Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Awesome picture and sound quality!.......2007-06-27

This movie on HD-DVD is outstanding. It's really like seeing it for the first time all over again compared to standard definition. But not just for the incredible picture detail, but equally important is the major improvement in the sound.

I would highly recommend this to anyone that is looking for the current standard in HD-DVD PQ, SQ and it is a good movie also.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing - The Matrix is out of sync.......2007-06-27

I was very disappointed with The Matrix. While the quality of the video transfer is excellent, the audio is slightly out-of-sync, which makes it difficult to watch at times. This is not an issue with either Reloaded or Revolutions.

I don't understand how something like this could have happened. The flagship movie of the three has got serious audio problems. Very disappointing.

I give the whole set a 3, but for The Matrix it deserves much lower than that. It's too bad too, because if The Matrix were in sync, then I'd give the whole set a much better grade.

5 out of 5 stars STUNNING!.......2007-06-26

All I can say is ... it was as good as watching it in the theatre for the first time. Amazing HD conversion ... superior audio quality ... Absolutely stunning!

I should add that I watched all three of these in my xbox 360 HD-DVD (fully patched) and I had ZERO problems with any of these discs. I don't know why these others are having issues.

1 out of 5 stars The Disc that will Undo HD DVD.......2007-06-26

I am SO ANGRY with this release. Not ONE of the HD sides of these movies play in my 360 Add On - all the SD sides play fine ....great. I have both Blu Ray and HD DVD , and from now on I am abandoning HD DVD as a format - Blu Ray deserves to win the war, and I am so sorry to say that as I am NOT a Sony fan boy. SHAME on every company associated with this buggy, defective rubbish release of what should have been HD DVD's finest moment so far. Consider the HD war over - mark my words, in 2 years no one will remember the "HD DVD" format.

4 out of 5 stars The Matrix in HD.......2007-06-15

The pros and cons of the Matrix trilogy have been argued ad nauseum, so I will limit myself to the HD-DVD version.

The transfer to HD of these movies is astounding. The sound is crystal clear and the picture is stunning (in 1080). The reflections caught in Morpheus' sunglasses and the individual clarity of water drops brings these already visually stunning movies to another level.

My nitpick is with certain special effects, notably the bullet-time effect. When transferred to HD the bullet-time effect looks slightly grainy and pixelated compared to the rest of the film.

Nitpicks aside, this is still a very entertaining movie trilogy and the HD experience makes it exponentially better.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate sc-fi adventure for adults in one box set!.......2007-07-04

I'm like the 187th person to review this, but all that can be said incase your completely oblivious to classic movies....THIS IS THE BEST BOX SET THERE IS!!!

1 out of 5 stars QUE PASA CON LA GENTE LATINA????.......2007-06-27

ESTE DVD CONTIENE TODO EL MATERIAL ADICIONAL QUE UNO DESEA PERO LAMENTABLEMENTE LAS PRODUCTORAS SE OLVIDAN O A MI PARECER SIMPLEMENTE NO LES INTERESA EL PUBLICO LATINO Y POR LO TANTO NO HAY SUBTITULOS EN CASTELLANO MAS QUE SIMPLEMENTE EN LAS PELICULAS Y ASI NO ES, NO ME PARECE JUSTO YA QUE NOSOTROS TAMBIEN SOMOS UN GRAN PUBLICO QUE CONSUME ESTOS PRODUCTOS Y POR CONSIGUIENTE NO APOYAMOS A LA PIRATERIA.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection for what you are paying for. .......2007-06-21

All aesthetics aside with the nice hologram box and interesting boxing it all comes in, this series of movies (or trilogy... *awaiting the e-bashing from star wars fans* )is a great collection to own.

Apart from the movies themselves, they all come with revisited discs which go into the background of each movie as well as a seperate box for documentaries on the background of character development, social/philosophical references, set design and visual technology make this a gem of a collection to own.

Top that off with the official animatrix all included in this boxset, you are left with the entire story and background from the movies seires.

To be honest with you, I dont feel the need to watch an entire movie over with commentary from the directors. I feel its a waste of time and if i do look for a particular scene's meaning I would just go to the scene instead of watching the whole thing. Each to their own though.

