As the evil Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, Forest Whitaker gives an unforgettable performance in The Last King of Scotland. Powerfully illustrating the terrible truth that absolute power corrupts absolutely, this fictionalized chronicle of Amin's rise and fall is based on the acclaimed novel by Giles Foden, in which Amin's despotic reign of terror is viewed through the eyes of Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy), a Scottish doctor who arrives in Uganda in the early 1970s to serve as Amin's personal physician. His outsider's perspective causes him to be initially impressed by Amin's calculated rise to power, but as the story progresses--and as Whitaker's award-worthy performance grows increasingly monstrous--The Last King of Scotland turns into a pointed examination of how independent Uganda (a British colony until 1962) became a breeding ground for Amin's genocidal tyranny. As Whitaker plays him, Amin is both seductive and horribly destructive--sometimes in the same breath--and McAvoy effectively conveys the tragic cost of his character's naiveté, which grows increasingly prone to exploitation. As directed by Kevin Macdonald (who made the riveting semi-documentary Into the Void), this potent cautionary tale my prompt some viewers to check out Barbet Schroeder's equally revealing documentary General Idi Amin Dada, an essential source for much of this film's authentic detail. --Jeff Shannon

Description

As Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, Forest Whitaker gives "one of the greatest performances of modern movie history" (Wall Street Journal), one that the Associated Press calls "nothing short of Oscar(r) worthy." This is Amin's incredible story as seen through the eyes of Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy), a young Scotsman who becomes the volatile leader's personal physician, due in part to Amin's unexpected passion for Scottish culture -- Amin even proclaims himself "The Last King of Scotland". Seduced by Amin's charisma and blinded by decadence, Garrigan's dream life becomes a waking nightmare of betrayal and madness from which there is no escape. Inspired by real people and events, this gripping, suspenseful stunner is filled with performances you will never forget.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie........2007-07-03

This movie is very moving. To think that stuff like that actually is still happening all over the world is crazy. Worth watching for sure. Forest Whitaker was excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Even as fiction, very scary..........2007-07-03

This is said to be fiction, but the subject of that fiction is as frightening as anything you may ever see. Idi Amin certainly had charm, charisma, and all the things I've learned to avoid in people as I've gotten older. It's never what it seems... James McAvoy is really the lead, and it's his observations that create the center of this fine film. Forrest Whitaker justifiably won many awards for his powerful, insightful portrayal, though he really wasn't the lead character. Known for generally sweet-natured performances, Mr. Whitaker has a repertoire that is most respected. This display of total control and command of the character is frightening and complete, a tour de force. Anyone remember his magnificent performance as Charlie Parker in Eastwood's "Bird"? Though he wasn't the main character, this man created memorable moments (not unlike other Oscar winners with limited screen time, like Anthony Hopkins in "Lambs" or Geoffrey Rush in "Shine"). James McAvoy was given a bad rap by many, but I thought he was terrific. Kerry Washington, too was excellent, and te direction & editing were to the utmost power of the simple story being told.DVD extras are insightful, and Mr. Whitaker's humble approach to the frighteningly powerful role is well examined. The atrocities committed by Idi Amin are only history now, and the idea that such people still exist cannot be ignored. Even as fiction, this depiction of a power hungry maniac can't be discounted by a caring world public.

4 out of 5 stars More relevant than ever!.......2007-07-01

The Last King of Scotland sheds light on one of the most well known African dictators, General Idi Amin Dada of Uganda, who ruled from 1971 to 1979.
A Scot doctor arrives in Africa upon graduating from University in order to distance himself from his overprotective family as well as get a feel of adventure. In Uganda he witnesses the military coup d'etat that brings Idi Amin to power. Upon stumbling across the new leader by chance he renders his medical services and before he knows it he becomes the Ugandan leader's personal physician. His problems, however, have just started...
James McAvoy, Forest Whitaker, Gillian Anderson (who looks great after losing weight and going blonde), and the rest of the cast carry out their respective roles very well.
More relevant than ever, the movie does a great job as an eye-opener to one of the most brutal leaders the Dark Continent has seen in the twentieth century. The film provides the necessary background as well as an accurate description of political and social conditions therein. British involvement is briefly touched upon, but nevertheless provides for some important insight.
Moreover, it could have been and it should have been much more graphic in showing what really took place in Uganda's "killing fields."
Hopefully more will be done to stop the ongoing genocide in the Darfur region of Western Sudan and we will not have to wait for another movie to come out after it's all over before people become aware and do that which is humane.
Similarly to movies like The Lord of War, Hotel Rwanda, and Blood Diamond to name a few, The Last King of Scotland draws attention to some very important issues facing Africa.

