A.D. Police began as a three-part OAV prequel to the popular Bubblegum Crisis series; these 12 episodes constitute the entire 1999 remake for TV. In the not-too-distant future, a massive earthquake has reduced Tokyo to rubble. The metropolis has been rebuilt as Genom City, named after the gargantuan conglomerate that manufactures Voomers (VOodoo Organic Metal Extension Resource), robots that provide most of the labor in the city. When a robot turns into a violent rogue Boomer, the A.D. Police has to resolve the crisis--by shooting the Boomer in its vital core. The most effective cop on the squad is Kenji Sasaki, but he's a coolly arrogant loner who operates on his own terms, rather than a team player. When his partner is critically injured in a fight with Boomers, Kenji is paired with the mysterious Hans Kleif, and the duo slowly forges a friendship. Kenji, Hans, and the rest of the squad are pitted against Liam Fletcher, the right-hand henchman of the Genom Corporation president, in a series of violent confrontations. This incarnation of A.D. Police feels like a standard-issue anime action-adventure series: it pits a tough, motorcycle-riding antihero against an all-powerful industrial conglomerate involved in illegal and unethical biomechanical experiments. The mecha designs are undistinguished, and nothing in the scripts, animation, or direction sets the program apart. Liam's violent attempts at hijacking a plane and a nuclear reactor may disturb some viewers. Unrated: Violence, grotesque imagery, alcohol and tobacco use. --Charles Solomon

Two out of three ain't bad.......2005-09-21
A.D. Police files 1-3 (1990): 8/10: Despite a third episode that is almost a scene remake of Robocop this is one of the sharpest anime's around. Sexist and racist in that unconscious Japanese way with over the top violence and just a dash of nudity A.D. Police doesn't fail to entertain. The first two tales are gripping and inventive if a little hard to follow (Character development is minimalist at best) with great moral arks about the downfall of artifical people. The third episode is a letdown and quite skippable. Tons of action keeps AD Police moving even when the story seems to stall.
13 up: violence, grotesque imagery, alochol and tobacco use
One of the best animes out there!.......2005-03-20
A.D. Police is a futuristic movie about a guy named Kenji Sasaki who works for the ADvanced Police. At first, it was pretty questionable, but after a couple episodes, I couldnt stop watching! Its not as violent as i thought I was. I thought that the enging could have been a little better but it was still very good. 2 thumbs up! A MUST SEE ANIME!

EXCELLENT.......2004-03-30
This series had some GREAT character development that ALOT of animes suffer from, yes it has action too but the characters are memorable! I only wish that Bubblegum Crisis 2040 had the dedication to character development that this series did! No its not the ORIGINAL AD Police but its new and DARN good! If you like a well told story and enjoy getting involved with good characters then this is for you and you'll thoroughly enjoy this!
It Grows On You.......2003-02-26
I bought the AD Police remake after watching BGC 2040. This piece is drastically different. I found once I abandoned the question "where does this fit into the 2040 storyline?" I enjoyed the DVD much more. The style of animation is definitely influenced by film noir. The shots are well composed and the dialogue well paced. The storyline had some weak spots and it could have been a better series if they made it longer and fleshed out the story.
I recommend this series to anyone who believes anime is art. It's also a great series to show a newbie who thinks anime is just for kids.
"Just how much worse can things get".......2003-02-06
AD (Advanced) Police started out as a take-off from Bubblegum Crisis, the 1990 story of a private squad whose purpose was to stop the spread of evil robots engineered by Genom Tech. Somewhat darker than it's inspiration, the original AD Police only lasted three episodes and then disappeared. But, when Bubblegum Crisis 2040 appeared in 1999, Director Hidehito Ueda retried the spin off idea with this 12-part TV series.
The new series has much less depth than its ancestor, and focuses primarily on the 'buddy' relationship between Kenji Sasaki and his new partner Hans Klief. Set in Genom City (a Tokyo revival) the AD team is dedicated to fighting rogue robots. Genom Corporation plays an anomalous role, sometimes villain and sometimes support. One of the grey areas of the story is whether all the mad robots are accidents or intentional. The underlying technical story arc is the creation of engineered cyber-humanoids and the inevitable question of where humanity starts and ends.
Essentially the series is a shoot out between the AD Police and escalating levels of robots. The phrase I used as the title is a regular refrain on the show, because the team does not fare very well. Liam Fletcher, who is a ringleader behind a long string of robot-nappings, generally runs rings around the police, causing a lot of blood and gear popping. Hans and Kenji are the cowboy heroes, breaking all the rules and occasionally actually saving the day. This isn't a comedy, though, and the two stars have serious troubles of their own.
