Physical Evidence is meant to be a hard-boiled, gritty courtroom whodunit. With two sexy leads, a big-name director (Michael Crighton), and a classy score by legendary composer Henry Mancini (The Pink Panther), everything would appear to be in place. Burt Reynolds, whose career had shifted into low-gear in the late '80s, plays Joe Farley, a hard-living, hard-drinking cop with a volatile temper and plenty of enemies. When he becomes the main suspect in a high-profile murder, tyro public defendant Jenny Hudson (Theresa Russell), eager to make a name for herself, jumps to Joe's defense. Lies, red herrings, and double crosses follow as the body count rises. Jenny is in over her head and soon realizes that her life is in danger, and trouble is, she's falling hard for Joe, but can she trust him? Though the pacing is brisk and there's some good courtroom melodrama, Reynolds and Russell don't exactly ignite up the screen, and most of the scenes play like bad late-night television. Final verdict? A solid guilty pleasure. --Matt Wold

burt scores as a set-up cop,but this turkey needs more help.......2006-06-12
i have to say i think burt looks good here and is very good as the hard drinking cop,it's just that the rest of the movie is so bad that burt's acting gets lost!
a sleeze ball crook is found dead(in a most origanl way,the only other good thing in the movie) and everything points to burt. theresa russell(lost and very poor as a lawyer) takes his case and they set out to find the killer. michael crichton directs this mess with out any real fire except for the opening scenes. and yet another nail in the coffin of burt's career!!
the truth could save him, the lies could kill her.......2001-11-01
This Rank thriller directed by Michael Crichton has a scuzzy screenplay by Bill Phillips, from a story by Phillips and Steve Ransohoff, which is half courtroom drama and half street investigation. The title is explained by the means of execution of a hood being found in the home of Burt Reynolds, a Boston cop on suspension for "unwarranted violence". In spite of the obvious setup, Reynolds is charged with the murder and Theresa Russell becomes his defence attorney. Russell is given more screentime than Reynolds, and the treatment even allows for her breathy mannerisms by making her an inexperienced and ambitious. At one point someone even tells her "I can do without the dramatics" which gets a laugh. As Russell's boyfriend, Ted McGinley benefits from the same effect, with his ineffectualness used for himbo-ism. She and Reynolds banter well, and thankfully the inevitable romance is given a light touch. The only Phillips line that passes for wit is someone referring to the "reverse Midas touch, where everything touched turns to manure", though Reynolds is around to underplay. If the divisive focus and ultimately the seriousness with which we are supposed to take the court case are questionable, Crichton pulls us along with his skill. He creates multiple scenes of messy group anger, and provides a beautifully executed climactic chase. Ned Beatty is also pleasing as the District Attorney, probably the only one who attempts the region dialect.

This episode of Nova profiles the profilers, the FBI agents who track the most evasive killers, those who murder complete strangers. Members of the FBI's elite team who search for "behavioral clues" appear on camera to explain how they are able to study a crime scene and know the probable lifestyle and personality quirks of a serial killer. John Douglas, who pioneered such work at the bureau in the 1970s, talks about how he was able to overcome internal skepticism when his work contributed to solving the Atlanta child murders case in the early 1980s. The documentary takes a close look at a particular case, the murders of prostitutes in Rochester, New York. As the women's bodies were found and a pattern seemed to emerge, FBI experts were consulted. The experts came up with a profile for the murderer, and how the profile aided in the solving of the case is detailed. The killer was captured and confessed, and he fit the profile but for one detail, which turned out to have a logical explanation. This is a fascinating look at how some of law enforcement's sharpest minds do battle with society's most disturbed individuals. --Robert J. McNamara

Customer Reviews:
Actually Not Very Good.......2005-01-07
This film discusses stranger murder. It covers a few of the most extreme cases of stranger murder in the USA in an exploitive way. In the USA there are about 22,000 homicides each year with most of them committed by guns. Over 80% of these homicides are not between strangers. Only a very small percentage of these homicides are sensational cases as discussed by this film.
Due to lack of balance this film gives a wrong idea of the problem of homicides in the USA which is for the most part not between strangers. This film creates unnecessary fear.
go for it.......2002-09-09
This dvd is just extraordinary, so very interesting and extremely well done. Once again, you have John Douglas in it and that's such a treat for anyone interested in profiling.
This dvd is so interesting that you'll be upset when it's over, buy it without hesitation.
A creepy film about creepy people........2002-09-07
My husband and I watched this together. It's not long enough to keep you enthralled, but it is intriguing to delve into the minds of some of these psychos and see what makes them tick. NOVA does a good job as a documentary, but doesn't really go into depth about the makings of a serial killer, or the profiling of a serial killer. The film would have been much better had it been better researched and lengthier, but it is still a fascinating review of some of the famous serial killers of our time.
A Documentary Written Like A Murder Mystery.......2001-02-07
NOVA: MIND OF A SERIAL KILLER examines the horrifying reality of serial killers. This video, narrated by THE X-MEN's Patrick Stewart, looks at how law enforcement (FBI, etc.) deals with this type of criminal. The video examines different types of serial killers (organised, disorganised), the makings of a serial killer, case histories, and the process known as criminal profiling. Criminal profiling has been used to track down & convict serial killers like Wayne Williams & others.
The video also tracks down the investigation of murdered prostitutes in the Rochester area. The investigation led to the capture & conviction of Arthur Shawcross. Shawcross was a recently paroled sex slayer who was found responsible of at least 10 murders. Using criminal profiling along with other evidence, the FBI successfully imprisoned Shawcross to a term of life imprisonment.
NOVA: MIND OF A SERIAL KILLER is a must-have for true crime afficionados. Highly recommended.
One of the best documentaries on the topic.......2001-02-05
This NOVA segment explores the serial murder phenomenon. Although it covers a number of issues related to serial murder, the focus is on the case of Arthur Shawcross, a serial killer who murdered several prostitutes in Rochester, New York. What's fascinating about this particular video is how it builds up to Shawcross' arrest. The documentary does a great job of capturing the sense of terror that must have existed in that community during the time of the murders.
