Hong Kong martial arts master Jet Li plays a bodyguard from the Beijing secret police, sent to Hong Kong to protect a beautiful young witness to a mob killing, played by Christy Chung. Li turns her home into a high-security prison, complete with video cameras surveying every room, even her bedroom. Furious, Chung resists his efforts to protect her--until the threat to her life is made abundantly clear in a spectacular shopping mall shootout. As is natural under such circumstances, romance begins to bloom, much to the dismay of Chung's lawyer boyfriend, who hired Li in the first place. Made in the last few years before the British province of Hong Kong was returned to the rule of mainland China, The Bodyguard from Beijing makes many (possibly anxious) jokes about the differences between the austere Communist bodyguard and the lackadaisical H.K. police. Li's character is so consistently stone-faced that his usual boyish charm is repressed, and the movie emphasizes gunplay over acrobatic kung fu action, but there are still kicks galore and the usual Hong Kong combination of spectacular violence and outrageous sentimentality--all captured in stylish, glossy cinematography. Like Robotech, Voltron is a cut-and-paste combination of unrelated series created for American TV. Part of the early wave of "Japanimation" that helped to build an audience for anime in the U.S., Voltron also contributed to the fad for transforming robot toys. The episodes inCollection Three, the "Green Lion" set, originally aired in October and November of 1984. Four young stalwarts from the Galaxy Alliance, Keith, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge, pilot the lion-mecha that link to form the giant robot Voltron; Princess Allura of the planet Arus took over the fifth lion after Sven was wounded in battle. After being missing in action for some time, Sven (who talks like Wally Walrus) reappears in episode 41, but stays on planet Pollux with Princess Romelle as an ally of the Voltron Force. In each episode, Lotor, the son of King Zarkon, and the evil witch Haggar concoct a new scheme to destroy Voltron and seize control of Arus--only to be defeated by Voltron between the last commercial and the closing theme song. Comprised of re-edited footage from Hyakujuo Go-Lion ("Hundred-Beast King Go-Lion") and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV ("Armored Fleet Dairugger XV"), the episodes have obviously been assembled like mosaics, with extensive dialogue covering the gaps in the visuals. Like Robotech, Voltron has a special place in the hearts of adults who watched it as kids. Kieth, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Princess Allura have sucessfully awakened the legendary robot guardian, Voltron. After countless battles, they've pushed back the forces of evil King Zarkon, freeing the Princess's home, planet Arus, as well as their sister planet, Pollux. But they couldn't save the princess of Pollux, Romelle, from the clutches of Prince Lotor. The Voltron force is dedicated to defense, and are unable to launch a full scale assault on Planet Doom to rescue Romelle from Lotor's Pit of Skulls. Then, a batch of slaves arrives on planet Doom, and with them Romelle's last hope. It's a former member of the Voltron force, now a dedicated revolutionary bent on toppling King Zarkon: Sven!

This collection was just great! The only problem I had was that I played in my DVD player and it wanted to skip, but I think that it was the player because I played it in a couple of other DVD players and it played great!The sound was and Picture was outstanding! If I didn't have the skip, I would've given it a 5 stars!I'm getting antsy waiting for the next one! and the Fleet of Doom! If you like Voltron, You have to get this product!

Like Robotech, Voltron is an anomaly: an anime series that never aired in Japan in this form. If you are thinking about buying this DVD, YOU SHOULD. If you loved 80s cartoons as much as I did (yes, I grew up on the 80s), then Voltron is the number one DVD collection that you HAVE to own. The packaging is beautiful and the insert includes a synopsis of each episode. The episodes are just as I remember them! I watched the entire first season in about 2 days. I couldn't get enough. I can't wait to get Seasons 2 and 3.

I was so excited to see Voltron coming to DVD. It was far and away my favorite show as a kid back in the 80's and I couldn't wait to see them again. Unfortunatly the novelty wore off before the first episode was even over. I know its a kids show but the voice acting is horribly annoying, they re-use the same animation sequences over and over, and the plot, well, its ahh...really ...really ...stupid. Advise to rent disk one before buying the whole set(s). Make sure you still enjoy it as an adult. Oh yeah, Thundercats is the same story, not as cool as you remember.

Voltron is my favorite. I love Voltron because the Lions fight as individuals and together as Voltron. For those who are dissapointed: Don't expect that since it's in a metal tin or on DVD that the sound quality or image quality has improved. Voltron is the same, you are the one who has grown up and has become used to the technology of the new millenium. Voltron lives on in our hearts!

My Disks Stopped Playing.......2007-04-06

This is a great animated series.

