Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism uses the inflammatory tactics of the Fox News Channel to demonstrate the conservative bias that's handed down by Fox's owner, media mogul Rupert Murdoch. The documentary gathers interviews from media watchdogs and former Fox employees (including a former anchor, Jon Du Pre, who describes his flailing efforts to create a celebration for Reagan's birthday when the one he was sent to cover never materialized), but their overwhelming condemnation of Fox's skewed news practices isn't half as effective as footage taken directly from Fox itself--an appalling montage of pundit Bill O'Reilly telling guests to shut up; repeated efforts to paint Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry as weak and waffling, while President Bush is captured in respectful, reverent images; and management memos dictating language, subject matter, and point of view. Outfoxed is unlikely to persuade Fox News fans to change their views, but it may spur outraged liberals to take action. --Bret Fetzer
Description
"Fair and balanced"??? How about anything BUT?!?! For the first time ever, this documentary reveals the secrets of Former Fox news producers, reporters, bookers and writers who expose what it's like to work for Fox News. These former Fox employees talk about how they were forced to push a "right-wing" point of view or risk their jobs. Some have even chosen to remain anonymous in order to protect their current livelihoods. As one employee said "There's no sense of integrity as far as having a line that can't be crossed."
"Outfoxed" examines how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch's Fox News, have been running a "race to the bottom" in television news. This film provides an in-depth look at Fox News and the dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the public's right to know.
"Outfoxed" first examines media mogul Rupert Murdoch and the Australian company, News Corp., tracing how the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) helped Murdoch break the rules to establish a fourth network in the United States. The film explores Murdoch's burgeoning kingdom and the impact on society when a broad swath of media is controlled by one person.
Media experts, including Jeff Cohen (FAIR), Bob McChesney and Chellie Pingree, provide context and guidance for the story of Fox News and its effect on society.
The team behind "Outfoxed" created a system to monitor Fox News 24 hours a day for months to discover exactly how its shows worked. A team of volunteers around the country scrutinized every hour of Fox News programming, noting examples of bias in its coverage. The result is an intense examination of Fox News and the lie inherent in its favorite motto: "Fair and Balanced."

Everyone should be required to see this.......2007-06-20
There is no hype here. Just facts and interviews regarding a very profitable propoganda machine that many people are aware of- but nobody thinks they can do anything about. Please watch this movie!
Shining light on a cesspool.......2007-06-19
I found this film to be illuminating. I was, of course, already aware that Fox is nothing but a pez dispenser for GOP talking points, but I still learned quite a lot, especially about Rupert Murdock. What a guy. Most of the negative reviews here are utterly without substance, and not even worthy of response, except to say that yes; the film has a bias. It never pretends otherwise. Show me a documentary that doesn't have a bias. Highly recommended.
On Republican Brain washing of the United States.......2007-06-02
This DVD Documentary exposes Fox News as a journalistic fraud media forum for extreme right political propaganda.
Some speakers appearing to speak in the documentary on Fox News propaganda tactics include the following people:
Bob Mc Chesney Founder of Free Press and author of "The Problem of The Media."
Jeff Cohen, Former NSNBC/FOX NEWS Contributor
David Brock, President/CEO of Media Matters for America
Gene Kimmelman, Sr. Director of Public Policy and Advocacy Consumer Union.
Frank O'Donnell, Former Fox News Producer Washington DC.
Diana Winthrop, Former Fox News Producer
David Burnett, Former Fox News Reporter Washington DC.
Peter Hart, Media Analyst for Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting.
Larry Johnson, Former CIA Analyst/Fox News Contributor.
Clara Frank, Former Fox News Producer.
Richard Clarke, Former National Security Advisor
Walter Cronkite, a former TV news anchor man trusted and well respected across America in the 1960s and 70s makes a couple of appearances and statements on the journalistic integrity of Fox News.
Rupert Murdoch bought WTTG Channel 5, small, successful local News Channel in Washington DC in 1985, which later became Fox News. The news crew were left alone for some time as they produced quality news broad casts. But, eventually the Fox News station management began to dictate a one sided political perspective, scripted political messages and opinions to be broadcasted by the news crew. Political messages began to appear in odd polling, odd graphics banners on the TV screen.
Blatent censorship by cutting off guest speakers voicing a point of view Fox News station management opposed became regular practice. The most rude censor is Bill O'Reilly. He is shown again and again telling guests to shut up in emotional outbursts with an extreme lack of objectivity or tolerance to other perspectives. Overall, the current Fox News crew displays a lack of ability or willingness to listen to other opinions which conveys a serious lack of understanding and respect. If they don't cut a guest speaker off, they very likely to talk on top of the guest to drown out the sound of anything he or she has to say.
An audible tone which had been previously used to seize the viewer's attention to an important piece of breaking news known as the Fox News Alert began to be used to grab the viewer's attention to an attitude and oppinion and tabloid issues about to be broadcasted.
A phrase, "Some people say" which is used in journalism to protect anonymous sources began to be used by Fox as a scripted pretext to broad cast a political opinion.
Fox News broadcasts relentless attacks on political dissent and political opponents of the extreme right republicans and uses fear to manipulate emotions of the viewer and public opinion.
It's pointed out that the real fraud is Fox News claims to be fair and balanced because it is nothing even sort of fair nor balanced. Those who appear on Fox News having extreme right opinions are always shown in numbers significantly outnumbering their opponents. Easy questions are asked of republicans with respectful tone of voice while others are presented with more difficult questions in harsher tones.
Bill O'Reilly lies, distorts facts and subjects guests to hostility to put them off balance. Bill O'Reilly is shown overtly threatening the livelihood of celebrities who makes public statements with which he does not agree.
Iraq was being portrayed as a happy, safe place by Fox News during a time of increasing danger due to a rise in rebellion and political violence in Iraq.
As an example of a lack of journalistic objectivity, a Fox News reporter interviewing George W Bush is shown telling Bush about how The reporter's wife was campaigning for him during the elections prior to the interview.
The documentary says that George W Bush's cousin, John Ellis was working as an election analyst for Fox News in the 2000 elections when he interrupted its election coverage to announce that George W Bush was the winner of the election while voting was still in progress to create a false perception of premature election victory for Bush.
Rupert Murdoch is a paradoxical man. He enjoys the freedom of the press and the freedom of expression in the U.S. He buys what amounts to be an empire of media. Once he has the media in his grip, he dictates brain washing political propaganda to the public. If freedoms of speech, press and expression are dear to Americans, this man and other extreme right wing media people need to recognized as threats to these freedoms because they claim to be news or entertainment and they are neither. They are
extreme right political propaganda machines of the type America used to recognise as non free mediums in other totalitarian countries. These media are responsible for the new rants of hatred by Americans for other Americans who do not share their political ideology.

