After having a surprise hit playing Dracula in Love at First Bite, George Hamilton seized the moment and spoofed another movie hero: Zorro. In fact, he plays two characters: the heroic Don Diego, who fights Spanish tyranny in Old California in his secret identity as Zorro, and Diego's long-absent brother, Bunny Wigglesworth, a man totally comfortable with his sexual identity and unafraid of accessorizing the Zorro outfit by rendering it in purple. When the swashbuckler is injured, he turns his sword over to the swishbuckler, who is just as good a swordsman, though a few shades less fiery. Some of the gay humor is heavy-handed, but Hamilton easily handles the comedy demands of the dual roles, and has strong support from Ron Leibman as the chief bad guy. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars I'll save you a search.......2007-05-13

Of all the people who rated this movie, only 4 gave it less than 4 stars. 2 could not get the DVD to work on their $29 Wal-Mart player, one would not know funny if it hit him/her/it broadside, and one was too young to understand classic humor. The rest of us thought it is one of the funniest movies ever made. A movie you could watch multiple times. George Hamilton is very underappreciated as a comedy actor. He is almost constantly funny in word or expression in this movie (Even better than Love at First Bite). This was the last generation's Jack Sparrow (Depp must have studied Hamilton). The rest of the cast is really good too, but it is George's movie. I am glad it was released on DVD. And I guess I am just one of those people who buys the movie for the movie rather than to see what else is on the disc

"Zorro, the Gay Blade"

Always New, Always Funny

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Zorro, the Gay Blade" was made in 1981, quite a while ago. This is one funny movie--it was funny then and it is funny now. Made before political correctness was so important, it says all those things we can't say today. Every time I watch it, I see something I missed before.
When the new Spanish governor begins to take control and hold the peasants in tight rein, Don Diego Vega becomes Zorro, the man who rights wrongs and proudly carries his sword. But when Vega sprains his ankle and dos not know how he can continue his campaign, his long lost twin brother--who had been sent off to the British navy to make a man of him--suddenly returns. He is flamboyant and his name is now Bunny Wigglesworth. Bunny agrees to act in his brother's place but not without making some adjustments. Instead of wearing the traditional black suit, he insists on lemon, scarlet and plum and he wants to use a whip.
I watched this Zorro again yesterday and I was surprised that it hasn't aged like I have. It is a wonderful parody of the Zorro films and TV series. As a satire it is unique in that it has its own theme, its own characters and its own plot. There is no romance, no grandiose special effects---it doesn't need them. It fascinates simply and it is wacky and accessible.
George Hamilton is Zorro and this is probably the best role he has ever played. In fact George Hamilton is Zorro and Zorro--he plays both roles--that of Don Diego Vega and that of Bunny Wigglesworth. We may find it hard to imagine Hamilton doing slapstick but he does it well--in fact he is superb just as is his supporting cast of Brenda Vaccaro, Lauren Hutton and Ron Liebman.
Stereotypes abound in the film and the idea of gay Zorro giving one liners is irresistible. There are several classic scenes in the film. One is the masked ball when the Alcalde (governor) plans to catch Zorro. All of the guests arrive in Zorro costumes and the result is like a house of mirrors.
Some of the performances are over the top. Ron Liebman as the Alcalde overacts but he can still bring a grin to the face of the viewer. When the Alcalde and Zorro go at it, you get a laugh a minute. Lauren Hutton as the love interest with a bit of liberal feminist touch but the comedy of the movie overshadows it. Brenda Vaccaro as Florinda, the wife of the Alcalde and the fact that she lusts for Zorro adds a little spice.
It makes no difference that the humor is simple and that the plot s predictable--this is a very funny movie that shows there is more than one way to tell a story and even if not totally successful, t can still be a lot of fun.
The movie is packed with sword fights, injustice and cross dressing as well innuendos, inside jokes and moments of hilarity.
The fact that Hamilton is able to make fun of himself says a lot about the film. Here is a colorful and dashing comedy so suspend the belief that whips are more powerful than rifles and that the gay Zorro can challenge an army. Just sit back and ready to laugh and enjoy the movie for what it is.
One note to think about though--does Hamilton ever lose his suntan? As for the gay blade in the title--the writers have evidently returned to the original meaning of the word gay and then gave a new meaning to the newer meaning of the word. The movie is very gay about a gay man and that fits both definitions of the word.

