Released in 1943 by the low-budget outfit Producers Releasing Corporation, The Black Raven offers what amounts to a watered-down "old dark house" mystery. George Zucco is in top form as Amos Bradford, the criminal owner of the Black Raven Inn. When a nearby bridge is washed out in a raging storm, the usual assortment of characters is forced to spend the night at the Black Raven. Not surprisingly, murder and mystery soon follow.

This is a wonderful movie certainly not the best that i have ever watched but it was much better then expected and overall entertaining. It is certainly worth watching and Venessa does a very fine acting job in this. I would grade it a A- Worth buying

This Movie Doesn't Keep It Real.......2006-06-29

I saw this on TV last month and I thought it was lame. Everyone in the movie was goodlooking and the time period portrayed was romanticized big time. Keep it real. That wasn't how it truely was back in the day.

Courage to Love worth watching.......2005-07-13

Courage to love provides a fascinating insight to a little known period in Louisiana's history. A period when free women of colour were groomed by their mothers for the sole purpose of finding a rich man to take care of them- though due to Louisiana law, were unable to marry. Venessa Williams gives a good performance as a "gens de colour." I highly recommend.

very attractive and talented Creole woman named Henriette Delille, who chose the rigors of convent life over a very comfortable placage with a wealthy white benefactor who could gave her the world if she wants it. She saw the evil in placage and didn't want any part of it because it would be against God's law against living in sin. She seen it firsthand with her parents. Her father wanted out of it so he could marry a white woman in order to have legitimate offspring while her mother slowly goes insane not only of her lover's abandonment but also of her daughter's refusal to follow her footsteps in taking a white lover without being married.

All her life, Henriette deLille devoted her life to helping the poor and enslaved of Louisiana, even going against the authorities to do so. It's not an easy life to live but it's a purposeful one. One that emphasize a life of service and devotion to spiritual matters.

Vanessa L. Williams has done a great job in portraying Henriette Delille.

Black Cobra will not disappoint!!!.......2005-01-17

This movie is awesome! I got it at the drug store down the road for 4.99! (An awesome deal) I liked it so much I decided to Google it and ended up here. If you like really cool "B" Italian action movies, likable good guys, and "hardcore" bad guys than Black Cobra is a must own. The story is great! Detective Malone (Fred Williamson) must protect a female fashion photographer from the ruthless Black Cobra biker gang and their indestructible leader Snake (Karl Landgren), after she sees them kill her neighbor. This results in a lot of cool action including various show downs with the Malone and the Cobras in different settings. Add cool poppy 80's music, "Dad this is the A-HA!!" and a cool funny ladies man side kick for Malone, and you get a one really enjoyable action movie. The climaxes are great too, especially when Malone and his buddy have to rescue the chief's daughter from the Cobras in the abandoned parking lot. Oh and the closing theme song is rrrrrreally cool. Happy Happy Italian 80's pop rock! "Take me to Ameeeerica!" I give this the highest rating I possible can!
And I'm not the only one who enjoyed this movie they're 2 more Black Cobra movies (AKA Cobra Nero 1-3). I got the Legacy entertainment version DVD. It preserved the original film and sound quality which is a big plus, and had nice menu music. On a technical note, the volume was a little separate, but if you turn your TV up its fine, it's not too loud and you can hear everything.
Legacy is great, it get all my kung fu, and action pics from them. If you looking for cool Bruce Lee clone movies Legacy is great. And Black Cobra maybe the best DVD I have from Legacy.

All three Black Cobra flicks are fun vehicles for Fred "The Hammer" Williamson fans who dig this sort of thing. JUST ANOTHER ACTION FLICK; 2.5 STARS.......2004-09-11

A COP [FRED WILLIAMSON] IS HIRED TO PROTECT A YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER FROM A VERY MURDEROUS MOTORCYCLE GANG. THIS POORLY FILMED ACTIONER IS YOUR USUAL ACTION FLICK. BUT, IT IS OCCASIONALLY FUN TO WATCH. AT LEAST THERE IS SOME GOOD ACTION AND THERE IS SOME COOL VILLAINS. THOUGH THIS IS QUITE FAR FROM BEING A GOOD MOVIE, IT'S MUCH BETTER THAN ONE WOULD MOST LIKELY EXPECT. FANS OF FRED WILLIAMSON WILL MOST LIKELY ENJOY THIS. IF THIS FILM ONLY HAD A BETTER SCRIPT AND SOME BETTER ACTING, THIS MIGHT'VE BEEN A MUCH BETTER MOVIE. SHOCKINGLY, THIS MANAGED TO SPAWN TWO SEQUELS.

