John Travolta is Vic Deakins, a bomber pilot who launches a devilish plan to hijack two nuclear missiles for big-time extortion. Vic never sweats, spews out great one-liners, knocks off money men with glee, toys with killing half a million people... he even smokes!

If you giggled at his "Ain't it cool" line from the trailer, you're in the right frame of mind for this comedic action film. Never as gritty or semi-realistic--or for that matter as heart-thumping--as the original Die Hard, Broken Arrow still delivers. If Travolta is cast against type, everyone else is by the numbers; Christian Slater as Hale, the earnest copilot looking to foil the plot, Samantha Mathis as the brave park ranger caught in the middle, Frank Whaley as an eager diplomat, Delroy Lindo as a right-minded colonel. As with his previous script (the superior Speed), writer Graham Yost moves everything quickly along as Hale and the ranger try to cut off Deakins's plan over a variety of terrains. We have plane crashes, car chases, a pursuit through an abandoned mine, a helicopter-train shootout, and lots of fighting between boys. Each time Hale finds himself perfectly in place to foil Deakins. You're suppose to laugh at the unbelievable situations. That's where Arrow is deceptive: its tone is right for the laughter compared to the mean-spirited Schwarzenegger and Stallone action films with labored jokes. Hong Kong master director John Woo (The Killer, Hard Target) pulls out all the stops--slow motion of Hale and Deakins's gymnastic gun play, nifty stunts, countdowns to doomsday. Woo may know action, but he needs more guidance in creating unique and stunning special effects. This is action entertainment at its cheesiest. Travolta and Woo later reteamed for Face/Off. --Doug Thomas

everyone should burn this dvd. Horrible acting, slow, moronic script, lackluster dialouge, Travolta is truly second rate B actor in this, Slater is appalling as per usual, (with the exception of Pump Up the Volume, which I found rather delicious as a feel good film)

The film just doesn't go anywhere, it's a movie you forget about a week later after you watch it. It is simply a 'fair' film, with frosh dialouge from a liberal arts major at a state college. In this reviewers opinion, it is probably in the top twenty or so worst acting films in the cinemas history. No emotion, no depth, a zero star. Horrendously crafted. It is as bad, or as comparable to 'Con Air', and we all know how truly pathetic that was.

5 out of 5 stars Broken Arrow...Yes it is cool!!.......2007-05-06

Catching a line from this movie the suspense in this movie is "cool". John Travolta and Christian Slater are at odds in this 1996 movie on the theft of two nuclear warheads in rugged terrain of Utah. At times it has you on the edge of your seat. It certainly is a far cry from Travolta's roles in Grease and Saturday Night Fever but one of his best!!

5 out of 5 stars Broken Arrow.......2007-03-09

I had originally taped this from TV but liked it so much that I wanted to buy it. It is a great movie and I like both the actors in it.

4 out of 5 stars John Woo's first American movie.......2007-01-16

Lots of action and typical John Woo action film. It's interesting to see American stars (Travolta and Slater)act under his direction. Travolta's performance is excellent as the antagonist.

3 out of 5 stars Good Movie - BUT NOT ANAMORPHIC.......2006-09-25

While the film is entertaining and Travolta and Slater play off of each other like oil and water, the aspect ratio is not Anamorphic, so be warned if you have a 16X9. Hope they correct that in a future release because this one keeps Wooing me back. (sorry)

A lame thredbare tired uninspired story of a two time loser picked up from jail by his low life friends. In the car a gentleman shoots at law enforcement officers. Now the two time loser is a wanted man with a third strike looming large in his life when he was a victim of circumstance. YET ANOTHER Insulting racist stupid trite base humorED DVD movie with absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever. If you liked this ghetto comedy flick which I did not you will likely enjoy another DVD of this same ilk called HOW HIGH! another DVD ghetto movie that is just as bad as 3 strikes just the same basic garbage with a different name. Nothing new here.

Oh and for those who say I did not see this mess because, I do not detail how horrible it is. I saw 3 Strikes on a satalite TV channel during my vacation. I am just so happy I did not actually rent or buy this ripe stinker 3 Strikes DVD Movie.