As are most of my reviews, a lot rides on the price of the boxset. I payed $37 dollars for it and i feel it was worth every penny. Definatly a set I will be holding onto for a while to watch with friends for a few years to come.

If you are looking to get the movies ONLY (which I'm sure a lot of the extras will come with on their extra's disc's) then maybe buying the movies seperatly is for you. However, the slight price difference gives you hours more of entertainment and a broader understanding of the saga.

5 out of 5 stars The Matrix Trilogy and Bonus DVDs.......2007-05-25

The trilogy is very good and Keanu Reeves is a good action actor in the trilogy.

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-05-16

Very good. Obviously, towards the end they got worse and actually a little boring, but otherwise matrix and matrix reloaded were very good, and the first part of matrix revolutions was good. animatrix is very entertaining(some of them), but some are a bit strange for me.

A fitting supplement to the feature-packed Matrix DVD, The Matrix Revisited provides a wealth of Matrix arcana, delivered by the 1999 blockbuster's principal cast and crew. The main course in this 163-minute feast is a two-hour documentary covering virtually every aspect of production, with teasing glimpses of fight training on the not-yet-released Matrix sequels. Of greater interest is the sheer depth of filmmaking coverage, with intelligent and amusing anecdotes and insights from all the major players (including graphic artist Geof Darrow, given overdue credit for his outstanding conceptual designs). Fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping is also a fascinating subject, and his early action-blocking videos are included for comparative study. Another segment allows obsessive fans to express their fanatical zeal for all things Matrix, and a look at the in-production Matrix anime project gives them another source of inspiration. While you're pondering which pill to take (red or blue?), The Matrix Revisited should help you decide. --Jeff Shannon

This is a documentary of the first matrix movie "The Matrix" not any subsequent releases. How can you be led to believe that this release is about the second film? If you actually watched it then you would know that it is about the first! so to the two of you that said it is a bad release because of bla bla about the second movie well that is BS.
this is a pretty good and extensive documentary!

4 out of 5 stars An exhaustive (and exhausting) look at THE MATRIX........2003-07-09

Released before extras-stuffed DVDs were more and more the norm, THE MATRIX had a fairly thin selection of supplementary material: a couple of commentaries, a trailer, and that's about it. Rather than follow the "double dip" method, whereby the movie is released with a new set of extras, and forcing people to shell out for the same picture they already bought, the minds behind THE MATRIX produced THE MATRIX REVISITED, a completely separate DVD with all the "making of" goodies for which a film fan could ask.

THE MATRIX REVISITED consists primarily of a lengthy documentary on the development and production of the first film, and additional features drop hints concerning the new movies and about THE ANIMATRIX, a collection of animated shorts set in the fictional world of the matrix. Taken together, all of these materials will take viewers three hours or more to work through. Not a bad value at all.

It's true that THE MATRIX REVISITED won't be for all tastes. The documentary is exhaustive in its detail, even going so far as to discuss what fabrics were chosen for costumes inside and outside the matrix. Those with a low tolerance for extended forays into filmmaking geekery will doubtless find themselves bored stupid by the time this DVD stops spinning. There are no fight sequences to break things up here, and no profound revelations about the actors or the story they brought to the screen. Rather, THE MATRIX REVISITED is pure trivia. It's interesting trivia, but it's still trivia.

This dearth of fun material on the disk is a side effect of THE MATRIX REVISITED's release as a standalone product. If all of this had come with the original film attached, then viewers could excuse the excess. After all, the buyer would have picked up THE MATRIX and gotten all the rest of this as a bonus. Even if he or she never watched it all, so what? Purchased separately, though it sidesteps the dreaded double-dip, THE MATRIX REVISITED confers a sort of obligation on the buyer. If one buys the disk and doesn't watch every minute of it, one didn't get a very good deal.

Even die-hard MATRIX freaks will have some trouble getting excited after a while by handheld video footage of actors working out on a cold sound stage. There's a tiring sameness about the material in THE MATRIX REVISITED that sometimes makes watching it a trial. Thankfully the documentary has been structured in such a way that something truly interesting tends to pop up every few minutes. If the viewer can stay awake during the rest slow bits, these tidbits are a reward.

