The first gymnast to ever score a perfect 10 at the Olympics was Nadia Comaneci. From a small town in Romania, Nadia (Leslie Weiner, in her only feature film role) rose to international stardom. Under the coaching guidance of Bela Karoli, she pushed herself with the will of a champion. This movie does a wonderful job of showing how hard gymnasts must work as well as showing how much they must give up in their personal lives in order to achieve success. After winning three gold medals at the 1976 Olympics, her life spins out of control when Bela is removed as her coach. For the first time in her life she is on her own, she is the object of jealousy from her teammates, and her weight is out of control. She seeks out her former coach and asks for his help. Together they put Nadia back on the winning track. A family film with a lot to offer, Nadia shows in a credible way the highs and lows of celebrity. The gymnastics portions are terrific. A must if there's a budding gymnast or gymnastic enthusiast in your home. Made in 1984 for television. (Ages 5 to adult) --Peggy Maltby-Etra

Description

Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci is profiled in this heart-warming family film. Nadia began training competitively at the age of six, with the now world-famous coach, Bela Karolyi and his wife Marta. At fourteen, she became the first Olympic gymnast to score a perfect 10 and walked away with five gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze at the 1976 Olympics. The petite gymnast from Romania was now an overnight media sensation, inspiring a whole new generation of future Nadias. But, fame came with a high price. As Nadia grew into a young woman she struggled with isolation, weight gain that threatened her career and the fear of exceeding increasingly high standards.

Nadia captures the hard work and determination of a young girl driven to success. The film stars Oscar® nominee Carrie Snodgrass (Diary of A Mad Housewife), Talia Balsam (Without A Trace), two-time Emmy® nominee Conchata Ferrell and Johann Carlo (Quiz Show).

5 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.......2007-06-27

I love this movie. I have been waiting forever for it to come out on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Probably my all time favorite movie as a kid!.......2007-06-03

When I was about 8 my mom recorded this off TV, and I used to watch it every day, I had all of it memorized, including the commercials. I started taking gymnsatics after seeing this, and Nadia and Teodora were my idols. They did a pretty good job of getting alot of details.

5 out of 5 stars We loved Nadia!.......2006-08-02

My daughters have grown up watching this video, sometimes every day! Grandma said that if she never had to watch it again it would be fine with her...guess we overdid it. When I hear the music of the competitions I stop what I'm doing to watch that part again. Truly a classic and family favorite.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Movie!.......2005-12-31

I had this tape on VHS a long time ago and lent it to someone who did not return it. I want to purchase it again and wanted to buy one of the used ones - can't believe that someone would have the nerve to try and sell a VHS tape for $199.00 though - is the case solid gold or something??? - shame on you!!

I wish that someone would make a new movie about Nadia's life up to this point - this movie ends with the ('79?) world championships in Texas - her life is so much more exciting after that- with the Karolyis defecting shortly thereafter, her life in Romania under the Ciauczescu regime and her eventual defection to Canada and marriage to Bart Connor.

5 out of 5 stars A must see !! Nadia is Great !!.......2005-04-17

Nadia has been my favorite movie (and her my idol) since the 1st time I saw it at the age of 6. In reference to the other comment about the movie being edited, it's not. I have the original tv broadcast on tape that I recorded, and a copy I bought here on Amazon.com. They are both the same. The VHS version does have Nadia and Teodora doing their friendship routine when they first meet. This movie is an inspiration to anybody, even if they're not in gymnastics. My favorite part of the movie is that they actually show Nadia's uneven bar routine from the Montreal Olympics (in slow motion)so you can see just how perfect it was! This movie is a must have. I just wish it was on DVD. My tape is really getting worn out.

Description

This is a full color, beautifully filmed, adventure in which you can share in the excitement of a family's sailing voyage around the world.

Bob, Sandra, sons Stephen and Dwayne, and daughter Susan departed San Diego, Ca. on their sailing ketch Sea Witch stopping first in Hawaii. Their itinerary included the islands of the South Pacific, on to Australia, thence through to Torres Straits to Bali and then onward across the Indian Ocean to Africa. They voyaged on across the South Atlantic stopping at St Helena and islands off the coast of Brazil before sailing on through the Caribbean, Panama Canal, and finally back to San Diego.

