You may think you're a Bing Crosby fan, but if all you know is Holiday Inn, The Bells of St. Mary's, or the On the Road movies, brother, you only know half the story. Crosby had a rich, long film career, and this collection features some of the best of Der Bingle's lesser-known films: Waikiki Wedding, Double or Nothing , East Side of Heaven, If I Had My Way, and Here Come the Waves. All showcase Crosby's easygoing persona and, of course, plenty of crooning. Waikiki Wedding, for instance, costars Martha Raye, Anthony Quinn, and Shirley Ross, and features the Oscar-winning song "Sweet Leilani" and "Blue Hawaii." The premise of Double or Nothing could be a modern-day reality competition, with four people, including Raye again, feverishly trying to double their inheritance within a 30-day window. East Side of Heaven costars the always appealing Joan Blondell and showcases Crosby at his bemused best as a cabbie with an abandoned baby on his hands, trying desperately (and with a few showtunes) to find the infant's parents. In If I Had My Way, Crosby's a blue-collar worker who helps an orphan girl (Gloria Jean) find her long-lost uncle, and delivers a show-stopping version of the title song. And Here Come the Waves has Crosby as a popular songster enlisting and creating havoc in the Navy, falling for twins (played by Betty Hutton) and singing classics like "That Old Black Magic" and "Ac-cent-u-ate the Positive" (the latter, unfortunately, in blackface). The collection is a great cross-section of Crosby's career and shouldn't be missed by fans of him or of American film in the '40s. --A.T. Hurley

3 out of 5 stars poor bing.......2007-05-24

Bing Crosby is undoubtedly one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century and I am definitely a fan. I had seen most of his better known films from Going My Way to High Society, even Rhythm on the River and Birth of the Blues, but was not prepared for this box! These are not great films, not really interesting films, and not films I want to watch again. You would have to be a true-blue lover of the crooner before feeling justified in buying this set. Sorry Bing.

3 out of 5 stars Focus on the music.......2007-03-27

It is obvious that any purchaser of this DVD set must like Bing Crosby and his voice. If not, watch at your peril. The set consists of 2 early programmers from Paramount, 2 from Universal and one big budget wartime musical. The early Paramounts are the best because Bing's easy going charm seems genuine without any sign of the mechanical manipulation of the later Bing.

- "Double or Nothing" and "Waikiki Wedding" benefit from excellent scores, good supporting casts and witty screenplays with a degree of satire. Martha Raye steals scenes in both and the latter benefits from Shirley Ross who had one of the best voices of any screen vocalist of the thirties. There is a charming scene in the cockpit of a yacht when Bing and Shirley improvise the song "Blue Hawaii" and their warmth and rapport is a delight. The prints of both films are in good condition and have that pleasant "old film" patina.
- "East Side of Heaven" and "If I had My Way" move away from satire to the cornball sentimentality of the later Bing. Each has a hokey song which became a trademark for Bing but they leave me cold. The former is superior and Joan Blondell is a sprightly leading lady. The latter is unbelievably corny and boring. This is the sort of film where the cast are laughing at their jokes while the audience stares in stony disbelief. Poor Gloria Jean is directed to grin all the time whatever the circumstances so you want to strangle her. Her voice is a light falsetto and hardly melds with Bing. The prints of both films are excellent and considerably brighter than the early Paramounts.
- "Here Come the Waves" is wartime propaganda. Betty Hutton plays twins and is surprisingly convincing. There are some excellent songs but the film is too long.

The DVD has no extras, except one trailer, which is reflected in the relatively low price. None of the films are classics, though "Double or Nothing" is a forgotten treasure. If you like Crosby's voice, you'll be happy.

5 out of 5 stars From a collector........2007-03-08

Some ghastly films, but if you're a collector of Bing Crosby's films you have to take the good with the bad. "East Side of Heaven" is probably the best of the bunch.
I'm grateful that they are available, and the singing is great. It's the plots which don't really wear well.

5 out of 5 stars Bing's the Best.......2007-01-10

Whilst not being near the best of Crosby's films, this welcome selection of rarities is great to see on DVD. Quality of transfer is high - Good light entertainment with a great selection of songs. Let's hope MCA/Universal release more of Bing's lesser known films.

