As noted critic Pauline Kael wrote, the 1987 box-office hit The Untouchables is "like an attempt to visualize the public's collective dream of Chicago gangsters." In other words, this lavish reworking of the vintage TV series is a rousing potboiler from a bygone era, so beautifully designed and photographed--and so craftily directed by Brian De Palma--that the historical reality of Prohibition-era Chicago could only pale in comparison. From a script by David Mamet, the movie pits four underdog heroes (the maverick lawmen known as the Untouchables) against a singular villain in Al Capone, played by Robert De Niro as a dapper caesar holding court (and a baseball bat) against any and all challengers. Kevin Costner is the naive federal agent Eliot Ness, whose lack of experience is tempered by the streetwise alliance of a seasoned Chicago cop (Sean Connery, in an Oscar-winning performance), a rookie marksman (Andy Garcia), and an accountant (Charles Martin Smith) who holds the key to Capone's potential downfall. The movie approaches greatness on the strength of its set pieces, such as the siege near the Canadian border, the venal ambush at Connery's apartment, and the train-station shootout partially modeled after the "Odessa steps" sequences of the Russian classic Battleship Potemkin. It's thrilling stuff, fueled by Ennio Morricone's dynamic score, but it's also manipulative and obvious. If you're inclined to be critical, the movie gives you reason to complain. If you'd rather sit back and enjoy a first-rate production with an all-star cast, The Untouchables may very well strike you as a classic. --Jeff Shannon

The critics and public agree. Brian De Palma's The Untouchables is a must-see masterpiece - glorious, fierce, larger-than-life depiction of the mob warlord who ruled Prohibition-era Chicago... and the law enforcer who vowed to bring him down. This classic confrontation between good and evil and stars Kevin Costner as federal agent Eliot Ness, Robert De Niro as gangland kingpin Al Capone and Sean Connery as Malone, the cop who teaches Ness how to beat the mob: shoot fast and shoot first.

      4 out of 5 stars The Untouchables.......2007-06-08

This movie has action, mystery and hope. The story line twists and turns and has a few surprises. Its not for children under 13 due to the violence.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Real.......2007-06-07

I can't see how anyone can like this movie after seeing it. 1st off, Elliott Ness owes his success to Hollywood writers.Elliott did nothing to stop capone, Nitti, Paul (the waiter) Ricca or anyone else in the Chicago Outfit. Do your mafia history, The made up Character of Frank Nitti is just Disgusting. He was a respected, Feared mobster great in strategy although Paul Ricca directed them all. Capone was fared and very Brutal. Elliott Ness would never confront him like the movie showed. I watched this movie once and never opened it again, Please dont waste your money & time. For the real mafia lovers disreguard the people who left comments saying that they loved the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Eliot Ness vs Al Capone in prohibition-era Chicago.......2007-06-04

"The Untouchables" tells the tale of crusading Federal Agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) bringing down the gang warlord Al Capone (Robert Di Niro) in prohibition-era gangland Chicago.

In these corrupt times no-one can be trusted - least of all the Chicago Police Force - so Ness recruits a disparate band of like-minded crimefighters - wise old Irish beat cop Malone (Sean Connery), young Italian-American hot-shot police recruit Stone (Andy Garcia) and an accountant (Charles Martin Smith) an accountant!? yes Capone was actually brought down for tax evasion!

Director Brian De Palma's over-the-top style works superbly in this film bringing these larger than life characters bursting to life, immeasurably enhanced by Ennio Morricone's superb score.

Connery is moving as the wise old cop, De Niro is spendidly evil as Capone, and Billy Drago is particularly memorable as Capone's oily henchman Frank Nitti - but the entire cast is excellent.

      De Palma's finest achievement.

The picture and sound quality on the DVD is excellent.

DVD extras consist of interviews with the film-makers but sadly no commentary.

1 out of 5 stars FRANK NITTI'S FAMILY SHOULD SUE.......2007-04-13

among all the five star reviews, it's funny nobody mentioned the blatant
misrepresentation of frank nitti in this movie.
he was not a rat-faced psychopath who was thrown off a building by elliot ness as portrayed in this movie. mr. nitti was second in command, and after capone was incarcerated, nitti ran the mob for 13 years.
his life ended when he allegedly committed suicide in 1943.
i don't mind movies blurring the facts in the name of dramatic license,
but in this case being completely blind to actual events will earn this film only one star from me.
btw, de palma also ruined "the black dahlia."
please mr. de palma, don't make anymore movies.

