In the vastly overrated 1998 book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, author Peter Biskind puts the blame for Hollywood's blockbuster mentality at least partially on Steven Spielberg's box-office success with this adaptation of Peter Benchley's bestselling novel. But you can't blame Spielberg for making a terrific movie, which Jaws definitely is. The story of a Long Island town whose summer tourist business is suddenly threatened by great-white-shark attacks on humans bypasses the potboiler trappings of Benchley's book and goes straight for the jugular with beautifully crafted, crowd-pleasing sequences of action and suspense supported by a trio of terrific performances by Roy Scheider (as the local sheriff), Richard Dreyfuss (as a shark specialist), and particularly Robert Shaw (as the old fisherman who offers to hunt the shark down). The sequences on Shaw's boat--as the three of them realize that in fact the shark is hunting them--are what entertaining moviemaking is all about. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Jaws.......2007-07-03

Still under age 30 when released, wunderkind director Spielberg hit the big time with this runaway box-office hit, based on Peter Benchley's novel. John Williams's unforgettable score and Spielberg's clever mounting of suspense recall the best of Hitchcock, and Scheider, Dreyfuss and Shaw make up an unlikely but appealing trio of protagonists. What "Psycho" did for the shower, "Jaws" does for the ocean. Be sure to get the new 30th Anniversary edition- the movie looks flawless.

5 out of 5 stars When you think of a great horror film, you think of Jaws........2007-06-02

In 1975 one of the greatest horror films of all time was created, and is one of Steven Spielberg's masterpieces. This film was named Jaws. Of course, Jaws was a very scary film of it's time, and made people hesitate to go in the water. Nowadays, however, Jaws isn't near as scary or gory as some of today's newer (and often times bad) horror movies. I've heard many people giving bad reviews on Jaws. I can't recall how many times I've heard, "This movie isn't scary at all, the shark doesn't look real, the blood looks like fruit punch, that movie is horrible" as you can see, these people often don't find time to appreciate the classics and focus more on today's new movies. Now I'm not saying I don't appreciate today's movies. In fact, I happen to be a big fan of Pirates of the Carribean, Lord of the Rings, and sometimes Spiderman and Star Wars. However, I also find time to appreciate older movies such as Spaceballs, Jaws, and various Tom Hanks movies (Some new and some old). But anyways, back to Jaws. As I've said so far, Jaws is a truly classic movie and has had it's lines and music that has gone down in history. Some examles are the dah dah, dah dah, dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah (You get the idea) tune. And when Brody finally kills Jaws at the end of the movie with his famous line... "Smile you son of a BANG!!!" and pulls the trigger on the oversized Great White. Jaws exploded when this happened because an air tank had been shoved into him. Other moments such as the "get pulled under water and blood shoots up" have put Jaws alongside 5-star movies such as The Exorcist. Every parent must make their kid watch this movie someday! However, I must tell you that many other wanna be Jaws movies have been made, and I probably wouldn't suggest watching them unless the review is good. All I can say is that Jaws started the "killer shark" franchise and redefined the meaning of horror (Well, in 1975 it did). But Jaws is still a great movie today, and is one of (maybe the best) horror movies of all time. WATCH IT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars If there is one bad thing that can be said about this film, it's that it caused the great white shark's population to plummet.......2007-05-29

When I was much younger I could watch Jaws again and again. I don't know how many Friday nights I spent rewatching Jaws but there must have been many. That tone, dah-dah dah-dah, was ingrained in my mind. Even though I knew exactly what would happen my adrenaline would always rise during certain parts of the film (the severed head, the girl being tossed around during the opening sequence, and Chief Brody's last desperate attempt to kill the monster shark, etc.) This is essentially a perfect film where the characters are developed enough so that we care about them when they are put in peril.

Bravo recently made a television program about "100 scariest" movies ever made and it ranked Jaws #1, putting it ahead of movies like Alien (#2), The Excorcist (#3), and Psycho (#4). While many people would disagree that this is the scariest movie ever made, Jaws makes it to virtually everyone's scariest top 10 list. You cannot possibly call yourself a horror film buff without owning this.