1 out of 5 stars Deserves Life in the bargain bin with no chance of purchase.......2005-03-29

3 Strikes...this puerile comedy about a two-time felon trying to avoid a life sentence was DOA from the opening frame. A screenplay full of stock characters and stock South Central jokes make a poor commentary on the California Justice System. In my three attempts to watch this movie all the way through I wound up turning it off around the thirty-minute mark each time.
To make a story like this work, you have to feel for the main character. Unfortunately he has no good qualities. He makes no efforts to do anything worthwhile. Getting out of jail, he goes back to doing the same things that got him locked up. In his attempts to clear himself he spends most of the movie doing a bunch of unfunny things that are supposed to be funny. I just can't laugh at car chases and shootouts in the inner city when so many young men and women die this way in real life. I can't laugh about a man throwing his life away going in and out of the prison system. To me, that's not a comedy. It's a tragedy. And the attempt to make this situation into comedy produces a movie bad it's criminal. It deserves life in the $5.99 Discount DVD bin right next to Ghost Dad and Nora's Hair Salon with no possibility of purchase.

2 out of 5 stars YOUR AVERAGE GHETTO COMEDY MOVIE.......2004-05-01

A CONVICT [BRIAN HOOKS] IS RELEASED FROM PRISON. HOWEVER, HE'S BEEN PLACED UNDER THE THREE STRIKES RULE AND HE'S ALREADY WENT TO JAIL TWICE! WHEN HE'S PICKED UP BY HIS HOMEBOY, HIS HOMEBOY GETS INTO A SHOOTOUT WITH THE COPS AND NOW THE COPS ARE ALSO AFTER HIM AGAIN! UNFORTUNATELY FOR THIS MOVIE, THE FUNNY MOMENTS TEND TO BE SCARCE. BRIAN HOOKS IS OK, BUT THIS MOVIE COULD'VE USED FUNNIER CHARACTERS AS WELL AS A BETTER SCRIPT. LOOK AT ''FRIDAY'' INSTEAD.

This gritty and often chilling documentary-style noir (based on a true story) about the hunt for a cop killer in Los Angeles is a must-have for fans of vintage crime films. Richard Basehart stars as a cold-blooded thief whose murder of a police officer sets off a citywide manhunt; the law, led by granite-jawed Scott Brady, tracks him relentlessly until the pair square off in the shadow-steeped drainage canals beneath the city (the same locale for the finale of Them!). Though Alfred Werker is credited as director, noir and Western vet Anthony Mann actually helmed the majority of the film; his muscular direction lends palpable suspense to the picture, aided in no small part by longtime collaborators John C. Higgins (who co-wrote the script) and cinematographer John Alton, whose Germanic-influenced lighting creates an otherworldly atmosphere. Supporting cast member Jack Webb borrowed the no-nonsense, semi-documentary approach for Dragnet. --Paul Gaita

Description

Based on true events, this film noir classic is a "thrilling, absorbing story, superbly told, well-acted [and] brilliantly photographed" (The Hollywood Reporter). Starring Richard Basehart, Scott Brady and Jack Webb, this "tense, exciting" (Variety) thriller was the inspiration not only for the TV series "Dragnet" but for many other subsequent "ripped from the headlines" crime dramas. Taken from actual case files, He Walked by Night is the suspenseful, action-packed tale of a manhunt for the most cunning criminal in the history of the LAPD. With a combination of ingenuity, state-of-the-art technology, sweat and sheer determination, the police painstakingly track down a brilliant, elusive thief and cop killer who seems to have the ability to vanish into thin air. But can they catch him before he murders again?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Basehart a Darkhorse!.......2007-06-27

Richard Basehart gives an under the radar performance as a lonely, troubled, cold killer in He Walked By Night (1948). His screen presence as the character Roy commands recognition among noir stalwarts such as Widmark, Duryea , Mitchum, and Lancaster. How this minor league studio produced such a realistic vision of Los Angeles noir is amazing. The acting, camera work, script, lighting, sets, and final print leaves little to be desired. A bit more plot intrigue would have earned this film a 5 star rating and a place alongside noir masterpieces such as The Asphalt Jungle, The Killers, and Out of the Past. The film boasts a wide range of characters; from mailmen, police officers, and crimminal technicians to a mentally unstable housewife. Unfortunately I own The Ultimate Film Noir Collection which contains 5 DVD's and 10 films one of which is He Walked By Night that omits closing credits. I accessed the uncredited cast of He Walked By Night by visiting a helpful website-the movie data base which contained interesting information about the film and cast. One comment I would like to make that was mentioned by previous reviewers is the comparison between the underground chase scene in He Walked By Night and The Third Man. The sound, editing, visual bleakness and desperation captured in the chase scene in He Walked By Night is superior to the plagarized scene in The Third Man.