5 out of 5 stars My Review Of The Untouchables On DVD.......2007-04-01

The Special Edition of the 1987 Brian DePalma classic is better than from the version I had seen on Cinemax years ago. The special features were also a delight with interviews by DePalma, Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and others. Now if only Paramount releases the 1993 Untouchables TV series on DVD, that would be cool.

Though certainly tame by The Shield standards, the inaugural 14 episodes from The Untouchables' 1959-60 season are still as potent as a shot of Al Capone's bootleg whiskey. Dames get slapped around. Mugs are mowed down in a hail of wall-pocking, mirror-shattering bullets. Upstanding citizens are brutally terrorized by thugs. Incorruptible Feds are brazenly rubbed out. Sometimes, criminals have the last laugh. It has the visceral kick of watching one of those pre-code Hollywood movies produced before the Hays Office stepped in to sanitize objectionable content. This set opens with the theatrically released version of the two-part pilot episode that set the noir sensibility of the series. Robert Stack (in his iconic and oft-parodied role) stars as Elliot Ness, a straight-arrow Federal agent who forms a special squad of "reliable, courageous, dedicated and honest" men who initially take on Al Capone's corrupt criminal empire in 1929 Chicago. Ness is "a real man," (as a "burly-q" stripper observes). He's just not exactly loaded with personality. Nor do any other of the squad members stand out, except perhaps for Martin Flahrety, and that's only because he's played by a pre-Dick Van Dyke Show Jerry Paris. But from Neville Brand's Al Capone and Claire Trevor's Ma Barker to an unbilled Harry Dean Stanton as a suspect blind newspaperman, it's the legendary criminals and their henchmen (and the great character actors who portray them) who give each episode considerable moxie.

Produced by Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball's Desilu Studios, this groundbreaking series is based on the book The Untouchables: The Real Story by Ness and Oscar Fraley. Real? Not quite. Despite Walter Winchell's signature rat-a-tat narration that gives the proceedings a documentary-like tone, liberties were taken in retelling the sagas of Capone, Dutch Schultz, Lucky Luciano, "Bugs" Moran, "Mad Dog" Coll, and others. But the episodes are so pulpishly good that even if Ness was never really involved in a shootout with Barker (and he wasn't), more forgiving viewers will be of the opinion that he should have been. --Donald Liebenson

      Product Description

I bought this as a gift for my mother for Mother's Day. It is bringing her many hours of great joy. It has even brought me over to their house a little more than normal, just to watch with her. I love to hear her reminisce after an episode or two. Can't wait for the next season to be released.

There were other shows that were better than the ones you've choosen to have the public to see.

5 out of 5 stars Do you Remember.......2007-06-08

I purchased this for my husband who loved the old "Untouchables" series. He was thrilled I could find them on DVD. The clarity is so good on these discs, I was really impressed. Amazon was the only place I could locate them. Surprise some TV gangster buff. It's a great gift idea. Can't wait to see if they offer more seasons. I think it ran for four years, didn't it?

      5 out of 5 stars Better than I remembered.......2007-06-07

The video quality is outstanding. This is probably the first time since the original broadcasts that you see complete uncut episodes. The negative is that they released only half of the season. That will make it very expensive to purchase the entire series if and when they release more. They charge as much for a half as other shows for a complete season.

      5 out of 5 stars Bonanni's Views.......2007-05-16

I had bought this series on VHS in the late 80's and early 90's but could not enjoy it on a 52" Dlp picture screen. Now that I have it on disc it is once again enjoyable .Thanks soo much. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

        5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Every Fan!.......2006-07-26

This dvd is a definite collectors' item for all fans of soccer let alone just Arsenal fans. The last time a team from the oldest professional league in the world i.e. England had ever gone through an entire season unbeaten was in the 19th century.

This achievement by Arsenal is nothing short of unbelievable and may never even be repeated although that's what they said about Preston North End way back when. Still, this dvd has been very professionally made and the surround sound setup is of the highest quality. The background music incorporates the latest modern techno music that seems to be all the rave these days and you get interviews plus highlights from every game Arsenal played during the season as well.

This dvd will interest every fan of attacking and flowing football in the trademark Arsenal style.

        Highly recommended!

