5 out of 5 stars A good review from a Local!!.......2007-02-18

I must say I saw this film with a group of friends here in Hawaii and the theatre was jam packed. This movie shows both the good and bad sides of Hawaii. Where movies like "Aloha Summer" and "North Shore" failed "Beyond Paradise" succeeds. The story focuses on California native Mark[Roy Newton] as he moves to Hawaii to live with his mother. He is befriended by three local students named Zulu[Kalani], Ronnie Boy[Lorenzo Callender] and Keao[Daryl Bonilla]. We then are taken on a journey of both beauty and violence and what a journey it is. Aside from one flaw[which I'll talk about a little later]I thought this movie was excellent. The cinematography is superb and the story is brutal but utterly endearing and touching. But the thing that stands out most is the acting. This film showcases some young talented actors. I'd take these actors over any from the "Dawson Creek", "Scream" crowd. Newton is okay but shows little depth and even lesser growth as Mark[this being the flaw I mentioned earlier]. Being on the screen with talented actors as he was only made his so-so performance stand out more[which in his case was not a good thing]. Kalani is a charmer as the storytelling Zulu[not a bad surfer as well]. Callender delivers a solid yet heartbreaking performance as Ronnie. He's got talent. Bonilla distinguishes himself as Keao. He is a scene stealer. This guy is something special to watch as the crowd just ate him up. Priscilla Basque[Lehua], Troy Ignacio[Aku] and Eric MacArthur[Jason]do good work in supporting roles. I seriously recommend that people see this film for just the great acting alone as this movie delivers 9/10

4 out of 5 stars BIG ISLAND!!.......2004-08-06

i enjoyed this movie...it shows the different kinds of people living in Hawaii...some things are a little exaggerated, but there is some truth to it. It's a good movie about real friends.

4 out of 5 stars Rob Marley's Review.......2004-03-08

This was a great movie about the struggle of a young man from the mainland United States who experiences the harsh realities of the Hawaiian islands and its' culture. The director of this movie used graphic representations of the "local" native hawaiian's views on foreigners to depict a society based on drugs, violence, and crime. This however, is not the total truth. Being from the islands, I was able to see the contrasts between what is and is not factual. However, being foreign to the Hawaiian islands might lead one who views this movie to stay away from this paradise. All in all, this is one of those must see movies for anyone who enjoys watching raw, on the edge action about an incredible society in the middle of pacific ocean.

3 out of 5 stars Eye Candy!!!.......2004-02-01

Aloha! I think the directors portrayal of a mainlander's transition to the local Hawai'ian life was exaggerated. I'm a mainlander from the east coast who relocated to Hawaii and had no problem being accepted by the locals (with the exception of understanding the pidgin). Although I am not a "haole"(I am Filipino) I was raised in a white environment and call myself a coconut (brown on the outside, but white on the inside). Even the pidgin spoken in the movie wasn't quite right. However, I do commend the casting crew on their choice of character casting - I would definitely say Zulu (Kalani) is a heart throb and my personal favorite is Ronnie Boy (Lorenzo Callender). I've run internet searches on Lorenzo but have not been able to come up with much information. Maybe someone out there could help me? I was wondering about his current projects, personal info (hobbies, interests, pasttimes, age, location, etc...). Does anybody out there have any information on Lorenzo? He's definitely EYE CANDY and I'd like to learn more about him - better yet, seeing that I live in Hawaii, any possibilities I could meet up!!! Please get back to me if you can help "ShezGotGame@aol.com&quo t;. Much Mahalos!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka Aina I Ka Pono" , "Imua Hawai'i".......2003-11-09

When I first saw this in the movie theater back in 1998, I must say my first reaction was "I can't believe how this white guy (the director) portrayed the hawaiian locals as." And the fact that it was a true story didnt help any. But then, nearly 5 years has passed when it came out on Video and DVD, I saw it again and I can honestly say I got a total different perspective on it! I was almost happy to know a movie about the Hawaii I was born and raised in! And the sad part is, you can NEVER understand the full extent of this film unless you were born and raised on the islands. My family and I are originally from one of the small islands, Molokai. But I was fortunate enough to have lived on 4 different islands, and its the same thing on every one of them. I do realize the kind of hate and blame we hawaiians have for the white people, and I can't say that Im not one of them, but I think by realizing it and trying to work at it is the first step. So if your interested in learning a little bit about my culture, along with some drama and some laughs this is definately a movie to watch, and maybe someday own!

5 out of 5 stars You are my sunshine!.......2006-11-16

Great DVD for learning the ropes and getting the inside scoop on what to do and where to go. Ended up saving LOTS of time and money on our trip. The footage was so real (and gorgeous!!!). Akumal actually looked just like the DVD showed...not like the run-of-the-mill garbage you can get from travel brochures. TWO THUMBS WAY UP!!!

5 out of 5 stars Paradise and how to find it. This Video ROCKS!!! saved me $$$$.......2006-11-13

I'm so glad I watched this video before I went to the "Mayan Rivera" area for vacation and R&R. It not only turned me on to some great places to drink and eat, but also helped me to find some really cool places to stay without wasting time and money learning where not to stay. I was especially glad to learn in advance about the customs and expectations when it comes to transportation and the the pitfalls one might suffer when unaware. Great Video and Vacation planning tool. Definitely Thumbs UP !!!

5 out of 5 stars Must have For First-Timers!.......2006-11-13

Having vacationed in Akumal for the past eleven years I was so impressed by the way the makers of this DVD hit the nail on the head! Though it has grown in tourism over the years, Akumal is still a place you can have a laid back and even primitive vacation if you know the right tips! These guys have definitely spent some time down there!

5 out of 5 stars Veteran Mayan Coast Traveler.......2006-11-09

I have been to the Yucatan coast numerous times and have taken many friends during that time, I have to say that Akumal is one of our favorite spots! It is truly a gem on a coast dominated by heavy tourism and big Americanized resorts. I only wish I would have had this DVD ten years ago, as many of their "trip tips" for travelers in Mexico I learned the hard way. VERY HELPFUL! The footage is great, it is such a beautiful area and the dvd depicts it wonderfully. With this dvd you know exactly what you are getting and exactly what to do when you plan a trip to Akumal, like a personal tour guide! Loved it!

1 out of 5 stars Would give no star if possible.......2006-09-26

Very poor footage, you will hardly see any natural view of this beautiful region. It's all about U.S. tourists looking for all the facilities they're used to, shops selling U.S. junk food ... They always show you tourists drinking, eating, sailing, riding ...
Where is the "paradise", the "best kept secret" in all that?
Mexico is not that, Yucatan is not that!
