Description
A swarthy, good looking American named Caine (Burt Reynolds) arrives in a small, dusty, "hole-in-the-ground" town in the Sudan after having escaped government soldiers who nearly seized him with a truckload of illegal arms. Later, Caine, looking for an escape from the police, meets up with Anna (Silvia Pinal) and Dr. Mallare (Barry Sullivan), an ichthyologist looking for rare fish specimens. Anna convinces Caine to sign on as a deck hand. That night, however, Caine finds out that he is more than just a deck hand - he is a partner. The drama grows as they dive for $2 Million worth of gold in shark-infested waters, and Caine realizes he is off to an appointment with dangerous sharks - and with death. - Staring Burt Reynlds with Arthur Kennedy, Manuel Alvarado, Carlos Barry, Barry Sullivan & Silvia Pinal Original Music by Rafael Moroyoqui - Cinematography by Raúl Martínez Solares Art Direction by Manuel Fontanals - Film Editing by Carlos Savage Associate Producer José Luis Calderón Produced by Mark Cooper & Skip Steloff Directed by Samuel Fuller

Girl power (or if you prefer, woman power) gets a goofy boost in My Super Ex-Girlfriend, a breezy rom-com that's as fun as it is forgettable. As devised by former Simpsons writer Don Payne and directed by comedy veteran Ivan (Ghostbusters) Reitman, the premise is certainly promising, and much of that promise is gamely fulfilled. When a New York building designer named Matt (Luke Wilson) discovers that his new girlfriend Jenny (Uma Thurman) is actually a crime-fighting, disaster-solving superhero named G-Girl who's also needy, neurotic, and unpredictably volatile, he realizes he's got to dump her as politely as possible or face the potentially deadly consequences. Since he's really in love with a cute colleague (Anna Faris), and since the arch-villain Professor Bedlam (Eddie Izzard) has been in love with G-Girl since they were outcast pals in high school, you can easily figure out where the comedy is going. But getting there is surprisingly enjoyable, given the rather flat execution of a pretty good idea. The shark-tossing scene is a highlight, and other memorable scenes compensate for Reitman's embrace of a bitchy female stereotype that's either insulting or truthful, depending on your own romantic experience as the dumper or dumpee. Rainn Wilson (from the American version of TV's The Office) performs the obligatory sidekick duties, and comedian Wanda Sykes is just plain annoying in a shrill and unnecessary role. Silly? You bet. Go in expecting that, and you won't be disappointed. --Jeff Shannon

Description

SUPERstars Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson deliver unstoppable fun in this hilarious hit comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Stripes, Meatballs).

Matt Saunders (Wilson) thinks he's found the perfect girlfriend in Jenny Johnson (Thurman), who just happens to be smart, sexy...and a superhero. But when Jenny turns out to be a needy, neurotic mess, Matt wants to call it quits. Jenny is crushed by the news and will stop at nothing to exact sweet revenge.

It's an outrageous super-comedy that proves breaking up can be hard to do—and downright dangerous!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Absurd! (In a very good way!).......2007-07-02

Reitman was successful in creating an absolutely farce. An absolute parody of the superhero genre, melding with the romantic comedy. Hilarious at times, even slightly erotic (mostly due to the presence of the exotic Uma Thurman) this playful jaunt takes the jilted lover story to new heights... literally.

A crazed ego-charged superhero, Luke Wilson and the ever-hilarious Anna Faris lead a cast of characters that never cease to entertain.

In the spirit of National Lampoons, this movie is pure Reitman comedic genius.

2 out of 5 stars Missed Opportunity!.......2007-06-23

Great concept for a story, however, the writers missed this one by many miles! Uma Thurmans character was a little over the top. The story missed many, many opportunities to explore the content they actually brought up. Some of the things you see in the trailer were not nearly as funny as you thought it would be. There is just so much more they could have done, yet they choose to lean on the obsurd, stupid and idiotic.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the trailers.......2007-05-31

I tend to be a little picky about which movies I watch, especially for those rare theaters visits, but to some degree for my rentals pick as well. The factor I most often use to influence my decisions are the films' trailers. Usually they are a decently reliable indicator of whether I will like a film, although once in a while it proves to be inaccurate. Unfortunately, this was one of those times.