But before you buy this, just one note of caution: Don't take this film too seriously. The one sad thing about this film is that it was so effectively scary that it led to the deaths of many great whites around the world by ignorant people who viewed them as mindless killers. In reality, these creatures do not actively seek to kill humans. Most hate the taste of our bony bodies and, of the few times they do attack humans, it's usually because they mistake them for sea lions which they like to eat.

With that in mind, sit back, relax and get ready to watch the greatest shark movie ever made.

Ushering in the age of the inferior sequel, Jaws 2 was essentially a license to print money. Indeed, the film did very well despite blatantly replicating the plot of Steven Spielberg's original, though to lesser effect. Roy Scheider returns as Martin Brody, sheriff of the small island town of Amity. Just as the beachside resort is rebounding from the previous movie's shark attacks, another great white is snacking on divers and water-skiers. Naturally, the town fathers don't want to confront reality and choose to proceed with a lucrative sailing regatta, resulting in a grisly loss of life. Besides the fact that director Jeannot Szwarc takes an impersonal, workaday approach to the film, Jaws 2 manages to be both stylistically flat and openly cynical about its commercial intentions. Of chief interest here is Scheider's performance, which wisely reflects the emotional fallout from Brody's last trauma in his obsessive behavior here. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Being "best of 'Jaws' Sequels ain't much to brag about. This movie stinks........2007-05-29

I may not have expected the midas touch of the original in "Jaws 2," but I did expect some quality. I didn't think the "Jaws" brand name would be sold out so cheaply. But it was when it allowed itself to be applied to this stinker. Not only is the writing lousy, the characters are shallow at best, including municipal leaders who conveniently have very short memories as they relive the past and fall perfectly in line with the unimaginative story line. The Brody's themselves seem to have short memories, but they merely symbolize the rest of the town who, despite some awfully familiar clues, jump in and out of the water with wreckless abandon w/o giving the possibility of a shark even a remote consideration. And the shark itself takes on something of a slasher personna in its predatory behavior in the way it chooses its prey. Not to mention how unlike in the original, this shark plays to the camera and takes on un-shark like characteristics, expanding a little more on the original sharks acrobatics. All this sequel needs (as well as the 3rd and 4th installments) is a hockey mask for the shark and the creativity for the plot line would be complete. This may be the best of the "Jaws" sequels, but that's like saying the Gremlin was GMC's best car.

3 out of 5 stars The only good sequel in the "JAWS" franchise.......2007-05-28

Once the music starts you know your in for a first class ride of the same caliber and quality as the original. John Williams does an excellent original score for the sequel setting the tone right off the bat. Really has some genuwine, jump outta your seat shocks and is overall very enjoyable and suspensful. Roy Scheider returns as Sherriff Brody and is just as good as he was in the first, sinking his teeth into the role and tearin' it up, much like the title character.
If your lookin for a scary shark movie, stick with the best("JAWS" and "JAWS2") and forget the rest.

3 out of 5 stars It's not as good as the original Jaws. But, then again, it's not as bad as Jaws the Revenge.......2007-04-23

Apparently, lightning can strike in the same place twice. And giant sharks can go on a rampange in the same place twice. That's what the people who made this movie expect you to believe. And so the only way to enjoy this film is not to take it too seriously.

I wish that they didn't make this movie. The original was so perfect that any subsequent movie could only diminish the great beast's reputation. But while this movie looks crappy compared to its original, it looks brilliant and competent compared to the two sequels that would follow it.

Anyone who hasn't seen this movie and gets it should not expect to be terrified. What made the first Jaws movie great is that we didn't actually see the shark until the very end whereas in this film we see it in the opening sequence. This takes away the mystery and the fear of the unknown but I guess by now the director figured everyone knew what the shark would look like anyways. The only difference in how this shark looks is that in the early part of the movie the shark gets burned on a side of its face which does give it a cool kind of look. And how the shark is killed in this film is almost as clever as in the original.