Viewing The Last King of Scotland's Special Features section is a lot like stopping off for dessert at a fast-food restaurant after dining on a sumptuous five-course meal. In striking comparison to the feature film's nail-biting tension and riveting drama is "Seven Deleted Scenes," a special feature that is about as exciting as a bowl of boiled rice, and a nonessential theatrical trailer that should be fast forwarded. On the positive side, "Casting Session--The Last King of Scotland" is worth viewing if a behind-the-scenes peek at pre-production casting dilemmas is of interest. Fans of Forest Whitaker (and who isn't?) will appreciate the "Forest Whitaker: Idi Amin Featurette," which highlights the artistic challenges presented by Whitaker's demanding leading role. In it, the actor discusses the methodology behind his brilliant, Oscar-winning performance.

"Capturing Idi Amin" is a first-rate source of information for viewers desiring a crash course on Amin's life and Ugandan politics. The mini-documentary features insightful interviews with key people in Amin's life, interspersed with authentic film footage of Amin. Viewers can compare and contrast this nonfiction depiction of events and supporting characters with Director Kevin MacDonald's cinematic interpretation of Giles Foden's fictional thriller, on which The Last King of Scotland's screenplay is based. Foden's altered reality is mesmerizing, but reality is darned interesting too.

4 out of 5 stars Part Historical Biography With Some Fiction Added In............2007-06-27

Forest Whitaker gives the best performance ever! I thought he did a great job of bringing the violent, former Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin to life on the silver screen.

Throughout the movie, I thought the character of Dr. Nicholas Garrigan was completely naive and bogus, but a REAL PERSON..... so, I kept wondering how could someone of his stature and educational level be so naive about Idi Amin's violent character for so long when he had such close personal contact with him?

Then at the end of the movie when I was watching the special features I discovered that Dr. Nicholas Garrigan wasn't even a part of Idi Amin's inner circle and that he was a fictionalized character! No wonder Dr. Nicholas Garrigan felt completely off the entire movie, he didn't exist in real life!

Had the unbelievable character of Dr. Nicholas Garrigan not been in the movie I would have given this movie a higher rating.

This adaptation of Marion Zimmer Bradley's sprawling and perennially popular book, whose retelling of the Arthurian legends focused on the role of powerful females, compresses a wealth of mysticism, family intrigue, and bloody swordplay into three hours. While the plot can meander slowly and can sometimes seem, well, mystifying, the work of three notable actresses holds the production together, and the numerous complications do eventually get resolved. As Viviane, the Lady of the Lake, Anjelica Huston endeavors to perpetuate the old religion as pagan Britain comes into contact with Christianity. The scheming Morgause, played to evil perfection by Joan Allen, conspires to her own ends. And Avalon priestess Morgaine, played by Julianna Margulies, travels the heroine's journey, overcoming tragedies, injustice, and all manner of obstacles in her duty to both "the goddess" and her younger brother, King Arthur. Although the action lags at times, the production is quite lavish for a made-for-television feature and the film is ultimately entertaining. --Robert J. McNamara

Starring Julianna Margulies, Anjelica Huston, Joan Allen, Caroline Goodall, Edward Atterton, and Samantha Mathis.

5 out of 5 stars mists of avalon.......2007-07-02

the movie is somewhat off from the book, but i still love it!! i have always enjoyed the myths and legends about king arthur (even though it always goes back to lacalot and genivere). this is actually one of the better book/movies that i have seen/read about king arthur-and it takes a while to read the book-trust me, i actually have not made it all the way through the book yet.

2 out of 5 stars Flawed pearl.......2007-06-07

It has good actors, yet it doesn't satisfy.
Maybe it is because it was made for TV and not even pay cable. The characters do not match the book.
Morgause, for instance, in the book starts off as a teenager, and is married young to Lot of Orkney. In the book she is played by an actress in her thirties. This kills a lot of her motivations.
Dissapointing.

2 out of 5 stars Bland on every level.......2007-06-07

I read the book almost twenty years ago, but barely remember it. I realize this movie was made for TV, but it is so empty. It looks good enough, but it has no soul. Maybe the novel's length confounded the script, which stifled some usually good actors. Made for TV doesn't have to be this bland.

4 out of 5 stars Mysts of Avalon.......2007-05-28

This movie is a definite MUST add to the Excaliber, Merlin,Etc fans dvd collections.

5 out of 5 stars By the Book!!!.......2007-05-28

As a HUGE fan of Marion Zimmer Bradley, who wrote the novel, when I saw the movie, I was just STUNNED at how well it stuck to the book. It was like watching my mind reading the book all over again.

The movie (AND the novel, which you MUST read) portrays the factual, NOT fictional events that took place during the Era of the Christian, Anglo Saxon Crusades against the Druids, and other pagans of the land.

Ms. Huston, who portrayed Vivienne, Lady of the Lake, was PHENOMENOL.
As was the actress who portrayed Morgaine (Morgan, Morgan Le Fey, Morgana, and many other names she is known by in legend), the sister of King Arthur.

The movie brilliantly weaves the story about the WOMEN behind the throne, and puts King Arthur, Merlin, and Lancelot in more or less supporting roles, albeit powerful ones as well.

