Product Description

When the coach of Vince Papale's beloved hometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time--no one good enough to play professional football was going to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papale--a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old, substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan's fantasy--moving from his cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as a professional football player.

Walt Disney Pictures scored a surprise box-office hit with Invincible, and the movie deserved its good reviews as a fine example of how above-average writing, direction, and casting can turn formulaic material into something special. And make no mistake, this is a formulaic movie, with its real-life story embellished with Rocky-like enthusiasm, and lovingly crafted with the same quality of working-class humanism that made The Rookie a similarly popular Disney hit. This time, the inspirational true story is that of Vince Papale, a down-on-his-luck substitute teacher in Philadelphia (played by Mark Wahlberg in a nicely understated performance) who was 30 years old, out of work, abandoned by his wife, and biding time as a bartender when he answered an open call for tryouts on the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team in 1976. Going with his gut instinct, new coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) rewards Papale's diligent efforts with a place on the team, and Invincible combines gridiron guts, low-key romance (as Papale meets his future wife-to-be, played by Elizabeth Banks) and blue-collar friendship in an underdog story that moves, with casual charm and abundant appeal, toward a rousing feel-good finish. Making good use of digital visual effects to recreate Philly's now-demolished Veterans Stadium, director Erickson Core (also serving as his own cinematographer) tackles this heartwarming assignment with intelligence and flair, spinning gold from what could have been just another routine sports movie. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Great family fare.......2007-06-22

This is a wonderful film that the entire family can enjoy (without watching a cartoon). It has the further benefit of being based on a real person's life and experience. In some ways it is Dick Vermeil's story as well as Vince Papale's. Both are embarking on long-shot careers. The fact that we know how Vermeil's will turn out provides reassurance that Vince's will turn out well also. A sweet and engaging film about individual aspiration, family, neighborhood, and friendship. Watch it with your kids without any fear of embarrassment. How often can you say that today?

5 out of 5 stars a real good movie.......2007-05-14

this is very serious and true movie. i really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie.......2007-04-11

This movie will really touch your heart. The scenery, the acting, and the music are all on point. What a great story!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the usual sports saga.......2007-04-02

"Invincible" is a cut above the usual "downtrodden young man achieves the impossible" sports saga. It's the true story of a Philadelphia Eagles fan who responds to the coach's publicity stunt of holding tryouts for his beleagured team. No one expects anything to come of it, but Vince proves to be incredibly fast on his feet, and makes the first cut--and the second, and the third, and eventually the team. He's ostracized by regular team members, and even by some of his buddies back in the neighborhood, who fear they'll lose him to the big time. In his first big play, he blows it--but then makes an incredible play in a later game that wins it for the Eagles. My husband says Vince played for 3 years on Philadelphia's special teams.
This movie paints a real life gritty picture of working class Philadelphia, almost like the first Rocky film. Very suitable for kids without being sappy sweet--my 8 year old grandson thought it was great. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A feel good movie.......2007-03-31

This movie was well done, it builds the problem (a depressed era) and a lack of confidence and shows how one man handles that struggle with the help of his friends and family. A must watch and one that I would recommend purchasing. Then do a look up on Wikpedia to learn more about the man.