We thought the trailers were funny and as a result, we figured that the movie would be as well. Though there were some humorous moments, the bulk of the movie tended to bog down in its attempt at a quirky romantic comedy and its clumsy effort at still also being a slapstick comedy, with the resulting awkward moments and slow pacing. The sappy and insipidly convenient ending is remarkably anti-climactic and so banal that people in the theater actually groaned aloud.

Luke Wilson played his usual (invariably unchanging) character of the meek and whiney guy who is the Anglo-fied version of the traditional film nebbish who never gets a break or seems to have any particular strengths, but ultimately ends up on top. Uma Thurman was funny in her role, but ultimately could not overcome the weak script and disappointing movie. Anna Faris is likable and cute as always, but like Uma, she was in a weak film that she couldn't save. Rainn Wilson, who does such an effective job as Dwight in NBC's "The Office", isn't as effectively cast in this role, though he does what he can. Eddie Izzard, a talented actor and comedian, has his performance wasted as well. Wanda Sykes, who is normally very funny, is just shrill in this film.

The film overall is a mild disappointment. It's not terrible, but it's not as funny as you would hope or expect, in spite of some humorous moments. I would have given 2.5 stars if it were an option, but it doesn't merit 3 in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars My Super Ex-Girlfriend.......2007-05-19

I would recommend this movie to people that like super heros. I thought it was funny and entertaining. I may review this movie many times, as I have seen it twice. Uma Thurman is a great actress and she adds, "great" to the word entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars A rainy day fun Movie.......2007-05-07

I personally found this movie to be fun. It doesn't tax your brain, it explains why she has super powers, and in the end everything is tied up nicely in time for you to go to bed without any nagging questions. Its not Superman ... its not Spiderman ... its not even Superwoman ... but it is a fun, rainy day movie to watch, laugh and talk through with friends without becoming lost in the plot along the way. Uma Thurman was really cute I thought, as a super hero. A real person, with the same problems and idiocies and paranoia as most of us, but with the added weight of being a well known super hero. She did a really great job of showing the human side, because when it came down to it, she was just human.

When a shark accidentally clobbers himself, a small fish named Oscar (voiced by Will Smith, I, Robot) just happens to be around, prompting everyone to believe that he killed the shark himself. This lie soon makes Oscar a celebrity, worshipped by the general mass of fish, wooed by a glittering golddigger (Angelina Jolie, Girl, Interrupted), missed by his best friend (Renee Zellweger, Cold Mountain)--and hunted by the godfather of great whites (Robert De Niro, Goodfellas). Can a vegetarian shark named Lenny (Jack Black, School of Rock) get Oscar out of this mess? The formulaic story of Shark Tale never reaches the giddy heights of Pixar's output (Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., Toy Story) or the freewheeling comedy of Shrek, but it's capably told and impeccably animated--the sheer technical skill is stunning. Kids won't get the mobster jokes or the other pop-culture references, but they'll enjoy it nonetheless. --Bret Fetzer

Description

A comic catch from the studio that brought you Shrek, Shark Tale is a hilarious hit and "a wonderful under-the-sea adventure for movie lovers of all ages!" (Clay Smith, Access Hollywood)

Oscar (Will Smith), a lowly tongue-scrubber at the local Whale Wash, becomes an improbable hero when he tells a great white lie. To keep his secret, Oscar teams up with an outcast vegetarian shark, Lenny (Jack Black), and the two become the most unlikely of friends. When his lie begins to unravel, it's up to Oscar's loyal friend Angie (Renée Zellweger) and Lenny to help him stand up to the most feared shark in the water (Robert De Niro) and find his true place in the reef.

Great kids movie teaches a lesson on streching the truth. Really cute plot the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air -- underwater!.......2007-07-01

I can't figure out why people comparing this to "Finding Nemo." They are not alike, and comparisons really are pointless. In fact, Shark Tale is stylistically distinct from most other animated films of recent years. It also has its own brand of humor, which is funny in ways quite unlike the typical Pixar/Disney offering we've gotten used to.

