Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
One of the first of the big disaster films, this stodgy Hollywood product lumbers and creaks as it tries to sort out the various plot threads of Arthur Hailey's doorstop of a novel. Set at (what else?) a busy metropolitan airport, it details what happens one eventful night when, among other things, a huge blizzard threatens to disrupt air traffic for the airport manager (Burt Lancaster) even as a suicidal bomber (Van Heflin) heads into the air with mayhem on his mind. There's also an impish old lady (Helen Hayes, who won an Oscar for this role) who specializes in sneaking aboard airliners, and the married pilot (Dean Martin) is having an affair with a stewardess (Jacqueline Bisset). An old-fashioned movie that inspired a bunch of sequels, the Airplane spoofs, and a host of other disaster films. --Marshall Fine

Amazon.com essential video
The quintessential movie spoof that spawned an entire genre of parody films, the original Airplane! still holds up as one of the brightest comedic gems of the '80s, not to mention of cinema itself (it ranked in the top 5 of Entertainment Weekly's list of the 100 funniest movies ever made). The humor may be low and obvious at times, but the jokes keep coming at a rapid-fire clip and its targets--primarily the lesser lights of '70s cinema, from disco films to star-studded disaster epics--are more than worthy for send-up. If you've seen even one of the overblown Airport movies then you know the plot: the crew of a filled-to-capacity jetliner is wiped out and it's up to a plucky stewardess and a shell-shocked fighter pilot to land the plane. Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty are the heroes who have a history that includes a meet-cute à la Saturday Night Fever, a surf scene right out of From Here to Eternity, a Peace Corps trip to Africa to teach the natives the benefits of Tupperware and basketball, a war-ravaged recovery room with a G.I. who thinks he's Ethel Merman (a hilarious cameo)--and those are just the flashbacks! The jokes gleefully skirt the boundaries of bad taste (pilot Peter Graves to a juvenile cockpit visitor: "Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked?"), with the high (low?) point being Hagerty's intimate involvement with the blow-up automatic pilot doll, but they'll have you rolling on the floor. The film launched the careers of collaborators Jim Abrahams (Big Business), David Zucker (Ruthless People), and Jerry Zucker (Ghost), as well as revitalized such B-movie actors as Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Robert Stack, and Leslie Nielsen, who built a second career on films like this. A vital part of any video collection. --Mark Englehart
Product Description
The persons and events in this film are fictitious - fortunately! A masterpiece of off-the-wall comedy, Airplane! features Robert Hays as an ex-fighter pilot forced to take over the controls of an airliner when the flight crew succumbs to food poisoning; Julie Hagerty as his girlfriend/stewardess/co-pilot; and a cast of all-stars including Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Leslie Nielsen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar... and more. Their hilarious high jinks spoof airplane disaster flicks, religious zealots, television commercials, romantic love... the list whirls by in rapid succession. And the story races from one moment of zany fun to the next.
Customer Reviews:
Great Classic Movie :-).......2007-06-28
I first saw Airplane on TV and thought it was great, than I picked up the DVD a little later and really loved it when all of the stuff was uncensored! Leslie Neilson is totally awesome in this and with the updated Shirley Edition and the extra's that come along with it, this DVD has become a must buy :)
"HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A GROWN MAN NAKED?".......2007-06-19
The grown man naked line has got to be the funniest line ever said in a movie. This comic gem is a parody of the disaster movies of the 70's and never stops with the gags. The main plot is about a war vet who is afraid to fly, and he is chasing after his ex-girlfriend. After the crew gets food poisoning, he is forced to fly the plain. This is the "holy grail of spoof movies!!! Fans of goofy, slapstick, parody-type comedies must see this movie. NOT TO BE MISSED!!!!
The Most Serious Movie I Have Ever Seen........2007-05-19
This movie grabs you. It holds you in. It has so emotion and so much sadness. It makes you think about heaven, hell, the meaning of life, and everybody in between. This movie made me cry. It is so gruesome, so heart-wrenching, so hard to watch. This movie makes you forget everything. It touched me. This movie has changed my life!
I hope you can tell that I am joking. This movie is the complete opposite. If you think this movie is serious, you must think Schindler's List is comedy gold. Actually, I should have used this review on Schindler's List.
Anyway, this movie is really funny. There are some misses, but there are triple the hits.
Perfect antidote for our "United 93" world!.......2007-04-03
I had seen "Airplane!" when it first came out and when I saw it on DVD knew I had to grab a copy. After 9/11 and the tightening of airport and airline security it was nice to see a funny, lighter film aboard an airplane and it's perfect antidote to the "United 93" world we presently live in. It's funny to think of food being the source of terror as opposed to the other disaster movies of the time where the plane itself was the danger ("Airport," "Airport 75," etc.). That alone was so funny...when was the last time you had a meal served on an airplane?
Daresay we could use a film that pokes fun at the current situation with security although I don't know how many people would find that funny. Serious times tend to produce serious films (witness "United 93") and I don't know how well comedies like "Airplane" would do today.