5 out of 5 stars He Walked by Night.......2007-06-22

The semi-documentary approach Director Mann pioneered within film noir, seen in both "T-Men" and "Naked City," was realized most effectively in this picture, which methodically follows a manhunt for a cop-killer. The film is extremely tight, plays out in chronological time, and climaxes with a brilliantly-shot sequence in a city sewer. The spooky, skin-crawling performance of Basehart as the baby-faced killer is reason enough to add this movie to your must-see list of noir masterworks.

5 out of 5 stars Great and dark.......2007-02-20

As a kid I only knew actor Richard Basehart for his part as Admiral Nelson of the submarine Seaview on the 60's TV series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and wasn't aware of his edgy work in films that had preceded it. This precision tooled crime drama also includes several elements that would later become part of the Dragnet TV series, but this is a much more intense sort of work. Based on a real case, this fine black & white film showcases Basehart's portrayal of a brilliant sociopathic killer/criminal, but everyone is well cast and utilized; including a very young Jack Webb. Sort of half police-procedural film and half cold-blooded film noir. Basehart was also excellent as the man on the suicidal ledge in Fourteen Hours

4 out of 5 stars You could call this a Dragnet prototype. Jack Webb has.......2007-02-02

a supporting role in this one as Lee, a forensic expert for LAPD. He must have been taking notes on how to do it. It is a good noir, murder thriller. Los Angeles became a favorite city for these type of movies for lots of obvious reasons. But it is also a huge city, spread out, diverse & exciting. A real challenge for cops. Richard Basehart is Roy Martin/Morgan, a smart sophisticated thief. He graduates to murder, a cop killer. He has no record & thus is able to fly under the radar of the cops for a quite a while. In a documentary style that became familiar, the film shows the slow, many times boring process in catching a dangerous criminal. This is seen through the main character, Sgt. Marty Brennan, played by Scott Brady. He is a doggedly determined homocide detective. It is also personal for him. One of the cops killed was his friend. He has the vast police community as his support system. Apprehension of the guilty seems assured. But the final chase scenes are nonetheless gripping, eventually ending in the vast sewer system underneath the city. Good drama, good movie

5 out of 5 stars Just the Facts on an Elusive Criminal.......2006-12-30

He Walked by Night, 1948 film

This is a true story, only the names were changed to protect the innocent. Los Angeles was the fastest growing city in the nation, 452 square miles. An off-duty policeman noticed a man near a closed store. He asks for identification, and is shot by this prowler. The police stations are called and the police set up a dragnet to arrest anyone in the area and question them. Hotels in a four mile area and anyone on the street were brought in for questioning. [No probable cause?] Most were let go, the one sought wasn't caught. They search the MO file to find burglars who use picklocks; no success.

We learn Roy Martin is an ace electronics technician whose machines are leased to customers (reflecting post-war scarcity). One of them was stolen. The police are called and they set a trap. But Roy suspects something and arrives early. There is an exchange of shots and Roy is wounded but escapes to operate on himself! The police learn Roy worked for the Signal Corps. Now Roy begins a new career as a liquor store bandit (cash only, no credit as in small grocery stores). He learned to escape through the storm sewer system of Los Angeles, an underground highway. The police gather the crime victims to develop a picture of the robber. Wanted posters were sent out, but nobody knew this unknown subject. Roy eludes the police and sees a businessman to rob him. The police assign a new team to catch a man who has no friends, no records, no fingerprints, and can outsmart the police. The wounded officer comes up with a clue to find this seeming genius, Finally they get a suspect and a name! The detective tracks him down disguised as a milkman.

The police silently surround Roy's bungalow. His dog senses the strangers and barks a warning. But Roy escapes into his attic and jumps to another roof. When the police pursue, Roy jumps into the underground storm drain system to escape. The police arrange for converging columns, and Roy is trapped by a parked car. There is an exchange of shots, and Roy ceases to resist. The idea of a criminal who knows police procedure must be a bad dream for the police. Yet there are examples of this in some true crime stories. Jack Webb, who played a minor role here, went on to stardom in the "Dragnet" dramas on radio and television in the 1950s. This story could be a primer on police procedure. One significance of this film are the scenes of an extinct Los Angeles. Sparse traffic, sunny skies, no smog, small businesses, etc. are all gone. [The scenes of the hunt in the storm sewer system seems to be echoed in Carol Reed's "The Third Man".]