Shark Tale is informed by urban culture, which is why *this* reef is traversed by buses (whales) and police cars (orcas), and has a giant screen TV above it all, featuring live news feeds, commercials, and so on. It's much, much closer to the "real" world of humans than one is used to seeing.

In Finding Nemo, one can't recognize the face of Albert Brooks in Marlin the cartoon fish. But in this movie, Oscar is physically reminiscent of Will Smith, Don Leno really reminds one of Robert DeNiro, and Sikes is, somehow, a dead ringer for Martin Scorsese.

In my view, this adds to the humor and the fun. Don Leno is written as a broad cariacature of Mafia dons, and DeNiro has of course played the ultimate human version -- Don Corleone, in the Godfather trilogy. There are other movie in-jokes all over the place.

A gang of shrimp, formerly destined for Don Leno's dinner, escape -- and when they later find a chance to attack Don Leno, the head shrimp says "Say hello to my little friends" -- a line from Al Pacino's famous turn in Scarface, made hilarious by the oddball new setting.

When Oscar defeats Lenny in a staged fight, and poses for the news cameras to publicize his new role as the Sharkslayer, he recites other movie lines that are inane, even surrealistic in this context, like "You can't handle the truth" (Jack Nicholson's line from A Few Good Men), and then "You had me at hello" (Renée Zellweger's line from Jerry Maguire).

The latter line demonstrates just how shallow Oscar is (he can't even come up with original words to boast with), while showing how mindless and uncritical the crowds are (they cheer the line despite its nonsensicality). Meanwhile, it's an inside joke for movie viewers who note that Ms. Zellweger is in this film, too, playing Oscar's "true" love interest, Angie.

Sikes' henchmen are two jellyfish, and the filmmakers depicted them as Jamaican rasta men, with tentacles in lieu of long dreadlocks. They then typecast reggae stars Ziggy Marley and Doug E. Doug in the roles. They're perfect as the character voices, while also providing great music for the soundtrack.

The film's distinctive style may cause one to overlook the skill that must have been required to depict all these characters as fish, with more-or-less realistic swimming motions, who nevertheless manage goofy slapstick right out of vaudeville. If you pay attention you notice Don Leno's consigliere, Luca, pouring a cup of tea -- which, of course, flows out of the cup and into the surrounding water before Luca can drink it. I mean, this kind of stuff is silly, but (in my view) is funny mostly because nobody in the film calls attention to it.

So: great voicework, a fun story, romance plus suspense, lots of sight gags and other humor, fine animation and a great soundtrack.

The ONLY reason I held back from five full stars is because it really isn't appropriate for the very young -- like, under six or seven at least (in my view). I find it frustrating at how hard it is to find a good animated film that doesn't have a lot of violence or adult themes. There is a fair amount of fighting and other types of conflict, which some kids might be used to -- but in any case, now you know.

Bottom line, it's a fun film that stands up to repeat viewing, and if the parents approve it for their kids, it's perfect for whole-family movie nights. Hint: get ready to dance when the music rolls over the end credits!

2 out of 5 stars Shark Tale.......2007-05-23

Oscar is a fish who works in a "whale wash", like his Dad did. He wants to be a somebody, but without much money there's not much chance of that. In fact, he's in a bit of debt with the owner of the whale wash, and he ends up being tied up underwater, left to the sharks. When a shark looking to feed on him accidentally is killed by an anchor, Oscar takes the credit as a "shark slayer". Maybe he'll be a somebody then...

"Shark Tale" is pretty smoothly animated, but the plot isn't quite that engaging. Two and a half stars.

5 out of 5 stars WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE.......2007-05-08

NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE

5 out of 5 stars Why are people comparing this to Finding Nemo?.......2007-04-24

This movie is great. It's very funny and gives a good message. Like Dreamworks other movie, 'Madagascar,' it becomes too mature for its target audience, therefore this is not really a film for small children. In fact, adults and teenagers will like this one the most. I think Will Smith is very funny as Oscar - his expressions were priceless!

Now why do people think this is some kind of rip off of Finding Nemo. Lets take a look at the similarities and differences:

Similarities:

*They both had vegetarian sharks.