Again, don't expect to be terrified. This movie is a far better action/adventure story than a horror film. Here are my rankings of the four Jaws movies:

Jaws: 5 stars.
Jaws 2: 3 stars.
Jaws 3: 2 stars.
Jaws the Revenge: 1 and 1/2 stars.

For most people this film will be a waste of time. Maybe it is worth a rent but you should only buy it if you are a hard core Jaws fan.

4 out of 5 stars Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water ..........2007-04-06

JAWS II
Well, living in New England you would never expect to see a shark along the beach ...once maybe, but twice ...I don't think so. But thanks to the producers of Hollywood this second film has a lot of charm as the first.
In fact I watched Jaws I and Jaws II back to back and I thought they were both about the same caliber.
So if you liked the first movie, you'll like the second. Beyond this, the rest of the JAWS series was aweful.

3 out of 5 stars THE SHARK DELIVERS THE GOODS.......2007-03-16

It has been said so many times before..."How could a sequel possibly live up to the original?"....it can't! Especially since Jaws is one of those flukes. It just happened to turn out great, because of some unforseen trouble with the fake shark and a very clever young directer. Jaws 2 isn't a bad movie and could have been much worse! The shark scenes deliver because we have all been severely traumatized from the the first film., but Dreyfuss and Shaw are sorely missed on land. I still think it is worth owning if you are a fan of the first,( who isn't?) but the buck stops here! The 3rd and 4th installments are garbage! The DVD transfer is very good.

2 out of 5 stars Might one day be in 3D for DVD..........2007-05-02

I saw this in the theater at age 12 and again numerous times on video. The main reason that this movie has not been released in a 3D format for home video, is that the movie was released in a polarized 3D format, rather than the old red/green or red/blue format that works on television sets. One lens in the movie glasses was polarized vertically and the other horizontally (a la Universal and Disney theme-park 3D movies). This particular effect is currently impossible to re-create even on HD televisions because of the horizontal scanning that makes the tv images. It could be converted into a red/green format for DVD, but Universal is unlikely to shell out the money for a conversion, which would likely take over a year of labor by an FX team. Also, that's assuming that the Left and Right film masters still exist as seperate films. Even at age 12 in 1983, I was unimpressed by much of the film, one redeeming factor being that the shark was so darn huge [35 ft]. I didn't like the use of stop-motion near the end, something Spielberg avoided at all costs in the original. Holding out for the slim chance of a Red/Green 3D conversion before I buy, as I have all the others on DVD.

2 out of 5 stars This movie put the Jaws franchise on life-support.......2007-04-23

This is the point where the Jaws movies officially lost its credibility. It was already pretty shaky after Jaws 2 but this is the moment when the series jumped shark (no pun intended). Through herculian efforts, I convinced myself that what happened in Jaws 2 was possible because maybe the shark in the first one had a girlfriend/boyfriend shark nearby. But a supermassive great white terrorizing the Brody family for a third time?

It's worth noting that this film probably contains a scene or two that have arguably the worst special effects of the whole Jaws series (including Jaws the Revenge). The one that comes to mind is when the shark breaks through the glass and floods the place in the underwater city at the end of the movie. It is not just bad, it is breathtakingly bad. When the shark hits the glass it comes to a complete stop even though the glass it hits has just been shattered into tiny pieces. Imagine throwing a baseball at a window causing it to completely shatter but the ball miraculously does not go through the window. That's the logic that this movie expects you to believe.

One of the few nice things I can say about this movie is that it could have been worse (as Jaws the Revenge proved). And there were some things that I liked: I thought the little (by its standards) baby great white was cute and the dolphins were awesome. But these small elements that I enjoyed are few and far between.

I'll admit that when I was young I must have watched this movie many times. But now that I'm older I've regretted spending so much time watching these movies that made money JUST by their title and little else. They're a waste of time and money and I strongly urge anyone seriously considering buying this to look elsewhere. Stay out of the water and stay away from this.