There is nothing out of character in this absurd diatribe that does not reflect the ideology of the liberal political action group MoveOn[...] the original distributors of this DVD.
Even Howard Kurtz, a vociferous critic of FOX, commented that Greenwald's propaganda flick, posing as a documentary, made allegations against FOX that relied on "orders, or attitudes, of an unnamed "'they.'" Kurtz chastises Greenwald for not even providing the illusion of fairness or balance himself. "Not only did he avoid contacting FOX, and indulge in some misleading editing, but the film also features a parade of the network's liberal detractors," noted Kurtz.
Had Greenwald actually been interested in making a documentary, he might have bothered to check his facts, and in doing so, would have discovered that some of the "sources" for this "documentary" never worked for FOX News Channel. Those employees he did eventually bamboozle into appearing in his amateur Leni Riefenstahl propaganda flick represent fewer than ten out of 2,000 FOX employees spanning an eight year period.
I wonder what sort of reply Greenwald would get from ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, MSNBC, CNBC, NPR, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The LA Times, asking for them to submit 100 percent of their editorial directions and internal memos? But then again, why would Greenwald be interested in exposing liberal media when their ideology mirrors his own.
Compared to the viewing audience of network TV news, FOX Channel barely registers at all. While it does trounce the other cable channels in ratings, it is a head scratch why Greenwald targeted a relatively tiny market share channel while ignoring the shameless propagandizing and biased news reporting that is de rigueur for network TV. Of course if you understand that Greenwald is a left wing ideologue, posing as a documentarian, in the mold of Michael Moore, it really isn't mysterious at all.
Outfoxed.......2007-05-21
Finally! An expose on what the news watching cognoscenti have known for years - Fox is neither fair nor balanced. Fox would not receive the overwhelmingly deserved criticism heaped upon it, if it would simply fess up to being the propaganda arm of right wing causes everywhere. This documentary shows the pressure Fox put upon both producers and reporters alike to intentionally slant the news to the right in-spite of contrary facts...Must see!