*They both take place under the ocean.

Differences:

*Finding Nemo is more realistic and takes place on a reef with natural colours. Shark Tale tries a more artistic approach, making it more like a city with shops and apartments. The characters use phones, order pizzas etc.

*There are no humans in ST (apart from an anchor). Whilst with FN, humans were a main part of the story.

*ST is slightly more aimed at older children, teenagers and adults.

*The plots are totally different.

Comparing these two is like comparing apples and oranges. To be honest, I prefer Shark Tale over Finding Nemo. That's just my opinion. I think it is unfair to give Shark Tale a bad review just because it is something it was never intended to be.

In The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, director Wes Anderson takes his familiar stable of actors on a field trip to a fantasy aquarium, complete with stop-motion, candy-striped crabs and rainbow seahorses. And though Anderson does expand his horizons in terms of retro-special effects and a whimsical use of color, fans will otherwise find themselves in well-charted waters. As The Life Aquatic opens, Zissou (Bill Murray), a self-involved, Jacques Cousteau-like filmmaker, has just released a documentary depicting the death of his best friend Esteban, who was eaten by some sort of sea creature--possibly a jaguar shark. Zissou's troubles also include his waning popularity with the public, and a nemesis (Jeff Goldblum) who hogs up all the grant money. Hope arrives in the form of Ned Plimpton (Owen Wilson), an amiable Kentuckian who may be Zissou's son. Despite his lack of enthusiasm for fatherhood, Zissou welcomes Ned--and Ned in turn saves Zissou's new documentary (in which he seeks revenge on the jaguar shark) in more ways than one.

One of Wes Anderson's greatest achievements as a director to date has been launching the autumnal melancholy phase of Bill Murray's career, starting with Rushmore in 1998, and Murray delivers a similarly comedic yet low-key performance here. Unfortunately, Zissou is one of the few characters in this ensemble to achieve multi-dimensionality. Even co-star Wilson doesn't get to develop Ned much beyond Noble Southerner, and he ends up seeming more like a prop for illustrating Zissou's emotional development rather than his own man. The Life Aquatic probably won't be remembered as a great film, but it is still one that no Anderson (or Murray) fan can afford to miss.--Leah Weathersby

Description

Internationally famous oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) and his crew -- Team Zissou -- set sail on a expedition to hunt down the mysterious, elusive -- possibly nonexistent -- Jaguar Shark that killed Zissou's partner during the documentary filming of their latest adventure. They are joined on their voyage by a young airline co-pilot, who may or may not be Zissou's son (Owen Wilson), a beautiful journalist (Cate Blanchett) assigned to write a profile of Zissou, and his estranged wife and co-producer, Eleanor (Anjelica Huston). They face overwhelming complications including pirates, kidnapping, and bankruptcy. Oscar(R)-nominated writer-director (Best Original Screenplay, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, 2001) Wes Anderson has assembled an all-star cast that also includes Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Michael Gambon, Noah Taylor, and Bud Cort in this wildly original adventure-comedy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A sentimental comedy that mixes absurdity with ultra-realism.......2007-06-26

"The Life Aquatic" is a movie that revolves around two main characters, Steve Zissou (Bill Murray), and Ned Plimpton (Owen Wilson). Both of these characters are likable in how off-center they are. Zissou is an aging oceanographer, with all the vices of a sailor. Plimpton is a Southern gentleman and a pilot. These two people set off along with a crew to film and destroy a giant shark.

What gives this movie such a strange feel is the mixture of realism and absurdity. Some scenes are hilarious in how ridiculous they are, while others show how brutal and fragile life can be on the ocean. At times, it can leave the viewer a bit confused on what just happened.

So thinking back on "The Life Aquatic", I can best describe it as a strange sentimental movie. It has alot of elements of humor, mixed with the peculiarities of the main characters, yet weighted with death and violence. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the ocean.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe it was too deep for me.......2007-06-12

If there was humor in this film it was over my head. I found nothing in this film to be even mildly humorous let alone down right funny. I think the joke is on the people who paid money to see it. Someone who says they see the 'genius' in this film is either deluding themselves, lying or a heck of a lot more thoughtful than I am. My advice: Avoid this garbage at all costs.