But the way this story is told, will leave you breathless.

A MUST SEE.

Conan the Barbarian, the movie that turned Arnold Schwarzenegger into a global superstar, is a prime example of a match made in heaven. It's the movie that macho maverick writer-director John Milius was born to make, and Arnold was genetically engineered for his role as the muscle-bound, angst-ridden hero created in Robert E. Howard's pulp novels. Oliver Stone contributed to Milius's screenplay, and the production design by comic artist Ron Cobb represents a perfect cinematic realization of Howard's fantasy world. To avenge the murder of his parents, Conan tracks down the evil Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) with the help of Queen Valeria (played by buff B-movie vixen Sandahl Bergman) and Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez). Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as "the perfect fantasy for the alienated pre-adolescent," this blockbuster is just as enjoyable for adults who haven't lost their youthful imagination. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars The man of few words.......2007-06-05

I'm still not totally sure of what I was expecting from Conan, but I was quite disappointed in the end. I'm shocked that Arnie went on to become governor of California, cos with the standard of the film, I really wouldn't have expected Arnie to go onto bigger & better things.

My main problem with Conan, was it wasn't Arnie's best film, plus, it's just really a film to showcase his body isn't it? And he barely says more than a few lines during the entire film. I've been brought up on Arnie movies, and although this was a good film, I just prefer some of Arnie's later films. I just wish he would stop messing with being governor and get back to what he's good at! You can see throughout the film that Arnie has immense trouble holding a sword, and doing sword things with it, due the size of his arm & chest muscles.

The rest of the cast was quite good, although I did think the actress who played his mum at the beginning, was a rough-looking Bridgette Bardot! Hehe. I did think Sandahl Bergman, who played Valeria, was really pretty, and the relationship between her and Conan was outstanding, although he only speaks five words to her throughout the film! Their relationship does turn out to be quite bittersweet though, which is very sad, but I won't reveal too much about it, for those who haven't seen the film yet.

There's not much of a storyline to the entire movie, apart from getting revenge, and the beginning is a bit strange in my opinion. Pushing that wheel thing round and round, what happened to the rest of the children?

James Earl Jones is absolutely hilarious, but I don't think he was meant to be. He's very androgynous, and the wig is stupidly set too high, giving the impression he has a huge forehead.

Conan has a certain unique-ness to it, and it stands out from many other similar films out there. It's quite memorable as well, whereas I think if Arnie hadn't become a big star, then it might have been less so. Yes, I'll admit I don't particularly Conan, but I sat through it, and can still remember a lot of it. And it still survives against the special effects laden movies of today, with people with too much money, try to make up for the lack of storyline with too many special effects (hello Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, I'm talking to you!). Conan manages with minimalist special effects and it works so much better.

I would recommend Conan to any Arnie fans out there, it's an excellent film, it just didn't do it for me. Now, where's Twins?! :)

5 out of 5 stars Easily one of the funniest movies I've ever seen........2007-05-30

No, I don't think it was meant to be a comedy but it serves up lots of laughs (for example, the wizard who lives in a treehouse). Its sort of unintentionally Monty Python-esque I guess you could say. It has a lot of campy value but there are also some great visuals as well. I laughed so hard I cried.

5 out of 5 stars Best fantasy movie ever.......2007-02-08

This film is the best sword and sorcery/fantasy film you will ever find. Unlike many others released at this time, this one was different. The film itself is wonderful to look at, the scenery is breathtaking and amazing and the fight sequences are well paced and exciting. The emotion of the scenes, be they angry or intimate, come across with all the power you would expect.

Arnold Schwartznegger does a nice job here. He has the great screen presence needed to bring Conan to life. Even the supporting cast (James Earl Jones, Max Von Sydow, Sandahl Bergman and Gerry Lopez) turn in memorable and powerful performances.

I remember seeing this film when i was 16 and the images always stuck with me. What stuck with me even more was the music. I had already been a fan of the music for Star Wars, but this was a thousand times better than that. I love the way the first four cues of this film are all merged together. For over 17 minutes the story is told through image and music only. And over half of this film besides that is told the very same way. Just watch the scenes of Conan finding his sword (Atlantean Sword) or the scenes where they are travelling (Theology/Civilization and The Leaving/The search) or even the long scene where they are invading the Tower of Set. Basil Poledouris did a great job here and this remains my favorite score of all time. I recommend this, along with this movie.

The documentary on this DVD, Conan Unchained, is filled with many interesting facts and really gives you an idea of what they had to go through to make this movie. Also on this DVD are deleted scenes, which for the most part are not very interesting and cut for good reason. However, there is one scene near the end of this film that does not belong here at all. Before the battle at the mound, Conan and Subotai talk about being young boys which cuts against the entire philosophy of this film, which was having a minimal amount of dialogue. This scene clearly breaks the rule and was a bad decision to put back into this film. It does make the film longer but also slows it down at a point where it really didn't need it. The added little sections at the end with the kings daughter are not as bad, but still unessential and should have stayed in the deleted scenes section. This only goes to prove that the longest version of a film is not always the best one. There are many examples of this if you've ever bought a directors or extended cut of any movie.