While a proposed series of original cast recording sessions for documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker (Don't Look Back) never materialized, Original Cast Album: Company survives as the first and only entry, and it was fortuitous that its subject was the 1970 musical Company. Groundbreaking in its use of a series of vignettes rather than a conventional plot, it was also one of the earliest major works for composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim, the most important figure in musical theater over the last quarter-century. Unlike films, theater productions rarely have a permanent record, so a musical is preserved for posterity by the cast recording. This puts all the pressure on the recording session, as cast member Susan Browning explains during the recording of "You Could Drive a Person Crazy": a live performance can be imperfect, but "this is different. This is the definitive, it's the end-all and the be-all of this song, and... God, that could drive a person crazy!"
For this film, Pennebaker and his crew took three hand-held cameras into the studio and filmed the singers, the orchestra, and the control booth, then condensed the 18.5-hour recording session into a fast-moving 60 minutes. You can see the intensity and sheer enjoyment on the faces of the cast, and record producer Thomas Z. Shepard, show producer-director Harold Prince (both frequent Sondheim collaborators), and Sondheim (a notorious perfectionist) become alternately exhilarated and exasperated as they listen and try to solve various problems. Other interesting moments include an emphasis on the orchestra rather than the lead vocal in "Another Hundred People," and Elaine Stritch's exhausting take after take of "The Ladies Who Lunch." This is a rare look at an important moment in Broadway history, and obviously, it's highly recommended for Broadway fans. --David Horiuchi

Called a "monumental achievement" by the Los Angeles Times, Company is the extraordinary documentary capturing the explosive recording session for Stephen Sondheim's landmark musical. On May 3, 1970, just a few days after its triumphant Broadway opening,

Great Almost Forgotten Cast Album.......2007-02-16
I never saw Company on stage, but was introduced to snippets of it on a DVD about Broadway and realized I would probably like the whole album. So, I ordered it, and I did.
Then I rented the DVD that shows how the cast album was made. .and that was even better! So, I hope that someday Company will tour. . I think it may be doing a Revival on Broadway, but I'd have to check that out. . but whatever the case, it's an interesting and well done cast recording and if you are a Sonheim fan, a must for your collection.
Part Rip-off, Part Astounding!.......2007-01-04
What I expected from this album did not happen and for that I am sorry. You see, I am so old that back in the old, old sixties, I saw this show on the Broadway stage along with Dean Stockwell and broke out in goosebumps when Elaine Stritch sung her classic "Here's to the Ladies Who Lunch!" What's on this DVD is NOT the show, but merely sketches of the rehearsals, much like the beginning of "Follies in Concert." In "Follies" they went on to do the whole programme and went away satisfied. In "Company" that did not happen and when the rehearsal was over they all went home and that was the end of it! I was so shocked that they (the producers of the DVD) would do that, that I didn't believe it and went back to the scene selections looking for a show--there was none. It's not a question of space on the DVD as I stated, they followed that format in "Follies." So, in sum, I adore Stephen Sondheim and I liked the real show "Company"--but the DVD leaves me there wishing for the whole show. This DVD album is a ripoff!

