Fans of '50s science fiction should be pleased by this "big bug" chiller, which offers a fine showcase for the talents of special effects master Willis O'Brien (King Kong). The Black Scorpion follows closely in the multiple footsteps of Them!, produced three years earlier by the same company (Warner Bros.)--again, giant insects threaten mankind, though here a volcano is responsible for unleashing them, and the metropolis in peril is Mexico City. Though direction, acting, and scripting aren't on par with Them!, O'Brien's title creatures (which sport implausible yet creepy faces) are memorably monstrous, especially during hero Richard Denning's visit to their nightmarish underground lair. Warner Bros.' DVD features a surprising amount of extras for an older title. "Stop Motion Masters" is a short tribute to O'Brien by his famed student Ray Harryhausen; also included is O'Brien's dinosaur-laden opening for Irwin Allen's The Animal World documentary, and legendary test footage for two unfilmed monster projects by O'Brien's assistant, Peter Petersen. --Paul Gaita

Description

They're big. They're bad. They scuttle along in caverns miles beneath the Earth - until an earthquake opens paths to the surface. Now these monsters of genus Arachnida are invading our world with deadly force. With top special effects co-designed by King Kong's Willis O'Brien, The Black Scorpion is horror with a sting more lethal than the king-sized ants that overran Los Angeles's sewers in the classic Them! Can humankind survive these invincible juggernauts? That fate rests on the shoulders of Hank Scott (1950s monster movie stalwart Richard Denning) as the creatures rip a train from its tracks, snatch a helicopter from the sky and, in the film's most gripping sequence, battle each other in their subterranean lair. Watch out!

DVD Features:
Featurette:Stop-Motion Masters with Ray Harryhausen; Never-before-seen test footage of the Las Vegas monster and beetlemen; Harryhausen-animated dinosaur sequence from Irwin Allen's 1956 The Animal World
Theatrical Trailer:Giant monsters trailer gallery featuring this film, The Beat from 20,000 Fathoms, Clash of the Titans and The Valley of the Gwangi

3 out of 5 stars Gwangi in a scorpion suit.......2007-04-09

Yep it is the standard big bug 50's sci-fi with a Mexican twist.

We start with the obligatory narrative and a description of what may come. The narrator thinks that volcanoes are evil and bring destruction to farm land. To this land comes a pair of archaeologically strange doctors. They discover a fallen girl (that was just horsing around) and one of the scientists falls in love. The other states "man is born single."

I will not reveal the ugly threat that you already see on the cover. However I think they used them again in "Attack of the Giant Crabs". Also it is fun to look at the technology of the time; they use huge walkie-talkie's, flash cameras (out of flash range), and Bakelite phones. The annoying part of the movie is the kid that will not stay in the car; we all hope he gets eaten early in the story.

5 out of 5 stars 1950'S BLACK SCORPION ROCKS.......2007-03-08

The 1950's Black Scorpion rocks,if you are a 1950's science fictionaholic. This one's got all the bells and whistles of the premo black & white science fiction era. It's fun, its campy, it's a classic!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent queso!.......2007-02-26

Yes, that's some high quality cheese. A giant bug movie set in Mexico and for the most part, the Mexicans are treated with respect and dignity. For the most part. So here's what happens. An earthquake/volcano montage of exploding volcanoes from all over the world occurs in Mexico, near the village of San Lorenzo. Two geologists, one from Mexico and one from the USA travel long and hard to "study" the effects. Along the way, the rescue a baby from an empty, thrashed house with a dead policeman in it! They arrive at San Lorenzo where everyone miraculously speaks perfect English. Thank goodness for us viewers! Anyway, the rumbling earth is not the only thing the locals have to deal with...something is picking off folks one family at a time! So the geologists venture forth, rescue a beautiful woman, discover the giant, scary scorpions, go into a cave full of them ("stay, Juanito, stay!"), get tricked back to Mexico City, devise an electric prod to kill the giant bug and a Mexican Army General in the only laugh-out-loud scene in the movie, kill the bug and all ends well. The American leaves early with the girl and everyone else has to stay behind to clean up.
Not bad at all, really, considering that they re-used a lot of footage and the bug scenes were either pretty good or laughably bad. My six year old declared it "The best movie EVER" so there you go. He was quite concerned about the giant bugs and how to kill them, as they were not effected by bullets. He especially liked the final scene where they get the bug into an arena and attack from all sides. Recommended for Family Night!