There is also a great commentary featuring the director (John Milius) and Arnold. This alone is worth getting this DVD. So buy this and enjoy it for exactly what it is. This film gets five stars, even with the scenes that were added. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Sword and Sorcery Film.......2007-01-14

A small handful of Sword and Sorcery films have decent quality. "Conan the Barbarian" is one of those few films. Arnold Schwarzenegger was perfect for playing Conan. I only wish that Schwarzenegger had made more than two Conan movies.

We meet Conan as a boy in a small village. Conan's life changes dramatically when Thulsa Doom (played by the ever-awesome James Earl Jones) and his band of merry men destroy Conan's village, kill his mother and father, and haul the children off into slavery. Slavery does not kill Conan, it makes him stronger. Conan becomes an incredibly powerful adult. Conan becomes so powerful that he ends up in fights for money. Eventually Conan's master sets him free.

Conan manages to make his way in the world. He eventually encounters a thief named Subotai. Conan and the thief decide to rob a temple, but a beautiful woman named Valeria is already trying to do the same thing. Conan almost instantly falls in love. Conan, Subotai and Valeria rob the temple, but only after killing a huge snake belonging to Thulsa Doom.

Somewhere during Conan's travels we learn that Conan wants to exact revenge on Thulsa Doom for destroying his village and killing his parents. Even though Thulsa Doom tries to kill Conan, and nearly succeeds, Thulsa Doom fails to realize that Conan is a powerful and terrible enemy. On the other hand, Conan is fortunate in finding a wizard (the late Mako, who is also the narrator) who is able to save him from the death that Thulsa Doom had planned for him.

The situation heats up for everyone as Conan attempts to take the daughter of King Osric (Max Von Sydow). Thulsa Doom is not pleased, but after his best attempt he is still unable to kill Conan and he is still unable to recapture the princess.

The end of the movie is almost anticlimactic, but it is chilling and artistic. If you have only seen this movie on television you need to get the DVD and see the uncut version.

Some scenes in this movie are incredible. The entire scene in Thulsa Doom's palace is gross, but realistic. The sword play throughout the movie is well done. The snake arrows were also nicely filmed. I also enjoyed the scene with the Witch. The scene where the wizard attempted to cure Conan used animation sparingly but effectively was also very well done.

There is some controversy among fans over the original ending and the expanded ending. The controversy exists because the original ending was taut, much like Conan himself. The expanded ending adds more film footage without added anything to the movie. The original ending is somewhat better. However, the original ending is not worth paying a lot of money for, so if the expanded version is the lowest cost version available, you should get it.

Sword and Sorcery is a relatively narrow genre. Very few movies are made in this genre and even fewer are very successful. "Conan the Barbarian" is one of the very best and a must-have for fans of Sword and Sorcery. If only film makers would give us more movies like this one.

Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Great movie (in it's original cut)... Don't get the 'Collector's Edition'.......2006-12-26

For the record, I'm a HUGE fan of the original Robert E. Howard character, and a really big fan of the forst movie (not so much the second one though).

If you're going to get this on DVD, go out of your way to find the original 1982 version, NOT the collector's version. The collector's version basically extends a couple of scenes that (quite frankly) were better left the way they were, and do NOTHING to enhance the story or character in any way. In this case, brevity can be the essence of genius, not additional exposition.

Another gripe is, this version is released on mono NOT stereo. FREAKIN' MONO!? What the hell happened? Even 'Freddy Got Fingered' is in 5.1 these days. This movie truly had one of the mose dramatic original soundtracks of it's time, and on this version of the DVD it's barely just an afterthought. Very disrespectful to the filmmakers, and the fans.

Seroiusly, I know there's an original cut on DVD somewhere. If you can find it, it's worth going out of your way for.

The intriguing Denys Arcand (director of Jesus of Montreal and Stardom) returns to the lusty, cantankerous intellectuals of his first film, The Decline of the American Empire. Remy (Remy Girard), a history professor, is dying of cancer, and his estranged and financially successful son Sebastien (Stephane Rousseau) returns to care for the old man. With the power of money, Sebastien cuts through bureaucracy and the law to give his father some comfort--comfort that Remy accepts with reluctance, because in his eyes the unintellectual Sebastian has betrayed all of Remy's principles. Old friends arrive and soon the conversation turns to sex, religion, history, sex, academia, sex--The Barbarian Invasions isn't very focused, but the very breadth of its ideas makes it worth seeing; few movies even try to grapple with morality or the state of our culture, let alone with this kind of intelligence and grace. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Academy Award(R) winner for Best Foreign Language Film in 2003, THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS is a provocative look at the many ties that bind a group of friends and lovers. It's not easy for a narrow-minded professor (Rémy Girard) to reconcile with his equally stubborn son. But soon, father and son find themselves gathering with their wide and colorful circle of family and friends to confront their differences, confess their secrets, and celebrate life! Winner of the Best Actress (Marie-Josée Croze) and Best Screenplay awards at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival -- critics everywhere hailed this outstanding motion picture as one of the year's best!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Seminal Quebecois movie.......2007-06-07

