is because it is the 1973 uncut version, which didn't have nudity in it.

Live and learn. [...] I had always been happy with them up to this.

I do have to say though that the movie was interesting. I'm glad I have it. I just wish I had the true unedited/uncut version.