In a lot of respects "Airplane!" is a time capsule that evoked laughs for me too. I chuckled at how lax the security was in the film compared to today's super-tight security...remember curbside parking? Being able to meet people at the gates? Of course it was funny to see people being able to smoke in airports and on planes (no love lost there). Sure, some of the gags are getting a bit dated (not sure how many kids today will know who Ethel Merman is), but some of them are still just as funny. Overall the satire has held up pretty darned good as have most of the jokes. And please, don't call me Shirley!
Great Movie!.......2007-04-02
I purchased this movie for my husband for his birthday, and we absolutely love it! Very funny and entertaining. It's definitely a classic that you can watch over and over again.

The title of The Castle refers to a ramshackle suburban tract house so close to an airport that planes fly mere yards above the roof. Worse than that, it's built on a toxic landfill and right beside humming high-power lines. But to patriarch Darryl Kerrigan (Michael Caton) and his dim-witted but cheerful brood it's home. Darryl has devoted himself to constantly improving it with modifications like a false chimney that, as he brags to a man sent to estimate the value of the property, makes the house look more picturesque. When the owners of the airport serve Darryl notice that his home is being compulsorily purchased, Darryl hires a small-time lawyer and pursues his case all the way to the Australian Supreme Court. This Australian box-office smash wasn't as successful as The Full Monty in American theaters, but it has something of the same buoyant spirit. The Castle actually plays better on the small screen; its relationship with its characters is much like the farcical intimacy of classic British sitcoms like Fawlty Towers, in which crazed behavior is balanced by the genuine warmth of the whole cast. Caton in particular is a sweet, engaging presence; Darryl Kerrigan is a fool, but a fool with dignity, and he carries you through the movie. --Bret Fetzer
Description
In the laugh-filled tradition of THE FULL MONTY, THE CASTLE is a hilarious comedy treat critics hailed as one of the year's funniest movies! Even though there's an airport practically running through their backyard, the eccentric Kerrigan clan loves their humble home. But when the airfield needs room to expand, the government says that the Kerrigans have to go! With an irresistable charm and irrepressible humor everyone is sure to enjoy, the hilarity then really takes flight when this funny family decides to stay and fight for their beloved "castle" ... no matter how far the conflict goes!
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational Comedy.......2007-06-18
The Castle is NOT a cocodile dundee type comedy.
It is typical of other "serious" Australian films being producined at that time, with idealist themes.
The theme of The Castle is "money can't buy happiness", however, comedy is cleverly used to subdue this unrealistic theme until the end of the movie.
It was hard to accept that the Kerrigan's could be happy, and I was cringing at the stupidity of the characters throughout the film... but I slowly began to urge them on, and by the end of the film I felt like I could be have been one of them.
The only thing that I could not accept was that tow-truck drivers are not as friendly as Darryl Kerrigan, and this profession did not suit his character.
Awesome Aussie film.......2007-02-21
Having never seen the original Aussie version, I don't know what I'm missing and can enjoy this American version. One of those movies that gets funnier with each veiwing. Several lines have been permemantly established in our family vernacular. When the kids want to know what I put in their dinner, I reply, "saysning." A must see!!!
Great Comedy Movie!.......2007-01-12
This is a painfully funny movie, a pioneer in the latest genre of "docu-comedy". Similar humor to The Office. Characters are so well developed and portrayed you forget this is fiction. A sure hit for anyone who will give it a try.
A great laugh.......2006-10-12
Without a doubt this is the funniest Australian movie of all time. I have watched it so many times I almost know it off by heart. This launched the film careers of Eric Bana and Stephen Curry and made Michael Caton a household name. I dont know anyone who doesn't like this movie so if you want to familiarise yourself with some Aussie humour, make sure you add this one to your collection. It is not a movie you can watch just once, you will want to watch it again and again. Sadly no special features however, that is why the no 5th star.
Get the Australian region 4 version if you can. I believe a lot of the original dialogue has been hacked and changed to suit American audiences. You will be missing what makes the movie so great.
If you're a fan get the Aussie edition!!!!.......2006-08-27
I love this movie and I can't really add anything else to the reviews already posted. But I will say if you love this movie get the Region 4 version from Australia. Yes you will need a region-free DVD player but it is well worth it. I found one for $35 that I can honestly say is one of the best pieces of electronic equipment I have ever owned. I can watch any movie I want without the powers that be telling me what I can and cannnot watch based on my geography. The previous poster is incorrect. There are scenes that have chopped. Part of one can be seen in the trailer. Nothing was taken out that will muddy the plot. But I have to ask Miramax, why, at a short 90 minutes, would you bother taking out more of the fun? And I truly have a dislike for the voiceovers done to change Aussie references to American. Don't underestimate the viewing audience Miramax! If we are going to watch this movie, most of us will look up any words or phrases we aren't familiar with. Thats part of the fun.