This was a great movie. I found it to be very philosopical and nostalgic. There was a point int he movie where you heard them talk about their various philosophical turns from Maoism to feminism to Quebecois separatism. The movie's title represents different invasions. One invasion was the Muslim invasion of the West(which he jokes about when he talks about them as rabid Mohammedans in the movie), especially concerning September 11,2001 and Quebec's immigration when all the main characters reminisce about the past. Another one was the sickness that had come to the elderly father in the movie that had made him a barbarian when his son had come to aid him. The conflicts that arise in this movie are numerous and the issues that arise out of them may represent an invasion to the confronted. When these issues are resolved, you see a passionate and loving story behind this scary title. This is a little slice of French culture that makes them so admirable. The writer deserves my highest regards no matter what interpretation you may see from me or other reviewers.

5 out of 5 stars Vive La Diference.......2007-04-26

I honestly did not know what to expect with "The Barbarian Invasion". Heck, it took me about a half hour to figure out it was a Canadian movie rather than the French movie I initially thought it was. I had trouble, at first, knowing when to take a scene seriously or satirically but I was catching on and finding myself enjoying every step of the way. There is a lot of political comment in this movie and the health care system in Canada and the labor unions come under the severest satire. The squemish may object to the sexual innuendos whether they be blatant or merely suggestive but, I have to admit, there was a lot of red-faced humor in this movie. Somewhere along the way, we glimpse some serious commentary about life, death, and relationships with one another. The element that raises "The Barbarian Invasion" above crude sexual slapstick and up to the level of respectability is the relationship between father and son. The way the film stays with that metamorphisis of anger and resentment into love and forgiveness is the beauty of "The Barbarian Invasion". The path that leads us there is riddled with so much gratuitous humor and political satire (as well as insight) that it's hard, sometimes, to stay on track. The ending, as objectionable as it may be to many, also serves as a reminder to how love can compromise standards to achieve the needs of a loved one. In that way, "The Barbarian Invasion" mirrors the strength of "Million Dollar Baby" in a most complementary manner.

What had me stumped the most about this movie was the meaning of the movie's title. I accepted it to mean the effect on the son when he tried to come to the rescue of the father. Although I understand the objections many may have, this is a skillfully made movie that tells a powerful message.

4 out of 5 stars An Inadvertent Warning Regarding Nationalized Health Care.......2007-04-25

"Barbarian Invasions" revolves around the final days of a decadent and third rate scholar dying from cancer. Remy is in his mid-fifties and his self indulgent lifestyle has destroyed a marriage and alienated a son and daughter. Remy's students apparently see through the man's shallowness and barely give him the time of day. Fortunately, the son Sebastien never embraced the father's immature socialist economic theories. He is now an affluent businessman able to spend money to help Remy experience a more pleasant death.

It leaves one speechless observing Sebastien's struggles with the Canadian public healthcare system. It is downright awful---and thoroughly corrupt. Patients are crammed together in small rooms. Thievery is rampant and hospital administrators are afraid of the unionized workforce. Bribes must be paid under the table to get anything done. Remy and Sebastien are even compelled to travel to the United States for advanced medical testing. Is Canada a Third World nation? This sure seems to be the case. Do you know anybody who is infatuated with taxpayer funding of health care? If so, make sure they see "Barbarian Invasions." This could turn them into hard core Republican voters before the end of story. No, this is not a great film. It is not for everybody. But there's enough here for those wishing to more fully understand the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of today's leftists. They truly number among the barbarians of our age.

5 out of 5 stars A Much Better Than Average Death.......2007-01-24

While the surface plot is certainly of the typical dying father/prodigal son format, and surely other writer/directors have explored the inextricable link between life and death, I found LES INVASIONS BARBARES to far exceed the commonplace in this work. Others here have summarized the plot, but it is the many background stories that have caused this film to capture my admiration and I can easily place it on my all-time top ten list.

I will admit that I'm a sucker for entourage films, yet this is one of the best of its type due to the many inadvertent interactions between the cast. The character of the son, Sebastien, played by Stephane Rousseau, perfectly captures the emotional distance, as it breaks down, between father and son, not through any of the philanthropic acts, but through a mutual understanding and respect, that the viewer can rightly imagine has been kept dormant all along.