1 out of 5 stars Confusing Advertising.......2007-06-09

I intended to order the movie based on the novel Hatchet. This was not it; however, it was on the same page, with the same title. I thought it was the movie I wanted available in DVD format instead of VHS, so I ordered it. I think that this movie SHOULD NOT be listed on the same page as the one based on the novel Hatchet. Thankfully, I was able to return it for a refund, but I still had to pay the shipping costs.

2 out of 5 stars Cry in the Wild vs A Cry in the Wild.......2007-05-25

This DVD was paired with the book Hatchet on the Amazon site so I bought both items. However, I found out that this is not the movie that goes with Hatchet. The DVD I bought is "Cry in the Wild" The one that SHOULD be paired with Hatchet is "A Cry in the Wild". Now because I already opened it, I am stuck with a DVD I can't use.

1 out of 5 stars Amazon erred and blamed me.......2007-04-02

As an educator i was attempting to purchase A cry in the Wild - a movie version of Gary Paulsen's Hatchet to show to my students. I clicked on an icon that showed the cover of this DVD( erroneously placed on the web) but due to an error by Amazon's subsidiary was sent a movie about a murder in the 60s instead. When I notified Amazon via phone about the problem the customer service reps repeatedly blamed me and stated there was nothing they could do. I spent 35 minutes on the phone and was finally offered a return sticker which 3 weeks hence has yet to arrive. I am quite dissatified with ths encounter and will be reluctant to purchase from AMazon in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Great classroom movie.......2006-08-19

I use this movie every year with our middle school students to show how important it is to stay in groups and pay attention to your surroundings. This happened in a small town and can happen again. It is important for young people to see how much work effort and sadness takes place when a loved one is missing and may deter them from pulling pranks like not comming home or not telling people where they are. Nicely produced realistic but not over dramatic.

1 out of 5 stars cry in the wild.......2006-07-13

This movie is not what we thought we were getting. this movie is not showing a picture when you order. It is not about the young boy surviving in the wilderness!!!

Description

Featuring a mesmerizing and fearless performance from David Gulpilil (Walkabout, Rabbit-Proof Fence), THE TRACKER is at once a mystery, an adventure, and a pointed commentary on the atrocities committed against the Aborigines. In 1922, an Aboriginal tracker leads two mounted policeman and a civilian through the Australian Outback on the hunt for a black fugitive who is charged with killing a white woman. The group struggles through extremely rugged terrain inhabited by hostile aborigines, wild animals, and poisonous reptiles. Though treated as a virtual slave by the white men leading the search, it becomes clear that the Tracker has his own agenda. Through massacre and murder the party falls into disarray, stirring up questions of what is black and what is white and who is leading whom.

5 out of 5 stars The many tracks to justice.......2007-03-24

When Philip Noyce directed "Rabbit-proof Fence" - a film about Aborigine children escaping white captivity - he hired David Gulpilil in the role of the "black tracker". With forty thousand years of experience in the Australian bush under their belts [sic?], the Aborigines are trackers without peer. The European invaders quickly learned to use them in tracing missing children, criminals and other tasks. In the "Special Features" of "Rabbit-proof Fence", Noyce comments on his sudden awareness that Gulpilil virtually redefined the role. With no lines - none are needed - David makes clear that an Aborigine would find the children. But he "misses" them in passing, glancing over his shoulder to where they were hiding in the scrub. He presumed the real tracker sent after them had done something similar. In this film, David Gulpilil is the lead role, and clearly defines it in his own way. Even writer-director de Heer is unlikely have the savvy to devise a script to achieve what Gulpilil accomplishes here.

