In Iron Monkey 2 (only loosely related to its predecessor), Hong Kong martial arts star Donnie Yen plays Iron Monkey, who's a cross between Robin Hood and a superhero. However, it's hard to determine what exactly his goals are because the movie is virtually incomprehensible. The story line--something to do with revolutionaries battling arms smugglers--is disjointed, the camera work is excessively wild, scenes change abruptly and without explanation ("Iron Monkey! What are you doing here?" "Never mind. Let's get the weapons."), the characters are broad and cartoonish, and the dubbing is unusually bad. Only the frequent appearance of astonishing hyperkinetic fight scenes--choreographed by the endlessly inventive Yuen Ho Ping, who came to fame as the fight choreographer of The Matrix--keep the viewer engaged. But the curious thing is that, after a while, this choppy movie starts to exert a perverse fascination. It doesn't become campy; instead, as it lurches from kung fu spectacle to strange moral pronouncements to out-of-nowhere high emotion, Iron Monkey 2 grows strangely compelling. It's as if, through directorial incompetence, the movie has been distilled to the basic elements of cinematic storytelling. While avant-garde directors like Jean-Luc Godard struggle to discover just this kind of raw, jagged, yet potent narrative, Iron Monkey 2 achieves it without even trying. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars Donnie, what were you thinking?!.......2006-08-09

This really is poor. Donnie Yen is an incredible martial artist. Billy Chow has chops too. But the film sucks. The stars are wasted. Dreadful story - usually to be expected as it's Hong Kong Cinema - but where's the thrilling choreography that makes up for the limits of a HK story? Further, my copy was faulty, (it skipped) which only added to the grief. There are a couple of decent moves, not fights, just moves, but, really, give this one a miss.

1 out of 5 stars actually deserves NO STAR at all!!!.......2006-05-29

my god, what a bomber! couldn't finish it. two stupid clowns, one young male and one female characters. stupid screenplay, stereotyped hongkong wireworks plus boring fighting sequences, unbelivablely poor ridiculous storyline. no plot could be this funny, shallow and stupid. i just can't believe hongkong movies could be this bad. neither could i believe this kinda movie would be reproduced and dotted in english version by those funny hongkong english voices and translated all the stupid dialogue into an even funnier, more stupid and ridiculous outcome. the original 'iron monkey' although also had a clown-like official guy in it, but at least the screenplay was still acceptable, but not this phony sequel, tried so shamelessly to cash in on the popular original 'iron monkey'. this was a poorly written screenplay, directed by a stupid guy, and yuen ho ping's formatted fighting scenes were so contrite and so stupidly boring. but the most unbearable thing of thise movie is the stupidity of the screenplay. i just don't want to go on and on vanting my frustration and dispise of this extremely stupid movie again.

Donnie Yen, Billy Chow, and two other guys that can fight almost as good as them. The fight scenes in this movie are good for seconds at atime, but nothing happens in this movie, and it's easily one of the worst directed movies ever, actually pretty amazing how bad this is.

1 out of 5 stars Really Bad.......2004-06-16

I felt so sorry for Mr. Yen being in this so called sequel. Please don't judge this movie in the same light of the original. If you do. You will be greatly disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars don't let the name fool you.......2003-04-15

Pretty standard low-budget HK actioner. The production quality is no where near the Quentin Tarantino presentation of "Iron Monkey." Feels like they took an old movie and repacked it for IM fans. Yuen Wo Ping is credited with the fight direction which is good. Acting directing is poor to mediocre at best... It is good to see more of Donny Yen, but I'd like to see more of him in some higher quality films, like a CTHD follow-up, Matrix-style or Jet Li film.

I'm not one to give details about movies, therefore, i endeavour to be brief and to the point. I though this movie was interesting. Eventhough the fight scenes were greatly choreographed, and amazing. I got caught up into the story, itself. Just wanting to know who did what, and who is involved in what,,it 's an amazing story to follow, not complicated,,it just griped my imagination!! This is a really good old school kung fu movie, truly and really entertaining!!

Since the late 1800s, the real-life Cantonese patriot Wong Fei-hung has evolved into an icon of Chinese pop culture, a sort of Asian Davy Crockett. He's been a central figure in Hong Kong cinema since the 1950s, most recently in Tsui Hark 's Once Upon a Time in China series. In this thrilling 1993 adventure directed by Yuen Woo-ping, we meet Wong as an earnest boy traveling with his upright pugilist father (Donnie Yen) and drawing inspiration from the activities of the benevolent masked bandit known as the Iron Monkey (Yu Rong-guang). The sheer physical prowess of the stars is often flabbergasting, and the action set pieces (especially an interlude atop a set of "Chinese poles") are staged for maximum dynamism. In effect, this is a powerful combination of the older, Baltic style of kung fu action and the newer body-slamming style pioneered by Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. This is a perfect martial arts picture to screen for any genre skeptics in your midst. --David Chute

5 out of 5 stars A great movie.......2006-11-02

Watching Iron Monkey was inspiring, out classing "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon". The fights scenes were more intense, the diversity of weapons used more varied, and the central theme more focused.