This is the best set of Bing CDs that has been issued. Quality of prints is excellent and the set was not announced or expected. May more be issued.

Product Description

Based on a play by Sidney Kingsley, THE BOWERY BOYS movies proved to be a popular look at life in a poverty-stricken New York neighborhood. Also called THE DEAD END KIDS, the actors who portrayed the boys played up some hair-raising situations for laughs, creating a series of endearing films which spanned several decades. This collection includes 10 of the best BOWERY BOYS movies.

1 out of 5 stars I Don't own it.......2007-05-11

I'm an East Side Kids, Dead End Kids, and Bowery Boys fan. One of the biggest reasons I won't buy it is they don't tell you what movies you're getting. I have the other collection sold here called "The East Side Kids 10 Bowery Classics" and it's good and would suggest getting that one instead of this one. Especially after reading other reviews about how poor the picture quality is and the logo in the lower right hand corner through the whole movie stinks also.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2006-08-18

I thought this would include at least some of the Bowery Boys movies, based on the title. But it turns out none of those movies are available legally. No matter, the East Side Kids are still pretty funny, and you can see how they evolved into the famed Bowery Boys. My other complaint is that the overall picture and sound quality are not the best!

1 out of 5 stars Ten Blurs.......2006-04-22

The Passport editions of ten of the East Side Kids movies is a cheap way to get to know one of the fun series of the early 1940's. Cheap is in both senses.

I had already collected a set of Alpha Video and Platinum Disc Corporation editions but had hoped to find editions with better picture and sound quality. Passport didn't do it.

Only occasionally would the quality even equal that of Alpha or Platinum. Usually the quality was markedly worse. There was even missing footage. For example, the opening scene of "Bowery Blitzkrieg" on Alpha and Platinum has Danny (Bobby Jordan) drilling his economics lesson while using a punching bag. Passport starts the movie from a later scene, Muggs (Leo Gorcey) bullying the bad guy.

Passport puts a faint "Bowery Boys / East Side Kids" logo in the lower-right corner throughout. The other two editions do not do this.

No edition has any meaningful extras. I have little hope these films will be cleaned up, Criterion style.

Alpha Video tends to have the best quality on its single-film DVD's, but Platinum's four-paks come close and are more cost-effective. Passport runs last on all counts.

I was looking for the series that had the bowery boys in the malt shop at the start of each movie. I think this was the later ones. these are good but not what I wanted.

GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE is nice and sharp, with good audio. This spooky entry involves BELA LUGOSI and some Nazi spies.

SPOOKS RUN WILD is a little softer but the audio is still good. The boys meet BELA LUGOSI again, this time in a spooky old house full of secret passageways!

Based on the manga by "Oh! great" (Ito Oogure), Air Gear (2006) elevates in-line skating to a high-tech extreme sport, much the way Eureka Seven pushes snowboarding. Minami "Ikki" Isuki is a tough-talking high school student who freeloads at the home of the four Noyamano sisters. After getting the wasabi beaten out of him by a gang of Storm Riders, Ikki discovers the world of air treks: motorized in-line skates that go at extraordinary speeds. Not surprisingly, he turns out to be a natural rider, quickly picking up skills and catching a brief vision of "the Road in the Sky." But Ikki has to face rival gangs, beginners' races, and getting a job to pay for his skates before he can aspire to the mystical aspects of the sport. Although the misfit hero, athletic challenges, and other elements in the series are standard-issue shonen (boys') anime, the computer-animated racing shots, skillful cutting and winning voice performances make Air Gear a lot of fun. (Rated TV MA SL, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, profanity, nudity toilet and risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

Description

Based on the hit manga series by Oh Great!, Air Gear is a non-stop rollercoaster ride featuring cool characters, cutting-edge CGI animation, and of course lot of action!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars FLYING WITH YOUR FEET.......2007-04-09

Ikki Minami prides himself on being a tough guy, being the leader of a gang on the east side of his town, but he meets his match in a showdown with the Skull Saders. The Saders do not fight fair. They are "Storm Riders" who use "Air Treks", roller blades equipped with tiny 3 kilowatt motors that let them move at extreme speeds and do superhuman feats. These engines are so powerful that the air treks almost let them fly. After taking a beating and wetting himself, Ikki decides to take revenge but first, he needs to get his hands on some air treks. Fortunately, the family he lives with, the four Noyamano sisters, are secretly a Storm Rider team known as "Sleeping Forest". Their name alone inspires fear and respect in other riders. Ikki steals one of the sister's air treks and sets out on his own to master this new extreme sport and take vengence on the Skull Saders. He also wants to meet an beautiful air trekker named Simca that he's been admiring. Unfortunately for Ikki, he's going to find out that the world of the Storm Riders is a bit more complicated than skating around and picking fights.