5 out of 5 stars Comedic genius. Better than Rushmore........2007-06-11

This movie is so funny and surprisingly there is a real story in it as well. This movie has a laugh in spite of itself, while coming off as dryly serious. Bill Murray is a master of this kind of delivery. You have to listen to the entire dialogue of this movie, alot of the jokes are subtle and you may need to use your brain. Yes the fish look stupid, beautifully done but utterly fake looking. Yes Zissou smokes pot like a chimney, but he is utterly confident in his ability to come out on top. Being the ever sarcastic wise cracker Murray is at the top of his game here. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Life Aquatic, Freaky Zissou Styley.......2007-05-12

This is one of my favorite movies and I was glad to finally get it on DVD. The special features are nice for a fan like me, you can see how incredibly creepy Mark Mothersbaugh is and what the actor who plays Esteban had to think, along with lots of great footage of Seu Jorge playing his guitar.

A must have for fans of the movie. I understand this is one of those polarizing movies where people with good taste and a good sense of humor get it and love it, while lots of other people don't get it. If you saw it and got it, then get this; or if you are into strange, odd, dark-ish, and/or interesting comedies, then check this out.

Peace
Blessed Be

1 out of 5 stars Boring!!!.......2007-05-03

I am sorry but I do like Bill Murray and Owen Wilson. But this movie is just plain bad and is very boring. I turned it off after the first hour when the movie was developing into nothing. I don't leave bad reviews like this unless they are very bad, and this one is. Rent something else, anything else besides this one.

With a voracious trio of mako sharks wreaking havoc, Deep Blue Sea dares to up the ante on Jaws, but director Renny Harlin trades the nuanced suspense of Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster for the trickery of the digital age. In other words, why build genuine terror when you can show ill-fated humans getting torn into bloody chunks? The aforementioned makos have been lab rats in an effort to harvest a miracle cure for Alzheimer's disease from the brains of sharks, but the research has an unfortunate side effect: the sharks get smarter, and they're determined to break out of Aquatica, the deep-sea complex where they've been penned.

Model-actress Saffron Burrows plays the researcher; Thomas Jane pulls double-duty as shark expert and action hunk; Samuel L. Jackson's the corporate sponsor who chooses the worst time for an Aquatica tour; and rapper LL Cool J is nicely cast as Aquatica's cook and comic relief. Michael Rapaport, Jacqueline McKenzie, and Stellan Skarsgård round out the cast, most of whom are turned into shark food as the makos turn Aquatica into a floating junkyard. Harlin takes devilish pleasure in providing sudden, unexpected shocks--no small feat in such a derivative thriller--and as a series of action set-pieces, Deep Blue Sea never disappoints. It's inevitable that Burrows should end up in her underwear like Sigourney Weaver in Alien, but even then the movie offers a credible reason for the strip-down; that Deep Blue Sea can be simultaneously ridiculous and sensible is just another one of its shlocky charms. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Avoid!.......2007-05-31

This movie is so unbelivably bad, I have to force myself to even watch it 5 minutes!

The movie is obviously set up for a disaster, you have the building which looks very high tech, but once the sharks get mean there's like no place to hide and no weapon to defend yourself with.
It will collaps if too much pressure on it. Helicopters can't land when it's a storm outside. It's highly explosive. The doors can't keep sharks out.
The whole building just screams "You will die here!", it destroys the feeling of the movie.

And the characters... couldn't they have chosen a worse heroine?
Our "lovely heroine" has the emotions of a psycho-maniac-serial killer, she dosen't care if people die because of her, she dosen't care they die in front of her, she only cares about her stupid experiment.
If I would have been in the movie, I would have pushed her into the water and let the sharks eat her!!
I was so mad when she was portrayed as innocent.
Another character also annoyed me, she sees her husband die in front of her eyes - and she dosen't care!
Only later she shouts "No!" and that's it.

Where is the emotion in this movie?
There's only dialog, talk about god and faith, bad jokes and sharks that are supposed to be super-smart, but instead appear super-dumb.