In the end, how one approaches THE MATRIX REVISITED depends upon how interested one truly is in the process of making a film like THE MATRIX, and how rabid a fan one is of the film itself. Casual viewers of THE MATRIX won't find anything here worth spending the time to discover. Viewers without at least some idea of how a film is made might be confused by the documentary's familiar approach to filmmaking. Those with interest and patience, though, will find watching THE MATRIX REVISITED time well spent.

The Matrix
With The Matrix, Andy and Larry Wachowski crafted one of the most exhilarating sci-fi/action movies of the 1990s. In the not too distant future in an insipid, characterless city, a young man named Neo (Keanu Reeves) sits alone at home by his monitor, waiting for a sign--from what or whom he doesn't know--until one night, a mysterious woman named Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) introduces him to Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). A messiah of sorts, Morpheus presents Neo with the truth about his world by shedding light on what the Matrix is--a reality beyond reality that controls everyone's lives, in a way Neo can barely comprehend. With mind-boggling, technically innovative special effects and a thought-provoking script that owes a debt of inspiration to the legacy of cyberpunk fiction, this is a thinking man's journey into the realm of futuristic fantasy, a dreamscape full of eye candy that will satisfy sci-fi, kung fu, action, and adventure fans alike. --Jeremy Storey

5 out of 5 stars billions oblivious.......2003-03-07

Huge entertainment. The story addresses such hitherto unsolved human problems as the conflict between fate and free will, the true (?) nature of reality, the oppression of the individual by the system, the crushing of creativity by the bureaucratic machine, the silence of the deity, the power of self-belief, the traitor within every organisation, the hope of escape, the dream of annihilating the faceless suits, and the fantasy of redemption by faith and love. It targets the nerd within all of us (all of us?). It urges us to take the red pill, not settle for safety, steak and french fries. It reduces the rest of the world and mankind to the mindless, knee-jerk, pavlovian, birth-conditioned ant-heap that it is. All the parts are excellently performed, right in line. Great stuff, wondrously executed. Maybe just a little too much kung-fu.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2002-08-29

Did you see that STEAK??? If they're going to serve meals like that I wanna live in the Matrix - hook me up to your powerplant, I'm not doing anything with this bio-electricity anyway! ;)

Seriously, it's a brilliant story and extremely well executed. I understand it's the first in a trilogy and I'm looking forward to the next installment to see how they top themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you hunger for the sequels!.......2002-06-13

Seeing is believing and only by watching this ground-breaking film on DVD can you truly appreciate the wonder and the majesty of its technique and the talents behind it. The movie is almost forgotten in the joy of exploring the extras included, but once you finally get to it, KA-POW, man, you're blown away.

5 out of 5 stars "Woah".......2002-06-08

Truly an a amazing movie. With a deep, multifaceted plot and revolutionary special effects, The Matrix is everything that an action/sci-fi movie should be. Although Keanu Reeves is mindlessly inept as an actor, Laurence Fishburne, his mysterious mentor, and Hugo Weaving, the emotionless, robotic nemesis, Agent Smith, easily pick up the slack. The Matrix is truly a stylish and interesting adventure into the "desert of the real."

5 out of 5 stars He is the one!.......2002-04-11

Not only is Keanu Reeves hot but he portrays the computer hacker Neo sooo well! My favorite part is the major fight action in the gov. building! I can't wait for the next two movies. The VHS has only a few mistakes but all were removed on the DVD's. So instead of buying the VHS try the DVD for a little bit more for a better show! The action is packed in this and I think it rocks!

1 out of 5 stars Buy the "Ultimate Matrix Collection" instead, it's cheaper and has more features........2006-03-07

Shortly following the DVD release of the first "Matrix" film, Warner Bros. used a smaller studio called Creative Design Art to make a specially designed package to help promote their incredibly successful movie. Their first result was this, the "Platinum Limited Edition DVD Collector's Set," which originally retailed for $79 (or close to that). In my opinion, even if you're a hardcore fan of the Matrix films, this packagejust isn't worth the money, It comes in a box about two-inches thick, which makes you think you're really getting your money's worth, but as soon as you open it up -- you become disappointed. Most of this packaging is taken up by a flimsy plastic tray that contains a 35mm celluloid film frame of with a nice blown-up photo. Then there are 8 "limited edition" lobby cards prints (which are really just postcard-sized stills from the movie), a full-sized poster, and the the same copy of the family you probably already own -- in the standard DVD keep-case (the cheapist kind of DVD packaging). All of the other extras mentioned in this package (full-length audio commentary, "Take The Red Pill" featurette) are the same features found in original DVD release. Although it's Out-Of-Print now, I've noticed you can get one used for around $20, which isn't too bad, but it's probably not even worth the effort if you already own the first movie on DVD.