The popular adventure-comedy Bleach grows more complicated as it continues. Ichigo's extraordinary level of spiritual energy begins to affect his friends: Chad fights soul-devouring Hollows; Ohime's power takes the form of six tiny protector-spirits. The enmity between Ichigo and Uryu Ishida evolves as they learn more about the 200-year-old conflict between Soul Hunters and Quincys. When a monstrous Hollow known as a Menos Grande appears, Ichigo vanquishes it single-handedly. But the effort nearly destroys his body as he can't really control his enormous power; Ishida has to rescue him. Ichigo and Ishida seem to be moving toward the sort of grudgingly respectful rivalry Kazuma and Ryuho shared in s-CRY-ed. More dire problems come to the fore with the arrival of supernatural assassin Renji Abarai. He intends to kill Rukia for giving Ichigo her powers and Ichigo for exercising them: The disc ends on a classic cliff-hanger. Orange-haired high school student Ichigo Kurosaki, the hero of the fantasy-adventure Bleach (2004) has the unsettling ability to see the spirits of the dead, at least the ones who are unable to rest in peace. Mysterious explosions in his neighborhood lead Ichigo to Rukia, a Soul Reaper whose job consists of destroying Hollows (soul-eating monsters) and ensuring the deceased find safe repose with the Soul Society. When she's injured in a battle with one of the mask-faced Hollows, Rukia transfers her sword and much of her power to Ichigo. The spiritual energy that enabled him to see spirits makes him a formidable substitute Soul Reaper, but he's not sure he wants the job: too many risks and moral dilemmas. A winning combination of supernatural adventure, well-executed sword fights, and fractious comedy (Ichigo and Rukia bicker constantly), Bleach scored a big hit in Japan: the series ran for more than 100 episodes, and was followed by two OVAs and a theatrical feature. It should find an equally enthusiastic audience in the U.S. (Unrated, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars How good is Bleach?.......2007-06-29

Pretty darn good if you ask me...when I first the trailers, advertisements(whatever) on adult swim I really thought this was just another crap anime too cute for an older audience...well I was wrong. Watching the first episode I was intrigued as to what the story was about..pretty much you get the idea that Rukia is some kind of "death" that gives souls peace (in other words to move on)..sounds interesting right? Well, it is. From then on it goes into more detail on the whole shebang about the soul society, hollows, etc..it will get you hooked for sure..heck even the huge filler Bount arc was pretty darn good! Even though it's not done yet (currently on 131 episodes) there is a lot more to come for sure, I just hope that bleach doesn't fall into too much filler, as that can ruin a good show..just watch Inuyasha and Naruto..if you want to know what I mean. Good show recommend it to pretty much everyone (no nudity or stuff (maybe fanservice, but nothing major)..there is blood and stuff..but nothing on the level of Elfen Lied or Gantz..so it's good enough for even 8yr olds.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good .......2007-02-15

This is one of the better series hitting the market today. I found these first episodes cool the first time I seen them. Bleach has a very interesting story so far, with great character development, action, and comedy. There is a group called the Soul Society who's purpose is to help souls pass on to the afterlife. The ones responsible for this are called soul reapers. The soul reapers are samurais. There's two types of souls, one is called "wholes" and the other "hollows". The hollows are the evil ones. They waste no time explaining the situation behind the hollows. I was into it from the start. The main character who is introduced gets dragged into this. He kind of reminds me of Inuyasha. So far there is no annoying characters and its easy to follow. There is nothing to confuse you here. The episodes are mostly stand alone. Each is its own with some type of plot developing and a "to be continue" here and there. The animation and voice acting is good. The opening and closing themes are very good also. The dvd comes with 4 episodes and a few extras, nothing special in the extras to me. I really do like this series but I'm not going to collect them individually. I'll just wait for the boxsets to come out because this is a very long series. If you dont feel the same, then it doesn't seem like you have to wait very long for the next volumes because they're putting them out pretty quick, its like a two month wait in between them. If you like this I also recommend the new Guyver series. Its on fire.

5 out of 5 stars Great Show! Glad it's finally dubbed.......!.......2007-01-30

I know I will draw the ire of hardcore fans when I give this review! ;-)

My husband tried very hard to get me into Bleach a few months ago, but I absolutely hate reading subtitles when I'm trying to watch a show. I find it too distracting from the animation, especially when a show has as much going on as Bleach does. So though my husband tried, I could never seem to get into it, although he sang its praises.

I recently have had the pleasure of watching the dubbed version, and boy am I hooked! I go episode to episode without a break, I'm so anxious to see what is going to happen next!

Bleach is what anime is all about. It's hilariously funny, deep and thoughtful, beautifully drawn and has a plot that keeps you on your toes. The characters are wonderfully complex (okay, except maybe Kon, but dang he's funny!). I love the way the plot builds. I have only watched the first 17 or so episodes, but I'm impressed with it so far, and from what my husband says it only keeps getting better.