Brilliant rare documentary sneak-peek into cast-album making..........2007-01-03
This rare treat from documentary filmmaker Pennebaker is a must-have for any Sondheim lover like me. Elaine Stritch's "hung-over" initial rendition of the classic song The Ladies Who Lunch is unbelievable. The late Pamela Browning sings Another Hundred People beautifully and we get to see most of Beth Howland's (Vera on the TV sit-com Alice) seminal rendition of the Sondheim gem Getting Married Today. I only wished that Pennebaker had released extra footage of more songs, more takes, more banter. The show is currently back on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in a wonderful redux revival starring Raul Esparza and Barbara Walsh directed by John Doyle. In this revival (cast album out soon I am sure) one gets to enjoy the music and lyrics in ways never before enjoyed because of the lack of focus on the visual aspects of the show. This DVD is a worthy testament to a brilliant classic multi-Tony-winning piece of marvellous musical theatre history.
A great documentary by a great filmmaker.......2006-02-28
I can't stop watching this documentary about the recording of the cast ablum of a wonderful musical Broadway show. And I found watching the film with the commentary was as entertaining as watching the movie without the talking heads. The film quality of the transfer to DVD isn't perfect, but it's a minor flaw. To top it off, you listen to great songs by the great Stephen Sondheim. I fully recommend it, especially if you're a fan of the documentary about Bob Dylan, "Don't Look Back," which was made by D.A. Pennebaker as well. Pennebaker just records what's in front of him and let's everything play out without manipulation. It's pure and simple and top-notch filmmaking.
If You Like Broadway Musicals, You'll Probably Like This.......2004-12-23
If you like Broadway, if you like Stephen Sondheim (or even if you don't), if you like behind-the-scenes looks at show business, you'll probaby like this DVD. It's a documentary of how the original cast recording of Company was put together a few days after the show opened in New York.
All one Sunday and through 4 a.m. Monday the tracks were rehearsed, changed, critiqued, redone until with one exception the record was finished. The exception was Elaine Stritch's recording of the big song from the show, "The Ladies Who Lunch." It's a dramatic show stopper, and Stritch just couldn't nail it. All the other cast members had been dismissed, so it was just Stritch, the orchestra, and the recording and creative teams. The more takes they took, the more flaccid her performance became and more tired her voice sounded. This section alone on the DVD is high drama. (They finally recorded the orchestra track and had her come back two days later--when she did nail it, to everyone's relief.)
The program takes less than an hour and there's no voice over (unless you access a fairly interesting interview made 30 years later by Stritch, Harold Prince, the show's Broadway director, and Pennebaker). You move from song to song seeing how adjustments were made, how help was given, how nuances became highly important. Interspersed are snippets of discussion by Sondheim and Prince of how the show came about.
Everyone was acutely aware that they were making the permanent recording of the show's score. The stress, no matter how professional the actors were, had to have been incredible. There's Dean Jones with a fairly brittle voice who was probably chosen for the lead because of his movie name recognition. He clearly looks uncomfortable throughout. At one point the recording supervisor, Thomas Z. Shephard, says to him, "You're very good and I don't want to spoil something that's potentially marvelous..." Uh oh. Pamela Meyers was a young singer in her first Broadway show with a big song to perform, "Another Hundred People." She looks a bit like Brigitte Jones. Sondheim works with her to get a single note where it should be. She is so serious listening to him and he takes the time to be gentle with her. And there's Stritch, an actress who seems unable to turn it off. She draws the center of attention to her just enough to be noticeable. Most things tend to be dramatic with her, and her struggle with "Ladies" is as much self-involved as it is her aiming for excellence.
I'm not one of those who thinks a great deal of Company as a show. I've seen it on Broadway and two or three times in rep. It's a musical about marriage and relationships and the inability to commit...or rather, it's a story about relationships and marriage amongst rather superficial upper-East Side New Yorkers. Those are easy targets and the point of view gets, for me, a little tiresome. But the songs are great, and the show was exciting and different when it opened.
As I said, if you like Broadway musicals, Steven Sondheim, and behind-the-scenes looks, you'll probably get a kick out of this.

In Bush Family Fortunes: The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, journalist Greg Palast argues persuasively that George W. Bush was allowed into the Air National Guard ahead of other applicants due to his political connections; paints a damning portrait of how over 90,000 Florida voters, predominantly black, were prevented from voting in the 2000 election; discusses the number of government contracts handed out to large corporate donors to Bush's campaign--and that's just the first half-hour. Palast doesn't have the cinematic savvy of Michael Moore, but Bush Family Fortunes acts as a valuable corollary to Fahrenheit 9/11, exploring certain facets of the same argument--specifically, that the Bush family is detrimentally tied to both the Saudi Arabian ruling elite and the American oil industry, with whom they trade influence and money for mutual benefit. Palast's investigations will stir the blood of any Democrat and may raise doubts in some Republicans. -- Bret Fetzer

...US got a fine president doing a fine job, but since he liked a b...j.. in the office from time to time, they prefered to replace him with one nerd who liked to f... the US and the whole world.
Why should anyone be concerned about some petty elections' misdemeanors, when concern should be about using (and maybe asking for) fabricated evidence so he could start a stupid war, next being the first terrorist in US by firing (or getting them fired) those who are trying to make some sense and getting things back on the right track (extreme right wing doesn't fit that description). Of course, since his grandfather made his fortune by helping Hitler's finances, he must have learned there what he was supposed to do.
Don't beat around the Bush, TRASH IT!!!! He deserved impeachment even SINCE HE WAS ELECTED THE FIRST TIME : WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?????
based loosely on facts.......2007-01-19
I have to admit this is a little over the top. However. that said it still contains important facts that americans should be made aware of. some what of an inside look at the ugly side of our reality with bush
One Of The Great Investigative Reporters Of Our Time.......2006-12-24
Greg Palast does the type of investigative reporting made illegal under "Patriot" Act III. Greg bends over backwards to give people the benefit of the doubt which really makes them look bad when he gets the goods on them. Greg and his team do exhaustive research. Greg's investigations are also funded by a non-profit organization so he's not beholden to the corporate media. Greg Palast is my hero. If you have an aversion to the truth, you probably won't like this video or any of Greg's work. If you like true investigative reporting, Greg is your man.

Description
BRAIN DONORS is the hilarious story about a wealthy widow Lillian (Nancy Marchand) who decides to found a ballet company after getting legal advice from her lawyer Roland Flakfizer (Turturro). Before long, she has two incapable assistants including a useless jack-of-all-trades and master of none named Jacques (Nelson) and Rocco (Smith) who is a cab driver whose credentials include pool cleaner, liposuctioner and toupee salesman. The result is an outrageously funny attack on high society as the characters unintentionally create a mess out of every endeavor.