Warner Bros. wasn't entirely pleased with the sales generated from the Platinum Limited Edition, so they asked Creative Design Art to create a more definitive version for consumers to buy. Their second project was the one shown here, "The Matrix / The Matrix Revisited (The Gold Edition)" which retailed for $100 (and can also be found on Amazon.com). The one advantage of this new package was that it also contained the just-released 163-minute behind-the-scenes DVD "The Matrix Revisited" along with the original movie, but it also has a few "carryovers" from Creative Design's last project (namely, the senitype image from the movie, and a 35mm film frame). The cheap plastic insert from before has now been replaced with a luxury fitted slipcase, and a 16-page commemorative book. But still, all of the features found on the same previously released DVDs are found here. Aside from the packaging, there's no additional footage whatsoever, whether it's in the form of deleted scenes or bonus videos. The film frame doesn't even have "Dolby Digital" printed on it like it's supposed to, which means that it's not even a real frame of film (because that would cost the publisher money) -- it's just a cheap no-sound fabrication.

Eventually, Warner Bros. would release a definitive collection of their own instead of using a third-party, entitled "The Ultimate Matrix Collection" which is the 10-disc DVD box-set of all the movies and their corresponding "Revisited" features, plus more. Even better, you can get the ultimate collection for around $30 used on Amazon.com. Actual film frames are somewhat interesting, but if you don't really care about that kind of thing, then just get the "Ultimate Matrix Collection." You really do get a lot more for your money.

4 out of 5 stars The Revolution.......2004-07-17

The Matrix redefined the movies and has been copied to no end. Perfect in every sense: acting, story, depth and effects. Phylosophically deep to the point of spawning several books and essays on it's study. Ignore second and third parts.

1 out of 5 stars The fil is great but this pack is not worth the price........2003-05-15

Ok, the movie is GREAT, I love it, but this edition did not satisfy my. The dvds are just the same that were released previously, the film and the matrix revisited. No extras, no deleted scenes ( I believe there are none though :) ), no extra making of... Pay more than the lord of the rings - the fellowship of the ring, that even come with the statues, and 5 DVDs, 2 only for the movie, with great compression quality and dts sound. they could at least reencoded the film and removed the documentary from the movie dvd, saving space for better video quality, using more disc space. There are no other languages, but english, both for audio and subs. I regret payin 90 buck for a fake film frame, tha not even has dolby digital sound printed on it, like the Star wars episode 1 vhs special edition had. PLEASE buy the normal combo: the matrix and the matrix revisited, its the same thing for much less money.

5 out of 5 stars MATRIX.......2003-01-25

If you do not appreciate the matrix with the utmost sincerity, then you truly do not understand the matrix, and even if you do, there's a high chance that you do not fully understand either. This, of course, is not to say that I completely understand myself. The Matrix redefines cinema and bridges the gap between film and reality. To call it a rip off is a baseless insult to those who are 5000 times more seeing and visionary than yourself. Bravo to the Boys.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing.......2002-12-25

This film is simply one of the best films I have ever seen...add the amazing gift things (high quality slipcase, 35mm image in frame, etc.) which I'm always a sap for, and you get simply the best "Matrix" version out there. Plus there's the indispensable "Matrix Revisited" DVD, which has great insight into how they made the film, plus info about the upcoming ones (Matrix 2 and 3). I can't recommend this enough.

If you're buying this (which you should, definitely), and you're into the psychology part of it (reality vs. simulated reality, etc.), then buy these as well:

"Simulacra and Simulation (The Body, in Theory: Histories of Cultural Materialism)" by Jean Baudrillard

"Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems and the Economic World" by Kevin Kelly

"Introducing Evolutionary Psychology" by Dylan Evans; et al

"The Matrix and Philosophy: Welcome to the Desert of the Real (Popular Culture and Philosophy, V. 3)" by William Irwin

Oh, and a Merry Christmas to you all. :-)