4 out of 5 stars Jaws 3 was much better than Jaws 2.......2007-04-23

I'm surprised by the number of bad reviews posted here for Jaws 3. I've seen all of the Jaws movies many times and I my favorites are Jaws and Jaws 3. I thought Jaws 2 and Jaws Revenge were unbelievably stupid. Face it, the last half of Jaws 2 is basically just a bunch of screaming kids. Jaws 3 is entertaining just by the fact that it's filmed at Seaworld. It has many scary scenes and some cool effects. Namely, the part of the movie showing an underwater glass bottom walk-way of the theme park where people are walking and sharks are lurking nearby.

1 out of 5 stars The shark jumped the shark........2007-04-06

This is not worth writing about. Dennis Quaid is a good actor, but a poor choice of movie to be associated with.
If you want to watch a bad movie, then watch this one.

1 out of 5 stars This movie fails!.......2007-03-06

1,2, and 4 are best leave out 3. Why is the title named Jaws 3-D? Where are the 3-D glasses? I mean the effects are just horrible. I enjoy the rest of the series but this one is just boring. They should re-release this movie in theater with 3-D glasses and I would probably give this movie a good rating but for now this movie just sucks.

1 out of 5 stars Consider seeing this film only if you think that believable scripts, good special effects, and originality are overrated.......2007-05-13

It's no accident that there never was another "Jaws" movie after Jaws the Revenge. Even the movie Deep Blue tried hard to avoid being thought of as Jaws 5. Why is that?

Probably because this sorry piece of filming terminated the giant shark in more ways than one. It's NO exaggeration, whatsoever, to say that this film works better as an unintentional comedy than as a horror/science-fiction movie.

If you are thinking of renting or, heaven forbid, buying this movie I will refer you to something that lambasts this movie better than I can. Do a you tube search for "richard jeni jaws 4" and you'll find a short entertaining video that gives Jaws the Revenge a proper mockery. A more accurate title would be Jaws the Joke or Jaws the Ripoff.

Here are my rankings of the Jaws movies:

Jaws: 5 stars (only one worth owning, get it)
Jaws 2: 3 stars (ehh, I guess there are worse things you could do with your time than seeing this inferior sequel)
Jaws 3: 2 stars (starting to get crappy)
Jaws the Ripoff: 1 star (only because you can't give 0 stars on Amazon)

1 out of 5 stars This time, it's bad! .......2007-03-14

I saw this movie on TV since there was nothing else on and I must say that I couldn't stop laughing. The movie is so bad, that it is a comedy! In the begining of this movie, they start off by saying that the events in Jaws 3 never happened (reason why it's called "Jaws: The Revenge" instead of Jaws 4) and that the sharks from the first two movies were the new sharks parents. So the shark follows the Brodys to kill them all! What a dumb plot you must think, but it gets even worse by the bad acting and action. In one scene the shark jumps out of the water and locks it's jaws on a plane! Come on, I bet the guy who wrote "Basic Instinct 2" could do a better job.

1 out of 5 stars This Got Made.......2006-12-22

I just saw the end of JAWS: THE REVENGE again on latenight cable TV--where it belongs--and I'm still stunned by the incredible lameness of every aspect of this movie. For everyone who quibbles about the unlikelihood of finding a Great White in the warm waters of the Bahamas: this shark also roars. Like a lion or something. A roaring shark. You read that right.

The filmmakers also keep cutting shots from the original JAWS into the climax. As a reminder that there was actually a good film at one time here? A distraction from how horrible this one is?

They paid Michael Caine enough to be in this stink bomb--but obviously not enough to wear a wet shirt after climbing out of the ocean. His expressions often convey that he's there but you're lucky he's at least facing the camera.
Was there something better he could have been doing? Yes. Picking up his first Oscar for HANNAH AND HER SISTERS. But he missed the Oscars to be in JAWS: THE REVENGE. At least he went on national TV to admit that he did this movie because he had a home right there in the Bahamas (he even pointed at the house during the interview).