I find it funny that the movie sells here for [money], when I can pick it up at Wal-Mart for [money] Canadian here, and it's still not worth it. And judging by the previous review, the DVD quality probably isn't any worse. The picture was extremely dark and grainy, and looked like it was shot in the early 70's rather than the late 80's. The music was of ok quality, but didn't really suit the movie well in my opinion. But then again, I was expecting blaxploitation, which despite the title, really had nothing to do with that genre at all. Plus the voices were of very low volume when compared to the music, so I found myself turning the volume way up to hear the speech, then way down when the music came blaring in all of a sudden. As far as the voices themselves, the lip synching was horrible; I felt as if I was watching an old asian kung-fu flick. I guess if there was any saving grace for this movie, it was just how bad the actual acting and story were; almost laughable, which was what kept me from giving this movie a 1. I'm a big fan of B-movies, so I can forgive alot the predicable and often retarded things I saw in Black Cobra. But the DVD quality alone is enough for me to not recommend this movie. Plus Black Cobra is ... whipped, the Zombies biker gang are laughably un-tough, and you only get to see one boob.

Well the first things first, this DVD wouldnt play on my dvd player. Second, when i got it to play on my computer the sound quiality was so terrible that I had to turn it off. The was something that made the DVD have extreemly distorted sound. Also this movie looks like it was made in the 70's as a rip off of shaft.

BLACK RAVEN IS A TEXTBOOK EXAMPLE OF A POVERTY ROW OLD DARK HOUSE MURDER MYSTERY. STORMY NIGHT, WASHED-OUT BRIDGE, WEIRD ASSORTMENT OF ODDBALL CHARACTERS WITH SHADY PASTS, SPOOKY WAYSIDE INN, SECRETS TO HIDE, AND THEN THE MURDERS BEGIN...EVERYONE IS A POTENTIAL SUSPECT OR VICTIM.
GEORGE ZUCCO IS A MASTER AT THIS KIND OF STUFF & IS GREAT TO WATCH AS ALWAYS, SECOND ONLY TO LUGOSI FOR SHEER ENTERTAINMENT VALUE IN THE LAND OF PRC/MONOGRAM. A MUST HAVE FOR FANS OF THE GENRE!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

THE ALPHA DVD VERSION COMES FROM NOT THE GREATEST SOURCE MATERIAL. THE PRINT IS RATHER DARK MAKING IT HARD TO SEE WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING ON IN SOME SCENES & THAT'S WHY I KNOCK OFF A STAR IN THE OVERALL RATING OF WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE A MUST FOR ZUCCO FANS.

It was a very dark and stormy night.......2003-02-02

I'm a fan of George Zucco, but I found this movie exceedingly tedious. For one thing, I couldn't see what was going on half of the time; a significant part of the action takes place either in darkened rooms or outside in the pitch black rainy night. This also contributes to a problem I had of keeping a couple of characters straight, especially the criminal types who spend most of their time hiding or stomping around huddled in rain gear. There was also very little character development-we just get one-shot glances at some of the individuals, and this lack of depth gave me little with which to distinguish some of them in my mind. One guy's a criminal who has broken out of jail in order to get revenge on Zucco's character "the Raven," (whose shadiness of character is never quite clear, particularly in terms of the past and the present). Another guy is apparently on the run after having been sold out by his own crooked boss. Then you have the stereotypical little guy who is sick of being treated like the cowardly runt he is and has embezzled fifty thousand dollars. The only half way normal people we meet are a man and woman whose plan of eloping to Canada has been delayed by the storm outside. Her father, some kind of criminally inclined businessman himself, tracks his daughter to the Raven's hotel, thus setting the stage for the night's drama. He is murdered, the embezzled money disappears, and the incompetent sheriff doesn't have the time or desire to actually investigate a crime, especially since it's so much easier to just pick somebody out and pin everything on him. The plethora of killings that follow each of his arrests greatly annoys him. The second half of the film basically consists of different people, often unidentifiable to me because of the darkness on screen, running around the house hiding from, ridiculing, and basically annoying each other. Perhaps if I had been able to actually see what was going on, I would have enjoyed this movie. Even George Zucco didn't seem to have his heart in this film. His cinematic get-togethers of either invited or unplanned guests are usually interesting, but this is an exception.

Dark Stormy Night.......2002-12-05

George Zucco plays Bradford the owner of a country inn and Glen Strange playing as a bumbling oaf. On a stormy night "The Black Raven" is visited by a convict with a grudge against Bradford, a bank teller who has stolen $50k, and a couple that are eloping.

The atmosphere is excellent i.e., an old dark house on a stormy night!

Glen Strange is the one that played Frankenstein the last three "Frankenstein" movies House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula, Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, and of course he played Sam on Gunsmoke.

Better than average offering from PRC..........2002-11-05

The 1943 PRC effort "The Black Raven" is an interesting mix of "old dark house" stories and a slight dash of film noir.

George Zucco is great as Amos Bradford, the owner of The Black Raven Inn, a stopover on the edge of the Canadian border. Bradford is also known to the underworld as a contact man who can help crooks escape across the border to safety. Add a thunderstorm, several crooks, a pair of young lovers, a timid banker, and a bumbling handyman to the mix, and the stage is set for murder, mystery, and mayhem.

Serial fans will want to keep and eye out for the Sheriff, played by Charles Middleton. Middleton is probably best known to fans as Ming the Merciless in the Flash Gordon serials.