Hilarious & Entertaining.......2007-05-30
My husband first showed me this movie when we were just college sweethearts, and because I was a serious ballet dancer and I also loved corny comedies, he knew I would love this movie. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves physical (and sometimes ridiculous) comedy. My favorite scene is the one of the serious ballet dancers of Swan Lake amidst the giant yellow duck being persued by hunters. You will laugh throughout the entire movie and be highly entertained.
hahahaha.......2007-05-25
I love this movie. I saw it when I was a little kid and I wanted it to be released on dvd for years! Finally it did, I love it even more! It's old comedy but it's great.
Funny, but could have been better.......2007-05-10
A Marx Brothers homage with John Turturro in the Groucho role. Plot is incidental with some scenes directly out of Marx Brothers films. Unfortunately the other two actors opposite Turturro are not nearly as funny. Still, good for a few laughs when you're in the mood.
A True Cult Movie.......2007-03-01
A short word on Brain Donors (1992): Get it. I don't even think it was featured for a full week at the cinemas, but it made cable and that's where I found it. It is truly a great fast talking Marx Brothers movie--but made fifty years later. John Turturro is Groucho, Mel Smith is an English Chico and Bob Nelson is not quite a mute Harpo. But that's all right, we needed a new Marx Brother movie anyhow, and these guys will do. It's truly a clone of "Night At The Opera" but dressed up nineties-style and ballet instead of opera. So get it anyway and be prepared to laugh. By the way it came from the group that did Naked Gun and Hot Shots! movies, so you will know what you are in for. Enjoy!
An affectionate and hilarious tribute to the Brothers Marx.......2006-11-22
Whether or not you have ever seen a Marx Brothers movie, BRAIN DONORS will make you laugh out loud. Writer Pat Proft, Director Dennis Dugan and head wackos the Zucker Brothers have crafted a tribute to the kings of anarchic comedy. Specifically modeled on A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, John Turturro has the Groucho part, Bob Nelson has Harpo (and he gets to talk, too!), British comic Mel Smith has Chico, Nancy Marchand takes Margaret Dumont's role, and everyone has a grand time. From the opening Claymation titles to the climactic destruction of a ballet, it's fast, furious and very, very funny. BRAIN DONORS came on the tail end of the AIRPLANE-inspired comedies of the Eighties, so not very many people saw it in theatres the first time around. Fortunately, we now have it on DVD. Enjoy!

Rip Torn was critically acclaimed for his commanding performance in this 1993 drama set in Virginia in 1927. Where the Rivers Flow North is about an old-time logger who defends his property against a pair of power-company executives (Michael J. Fox and Bill Raymond) seeking to build a dam on Torn's leased land. Native American actress Tantoo Cardinal is equally superb as Torn's longtime partner and ardent supporter, and the strength of their relationship is what gives this modestly budgeted, beautifully photographed independent feature most of its high-spirited appeal. The film, adapted from a novel by Howard Frank Mosher, was written and directed by Jay Craven, and would likely have earned Rip Torn an Oscar nomination had it been more widely seen at the time of its release. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Fair and believable.......2006-11-22
Rip Torn plays a gritty old logger who just wants to keep his forest and trout streams in tact but is suddenly pitted against Michael J. Fox and a corporation that wants to build a big dam that will take them all away. The movie is commendable for not making the dam-builders horrible monsters and Torn the epitome of moral righteousness: the former want to bring modern services to remote areas and the latter is not an example of political correctness. Tantoo Cardinal plays Torn's wife, and she is perhaps the biggest asset in the movie; she is a spunky and sensitive actress. The storyline is a strong one (it's set during the 1920s), and the photography is stunning. Made on a tight budget, the production makes up for cut corners with sincerity of purpose. Pretty good movie, all around.
This film is a MUST SEE!!.......2006-07-25
This film seems to be about as authentic as possible reflecting wilderness life near the turn of the century. Keeps you on the edge of your seat as the story developes with an ending that is unexpected.
unexpected yet academy material.......2006-03-11
This movie was filmed in Vermont by moderate to successful actors filming for a Vermont Film maker.
The story is totally believable, the charators are believeable and it is a wonderful movie to just sit and watch on a Sunday afternoon.
Pure stubbornness.......2005-02-19
Noel was an idealist. He wanted things to stay the way they were.
he leased the land he, and his live in indian squaw lived on, and distiled cedar oil for a living, and he didn't aim to give it up
for any amount of money, because it would destroy his livelyhood.
He absolutly couldn't be reasoned with, with even his best friend.
This story is full of adventure.and conflict.
It's one of the most underated films I can think of.
Rip Torn, and Tanto Cardinal were perfect in their depictions
of the characters they played. In fact if I'd had anything to do with it Tantoo Cardinal would have gotten an oscar for her performance. She was phenomenal!!
Rip Rips it and Tantoo tatoos it.......2004-01-24
If I could give this more stars I would...... The photography is beautiful and gives justice to the setting.... The music is perfect but the acting is just incredible. What a pair... Rip Torn as "Mister" became my favorite all time actor with this one. Tantoo Cardinal is perfect in her role.