If you are a logician you are going to find a couple things that don't make sense, but I wouldn't worry about it, the point of the series is a lot of action, and a bit of dialog, not an intellectual exercise. What is odd is that, while done in 1999 the art and animation is very retro - straight out of 1990. This didn't bother me, but I think a snappier production might have earned this series a longer run. But we're just viewers, ours not to reason why. The series is quite watchable, but is just a little too formulaic for my tastes.

The 1997 television series Burn Up Excess was the second follow-up to the original Burn Up OAV (1991). Rio, the four other women of the Tokyo Police Warrior Team, and Yuji, the lone male, swing back into action, battling the machinations of the mysterious Miss Ruby. Although the Team solves hostage situations, jewel robberies, terrorist activities, serial underwear thefts, and underworld wars, Excess features less violence and more slapstick than the original. But the point of the series is the jiggle shots, gratuitous nudity, and jokes about men driven to unseemly behavior by animal lust. The extras include a "jiggle counter" that enumerates the number of times each character's breasts bounce. The buxom character designs and over-the-top shootouts embody the clichés that lead many Americans to dismiss anime as "Big Eyes, Big Breasts, and Big Guns." Rated 15 Up: Nudity, profanity, violence, sexual humor, alcohol use. --Charles Solomon
Customer Reviews:
If You Blush Easily..........2005-05-12
I'm not sure how many US anime watchers are familiar with the term 'fan service,' which the Japanese use for anime that specializes in the vaguely prurient. Nubile bodies, plenty of jiggle, and a sense of humor that hovers between salacious and downright bawdy. This isn't really pornography, but skates a thin line, and if done well, can be quite entertaining.
Burn Up Excess almost makes fan service into an art form. Set in the same Neo Tokyo that has served as the setting for some very serious anime, this series follows the adventures of the Warrior team, all young, buxom ladies who switch between underwear scenes and police shoot'em-ups without a blink. One is always broke, another is a gun freak, and there is even one male to act as a foil. Together, they take on criminals, terrorists, and estranged fathers.
Seriously, this is a better series than it sounds - a lot of lighthearted humor and well done action to remind us that not every anime is either romantic or dire, or both. If you are likely to be offended by the horseplay, then pass this by, but the average American film is no better, and often has less of a story line.
Very good, very funny.......2003-07-27
Yes this is a great anime, girls, guns, explosions, pink cokroaches and bunny mecha.... It pretty much spoofs everything, including itself. Very light hearted even when they have a serious storyline. However, I must put out a bit of a warning. I was originally led to believe that it was a sequel to Burn Up W. It isn't. It has the same characters, the same quirky humor, but there are enough differences to put it out of continuity. The storyline from Burn Up W isn't continued, and I doubt it will be. Still, this is a pretty good anime regardless. It's funny, at times cute, and rather addictive.
Top notch all the way!.......2002-12-29
By far the most enjoyable incarnation of Burn Up. If you were let down by the amazingly bad wrap up of the Burn Up W series, don't shy away from Excess. No previous knowledge of the Burn Up universe is required, but it certainly doesn't hurt. The storyline from Burn Up W continues into Excess, but-- again, no previous knowledge is required.
The animation is excellent. Flawless. Spectacular direction and execution. Character designs have been tweaked and the series has a much more "serious" feel to it. If you think you'll miss the silly humor of the Burn Up W episodes, you may want to try before you buy.
As for the rest of us... Excess is dead-on. A very strong set of episodes. Extras are solid. The Jiggle Counter is not always accurate, but we could argue all day. ;)
Oh yeah, and if you like fan service, you just can't go wrong!
Thrilling and filled with laughs!!!.......2002-10-29
After two to three years of letting the license for this anime sit on the shelf, ADV Films has finally decided to reenact this anime for US commerical release!
Generally, a person would not watch an anime like Burn-Up Excess for any sort of educational value whatsoever. It does not have heart-wrenching drama or a stunning story that makes you sit up and say "Wow!" Rather, a person would watch this if you needed something to laugh at. And Burn Up Excess provides lots to laugh about.
Enter Rio, the foremost character of Burn Up Excess (and the one you see on the front cover.) She's broke, she overspends, and her answering machine is loaded with messages from various bill collectors. To pay all this, she works at Policetown HQ. However, what's special about her (or her job, at least) is that she belongs to Team Warrior.