However I already returned it once and my new dvds stop playing at the same place which is the worst possible episode to stop playing:

4. "The Missing Key"

It doesn't sound like anyone else had this problem so I assume I'm getting a bad batch of dvds.

I would possibly suspect my dvd player except that they both stopped at the same place which makes me think I've got another copy that was made from bad originals or something along those lines.

Disk 2 also stopped playing although I haven't tried watching it yet with my new set since I'm so disgusted right now.

I guess I'll try ordering it from some other seller maybe they have different ones.

It was especially moving because that wrongly accused teenager was such a wonderful, patient young man. He remained quiet, stoic, and soft-spoken throughout the tiral. But then when his mother testifies on his behalf, tears started to well up in his eyes. It really got to me, and I was crying, too. You will totally cheer for the defense! Usually this sort of courtroom docudrama doesn't get me emotional or riled up, but this film really does it for me!

Never have I seen such a powerful, gripping documentary on the criminal justice system.

How can one begin?
I immediately, upon finishing the documentary, thought of Brenton Butler, the defense attorney, Patrick McGuinness, who is the best defense attorney as I have seen for such a trial. I thought of the wronged people of the world, the innocent people behind bars, my brother, miles away in a town foreign to him, my other brothers, my friends, those who can, upon one stroke of a pen, one lie on the lips of a detective, at any given moment, be torn away from those they love, those who love them....at any given moment, lose the splendor of what brought life to the human eye to begin with.

I shall never forget this case; it reminds me, now, of why I chose my occupation and why I am degreed in another.

For those who want justice for this country and the state of the people of the world, I urge you to watch Murder on a Sunday Morning.

Inspiring story of faith in Christ.......2006-03-11

A very well directed docu-drama. It follows de case, in real time and in situ, of the 15 year old black young man who was accused of murdering a white woman in front of a motel on a Sunday morning. The special thing about this case is that the police seemed to pick the first young black male who happened to be walking about his business on the street at the time. The rest of the details you should see yourself. It's all as amazing as true. By the way, blaming it on white racism is the wrong conclusion if you were thinking of that. There's more, much more than that if you are willing to see it for yourself.

This video is a good, though saddening picture of human nature.

But I have to emphasize the watching of this video for another completely different reason which has not been pointed out in most of the reviews:

To me this is a spiritual uplifting document, a blessing for believers in Christ and a call to the ranks of the real King for those who are still skeptical. Why? The family is a true and faithful Christian one. They congregate with their fellow Christians continuously to pray devotely to Christ for their son's freedom. The director does not make this the subject of the film but leaves it in the background respectfully. Before every important moment in the case we see, we ourselves emotionally, how they unite and put their faith in the true Savior. The camera, from a respectful distance, quiet and still watches the scene...

And for the end I have to quote what Derek Prince said to a colleague-reviwer of this website when he was asked what was the most important thing he had learned about life. He said: "God is faithful. He keeps His word. He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. I cannot emphasize this enough......"

And this makes this documentary a wonderful witness of the living Jesus. The only God who died (for you) and resurrected and lives now, again, in the form of a Holy Spirit, in those who put their trust in Him. He is awesome and omnipotent. Did the director realize what implications this video had? Is he an instrument of God without knowing? Would be sad, wouldn't it?

Salvation is free. Why would you want to pay for it.

According to the website for Eagle One Media, the maker of this product, the company is a well known producer of video comics. That is comics shot to be played on a DVD format. That being the case, i wonder if that's what this product will turn out to be, as it is based on a series of Voltron produced comics going by the same name,'Revelations.' The website indicates that the product includes sound effects and actors' voices, which means, even if it is a video comic and not a feature-film animation, it will still, nonetheless have the feel of an animated feature film. I think potential buyers should be aware that is may not be an animated feature and bears no relation to the original makers, producers, etc. or the original Voltron cartoon series.

My four year old loves this movie. He thinks Gloomius Maximus is great. He watched it for the first time about six months ago and has been building ray guns to "gloom" and "ungloom" us ever since. It has really engaged his imagination. He pretends about rockets, pirates and robots. It started him asking questions about space and real rockets. One day he even organized his whole pre-school class to play "galaxy" - a game he made up about rockets and planets - while on the playground. He can take or leave the TV show, but this is his favorite thing to watch on TV.

We bought this DVD in desperation while on a LONG road trip for our 20 month old. We hooked up the laptop and played the DVD for her while on the road and it was a LIFESAVER!! We bought 4 different movies and she wanted THIS one played over and over. It really is a cute movie and I love the Olie family.

I love that the characters always remain positive and "can-do", there isn't any violence (the worst is when Gloomious takes a toy from a child), and it's all about having fun.