5 out of 5 stars Hysterical movie, BUT... .......2007-02-27

This is a hysterical movie! The subject matter may offend some people, but in my opinion the biggest offense of this movie is that it is not Closed Caption, or Subtitled! I remember seeing this movie back in the 80's and laughed my butt off. So, when I saw it again on DVD at Amazon, I just had to buy it and share the laugher with my wife. Unfortunately, my wife -who is Deaf- could not share in the experience because DVD was not Closed Caption, or Subtitled. It's really sad that even after the 1990 Federal Law (ADA), which requires movies to be accessible to the Deaf, they chose not to Closed Caption, or Subtitled this hilarious movie. Shame on them! I only wish the Gay Blade could enforce justice in our modern times!!

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best.......2007-02-22

If you are easily offended, this is NOT the movie for you, but if you love spoofs and understand the humor of someone like Mel Brooks, then you'll love this movie. George Hamilton is at his best as Don Diego Vega, who returns to California and takes up his father's mantle to be Zorro, defender, as he puts it, of the 'defenseless'. Don Diego's heart is in the right place, although his foot is not, and he is forced to give up being Zorro to his twin brother, Ramon, who joined the British Navy, and prefers to go by the name Bunny Wigglesworth.

Hamilton is absolutely hilarious in the dual role, and Bunny's disguise as a woman is simply to die for. All the actors in this spoof are excellent, especially Brenda Vaccaro as the love hungry Florinda who only does 'it' once a year with her husband, the new alcalde, Esteban. Remarkably Ron Leibman did not lose his voice with all the shouting he has to do as Esteban, annoying, but also funny. Lauren Hutton plays Charlotte Taylor Wilson, a woman suffragette who has come to California to help the downtrodden. I'll never hear that name without hearing Hamilton's atrocious Spanish accent make it nearly unpronouncable.

With the old-fashioned movie score, and all the right elements of an old Hollywood swashbuckler, somehow this version goes hilariously off the rails. You're never sure how that happens, but it makes for one of the funniest movies ever produced that didn't carry the Mel Brooks name. If you're just wanting to watch a movie that is light-hearted, silly, and funny, then this is the movie to see. If you're uptight and looking to be offended, please don't buy this movie and spoil it for those of us who just want to be entertained without being preached at!

Antonio Bandaras is the far best Zorro actor. His accent brings life to the folk hero. Catherine Zeta-Jones is perfect for the part she plays.
Over all the movie is great for those who like action movies as well as romance. Bring on Antonio as Zorro!

4 out of 5 stars Just A Lot of Swashbuckling Fun!.......2006-09-20

"The Mask of Zorro" is a rare case of an action movie that doesn't break any boundaries, yet doesn't seem formulaic. Zorro is the legendary fictional hero who protects the people against tyrannical villains, usually clownish Mexican soldiers and greedy bureaucrats.

As most are aware, the story begins when Diego De La Vega, aka Zorro, (Anthony Hopkins) does one last good deed for the locals by bringing the greedy Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson) to justice. But Montero finds Zorro's secret lair and exacts heart-braking vengeance upon him, Diego's daughter is stolen and is imprisoned for twenty years. Later, the daughter grows into the beautiful Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who knows nothing of her true past.

The other arc that intertwines is that of Alejandro Murietta (Antonio Banderas), who also loses everything when confronted by one of Montero's goons, the ruthless Captain Love (Matt Letscher). Alejandro and Diego, now escaped from prison, team up to bring both men to justice, and do so with the presence of a hero long-absent, but never forgotten---Zorro!

The acting in this movie is perfect for an action/adventure, because the actors bring more to the screen than the script probably suggested. Banderas brings so many layers to the character of Alejandro: first a clownish thug, then a man who can only quench his thirst for vengeance by becoming a charming noble. Hopkins, as always, has a believeable screen presence, and always helps us see what a tortured soul he really is, yet manages to keep his patient resolve. And Catherine Zeta Jones in her pre-Oscar role is more than a damsel in distress. In fact, Elena Montero is never a damsel at all. She's a sexy, feisty woman who never loses courage in the face of turmoil. She's really an exceptional heroine. Martin Campbell (the director) never allows his female characters to be useless pawns (see "Golden-Eye"), and this is no exception.