The thing that catches your eye when first viewing Air Gear is the great character designs by Oh Great! They are so beautiful and instantly appealing and cool that you are sucked straight in regardless of how ludicrous the storyline is. I mean, battling roller bladers with powerful engines on their skates? Get over it! Once you accept the basic premise, you're really going to enjoy yourself. The pacing and cinematography of this show is great. To me, it looks like they spent a lot of money getting Air Gear right. The soundtrack is good as well, with mixes of trance, techno, and jazz that suits the hip nature of the anime. Fantastic first volume.

4 out of 5 stars Good Start, Good Finish, Let's Hope It Stays That Way.......2007-02-10

How does a kid live with 4 girls and basically know nothing about them? How does a kid live in a neighborhood filled with the most popular new type of inline skates and not know much about them either? I guess you could say that Air Gears main character Ikki is just about the most clueless guy on earth. Air Gear is based on a world of Inline skates called the AT, which is short for Air Trecks. The AT's technology is far beyond the skates we know. It has a built in motor that allow the skater to go to up to crazy speeds, do crazy tricks, and even fly if at the right speed. All the basics you need to know about the AT's is explained right in the beginning but you still have to watch more to completely figure out the known and unknown. AT riders form groups called Storm Riders that battle each other.

Air Gear was a pleasant little Saturday afternoon watch for me and it brightened a nasty cold day. To start the music is perfect for this stylish and action packed anime and it plays a major part on controlling the mood of the series. The action is cool; you don't get to see too many high flying tricks but more grinds than anything. A lot of the story is focused more on Ikki battling Storm Riders for their logos and to basically disband the teams so there will be one less team and he can make it to the top. Though the conflicts of the series are showed right off the bat the plot still isn't completely visible until you get into volume two. So for those who think the series is just playing around at first trust me the story gets better and more complex. I think that the total outcome of this first volume is descent and I'm definitely ready to see more but there are some flaws.

One problem is the fact that not every detail about the characters is addressed. Like who the heck are the girls that Ikki lives with and who are they to him? There may have been something saying who they were but I don't remember seeing it. Doing some Searching I found out that the girls are the Noyamano sisters and are Ikki's benefactors. Either way it's still a mystery of the history between them and why they took him in. With that said Air Gear is set for a nice looking future. The characters are great fun and very funny, the animation is very colorful and sharply done, and the voice actors sound pretty good also. So get ready for volume 2 because trust me after volume one there is no going back.

3 out of 5 stars Maybe a 3.5?.......2007-02-07

I norm dont watch anime like this but I bought it and wanted to give it a try. I seemed to like it. But it wasnt really good but it wasnt bad either. Which is why I have it a 3, maybe a 3.5 I need to see more of the series beofore I say anything else. So far it seems like a good anime. Only time can tell for me though.

4 out of 5 stars First episode free.......2007-01-14

I recently found this series via some random web searches and you can watch the first episode at IGN at http://media.tv.ign.com/media/873/873849/vids_1.html . The series definitely has some great promise and I look forward to the release of the first episode. I have also been starting to read some of the Mangas and they also seem pretty good. Judging by those two things I rate this series at a 4 for now only cause I have yet to see much into the series.

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining Mystery Adventure.......2007-06-21

The film begins in an urban setting. The East Side Kids are taken in and placed on a bus for a ride into the country for two weeks. They hear a warning about a maniac who has killed three persons and may be in the vicinity. At night the boys hear some howling. A stranger comes to visit the long empty Billings estate. Dr. Van Grosch shows up next and asks the station master to keep his presence secret. The boys go exploring the countryside at night; a shot is fired and the boys seek refuge at a lone house. The owner leads them upstairs to a bedroom so PeeWee can rest well. The others will stay in another room. [There is no electricity in those days.]