4 out of 5 stars Carcinogens and Rabid Mohammedans.......2007-01-12

LES INVASIONS BARBARES is both a Canadian and cosmopolitan movie. For example, its opening depicts the horrors of nationalized health care, Canuck-style. But as our multi-lingual and well-heeled cast of hedonists arrives on the scene, the movie transforms to a series of dialogues -- some meaningful, some comic. The scenes often fade to black as the interactions continue, giving the film a realism that meshes nicely with its highly polished cinematographic sheen.

There are other moments of almost intentional dissonance. The gusto with which these people share details of their sex lives seems oddly exhibitionistic. Rémy Girard (playing a character named Remy, go figure) is an excellent actor, but he is so hale and energetic, it's hard to believe he is suffering from cancer. Marie-Josée Croze plays Nathalie, who is a heroin addict, but you'd never know it. Like everyone else here, she is expensively dressed and well-maintained. (In fact, this whole movie has the glow of money; it's a very attractive-looking film.)

All in all, this film is pretty much a gab-fest between highly educated and somewhat spoiled people. It is funny, but not hilarious, mildly touching, but never poignant.

SIDELIGHT: That's the writer/director, Denys Arcand, playing the corrupt union leader at the hospital.

If you're into sword-and-sorcery tales, look no further than this critically underrated big-screen fantasy based on the fiction of Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard. It was a troubled production and the outcome is far different from the more serious and intelligent epic that screenwriter Charles Pogue had originally conceived. Still, this is a giddy, energetic throwback to the Ray Harryhausen movie fantasies of the 1950s and '60s, and it's a perfect vehicle for Kevin Sorbo, the hunky star of TV's Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Sorbo brings an appropriate combination of depth and physical agility to the role of Kull (son of Conan), but he and director John Nicolella know better than to take this stuff too seriously. The movie's humor is nicely integrated into the dialogue without resorting to lame punch lines, and Tia Carrere is enjoyably campy as the evil goddess who lures Kull from his favorite concubine (Karina Lombard) as she plots to overthrow the kingdom of Valusia. Playwright Harvey Fierstein also provides comic relief in a scene-stealing role, and with an abundance of black magic, stunning Slovakian locations, and grand battles of good versus evil, this heroic adventure is more entertaining than you might expect. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Kevin over Arnold anytime.......2007-05-07

Well.. at least this time. This movie is a funny, action packed, sword slashing, babe rescuing, good time.

4 out of 5 stars "That's How A Barbarian Fights".......2006-07-13

'Kull' released in '97 is an enjoyable fantasy action/adventure starring Kevin Sorbo as the invincible barbarian Kull. There's not much difference in Kevin's characterization in this film from his 'Hercules' role he played so well for 6 seasons on television, but when you've got a good thing going why change.

The film has all the required elements; attractive hero Kull (Kevin Sorbo), beautiful love interest Zareta (Karina Lombard), sexy evil villianess Akivasha (Tia Carrera), likeable side-kick Ascalante (Litefoot), an oncoming invasion of demons, and a dangerous quest against impossible odds. What else could anyone ask for? Add to that a superior supporting cast of other would be heroes and villians and you've got a pretty good evening of entertainment awaiting.

Maybe it's not exactly a classic, but if you're a Hercules fan or just a kid (chronologically or at heart) who loves sword and sorcery movies this is one you'll watch over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars the best rainy saturday afternoon movie I know.......2006-06-29

Kevin Sorbo is fun to watch, with or without a shirt. But for a rainy Saturday afternoon, I will opt for this delightful actor, fencing across the screen, tossing one-liners such as "She said she was only 18" and doing in the bad guys, or bad girls, as the moment requires.

Is the story original? No, but it is intertaining.
Is the acting legendary? No, but does it matter?
Are the special effects the best I have ever seen? I don't know, I got lost in the movie again and forgot to pay attention to the electronic wizardry.
Does the good guy get the girl? Silly question, considering the good guy is a tall, gorgeous man with muscles and a twinkle in his eye.
Go get the popcorn, pour out a glass of iced tea, turn off the phone and settle back and just enjoy the show.

1 out of 5 stars horrid treatment of Howard's work.......2005-12-07

This movie is just horrible. Whereas Robert Howard's Kull was a somber, brooding character capable of both savagery and scholarly pursuits, this movie's Kull lacks any definable personality at all. Sorbo--horrible actor he is--simply is not the right actor to play Howard's first savage barbarian. Putting Acheron ahead of Valusia's time shows the writers couldn't even research the source naterial carefully enough to at least try to translate Howard to the screen. In addition, Howard's Kull is uninterested in women, while this Kull is almost as much a womanizer as Conan. (If they wanted to make another Conan movie, they should have done so. This is a completely different character.) Almost all--if not all--of Kull's supporting characters are removed in favor of holdovers from Howard's Conan stories (ie, Ascalante, Akivasha, et al). Though the story vaguely borrows from several Howard stories like The Hour of the Dragon (Howard's Conan novel), "By This Axe, I Rule!" (the story Howard converted from a Kull story into the first Conan story), and Exile of Atlantis (Kull's origin story), it is sloppy and incoherent and reduces his lyrical writing to dissonant garbage. Although of course it too has its flaws, Conan the Barbarian featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger is a much more satisfying rendition of one of Howard's creations. This movie should definitely be avoided while someone in Hollywood finds a way to bring a worthwhile version of something the late, great Texan wrote to the screen. Lastly, even the reviewer couldn't get things right, for Kull was an Atlantean of the Pre-Cataclysmic Age even as Conan was a Cimmerian of the Hyborian Age of several thousand years after Kull's time. Ah, well. I'm done venting.