        5 out of 5 stars Thorough entertainment.......2005-03-01

A must for any soccer fan. Excellent picture quality. This team made goal scoring look so easy, no wonder they walked off with the Premiership with four games to spare.

5 out of 5 stars You gotta have it if you're a Gunner fan!.......2005-02-21

Well, this was the season that all Arsenal fans had been waiting for...infallibility in the Premiership.

This is an excellent DVD, highlighting key moments in the year, including the missed penalty by Ruud Van Nistlroy that would of gave Arsenal their only loss. The DVD has all the games played by the Gunners in the 2003/2004 season, including FA Cup, Carling Cup, and Champions League, which includes that titillating 5-1 victory over Inter Millan.

There are interviews by 12 members of the team including Henry and the manager Arsen Wegner.

I know the price is a bit high, but I don't regret buying it, and if you're an Arsenal fan or even a football fan, you must own this DVD, which captures some of the best football you'll see from any club team.

        In My Humble Opinion

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable as well as untouchable.......2004-08-30

I was ecstatic at finding this DVD in the American format and so I ordered it instantly. The DVD takes a while to play as it has to show three or four production logos but these can be scanned past. Menus are easy to use and the view any match feature is a brilliant idea. Picture quality is very good and having the actual british commentators is a good touch. Finally the football contained on this DVD is spectacular and anyone who has an interest in soccer owes it to themselves to watch the highlights of the historical achievement of Arsenal Football Club. Unbeaten champions 2003/2004!

        Product Description

        The Hunt for Red October
Based on Tom Clancy's bestseller, directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, The Hunt For Red October seethes with high-tech excitement and sweats with the tension of men who hold Doomsday in their hands. A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it - because the entire Russion naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on!

        The Presidio
Lt. Col. Caldwell (SEAN CONNERY) and Police Inspector Jay Austin (MARK HARMON) don't like each other. Not even a little bit. That's because Caldwell helped run Austin out of the military police a few years back. And now these natural enemies are forced to team up to solve a brutal murder at The Presidio military compound. To make matters worse, Inspector Austin has taken a sudden and passionate interest in a beautiful, feisty young woman (MEG RYAN), who just happens to be Lt. Col. Caldwell's daughter. First, sparks fly between the young lovers. Then fists and bullets start flying as this action-packed thriller kicks into high gear and tears up the streets of San Francisco.

        The Untouchables
The critics and public agree. Brian De Palma's The Untouchables is a must-see masterpiece - glorious, fierce, larger-than-life depiction of the mob warlord who ruled Prohibition-era Chicago... and the law enforcer who vowed to bring him down. This classic confrontation between good and evil and stars Kevin Costner as federal agent Eliot Ness, Robert De Niro as gangland kingpin Al Capone and Sean Connery as Malone, the cop who teaches Ness how to beat the mob: shoot fast and shoot first.

        Amazon.com essential video

People need to know the real facts about the untouchables. If your like me you want to watch a truthful movie. Truth is Elliot Ness did nothing to stop Al Capone or the Chicago outfit. A mafia historian said that Elliot Ness couldn't find cheese in Wisconcin and that's a fact. He did nothin to bring the Chicago out fit down.Tom Dewey is the real untouchable, and even he was unable to bring the mafia to a full hault.Over all the movie gets a sympathetic 3 stars, mostly for insleading info.

5 out of 5 stars Showcases the crime fighting careers of Eliot Ness.......2001-12-13

The Real Untouchables presents three outstanding productions showcasing the crime fighting careers of Eliot Ness, Melvin Purvis, and Thomas E. Dewey. Ably narrated by James Woods, and blending historical photos and newsreel clips, with commentaries by historians and family members, here are the authentic biographies of unusual men who rose to the occasion and fought against crime during the lawless years of Prohibition. Eliot Ness is best known for the fictional television series based on his "autobiography", a memoir that had a great deal of embellishment. He was a most remarkable man who was incorruptible and fearless in the face of Al Capone and Chicago's organized crime syndicates. Melvin Purvis was an FBI agent who tracked down some of the most notorious bank robber gangs to plague the Midwest. Thomas E. Dewey took on Lucky Luciano and the New York mafia families. The DVD format provides wide screen presentation, character profiles, production notes, chapter selection, as well as cast and crew profiles. The Real Untouchables is a very highly recommended addition to personal, school, and community library DVD collections.