PeeWee awakes and walks out of the room. The boys show up and search for him. They wander around the house. Some of the jokes are no longer funny. A stranger offers a ride to the nurse and she accepts. In town the men get their firearms to search for the monster at the Billings estate. The identity of the mysterious stranger is revealed. Linda screams and the men rush to her aid. The monster is caught for a happy ending. [This story will not strain your brain.]

3 out of 5 stars FUN BECAUSE OF BELA.......2004-09-29

There isn't much middle ground when if comes to opinions on the east side kids/Bowery Boys. People seem to love them or hate them. I've always been a fan since I was a kid and a local channel used to show one of their movies every Saturday afternoon.

Spooks Run Wild is the first meeting of the Kids and Bela Lugosi. The second being Ghosts on the Loose. In it..the kids are travelling to a camp out in the sticks where the "monster killer" just happens to be on the loose.

The kids sneak out of their cabin in the middle of the night to walk into town. Cutting through a cemetary Pee wee is shot with buckshot by a night watchman. The rest of the boys carry pee wee to a mysterious old mansion on top of a hill.

The mansion just happens to be home of Bela Lugosi (Nardo the Magician)and his midget assistant Luigi (played by Freaks star Angelo Rossitto).

Well as you might expect the kids run wild throughout the mysterious mansion, hiding out from Lugosi who they are convinced is the killer.

Along the way there's the usual slapstick humor that the kids are known for with Muggs (Leo Gorcey) bossing around the rest of the group. Scruno (Sammy Morrison)steals as he does in ghosts on the Loose with his wide-eyed panic routine.

Of course, Lugosi would turn out to be (once again) the red-herring and the real killer is later revealed as the kids save the day and catch the fiend.

Good fun and just over an hour so it's not a great commitment. Lugosi is his usual menacing self who somehow doesn't remember to tell the kids he's a magician just to make it even more menacing.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, In a Goofy Sort of Way.......2004-07-08

The Bowery Boys have always struck me as a little creepy. Men in their forties pretending to be pre-teens has struck me as very jarring (sort of like Roberto Benigni in "Pinocchio"). Still, you could find worse comedians, and in this movie, they at least have the benefit of starring with the always wonderful Bela Lugosi. Basically, it's just the Bowery Boy's running around Lugosi's haunted house. It's kind of fun, in an odd way. The only major drawback is the presence of some racist jokes ("Put on some whitewash before you sneek up on me in the dark").
The DVD from Alpha looks good enough. Some shots are scratchy, others are dark, and the blacks aren't as solid as they should be, but it's as clear as you're likely to find "Spooks Run Wild." Unsurprisingly, there are no extras.

4 out of 5 stars East Side Kids meet Bela Lugosi for the first time........2004-03-17

The East Side boys make more trouble again. Usually they are sent back to reform school. But this time they are put in a bus and taken to a small town. At a soda fountain shoppe, they hear on the radio that a "monster" killer is on the loose. The boys have aroom to sleep in at the camp. At a gas station, Bela Lugosi as "Nardo" (Dracula [1931]) comes to town with his midget assistant, "Luigi" (Angelo Rossitto). They are looking for the Billings Estate. The gas station attendent says no one has been there since the killings ten years ago. Later, the gas station attendant meets Dr. Von Grosch (Dennis Moore). He tells the doctor he knows who he is and that he is looking for the "monster" killer. The man up ahead is the monster killer. The gas staion attendent keeps the secret of Von Grosch being in town. The boys go roamin' and they come across the graveyard at the Billings Estate. They are taken into the estate and there they meet the killer. They must stay in this spooky manor overnight. They want to get back to the camp, but they can't leave Pee Wee (played by David Gorcey, Leo's brother) who is under a spell. This is one of the more entertaining and popular films of the series. Next film in the series is: MR. WISE GUY (1943). The East Side Kids "Spooks Run Wild", Donald Haines was in World War II. It is not known if he was Missing In Action or died.
Bela Lugosi with dwarf Angelo Rossitto later appeared in SCARED TO DEATH (1947).

This new item from MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT contains only a handful of titles previously released by them.

NIGHT SCREAMS is an excellent collection of mostly-forgotten fright and suspense films that's sure to please all vintage movie fans.

Some NIGHT SCREAMS trivia:

THE GHOST AND THE GUEST was written by funnyman Morey Amsterdam (of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW).