Team Warrior is a small elite crime squad that serves as a police special operations unit. Along with Rio in this unit are Maya, a green haired gun maniac, Yuji, a driver/pilot of all vehicles and part-time pervert, Nanvel, the mechanical genius, Lilica, the hyper computer hacker, and Maki, their boss, who is always cool and collected. Together, they face off against the many terrorist who would dare to take on the law, or Maya's big gun, or Rio's special-issue police baton, whichever is convenient.
Ladies might not be as appreciative of this series as most gentlemen would be. This series is absolutely loaded with "fan service," or raw appeal for men. There is much suggested nudity (nothing concrete), as well as four of the five Warrior ladies have huge chest that will definitely lead to back strain later in their lives. Added to this is ADV Film's patented Jiggle Counter, an extra that can be set to show how many times the breasts of the Warrior ladies bounce during the DVD. This show was obviously created with the male fan in mind.
So, if you feel you are in need of some laughs, then pick up this popular comedy/action anime, as there's a lot of fighting and loads of humor to be served up!
How can u not like this series.......2002-10-22
Burn Up Excess is a great series. I enjoyed this disc very much, it was much better than I expected. The characters are all great, especially the machine gun crazy Maya. Granted this is a cliche anime. Pretty girls with big guns but it works. In my opinion it is worth every penny you spend for it and I can't wait for the rest of the series to be released.

ANOTHER COP OUT.......2005-10-25
One would think that movie with such an upbeat title would serve as a tribute to the law enforcers. This movie, however, continues to show the degenerate side of the law, what with more bad cops than you can shake a nightstick at. This movie is so one-sided though and lamely thrown together it does little more than confirm that there must be an awful lot of dishonest cops out there? Why doesn't someone make a movie about good cops? Oh, well, anyway this time around Marc Singer plays a second generation cop who finds himself on the wrong side of the law when he covers up for some of his more illicit buddies. Even the internal affairs head honcho is on the take. The bad guys are embodied by Michael Madsen and Wayne Crawford; Dennis Hopper is wasted in a small role as the seemingly dedicated captain; and Charles Durning makes an appearance as Singer's honest cop father. Steve Bacic rounds out the ensemble as the one true honest cop. The movie offers nothing new and if I were a member of the LAPD, I'd protest it.
Movies this bad are sometimes funny -- not in this case........2004-04-18
From the opening credits, where LAPD police cars race down huge empty straightaway streets I was wondering where they found huge empty streets in LA in broad daylight. But still, I had high hopes; Dennis Hopper & Michael Madsen -- it's got to be worth watching, there's going to be some seething, twisted intensity somewhere.
Well, there wasn't...There was, however: cut-and-paste characters, all of them one-dimensional, all of them saying things that seem right out of other movies; a multitude of short, pointless scenes that don't add to the plot; some strange pre-adolescent ideas of how relationships work; and a 'surprise' ending that isn't.
This is a very amateurishly written and put-together little mishmash.
The story is: Good guy cop ("Steele" --just the name gives you some idea of how much thought went into this) in a new, tough division discovers all his new workmates are corrupt. Does he report them to internal affairs? Does he take the money and become one of the gang? Or does he think about it for just long enough to fill out a movie?
(choose #3...which includes a large number of hasty, moronic talks with his dad, Charles Durning, a retired cop who really shouldn't wear trousers with pleats).
Dennis Hopper as Captain of the division puts on a worried/angry expression and leaves it there. Michael Madsen who plays leader of the baddies is so relaxed--no matter what the scene may call for--that he seems to be relieved that he's paying off his credit card bill, or whatever bizarre reason he had to appear in a terrible film like this.
I think the filmmakers were trying for something like "The Choirboys" that had a good amount of comedy and camaraderie to lighten its drama and violence. Here, though, there's no comedy, the camaraderie is false, the drama is silly, the violence is gratuitous, the characters are laughably simplistically drawn, the plot is old and overused--and with nothing new brought to it.
Low budget shlock.......2004-01-08
You would expect an action movie with good stars like Hopper and Madsen to have something going for it...NOPE! This video is a serious letdown. The plot is amatuerish and hackneyed, the dialogue is pathetic, and the story on the whole is dissapointing and BORING!!DON'T waste your money on this piece of low budget trash like I did. Shame on Madsen and Hopper!!