The film depicts robust blue water sailing, secluded anchorages, and interesting native cultures. Scenes present a cultural montage ranging from a cargo-cult tribe encountered in the New Hebrides, a surf carnival in Australia, to a Hindu Cremation Ceremony in Bali, Indonesia.

5 out of 5 stars Sailing Documentary.......2007-01-17

This is a delightful documentary about a sailing trip around the world which I thought was very enjoyable to watch. I have attended several presentations of sailing trips and watched a couple of VHS/DVD which were about sailing trips of lesser magnitude. This one, in my opinion, is the best I have seen. There are excellent sailing scenes and interesting destinations presented. The music, some of which was original, was nicely done.
Watching Blue Water Odyssey was a nice diversion on a cold winter evening.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SAILING CIRCUMNAVIGATION DVD.......2007-01-16

I found this DVD an excellent DVD of a family's sailing voyage around the world. The picture quality was good and the narration/music well done. Some of the sailing shots were outstanding and the places visited quite interesting.
If you are looking for a "how to" movie this is not for you, in my opinion there are quite enough of those, however, if you a looking for a "doing it" movie this is the one for you.
I would guess this circumnavigation was accomplished in the 1980-1990 time frame but the ocean doesn't change and the excitement of such a trip remains. What a marvelous family adventure this must have been.

1 out of 5 stars Blue Water Odyssey.......2007-01-16

I suppose my expectations were to get an insight into planning and executing a round the world trip.

I got a home movie that was very nice as a home movie- a little dated circ 1980's

It does show some interesting shots of how it was to sail this Pacific Islands, Australia and Bali

As you can image it was not what I expected and I would suggest that unless you are interested in watching someone else's home movies your should avoid this CD

5 out of 5 stars Sail cruising documentary.......2007-01-14

This is a very entertaining documentary about a family's sailing circumnavigation accomplished on a remarkably beautiful sail boat. It contains some very good sailing scenes and provides an interesting insight into what it is like to have such a "once in a lifetime" adventure.
I was pleased to find it a well filmed presentation with pleasant music and narration which carried the viewer away on a very memorable journey. What a wonderful experience this family has had. I am very envious.
This really is a remarkable DVD that is well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars A simple homemade documentary........2007-01-11

This is not a stylish production by any means but rather a simple homemade documentary that is enjoyable to watch. It is the sailboat cruising journey of a family who shows you the interesting and exotic places they traveled to. If you love sailing and would like to see a bit of what it's like to go on an extented journey to foriegn ports, then this is an good little film. The film quality isn't that great by today's standards because it was filmed with a home video camera from the late 70's by the look of it. Anyway, there's not many such documentaries so at least this is one that is around to enjoy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars HERSHEY DOMINATES.......2007-02-16

Based on a true story and a book called EVIDENCE OF LOVE, this tv movie is made remarkable by the Emmy-winning performance of Barbara Hershey. She is utterly magnificent in the role of a middle class housewife who brutally murders her ex-lover's wife in a self defensive rage. Hershey superbly captures the many nuances of this seemingly normal woman who commits a heinous deed. Her hypnosis sequence is brutally painful and she pulls out no stops in showing us the hidden rage.
Brian Dennehy is equally good as the lawyer who tries to get her out of her terrifying predicament.
The movie is impressively done and once again worthy most of all for Ms. Hershey's dynamic presence.

5 out of 5 stars DVD Killing in a Small Town.......2007-01-22

5 out of 5 stars DVD: A Killing in a Small Town (The True Stories Collection).......2006-11-22

The movie grabbed my attention within first ten minutes and continued to be interesting throughout. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys watching true crime type flicks or murder mysteries. It is also interesting from the standpoint of someone who studies personality disorders.

4 out of 5 stars Sharp & Cutting.......2005-08-14

Good film portrayal of the story of axe murderess Candy Morrison and her neighbor. Rivalry, cruelty and jealousy flare up between these small town women that ends with the brutal strokes of an axe.

