The Lady and the Highwayman, produced by Lew Grade as part of a series of Barbara Cartland dramatizations in 1987, contains all the ingredients that made her unique style of romantic fiction so successful. The highwayman in question, known as Silver Blade, is actually an aristocratic outlaw played by a youthful Hugh Grant in a bouffant mullet wig. The lady is Panthea (Lysette Anthony), delicate but firm of purpose, who knows her man when she sees him. It's Restoration England, so the frocks are fabulous. But Cartland's pretensions to historical accuracy evaporate when she makes Charles II's mistress, Barbara Castlemaine (Dynasty's Emma Samms), the villainess of the piece.
From there, it's a freewheeling ride of Robin Hood-inspired philanthropy, duplicitous cousins, and some uncomfortably fetishistic shots of the rituals and instruments of execution, although everybody is rescued in time for the romantic soft-focus finale. Full of splendidly self-indulgent performances from the likes of Claire Bloom, John Mills, and Michael York, The Lady and the Highwayman is a feast of thespian ham. Somehow, the cast triumph over the banality of the basic material. --Piers Ford
Customer Reviews:
The Lady and the Highwayman.......2007-05-07
Story line was fair but the color was terrible and fuzzy. Wasn't worth watching or the price no matter how low the cost was.
Great Movie For The History Buffs.......2007-03-09
This is a great movie for the history buffs. It is a movie about court intrigue, plots, jealous courtiers, envy and about love in the court of King Louis IV of France. Hugh Grant plays a Robin Hood of the 18th century and the ever beautiful Emma Samms plays the King's mistress Louise de Valleire.
As seen on TV........2007-01-12
I bought this DVD b/c i had seen it on t.v before and just love old-fashioned romances esp.starring Hugh Grant. However, i didn't think the quality of pixels were that clear. Overall, still a good movie.
good Barbara Cartland adaptation.......2006-06-12
Filmed for British cable in the early 90's, this was one in a series of four movies based on the romantic period novels of Dame Barbara Cartland. Set during the reign of King Charles II, THE LADY AND THE HIGHWAYMAN is the tale of a love affair between notorious criminal Silver Blade (Hugh Grant) and Lady Panthea Vyne (Lysette Anthony). When the king's jealous mistress Barbara Castlemaine (Emma Samms) discovers the romance, she decides to send them both to the gallows. Swashbuckling adventure and breathless romance abound in this enjoyable tale. The cast also includes Oliver Reed, Gordon Jackson, Sir John Mills, Claire Bloom, Christopher Cazenove and Michael York.
"Keep your eyes to the front you lecherous little dwarf!".......2004-11-09
This wonderful '80's cheesfest features Emma Samms, Lysette Anthony, and Hugh Grant, speaking in a very weird, strangled manner that is apparently meant to be sexy.
Based on a novel by the immortal Barbara Cartland, the story follows the insipid adventures of the equally insipid Panthea Vine, orphaned heiress and milk sop extraordinaire. We watch as she endures a VERY quick marriage to an evil tax collector (about half hour before he is fortuitously disposed of), meets the hunky, Robin Hood-esque Silver Blade ("Thank you, thank you, Silver Blade!"), prances around the court of King Charles II, makes a powerful enemy (Samms, paying the rent), solves a family mystery and finally winds up fending for her life while being tried for treason.
It's all very silly, and highly entertaining if you're in the proper frame of mind. Other reviewers mention the hammy acting and ridiculous dialogue, but for me that's part of the fun. Rent it if you like costume romances, enjoy laughing at bad movies, or want to feel superior to the bunch of hapless Hollywood stars forced to say things like "My lord Chancellor is like all you men, simply a big belly surrounded by self-esteem!"
If you do see it, watch for the moment when Silver Blade challenges Panthea's husband to a duel. "But he's one of best swordsmen in England!" she cries. "I know that," he replies after a decidedly uncomfortable pause. Priceless.

NATURAL BORN KILLERS relives again.......2005-08-06
Okay what is it with Jason Priestley and flop movies? Coming out of Bevely Hill's you would think he is destine to be a star and now he does movies like this 'sigh'. I just seen this movie the other day and what a waste of my precious time. I feel like i been rip off and then some. The plot is like N.B.K but the direction is lost and the script is just plan ho hum...nothing to keep you interested at all. At least it didn't keep me interested and i really wanted to like it since i am a big fan of his....go Brandon aka Jason!!!!
Watch it if you don't mind watching bad movies.....its so bad is not even good.
umm Jason Priestley was good in it!.......2003-08-22
This movie has alot of action in it and a good story, kinda easy to follow, but it was just missing talent from other actors. See this if you're a big Jason fan, otherwise, skip it.

Product Description
Romance and adventure intersect in this wonderful period film featuring Hugh Grant in one of his earliest appearances. Ably supported by an all star British cast,... Oliver Reed, Robert Morley, Michael York. The tale of a dashing swordsman who, in the 17th century, must rescue a beautiful lady from a jealous rival and former mistress of King Charles II.
Customer Reviews:
Amusing ... perhaps unintentionally so........2006-04-17
I imagine that if any of the huge-name actors in this movie (such as Hugh Grant or Michael York) were ever on a talk show on which the host showed a clip of this movie, they would most likely be quite embarrassed. Other reviewers have noted the accuracy of the period costumes, and this may be so, but it is nonetheless a romance of the cheesiest calibre. It smacks of hackneyed melodrama, silly dialogue ("I should shoot you where you stand, but that is not my way."), and hokey lighting during the "romantic" bits. It was, I believe, a made-for-TV movie, though, so this is perhaps to be expected.
All the same, if you are a fan of the actors who are in it -- especially Hugh Grant, and would like to see him in one of his early works, or if you are like me and are (unintentionally?) amused by cheesy romances, then you will certainly enjoy this. =)
A good film that I enjoyed watching! .......2005-07-18
It isn't the quality of Pirates of the Carribean or Lord of the Rings, but it has a nice oldtime feel to it that I love. Hugh Grant is young and vibrant in this film of his earlier years. The characters are all fairly well portayed. It has some good fight scenes as well, again, not as good as nowaday fight scenes, but still captivating. The costumes/makeup are wonderful to look at, as well as the variety of scenery. It has just the right amount of romance, action and drama. And good suspene! I give it 4 out of 5 stars simply because I think it could be better quality, but overall, its a good movie to watch over and over again for years to come.

Priceless.
