Disappointing, But Still Essential to Fans.......2006-07-06
PROS:
- The videos to "Butterfly", "Breakdown", and "The Roof" can't be found anywhere else, and they're excellent videos.
- The performance of "Fantasy" is great, love the chair theme.
- It's nice to see behind-the-scenes Mariah. After viewing this, I really did feel I knew her a little better.
- The conversation with Brenda K. Starr was interesting
CONS-
- Horrible editing of performances. "Hopelessly Devoted to You" was so short, and I really wanted to see that one.
-I felt Mariah could of stretched herself vocally more in performances. Her live singing here pales in comparison to "MTV Unplugged" and "Here is Mariah Carey"
-The songlist was disappointing. Where is "Vision of Love"? And "Make It Happen"? And why couldn't she have sung the entire "Butterfly" instead of the little teaser intro.
- The scenes of her swimming with dolphins and hanging out with Bing and Bong (the puppies) were actually longer than some of her performances!
Sony better recognize who lined thier pockets in the 90's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-06-28
We did when we bought all those Mariah albums. I think we deserve better when it comes to Mariah performances on Dvd. I mean they still haven't released The First Vision on dvd yet I don't think they ever will. This concert has so much bad editing. Let her sing one song all the way through at least once. The only reason I gave this dvd five stars is because of the exclusive music videos. The Roof and Breakdown are classic. Swimming with the dolphins was also very cute.
big disappointment!.......2006-01-16
1.As a Mimi fan, this DVD show bad perfomences of her (with Olivia NJ very bad video) its obvious she has much better perfomences aruond the world.
2.the vidios are cut in the muddle
3.some vidios are changed in the middle to another performences - how can i enjoy half a show?? its wired and dissaponting to see that.
4.I saw much better performences on internet sites and I am sad to waist 13$ on a bad DVD like this one.
5.I also orderd Medison Squere Garden DVD and he was amazing! so I have a way to compere between a good DVD and a bad one.
A disappointing effort of a concert presentation but good exclusive vids.......2005-07-17
I just finished watching this and would agree with a couple of previous reviewers. First of all the concert portion (only 45 mins) to me was disappointing. I've seen her in concert and that was WAY better than this presentation. Not to dis Mariah but what was up with your hair in most of it?!? Her hair was like a cavewoman. There is an invention and it's called a brush. Terrible job by the stylists on that as well as some of her wardrobe choices. I agree with the horrible editing others of stated. Some of the audio as well is also disappointing. I hear some odd crowd noises at times when I should be hearing Mariah. Also this is hardly around the world, seems most of it focused on Australia, Japan, and New York. There were too many "fluff" pieces that could have added up to more actually singing performances which is what I paid for. I don't really care for her dogs, swimming with dolphins, etc. Just sing and dance baby. Highlights for me were Fantasy, Whenever you call, Honey, the videos of The Roof, My All, and especially one of my favorites--Breakdown saved this DVD. I hope she releases a better DVD like a compilation of her full concerts (like 2 hrs) and videos--(I can't find that Sweetheart video which has been absent from any DVD thus far). They need to do a presentation along the lines of Janet Jackson's concert DVDs. I would instead of this DVD recommend another called Mariah's #1's.
OH - MY - GOD.......2004-12-01
mariah carey's so awesome.
ok . for this people who 're so blind.
1. she sings live OK. i was there at the concert when it happened. and i know it live NOT fake. so don't show your waste brain and told everyone else it fake.
2. even if it called " Around the world " .it doesn't mean she gotta go to every country, does it. NOBODY EVER GO TO EVERY COUNTRY even YOUR GRANDMOM and GRANDPA.
buy it .believe me.

A Lovely & Charming Brooke Shields.......2005-07-25
Brooke Shields is lovely, in this amusing and novel (comic strip characters come to life), action caper adventure. Tho critics diss the film, I think its goofy chases and comments by the characters are amusing to watch. Just sit back and enjoy the visual colors, and pretty, radiant Brooke Shields, who knows how to charm! It's just old fashioned movie fun and colorful capers.
Helpful.......2005-05-22
Clearly described film. My interest in fashion made me want the film since it was revealed that clothes were by a noted designer.