A SHOT IN THE DARK has been used as a movie title on eight separate occasions.

THE FACE AT THE WINDOW is the name of a dozen different movies.

THE TELL-TALE HEART is the repetition winner however, having been used as a title for 21 films! This 1960 version is not an adaptation of the Poe short story of the same name. The only connection to Poe might be the lead character, who just happens to be called Edgar.

MANFISH, on the other hand, was actually based on the writings of Edgar Allan Poe.

Ava Gardner appearing together with those goofy Bowery Boys? Yes, it's not only true, but the fellas were given top billing in GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE.

If you think you'd enjoy these films, then MILL CREEK's previously issued SUSPENSE 50 MOVIE PACK COLLECTION may also be of interest to you.

2 out of 5 stars Gang must help Gabriel Dell. Gale Storm co-stars........2004-04-30

This is the ninth film for the East Side Kids (Leo Gorcey, Bobby Jordan, Huntz Hall, Gabriel Dell, Bobby Stone, Sunshine Sammy Morrison, David Gorcey). A new member is introduced as "Stash", Stanley Clements joins the gang. Since they helped the police in finding the crooks behind the magnesium ring operation in LET's GET TOUGH, now they are trying to help Gabriel Dell hide from the police. Gabriel wants to break away from the gang and swears he is never coming back. Just as he trys to go out the hide-out door, Officer Joe Reagan (Roger Pryor) is hot on Gabriel's trail. He looks around the hide-out. Nothing. When the boys think the coast is clear, Gabriel tells the gang again he is not coming back. He opens the door and Officer Reagan is right there and he overheard the boys clear their names. So Gabriel is off to jail for participation in a hold-up. Gale Storm plays Danny's (Bobby Jordan) sister. Notice the ad-lib Huntz Hall does at the end of the film. Leo Gorcey puts water on himself after kissing a nurse. Huntz Hall spits some water back at him.
The next film in the series: 'NEATH BROOKLYN BRIDGE (1942).

All singing! All dancing! All proletariat! Who knew the Soviets made musicals? The evidence is there in Dana Ranga's giddy documentary, which offers clips from dozens of musicals made between 1930 and 1970 from the Communist bloc. From rural Russian ditties with synchronized tractors and overall-clad farmers singing about the five-year plan to backstage melodramas and East German beach movies, this documentary reveals an entire hidden genre of Communist cinema. What makes them so fascinating is the Soviet bloc's uneasy truce with the musical, by its very nature a celebration of love and romance and plenty. How do to you turn that into a message of service and sacrifice? They tried, certainly--Stalin loved musicals--and throughout the 1930s and '40s Soviet studios created Busby Berkeley-like production numbers on assembly lines and sent field hands into song with synchronized pitchforks (no dancing allowed on the job, according to the censors) while harvesting their fields.

Later musicals show more cinematic sophistication and even a winking playfulness with the genre. The clips are marvelous--some surreal, some dynamic and delirious, and some simply absurd--but to Ranga they are more than simply kitsch. Interviews with the creators and the audiences of these films reveal how much these utopian bursts of energy and joy were treasured in dreary times. Ranga creates a nostalgia for a giddy, goofy genre that this country never even knew existed. Film history has rarely been so much fun. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Bolsheviks with bounce.......2005-11-19

Although a documentary about Communist movie musicals sounds like a Christopher Guest parody, this fascinating 1997 German production is the real deal, comrade. From the 1930s through the 1960s, over forty Iron Curtain films combined Socialism with song, labor with lyrics, propaganda with pirouettes, Russkies with rhythm, and Bolsheviks with bounce. Audiences in Russia, Bulgaria, East Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia were treated to such tune-laden escapist fare as TRACTOR DRIVERS, THE SWINEHERD AND THE SHEPHERD, VACATION ON THE BLACK SEA, COSSACKS OF THE KUBAN RIVER, and HARD WORK-HAPPY HOLIDAY. In addition to interviews with filmmakers, critics, and older Iron Curtain moviegoers sharing their youthful memories, the astonishingly rare footage unearthed by documentarians Dana Ranga and Andrew Horn will come as a revelation to even the most seasoned film buff. Now, that was entertainment-da!