There are 2 versions of this film available in Oz. There's the standard version and The Pool Room Edition. It comes complete with a fuzzy slipcover to imitate a pool table, a lovely keep case with pictures of the cast, sheet music to "We're Goin' To Bonnydoon", and a top 10 list of the Kerrigans best deals from the trading post. Ahhhh, the serenity!

This movie follows the unwritten law of sequels: bring back the same characters and put them in similar jeopardy with slightly tweaked circumstances. Instead of a cross-country journey, this time the pet trio must get from the San Francisco airport across the Golden Gate Bridge to their suburban home. Michael J. Fox and Sally Field return as the voices of Chance the bulldog and Sassy the cat, with Ralph Waite replacing the late Don Ameche as the elderly golden retriever. Their journey features dogfights, house fires, an epic battle with a pair of petnappers, and a love affair for Chance with a stray from the other side of the bridge (Carla Gugino). Sinbad voices another dog who guides them through the mean streets of the city by the bay, and Robert Hays stars as the father, but, frankly, that hardly matters. What does is the animals' banter, and they're funny. (Ages 3 and up) --Kimberly Heinrichs
Description
Your favorite trio of talking animals is back in this action-packed Disney adventure that'll have the whole family bursting with excitement and laughter! Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, and Ralph Waite supply the voices of Chance, the American bulldog; Sassy, the Himalayan cat; and Shadow, the golden retriever -- and Sinbad speaks for their newfound canine friend, Riley -- in this critically acclaimed sequel to Disney's now-classic HOMEWARD BOUND: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY. When the pets accidentally get separated from their vacationing owners, Chance, Shadow, and Sassy navigate the mean streets of San Francisco, trying to find their home across the Golden Gate Bridge. But the road is blocked by a series of hazards, both man and beast. It's another incredible journey for three very brave, very lovable pets, in a thrilling, funny adventure that's 'bound to please' (New York Post) the entire family!

Homeward Bound 11-Lost in San Francisco.......2007-01-16
This was a truly a very wonderful movie. It picks where the first one left off. I would say that this another one that is entertaining to all. Thank you to Disney studios for this one and The Incredible Journey.
Homeward Bound II - Lost In San Francisco.......2007-01-09
My daughters love this movie. They are 4 and 6. It is very age approriate, clean and fun!
Homeward Bound II - Lost in San Francisco.......2007-01-04
This is a very enjoyable movie, appropriate for all ages. It is also very funny at times. It tells good lessons for everyone to learn.
GREAT family movies.......2007-01-02
This movie is great ALL my kids loved it from ages 9-16 and even us parents enjoyed it alot. SUPER FUNNY and heartwarming.
Those Lovable Critters are Back!.......2006-07-03
This movie is the third movie that Disney has made using the same theme. The first was 1963's "The Incredible Journey." The second was essentially a remake of the first, "Homeward Bound." In the remake the animals talked rather than having a narration. This movie capitalizes on the success of the original with a variation on the theme of the original.
This time our three friends, Shadow, a golden retriever, Sassy, a Himalayan cat, and Chance, an American bulldog escape from their cages at San Francisco International Airport, thinking they are going to "the bad place," though they are actually heading for a vacation. Once their family arrives at their destination, they learn the animals have escaped and arrange to return home to find them. We see very little of the family after that except to see their concern and a few moments at the end of the movie.
The focus is on the antics of the three critters. Chance, voiced by Ralph Waite, is always focused on getting home and being safe. Sassy, voiced by Sally Field, is aloof and sarcastic, taking every advantage of spitting out a one-liner about any particular situation, most especially anything involving Chance. Chance, voiced by Michael J. Fox, is the oblivious goofball who attempts to interpret everything he sees in his own bizarre, usually wrong, way. Chance makes a perfect target for Sassy's barbed comments.
We follow the three animals, who really are friends, as they journey through San Francisco, trying to locate the Golden Gate Bridge and the way home. Along the way they encounter dog thieves looking for laboratory dogs, a fire, mean dogs and friendly dogs who do not understand how these three could want to go back to humans because of the experiences these strays have had with humans.
This story has everything you could want in an adventure story about dogs. There is love, humor, and a happy, nearly hilarious ending. While this story is not quite up to par with the original or the remake, it is readily worth watching with the kids more than once, especially if you are looking for an easy laugh. Even the youngest children in the family will enjoy this one, especially after the brief moments when things look dark for the animals. Just be prepared to say no when your little ones ask for a puppy or a kitten. Enjoy!

This somewhat unpleasant 1992 sequel to the blockbuster Home Alone revisits the first film's gimmick by stranding Macaulay Culkin's character in New York City while his family ends up somewhere else. Again, the little guy meets up with colorful people on the margins of society (including a pigeon woman played by Brenda Fricker) and again he gets into a prop-heavy battle with Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. The latter sequence is even worse than the first film in terms of violence inflicted on the two villains (director Chris Columbus, who also made the first film, can't seem to emphasize the slapstick over the graphic effects of the fight). The best running joke finds a concierge (Tim Curry) at the swank hotel where Culkin is staying trying and failing to prove that the boy is on his own. --Tom Keogh
Description
Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is back! But this time he's in New York City with enough cash and credit cards to turn the Big Apple into his own playground! But Kevin won't be alone for long. The notorious Wet Bandits, Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), still smarting from their last encounter with Kevin, are bound for New York too, plotting a huge holiday heist. Kevin's ready to welcome them with a battery of booby traps the bumbling bandits will never forget!