The story is of three whites, two of whom are policemen, to chase down an Aborigine murder suspect. The leader, a fanatic racist, is no exaggeration as Australian history has shown. The young policeman is an eager innocent, but flexible. To him it's part of a new job. The third white is a "squatter", conscripted to fill out the group. As "The Tracker", Gulpilil must lead them over a sparse landscape with few clues to the suspect's passage. The trail is scanty, the man elusive, and the whites are totally dependent on Gulpilil's abilities. In one scene, as the group arrives at the edge of a stony plain, the young policeman objects that there's no trail to follow. The expanse of pebbles is extensive and no sign of human passage can be made out. Gulpilil wearily points out the clues to the young man, who retires abashed as The Tracker smiles slyly. The hunt continues.

White-Aborigine relations are a sorry record, as this film dramatically portrays. Gulpilil is scorned and badgered, even by the men who so sorely need his skills. The hunters encounter a group of Aborigines, and the head policeman banters and abuses them mercilessly. Although Gulpilil warns that the Aborigines not only cannot speak English, even he doesn't understand their "different language, Boss". Resentful and frustrated, the officer shoots each member of the group. Holding up his pistol, he declares it to be "the language of this country". The hunt continues.

Director de Heer takes full advantage of the vast beauty of the Australian bush with compelling scenes. His best talents, however, come to light with the many close-ups of the tracker and white pursuers. David's expression at the killing of his fellow Aborigines is enigmatic, and he remains stoic throughout the film - until the end. Even when the leader threatens Gulpilil with taking "your own ears back with me" if they don't catch the suspect. He shackles Gulpilil who must now carry a length of chains while finding the trail. As the group closes with the fugitive, the tension builds under de Heer's skilful touch. The hunt continues.

De Heer adds some interesting nuances to this film. There are scenes introduced or portrayed by Aborigine-style paintings. The opening is one such, as are the killings of the Aborigine group and others. Additionally, de Heer uses Archie Roach, one of Australia's "stolen generation" to provide the background music - not quite Aborigine and not quite European. The effect adds fresh levels of intensity to an already gripping story. And the fugitive? De Heer's inventive story concludes with a surprising twist, one that North Americans may find daunting to comprehend. All the more reason to see this film for its revelations. 5 out of 5 stars Illuminating trek through the Australian outback.......2006-09-15

Rolf de Heer's outstanding film, "The Tracker" is a visually stunning odyssey through the remote, unforgiving Australian bush and liberally filled with social commentary.

The year is 1922 and a band of three mounted policeman is being lead by an aboriginal known as The Tracker, played by David Gulpilil. They are following another native Australian accused of murdering a white woman. The band is lead by The Fanatic played by Gary Sweet, a murderous bigoted Australian, who thinks of native Aboriginals as subhuman. Along the trail he displays his ruthlessness by shooting innocent blacks the group come across. Also along for the ride is a young naive Damon Gameau whose morality has yet to be corrupted towards racial inequality.

As the group move deeper and deeper into Aboriginal territory and away from civilization, The Tracker who is chained by the Fanatic like a dog, begins to follow his own agenda within the pursuit. As they continue, the Follower is forced to choose between the intolerant racist ideology of the Fanatic and fair and broad minded views of the Tracker.

Rolf de Heers brilliant depiction of the despicable racism evidenced in Australia at that time serves as a reminder that the dehumanization of anyone regardless of their differences cannot be condoned.

5 out of 5 stars Clash in Australia: Aborigine and White.......2006-01-11

It's impossible not to be a David Gulpilil fan...he can do no wrong in any film. He exudes an aboriginal dignity in the same way that Toshire Mifune exudes a samurai dignity. This is a film about his assignment as a tracker hired to find an Aborigine criminal. The film examines who is the criminal and who is the innocent...who has standing in the bush wilderness and who does not. A very interesting film and well worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars "All Men Choose The Path They Walk" ~ "Somewhere In Australia".......2005-10-30

I have been a big fan of Australian movies since '71 when I first saw a very young aborigine named David Gulpilil in 'Walkabout' and have followed his film career ever since. He had a major role in one of my all-time favorite movies 'The Last Wave' in '79, made a very brief appearance at the beginning of 'The Right Stuff' in '83, a cameo in 'Crocodile Dundee' in '86, another cameo in 'Dead Heart' in '97 and then landed another major role in '02 in the highly acclaimed 'Rabbit-Proof Fence.'

Oddly enough David's signature role was filmed in the same year as 'Rabbit-Proof Fence.' I'm talking about a movie that is totally unknown the the U.S.A. but was awarded the 'Best Film' award and 'Best Actor' award for David by the Australian Film Critics Circle. The film is 'The Tracker.'