My husband has watched some of the dubbed versions with me and has enjoyed them, although he has said some of the English voices don't fit the character's as well as the Japanese versions.

But from someone who has only watched the dub's, I am definitely impressed and can't wait to continue watching!

4 out of 5 stars Nothing wrong, but could be righter........2007-01-02

First off, my title and rating are not a reflection of the show, but of the American release. If I had to rate the show on a scale of 1 to 5, it'd be a 9. It has a great balance of drama, comedy, action, and all the little quirks that make us anime fans jump off the couch, throwing our dorito stained hands into the air with glee while the rest of the world looks on in horror. Despite the quirks, though, it remains accessible to everyone, and has turned many of my friends to anime where other series failed to do so.

Hell, even the filler arc of the show (you know, filler: that thing that killed Naruto) gets better toward its second half and has you waiting on the edge of your seat just like the rest of the show. It's all fabulous.

As for the DVD, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Some will argue that certain instances of profanity have been cut and replaced with more "suitable" material, but that all just depends on who your Japanese interpreter is. As has already been said by other reviewers, if you don't like the English dub of the series, just switch back to Japanese. Simple as that.

My only beefs with the whole thing are economic and aesthetic. Bleach is a loooong series with no sign of stopping any time soon, so throwing on 5+ episodes per disc instead of 4 or less would have been nice on the wallet of those few and devoted who will actually end up buying the whole series over time. Also, though nothing has been cut out of this release, I would still like to see Bleach get the Naruto treatment here with longer, multiple disc box sets that cover larger or whole portions of a story arc. It cuts down on shipping/packaging costs and resources, looks a hell of a lot nicer, and won't take up an entire attic when the series is all wrapped up.

Oh, and Kenpachi rocks almost TOO hard.

      4 out of 5 stars BECOMING A SOUL REAPER.......2007-01-01

15 year old Ichigo has been seeing dead people for about a year now and his sense of justice compels him to protect their rights. For instance, as Episode 1 opens, some street punks have kicked over a bottle of flowers left on a roadside curb that serves as a memorial for a girl who died there. Ichigo proceeds to beat the crap out of said punks! Ichigo lives with his two younger sisters, one of which can also see spirits, but ironically refuses to believe in their existence! His dad runs a small hospital and is always prepared to go a few rounds with Ichigo. And by rounds, I mean fighting, not visiting patients. The spirits he sees are harmless, so he's pretty annoyed when a cute girl in a samurai outfit complete with sword leaps into his bedroom window! And then a monstrous demon called a "Hollow" begins attacking his little sisters and destroying his house. Hollows are the souls of dead people who went to the grave with some sort of negative energy, such as a grudge, or a great sadness, who now must feed on the souls of the living and the dead. The girl that came in Ichigo's window is a "Soul Reaper" named Rukia, whose job is to purify the Hollows so they can pass into the afterlife. But she does it with the point of her sword. When Rukia gets wounded trying to save Ichigo, she grants her powers to Ichigo. Now he must make the choice between protecting just his family or all of mankind from the threat of the Hollows.

I have to admit, I started out a big fan of the manga version of Bleach, but somewhere around Volume 5, it got too dumb for my tastes, what with Tinkerbell fairies and superhero teams entering the fray. I also didn't like the style of humor, for example the fist fighting between Ichigo and his dad was straight out of the old 1980s Police Academy films. Surprisingly, everything I didn't like about the manga is vastly improved in the anime version. Maybe because the anime is more of a visual experience than a written story. Also, the voice acting brought out the characters more and made them more real to me, and they became funnier and more interesting than on a black and white page. I'll have to see whether my enjoyment continues in the anime series past the point where I stopped reading the manga. One aspect of the manga that is not improved upon that much is the design of the Hollows. These monsters are not in the least bit scary and more often than not look like masked Teletubbies! It seemed like the original designer spent a lot of time on all the characters but when it came to drawing Hollows, he fell asleep and let a five year old draw them. That was one of the reasons also why I stopped reading. The form of the Hollows will get worse as the series progresses. It's a real shame that the major bad guys in the show look so stupid.