I cant really decide which one I like better this or Home Alone 1. They are both awesome. My 6 year old and 3 year old absolutely love this one and watch it everyday! Sometimes we even spot "Harry and Marv in thier van" when we are out and about. A really fun movie, I highly recommend getting it.

Would you like fish or meat?.......2007-05-29
Zero Hour! was the basis for the comedy favorite Airplane!, which is the reason why it is considered a cult classic. In fact, many of the lines and scenerios from Airplane! are lifted straight from this movie. Zero Hour! is the story of an ex-fighter pilot Ted Stryker (Dana Andrews) who finds himself chasing his discontented wife (Linda Darnell) and child Joey (Raymond Ferrell) onto a commercial airplane. Once on the plane, he discovers that there are worse problems than just his failing marriage. There is a problem with the fish (thankfully, he chose meat) and the passengers are falling ill rather rapidly. It soon becomes a matter of seriousness when both pilots take ill and Ted is the only one with any flying experience.
The problem with this movie is the fact that it is supposed to be serious. There are so many ludicrous things in it that it is impossible to take seriously, but since it was not supposed to be funny, there are many long stretches where an audience can find itself bored. One of the best examples of this is the long "suspenseful" ending. Still, it is worth watching at least once for fans of Airplane!, just don't expect it to become your favorite.
If you liked "Airplane!" you must own this film!.......2007-05-19
I caught some of this movie on Turner Classic Movies one evening, during a day of tributes to movies and their remakes. This film was the inspiration (and the source for many lines) for the 1980 comedy spoof "Airplane!". Just like "Airplane!" "Zero Hour" is about a former war pilot who is forced to take over an airliner when half the passengers get sick from eating bad fish! (Yes, the choice for dinner was 'chicken or fish' just like "Airplane!"). My wife and I were practically in tears, because so many classic lines from "Airplane!" were lifted directly from this film, only the punchlines never came, which somehow made it funnier.
I'll be pre-ordering this one for purchase when it comes out!

John Wayne personally produced many of his '50s films, which is why some of them have languished in corporate limbo following his death. The High and the Mighty was one of his most popular vehicles (no pun intended). This long, necessarily sedentary drama aboard an endangered airliner is a CinemaScope bridge between 1932's Grand Hotel and 1970s disaster movies. Despite Wayne's iconic presence as a pilot--now copilot--who survived the plane crash that wiped out his family, it's an ensemble movie with an impressive cast: Robert Stack sharing the cockpit, Oscar® nominees Claire Trevor and Jan Sterling, Laraine Day, Robert Newton, Paul Kelly, John Qualen, Regis Toomey, the ubiquitous Paul Fix, and director William A. Wellman's good-luck character actor Douglas Fowley. Dimitri Tiomkin's score won the Oscar, though the fondly remembered theme song isn't as prominent as you'd expect. Wings veteran William H. Clothier shot the aerial footage. --Richard T. Jameson
Customer Reviews:
A CLASSIC FOR ALL TIME.......2007-05-31
one of the great motion pictures of all time. so long in limbo and now to see it in the stores and on tv is very rewarding. i remember this when it was on tv in the early sixies in texas. wonderful memories, it is so wonderful to see it in its rightful place. dont listen to the idiotic remarks about it being dated....how assinine of course ...its a movie when the world was a better place...and more trust in the world. so ignore the ignorance. a truly wonderful movie in a wonderful time, beautiful to look at and perfectly done for its time....there was and never will be another JOHN WAYNE a true AMERICAN .. we need more of him. an all time marvelous movie. A 1.
wellman & wayne fly high.......2007-05-12
an all around great movie, with john wayne understated as the vet pilot who keeps his head while others are losing theirs. if youre a fan of "airport" movies, (or more likely "airplane") this long unseen film is a must-see for you. all the cliches start here, from the long character list to the white knuckle action to robert stack! director william wellman manned yet another aviation pic, with wonderful performances from claire trevor (waynes "stagecoach" co star!), jan sterling, robert newton, phil harris, &c. and dont forget that great theme music. also, its a birds eye view into what air travel was like in the pre-jet era. tho "dated", this is a wonderful movie, and well worth your time.
The High and the Mighty.......2007-05-07
Although this is drama 50s style, I found the movie hysterical and when John Wayne does a John Wayne I cheer. I love this movie for its unintentual humor. Still great acting.
I was slightly disappointed.......2007-04-12
If for anything, The High and the Mighty can be used as an example as to why John Wayne was a true "superstar."
This film has some impressive cinematography, and several very suspenseful scenes, but in all honesty, it's really a melodramatic, 50s style soap-opera that wasn't very well written or well acted by the cast.