Absurd but delightful cmic fantasy.......2004-06-03
Brook Shields plays newspaper reporter Brenda Starr, the glamorous heroine of a strip cartoon drawn by a slightly wet but amiable artist, who somehow manages to draw himself into the strip and finds himself sharing her adventures as they try to find a missing professor who has developed a secret formula to replace petrol and who is also being pursued by various baddies (well, something like that anyway). The artist naturally has a crush on the glamorous Brenda, but romantic compications occur when gorgeous Brazilian aristocrat Basil St. John (Timothy Dalton in tight black trousers and an eyepatch,oh crikey, I'm drooling again)turns up, he's also after the formula, I think. Look, I've watched this film three times now and I still don't really understand the plot, but who cares. It's a lot of fun anyway, and with Brook Shields in tight skirts and Timothy Dalton in tight trousers it has something to please everyone. True, there is a rather long bit in the middle of the film where Dalton isn't around, but you can't have everything, and the rest of the time, he's there, and absolutely divine. Don't worry about the baffling plot and crazy characters, just enjoy it.
Funny movie.......2004-02-19
Yes, I admit, I bought this movie because Timothy Dalton stars in it. And it does not disappoint. It is a movie with lots of humour and not to be taken too seriously. Just sit back and enyoy the humour. It has no pretensions of deep human emotions or of world philosophy and that is what makes it so enjoyable.
So Many Pizza Hut Plugs in This One It'll Make You Dizzy.......2004-02-02
We know of Timothy Dalton because we shamefully watched all of the James Bond movies, happening to see the one or two Dalton starred in. (Now, a man unleashes a wet, sickly cough, bracing himself on kitchen counter for support). "Brenda Starr" is one of the worst movies ever. What can account for this? Try one too many liberal arts graduates shuffling around under dim lighting in an empty warehouse, while yet another chain smoker coughs horribly into a tissue. It all comes up bloody in the end. At last! Brooke Shields is no longer making films!

Named after a Buddy Holly song and set to a score of early American rock hits, Claude Whatham's story of a restless working-class lad in Britain the late 1950s (reportedly inspired by the early life of John Lennon) is a portrait dissatisfaction and disaffection. Real-life rocker David Essex (of the hit single "Rock On") stars as a Jim MacLaine, a schoolboy who chucks it all in a spontaneous rebellion. Not so much an angry young man as simply frustrated and directionless, he drifts through seasonal jobs, scamming girls with his veteran carnival buddy (a cocky Ringo Starr with rocker sideburns) and killing time in dance clubs. The overwhelming emptiness finally sends him wandering back to his dreary hometown for a more respectable life, but it's no better fit. While music is never the focus of the film, the nascent rock & roll scene simmers around the edges through American records and British cover bands (Billy Fury and Keith Moon appear in cameos). The drab small towns and chilly seaside holiday camps evoke a stifling sense of conformity and social stagnation--think of it as a uniquely British take on Rebel Without a Cause--that becomes the crucible for the rebellious British rock & roll explosion around the corner. It's considered to be one of the great rock films, and it spawned a sequel, Stardust. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
This isn't supposed to be about a good guy.......2007-02-02
Seems everyone who denigrates this movie at all, does so bc Essex's character is such a scumbag. That's what makes it real. I felt I was almost watching a documentary.
One for the time capsule.......2006-11-10
David Essex stars in this movie about a young knockabout in 60s Britain who is attracted to rock and roll, mainly as a way of avoiding the responsibilities of work and adulthood in general. The movie has a great authentic atmosphere, but the viewpoint about the main character is not clear. It's removed, almost documentary tone reminded me of "Georgie Girl."
Ringo Starr has a featured role as a carnival worker who befriends him and shows him the ropes. He is outstanding, and made me wish he had more movie roles like this one.
Good Period Rock 'N' Roll Drama.......2004-10-30
This film evokes the fifties rock 'n' roll period quite well, thank you. The film tells the story of a disaffected youth (David Essex) who runs away from the monotony of his "normal life" and it's inherent responsibilities. He finds himself working odd jobs at a seaside carnival where he befriends another kindred soul(Ringo Starr). Later, he gets his girlfriend pregnant and finds the responsibility of husband and father so overbearing when he hears the clarion call of rock 'n' roll. David Essex is quite excellent in the lead role, and the film is at pains not to portray his decisions as noble ones. What I don't get is that Essex's character is supposed to be a John Lennon type but I just don't see it. Ringo gives probably his best screen appearance, ever! It's the first time I've seen a film he's appeared in where you think he's in character and not an extension of his Beatles persona. It's also good to see Keith Moon in a nice little cameo. I'm still waiting for the film's sequel, "Stardust" to come out on DVD.
Not exactly rock and roll.......2003-12-31
Other than a brief, but tantalizing few scenes with Billy Fury, there isn't much charisma in the stars. I bought this dvd for the Billy Fury scenes. Billy is incredible. His image and performances are vital. Wish they'd had just footage of his performances as a bonus on the dvd. David Essex plays his role well, but the character is very unlikable. Ringo is excellent.