5 out of 5 stars We love it! .......2007-01-09

We gave this to our son for Christmas and he absolutely loves it!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed Mom.......2006-01-20

My son LOVES airplanes and jets! I bought this DVD based on the rave reviews of people with young children loving this video. If you want a DVD that shows airplanes/jets flying, DO NOT BUY THIS DVD! The name of the video should be, "Watch the Blue Angles Get Ready to Fly," because that is what this video is. In the first 20 minutes there are short scenes of the jets flying. Then the next 25 minutes is NO FLYING just talking and showing the Blue Angles getting ready for their show. In the last 8 minutes you get to see part of an air show. My son has never made it to that point. He wants to see airplanes/jets fly and I'm now on a new search for a DVD that will do this for him.

4 out of 5 stars Blue Angels, In pursuit of excellence.......2005-09-07

My 3 year old boy loves this DVD. He would watch it over and over and now claims that he wants to be a pilot. I think that this DVD goes over detail that I thought wouldn't impress a 3 year old but he often repeats their simulations & commands. I think it's a great DVD and I got one for my 2 year old God-son who is in love with it as well. The only possible bad point is that my kid & God-son want to keep watching it over and over. As a parent one might not be too happy w/ their kids watching too much of one thing or too much TV period.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre at Best..........2005-06-18

I guess I should have realized by some of the other reviews that this DVD would be geared toward a younger audience (and by younger I mean 10 or under), but I thought I would be getting more footage of aerial maneuveurs than this DVD provided. The cinematography is on par with that of a slightly above-average TV show documentary.

"Documentary" would be an an accurate word to describe this DVD - it is much more about the preparation and work it takes to put on a Blue Angels air show than it is about the Blue Angels aerial acrobatics. So if you're like me and looking an expertly filmed documentary of what a Blue Angels air show looks like, look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Entertainment & Excitement.......2005-06-15

My son (almost 4) is crazy about airplanes so I purchased this DVD based on the other reviews already written for this DVD. I thought it could possibly be a little above what he could conceptually understand as it was a more "behind the scenes" type show and didn't have a lot of actual display flying in it but I was wrong. My son has been glued to this DVD every evening for a week!

To be honest, I didn't know a lot about the Blue Angels myself but the first time I watched the DVD, I have to admit that even I was glued to it. The DVD tells you a lot of interesting facts about the Blue Angels that I don't normally think you would know just by going to see them at an airshow. For e.g. what certain hand signals mean, what jobs the ground crew have etc. I thought the video quality was excellent and the behind the scenes information wonderfully informative.

The only disappointment I felt was that there was not enough video footage shown of the Blue Angels flying taken at an actual airshow. There is only about 10 minutes flying at the end of the video and a little display half way through the video when one of the Blue Angels is taking a member of the press up for a quick flight.

Otherwise, I think this would be a great video for any kids who are interested in flight or anyone who wants to know more about the Blue Angels.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent inspiring horse movie!.......2007-01-11

This movie is excellently done. Allowing one to learn a lot about Irish culture and see a lot of on location scenery. The plot is very heart-warming. While it is true that the "based on a true story" element is not much of the story line, since not much is known about what happenned to the real Shergar, it is a charming conjecture.
It is a delightful film that's excellent for family viewing.

1 out of 5 stars The movie Shergar ought to come with a warning........2006-02-26

As a devoted movie-lover and horse-owner, I must say I regret watching this movie. The only good that came from watching it is at least now I know who Shergar was.

The failure of this film rests entirely in its plot, which is pure fantasy (or nightmare) and utterly unrealistic. The ending is so atrocious it destroyed the little bit of pleasure that I experienced watching beautiful horses and scenery.

Before I purchased the movie (on sale), I read the description of the plot thinking it might be similar to "Flash." "Flash" is a very well made fictional Disney movie about a boy who steals back his horse from an abusive owner and rides it from Georgia to New Jersey to save its life and be reunited with his merchant-marine father.

Instead, the movie "Shergar" should come with a warning. It is far more similar to "Phar Lap," a well-produced drama which condenses the life of Australia's most famous flat-track Thoroughbred and ends with Phar Lap's sudden and mysterious death.

Like many pleasure-horse owners, I'm not an expert on the history--even the recent history--of international equine celebrities. But even if I had known that Shergar was most likely killed by his abductors, the horribly patched-up ending of the movie made me nearly physically ill with grief and shock.