There are, however, two things that really lift this film out of mediocre territory.
The beautiful and haunting score, and the electrifying presence of John Wayne. The Duke dominates every scene he is in, and he's the main reason modern viewers keep watching this very dated film. When the movie is over, the viewer doesn't want to say it was average because of the efforts and accomplishments of Wayne. This may have been a "big and adventurous" film back in it's day, but in the year of 2007, it's entertainment value comes strictly from it's "big and adventurous" lead star. Not very many stars can carry a film like Wayne, and he really shines in this one.
Great movie!!!.......2007-02-14
This is a good movie. I've never seen it all the way through before I bought the DVD (TCM and ACM has aired it) and I liked it.

The 1982 sequel to Airplane! is basically more of the same class-clown ironies but with a more forced feeling to the jokes. In the first film, veterans such as Peter Graves, Robert Stack, and Lloyd Bridges were feeling their way through self-parody, and the air of experimentation was part of the fun. By this film, however, everybody knows what's up, and the assuredness of new cast members Raymond Burr, William Shatner, and Chuck Connors is almost counterproductive. Still, there's lots to laugh about. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Good Movie - Funny Jokes - Something Missing ???.......2007-06-28
I loved the first Airplane! and this was pretty good too :) But something was missing from this to take it to the top of my movie list. Maybe Leslie Neilsen not being in the cast had something to do with it but overall this movie is a great Saturday night treat :)
A lot of the jokes are funny and I love the physical and visual gags that they do just like in the original.
Overall I'd say rent it, buy it cheap, or watch it on TV. If you liked the first you'll probably like this one too, but as with my suggestion when watching Monty Python's Holy Grail, you might want to be high when you watch it
Not a bad sequel, but Shatner scenes overrated.......2007-01-22
Of course, "Airplane 2" isn't quite as good as the first film, but it's still amusing, and short. I think its running time is less than 90 minutes. My favorite character in the movie is Chad Everett playing that stereo-typical disaster movie character, the guy who "cut corners" and caused the mishap. He said something like, "Striker, they made me cut corners on those designs." And Striker punches him. Earlier in the movie he says something like, "Striker, I'd watch my step if I were you." Then he finally turns to jelly...literally.
And the only thing I didn't like about this film is William Shatner. Everybody seems to love him in this film, but I've never found Shatner funny when he tries to do this kind of comedy. His humor always seemed forced and overdone. Comedy doesn't flow out of him smoothly and naturally like it does out of say, Leslie Nielsen. Now there's a funny guy. Lloyd Bridges was way funnier than Shatner, too. I love Shatner as Kirk, but in comedic roles, no.
funny movie.......2007-01-19
another good movie, you can watch this many times without getting tired of it. Lots of jokes, play on words.
Airplane2.......2007-01-11
Very dissapointed, but then sequels are very seldom better than the origional. I can highly recommend the origional, one of the funniest flying movies ever
Ron Nash
Airplane 2.......2006-08-28
You'll laugh your [...] off. It sends up the 60s, the 70s, the 80s (which were just beginning), pop culture, sci-fi, sequels, and its predecessor. I thought it was funnier than the original. Some people didn't. It's not important. It's hilarious. That's important. It's a keeper, same as the first movie. You know you'll watch it over and over again and find things you missed before.

Like an airport running at peak efficiency, The Terminal glides on the consummate skills of its director and star. Having refined their collaborative chemistry on Saving Private Ryan and Catch Me if You Can, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks mesh like the precision gears of a Rolex, turning a delicate, not-very-plausible scenario into a lovely modern-age fable (partly based on fact) that's both technically impressive and subtly moving. It's Spielberg in Capra mode, spinning the featherweight tale of Victor Navorski (Hanks, giving a finely tuned performance), an Eastern European who arrives at New York's Kennedy Airport just as his (fictional) homeland has fallen to a coup, forcing him, with no valid citizenship, to take indefinite residence in the airport's expansive International Arrivals Terminal (an astonishing full-scale set that inspires Spielberg's most elegant visual strategies). Spielberg said he made this film in part to alleviate the anguish of wartime America, and his master's touch works wonders on the occasionally mushy material; even Stanley Tucci's officious terminal director and Catherine Zeta-Jones's mixed-up flight attendant come off (respectively) as forgivable and effortlessly charming. With this much talent involved, The Terminal transcends its minor shortcomings to achieve a rare degree of cinematic grace. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Cute without being sappy.......2007-06-29
A very nice film. Very nice. Is it a great film? Perhaps not, but it's a remarkably well-produced film, and well-acted. It is done well enough for people to ignore a plotline which stretches credulity at more than a few points. Even though viewers will have a reasonably good idea that things will work out OK, the film keeps us engaged by moving along at a brisk pace, never bogging down with exceptional sentiment. The coda --- a tribute to a son's promise to his father --- is definitely the best part of the movie by far, the most touching, and helps to redeem some of the weaker moments which preceded it. Overall, very satisfying. Did I mention that it was very nice?