Disappointing.......2003-09-05
I really wanted to enjoy this film. I've always been very passionate about music, and always wanted to be a musician, myself. I purchased this DVD due to the reviews here and elsewhere, but I have to say I was disappointed.
The film is long..and boring. It is not a rock and roll film, per se. I was expecting that mid-way through the film, the character of Jim will have started a rock band and have played a major role in helping to bring about the British Invasion. Not so. This is just a story about a directionless young man who quits school, gets seasonal jobs to support himself, engages in cheap sex, watches (and does nothing) as his friend Mike (Ringo) gets beaten up by customers, comes home after two years, marries and has a kid, then leaves them and everyone else to embark on his rock and roll dream. END OF PICTURE.
The music is great and the film DOES have potential. But I think it would have been better served to have half of the movie reflect Jim's disillusionment and aimlessness, and the other half reflect what happened as a result of this. As it stands, watching this film is like going to the theatre, and having to leave just as the movie starts. You never get to see what becomes of Jim as he embraces his new-found "freedom". For that, I guess you have to see the sequel they mention.
I love David Essex in this movie. He's very cute and a good actor. Disappointing, however, was his character. He's not a very sympathetic "bloke"; rather, he's self-absorbed, deceitful and a cheat..and certainly not anyone you can depend upon in your time of need.
Ringo does a great turn and it's interesting to see him in this context. I am a big Beatle fan, and I enjoyed seeing him in something different and stretching his obvious acting abilities.
That said, I think this movie could have been much better. To add insult to injury, they listed "Rock On" as being in the movie, but nowhere do you hear it played in the film. Perhaps it was in the sequel, but then the makers of this film should not have deceived the public into thinking it is heard in the film, because it isn't.
Maybe a second viewing of this film will put things in better perspective for me, but for now, this is my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Customer Reviews:
Great Robert Patrick flick!.......2007-02-09
Wow, I was taken back by this movie. I have never heard of it before, and I'm a big fan of Robert Patrick. I had to check it out. He is in almost every single scene and Jennifer Esposito is also exceptionally good in this movie. It has some really good twists, and it's kind of like an "I gotcha" type of ending. This is a definate check out if your a fan of Robert Patrick.
4 Stars for the move, 5 Stars for Robert Patrick.......2005-10-15
I was quite surprised by this movie - I never heard of it before, and going thru the movie section of the TV guide, decided to tape it since I saw it had Robert Patrick...I forgot I had it until several months later, and started watching it one morning while I was getting ready for work. I got so involved in it I was late! Some things are really weird, in a funny sort of way, but the end total took me off guard. Not an Oscar winner, but if you like Robert Patrick, this is a definite buy.
Cool old-fashioned B-flick........2005-02-11
Gritty business. Very entertaining. Low Budget. No flashy stuff. Sexy leading lady, good character actors. Parched-out desert locales. Cryptic but effective script with plenty of good twists.
This is the kind of movie John Payne made when he switched from playing handsome singing A-leads to laconic tough guys back in the 1950s. Kansas City Confidential, for example. Later on Lance Hendricksen did a lot of good stuff like this. Maybe Robert Patrick is the new LH.
What more could you ask for.
Well Worth Checking Out!!!!!!!!.......2004-08-24
I'll be honest. What got me watching this movie in the first place? Well, I was flipping channels and caught a quick glimpse of Jennifer Espinito, Just as if she were standing on the side of the highway hitchiking, and I slammed on the brakes to stop and pick her up, my channel surfing stopped dead right there!!!!
Not expecting a hell of alot from a movie she were starring in, I decided to check a bit of it out, since I was lucky enough to catch it right at the beginning of the movie.
To my pleasant surprise my interest was grabbed and held right from the start. The storyline seemed interesting enough, the acting very good, and it truly just kept getting better, and more interesting, and entertaining.
Robert patrick and Jennifer Espinito had great chemistery throughout the movie. Being a movie you've never heard of, you'd figure, or expect it to end up being a movie that gets to hard to believe. Though this movie seemed as if it were going to go that way, they could not have wrapped it up better.
as the credits begin rolling, you'll find yourself sitting there, eyebrows raised, and saying out loud "That was a really great movie!"
IT WAS! AND IT IS WELL WORTH CHECKING OUT!!!!
Extremely slow... Utterly horrible movie.......2003-05-13
I honestly can't believe that Robert Patrick wasted his time on this piece of [junk] movie. Ugh! One of the worst movies I've seen in quite a while.

