Along with Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow launched a new fusion of comedy and kung fu. And it's easy to see why Snake has been so popular--it's easily the most engaging of Jackie Chan's early films. Everyone abuses and humiliates a downtrodden orphan (Chan) until he befriends an old man, who turns out to be the last master of the "snake fist" fighting style. Jackie becomes the old man's student and finds himself in battle with the master of the "eagle's claw" style, who has vowed to destroy the snake fist clan. Though these plot elements are familiar stuff, they're all executed with outstanding verve; the performances, the fight choreography, and even the obligatory training sequence are unusually complex and well filmed. Jackie is in top form and coming into his own as a star. --Bret Fetzer

1 of The Greatest Kung Fu Movies Ever Made!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-15
I caught this movie on comcast demand in the( free movies ) section for the first time in over 12 years. I always loved this movie but never could remember the title. If you truely a Jackie Chan fan and havent seen this movie I recommend that yoy check out this one I promise you'll want too see it again and again.], it's well worth at least $15 bucks max. This movie has all the ingredents that a kung fu masterpiece should have. My two favorite scences are the fight between a real Corba Snake and The House Cat, I wouldn't spoil the conclusion so you'll have to see for yourself. And the other scence OF COURSE IS THE FINAL BATTLE IT'S AT LEAST A GOOD 10 MINS AND YOU'LL ENJOY EVERY BIT OF IT ONE OF THE BEST FINAL BATTLES I'VE IN A KUNG FU MOVIE JACKIE LOSES HIS TOP FRONT TEETH...LOL!!!!!
ALSO CHECK OUT THESE GREAT TITLES
01.SNAKE IN MONKEYS SHADOW -( 4.0 STARS )
02.DRUNKEN MASTER -( 4.0 STARS )
03.THE YOUNG MASTER -( 4.0 STARS )
04.NINJA IN THE DRAGONS DEN -( 4.0 STARS )
05.LEGEND OF A FIGHTER -( 4.0 STARS )
Old Skool" Kung Fu!1.......2006-06-10
This flick is definately one of Jackie Chan's finest performance. I must have checked out this flick more than 5 times,,and can't seemed to get enough of it,,,I also though like usual Kwan Jung lee (Silvewr Fox)like always did a stellar performance,,,,,,,this is must have for the collection!!
THE MOVIE THAT MADE A STAR OUT OF A LOT OF PEOPLE.......2006-03-08
Just to name a couple
1.)Jackie Chan
2.)Simon Yuen(woo-pings dad)
I think that this movie is really better than drunken master.
Around 99% of kungfu fans no at leat of Hwang Jang Lee. The kickmaster. He has a scene where he jumps up and manages to land 6 kicks on Jackie by the time he lands. I rewound this for OVER AN HOUR. You are also getting one of the better performances of Dean Shek, and Roy Horan, and whatever the name is of the guy who replace don wong in secret rivals two. They really make this guy out to be a badass in this.
Now to actually talk about the movie. Jackie is an orphan who was taken into martial arts school. Since he is so dumb he has to be the cleaning boy instead of practicing the MA. Well he ends up helping out an old man from getting beat up. The old man realizes the kid has a good heart but can't fight so he helps him train. He trains him in the snake style. Jackie then meets a man who says he is a colleague of the old man, jackie doesn't believe him so tests him, and this is one of my favorite fights of all time. Hwang Jang Lee HONESTLY scared the shi* out of me in this movie. Just looking at him is scary enough, but with how fast he moves and the power in his kicks, he can be compared to no one. I don't want to give away the rest of this movie, but the rest of it is very good, and unforunately the final fight scene was only average. This is an experiment by Woo-ping that he perfected in drunken master.
Chan's first flick that boost him to stardom.......2006-02-10
This is a decent flick of Jackie Chan's early stuff. Jackie had a good share of unsuccessful films with Lo Wei, because he didn't use Jackie Chan to the fullest. Lo also tried to make Jackie Chan another Bruce Lee. But this is his Jackie's first collaboration with Yuen Woo Ping (the choreographer from The Matrix triology, Kill Bill Volumes 1 & 2, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Unleased), and he introduced Jackie to the genre of kung-fu comedy.