3 out of 5 stars Typical silly 50's scifi with uneven special effects.......2006-11-10

I bought this dvd only to get the only remnants of the 50's movie "Animal World" which has dinosaurs, which I remember being thrilled with when I saw it as a kid in the mid 50's. The Black Scorpion wasnt too bad as these giant insect/reptile due to atomic bombs experimentation, etc...
The scorpions were sometimes animated in the Ray Harryhausen style and other times by some lousy cartoonish method, probably when they ran out of money or schedule.
The girl was hot though, as usual she becomes a love interest for the guy who figures out how to kill the damn things.
Lessee, kill a monster, get the girl (kinda like knights slaying the dragon and getting the chick in distress).
One hilarious scene is when the giant scorpion decided to derail and bust up a train. I did a video capture on it and found printed on the locomotive tender.......Lionel Lines...
So you get the picture.
Fun to look at but only once and for laughs.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Awesome.......2006-11-10

This movie was awesome on every level. It had a great cast, great story, and great effects. The transfer and sound on this dvd is top notch as well. If you enjoy old monster movies you'll love the Black Scorpion!

4 out of 5 stars Black Scorpion Movie.......2006-11-05

This is an older movie I had rented on VHS tape several times and wanted to add it to my DVD collection. The story line is typical for a comic book character. I got more out of the movie with the actor's comments enabled during the movie. Some scenes are unnecessary for the story line.

5 out of 5 stars the one that started it all.......2004-12-09

If you are a fan of the Black Scorpion you need to have this one in your collection of DVDs. This is especally true if you are planning to get the box set of the TV series (which is well worth getting) since this is the origin tale of the Black Scorpion. No fan should be without this one.

5 out of 5 stars Stinging Good Fun.......2004-04-27

When looking for a fun action film, a good choice would be a film called Black Scorpion that stars Joan Severance. This movie was followed by a sequel and a television series.

Black Scorpion is the story of a young girl raised by a policeman father whose tactics cause him to ruin his career. Later in life as a cop herself she finds herself in a position where she needs to find justice and the Black Scorpion is born. Using some clothes from an undercover gig as a prostitute, and a few other additions, a costumed vigilante is created. Just as she starts to make her mark a super-villain called The Breathtaker threatens the lives of everyone in the city. It is up to Black Scorpion to save the day.

This movie is a well-balanced mix of action, adventure and humor. The police chief and a con called Argyle (played by Garrett Morris) really help to make this a very enjoyable movie. At the movie's end the viewer is left wanting to see more Black Scorpion adventures. Unfortunately, this is the best that the series gets. This is an R-Rated film for good reason so despite its comic-book feel, this is not one for children.

4 out of 5 stars great escapist fare.......2004-04-24

Black Scorpion always makes me smile. It's a fun movie with a great leading lady and a good sense of fun. I've watched this on more than one rainy Sunday afternoon. A black leather clad superheroine battles the Darth Vader like Breathetaker who wants to make the entire city asthmatic. Silly and sexy cult entertainment.

Sexy Joan Severance puts on black hooker clothes to battle crime as the super-heroine Black Scorpion complete with her own super-powered car. This is great stuff if you love comics and B movies.

5 out of 5 stars a fun sequel.......2004-12-09

As a Black Scorpion I think this a fun sequel that has everything I like about the Black Scorpion Tv series (which is available on DVD in an impressive collection): a strong and intelligent heroine, weird but wonderful bad guys, and lots of B-movie/comic strip action. Good fun!

4 out of 5 stars Return of Black Scorpion.......2004-04-27

When I saw that there was a movie called Black Scorpion 2 I knew that I would have to watch it right away as my wife and I had so enjoyed the first movie.

Joan Severance returns as Darcy Walker, policewoman by day and crime fighter by night. Although her partner has been recast, almost all of the faces from the first movie have returned, including Garret Morris as Argyle.

The film opens with Darcy tracking down the Gangster Prankster (sort of a cross between the Joker and Two-Face) and then busting him as Black Scorpion. Meanwhile a woman scientist has come up with a way to neutralize earthquakes and aftershocks. Unfortunately the Mayor enjoys the federal relief funds that quakes bring in so he sabotages her machine. The result is that it amplifies the quake and the scientist takes on the identity of Aftershock. It is up to Black Scorpion to make the streets safe again.