3 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT JAWS BUT IT'S PRETTY DAMN GOOD!.......2007-04-08

This is one of those movies that you think will really be bad. It turns out is a pretty good little thriller with some sci-fi thrown in. The biggest weakness is that the sharks don't always look that realistic. I am a hugh fan of Jaws and this is not in the same league, but it does deliver the goods.

3 out of 5 stars omg!.......2007-04-05

if your kids like horror flicks they will enjoy it. It's just an updated version of jaws.

3 out of 5 stars nothing new here(hence three stars), but for reasons beyond mt control I like this cheesy hyped up B-movie.......2007-03-29

If you have read any of my reviews before you know that sometimes I can find cheesy movies of any kind fun to watch(Deep Star Six, The Being, and The Green Slime come to mind),so the fact that this silly shark thriller is one i like to watch shouldn't surprise anyone. It tries so hard to scare you and has some very well done action that it most of the time rises above some plot holes and lapses in logic.
In the middle of nowhere(of course) a research lab at sea is looking to find a cure for Alzheimer's and they are using shark's brains to test and get the cure. Problem is (as it always is in these movies) the lead Scientist is doing the mad Doctor thing and messing with nature(but looking stunning doing so) and before you know it, you get a shark with Albert Einstein's brain and the Hulks rage. Can you say "chum and get it"(sorry had to use that pun). Throw in a storm and let the lab start to sink, and you have human tar-tar and lots of action.
Like I said I don't know why, but if you are in the mood this one isn't going to tax the brain, but it is a great way to kill a rainy afternoon.

4 out of 5 stars Fun B-cheese movie..........2007-02-11

I'll be honest about something, I like some movies cause they're good, others cause they are so bad they're good and others I classify in a category I made: "Trash but trash done well."

"Deep Blue Sea" is in the third category, it's a fun ride in spite of the cheesy acting, story and setting.

The story is about an underwater research facility where scientists are trying to find a cure for human brain loss (alzheimers). So they do the only rational thing, they use gene therapy to increase the brain mass of great white sharks to harvest a brain protein.

Of course the obvious side effect is the sharks get smarter and decide to band together to escape the research station and chow down on the humans inside while they attempt to escape.

The cast is fairly good, though again cheesy acting throughout. Thomas Jane (The Punisher), Saffron Burrows (Wing Commander, sorry it's all I could think of), Michael Rappaport (Fox's The War at Home), LL Cool J (A lot of stuff) and Samuel L. Jackson (A Time to Kill, Unbreakble, Pulp Fiction) among others.

The movie itself is pretty standard, but fun. The group of people must try to escape before becoming great white ('cept for Jackson and LL of course) shark food. A couple of good kills happen and the sharks look pretty real up close. Good special effects too and I loved the setting of the lab with the ocean just outside the window, cool look.

The film becomes quickly paced after a while and before you know it it's over, so it doesn't overstay it welcome.

Overall fun stuff, turn the brain off and enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars New Car Dealer.......2007-05-29

This film would have been better if they had stuck to the topic of everyday happenings at a dealership. The stupid inner drama of murder, drugs and gangsters would be better in a Soprano episode. But if you can watch the first 45 minutes and forget the rest, some of the characters especially the sales manager will offer the viewer a funny look what a bad dealer is. Thank goodness this is not the case of today's dealers.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat intesting movie but loses direction midway........2007-05-28

This movie is an interesting but inaccurate take on the user car sales industry. The sales techniques discussed in this movie are sure to shut down any business. However, this movie has some redeeming features in terms of it being truly funny at times. I would say that the first half of this movie is quite good, the latter half which diverges from the car salesman theme is what wrecks the movie. Who needs a mini crime story inside a user car story?

5 out of 5 stars So true!.......2007-05-13

This movie totally tells it like it is in the car business. A little exaggeratted but dead on. I sold cars for a while so I can totally relate. The mind games that the sales and management play with the customers to bulldoze them into the sale. Phrases like "it's only $900/month..." or "you're only looking to pay x amount a month?" trying to make it sound like it's too little of an amount no matter what amount the customer may say. If you're looking to buy a car in the near future I would highly reccomend watching this as a two hour tutorial before shopping. Mind you, not all car salespeople are like this but a decent number of them can be this way... especially used car salespeople!!!