Director Noriyuke Abe ably juggles battles, emotional scenes, and slapstick as the popular comedy-adventure Bleach continues. In a rare, gentle moment, Ichigo's father tells him he shouldn't blame himself for his mother's death, but should honor her memory by living in ways that would make her proud. Although his father's advice buoys his spirits, Ichigo vows to avenge his mother by slaying the Grand Fisher, the powerful Hollow that killed her. Ichigo and Rukia face a more immediate challenge at school. Uryu Ishida, the top student in their class, is a "Quincy:" a descendant of a clan of Hollow-hunters who despise their rival Soul Reapers. The icy Uryu challenges Ichigo to see who can kill more Hollows, and releases a potion that attracts the hideous creatures. When a Hollow threatens Ichigo's sister Karin, his muscular friend Chad unleashes his latent monster-fighting powers to save her. It's everything Bleach fans love and expect. (Rated "Teen," suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

      5 out of 5 stars Bleach.......2007-04-20

Bleach is the best anime/manga series I've come across in a very long time. The characters are well developed and lovable. The story has a real plot and keeps moving forward while other anime series simply fall apart in the middle leaving you feeling cheated but Bleach keeps you coming back for more. While I can't wait to see how this story ends I must admit that I will also be very sad to see it go. I've grown attached to this funny, charaming, exciting group of characters.

      5 out of 5 stars awesome show!.......2007-04-11

this is one of my favorite shows in long while. (I cheated and watched all of the japanese episodes so i want to tell you that it only gets better, as hard as that is to believe this show could get any better!) this is definatly worth every penny you spend on it!

5 out of 5 stars Keeps getting better.......2007-03-29

I'm not the type of reviewer to just hand out 5 stars like candy. But Bleach is a series I'm just starting to love. Vol.3 is every bit as good as the last 2. There's a lot more action, comedy, and a deeper story is begining to develop. You also see there's actually a more serious side to Ichigo's father, he's not exactly a raving moron like he first appeared.

This volume also introduces a different type of Hollow hunter called the Quincies. The story behind them is pretty good and a lot of the other characters are being more developed and you actually start to care about them. This vol. is the same as others 4 episodes and a couple of extras. If your new to Bleach and must check it out. Then I highly advise you to pick up the first 2 vols. The best advice would be to just wait for the collection to come out because thats going to be alot cheaper. Bleach is a very long and addictive series. Dont be surprised if you purchase the first dvd then feel the need to purchase the rest as they comeout.

As Bleach continues, the tone careens from farcical to surprsingly poignant, and director Noriyuke Abe makes it all work. Chad, Ichigo's musclebound ox of a pal, parts with his cockatiel, as Ichigo helps the soul of small boy pass over. Rukia gives Ichigo a magic pill (from a PEZ-like dispenser) that should create a place-holder soul to manage his body while Ichigo's real spirit battles soul-devouring Hollows. But the pill contains one of the last surviving "Mod Souls"--and Ichigo ends up fighting himself to get his body back. He sticks the pill into a plush lion toy, and inadvertently creates the pesky sidekick Kon. The mood darkens when Ichigo faces the anniversary of his mother's death, which he believes he caused. While he grieves, Rukia confronts a stealth agent from the Soul Society and a Hollow attacks Ichigo's sisters. This singular mixture of pathos and slapstick has made Bleach a hit in Japan and America.(Unrated, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) --Charles Solomon

      Description

      5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!.......2007-03-09

Im very glad that VIS media bought the rights to this show and released in it to the US in with English Voice overs, Story is compelling and keeps you wanting to watch one more epsode. Voice overs were pretty good as well, unlike some japanese anime voice overs the actors are top notch in their portrayal of the characters. I would recomend this to any anime fan, and even the casual shopper looking to see what the fuss is with anime.