The villains, however, are also better than expected. Stuart Wilson worked with director Martin Campbell in "No Escape" as a cannibalistic gang-leader, who frankly sent chills down my spine everytime I saw him. Here, his character of Montero isn't necessarily evil, but has no problem taking extreme measures to satisfy his own greed. The underrated success of this film, in my opinion, is the performance of Matt Letscher as Captain Love. Love is a sadistic soldier whose viciousness is matched by his exceptional swordsman skills. Every scene when Banderas and Letscher are together is simply amazing, because so much has been established that we can barely stand the tension between them. The obligatory moment where Love and Alejandro (as the new Zorro) finally staredown for a final fight is simply breathtaking, because so much anger and determination has climaxed to this one moment! It's really an impressive moment---so simple, but so heart-pounding.

But beyond the acting is also a high-quality production. The sets and costuming are authentic (no "Wild Wild West" anachronisms here), the music by James Horner is one his best score's to date, the sound effects are crisp and sharp, the photography is gorgeous as it captivates the beauty of the red sunsets, and the action sequences are awesome! The swordfights are well-choreographed, and never use digital effects to "enhance" the action. There is a neat horse chase, and the final sequence in a Mexican mine is intense and breath-taking!

"The Mask of Zorro" is what action/adventure should be. Funny, sexy, fast-paced, well-acted, and exciting all amidst a top-notch production! Trust me on this, this movie is NEVER boring! Because the DVD doesn't cost much, and is packed with excellent Extras...you can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Zorro: The Next Generation.......2006-09-03

The Mask of Zorro brings to the screen the story of who else, but the well-known Mexican hero.
The setting is California in the transitional period following Spain's withdrawal from Mexico and Zorro, due to old age, can no longer defend the people against oppression and injustice. Subsequently, he needs to find someone to replace him or else the legend of Zorro will die with him...
The film combines romance, drama, and adventure in such a way that it spells success.
Moreover, the fascinating culture and traditions of pre-union California as well as the historical time period in question are presented very well in the film.
Needless to say, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100%! Their great talent and chemistry clearly shows, thus providing an entertaining film that can be watched over and over again.
The setting, the dialogues, the music and the costumes are all wonderful!
Very well written and very well presented, it is a movie definitely worth watching, as it will surely put you in a good mood!

The Zorro brand of hot-blooded derring-do returns with The Legend of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the roles that brought them stardom with The Mask of Zorro. Now married for ten years and parents to young rascal Joaquim (charming Adrian Alonso, perhaps being set up for a future Son of Zorro), dashing swordsman Alejandro (Banderas, a Spaniard playing a Mexican) and sultry spitfire Elena De La Vega (Zeta-Jones, a Welshwoman playing a Spaniard) abruptly divorce, sending Alejandro on a drunken binge--which only gets worse when he learns Elena is being wooed by the mysterious Armand (Rufus Sewell, a Brit playing a Frenchman). Little does Alejandro know that Elena has ulterior motives, and that a worldwide conspiracy and a secret weapon will soon threaten the integrity of the U.S. The Legend of Zorro has way too much plot, leaving room for only two genuinely preposterous donnybrooks and a handful of lackluster brawls. Banderas and Zeta-Jones flash a bit of their considerable charisma, but by and large they (and the movie as a whole) are on autopilot. Not awful, but lacking any real spark. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars It's more suitable for kids than adults.......2007-06-28

The action scenes are childish and funny. The plot is just an excuse to joke around. It's still enjoyable and worth watching once. The Mask of Zorro is much more exciting.

4 out of 5 stars Fun to Watch If Relaxed.......2007-06-22

Antonio Banderas is a wonderful actor (not to mention the prowess of Catherine Zeta-Jones), so I knew from the start that there was a good chance I would like this movie. At the beginning the action sword fighting and running scenes are rather unrealistic, but I thought enjoyable to watch.

It's not the deepest drama or action movie you will watch, but that is just fine if you go into this movie for more of an "easy-to-watch" action/comedy.