4 out of 5 stars If only socialism had been more fun.......2005-03-10

My credentials as a fan of screen musicals are suspect. In 56 years, I can count on one hand the number I've seen that I thought worth viewing more than once: CHICAGO (2003), EVITA (1996), HELLO DOLLY (1969), THE KING AND I (1956), and (dare I admit it?) MARY POPPINS (1964). Having said that, however, I found EAST SIDE STORY illuminating. During the Bad Old Days of the Cold War, what average American would've thought that the Warsaw Pact/Evil Empire was making musicals? And had been doing so for many years.

EAST SIDE STORY is a documentary roughly covering the period 1930-1970, when the Soviet Union, and its satellites after 1945, struggled to create Hollywood-like entertainment for the proletariat masses without sacrificing the central tenants of socialism. The fact that only forty musicals were filmed during this period suggests that the two concepts blended as efficiently as oil and water.

Chronologically, the documentary begins with the 1934 Soviet musical comedy, THE JOLLY FELLOWS, a rather unsocialist production that apparently only made it to the local cinemas after Stalin overrode the censors - a bad career move for them, no doubt - and personally approved it. As a matter of fact, Uncle Joe was a big fan of the genre, and gave a copy of a favorite reel to FDR as a gift. In any case, the visual narrative proceeds through several more Soviet releases, including the 1939 film with the catchy title TRACTOR DRIVERS and the 1946 COSSACKS OF THE KUBAN featuring synchronized wheat harvesting, and ending with the Polish, Czech, Romanian and (mostly) East German musicals of the 50s and 60s. Indeed, the costuming, hairstyles, and choreography of the DDR productions are so similar to Tinseltown fare that, if I squint my eyes against the cheesy sets and block out the German lyrics, I might just as well be watching a teenage beach blanket saga filmed in Southern California.

EAST SIDE STORY is liberally sprinkled with interviews with aging actors, production lackeys, and cinema historians. (Early on, it's pointed out that none of the films' directors have survived. A purge maybe, or just old age?) They establish quite clearly the dichotomy that existed between the desire to entertain audiences with big box office hits and the doctrinaire restrictions imposed by socialist ideology that tended to cramp the screenwriter's style. One of those interviewed wistfully observed, "If only socialism had been more fun." Gee, I don't know. I can see Stalin reprising Dick van Dyke's role as the dancing chimney sweep in MARY POPPINS, can't you?

    4 out of 5 stars Worth a trip uptown!.......2003-08-11

Enjoyed the satire, footage, and comedy genre surrounding the story. Does anybody know about the other movie called, "EAST SIDE STORY", starring Mark Anthony, produced in the mid-eighties?
    Let me know!

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating, tells all you need to know about repression.......2003-02-07

There were 40 musicals made in the Eastern communist countries. The audiences loved them but the academics, politicians, party leaders and censors barely tolerated them and tried to force them to serve the grim worker mentality of the state. On the one hand, these musicals are oddly entertaining. On the other, they are a grim reminder of how human happiness and the human spirit is so often strangled by political and religious repressive systems. People want to laugh, love, and, yes, sing and dance. Too bad that that is so threatening to so many. This is an interesting documentary that was well worth watching.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly researched, inaccurate slop........2002-10-31

This film must have been made by committee. No one cared about it, I'm certain. It misrepresents itself, firstly, as an authority on Soviet musicals. When there's almost no Soviet musicals in it! For all practical purposes, it's only about East Germany after WWII. Not only is the extensive and mind-bending phenomenon of the post-WWII Soviet musical not present. At one point in this documentary the narrator says something like: there were no Soviet musicals after the 60's! The interviewees have almost nothing to say. The musicals that are there, are not in anyway well-represented. Wait for the real documentary. This simply isn't it.

2 out of 5 stars Another Haunted House Mystery.......2007-06-21

The East Side Kids are practicing singing for a wedding. The couple plan to move to a house in the suburbs. The previous owners say the house next door is haunted. Emil gives orders to the real estate agent to buy back the house on Elm Street. We see the young bride (Ava Gardner). The old couple call the police to report strange events at 322 Elm Street. The boys show up to clean up for the new couple, but pick the wrong house. They "borrow" the furnishings.