Now that we are home, I am limiting her to watching it once a day, but TRUST me...she could watch it completely mesmerized over and over and over....

I am now on the hunt for more Olie movies!

My daughter (12 months old) loves Rolie Polie Olie and the Great Defender of Fun is no exception! She loves it and is not at all scared by the character Gloomius Maximus or any other parts of the movie. Even I love this movie! The animation is excellent, graphics are captivating and the color is crisp! Buy it you will not regret it!

Not in the same spirit as the TV show.......2003-03-19

My 4.5 year old LOVES Olie, but finds this movie much too scary. It has a dark side that isn't usually part of the up-beat, happy show we see on TV. I've wondered if this movie and the TV episodes were created by different writers, they're so different from each other. If your child is sensitive to gloom and doom you might think twice before getting this movie.

Live TV at its best.......2006-03-25

Studio One made a name for itself doing teleplays for television. These plays were preformed like stage shows for the camera. Most were shot on video live. In the late 1970's CBS destroyed most of these viseo tapes.

The Defenders video tape survived. I know how nor why. If you are a Star Trek Fan, this 1957 tele-play has the acting talents of William Shatner, long before he donned the Star Fleet uniform of James T Kirk and beamed aboard the Starship Enterprise. He plays the son of a father and son legal team. You see, even before he was Denny Crane of TV's Boston Legal, he was a lawyer

This teleplay also starred Ralph Bellamy (as Shatner's Legal eagle father), Steve McQueen (before he was in TV's Wanted: Dead or Alive and the movies The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape) and Martin Balsam.

This was the age of Live TV. However, You could not find a flub in these two episodes of live TV. Nor could you find a bad preformance in these shows

If you are fan of TV history, The Defenders became a regular TV series in the 1960's. Bellamy's father role was played by E.G. Marshall & Shatner by Robert Reed (TV Brady Bunch).

If you are a fan of old TV, a good collection to showcase classic Television

Poor vid quality but has Excellent eng subs.......2007-05-15

the eng dubbed version i find kindna cheesy, so i'm glad i purchased the original version. although the video quality is poor (Average) and the eng sub (harddubbed) is hard to read, quality of the eng sub is excellent; that's what I always look for - good to excell eng subs. i wish/hope that in the near future the producers can optimize this movie with better vid quality and same quality eng subs (not eng dubbed, that is). also, yes, i highly recommend this movie to any jet li fan/collector.

fantastic jet li movie, though a bit cheesy.......2006-11-18

The Defender is perhaps one of Jet Li's more different and original of all his HK made films. The movie relies on a pretty good story filled with multiple aspects of conflict and suspense, rather than a lot of action. The lesser amount of action never phased me because I thought the movie does well without it. Thats not to say there isn't any, just not as much as most of Jet Li's movies. Fortunately, if you can't help but desire a good fight, the finale of the movie presents one of Jet Li's better fights scenes I have ever scene, a fight of originailty etched with emotion.

There are a few set backs from getting a 5 star rating. The English dubbing, as always, gives the movie a cheesy feel sometimes and makes the acting seem a little week. Aside from the dubbing, there are some moments in the movie that are a bit cheesy. Jet Li's character and the woman he is ordered to protect endure continuous scenes of tension that are great to watch, since he takes his work seriously and she has a rich boyfriend who has hired the bodyguard. Though entertaining and suspenseful moments arise from these two, they also present the cheesy moments, especially the ending of the film.

The Defender is a great addition to anyone who loves Jet Li movies. I'd have to say this is one of his better ones overall. Great story filled with suspense, and a wonderful final fight scene that is amongst the best. If you are looking for movie filled with action throughout, it may not please, but this is a good all-around film, giving more than most martial art films would.

"What a Bodygaurd!!!".......2006-05-08

This movie was made in Hong Kong, starring Jet Li, directed by Corey Yuen. Although it is not Jet Li's best, it is nevertheless worth watching.

The bodyguard (Jet Li) is assigned to protect the rich Christy Cheung, the only remaining witness to a murder case (the other two witnesses were killed weeks before the trial). At first, they don't get along, largely due to the stiff bodyguard violating her privacy, installing security cameras not only throughout the house but also her bedroom. However, a romantic relationship develops after she violates security procedures and goes shopping, only to be saved from being narrowly killed by several assassins, due to the first rate fighting skills of the bodyguard.

The movie starts slowly but it builds up to excellent martial arts towards the end. The major disappointment is that the producers forgot that this was supposed to be a martial arts movie and introduced guns unnecessarily, which spoils the action. The action is not as much as I would have wished. However, the fight, towards the end is first rate, particularly when Jet Li fights Ken Lo (Jackie Chan).

However, for those who like guns and also like martial arts, then this movie will excite you.

