The BeeGees consistently awe and amaze me. The performance is incredible. I would highly recommend this dvd. The only disappointing thing is that my favorite BeeGees song (Love You Inside Out) is missing. But the songs that are here are so well done that I don't hesitate to give 5 stars.

A Touching Final Curtain Call for a Great Band.......2007-02-27

It would be but a few years after this triumphant return to live performance that Maurice Gibb would tragically pass under unfortunate circumstances. In the mid to late 90s, the Brothers Gibb were enjoying a much-deserved and much-belated re-evaluation and renaissance of popularity, with the release of the great album Still Water. Not only that, but everything 70s was cool again- disco, bell bottoms, smiley faces- and of course, the "disco" inventors themselves, the swaggering, hairy-chested, big-teethed, gold-medallioned falsetto-singing Bee Gees.

But it is unfortunate that this iconic caricature attached to a popular fad of the era is what the Bee Gees are mostly known for. Because take away this albatross from their necks and what you have are amazing songs, dating back to the late 60s, when their unique take on Beatle-esque harmonics, combined with a talent for melodies of great sensitivity, melancholy, and beauty, as well as their trademark vibrato, created a distinct sound.

The fact remains that the Saturday Night Fever tracks were in the can BEFORE the movie, and were added at the request of boss Stigwood. These were not "disco" songs. They were funky, tropical Arif Mardin-produced Miami rnb/dance and sublime balladry. Granted, they took the disco ball and ran with it- but wouldn't you, given the opportunity? For a while there, the Bee Gees bestrode the pop world like a 3-headed beast. And unlike the Beatles, they outstayed their welcome, oversaturated and thrown into the trash heap of disco hatred, accelerated by the Sgt Pepper film debacle. Forced to retreat, they became in-demand songwriters and producers.

All that musical history is here, as Barry states as the show gets started. They re-trace 30 years of stunning songwriting genius. From the 60s into the early 70s, from the disco era, from the underestimated 80s and 90s tracks, as well as the classics written for others- including an emotional, poignant "duet" with Andy Gibb on Don't Throw It All Away. There is also a nice appearance by a Titanic-peaking Celine Dion, on the underrated gem "Immortality", with the Bee Gees on backing vocals.

With a great backing band, heavenly harmonies, people like Olivia Newton-John in the adoring audience, and the classic self-deprecating Gibb wit, humility and brotherly barbing, you can't lose on this wonderful concert

Over the course of 111 minutes, this straightforward concert, produced at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and groomed for both video and CD posterity, sprints through 31 songs from their past three decades. Even after the inevitable disco jokes are expended, and the jaundiced viewer contemplates the role hats, hairspray, and comb-overs now play in dressing the once stylishly long-haired troika, the Gibb brothers' signature vocal harmonies and hook-laden song craft beg respect. Casual listeners can't be blamed for equating the Bee Gees with the dance floor bonanza they reaped through 1978's Saturday Night Fever, yet that commercial zenith was actually the culmination of a comeback for a group that had seemed washed up by the early '70s. One Night Only thankfully takes an even-handed view of both their original late '60s hits ("Massachusetts," "To Love Somebody," "Lonely Days"), building from a cannily Beatle-browed vocal sound, and the '70s blue-eyed soul ("Jive Talkin'," "Nights on Broadway") that led them naturally into disco. This Is Where I Came In: The Official Story of the Bee Gees
There have been a lot of durable family groups in popular music over the years, but it would be hard to name one that has lasted longer, and succeeded as consistently, as the Bee Gees. Barry Gibb and his younger twin brothers, Robin and Maurice, were making TV and radio appearances in Australia as early as 1960 before returning to their native England and joining the Beatles-led British Invasion, and they're still at it more than 40 years later. All of that is duly chronicled in this two-hour documentary (produced in 2000), along with a great deal more: the personal problems that led to a breakup in the early '70s; the unparalleled success of the Saturday Night Fever era; their occasional missteps and failures (e.g., the abominable Sgt. Pepper movie); the rise and tragic fall of brother Andy; the respect their success finally earned them in the '90s; and so on. The format is pretty standard; interviews, photos, home movies, and concert footage all contribute to a straight, chronological telling of the Bee Gees' tale. But no stone is left unturned, and the Gibb Brothers (not to mention everyone else who's interviewed) have plenty to say. Best of all, there's lots of the Bee Gees' music, including a video of the title track of the 2001 album This Is Where I Came In, after which the film is named. Later that evening they joined forces under the leadership of Gary Moore for a concert that paid tribute to Lynott's memory. The core band of Moore, Jethro Tull bass player Jonathan Noyce and Thin Lizzy's one and only drummer, Brian Downey were joined by the stellar guitar talents of Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham and Eric Bell for a set of Lizzy and Gary Moore classics.

Dolby Digital 5.1 is the best way to hear the concert, even if you collapse it to stereo, as the Dolby 2.0 tracks are marred by matrixed SRS Circle Surround 5.1 encoding. The presence of the SRS processing is confusing, given the superior Dolby-only sound and the broad household penetration of Dolby-based AV receivers. This is an excellent and entertaining DVD. Only people in England know what this is - and it is for charity - with lots of rockers - including Clapton donating their time for a fun night of great music. In Surrey, it is done annual on the estate of a very wealthy man - and the dress is tuxes and gowns - and lots of champagne.

Great music - a show - fun! Definitely worth the price if you like classic rock, new rock and those English rockers!

As I'm a huge fan of EC's I had no doubt of buying this DVD as it shows a not very known side of EC's, with him usual collaboration through Band Du Lac's mates....
Of course the best songs are the ones leaded by...Eric...very good ones are the tracks sang by Paul Carrack....However, The set list could be much better...two famous drummers Ringo Starr and Rogert Taylor should restrict themselves to their initial instrument, not singing...Overall, it is a good DVD, specially for huge fans of EC, like me.