Good Flick.......2007-06-25
Speilberg is not capable of making a bad movie. It's just not in the realm of this Universe' possibilities. Tom Hanks does a great job of playing a sympathetic foreigner who turns out to be a hero. Catherine Zeta Jones breaks his heart ofcourse but in the end her character is just in it for the cash like most of the rest of us. There's also a jazz theme to the flick which tells me Speilberg is a jazz fan. An even better but underated Speilberg flick is A.I.. This flick is not quite up to that standard but still worth a few viewings especially if you strongly relate to underdogs.
Enjoyable and Uplifting Fantasy.......2007-04-22
I did not want to watch this movie first - I don't like the claustrophobic movies where the fun has been made of the characters who are awkward foreigners that can not speak English. Spielberg's "The Terminal" has got it all but I've came to like it. Technically, it is great - the work of Spielberg's set decorators' and cinematographer's is superb. After a few obligatory jokes based on the main character's total puzzlement and confusion regarding what is happening to him, film starts to look at that man closer and finds a lot in him to admire.
I don't think that making the villain of huge proportions of Stanley Tucci's character was such a great idea. It is not exactly clear why he is determined to make Victor's life even more confusing and miserable with the tenacity deserving better purpose. It was not exactly necessary to make a hero and saint of Hanks' character, either.
With all the negatives, "The Terminal" for me is an enjoyable and uplifting fantasy - sentimental, of course and not perfect but fine and enjoyable. The most important for me was the part when we finally find out why Victor Navarsky (Tom Hanks), the citizen of the fictitious Eastern European Country Krakozia came to New York City, NY, USA. The story behind his arrival is simple, sweet, and touching.
3.5/5
Soundtrack is NOT complete........2007-04-08
Loved the movie, could care less about John Williams but the jazz was cool. Got the DVD with the "soundtrack" all Mr. Williams and no jazz. FIY Benny Golson trio. Buy the movie Not the 3 disc set you will be dissapointed. I was.
Surprisingly bad.......2007-03-12
Who thought Catherine Zeta-Jones and Tom Hanks could be in a movie that isn't just bad, but downright awful. Tom Hanks plays an refugee stuck in JFK. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays the flight attendant he has a crush on. Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla. It just doesn't go anywhere, and the acting is terrible to boot. No plot. No storyline. No good characters. No depth or meaning. No reason to see it.

Director Renny Harlin (Cutthroat Island) took the reins of this 1990 sequel, which places Bruce Willis's New York City cop character in harm's way again with a gaggle of terrorists. This time, Willis awaits his wife's arrival at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., when he gets wind of a plot to blow up the facility. Noisy, overbearing, and forgettable, the film has none of the purity of its predecessor's simple story; and it makes a huge miscalculation in allowing a terrible tragedy to occur rather than stretch out the tension. Where Die Hard set new precedents in action movies, Die Hard 2 is just an anything-goes spectacle. --Tom Keogh
Description
Bruce Willis returns as the heroic cop who battles not only terrorists, but also an incompetent airport police chief (Dennis Franz), the hard-headed commander (John Amos) of the Army's anti-terrorist squad and a deadly winter snowstorm. The runways are littered with death and destruction, and McClane is in a race against time. His wife (Bonnie Bedelia) is trapped on one of the planes circling overhead, which is desperately low on fuel. It's all-out war, a heart-stopping, jet-propelled journey filled with excitement and terror. Fasten your seat belts!

An Underrated Triumph.......2007-05-16
`Die Hard 2' is NOT a guilty pleasure but story telling and film making at its very best. I will valiantly defend it as one of the greatest action/terrorist films ever made. It is extremely effective at invoking fear and emotion.
The Plot: For those of you who haven't seen the film, it is a sequel to Bruce Willis' groundbreaking star making film `Die Hard'. Again, away from his home environment LA cop John McClane innocently travels to Washington DC's Dulles Airport (not located in DC but Ashburn VA) to pick up his wife (Bonnie Badelia) again on Christmas. McClane finds himself in the center of WWIII when terrorists seize the entire airport threatening crash every plane unless a South American tyrant is set free. Hindered by incompetent and arrogant police chief Dennis Franz it is up to McClane to literally single handedly stop an army of better armed and better trained terrorists.
Comic relief is heavy from Willis' one liners and Badelia who finds herself stuck on an airplane with William Atherton, the same sleazy reporter she punched out in `Die Hard.'
The film credits a pulp novel by Walter H. Wager `58 Minutes.' Although they have a similar premise they two stories are very different and I do not recommend '58 Minutes' as a book.
What sets `Die Hard 2' apart from other action films are many effective and unique elements.
1. By far the best aspect of the film are the villains headed by William Sadler. While lacking any charisma their lack of emotion I their strong suite they are true soldiers who will sacrifice innocent lives and their own without conscious to complete their mission. They are pure evil, thus we hate them even more.