The demise of the roaring shark is a baffling, badly-edited violation of all of our natural laws and logic. Shark rises out of the water. Boat rams shark. Shark explodes. Boat explodes. Everyone survives, even the annoying Jamaican who got chewed up several minutes before. Roll footage clearly the same of the blown-up shark sinking from the original.
Wow. It's that bad.

The tag line for this movie was "This time it's personal."
They were right.
That studio's really got it in for us!

1 out of 5 stars What a crap!.......2006-10-02

Looks great but don't get trusted, this is the worst killer shark film ever! The shark looks so fake and during all the movie he only killed like 4 people and that's it. So please don't see this movie I'm warning you.

1 out of 5 stars Attack of the Roaring, Plastic, Killer Shark!!!.......2006-09-26

After a Great White shark kills her youngest son, the widowed Ellen Brody comes to the realization that the shark is after her and her loved ones. As ridiculous of this might sound, it turns out that she's right. The vengeful, grudge-holding fish follows the grieving woman along with her son, daugther-in-law and niece to the beautiful Bahamas, I guess to seek revenge? For what, you ask? I have no idea.

The scathing reviews this film has received from those who have watched it are justified because this film is unbearably bad. The film-makers thought that in order to make a JAWS sequel, the story must involve the Brody family. In JAWS 2, chief Brody battled another over-grown Great White and in JAWS 3, the Brody sons battled an even bigger shark in Florida's seaworld. In JAWS: THE REVENGE, the homicidal fish returns to torment the Brody's yet again. Talk about an unlucky family. What I do not understand is why is this shark after them? Didn't the shark die in the original film? Didn't the second shark "cross over" during the sequel's climax? Is this shark somehow related to the previous sharks; maybe a spouse or a sibling or a cousin? Maybe it wanted to avenge the murder of it's relatives? Maybe "Bruce" was somehow resurrected in a Jason Voorhees/Mike Myers kind of way and the scene ended up in the cutting room floor? Help?

Another intriguing factor in JAW: THE REVENGE is that the shark roars. Mighty "Bruce" roars just like the T-Rex in Jurassic park and if that wasn't enough, it can also jump out of the water and stand on its tail, kinda like Flipper. I was waiting for Michael Caine to throw it a Mackerel and ask it to do a back-flip. Speaking of Michael Caine, he gives the most annoying performance of his entire career.

All kidding aside, JAWS: THE REVENGE is definitely the worst film in the series and qualifies as probably one of the worst sequels ever made. The acting is not too bad (Michael Caine being the exception) and I have to give credit where credit is due because you can tell that Lorraine Gary and Lance Guest were taking their roles very seriously and it's a testament to their talents that they were able to keep a straight face throughout this film.

The film's horrible climax only adds insult to injury. After her niece was nearly eaten up by the hungry fish, Ms. Brody decides to seek and kill it by herself without any weapons of any kind whatsoever. What was she expecting to do, run the shark over with her boat?

There are 2 endings to this film, both equally bad. The original ending had "Bruce" being impaled by the Brody's boat. After the film's release and for the Video editions the ending was changed and had the beast mysteriously explode upon impact. They also had Mario Van Peebles' character miraculously come back from the dead which mean this installment has the lowest body count in the series.

From the lame plot to the lame, plastic roaring shark to Michael Caine's utterly charmless performance, JAWS:THE REVENGE is a travesty of the highest order. Not even the gorgeous Bahamas locale can save this laughably bad film.

At least Michael Caine got a house out of it. The viewer is not as lucky. Skip it and re-watch the original instead. 1 out of 5.

In the world's most shark-infested waters, an extreme team of divers attempt to swim with and photograph massive great white sharks without the protection of a cage. The team is marooned together for 9 days off a remote island in Mexico. Supplies are short and so are tempers, but these off-beat divers, who begin as strangers, must learn to band together if they are to survive an open water encounter with the great white. Led by Andre Hartman, a diver who admits he's scared to death of the sharks, John McKenney, a cameraman who worries he may not return to his family, and Cat Gennaro, a feisty ex-model turned diver who won't admit fear... the divers, one-by-one, will take turns in the water with up to six great white sharks at a time! Cameras follow the team under water and on board ship where the crew, led by hilarious "surfer-dude" paramedic Mike Hudson, and guitar-playing soundman Michael Gatt, along with a shark-diving decoy named "Bob" keep things interesting 24 hours a day. This is reality unlike you've ever seen it: no actors, no safety nets, and no cages. In GREAT WHITE SHARK: UNCAGED, the sharks are dangerous, and the fear is real.