Two bored businessmen, exiled to a remote company outpost on a six-week business trip, decide to enliven their visit by romancing a deaf woman and then savagely dumping her. Slimy Chad (Aaron Eckhart) convinces schlumphy Howard (Matt Molloy) to take part in the vicious scheme by framing it as an act of revenge against uppity womankind, but it quickly becomes apparent that he harbors some even more sinister motives. What might have been a simple exploration (some, no doubt, would say reiteration) of straightforward misogyny is elevated by the remarkable performance of Eckhart; at once charming and nauseating, his fascinating interpretation of pure competitive evil dominates the film. Neil LaBute's intelligent script is somewhat reminiscent of Whit Stillman's darker moments (minus the collegiate cleverness and zany warmth), and his direction, while rarely visually impressive, does connote the hellish impersonality of corporate interiors with chilling success. The director-screenwriter deserves additional plaudits for resisting both the tidal pull toward poetic justice and the temptation to draw either of his main characters as even slightly sympathetic. A study in ugliness, a rubbernecker's delight, a time bomb. --Miles Bethany
Customer Reviews:
Let's hurt somebody.......2007-05-29
A couple of office buddies, sick of some bad luck with the ladies, devise a sinister plan--find a nice woman and both stomp all over her heart. Just for fun. Oh yes, men are pigs, but this movie is hilarious and horrifying.
There are several occasions where you're placed in the cross-fire of some extremely blunt male conversations. Some of it feels a little forced, but most of their harsh statements and offensive jokes feels like another regular day in the company of men.
The two main players in this game are played by Aaron Eckhart and Matt Malloy. Just like in Thank You for Smoking, Eckart seems like a complete natural for the charismatic but arrogant business exec. Malloy fits in well as his feeble sidekick. They find the perfect victim for their despicable plan--a naive, pretty woman at the office who happens to be deaf. Her handicap adds to the cruelty of their competition.
There is one particular scene in this movie that made me quite uneasy. Eckart demoralizes a young, black employee by challenging him to drop his drawers and prove he has the (guts) to excel in the company. Talk about corporate pressure...
MAJOR SPOILERS-
I have to comment on the ending, because it's what makes this black comedy so brilliant. I was totally suprised by it. But it's actually true to life.
The nice guy finishes last, the girl gets her fragile heart broken, and the bad boy gets what he wants and doesn't learn any life-altering lessons. You don't see that sort of thing in movies very often. But this conclusion is what sets this story apart.
mean guys being mean.......2007-05-14
I was writing a screenplay and struggling to make my characters meaner people. Someone told me to see this movie, and I loved it. These guys are really horrible, it was great. Just when you think they are the worst, they get worse. Great ending, surprises.
Not as good as his later works........2007-03-07
I agree with a review that Roger Ebert gave Your Friends and Neighbors, which was, it was like Quinten Tarantino's Pulp Fiction to his Reservior Dogs. This film is a singular work, not on the scope of Your Friends and Neighbors, and not as good. Some scenes were very good and entertaining, and because of that, surely deserves to be watched. Hopefully if it goes on sale even more. At 20 dollars it would be a good buy. However, I did not find myself drawn into the failures of the characters as much as I was hoping for. So I find myself having to give it 3 stars.
looking at life and love at different angle.......2007-03-02
sometimes is a good thing. there are many people like these three people in real life everywhere. heartless, mindless, cruel, manipulating, demanding...there are people just like these men and woman we are meeting day to day. your boy friend or girl friend may be just like that kind of person. they use people by stabbing people in the back to crawl higher on the corporate ladder. hurting people mercilessly.
don't view this film with your own personal morality standard if it too high, then i simply suggest that you ignore it, don't watch it. if you cannot watch something with an open-minded view, there actually has less stuff you could enjoy except those beautiful, pretty wallpapers on your pc screen.
Ugly and stupid...........2006-10-06
This is one of those typically smug, self satisfied, Generation X 90's films, a film that gleefully shows the dark side of human nature but not in an interesting or an artistic way. It seems LaBute just wanted to show how nasty he could be. Believe me, I am not an overly sensitive, politically correct leftie or anything. I am a deep admirer of Catherine Breillat and Ingmar Bergman, and their films are not very happy. I do not accept the self indulgence which is on display here. This film reminds me of another piece of garbage film called Very Bad Things. Some critics and moviegoers liked that film because they thought it was just a very dark comedy. It wasn't. It was a sadistic, smarmy film that reveled in its cruelty without any intelligence behind it. This film really doesn't feel misogynistic to me. The humiliation of the woman isn't really why I dislike the film so much. It's the attitude towards the audience. It just feels like LaBute just killed something, and is forcing you to watch it over and over again, and he keeps saying "that's the way the world is baby! Hahahaha!". There's a ridiculous scene (which Roger Ebert thought was brilliant for some demented reason) where Aaron Eckhart forces a black employee to drop his pants. There's no point to the scene, and it doesn't even fit in with the rest of the film, just in terms of the narrative. A lot of people compared this film to a Kubrick film, and it is deeply insulting to Kubrick (and to fans of his, of which I include myself). Kubrick's films were injected with an artistry and intelligence that this film sorely lacks. LaBute's next film, Your Friends and Neighbors, was a bit better, but that too had a "shocking" scene in which Jason Patric talked about gleefully raping a man. Don't believe the hype of this film. It's not worth seeing.