5 out of 5 stars Ridiculous rock music + Tia Carrere + Action = Awesome.......2005-10-12

Tia Carrere is awesome in this movie, only better in Showdown in Little Tokyo. And Dolph Lundgren owns Kevin Sorbo. But still, this movie rocks. If you buy this movie, you cannot be disappointed - it's scientific fact. Unless of course you're a communist. But what kind of communist would be reading reviews for a product at an online store? Hypocrite!

The dark, brooding tone of Conan the Barbarian is replaced in this rousing sequel by a lighter, more humorous tone and one of the campiest casts ever assembled. This time, Conan is assigned by a duplicitous queen (Sarah Douglas) to escort a virgin princess (Olivia d'Abo) on a treacherous trek to a crystal palace where they will retrieve a priceless gemstone. Basketball champ and self-described Lothario Wilt Chamberlain plays Bombaata, a warrior sent on a secret mission to kill Conan, and the androgynous Grace Jones plays Zula, a wild woman who becomes Conan's loyal ally. Some consider this sequel a disappointment, but the film makes no apologies for its silliness, and that's the key to its success as gloriously pulpy entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Conan the Humorous.......2007-07-03

"Conan the Barbarian" was an awesome Sword and Sorcery film. That movie is one of the few well-produced high fantasy movies in existence. The expectations for this movie were high given the success of the earlier movie. It was probably inevitable that this sequel was not going to be as good as the original.

Conan has gone back to being a thief. He is doing yoga or contemplating a rock or something like that while his annoying cohort in crime Malak (Tracey Walter, "Annie Hall," "Midnight Run" and "Batman") is counting the spoils. Armored guys intent on some nefarious purpose surround the pair and attempt to capture them. Conan is annoyed at having his yoga interrupted and decides to show his displeasure by hacking apart quite a few of the armored guys until Bombaata (basketball great Wilt Chamberlain in his only acting role) has the armored guys cease throwing themselves on Conan's sword. We then discover that one of the armored guys is actually Queen Taramisu - no, wait, that is a dessert, I think. I meant Queen Taramis (Sarah Douglas, "Superman," "Superman II," and "Solarbabies"). Queen Taramis tells Conan that she can bring back Conan's beloved and dead Valeria if he will baby sit a hot blond while she seeks a phal...oops, I meant a HORN, which Queen Taramis needs to do something that we learn about later.

The rest of this movie is a relatively fun quest, interspersed with moments of humor. Conan gets drunk, ignores Princess Jehnna (Olivia d'Abo) because he is too busy killing people and thinking about Valeria, and tries to avoid having to think of witty one-liners. Grace Jones has a lot of fun as warrior Zula. Mako makes his second, marvelous appearance in a Conan film as the Wizard Akiro. One person who deserves mention is André the Giant's appearance as Dagoth. It is impossible to see André under the makeup. André made a more memorable appearance as Fezzik in "The Princess Bride."

This movie is flawed. The special effects are weak in some areas. Some of the acting is weak or obnoxious. The humor may have been excessive, and the rawness that marked the exuberance and honesty of "Conan the Barbarian" is lacking. In spite of these flaws, many of which appeared to help aim the movie toward teens and children, this movie has a lot going for it. Conan has a lot of non-stop action, and rarely does Conan take much of anything, except Valeria, serious. The outdoor sets are incredible. Conan wisely says little, relying on lots of facial expressions and bulky muscles instead. The action drives the plot and rarely gives a viewer time to focus on the flaws.

"Conan the Destroyer" is clearly inferior to "Conan the Barbarian." However, this movie is still a lot of fun and I enjoy it each time I watch it. The flaws in this movie may make the movie less than what it could have been, but the flaws are not enough to sink it. I give this movie a cautious recommendation to fans of the original, high fantasy, sword and sorcery, and Conan.

Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars typical 80's fantasy .......2007-01-24

I have seen this movie several times. While it does have a few good moments, it is not enough to save this film. So why do i own this? After the masterpiece that was the first film, why would i have bought this and subject myself to watching it again. The answer is simple. It's because of the score. And even that doesn't save this film. This film is a mere watered down take on the first that takes a great character and turns him into a mere shadow of his former self. All the moments in this movie intended to be funny really aren't. All the serious moments can only make me chuckle. I mean, who wants to see a basketball star (wilt chamberlin) trying to play some warrior. Or some singer (grace jones) trying to act when she should clearly be singing. How a song of hers wasnt on the score seems amazing. So be thankful that some corporate bigwig in some studio decided to not use rock music in this score. Be thankful that Basil Poledouris got the chance to make this score. Without it, this film would be even more of a monstrosity than it already is. But hey, i still have this film in my collection. But this movie is not for everyone. so if you want real gut wrenching blood and gore stick with the first film. Your eyes will thank you and so will your ears.