This DVD (the Columbian Tristar version) is the second-best version out there. This version, however, cuts out a brief fight between a cat and a snake (this fight scene is important to the plot). To get the full story, buy the Mei Ah version, or the Hong Kong version.
Terrible Quality.......2006-01-29
This is my favorite Jackie Chan movie of all time, and unfortunately I was trying to save a few dollars by buying the cheaper one, big mistake! This thing will hardly play at all, very poor quality image. It is not worth the disk it's on. Now I have to get the remastered one anyway, sigh. Lesson learned.

The Duke Did It First!..........2005-11-19
"Shadow Of The Eagle"(1932)
Okay, we all love the scene in "North By Northwest" in which Cary Grant is being chased across a field by the crop duster plane. It is a nail biting, edge of your seat scene, and we want to yell, "Look out Cary, it's coming back at you!" I would never take anything away from that class act, but fans of The Duke, may remember that he did it first about 27 years earlier, in this wonderful mystery/serial. And not only was he being chased by a stunt plane, but was carrying an injured woman in his strong arms at the same time!!! That's our guy, even early on, quite the hero.
"Shadow of the Eagle" is a real treat for John Wayne fans. It's runs about 3 hours, and the action and adventure, the mystery and suspense is non stop. Wayne plays Craig McCoy, a stunt pilot and is part of a traveling fair. When a mysterious pilot known as The Eagle", starts making murderous threats with sky-writing, our guy jumps into action to try and find this villain. Suspect everyone, suspect no one, as for 3 hours, the upper hand and evidence jumps back and forth between the bad guys and the good guys. Keep in mind this was an originally a 12 chapter serial, so each chapter may be considered a kind of cliff hanger.
What is most fun about the story is that all the performers of the traveling fair get involved in one way or another. Some are prime suspects(for a while), others, like the strong man, and the ventriloquist use their talents to help catch the criminal.
This film can be found on a DVD released by Platinum Disc(who do all those fun Great American Westerns). Although it starts out a little scratchy, I was very surprised by the quality of both the sound and the picture. It didn't get a total restoration, but a very decent view, and the film plays completely through with no breaks between the chapters. There are 3 other films of Wayne's included on this DVD. "Rainbow Valley", "His Private Secretary", and "Paradise Canyon", all from the 30's, and they do show their age). The DVD is simply called John Wayne" Enter B0001I2C4I into the DVD search and it will take you there, if you are interested in it. It is also part of a 2 pack John Wayne collection(9 films in total)Enter B0001OGVBM. So lots of choices here.
Witness the early beginnings of a legend in action...and enjoy!....Laurie
okay, but not as good as Marengo Films previous version.......2005-08-25
Marengo Films decided to add back in the chapter stops to this latest version of 'Shadow Of The Eagle', and honestly, I have no idea why. What was a unique move on their part by eliminating the repetitive summaries between each chapter, is now back again...adding an unnecessary 40 minutes more to the viewing time. I'm glad I still have the original version they put out, as this version is just like every other one out there on the market. It's a shame they never put out 'The Hurricane Express' and 'The Three Musketeers' serials without the summary chapters as well. The first version of Marengo Films 'Eagle' is the one that really soars!
THE NEW IMPROVED PRISTINE VERSION HAS ARRIVED.......2004-12-25
MARENGO FILMS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE NEW VERSION OF THE SHADOW OF THE EAGLE IS AVAILABLE NOW. THE COMPANY RE-MASTERED THE FILM INTO CHAPTER FORMAT IN ADDITION THEY DID ANOTHER SOUND DESIGN, COLOR CORRECTIONS AND NEW CHAPTER CARDS. THIS DVD IS NOW THE BEST VERSION OF THIS SERIAL ON THE MARKET.
A classic John Wayne.......2003-06-22
It is great to see John Wayne in the early years . It was both funny and action packed and comsidering it was 70 years ago it was of a great quality .

Standard Wayne Output.......2006-12-25
I'm a big fan of John Wayne and have now seen roughly 115 of his roughly 152 movies thanks to the additional four that I saw in this collection. It's no secret that John Wayne became a greater actor beginning with his role in "Stagecoach". His second time around with John Ford turned him from a Saturday afternoon B movie star to an actor worthy of the feature film. Wayne wasn't bad in the sort of roles that this collection featured. Indeed, he was the able rival of the likes of Hopalong Cassidy and Gene Autry (without the singing). He might have retired into a status of a hero to pre-teen boys of a former generation.