I was hoping to see the Points a Artist gets per release&also the reaction of Artists through these meetings. but this is a Pretty Good documentary on the Corperate World of Hip-Hop Music.alot of Politics&Decision making.

Description
The Cold War may be over, but things are about to heat up again! Oscar® winner* Gene Hackman (Enemy of the State) teams up with Mikhail Baryshnikov (White Nights) in this fast paced, thrill-a-minute ride that hurtles through Europe, culminating in a death-defying confrontation atop the Eiffel Tower! When an ex-CIA agent (Hackman) is called out of retirement to escort a Soviet spy (Baryshnikov) to Berlin for a prisoner trade with the Russians, it seems like business as usual. But when the former adversaries realize they've been double-crossed by their own governments, they must work together to uncover and destroy the double operatives within both the CIA and the KGB to win this intricate and deadly spy game. *1992: Supporting Actor, Unforgiven; 1971: Actor, The French Connection
Customer Reviews:
Another Chase Film.......2006-12-28
This film starts with a simple deal. An imprisoned Soviet spy and $2,000,000 will be exchanged for a captured American. The deal will be done in an underground station in Berlin. But something is wrong, and the deal is canceled before the swap is done. The opposition open fire, but they escape from them, and the people Sam works for. Now the plot has them on the run with the Two Million in marked money. They escape from the people who pursue them. Until they are found.
The CIA wants to turn over the money to the KGB so they can ransom the captured American. [This money seems to come from a South American drug exporter who makes deals with the right people, the aftermath of the "Contragate" scandal.] But there are complications in the plans. Sam and the Russian plan to take the money for their retirement to the sunny Seychelles. They are found and one is captured. So now they plan to escape with the money. These two manage to outwit the combined forces of the CIA and KGB. Believable? You will see many sights in this film, with humorous scenes.
It will remind you of countless similar stories from "The Defiant Ones" to whatever will be in the movie theaters this year.
Taking "Company Business" way too seriously!.......2006-11-06
I like this movie. I like Gene Hackman and Mikhail Baryshnikof, and they play off each other very well. There are very serious plot 'issues', and parts of it make no sense at all. However, I am so tired of critics (Both 'self styled' and professional) turning movies into "statements" about the 'human condition', or defining them as 'searing indictments of the times we live in' that I pay as much attention to their reviews as any reader should pay to this one! This is a movie. It's fun. It's fiction. It's sort of stupid. It has no message other than to make money and entertain people.
I can't remember where I first saw it, probably on some cable movie channel, but I looked for it for years till it came out on DVD. I think it is probably because I like the actors, and that I spent lots of time in the locations where it was filmed. The action is entertaining, the contrast between Hackman and Baryshnikof and the typical "James Bond" secret agent is clearly defined. These guys are basically "over the hill has beens" just trying to survive. Sort of like an end of the Cold War Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Just fun holding a weak plot together with irony and a few good laughs. I liked it. (I also repeat myself!)
Baryshnikov and Hackman save the day.......2006-07-01
I watched this despite bad reviews because I really wanted to see Baryshnikov in a feature film like this. And he does a great job. I'm wondering why Hollywood never offered him more roles like this over the years, since he's really quite good at it. Despite the chemistry of the actors, the movie is just very hokey and pointless. They try to make the story interesting by alluding to the extent of corruption within the U.S. government, but I think that's all common knowledge these days and not really that shocking anymore. I was amused throughout the movie that the CIA and Russia were upset about losing 2 million dollars, because I kept thinking of scenes in Austin Powers when everyone is laughing at Dr. Evil for thinking 1 million dollars was a lot of money... In short, this movie was just kind of juvenile and nothing extraordinary. Baryshnikov fans should be pleased though.
Spy movie........2006-04-21
I have watched some of this and can't understand what is going on. The movie is boring and plotless. Nevertheless it is entertaining because of the acting. Both actors were wonderful to see, especially if you are a Baryshnikov fan. Gene Hackman was very absorbing to watch in the film. I also enjoyed the filming which was in different countries. It was a nice way to relax, even though I don't consider it a good movie. Still, it was entertaining.
Enjoyable Junk.......2005-09-28
Company Business is anything, but a serious spy thriller. Even though Hollywood heavies: Gene Hackman & Mikhail Baryshnikov are present, they just here to have fun. It's a junky little film that is preposterous, and yet enjoyable at the same time. If you feel like seeing a very light entertainment, take a look at Company Business.