5 out of 5 stars If you sell cars, you will love this movie.......2007-05-12

I work in the car biz, and one of the older guys here recommended this movie. So I searched Amazon for it, and surely enough there it was. This is a hilarious movie. It was just like the place I work. We aren't as mean as they were, but the same hilarity occurs. I'd recommend this to anyone who works in the car biz, and even anyone who's bought a car.

2 out of 5 stars A Low Rent "Glengarry Glen Ross" Devolves Into Standard Action Picture.......2006-11-14

"Suckers" is an interesting, if not very accomplished, picture about the business of selling cars. Loaded with testosterone, this movie starts out as a low rent version of "Glengarry Glen Ross" (minus the great dialogue). We see the ruthlessness and the sleaze of one particular dealership as our cutthroat salesman will do anything to close a deal for maximum profit. Much of the movie is focused on Daniel Benzali as the man in charge. He gives frequent "pep" talks and motivates his staff to be heartless, cunning, and manipulative to outwit prospective buyers. These portions of the film are definitely the most interesting, and Benzali is a forceful--if not particularly likable--presence. Her performs the same function (in much the same way) that the Alec Baldwin character did in the movie version of "Glengarry" by setting up a competitive sales competition.

Based on the dealership aspect alone, this would have been a pretty intriguing film. But "Suckers" also throws in a few more standard B-movie conventions. We've got one salesman being threatened by loansharks, another involved in the drug trade, and a couple of superfluous sex scenes for the sake of nudity. By the time we near the end, the film has lost all interest in the dealership to go out with a big confrontational shoot-out. Very standard, and not very believable.

"Suckers" is harmless enough. Probably geared more for a male audience, I can imagine some people enjoying this picture--although, for me, it's appeal was somewhat limited. KGHarris, 11/06.

Hailed by many critics as one of the best films of 1995, this finely tuned black comedy sparked a renewed interest in movies based on books by prolific crime novelist Elmore Leonard, whose trademark combination of tight plotting and sharp humor is perfectly captured here. After the success of Pulp Fiction, John Travolta continued his meteoric comeback as Chili Palmer, a Mob "mechanic" whose latest assignment takes him to Los Angeles, where his fascination with the movie business turns into a new career as a would-be movie producer. He pitches ideas with a sleazy producer (Gene Hackman) and a major star (Danny DeVito), and also finds time to deal with a vengeful Mobster (Dennis Farina) and assorted Hollywood types (including Renee Russo and Delroy Lindo) who all want their piece of a tempting show-biz pie. The plot unfolds with enticing precision, but it's really Elmore's snappy dialogue--and the performances that bring it to life--that make this one of the best comedies of the 1990s. --Jeff Shannon

    1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2007-01-11

Too bad there were so many great actors in this movie. I watched it because I thought it was a comedy, which it was not. I can't say it was a black comedy either. Great cast, good acting, but the idea of the movie and the end product just doesn't make it. Watching the movie was a waste of time.

This is a great movie, very very funyn, it makes you love and hate Mr Palmer al the way through the movie, too bad the sequel was a carbon copy of it. The dvd is all about the movie, no extra features, but a great price

    4 out of 5 stars Moview Review.......2006-11-04

Hilariously clever plot which glides from gangsters to Hollywood. Dennis Farina is a standout in a perfectly casted film.

4 out of 5 stars Very original comedy.......2006-10-07

This movie was well thought out and is not one of those movies wear an actor uses a catch-phrase that he did in 10 other movies. However, the sequel (Be Cool), basicly re-hashes the same jokes in this movie, with a similar storyline.

5 out of 5 stars The best movie of the 90's.......2005-09-22

Word's can hardly desribe the genius film. It is without a doubt the peak of mystery, romance, action and pure cinematic brilliance!
The fantastic screenplay perfectly shows how equally amazing Elmore Leanord's book is to the movie. It is also, by far, John Travolta's best role ever, and without him the movie would be nothing. This film is perfect for everyone, the alluring plot, amazing acting, entertaining screenplay.
    It is truly, a gem.