Watching these movies is a reminder of that screen persona he had before stardom. It's actually a pretty good collection with a couple of Westerns, a non-Westrern romance, and the complete serial of "Shadow of the Eagle". It was "Shadow of the Eagle" that impressed me the most although not necessarily in a positive light. I had previously seen the first 4 of 14 chapters of Wayne's "The Three Musketeers". In the DVD I watched, each episode was introduced the way the audience would have seen it at the time; the introduction with the cast and characters, a recap of the story to date, and completing the episode with a cliffhanging situation. In the presentation of "Shadow of the Eagle" everything was run together as though it were an uninterrupted movie. Too bad, because, although I could generally tell where each segment might have ended, I was able to see the resolution to the crisis immediately appear on the screen. It made for one LONG movie. In the abbreviated version of "The Three Musketeers" I grew tired of the repeated intros. In "Shadow of the Eagle" I became confused by everything happening so fast. I couldn't tell who were the good guys and the bad guys (partly because that's what the writer wanted, partly because they all looked and acted alike). I wondered how many times our hero could have been knocked cold and still get out of bed and chase the bad guys. I'm glad I had the opportunity to understand this and, hopefully, come to appreciate that these hastily-made productions were meant to be seen one at a time and only on a weekly basis. All in all, though, I'd still probably rate it as better than "Rio Lobo".
Includes The Entire "Shadow Of The Eagle" serial.......2005-11-17
This DVD is simply called JOHN WAYNE. It may be purchased on it's own, or in a 2 pack with the Great American Western Vol 24(5 Wayne Westerns from the 30's).That pack is under the title "John Wayne/Great American Westerns Vo". If you copy and paste or enter that title in the DVD search you will find it.It is part of the Platinum Disc series, although the studio listed in the buying info here is Echo Bridge Home Ent.(I'm not sure if they are one in the same, but this is a Platinum disc, and I entered the code # from the back of the package to get here.)
This DVD contains 4 films starring a very young John Wayne. Two are Western/Mystery, One is a Romantic/Comedy, and last and worth the price of admission all by itself, the entire mystery/suspense serial from 1932 "Shadow of the Eagle", which runs over 3 hours by itself.
These films are all from the early thirties. They are so old that even Gabby Hayes looks young(well young for Gabby, anyway). He's a great sidekick to Wayne in "Rainbow Valley" from 1935 The Duke plays a secret agent assigned by the government to break up a gang of bad guys, who will stop at nothing to get what they want...gold mines!
The other Western, "Paradise Canyon"(1935) is another mystery. Once again Our guy is a covert agent trying to track down a band of con men. A traveling medicine show may lead him to the prime suspects.Lots of great action scenes, suspense and stunts.
"His Private Secretary"(1933), has Wayne as the rich playboy who thinks of nothing but girls, girls girls!. His Father though decides to put him to work. It is then he meets the girl of his dreams(really, this time) and must prove himself worthy of her. Lots of fun! A very different look at The Duke! Evelyn Knapp co-stars and gets top billing over Wayne.
These three films all show there age, with sratches and dirt, but for the John Wayne fan, a real treat(and who can beat this price?).Early signs of what was about to become a legend are witnessed in these films. And watch out for that famous punch of his! They all run an hour or less.
Next up is something really special for fans. "The Shadow of the Eagle", runs complete, with no breaks between the chapters of this 12 part serial. For 3 hours, Craig McCoy(Wayne), a stunt pilot, will try to solve the mystery of who is The Eagle. Whos has been flying a skywriting plane and making threats in the sky. The upper hand goes back and forth throughout, and nearly everyone is suspect at different points. McCoy gets help from the traveling fair he is part of. Everyone from the ventriliquist to the strong man will help solve the case. It's a real nail-biter! Fans will love this stuff.
I was surprised that this film looked so good. It starts off pretty scratchy and grainy, but for the most part, had a nice picture, and very good sound.
All the films are on one side(no need to flip) and each film has about scene selection options. If you are looking for pristine transfers of these oldies, pass this one by.
Spend some time with the Duke, In the saddle, In a car, and in the air!....Laurie