When you sit down to watch this movie, please be relaxed. It's just a movie, and if you start to think of the historical inaccuracies you might become very frustrated. Some examples are (don't worry, no real spoilers)
*Keep in mind, this movie takes place in 1850
1) Abraham Lincoln appeared at the end - (Lincoln was president 1861-1865)
2) There is some talk of the Confederacy - (Confederacy was formed in 1861
3) General Bouregard meets an untimely demise - (He died in 1893)
Have fun and find more on your own.

If you like light, easy to watch movies - buy
If you like light movies but don't want to buy unless it's great - rent
If you want serious - don't watch
If you can't stand historical inaccuracies - forget you heard about this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Legend of Zorro.......2007-05-07

This is probably one of my favorite films and I ordered this on DVD, as I only had it on VHS and it has been watched MANY times. I love the actor, like who wouldn't, unless they were dead or in a coma. The action and story are great, with LOTS of action and humor that I really liked. I,
also, have the sequel and TRULY hope there will be more to come.

3 out of 5 stars The Horse And The Kid Steal The Show.......2007-04-27

This review refers to the Widescreen Special DVD edition of "The Legend of Zorro"...

Kids will have no trouble sitting through this less then worthy sequel to the 1998 "Mask Of Zorro". With it's PG rating it has lost the fire and passion between the stars(Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones) and the storyline. It was definitely lacking in several areas that fans might have expected to find. There was plenty of swashbuckling action, explosions and acrobatics to keep the younger set invovled, but a bit lackluster and predictable. On the up side, it's worth the view as in the sequel to "Romancing the Stone","Jewel of the Nile" we have already come to love these characters and it's nice to see the story continue.Only not as good as Jewel. It did provided a few very funny moments that were mostly provided by the horse(think "Cat Ballou"), and the young son of the De La Vega's was a charmer and added a reason to care about what happens to the family.

The story picks up ten years after the first. California Statehood is in need of Zorro's help. The people want it, but there are a few who will stop at nothing to block it. These men are dangerous and evil and their plans include terrorizing and destruction. Meanwhile the De La Vegas are having problems of their own. Elena tells the big Z she wants him home, it's too risky for him to continue his heroic ways, and their son needs him to be a father. Zorro's first priority is the people, so Elena calls it splitsville. When Alejandro/Zorro, see her involved with the man who is behind all the evilness, he falls apart. But when his son and wife's life are in jeopardy, he heeds the call to action once more. It is then we see some of the sparks fly between the two. In a PG manner of course.

The DVD is gorgeous. Beautiful picture in anamorphic widescreen, great sound and some great special features. Commentary, deleted scenes, Behind the scenes featurettes, English and French subtitles(although I thought it strange there are no Spanish subtitles). There is also a full screen edition available for those who prefer.

Banderas and Zeta-Jones, although nice to look at just seemed to lack the chemistry in this one. I also very much missed the presence of the great Anthony Hopkins. After all saving the family AND the people of California all at once, could take a Knight in shining armour.

The first Zorro was a film I could watch over and over. This one, clocking in at just over two hours, had just a few to many Z's for me...Zzzzzzzzzzz, a bit of a snooze-fest. But I think it may be a good rental for that rainy day when the kids are cooped up in the house......Laurie

2 out of 5 stars Silly, Just Silly.......2007-04-14

There is only one word to describe this flick - SILLY. Good for 10 year olds and younger. Story weak. Acting mediocre. The action sequences look very "staged" and unnatural and are unbelievable. One glaring error. This movie is set in early California, before it becomes a state. Near the end of the film they show an American flag - and it has 50 STARS on it!!! Mama Mia!! Couldn't even get that right. The title should have been "The Legend of Zero".

When they say they don't make 'em like they used to, they're talking about 20th Century Fox's exhilarating The Mark of Zorro, starring Tyrone Power as the caped one, Linda Darnell as his love interest, and Basil Rathbone at his scurrilous best as Zorro's nemesis. More textured than the 1920 original with Douglas Fairbanks, this 1940 version has Don Diego/Zorro (Powers) returning from Madrid to defend his father and rally the caballeros (noblemen) against Los Angeles's corrupt new governor (J. Edward Bromberg), intent on taxing the peons to death.