Don't waste your money...........2005-08-10
I bought this dvd about a year after it came out. Why??? I don't know what the hell I was thinking. Her videos are uninteresting. She can't dance worth sh-t. She has the vocal ability of a wet mop. Her "Live" performance was wonderful to watch--on mute. Sorry baby girl, but YOU AIN'T GOT A DAMN THING ON INDIA!!!!! .
I Love You Brenda K Starr.......2005-01-26
Hey this is a wicked dvd, I would recomend it to anybody who likes her music. This dvd has all her salsa music. But I say this dvd it's too short. At least it could of be 1 hour and 45 minutes but it is 1 hour this dvd. Yes I agree too bad it did not have sub-titles. But still Brenda I still love ya. Well Brenda I hope you are reading this, please come to Canada in Toronto Ontario and have a concert.
I Love You Brenda K Starr.......2004-09-21
I want to say as a loyal fan of Brenda K. Starr this cd is amazing. I say it has all the good videos I like. I got to admit it, It is too bad it does not have the sub titles. There is an interview of her (In Spanish, It would of help the people, what is the interview about with sub titles in English, Spanish French) For me I have no problem I understand Spanish. Brenda I want to say I still love you. Please come to Toronto Canada for a lovely concert soon.
extraordinary.......2003-09-26
This was a great DVD, Brenda K. Starr is my idol and I just love the way that she sings I still believe (Salsa style),, she is so energized and every time that I see her perform she is just great! I look forward to her next CD.
disappointing.......2003-06-18
Although I am a fan of Brenda K. Starr's work I have to say this DVD is very disappointing. There are no special features, the interviews with Brenda K. Starr between each video don't have subtitles so unless you speak her language you will have no idea what she is talking about.
Also, the singles featured in this package are sung in Spanish. None of her American hits are here - I was hoping for the videos for "What You See Is What You Get", "I Still Believe" and "Breakfast In Bed". There is a version of "I Still Believe" on this DVD, but unfortunately not the original. It's some jazzed up salsa version which is nowhere near as beautiful as the original.
Overall a very disappointing DVD. Looks like it was rush-released.

Description
Troma studio heads Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz made their directing team debut with this hilarious, raunchy comedy about a women's softball team where anything goes! It's a wild battle of the sexes as the "World Series of Laughs" heats up on and off the softball field. In the small town of Springborn the local all-male baseball team, The Beavers, celebrates each victory by bedding their wives, sweethearts and casual dates. Tired of this chauvinistic treatment, rebellious Samantha (Jenni Hetrick) organizes an all-girl team, the Beaverettes. She forces a battle of the sexes on the baseball diamond, pitting her buxom teammates against the dirty-playing Beavers. As part of Troma Team Video's "Before There Was Toxie Series," Squeeze play breaks all the rules and predates the sexy comedies that would follow for years to come. The first of it's kind, Squeeze Play celebrates America's two favorite pastimes, playing ball and balling! This DVD comes loaded with an intro and directors' commentary and production interviews.
Customer Reviews:
THE SINGLE GREATEST MOVIE EVER !!!.......2001-11-14
Llyod Kaufman hit the nail on the head with this one. Sure through the years others have tried to make other baseball comedies like that one with Madonna or that Keven Costner (did you know Troma got Costner started in Sizzle Beach)one or that one that just came out this year. But they all are dirt on this movies coattails. I mean none of those inferior imitations have a baseball getting stuck in the crack of someones butt, how can they even compare!
Boob-a-riffic!.......2001-07-23
There are certain works which transcend aesthetic criticism and become cultural signifiers, archetypal embodyments of the moment that produced them. As American cultural hegemony reached its apotheosis and began to break like a great salty wave, depositing encrustations across the littoral zone of history, a sulbime new art form frothed forth - the 70's boob movie.
Any serious student of this genre would have to brand this movie as one of its most distinguished emanations. The plot - is not important. What is important is that the director of this movie, in a moment of auteurial inspiration, was inspired to include a scene in which a man exclaims "I love you!" to the (authentically) buxom object of his affections and immediately places his head between her breasts and makes a very loud farty sound by pressing them together and blowing.
dumb.......2000-11-18
Another Troma trauma from the worls cheapest movie studio, a proundly dumb comedy that transfers the battle of the sexes to a softball field. Strictly for the couchbound whose remote controls are broken
one of troma's best.......1999-09-05
this film is very funny and a must for troma fans. of course,i'ts no toxic avenger or nuke em high.