While not quite up to the level of the first film (the fight scenes are almost comical) it was still a fun film and I would recommend it to anyone who has seen the first Black Scorpion film. I definitely recommend these films to those who like the comic book film genre, although this is not intended for kids (ther is nudity and violence).

5 out of 5 stars when she's good she's good, but when she's bad she's better.......2004-04-22

Some say these type of movies are "bad" and sure they won't win an Oscar, but the Black Scorpion sure will entertain. The Black Scorpion is every cool superhero cliche wrapped up in one beautiful package. Um..Make that TWO beautiful packages. Joan Severance and Michelle Lintel have both played the role. Severance played the Scorpion in the original Black Scorpion movie, and in this sequel, and Lintel took over for the tv show. Who's better? Who cares! I like em both. A LOT! How could any red blooded male decide when you can enjoy em both over and over thanks to Roger Corman and DVD technology? Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars B-movie silliness.......2004-03-06

Don't expect a serious movie, but turn off your brain and enjoy the wonders of this flick. Sexy, silly, and worth your time if you love B-movies. I've got to give it five stars for fun.

5 out of 5 stars bad, but that's what makes it so good.......2004-01-14

The Black Scorpion movies and series are very funny and sexy and they aren't to be taken seriously, but are great escapism. The villans from this one return for the series which is now available on DVD and had Adam West and Frank Gorshin too! Watch these DVDs and enjoy the explosions, the beautiful women and laugh your butt off!

4 out of 5 stars three TV episodes edited into a movie.......2004-05-25

Three episodes of the show were edited together to make this movie for folks like me. I enjoyed Black Scorpion 1 and 2, but I hadn't seen the show. Sting gave me a chance to see what I'd missed. I watched and ended up enjoying it. Michelle Lintel is a doll. Scott Valentine is well cast. Frank Gorshin is superb. Sting really grew on me. I ultimately bought the complete TV show, but it made Sting obsolete. The same three episodes are included in that set too. I think the complete series is a great buy. You might want to get that instead of Sting. It's more expensive, but a great collection for Scorpion fans.

3 out of 5 stars The TV show, Inspired by Movies, Becomes a Movie.......2004-03-10

Michelle Lintel revisits her television role as the crime fighter Black Scorpion. While this is a movie, it plays like three television episodes placed end to end. The film opens with her undercover and running into another undercover cop. The other cop becomes her new partner. He transferred in specifically so he could catch Black Scorpion.

Black scorpion must first go up against Firearm, a villain with a gun for an arm. He is after the mayor because of a gun bill that was passed.

Next Black Scorpion blinds a photographer who becomes Flashpoint, a villain bent on exposing Black Scorpions identity.

Finally she must go against Clockwise, a villain improperly jailed for twenty-five years. Now that he is out he wants vengeance on all those who did him wrong (Frank Gorshin does an excellent job as this villain).

At the film's end, you do not feel like you have watched a movie, but a television show. Nowhere near as good as the original film. The fighting is more professional wrestling than martial arts and the banter, especially in the Firearm battles, is so bad you have to hear it. Still, it is some reasonably good and fun crime fighting.

4 out of 5 stars "Sting ( 2002) offers similiar Plot with a few new tricks!.......2003-03-24

This is the 3rd installment of the Black scorpion Movie series. First there was the "The Black Scorpion and then there was B.S Part II (Aftershock). Out of the 3 I would have to say "Aftershock" still remains my favorite. "Sting of the Black Scorpion" is a 2002 Film....Also "Michelle Lintel" from the T.V series is the "Black Scorpion" not "Joan Severance" in this film. Although I thought Joan did better in the first two feature films conveying the part, Michelle definitley looks better. "Sting" is basically a reproduction of the first two films but is unconvincing. Why? because none of the same actors are in the film. To Replace one character is one thing, but to replace all is another. Even "Arguile" was a different actor her accompass. The only thing that was really a surprise in this film is that her "Scorpion Mobile" was destroyed and she got a New Model White Corvette to roll with. And when it transformed, the "Scorpion Mobile" was better equipped with a new look with some new tricks. Basically the story line was quite similiar to the previous two films. There was 3 villians in this film..FireArm, Clockwise & Blinder or something like that. Well anyway she had to defeat these guys before they took over "The City Of Angels. The film is very Quirky as the others whre in the past. And offers alot of action comedy..which is definitley worth the purchase. You will laugh throughout this silly irony althrough this film. "Roger Corman" didn't fell on his attempt to reserect the movie franchise with this 3rd installment.