2. The terrorists are smarter, better armed and better prepared than Willis much like the original `Die Hard'. The terrorists are American x-special forces who look cool in army boots, leather jackets and sporting the latest weapons, Glock pistols and MP5 submachine guns. Our hero is the underdog thus the bigger they come the harder they fall. We admire our hero's accomplishments more because they are so difficult.
3. The terrorists actually commit an act of terrorism. Unlike most films in which the terrorists merely threaten innocent lives, here they actually take them. One of the film's most dramatic scenes is when they crash a British airplane killing hundreds of people.
4. Being a terrorist is not enough to be a villain. Their hostages are mere numbers. We start to hate them very early in the film when they try to kill our hero. Someone we care about.
5. High production quality also helps with excellent photography, set design, and editing.
6. The incompetence and interference of the authorities is also effective in making us admire our hero. He's on his own. Everything the police try to do is either bureaucratic or counter productive. Dennis Franz and Senator Fred Thompson are brilliant as comical bureaucrats. They're real jerks.
We are able to truly hate and fear the terrorists. The danger seems very real.
Even minor things in the script are genius. For example, what appears to be side talk in the beginning turns out to be significant later. In the opening a terrorist's nonchalant remark is that the only problem is a last minute change in personal. Later a SWAT member casually mentions he is new and only here because the regular guy got a an appendicitis. Only later do we realize the significance of these and the replacement is killed because he's the only one not in on the plot.
Brilliant film making.
A fine sequel to the first "Die Hard".......2007-03-01
After "Die Hard" did eighty million in box office (in 1988 dollars) in the U.S. and another fifty some million overseas, it was inevitable that a sequel would be made. The question was whether it would be a good sequel or just lame, as too many of them are. "Die Hard 2: Die Harder" was a very good sequel. It seemed impossible that they could pull off something that would be in any way connected to the first film and yet seem fresh, but they pulled it off. The budget for the film was more than twice the first and the worldwide box office returned twice the revenues of the first (although the U.S. take was only 50% more - in rough numbers).
Here we have the Holly and John story again, but this time the movie opens with her in a plane and John getting his in-laws car towed while picking her up at the airport for Christmas (yes, again) in Washington D. C. (Dulles International). William Sadler plays Col. Stuart, a, well, crazed U.S. soldier who has led his unit to the dark side in order to free a Noriega type (does anyone remember who that was?), General Ramon Esperanza (played with the arrogance and coldness the role needs by Franco Nero - nice to see him again) who is being flown to Washington to be taken into custody.
McClane is stuck at the airport because Holly's plane is running late. He notices something is up and gets into a deadly fight with some of Stuart's guys doing something back there they shouldn't be doing. Of course, McClane takes the heat and the story takes off. We get to see Fred Thompson as the airport manager Trudeau. Dennis Franz as Capt. Carmine Lorenzo is head of airport security and is half out of his mind trying to keep things under control over Christmas and doesn't need what McClane is bringing him. Art Evans does a terrific job with what could have been just a minor role as Leslie Barnes. Barnes knows everything about airport communications and risks a lot trying to get around what the bad guys are doing to the airport.
It is especially comforting when John Amos comes on the screen as leader of the Blue Light counter terrorism team. He takes a liking to McClane and actually helps him deal with Capt. Lorenzo for a bit.
Just as in the first movie, there are a lot of small roles that have a big impact in making the movie what it becomes. The explosions are even bigger in this movie and even more tragic. Well, we enjoy the last one a lot.
Oh, and Richard Thornburg, the TV reporter is back. This time he is coincidentally on the same flight as Holly and is more than put off when he is seated in coach. William Atherton is terrific as this weasel gets on everyone's nerves and finds a way to endanger everyone yet again. We cheer as Holly gives him what for in a very matter of fact way a couple of times in the movie.
We like another TV reporter much better. Sheila McCarthy plays Samantha Coleman who is assigned to work the airport for a busy holiday story. She knows this is a nothing story that gets done every year to supply some footage if it is a slow news day. So, she is looking for a bigger angle. She recognizes first Col. Stuart, who is famous for something, and then McClane from the previous year's dust up at the Nakatomi Tower. She is aggressive in doing her job, but not a complete narcissist as Thornburg is.
Reginald VelJohnson makes a brief appearance to help McClane at one point. We enjoy seeing him on the screen and wish there could have been more for him to do, but he is clear across the country.
If you liked "Die Hard" you will likely enjoy this movie, too.
Die Hard Redux.......2007-02-08
Same movie different locale. Lots of fun with Detective McClain. Loads of action.
Great Sequel!.......2006-12-22
Great movie. Not as great as the first one but how can you beat an original like that.Still holds up good compared to the 1st movie!I still like this one better than the 3rd.
Everyone says this one has so many plot holes, well like the other 2 didn't?Go on the internet movie database and see what I mean.
A movie to watch for its action and special effects.......2006-10-31
+++++
"Oh man I can't...believe this. Another basement. Another elevator. How can the same thing happen to the same guy twice?"