If this all sounds like an Old California redo of the classic Adventures of Robin Hood, that's because it is. Powers has a field day as Don Diego, the "fancy clown" betrothed to the governor's niece, Lolita (Darnell). Don Diego the effete snob performs silly parlor tricks, peers through pince-nez, and yawns disdainfully at one and all. Power's cowardly alter ego is so believable, his transformation to masked superhero becomes all the more thrilling. Imagine Captain Pasquale's (Rathbone) shock when, in the film's brilliantly choreographed showdown, this annoying fop turns out to be a world-class swordsman.

Director Rouben Mamoulian, known for great period melodramas, does a skillful job of alternating garrison intrigue with big action scenes, including a nighttime ride that climaxes with Zorro on horseback leaping off a bridge. In the romantic highlight, Lolita confides her innermost desires to a suspiciously worldly friar. The first-rate supporting cast includes Gale Sondergaard as the governor's treacherous wife and the frog-voiced Eugene Pallette (Friar Tuck in The Adventures of Robin Hood) as a padre in cahoots with the masked one. Technically, this retelling rates an unqualified "Wow!" The cinematography, obviously influenced by Goya, makes full use of chiaroscuro shadows, and Alfred Newman's Latin-flavored score is irresistibly rousing and romantic. --Glenn Lovell

Description

This swashbuckling remake of the silent classic stars Tyrone Power as the dashing masked avenger who single-handedly saves Los Angeles from Spanish despots. Don Diego Vega (Power) is summoned home from his elite training corps in Spain to California, where he finds his father deposed and the people living in tyranny. Disguised as Zorro, a sword-wielding mystery man dressed in black, he works to restore his father to power and return the tax money stolen by the villains (J. Edward Bromberg, Basil Rathbone). He even finds time to romance the ruling tyrant's beautiful niece (Linda Darnell).

5 out of 5 stars The Mark of Zorro.......2007-06-25

Under Mamoulian's sure-footed direction, only Power could one-up Douglas Fairbanks with this rousing remake of the 1920 silent classic--still the zingiest and most technically dazzling "Zorro" of the bunch. Power is so adept at shifting from the slightly doltish Don Diego to the heroic masked avenger that it's difficult to imagine anyone else in the role. Among the fabulous supporting cast, Rathbone stands out as Zorro's loathsome nemesis, Bromberg and Gale Sondergaard are delightful as the ruthless regents, and Darnell is winning as the love interest. Daring horseback rides, thrilling duels, exquisite cinematography...What more could you want in a swashbuckler?

5 out of 5 stars Age of the TRUE swashbucklers.......2007-06-13

While I perfer my "oldies" in the true black and white format, it was very good to see a very good colorized version. I heartily recommend this movie to anyone who is in search of real romantic adventure. The cast is perfect and the acting superb. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the movie, minus one for the annoying commercial.......2007-05-22

First, I'll agree with all the other posters on the quality of the story and acting. Swashbuckling, action fun in a way that simply doesn't get made anymore. If you enjoyed Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, you'll like this one too - two of the actors from Robin Hood even appear in Zorro in almost identical roles.

So, now to the annoying feature that lost this particular version a star: that stupid anti-piracy ad in the beginning of the colorized version that you can't skip past. I appreciate having the option to watch either the color version or the B&W, but if I have to sit through that 30-second torture every time I want to watch the color version, I think I'll stick to the B&W one.

5 out of 5 stars EL ROBIN HOOD DE CALIFORNIA.......2007-05-14

Rouben Mamoulian's THE MARK OF ZORRO, adapted from The Mark of Zorro, a book Johnston McCulley wrote in 1919, is one of these films I discovered between the age of 10 and 15 on TV and which are the reason why I love movies so much. The action is so fast that you'll forget after five minutes that THE MARK OF ZORRO is in black and white.

Linda Darnell was 17 when she starred in the film, the exact age of Lolita Quintero, Zorro's love, and she still ignites the screen. Basil Rathbone is the villain by essence, the guy you'll love to hate and Tyrone Power plays to the perfection the double role of Don Diego Vega/Zorro, the coward and the hero. I showed the film last night to my children (9 and 12) and they simply loved it. As I did some 35 years ago.