Dr Yang was the iron monkey and Miss Orchid his associate. The power of Iron Monkey is the virtue of his heroic efforts. The governor hates the iron monkey. The governor has managed to steal readily from the people by creating an artificial food scarcity. The community is powerless against the Warlord and the Shaolin monks have been paid for with a price and corruptible. The governor is a political pawn to a very powerful warlord skilled in the Buddha palm poison hand technique, who will fight the iron monkey and tiger Jade, lose, and burn to death.

The iron monkey captures the governor's money and distributes the money to the poor. Dr Yang remains free from suspicion as he treats community resident's sick with the plague.

The community protects the identity of the Iron Monkey. The Iron Monkey maintains peace and order in the community.

The governor learns the Royal Minister is coming to visit and wants to capture the Iron Monkey as a prestige boaster. Jade Tiger accidently engages the Iron Monkey in an brief hand-to-hand combat. Jade Tiger and his son are arrested and brought before the governor. The governor learns about Jade Tigers fight ability and forces Jade Tiger to find Iron Monkey, in seven days, holding his Wong Fei-Hong as ransom. Jade Tiger fight characteristic include umbrella jabs, hooks, and block and rapid foot and leg kicks. After the initial confrontation between Jade Tiger and Iron Monkey, Jade Tiger learns how much the community loves Iron Monkey, as he starves for two days without food.

Miss Orchid eventually offers Master Wong Kay-Ying (Jade Tiger) food and a friendship emerges. Jade Tigers son becomes sick and Dr Yang is summoned by the chief to help Jade Tiger's son, Wong Fei-Hong (Jackie Chan great Hero), who is sick with the plague. Dr Yang nurses the boy back to health and a bond between the families is ensured.

The Iron monkey becomes the force to fight against tyranny of the warlord and his servants: the dragon witch and the swordsman. Iron monkey is poison with the Buddha palm and Jade tiger learns his identity. Iron Monkey and Jade Tiger, the Hun Gar, duet combined to defeat the warlord.

The movie has humorous scenes and lines that are more typical with Jackie Chan movies. The Iron Monkey impersonates the warlord and commands the governor too distribute food from the warehouse too the people and give him all his gold and silver. The governor receives 30 lashings and the Iron Monkey escapes.

The Iron monkey defeats the Dragon Witch with "A Steel ball" that pierces her sword and penetrates her right eye. Iron Monkey uses a steel chain to twist the swordmans sword into a ribbon and then kill him. Iron Monkey and Jade Tiger fight the warlord on poles suspend twenty feet above ground with heat fuel burning below on the ground.

The martial arts scenes are fantastic. Raymond Chow is probably one of the Best coordinator of fighting scenes in the World. The flying stunts are more innovative than Crouching Tiger and Hidden dragon and the hand-to-hand combat more complex combining numerous techniques of five animal style and shadow kicking by Jade Tiger. The MA form highlight was a Staff form performed by Dr Yang, classic Shaolin kicks, spins, aerial manuevers, and 3D movement. The Man seemed to fly everywhere without any strings attached. Excellent.

The movie ends with the death of the Warlord, restoration of peace, and liberation from the oppressive Governor. The Iron Monkey hero is need no more and Dr Yang can continue practicing medicene for the betterment of the community. Jade Tiger and his son earn new-found respect and admiration for each other and return home.

5 out of 5 stars Robin Hood .......2006-11-01

A Doctor who helps heal people, by night he robs the rich and gives to the poor. How he fights a corrupt government official and comes to the aid of a Herbalist who has a son. His passion for a concubine turns to love and how they form a partnership in business. In the end good things happen. Watch the movie, and judge for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars A good film ruined by special effects.......2006-08-09

Donnie Yen is an incredibly talented martial artist and this movie goes a long way to proving that. Unfortunately some of the action is speeded up to the point that it's quite laughable - no idea why because the guy's just unbelievable at normal speed! And there's too much wire work - people defying gravity - for me. The story's nothing special, the acting a little above the usual Hong Kong fare, but the bad guy's can really kick butt and there are some great gems in and amongst the fight scenes. Definitely one of the better HK flicks, just not one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Kung Fu action at it's finest..........2006-06-20

Reading some of the other posters, I'm not 100% surprised if some content was edited out, which I haven't seen. Beyond that, the storyline is entertaining, and the fighting styles are heavily "wire-fu" but very inventive anyway.

If you are looking for solid "wire-fu" action, this film will meet and exceed those expectations handily.

      Product Description

For this breathtaking epic adventure set in the late Ching dynasty, acclaimed action director Yuen Woo-ping combines incredible dynamic, high-flying fight-action and stunning cinematography with a classic story of courage, honour and sacrifice. International action superstars Donnie Yen ("Once upon a Time in China 2," "Highlander 4") and Yu Rong Kwong ("Shanghai Noon," "Project S") give immaculate performances as two legendary warriors who must put their lives on the line to defeat the barbaric excesses of a corrupt political regime and protect the lives of the people whose cause they champion. Making judicious use of low-key lighting, high contrast colour combinations and a haunting soundtrack, director Yuen Woo-ping creates a unique visual tapestry and captures a mood, which is generally romantic and yet emotionally charged. Each fight sequence is both original and enervating, possessing a relentless kinetic energy and strong emotional underscoring, which lifts it well beyond traditional martial arts action.