I love this movie..........2005-12-23
Perhaps I'm a little biased because I absolutely LOVE Wood Harris but this was the first film I ever saw him in and I loved his performance in this movie. Not only was he SEXY as ever, but he was also sensitive, which is a side that is not often revealed by so-called rap artists (his role in the movie). Although I don't really like Gina Rivera (based on her role in Soul Food-the movie), I did like her performance in this movie and thought that the lead characters worked well together. This movie was intriguing, it kept me interested from start to finish and it's one of those movies that, while not Grammy award-winning, is a nice reprieve from the real world...especially the drama! This is one of my favorite all-time BET movies (this and Masquerade) and although so many people (surprisingly) gave it a bad review, I enjoyed watching it and will add it to my collection so that I can watch it anytime I want!
yall crazy,to me this was a nice movie!!!.......2005-12-08
on a scale from 1 to 10,i'll give it an 8!!!
It wasn't that bad!!!.......2005-11-14
This movie is okay...Not great, but not bad either. If you are a jaded person, you may not be able to get it (or want to). This movie requires you to have some faith in love and humanity. Wood Harris is an up and coming actor...Not your "traditional" leading male. Lisa Raye is beautiful, and plays the role of conniving diva very well. This movie has 'umph'...an intangible lure that keeps you watching. This makes up for much of the rigidness of the filmmaking...All in all, worth the watch.
Wasn't the Best.......2005-03-22
This wasn't the best movie I had ever seen, but Lisa Raye was so sexy in this movie. I watched it because it was on BET one day and I had nothing else to do. Lisa Raye was the only thing that attracted me to the film. Other than that, don't waste your time.
It was interesting.......2004-10-19
It was interesting that i actually sat and watched this whole movie. The acting was the worst i had ever seen. The funniest part in the movie to me was when he was running behind the girl yelling, "LeNOIR! LeNOIR! LOL...The only thing I did like about this movie was the song the girl sang..."Rhap-SO-deee...!" After i suffered through the movie i found the song actually stuck on me and that's how I came across this review board. I'm trying to find out if that song was really recorded and if so, who sings it. No offense actors...everybody's gotta start somewhere.

This movie sucks. Talentless gibberish and stereotypical garbage. I really don't see how anyone rational could say this movie is of any value. Its boring, its stupid, it wasn't funny at all. I'll probably get a drinking problem now trying to forget that I ever had to watch this trash.
Don't buy it, don't rent it, don't even think about this movie. Its bad! I would give it a -5 if I could. This should be put in the same place as Arsenio Hall, FORGOTTEN!
Death of a Dynasty.......2007-01-21
I thought this movie was hilarious, and was not expensive at all.
FANTASTIC!!!.......2006-02-08
When I first saw this movie, I thought it was funny as H$ll! It now stays in heavy rotation at my house. Anyone that I know who hasn't seen it, I pass the word on... From start to finish, EXCELLENT. If you do not have a sense of humor, do not buy this movie. This was definitely a good investment.
DEATH OF A MOVIE!!!.......2006-01-29
This is by far the worst movie I've ever seen. Don't waste your time buying it. They have reject actors playing the parts of Dame Dash and Jay-Z (who do terrible jobs)!! Movie had no point to it.. Simply terrible.
Very well done...........2005-09-15
This movie was so funny!!! Anybody who watches it will love it!! Dash's directorial debut was wonderful!!! Its very ironic, the things that are happening now, and what happened in the movie, makes you wonder...