I will probably keep the movie just as a part of my horse film collection, but I will never watch it again. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, but in this case the truth (still a mystery) is MUCH preferred to this piece of fiction, "based on a true story."

If you love horse movies, purchase a nice new DVD of Coppola's Classic, "The Black Stallion," or Disney's "Flash." You'll get all the beauty, suspense, and thrills without a sickening ending.

2 out of 5 stars Again, for the horse.......2006-01-17

Who wrote this thing? Who directed it? Who could make Ian Holm almost less than good? Who scored it? The insensitive inappropriate music that swallowed up and spat out our emotions was criminal. What happened to Mickey Rourke's face? That was also criminal. Some plastic surgeon somewhere made him look like Frankenstein's monster...all he left out were the neck bolts. Why was O'Rourke in it in the first place? He played a small, wooden, and rather pointless part...then they killed him, rather ingloriously. As for the story woven around the very sad truth of Shergar's kidnapping for ransom by the throroughly inglorious IRA (so O'Rourke's death was at least right in one way), it wasn't bad, it had a certain charm. The boy playing the actual hero here tried his best with the character as written. But a real boy would have gone straight to the cops and the real Shergar would have been home in an hour. For his good deed, the boy would have been a national hero and no one would be throwing him back in gaol. Bad plot point, very bad. But as he didn't, but instead kept running that wonderful horse around the Irish countryside (some beautiful scenery) we got to meet a hippie-tinker and his charming daughter...who is this minute, I hope, enjoying a solid career in the Irish theater. As for running the horse off a cliff (ala Thelma and Louise), the least the writer could do was allow the boy to die with the horse. After all, it was his decision to kill him in such a way and his responsibility to do to himself what he'd done to the horse. But no, he comes alive again and we are all supposed to be happy, happy, even adding a weanling Shergar foal to make us even happy happier. Horsewallop. I was totally cheesed off. Kill the real horse, save the made-up boy, and we all leave the movie satisfied? Not bloody likely.

I thought about the real kidnapping after the movie was over (poor thing that it was), and decided though the IRA might well have been stupid enough to kidnap a great horse, an Irish national hero, for which no one was going to pay them money so they might buy bombs and more arms, they would not be stupid enough to kill him when their ill-conceived plan failed. He was still worth money. And a lot of it. In my opinion, they sold him to the Japanese or the Arabs or the Auzzies for good coin of whichever realm. If they had killed him, they would have wanted us to know...but no proof was ever forthcoming. They'd want us to know in order to show the kind of men they were: dedicated to their cause, serious, not to be taken lightly, and vengeful. Of course, if they killed the horse most people would see them as stupid, cruel, insensitive, and chained to a cause that means nothing in the end but one stupid bloody act after another. If Shergar wound up in a foreign country, two things would happen. One, the rich owner would know it was Shergar, even if he couldn't say so...just as buyers of stolen artwork live with no one knowing. Two, he could breed him, and though the results couldn't be openly named Shergar's progeny, some of them were bound to inherit Daddy's brilliance, and _they_ could be named, and go to become valuable themselves. I know someone in the _know_ claimed they killed him right after the kidnapping because he was so difficult to handle. But they would say that, wouldn't they...to cover the secret deal they made with someone somewhere.

That's what I'd like to believe anyway...and it certainly could have happened that way. My reality allows Shergar a long life somewhere warm, where he covered a lot of good mares, and is only now getting ready to die of a contented old age.

If nothing else, the movie made me think. Hence the two stars. One really.

4 out of 5 stars What really happened to Shergar?.......2005-12-17

More than twenty years after the disappearance of the real-life great race horse, Shergar, the mystery continues as to what really happened to him. [Those involved, years later, said he was so high-strung they shot him just hours or a day or two after he was stolen because they couldn't handle him. Since Shergar was owned by the Aga Khan, worth about $4-5 billion at the time, ransom was immediately ruled out.] With this in mind, this movie should be watched, not as a docudrama but as fiction, with only the horse's name and kidnapping being factual.

Both my wife and I were fully captivated by the story until the unexpected ending. As with most movies, there are a few "holes" in the story, but not enough to detract from the adventure and suspense. We enjoyed the movie (and we own more than a thousand DVD movies related to kids and teens). Because we could not stop rooting for the boy to save the horse, I rate it an above average, but not a classic, horse movie.