This is one of my favorite movies about the Australian aborigines. The year is 1922 and David, known only as 'the Tracker' is guiding three white officials through the outback in search of another aborigine accused of killing a white woman. During the journey 'the Tracker' is forced to endure not only derogatory treatment from the 'the Fanatic' in charge (Gary Sweet) but must witness in silence the arbitary killing of innocent aborigines encountered along way. As tensions continue to build 'the Tracker' quietly plans his revenge and in the end true justice, aboriginal justice, is dealt out.

David Gulpilil dominates this film, he's absolutely amazing! Every expression, every gesture is filled with understanding, rage and humor. This is in every way his movie. Saying that, I also want to make mention of the wonderful supporting role played by Damon Gamean as 'the Follower.' His inner journey of personal transformation is extraordinary and a perfect counterbalance to David.

This film was both written and directed by Rolf De Heer. I'm not familiar with anything else he's done, but I'm certainly going to check into his previous credits. Another important element to this film was one of the most amazing soundtracks I've ever heard. The songs and music were composed by Graham Tardif and sung by Archie Roach. Unlike alot of soundtracks that are used only as background music to enhance the story, here they were an absolutely integral part of the movie. As the band of four traveled through the Outback the music and lyrics told the history and longing of the aboriginal people. I've never experienced anything more moving and emotional in a film.

My highest possible rating! A film to be bought and enjoyed over and over again!!

Polymatrix is a movie version of the OVA. While it's fun to look at, there is too much taken out of the original series. Yes, it still makes sense for the most part, but the relationship building between Naomi and Ross is not as strong, Jean Claude's motives don't seem to make as much sense, and the true bitterness Ross feels about robots isn't as telling in this film.

My biggest grlpe is the voice actors. Elizabeth Berkeley and Keifer Sutherland give the most deadpan and lifeless performances that it really sucks the magic out of the characters.

The OVA is far superior to this release.

    5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2005-06-17

I loved this movie. Made it on the top Anime/OVA and overall fav. movies.

As a Elizabeth Berkley fan, I was pleased with her work in this film. Not her best, but it worked well. I sometime though Jess from Saved by the Bell once in a while which in my view is not to bad.

The movie was great though, great plot, music, visuals, character interation/reactions, it was all good. It filled many genres.

2 out of 5 stars Skip This -- Get The OAV.......2003-11-14

There are tons of great reviews for this movie. That's understandable if none of them have seen the original OAV series this came from. See, back in 1994-1995, a 4-part OAV series called "Armitage III" came out in Japan. "Poly-Matrix" takes that 140-minute series and hacks it down to ~90-minutes. Thus this 1997 dub-title is born. So a lot of the story gets cut and things aren't nearly as good as the original. If you've seen the original, you'll be annoyed at all of the cuts and poor edit choices.

As to the dub cast (there is no Japanese cast on a dub-title as they simply re-edit an original Japanese product for American consumption), having big stars lend their voices makes it a better dub than a lot of anime titles/series. But it doesn't make up for the complete and utter hack job the series was given to form this movie.

Bottom line: If you thought this was good, the OAV is tons better. If you haven't seen this, get the OAV instead.

    4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2003-11-10

Armitage III - Poly Matrix is in a class all its own. Almost as if it were an anime version of Bladerunner, Ross and Armitage hunt down and destroy thirds. Similar in theme to Metropolis (2001), the characters are fixers in a world of technology gone awry. It is gritty, sassy and a bit graphic and is not for the weak of heart. Much has been said about the graphics but little is mentioned about the implications of the story of a sentient robot out to destroy her own. Unlike Ghost in the Shell, which focuses on the issue of cyborgs -- this one is steeped with robot lore. As part of the big four (Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Princess Mononoke, and the Armitage series) is a necessary element to appreciating this ever changing and very dynamic genre. Hyroyuki Ochi, although creating something short of a classic, has created a thought provoking saga.

4 out of 5 stars Not solid but close enough.......2002-08-09

The beginning of this video is quite slow. For about 25 minutes i wasnt impressed at all but once the plot kicks in a little bit things get a whole lot better. I didnt like how weak they conveyed Naomi to be though. Anyways the fight scenes are great and the animation isnt bad at all. The plot isnt to loose either. When i first saw it I was quite impressed and actually remembered the title only to buy it a year later. Still awesome. Naomi is hot too.