    INTRODUCTION:
In the early seventies, a novel by Peter Benchley about shark attacks was fast becoming a best seller. Because of the book's success, it seemed only natural to turn it into a movie. And who better to direct it than legendary director Steven Spielberg? In 1975, after nearly two years of filming, the film version of the novel hit theaters - only to become the highest-grossing motion picture of all time (that is, until Star Wars beat the record in 1977.) In 1978 the sequel, Jaws 2 was released. And now both of the films have been combined in a value pack! Read on for my review of this set.

    BASIC PLOT:
The plot of the original Jaws is simple enough - shark attacks continue occuring off the coast of a New England resort town, and needless to say, this doesn't help tourism any. This is only made worse by the fact that the local mayor (Murray Hamilton) refuses to close the beaches, because he feels it would hurt tourism. After more of these attacks occur, the chief of police (Roy Schieder) decides something needs to be done. He, an expert marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss), and a veteran fisherman (Robert Shaw), set out to put an end to this shark's life once and for all. Jaws 2, released three years later, has a similar storyline. A few years have passed since the events of the first film. During a diving expedition to the wreckage of the Orca (Quint's boat from the first film), a shark attacks the divers. Police Chief Brody becomes convinced that another great white is lurking in the waters around Amity when he discovers a camera from the doomed diving expedition, a beached whale, and the remains of a woman. In a foolish attempt to get rid of what he thinks is the shark, he is fired from his job as police chief. Meanwhile, his two sons sneak off with some friends to go sailing - unaware of the shark that is lurking in the water beneath them, and is just waiting to strike.

    FILM OPINIONS:
Can anyone say "great movies"? I never would have thought films that are nearly thirty years old could have held together this well. Even to this day, the Jaws films remain favorites of many. Despite a number of hardships, Spielberg succeeded excellently in making Benchley's novel a movie. As other reviewes have stated, there are some differences between the film and the novel (the film lacks the novel's romantic subplot, Hooper survives the attack in the shark cage, Quint is eaten alive rather than dying the "Captain Ahab" death he dies in the book, the shark is blown up rather than dying from its wounds, etc.) Although many shots were shot with a fake shark, just about EVERY scene the film offers is believable. Perhaps the true attraction of this film is John Williams' score. Whenever this guy does the music for the movie, he does the job right (he also did the Star Wars films.) And, of course, his classic "shark theme" from this film became an instant classic. Combine this with some top-notch acting (especially on Shaw's part) and you've got one hell of a movie. Although Jaws 2 never quite gained the credibility of its predecessor, it was also an excellent film (I think it got a bad rap because the other two Jaws sequels were horrible.) In my opinion, the original Jaws is the superior film of the two featured, but Jaws 2 is also very good.

    DVD:
The guys at Universal really outdid themselves this time. In addition to tons of storyboard and production photographs for the first film, we also get production notes, a trivia game, shark facts, a "making of" featurette, hillarious outtakes, and the holy grail of all DVD extras - deleted scenes. One of the deleted scenes hints at the romantic subplot that the final version of the film omitted, and one of them features a battle amongst humans on the water to get the shark - and the reward money. Similar extras can be found on the Jaws 2 DVD. A little message to all the companies out there who transfer films to DVD - THESE ARE THE KIND OF BONUS FEATURES PEOPLE LIKE TO SEE!

    OVERALL:
I can't stress enough how excellent (and horrifying) these films are. Spielberg succeeded beautifully with the first film - and it certainly serves as a premonition to his future successes. Regardless of who you are, Jaws is a film you need to see at least once. And don't forget about Jaws 2! If you're not afraid of the water, these are the films that are likely to change your mind!
