Quick review for Quicksand........2006-10-16

This low budget drama/thriller was very average even though it has both Michael Kane and Michael Keaton it was still slightly dull and tedious. There were a few interesting parts that I thought were hilarious especially with Kane and the extremely bad acting from the rest of the cast so I guess it wasn't all that bad. The story was about Keaton's character who plays a bank employee who goes to France in order to investigate a bad transaction or transfer of money that appeared on his computer, he soon becomes a fall guy for the Russian mafia and some drug ring so he needs to prevent the bad guys from killing him as well as clearing his name from a murder he did not commit. If you like both these actors then you might be interested in this film but don't expect a high caliber thriller or something like that.

QUICKSAND is a formulaic, by the numbers thriller set in the world of corporate money laundering. Michael Keaton plays Martin Raike, a bank executive who goes to France to investigate the possibility of money laundering there. He meets a lovely CEO (Judith Godreche), who also introduces him to a has been action star (the ubiquitous Michael Caine). It isn't too long, though, that Keaton is set up to take the fall as the assassin of the crooked chief of police, and is on the run to prove his innocence. While the movie is certainly not a bad one, it would have been much better if there had been more of Caine in his delightful role as a has been actor. His scenes with Keaton are the only true energy in the picture and had there been more, QUICKSAND could have been a far more enjoyable film.

Not as good as I'd hoped.........2005-12-18

I really wanted to enjoy this crime thriller because it starred two of my favorite actors, Michael Keaton and Michael Kaine, but as much as I tried to be objective, this one didn't shine for me. The story never came together well because the directing and editing was simply awful. Even the star power of Keaton and Kaine couldn't overcome the lousy directing. The scenes were chopped and stapled together with impunity.

This film had the potential to be a success. It had a reasonably well written script and the right actors to play the parts. It's a shame it didn't turn out that way. I own the DVD, but it's one I won't be watching again any time soon.

Neat Flick!!.......2005-06-02

It seems that not alot of people have watched this little gem of a film, by the number of reviews that it has...but I have to say, that with the likes of Michael Keaton and Michael Caine, this film delivered a great action movie!!! The script was in a nice tight package, and the actors took the parts well. It was one of those films that made me wonder what was going to happen next.

A tightly directed and acted thriller.......2004-06-07

QUICKSAND is a terrific action drama that wears a good script well acted by a strong cast headed by Michael Keaton and Michael Caine and well directed by fully in-control Director John Mackenzie. The topic of money laundering is particularly timely at this point in our history so gathering information about the ins and outs of this type of scam is apropos. Michael Keaton is an obsessive-compulsive American investigator sent to France in his role as investigator and ends up being setup as an accused assassin. He is forced into escape and into hiding until he uncovers the truth about the company under investigation (actually a porn industry) and with the help of a has-been actor (played superlatively by Michael Caine) finds a way out. The mechanisms for this good guy-bad guy chase and intrigue make for edge-of-the seat suspense. Not a great movie but certainly one of the better intrigue films greatly enhanced by a strong cast of supporting actors in excellent cameo roles. Recommended.

Yeah, Matt was a great guy, but Baz put the Skids on the map. Unfortunately, he's a god in his own mind and pretty much destroyed the band from the inside all by himself. Shades of Van Halen...... As a fan, I agree that he is the voice of Skid Row, but having known the guys personally for over 20 years, I would never wish the pain they went through trying to deal with Baz on anyone. Better to limp along and enjoy life that do deal with that Bazzhole...............

This is one of the very worst movies I have ever watched. I am surprised the US Marine Corps has not sued the producers and studio for defamation of character. Plus, the actors can't act and the story author can't write.

This has to be one of the worst movies in years. I am surprised the US Marine Corp doesn't sue for defamation of character. They should have hired someone that knew something about military unifroms, insignia, customs and courtesies, bases, and on and on. And saying that, they should have hired actors and writers too.

The film quality is OK and it is a good 3 piece selection. The problem I have is the Vendor, Caiman.com. The DVD skips and appears corrupted in spots and after 3 emails to Caiman's "automated" customer service link, claire@caiman.com., I've received no reply on my issue. My recommendation is not to buy from Caiman.com as they are unresponsive and apparently no one is on board to help, should there be an issue. I've had good success with MovieWeb and Alphacraze.