    2 out of 5 stars Just don't watch this..........2007-06-12

... if you have read and love the book. All the psychology has been removed. Imagine reading the book with all the first person parts removed. Yes, it really is that bad.

Vapid, terrible adaption of the original story.

    4 out of 5 stars O"Toole is the master........2007-02-08

O'Toole gives a weak plot life, his ability to make one believe in his character makes this a worthy project.

4 out of 5 stars Peter O'Toole at any price...........2005-05-29

...but at $3.95, you can't miss.

OK, at times the sound is muffled, the color washes out, there's a bit of streakiness, the picture seems to shake, and it has the appearance of the usual low budget film. BUT, the movie is absolutely riveting and the flaws are minor distractions. I watched it then had to watch it again.

Not the typical commando-trained man on the run flick, as in The Bourne Identity, but a slower paced, perhaps more thoughtful type of story. Sir Robert (O'Toole)goes to ground while being pursued after failing to assassinate Hitler and being tortured then escaping. We see his determination and ingenuity (again, not the usual Hollywood sort of stunts), but also the man he is.

I did not catch on to the reason why he went after Hitler until later in the movie, so disagree with an earlier viewer. However, I've not read the book before seeing the movie. There are hints about what happened and when I realized what had occured, it increased the tension, rather than ruining the end for me.

John Standing is terrific as the pursuer, Harold Pinter has a nice scene, Alistair Sim plays the doddering uncle well, but it is Peter O'Toole who makes the movie.

O'Toole is excellent at dry humor and getting across a page of dialog with just a look. There's a wealth of both in Rogue Male.

It's a shame this movie is not better visually and does not get much notice among O'Toole's works. It is, however, a movie that will keep you guessing about what will happen and is well worth a look. In a recent interview, O'Toole said Rogue Male was his favorite movie and it is easy to see why.

For parents: Since I have kids and do not trust the ratings system (and Rogue Male is unrated), I appreciate reviews that note what might be objectionable for kids.

Rogue Male is intense at times and shows Sir Robert being tortured- blood on his face and facial expressions during 2 incidents. There's a couple other violent moments- nothing very graphic or worse than what they've seen on TV. Teens might find it a bit slow, but interesting. Not for kids under 13.

3 out of 5 stars Poor quality DVD, but acceptable for the price........2004-08-18

The DVD has no closed captions or subtitles, and they're needed due to the poor quality of the sound track. Actually, the DVD appears to have been manufactured reasonable well, and its poor quality is due to its source material. The original film was obviously not a master and shows wear from use and poor storage.

Still, the quality is acceptable enough for me to keep it rather than return it for a refund.

3 out of 5 stars They Shouldn't Have Messed With The Book.......2004-03-11

The novel, by Geoffrey Household, is well-paced and builds to a satisfying climax based on profound revelations. The movie pushes those revelations to the beginning, which robs the main character of his motivation to swing into action at the end. I enjoyed the movie to a point, but this is one of those cases where the film makers would have done better to stay more consistent with the book.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine example of classic cyberpunk.......2007-05-10

Armitage III is an amazing story that takes many of the themes of blade runner and takes them in different directions, the reviews of the story itself are already out there so I'll make this review of the OVA specifically vs. the movie Poly-matrix. First of all, it's longer, about 80 minutes of footage was cut for the movie across the four episodes, the end result is a series that feels much less rushed and offers a bit more time for character development and further elaboration on certain plot points. There are a few scenes that they added or changed in poly-matrix so if you've seen that don't be surprised if there's something that turns out differently. The biggest difference between the two as far as scenes go is the ending, they both have the same point to get across, but I believe that poly-matrix did it better, just my opinion. Then there's the voice acting, for the movie they got Kiefer Sutherland and Elizabeth berkely to voice the two main characters, and they were fantastic. The OVA unfortunately had to rely on a smaller budget and lesser-known voice actors, who still do a wonderful job, but Kiefer Sutherlands rendition of Ross is, in my opinion, much better than the actor in the OVA. The end result, if you want a more complete, more developed and just overall longer Armitage experience, pick up the OVA, but don't skip the movie just because it's shorter, it is a wonderful experience on its own.