5 out of 5 stars It just keeps getting better.......2007-02-15

I enjoyed Bleach vol. 2 alot more than the last one. To those who never seen this series, you must start on vol. 1 or you will be lost a little bit. But I'll explain some of it anyway. Bleach is about a group called the soul society and their purpose is to help souls pass on to the afterlife. They use samurais called soul reapers to carry this out. There's two types of souls, the "wholes" and the "hollows". The hollows are evil souls. Now enough of that and on to the review of this dvd.

Vol.2 picks up right after the last episode and has alot to offer. The story is pretty deep and theres a pretty hectic battle almost from the start. I wont spoil it for you but the ending is ill. In the later episodes new characters is introduced but the one that stands out is the Mod Soul. You have to see that one. This volume also gets a little deeper into the main characters life. The dvd is 4 episodes and contains extras. I really do like this series but just like I said before, I'll just wait for the box collections to come out because this is a very long series and it can get very expensive. The wait between vols. isn't very long, but I can still wait for the boxsets. If you like this, checkout the New Guyver also.

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT SERIES, 100% RECOMMENDED.......2006-12-12

WHEN A FRIEND OF MINE GAVE ME A COPY A THIS SERIES I REALLY NEVER IMAGINED HOW GOOD IT WAS GOING TO BE. SLOW START I MUST SAY, TAKES AT LEAST LIKE 5 DVD'S TO GET TO THE REAL ACTION, THAT WOULD BE, "THE SOUL SOCIETY ARC" OR SAGA... OH MAN..AWESOME FIGHTS..GREAT CHARACTERS..
TRUST ME..YOU WONT REGRET IT. SO FAR 105 EPISODES AND STILL A LOT MORE TO COME. BLEACH IS THE NEXT GREAT SERIES FOR ALL YOU ANIME FANS !!

I liked this movie but not completely what I was expecting. It was based on a true story which also made it appealing but I found the story kind of dragged on. The football scenes were amazing though. Really got into the action and let you feel the violence that is professional football.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie and awesome picture and features.......2007-01-06

Movies in high definition are the future. This one was brilliantly made anyways (without the high-definition) and you add in the HD with Blu-Ray and the extra features (documentary on the real Vince Papale) and it just enhances the experience. I saw this at the movies and had to own it. It's inspirational and teaches that you are never too old to achieve your dreams. Definite buy on Blu-Ray or regular DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Like many series, gets progressively worse.......2007-01-20

The series gets worse and worse. Goes from an important problem (drugs) and somewhat decent movie, to a not so important problem (carjackings) and not so good movie to a really not important one (steroids? seriously, come on) and awful movie, to one that was a fraction of the first and second ones (Just gangs) and a movie you'd need a gun to my head to make me watch. I just hope they continue the series with a secret cd burning organization, or maybe just counterfeit purses. I'm sure whatever they do it'll go straight to video yet again.

Treat is back in action, and this time he's after a bunch of steroid injected jocks who are supplied by the mafia. He doesn't have to take on this job, but Williams' character just seems to be an all around do-gooder this time around. He's also on a college campus this time instead of a high school. It's nice to see him away from the gang banger environment and taking on the rich jocks and mafiosos. His war buddie's dying request is that Treat gives his medal to his daughter. Naturally this guy's daughter happens to be a teacher who gets beat up by these jocks, thus giving Williams another opportunity to play teacher. He brings another crew with him along the way, including a black samurai, a rough chick and a heavy guy in a Hawaiian shirt. More of the same classroom fun as Williams beats, shoots, kills and maims the student body. One amusing scene has him lecturing the class on the Vietman war as he's engaged in a fistfight with a huge football player. Another classic has him slitting a guy's throat with a pair of eyeglasses. Ah, yes, Treat Williams is becoming the Charles Bronson of the new millenium. Will he get to the bottom of this barrel of steroid clams? Will he jump in the sack with that cute teacher? Will his students survive his English literature class? Watch Substitute 3 to find out.