Okay, Not Great.......2006-02-23

I'm a big fan of Hong Kong action movies, but Bodyguard from Beijing was merely okay. Jet Li stars as a doughty tough bodyguard from the mainland hired to protect a spoiled rich girl from Hong Kong. Sparks fly when he tries to restrict her movements and jet-setting lifestyle. The two eventually fall in love, despite the fact that his new girlfriend is already the mistress of a wealthy man.

I liked the film, but didn't find it anything to shout about. The girl's nephew Billy was way irritating. Jet Li was handsome and there were some great martial arts feats but this DVD was nothing to write home about. 3 stars. Average.

Jet Li is way out of Christy Chung league.......2005-08-08

After Christy Chung wittness a mob killing she needs protection 24/7. Jet Li a secret agent is sent to protect her at all cause. Her house has nothing but hidden cams to watch for bad guys. At first Christy didn't want Jet Li's help and start giving him a hard time until she was being chased in a mall by the mob tring to kill her. Lucky for Li he kill all of them and saved her. Now she is starting to appericate him and tring to get to know him even be his lover. But it's good for Jet Li to blow her off cause she should of gave him a chance at first. She thought she was too good for him so served that Bi*ch right.

Great Flik .......2007-03-09

I have always had a weakness for action films, and though I usually avoid ones that promise to have a lot of suspense simply because I am actually easily scared I found that this movie is fantastic despite the few areas that are full of suspence are deftly handled and add to the plot of the story rather than being just there to scare you. the plot is well thought out and executed...I must say I was surprised at the ending! although in hindsight I should have seen it coming. Anyway, I love the way it was directed, the lighting was perfect in every shot...well thought out, you know, sometimes in movies something is supposed to happen at night but it seems really bright outside? well, that doesn't happen in this movie. death scenes are believable, blood strategic rather than over the top...not that there isn't a lot of it...and really, really well acted. There weren't very many awkward parts, where you didn't believe that the charecters really were who they thought that they were. And though I normally find that political stories are a bit dry, or totally paranoid I found this one to be really engaging and not the least bit boring. On the whole it you like action films, and slightly surprising plot twists, I suggest this movie wholeheartedly.

Shame on Dolph.......2006-07-22

Easily the most wasteful use of cinema in ages. The fact that many reviewers here actually gave this movie more than one star is a frightening comentary on society. Are these the people who will one day be running our great country? How low will we go? This movie pretends to be something big but the big question is what happens? Nothing! Nothing but endless shots of Dolph and other people walking around properties doing nothing. 8 million rounds of ammo fired at nothing just to make noise. And what's with this guy who after every round must point his gun at the ceiling? If you are firing at a bad guy, the last thing you do is take your aim off of the suspected area of danger. Geeezz! How dumb can you get? There are endless scenes of people looking off into space saying nothing. Here is a scene. Shot of some guy with a gun saying and doing nothing for two seconds, then two seconds of Dolph doing nothing, then two seconds of some gal, two more of Dolph, two more of some guy, two more of the girl, two more of Dolph all without a single world!! What a moronic, pointless movie! When someting is said, the dialog has no substance at all. Walk out of the room, fix a sandwich, water the cat, have a quickie, come back and you haven't missed a single important plot point BECAUSE THERE IS NO PLOT! I want those 90 minutes of my life back that I wasted on this joke! I can't imagine the other people here giving any kind of review to this movie that is above the level of litterbox. Don't waste a moment of precious life watching this pointless flop. The rest of you guys giving this movie more than one star, PLEASE, in the name of all that is holy, try watching something of substance (Jerry Springer's idiotic show would be an improvement) and please cut down on the video games, Dilly Bars and popcorn with extra butter.

This film contains the action scenes we expect from such a vehicle, but the writers for some reason decided to tie these scenes to a plot so complex, and (for me) unlikely, that it comes to resemble a comedy of some kind. Layer upon layer of double-crossing and false identities are revealed between burts of automatic gunfire until the viewer, who has settled into his easy chair with his bag of popcorn, expecting to enjoy a typical Lundgren bloodbath, is badly confused and shaking his head. They tried to do far too much.

I think the complex plot also causes several large plotholes. For instance, just who are these innumerable masked attackers, and how did so many appear in Romania? And how could this massive gun battle rage for hours outside Bucharest without somebody (e.g., the police) noticing it? (The Romanian Army doesn't show up for ages).

So how many movies has Dolph Lundgren been in? Quite a few, right? Well, I have to say, this has been one of his best works so far. Maybe it's because he also had the whole directing thing going on, I don't know. What I do know is that he did a great job with the movie in both aspects (directing and acting).