Mr. & Mrs. John Gibson show up at a hotel, and get a message. They get a warning about their house. Then Emil shows up and becomes upset by the presence of the boys. There are jokes about portraits. The boys find a printing press in the cellar with Nazi pamphlets. The policemen upstairs hear nothing! Then the Gibsons show up to live in their new home. The furnishings are gone. Jack Gibson calls the police to report what the boys found. But the printing press has disappeared. Next the press is found in Jack Gibson's house. But the boys direct the police to the right place for a happy ending. [Note Bela Lugosi's sneeze.]

4 out of 5 stars Good comedy entry in Dead End Kids series.......2004-12-22

But the only problem as I see it is there is hardly any even bogus supernatural elwment (despite Dracula--Bela Lugosi--being in it). All the boys do while in the house is hear a few noises and see someone stand in a picture frame. Their first entry with Lugosi (Spooks Run Wild) was a much better entry for the horror-comedy genre. This is a great, entertaining film but it has little to do with horror. Ghost and Mr. Chcken it ain't!

4 out of 5 stars The East Side Kids meet Bela Lugosi again!.......2004-03-20

The East Side Kids (Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Bobby Jordan, Sammy Morrison, Bobby Stone, Billy Benedict, Stanley Clements) meet Bela Lugosi (Dracula [1931]) again! They met him before as "Nardo" in SPOOKS RUN WILD" (1941). This is the second East Side Kids film William Beaudine has directed since CLANCY STREET BOYS (1943). William Beaudine believes in one takes only if it can be done. It was not rare for an East Side Kid film to be done in six days. Boy did he keep a "one-take" this time! Bela thought he would have some fun. The scene where Bela Lugosi is inside the painting and sneezes the offensive word, "s***", was the first take. So Beaudine left it in the film. The plot this time: Jack (Rick Vallin) is going to marry Betty (Ava Gardner) and they have bought a huge house two miles out in the country from the subway. Later, the agent tells him, the house next door is haunted. Mugg's (Leo Gorcey) gets word that the Katzman's mob (an in-joke to producer, Stan Katzman) will crash the wedding. Bela Lugosi as "Emil" is in town. He doesn't want Jack to have that house on Elm Street. Even Emil's assistant tells him the house next door is haunted. The assistant gives him some cash and a business card to call to close the deal. Of course, he will not. Later, the boys find the card on the floor. The boys decide to decorate Jack's new house , but they go by the number on the card and go to the haunted house instead. They don't know the mistake they made. Watch the fun begin with the boys and Bela Lugosi. This is Bobby Jordan's last appearance with the East Side Kids until BOWERY CHAMPS (1944). Then re-joined them for the Bowery Boys films. The next films in the series: Mr. Muggs Steps Out (1943), MILLION DOLLAR KID (1944).

5 out of 5 stars Have to love em!.......2003-07-14

The East Side Kids/Dead End Kids/Bowery Boys did it again. All your favorite guys are back again for some more fun. If you like Abbott & Costello...The Three Stooges....or The Little Rascals/Our Gang then your going to like these guys. Its fun for the whole family, good viewing you can trust with the kids. Add Bela Lugosi and a little old time spooky fun. Its good to finally see an almost forgotten piece of film history restored thanks to our friend Loyd Kaufman at Troma Studios.

2 out of 5 stars The East Side Kids Meet Bela Lugosi, Again........2000-09-13

Don't be fooled by the title. Ghosts have nothing to do with this movie. This is another encounter of our hapless heroes with the dark master of the poverty row horror film. This time the East Side Kids find Bela and his gang of Nazi spies occupying a local "haunted" house. These little low budget comedies don't pretend to be any more than they are. This film has the added attraction of a very young Ava Gardner in the unlikely role of Huntz Hall's sister. Bela Lugosi had become a low-budget standby at this point in his career. The East Side Kids, if not lovable, are tolerable in small doses. Due to a misunderstanding that is worthy of the Three Stooges, the boys mistake the deserted house for a honeymoon cottage that needs a good cleaning and decorating. The spooky manse has secret panels, revolving bookcases, paintings with moving eyes, and mysterious people creeping around. The mild thrills and chills are suitable for family viewing. There are a few low brow chuckles, but The East Side Kids and Bela Lugosi had better luck with the earlier "Spooks Run Wild," reviewed elsewhere in Amazon.com. Adjust your expectations accordingly. ;-)