      2 out of 5 stars SUBSTITUTE 3 Review.......2004-04-26

Second straight-to-video sequel to 1995's "The Substitute" has part-time mercenary, part-time substitute teacher Treat Williams taking over for a college professor who was brutally beaten by her juiced-up jock students. Williams and his new team of operatives are out to uncover a steroid scandal linking the university's football team to a local Mafia goon. Pretty good in a dumb Saturday afternoon movie type of way but the third act is more cheesy and full of holes then... well, Swiss cheese, I guess.

The delicate issue of student discipline becomes dangerously pointed when a vengeance-seeking mercenary (the perennially underrated Treat Williams) sews a couple of tweed patches onto the elbows of his flack jacket and proceeds to add a few chalk outlines to the blackboard jungle. Although the premise of this intermittently entertaining sequel can't match the goofy novelty of the 1996 original, it does sport a couple of effective action scenes (the teacher's demonstration of the yo-yo's history as a lethal weapon is a highlight), and a talented cast (including Broadway star B.D. Wong as a shop teacher who cares a little too much about his tools) that's fully aware of the numerous absurdities depicted herein. An occasionally effective lowbrow action flick that, at the very least, sure beats the heck out of study hall. --Andrew Wright

The whole series of Substitutes are excellent movies. Really like Treat Williams in the title roll, but would have loved to see Tom Berenger in more than just the first.

4 out of 5 stars Treat Subs For Tom.......2004-11-25

Treat Williams steps into the role of mercenary-turned-vigilante in Substitiute 2. He plays a guy who's worked with Tom Berenger's character before(or at least has mutual friends). I've always liked Treat Williams. He's one of those actors that's actually very good, yet seems to get thrown into these movies all the time. You'll catch him once in awhile in major motion pictures as a supporting character, but in B flicks he's the star! He seems a little too nice to play the cold hearted mercenary type, but does it well. The plot's similar to the first film in the sense that he goes undercover at a New York high school to find out who killed his brother, get revenge, and take care of his niece. Along the way he brings a fellow merc, teams up with the half crazed Vietnam vet janitor and discovers a chop shop operation going on in the school. Nothing terribly groundbreaking, but it's fun to see Williams slapping up the gang banger students who think he's just some pushover teacher. Good mindless action fun if you like that sort of thing.

      3 out of 5 stars SUBSTITUTE 2 Review!.......2004-04-26

As is the case in just about every straight-to-video sequel, the original star is out and a newer somewhat lesser known star is in. Treat Williams does the series justice as a mercenary who fills for his slain brother's history class in a mean Brooklyn high school. It wouldn't be a "Substitute" film if he wasn't kicking and punching his students through the halls with the help of a few unlikely faculty members. Good straight-to-video fare with a decent cast featuring B.D. Wong, Michael Michelle, Eugene Byrd, and a few others but Angel David taking over Raymond Cruz's "Joey Six" role is about easy to believe as Tommy Lee Jones filling in for Billy Dee Williams. Oh wait! Anyways, you get what you pay for.

4 out of 5 stars ALMOST AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL.......2003-12-19

ANOTHER MERCENARY [TREAT WILLIAMS] BECOMES A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER AT A SCHOOL IN WHICH CRIME IS RAMPANT. NOT TOO MUCH DIFFERENT FROM THE ORIGINAL, BUT IT'S ALMOST BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL! TREAT WILLIAMS MIGHT NOT BE AS MEAN AS TOM BERENGER WAS, BUT HE'S STILL A PRETTY INTRIGUING ACTOR FOR THE ROLE THAT TOM BERENGER PLAYED. THIS IS DEFINITELY WORTH WATCHING. THE ACTION SCENES ARE PRETTY CLEVER. EVEN FEATURES AN APPEARANCE FROM GURU, WHICH IS THE MC FOR GANG STARR.

      2 out of 5 stars A pointless sequel.......2003-10-31

The original "Substitute" starring Tom Berenger and Ernie Hudson was an over-the-top but admittedly clever take on the "tough teacher/tough class" sub-genre started by "Dangerous Minds". Unfortunately, such movies typically spawn mediocre sequels to capitalize on even moderate interest, which leaves us with "Substitute 2: School's Out", starring Treat Williams instead of Berenger.