[Parents might wish to discuss with their kids what the boy should have done with the hores instead of what he actually did.]

4 out of 5 stars Interesting take on a true event.......2005-01-05

Offering an imaginative if unrealistic solution to the mystery of an actual Irish racehorse who was stolen by the IRA in 1993, the stallion Shergar (played by Rocky) winds up in the hands of an orphaned boy (Tom Walsh). That's only the beginning of this dramatized wish-fulfillment notion of what could have happened.

5 out of 5 stars Admirably well made thriller!.......2005-05-20

Even the picture was made without the support of a glorious and sumptuous photography, emerges as a powerful story whose intensity and twists of fate gets maintain the spectator's interest. A hand hanging in a toy's boat in the middle of a lagoon in Central Park, unavoidable it reminds to Blue Velvet, will be the sparkling point that it will lead to a very interesting puzzle of dark interests, sinister sexual tastes, corruption web and hidden dots beneath the apparent state of things. A psychological mirror arrangement in which the solution will be to play with the weapons of your enemy. Sometimes in this quotidian underground logic you must fight "with" and not "against" a very covered and smart enemy who plays and bets hard that handles carefully the necessary balance between corruption, double moral and ineludible prestige to exert pressure in certain power's spheres that keeps to making up the reality and so, survive.

Tom Berenger makes an impressive role when he hast to face this complicated case that will be growing in intensity and complexity. There will be too much interweaved information and the clues will be given through intelligent dialogues and smart clues. Your memory and observation sense will be tested in a film that deserves your attention.

A Neo Film Noir that reaches its aim.

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous!.......2003-11-19

Didn't like it; unbelievably a waste of time and talent.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Film Noir.......2003-05-18

Tom Berenger is excellent in the lead role as a world-weary cop who makes the mistake of looking for love and trust in the wrong places.

In the best noir tradition, the two female leads (Lori Heuring and Pamela Gidley) are gorgeous; the music is moody and the story is full of twists and turns.

Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Perfectly adequate mystery film........2002-12-26

I confess, I came into this film with somewhat lowered expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a perfectly adequate, competently made mystery movie.

The details of the somewhat intricate plot I will not delve into too much here. It involves Asian gangs, S & M, a mystery body part found floating in the river, and a world-weary cop that has been there and done that. The twists and turns in the plot make it a gripping movie to watch, even though it does lag at times.

Tom Berenger is quite good as a worn-out middle aged cop who drinks and smokes too much and who seems fed up with the travails of his job. He doesn't seem like a fool, but he does find himself involved in something more complex than what it appears to be on the surface. We feel sympathy for him, and we want him to come out ahead. His heart (though not always his common sense) is mostly in the right place.

The main female lead, played by Lori Heuring, didn't seem that convincing to me. She seemed too self-conscious and too "aware of her beauty", which to me is a major flaw. However, she's adequate enough in her performance and lovely to look at.

The "look" of this film is moody and film noir, which sometimes manifests itself in a somewhat dreary grey overcast appearance to the movie. Sometimes the actors are not placed in flattering lighting situations either. But, to be honest, they all look fine no matter how abysmal the lighting is.

The plot is, as I mentioned before, full of twists and turns. I really enjoyed this. I enjoyed not knowing quite what to expect next, and I enjoyed not being able to predict the next plot twist. (I weary of seeing the same hackneyed plot device trotted out again and again in these kind of mysteries.) Not to say that everything in this movie was unexpected and unique -- it wasn't. It had its flaws, to be sure. But in the end, the script held plenty of surprises and I found it to be satisfactorily interesting.

I recommend this film, as long as it's understood that while this film is far from flawless, it's interesting enough. A solid offering.

3 out of 5 stars Better than average TV thriller.......2002-05-28

The plot is familiar as is the case for most of these detective movies that don't make it to theatres. But this movie has some interesting twists and the pace is good. Tom Berenger, as always, turns in a credible performance as the typical cop on the edge (who few people care to work with) and the rest of the cast are quite good. The are many worse ways to spend an hour and half.

Good film portrayal of the story of axe murderess Candy Morrison and her neighbor. Rivalry, cruelty and jealousy flare up between these small town women that ends with the brutal strokes of an axe.
