The director and action-magician John Woo (Face Off) can always be counted on to create spectacular violent set pieces, with bodies and broken glass gracefully airborne in slow motion. But everything else in this feature-length TV pilot is grindingly conventional. Woo managed to rise above Jean-Claude Van Damme in Hard Target, but there's not much he can do with Dolph Lundgren's Jack Devlin, a kick-boxing former U.S. Marshall turned bodyguard, assigned to guard the body of a drug-addicted supermodel (Kam Heskin, from TV's Sunset Beach). Between shootouts, the elements of the future series are wheeled creakingly into place: a spacious Ikea deluxe apartment with a built-in armory, a caustic eye-patched sidekick (Saul Rubinek), and even a precocious freckle-faced girl (Padraigin Murphy) who becomes Devlin's stepdaughter, when his best buddy is rubbed out. The gorgeous showdown scene between Devlin and the psycho-stalker bad guy (Phillip MacKenzie) takes place in a milk-bottling plant, with the white stuff splashing all over---but this is TV fare, so there's no red stuff mixed in. Action addicts are advised to stick with the world-class gunplay films of Woo's Hong Kong period, A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, and Hard Boiled. --David Chute

Product Description
Andy is regarded as one of the world's preeminent blackjack players. His notoriety is largely tied to his role as a player and manager of the infamous M.I.T. Blackjack Team, as chronicled in the Ben Mezrich's book, Bringing Down the House. Andy won so much money counting cards that he's now listed on the "Griffin List" of known card counters, and no longer allowed by any casino to employ the tactics described in his new DVD, Beating Blackjack with Andy Bloch. Although he's rarely seen playing blackjack, his celebrity in conjunction with the M.I.T. Blackjack team has been featured in the documentary "The Hot Shoe"(2003), Fox's reality series "Casino" (2004), the BBC Horizon show "Making Millions the Easy Way" (2005), and GSN's recent expose on the team in their series, "Anything to Win" (2006). Only Andy knows how much he won playing blackjack. Since becoming a professional poker player in 2002, Andy has excelled on the tournament circuit. He has eight WPT finishes in the money and top finishes in many other tournaments. In 2005, he won the $10,000 buy-in Ultimate Poker Challenge II championship event and won his first WSOP circuit title at the Rio. Andy is truly unique - he earned an engineering degree from M.I.T and a law degree from the Harvard Law School, yet he makes his living as a professional blackjack and poker player. He has passed the bar exam and has practiced law exactly once. He won the 2003 Roshambo (rock, paper, scissors) World Championship. Currently, he continues to draft briefs, play the stock market, and travel around the world from tournament to tournament.Customer Reviews:

John Wayne's road to stardom needed some giddyup in the early 1930s; after a leading-man turn in The Big Trail, he quickly fell into B-movie obscurity. While waiting to vault to first-tier status in 1939's Stagecoach, he honed his talent with a set of six B-Westerns at Warner Brothers, shot in 1932-33. The series of snappy little films (under an hour each) allowed Warners to recycle footage (and plots) from a string of silent Westerns made with Ken Maynard, with the young Mr. Wayne stepping into Maynard's saddle. The Big Stampede doesn't have much drama but lives up to its title with a cattle-frenzy finale. Noah Beery Sr. plays the baddie, and Wayne's future Stagecoach co-star Berton Churchill plays Lew Wallace (the governor of New Mexico and the man who wrote Ben-Hur). It was shot by Ted McCord, who would go on to shoot The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and East of Eden. Wayne, 25 years old, plays the same naively heroic hero in each of the six films. He's lean and handsome and not yet grown into his talent. But you can see how much the camera likes him--as his future director Howard Hawks might have put it--and how much that famous stride is already coming into step. --Robert Horton

This baroque melodrama is based on a manga by Osamu Tezuka that ran in various magazines from 1973 to 1983. With his facial scar, cape, and mop of black and white hair, Kuro Hazama, a.k.a. Black Jack, resembles a cross between Cruella DeVil and Captain Harlock. He's an unlicensed doctor of staggering abilities and even more staggering fees. Black Jack is called in to develop a cure for a mysterious disease that's ravaging "Super Humans"--people of no discernible ability who suddenly burst onto the scene as stars in sports or the arts. The key to the emergence of the Super Humans and the disease is pharmaceutical heiress and surgeon Jo Carol. Sometimes as allies, sometimes as enemies, Black Jack and Jo Carol uncover the nature of the disease--and the program of human experimentation that produced it. Although Tezuka's many fans will want this adventure, it doesn't represent his best work. The script is needlessly talky, and Black Jack is saved not by his abilities, but by the deus ex machina of a tribe of desert nomads. In an era of revelations about government-sanctioned medical experiments, Tezuka's story takes on a disturbing resonance, but director Osamu Dezaki squanders much of the material's potential impact. Unrated ("parental discretion advised"); suitable for ages 16 and up for violence and often grotesque medical imagery. --Charles SolomonDescription
Black Jack is a master surgeon who possesses impeccable skills, enabling him to perform operations that are impossible for even the finest surgeons. He now is faced with his most difficult task to date and must challenge the limits of medical science...before it's too late.! An extraordinary number of intellectual and athletic "Superhumans" have the world in awe. These "Superhumans" far exceed the framework of common sense and possess the ability to outperform all of their rivals...but how did they get this way? Little does anyone know about the hideous conspiracy lurking behind this strange genetic phenomenon. Black Jack discovers the truth behind this unusual occurrence and uncovers the dark secret of a super-drug, which causes a lethal virus, that is about to endanger the existence al all mankind.