To say that this movie is unoriginal is an understatement. It more-or-less puts us into the exact same situation as the first film, only done worse than before. When his brother is murdered by a violent street gang called the Brotherhood in a carjacking, mercenary Karl Thomasson (Williams) decides to take on two roles. The first is to take care of his brother's daughter. The second is to become a subtitute teacher for his brother's Brooklyn high school class, which some of the Brotherhood thugs attend. He suspects that the school's auto shop teacher, Warren Drummond, is involved in a car-stripping operation with the Brotherhood and its violent leader, Lil' B. Naturally, it's up to Thomasson to teach the tough class while working to take down Lil' B and Drummond's operation with his mercenary pal Joey 6 and a janitor named Johnny Bartee.

The most dissapointing aspect of this movie is the acting. Before you say, "It's a B movie, so what do you expect?", consider the cast involved in this film. Treat Williams may be a direct-to-video actor for the most part, but considering his number of Emmy nominations and his achievements in "Everwood", you'd expect a little more from him. He simply comes off as too nice a guy to be a hardened merc. Longtime Broadway actor and recent "Law & Order: SVU" cast member B.D. Wong doesn't fare much better as Drummond; he's either over-the-top or very dull. Michael Michelle ("ER") as teacher and love interest Kara Lavelle and Angel David ("The Crow") as Joey 6 are both OK, but wasted for the most part. Daryl Edwards, who plays Johnny Bartee, ends up becoming very annoying in this film. And while rapper Guru (of Gang Starr fame) is one of the most gifted hip-hop lyricists around, he's no actor, and he really embarrasses himself as Lil' B in this movie.

Aside from the weak acting, the movie doesn't really do much with its characters or plot. The relationship between Thomasson and the gang-bangers in his class (one of the better points of the original film) never works at all, especially his attempt to connect to Mase (Eugene Byrd of "8 Mile" fame). At one point, Thomasson throws Mase's stereo out the window because he's playing rap music really loud in class. Mase gets angry and attacks him with a switchblade, but after Thomasson subdues him and leaves him in charge of the class for a moment, Mase later apologizes for what he did. In the space of one class, Mase changes from "I'm-a cut you up real good" to "yeah, I was wrong". Right.

There are other problems, too, including some ridiculously unrealistic action sequences. How does somebody manage to survive an attack by gang-bangers firing automatic weapons at them from BOTH SIDES of a narrow corridor? Beats me, but Thomasson, Joey 6, and Bartee do somehow. Equally bad is the scene where Drummond kills Lavelle by shooting her at point-blank range and then wipes her blood off his hands on a stuffed teddy bear AT THE SCENE OF THE CRIME. Oh, yeah, and I'm still very puzzled as to how they got that laser trick to work on the Brotherhood when laser sources are very easy to spot at any range. The hoods in Brooklyn may not be Ivy League material, but I really didn't think they all have the intelligence levels of rodents.

In the end, "Substitute 2" never works as well as its predecessor did, or as well as many such movies in general. The poor acting and weak plot make it hard to like. If you want to see a movie in this genre done right, see the first film or "187" with Samuel L. Jackson. You can definitely do better than this film.

4 out of 5 stars Redeeming quality: the locale.......2005-02-15

The plot's odd, but maybe that's okay with you. The fight scenes are well done, but maybe you don't care about that. The dialog is not wretched, and the directing's quite good. All in all, as a movie, probably a 4 if you like this kind of thing, a 2 if you don't, a 3 on average.

What kicked it up a notch for me is that it was filmed at my high school alma mater, Woodward Academy. One of the good guy's gets killed right outside the room where I had english with Mrs. Hudson. The administration building is actually a library built after I graduated. The head honcho (and lead bad guy) has an office in what's really the alumni building. Even the Woodward pool makes an appearance - three, actually.

Whereas on-location filming usually takes advantage of locations for outdoor shoots, and does the indoor shots in a sound stage, a tremendous amount of the stuff here was actually filmed inside at Woodward - in the hallways, an office or two, even a classroom.