Plebian Film Noir. .......2007-03-18

"Quicksand" is a little film noir that runs only 1 hour and 19 minutes. It lacks clever dialogue and complex characterization but goes right for the working class audience with a cast of ordinary folk. Dan Brady (Mickey Rooney) is a regular guy, an auto mechanic and WWII veteran who is reluctant to get tied down to girlfriend Helen (Barbara Bates). Helen is a pretty young woman, patient to a fault, in love with Dan, and willing to put up with his rebuffs. She's the perfect companion for Dan, but Vera Novak (Jeanne Cagney), blond bombshell cashier at the local coffee shop, appeals to his ego. Dan cajoles Vera into a date but finds that he hasn't enough money to take her out on the town. So he takes $20 from the cash drawer at work, intending to replace it the next day. When he is unable to come up with the cash in time, Dan's attempts at creative financing get him deeper and deeper into trouble.

"Quicksand" isn't a bad film, but there isn't much to it, and what there is is repetitive. Dan is a nice guy with limited intellect and scruples who makes the same mistake repeatedly, digging himself deeper into the same nightmarish hole. He's an unimaginative sort of fool, though not inauthentic. Vera's a trashy, simple femme fatale, but a convincing threat. When Dan asks her, "Think you can handle me?" She replies, "Sure, I can handle you easy." And there is no one easier than Dan, whose aptitude for idiocy and self-pity prove a poor combination. Mickey Rooney is perfectly good in the role. Peter Lorre is wasted as the sleazy owner of a penny arcade. Maybe Lorre was gray-listed during this time. "Quicksand"'s characters are not sophisticated enough to be compelling, and the movie's ending lowers the film where more courageous writing might have elevated it. But "Quicksand" is effective as a sort of plebian film noir. The Image Entertainment DVD (2000) has no subtitles or bonus features.

A Masterly Piece of Miscasting.......2006-09-21

This is Film Noir with a heart of gold. Unlike most films in this genre, it has a strong moral message, serving a good social purpose. Rooney is well cast as the average Joe, a mechanic who borrows $20 for a date from the till, leading to an unfortunate sequence of events that almost land him in the electric chair.

Some reviewers have complained that he is too "baby-faced" for the role, which centres on trying to impress some hard-boiled blonde with a thing about mink, but the whole point of this movie is that, throughout, Rooney's character is stretching to be something he is not - a cool, manly, streetwise tough guy, never short of money.

We all know the relationship with the blond is a mismatch. These elements maintain the feeling of constant imbalance and tension that pervade this movie and greatly add to the drama. If he were Bogart, he'd handle this blonde without even noticing, and the movie would be all the poorer for that.

Peter Lorre reinforces the Noirish mood as an oily game-centre manager. When you see him, you automatically expect to Bogart walk round the corner and make him sweat 'n' roll his dog eyes, but instead Rooney does. This is why this movie works. If it's miscasting, it's a masterly piece of miscasting.

An Inexpensive Surprise.......2006-06-15

Mickey Rooney stars in Quicksand, a great film about how a small unnoticeable crime can turn into something large and out of control if one isn't careful. After needing money for a date with a beautiful woman in town (Jeanne Cagney), Dan turns to his cash register at the auto shop where he works for a twenty that he can easily replace later. However, when the accountant comes early to check up on the place, he's in need of cash faster than he planned, so he buys a watch on the installment plan and pawns it for the cash. When he learns this is a crime, he has to come up with $100 in a day, leading to even more problems down the line.

Rooney is wonderful in the leading role of this gripping film. His innocent face does not hinder him in this serious part. His kisses are passionate and reason to support why he was such a ladies man.

Although this is a bargain DVD, the picture is crisp and clear and the sound quality is good.

Mickey Rooney finds you can't dig your way out of a hole!.......2006-03-22

"Quicksand" is probably Mickey Rooney's most unusual movie. At first glance, it's a piece that doesn't seem to fit him at all, but somehow it all works. Perhaps because he's not the classic "tall, dark and handsome" noir leading man, he brings credibility to the role of an everyman who becomes the victim of circumstance and bad judgement to find his life spiraling out of control: from petty theft, to armed robbery, to auto theft, to murder. His every attempt to break the law to get out of trouble only lands him deeper. And along the way, he even learns the value of a good girl over a tart.

This film serves as an object lesson to all us guys: pick the good girl, especially when she's the cuter one anyway!

Description