1 out of 5 stars This movie reeked.......2006-11-19

How is it possible that 7 years after Star Wars and 3 years after Excalibur, Hollywood could still produce a movie of such pathetic special effects, nightmarish casting, and ugly, amateurish cinematography? What a mess.

4 out of 5 stars An action adventure movie whose faults (of which there are many) are now charming in their cheesiness.......2006-06-07

Filming movies back-to-back is nothing new, the obvious savings and advantages on sharing production costs, crew and even marketing meant that the second and third BACK TO THE FUTURE films were filmed simultaneously in the late 1980s. Even today the two sequels to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN are being filmed hand-in-hand and there are reports that the second Daniel Craig 007 movie will enter into production shortly after the crew have wrapped CASINO ROYALE.
So, it should be no surprise then that the second Conan movie was part of a similar back-to-back deal in the early- to mid-1980s. But what is surprising is that the movie that partnered with the rollicking adventure movie was a quirky science fiction blockbuster from David Lynch named DUNE.
That's right, as that big-budget turkey was roasting under the Mexican sun, a pre-Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger was working on a much more entertaining movie with a colorful cast of characters.
Based (rather loosely) on the series of novels by Robert E. Howard, this 1984 feature was a sequel to the much darker and more sinister 1982 movie CONAN THE BARBARIAN and saw Schwarzenegger reprise his role as the monumentally strong thief and adventurer.
The director of this entry, the veteran Richard Fleischer actually owed his hire for this movie to another movie he had made almost 30 years earlier, 1958's THE VIKINGS. Producer Raffaella De Laurentiis had commented that since they had tried to copy that movies style and look for the 1982 picture, why not hire that movie's director for this production - and so Fleischer was hired.
Once hired Fleischer set about shaping the movie to his liking. One of the most publicized, decisions he made was telling an incredulous Schwarzenegger that he needed to buff up a bit more. Fleischer said that at the time of the release of CONAN THE BARBARIAN he had been disappointed that Arnold's incredible physique had been covered up for most of the movie, Fleischer also consciously set about making this a lighter entry to the series. The Conan here has a number of genuinely comedic moments, from punching a camel, a horse and attempting to teach a beautiful princess how to wield his sword, Schwarzenegger shows early promise in a genre that would not fully be realized until movies such as TWINS and KINDERGARTEN COP.
Joining Schwarzenegger this time is Sarah Douglas (of SUPERMAN II fame) as the evil Queen Taramis who enlists Conan's help in retrieving a crystal and in turn a magical jeweled horn. Former basketball star Wilt Chamberlain is on board also as the towering Bombaata, who is charged with keeping the princess Jehnna, who is destined to bring back the mystical object (played by the impossibly beautiful Olivia D'Abo) a virgin so that she can be sacrificed. Along the way Conan's ragtag group meet up with Zula, played by Grace Jones. The scene that introduced Jones' character sees her wielding a stick against a group of tormentors and reportedly she landed a few strikes sending a couple of stuntmen in the hospital. It was in fact her role here that brought her to the attention of the James Bond producers that in turn led to her starring in Roger Moore's swan song as 007 in 1985's A VIEW TO A KILL. Far from a great acting display her character still provides a number of memorable moments and is one of the movie's highlights.
The special effects are very dated by today's standards and Pat Roach (veteran of NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN and the Indiana Jones movies) makeup as the wizard Toth-Amon guarding the crystal really is appallingly fake-looking. But the movie is a good popcorn flick that is both fun and fast-paced enough that you can easily forgive these lapses.
Interestingly in the audio commentary that accompanied CONAN THE BARBARIAN Schwarzenegger commented that he would be interested in making a third Conan movie. Sadly this has not been forthcoming and now that he looks intent on pursuing political goals it appears less and less likely. A shame.
This movie is nowhere near as good as its predecessor, but it's still recommended for those rainy Saturday afternoons.

5 out of 5 stars A must have movie!!!.......2006-05-06

this was an fun fantasy-action movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger as a powerful kick ass/warrior. Arnold is so damm sexy with all the muscle showing sword-fighting ....And yes, the movie is visually interesting, too, even though, the special effects are obsolete and a little goofy...but thats ok...its an old movie now... A movie I love seeing over and over again...a movie that is a must have for any Arnold -Fan!

Conan's life changes dramatically when Thulsa Doom (played by the ever-awesome James Earl Jones) and his band of merry men destroy Conan's villa