So, for those of you who attended Woodward, forget about the plot and the other reviews of it. Pick up on the little things - like the school uniforms that closely resemble those of GMA (note: Woodward Academy used to be Georgia Military Academy), the skinhead's mascot (Werewolfs; Woodward is the War Eagles), and what appears in one shot to be a photo of Col. Brewster (who founded GMA).

      4 out of 5 stars Treat Yourself.......2004-11-25

Treat Williams is back, still kicking [...] and asking questions later. At this pooint I think most people now identify Williams as The Substitute considering this is his third outing as the mercenary with a heart of gold. Once again he's lured into a deadly mission by an old war pal. He seems to be a sucker for taking on these missions as charity cases coz he never gets paid. Naturally the gig has him as a history teacher at a military academy. He discovers a secret group within the school called the "werewolves". The Werewolves are an angry white supremacist bunch who are in training for a civil war between black and white they believe is happening soon. They like to run around and destroy property owned and supported by minorities. The leader of the group(The always scary Patrick Kilpatrick) is also the commendant of the academy. Big shocker there, huh? Williams goes about his routine of wooing the leading lady, beating up at least one kid in the classroom(with chalkboard erasers!), being all round sneaky and saving the day with a little help from his friends. His mission is to get his buddy's(the guy who sent him on this mission) nephew out of the Werewolves. Being that this is a part 4 in a series it can't help but feel a little stale, but it deals with some scary subject matter(neo-nazis) and that makes it pretty solid and pretty interesting. You'll like it if you like the others. Personally I hope Williams does at least one more of these films.

2 out of 5 stars Well, it's no "Substitute 3".......2004-08-10

Part four in what is arguably this decade's finest educator-themed action franchise. Treat Williams goes undercover in a Nazi military academy to root out the evil plot that lies within, battling an evil school commandant, brainwashed Nazi students, and a Korean guy whose presence is never adequately explained. You'd think a movie willing to go with a premise that ludicrous would have to be entertaining, but most of it is pretty dull. The movie tends to drag- there's far too many talky scenes about how much the evil white supremacist commandant (palyed by a sort of poor man's John Malkovich) hates atheistic multicultural liberals and not nearly enough action. The ratio of liberal sermonizing to buttkicking is badly miscalculated.
It gets two stars instead of one for a couple of good action sequences (I especially liked the death by bulldozer) and the presence of Treat Williams, who's much too good for this sort of thing. Overall, though, I wouldn't bother unless it's the only thing on cable- there's much more entertaining action fare out there.

      2 out of 5 stars Where's Tom Berenger?.......2004-05-11

Whoa! this Movie was horrible! Wouldnt it make more sense to have Tom Berenger in the movie? Why even make a SUB 4 if he's not in it? Also, besides him not being in it, there were many flaws, Dont get me started

5 out of 5 stars Sub-4 Will Take Your Breath Away!.......2003-12-14

Wow. First off, I just want to say that this movie is truly a significant achievement in the history of filmmaking. Treat Williams stars in this thrilling drama, that sends a humble mercenary into the very heart of a Neo-Nazi conspiracy. Set in the late 1990's, our mercenary-hero (armed with high-explosives and a Ph.D. in modern literature) becomes a substitute at a military academy, only to discover it's been overrun by Nazi-thugs and a world-class exterminator. Peppered with megabuck special effects, including a scene in which the intolerant Nazis blow up a minority owned power plant, this movie proves itself to be a treat (no pun intended) for the eyes, as well as the soul. You'll truly feel like you're part of the action as Treat crushes his students with a bulldozer, beats ass in the classroom with chalkboard erasers, and kills the Nazi-principal as he screams in desperation for "racial purity". Put the children to bed for this one! "Substitute 4: Failure Is not an Option" will affect you in ways few films have. Its realistic portrayal of Nazism in our military academies is a silent and chilling reminder of who's really in charge of our children's futures. Your life will never be the same, once you see this film. Its title may seem cryptic, yet its message rings clear. Failure is NOT an Option!