The only remaining evidence that Sylvester Stallone might have had a respectable career, this 1976 Oscar ® winner (for Best Picture, Director, and Editing) is still the quintessential ode to an underdog and one of the best boxing movies ever made. After writing the script about a two-bit boxer who gets a "million-to-one shot" against the world heavyweight champion, Stallone insisted that he star in the title role, and his equally unknown status helped to catapult him (and this rousing film) to overnight success. The story is familiar, but it's handled with such vitality and emotional honesty that you can't help but leap and cheer for Rocky Balboa, the chump-turned-champ who stuns the boxing world with the support of his timid girlfriend Adrian (Talia Shire) and grizzled trainer Gus (Burgess Meredith). Oscar nominations went to all the lead actors (including Burt Young as Adrian's hot-tempered brother), but four sequels could never top the universal appeal of this low-budget crowd pleaser. --Jeff Shannon

    2 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray version.......2007-07-03

This rates as my all time worst HD video transfer, I would not be surprised to find that it has been transfered from a VHS version of the movie as it is so bad. There is bucket loads of grain, total lack of definition it is just absolutely terrible.

5 out of 5 stars Rocky Is Still A Knockout!.......2007-06-14

Sylvester Stallone's best work! A movie that was up for awards! Great story, great characters, great acting, great buildup to the end fight, and just an all around great drama movie! A must own for any great movie lover's collection!

    5 out of 5 stars Andrian !.......2007-01-22

This movie was a colt classic when it came out in 1976. It spawned five sequels in, a little over 30 year. A word of warning this movie has some mild language, mild violence and a couple midl disgusting parts like when Rocky drinks the five egg yokes uncooked. Rocky is a young little now boxer who's struggling to make a living. He's fate when he is given a rare chance. This thirty year old 180 pound man gets a chance to go up against the heavy wait champion a 30 year old 225 pound young buff black man Appolo Creed. This movie may not have a ton of actions but it makes up with it's beautiful potrayed characters and thrilling musical score. This is a movie that will inspire the most discouraged of all people. Will rockies training pay off can he do what no fighter has ever been able to do. Find out in the thrilling conclusion to this 1976 classic film.

2 out of 5 stars Going tru the same things.......2007-01-02

Whats the meaning of buying the Blu ray if there are no extras, especially for older movies.
The same old marketing trick is on again. They will first publish plain movies (again) on BD, then they will publish director cuts, then collectors editions, then special editions etc. etc.
I will not buy any BDs just because they are plain BD copies. Consumers should demand more content in BDs.

4 out of 5 stars ROCKY - 1080P glory with none of the extras..........2006-12-09

One of the only films in my top ten list that seems to get better every time I see it. Rocky Balboa is one of the most charming down on his luck loser's the cinema has ever seen. The film sweeps a range of emotions from hope where it was all but gone to chill you to the bone despair. A film of loneliness, surrender and ultimately redemption. Just re-watched the scene where Mickey comes to ask Rocky if he can manage him. The fear in the sub-text and in Rocky's eyes is so tragic and beautiful. I still get caught up in it after dozens of viewings. Just amazing.

    Blu-ray details

The picture quality is stellar, grainy and wonderful. There are some inconsistencies in the shadows during the fight and of course a large color shift when they cut to stock footage of the audience, but most if not all of these artifacts are probably from the original release. The sound is tinny here and there and over modulates once in a while, again I think this probably due to the original sound track being 30 years old but it is distracting on occasion.

The biggest disappointment is the lack of extras. MGM simultaneously released a collector's edition 2 disc DVD of ROCKY with commentary from Stallone and hours of behind the scenes and documentaries on the film. Unfortunately none of these are on the Blu-ray edition. The only extra is the original theatrical trailer. Quite a disappointment and although the picture is great, I would have opted for the DVD if I knew ahead of time. A 30 year old film is technically sub-par to what we see today and seeing it on a DVD vs. a Blu-ray Disc is probably not a hugely dramatic difference. I suggest saving a few bucks and getting a lot more with the 2 Disc DVD.