The above is said by New York city cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) at Washington's Dulles International Airport on Christmas Eve.
What exactly is McClane talking about? McClane has gone to this airport to meet is wife (Bonnie Bedelia) who is arriving by plane. As John waits for his wife's plane to arrive, he spots trouble. It turns out that he has sniffed out a terrorist plot headed by a Colonel Stuart (William Sadler). The terrorists take over the airport instrumentation and no incoming planes are allowed to land (including his wife's plane) until a drug lord's plane is allowed to land safely, with no interference from police authorities. All incoming planes have to continuously circle the airport with the threat of running out of fuel and dropping out of the sky. McClane has to figure out a way to prevent this and save his wife and, as well, not let the terrorists get away.
Those who like plenty of action and special effects should enjoy this movie. As with the original blockbuster movie "Die Hard," Bruce Willis does a good job portraying John McClane.
However, those who have seen the original "Die Hard" will probably be disappointed. This sequel is noisy and overbearing. It has none of the purity of its predecessor's simple story. In my opinion "Die Hard" set a new precedent for action movies, but this sequel is simply an anything-goes spectacle with little humor.
I will mention only two big and obvious flaws with this movie. (There are others but they are not so obvious.)
In the above summary, I said the terrorists only take over airport instrumentation, not the airport itself. Thus, communications to the outside world are still open via phone, TV crews, and ground traffic. It would have been simple to alert the regional authorities of the terrorist situation and have them direct all the aircraft circling over Dulles to nearby airports. In other words, none of the incoming planes (including McClane's wife's plane) were really in trouble! This fact removes the tension that is a key element of the entire movie!!
As well, the terrorists in this sequel are definitely not as interesting and menacing as those in the original. Thus, another key element has been removed. In fact, all of the supporting characters are not as interesting as in the original movie.
This movie is based on the novel "58 minutes" by Walter Wager.
Besides this sequel to the original "Die Hard," there is another sequel (so far) called "Die Hard with a Vengeance."
Finally, the DVD itself (the one released in 2005) is perfect in picture and sound quality. There are a few extras.
In conclusion, those who like only action and special effects will enjoy this movie. Others, however, will probably be disappointed!!!
(1990; 2 hr; wide screen; 26 scenes; rated `R')

Description
All-American hero John Wayne takes a crew of construction workers and turns them into one of WWII's toughest fighting forces in this action-packed war classic. But first he has to convince the army brass to let his civilians bear arms, and then he's got to whip them into combat shape. Now Wayne is fighting for his life on a different battlefield when he's brought up on court-martial charges for leading his troops in an all-out assault against the Japanese. It's Wayne at his best, playing the kind of rough-and-tumble man of honor that made him a legend and Hollywood's biggest star. An entertaining combination of strong supporting performances by Daniel O'Keefe and ravishing, about-to-be superstar Susan Hayward.

Three-and-a-half stars for this very fine John Wayne WWII pic, 50th anniversary at that........2006-06-15
John Wayne plays Wedge Donovan (a
character name he would use 19 yrs.,
later in 1963's Donovan's Reef), a
construction Engineering magnate who
ends up selling the US Navy on arming
civilian personnel in hot LZs! He does
get killed in here (like in 'The Cow-
boys' - **.5)but his movie was way bet-
ter! Enough referrences to'japs', 'mon-
kies', et, al and other racial epithe-
ts to turn off the 'politically stupid'
types. Well, that was the terms used at
the times. [to cross referrence, see J.
Garner's fine 'Grand Prix' movie to see
how attitudes changed by 1966!]
wayne shines in this grim war thriller made during the war.......2006-06-06
john wayne and susan hayward star in this great war movie about the seabees, the construction branch of the navy that was set up as world war II started. wayne is the leader of a construction gang sent to build airstrips and other things for the army and navy in the pacific as war starts out. not being soldiers they can't carry guns and must take cover when shooting starts(useing guns would get them shot as spies). well wayne doesn't like to hide so he pushes the navy to arm and train his men so they can build and fight when needed! this is of of his best early war movies and it even has a shocking twist at the end!! a must for wayne fans.
Great Chemistry.......2005-11-20
There is great chemistry between Susan Hayward and John Wayne! Even though he plays someone tough, you can feel the romance growing between John and Susan. Great piece of work!
Navy Heritage - US Navy Seabees.......2004-07-16
This movie has become a part of lore among the men and women of the finest combat contstruction organizations of the US military. It is a nice Hollywood adaptation of the creation of the US Navy Seabees. And who can forget the best character in the movie -- Natasha! It's not often that you see JW's character make the ultimate sacrifice. I watch this and see the beginning of some traditions and attitudes still in practice today. "With Compassion for Others, We Build - We Fight, for Peace with Freedom," from the Seabee Museum. Remember their montra: Seabee Can-Do.
Susan and the Duke........2003-07-03
This is probably only a 2 star movie, but I rounded up because susan Hayward was my fav actress of that era, and JW was my fav actor period.