Michelle Lintel is the funnest tv super heroine ever She's great to look at too. if you are a fan of Black Scorpion then you gotta get this collection. All the episdes of Black Scorpion are here and the box set is almost as very nicely put together as Ms Lintel. Well almost. She's pretty impressive. The episodes look fantastic and everything you loved about the show is here. Lots of campy humor, a great car, sinister over the top bad guys, and Ms Lintel kickin' major butt. This set is a must for B movie and comic fans. Thanks for the fun Michelle and thanks to you too Mr Corman.

4 out of 5 stars Roger Corman's Lifetime Work.......2004-02-18

At the time of its filming, Roger Corman described the Black Scorpion tv series as his ultimate life's work. He believed in it so much that he poured his life savings into making all 22 episodes without going through the usual procedure of making a pilot episode and approaching television channels. As a result there was a two-year gap between the filming of the series and its first airing. Was it worth it?

First of all, what was the goal of the series? It was meant as a respectful homage to the 60's Batman series, combined with the sexy fighting females so common in Corman's films. The bat became a scorpion, the man became a woman. The tongue-in-cheek humour and camp nature of Batman were to be retained.

As a crime-fighting icon, Black Scorpion is an immediate success. While the 60's needed a male hero, our 21st Century is better fitted with a powerful female to bring law and order. Michelle Lintel proves to be an adequate replacement to Joan Severance, who played Black Scorpion in the previous films. Her self-confident entrances with corny jokes are the equal of Batman at his best. The colourful villains are made even better by their inherant lack of credibility. This is escapism at its best, not reality! The references to Batman are strengthened by casting Adam West as Breathtaker and Frank Gorshin as Clockwise. Other elements used as sub-plots to the series are the incompetent police force, the corrupt politicians, and the budding love affair between Black Scorpion's alter-ego and a police detective.

However, the series has weaknesses that need to be addressed. Despite the large budget, the car chase scenes are constantly re-used, which I find grating. Gangster Prankster's character is based so closely on the Joker that Corman can be accused of plagiarism. But the greatest weakness is that the comic elements are overdone. It's one thing that the police are incapable of dealing with super-villians -- that's why Black Scorpion is needed -- but it's another to portray the police as layabouts who throw baseballs about in the station instead of trying to solve crimes. Scott Valentine is a credible detective, but Shane Powers and Steven Kravitz are totally out of place. The running humour between the scientific genius (B.T.) and his scatty girlfriend (Enya Flack) is so silly that it just isn't funny. How could a man like that love a woman like that?

Overall, the series is a success, and the DVD box set is good value for money. It's a crime that until now Black Scorpion has rarely been aired and still remains unknown. If Roger Corman has any money left, he should make a second, improved series of Black Scorpion, toning down the sillier humour. The series has the potential to become a classic, but based on the evidence of the first series, it isn't quite there yet.

5 out of 5 stars classic comic book fun.......2004-01-03

Black Scorpion is a flash back to the style of the comic books of the 60's with one major exception: Michelle Lintel is far hotter than anything in those old comics! If you like old comics and also love beautiful women then this will do the trick. It's a beautiful DVD set too. I can't get over how great this set looks!

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Entertaining!.......2003-12-08

This is a great show and a wonderfuly packaged box set with great extras. Yes it is incredibly cheesy, but that's what makes it so fun! Michael Lintel is BEAUTIFUL, Scott Valentine is perfect as her partner, the villans are classic campy comic book characters, the vixens are too and are HOT, ADAM WEST ROCKS, FRANK GORSHIN IS AWESOME, and the writing is extremely fun and humorous. Check out Black Scorpion the movie and Black Scorpion II if you are a fan of the show. I enjoyed the films and fell in love with the show too. For fun escapist 'B movie' styled viewing you can't beat the Black Scorpion.