A DVD zone your library.

5 out of 5 stars Just simply the best Zorro ever.......2007-02-12

Wow! What a story, what acting, what adventure. The color was gorgeous, have not watched the B & W side, probably won't either. Linda Darnell was perfect for the leading lady to Ty. No complaints come to mind. When purchasing, get the dvd with the special features and the 6 lobby card replicas. You won't be disappointed!

1 out of 5 stars No boxed set?.......2007-02-16

As discussed by other reviewers, this was a great show. I never tired of watching reruns on the Disney Channel. Great stories, great acting.
I'd probably guess that the transfer to DVD is exceptional, either in black & white or colorized.
    So why only 1 star?
Please..... Eight 1/2 hour episodes released as volumes @ close to $50 bucks a pop? Where on earth is the logic to this for the consumer. I must be missing something here, and i'd hope someone could enlighten me and other consumers. Boxed sets are the norm. Disney could charge $100 for the season and i would still buy it. But 8 episodes for 50 bucks? Hey, don't do me any favors.

5 out of 5 stars Colorized Versions of Already Released Episodes.......2007-01-06

Buyer Beware: These are NOT different episodes from those that Guy Williams' fans already have on VHS tapes. Each of the VHS tapes (released years ago) had a title for each tape (which contained about 6 episodes each). Those titles do NOT appear on these dvds. However, they are the exact same episodes.

What you get are "new" colorized copies and better picture quality (although the VHS tapes were fine quality).

I'm not knocking these dvds. I just want to pass along this warning. I may not have jumped at the Christmas gift of a "deal" on all 6 dvds had I known that I was not getting any new episodes.

All of that said, Guy Williams is masterful in every way in this series. His allegedly deaf valet steals the show many times. Sgt. Garcia is the Sgt. Schultz (Hogan's Heroes) of this series. It all works, in every episode.

For you fans who followed Guy Williams from here into the additionally immortal Lost In Space TV series, there is another treat in here. Jonathan Harris (Dr. Zachary Smith on Lost In Space) appears in the Mountain Man set of episodes, as a dastardly, conniving sneak. I guess someone saw how well he did it, and signed him up as the permanent "Special Guest Star" on Lost In Space.

Guy Williams died of a brain aneurism, in 1989 in Argentina. Though born in the Bronx, he had reportedly felt burned by Hollywood. After relocating to Argentina, he did some work with a traveling circus as Zorro. In Hollywood, he had also starred as Sinbad and as the sword-wielding Miles Hendon in a Disney version of The Prince and the Pauper.

Guy Williams was the first of the Lost In Space actors to die, followed only recently by Jonathan Harris. Sadly, their first public reunion was after 1989.

Guy Williams, born Armando Joseph Catalano, may have been one of the most untapped strong-male (a true 6'3") lead actors that Hollywood neglected, to their loss and ours.

5 out of 5 stars Why the Marketplace.......2006-12-16

    E. Davis said: "I'm not sure why Amazon doesn't distribute it directly, but was able to order it from a Marketplace seller."

    Here is why:
Amazon doesn't distribute this directly because it (along with the other 4 DVDs of season 1) is currently a Disney Movie Club "Exclusive Title" (This is indicated by a gold logo in the lower right corner of the cover). This means the only "official" place you can purchase this is through that venue (currently at half the cost of most Marketplace sellers). The Marketplace sellers are obtaining theirs from a membership they have or through another DMC member. This violates a portion of the agreement you make when you join the Disney Movie Club which states: "Membership is intended for personal use only. Movies purchased through the Disney Movie Club are not intended for resale or other commercial purposes."

That said... This is an EXCELLENT series! While this IS a colorized version and my preferences run towared the original B/W it is some of the best colorization I've seen. I'm looking forward to the second season.

    5 out of 5 stars Delighted, but..........2006-11-28

I was delighted to learn of the availability of this great series. I'm not sure why Amazon doesn't distribute it directly, but was able to order it from a Marketplace seller. However, I wish that Amazon would have linked it to Season One: Vols. 2,3, and 4, which I found through a customer's Zorro Listmania, and was able to order from the same Marketplace seller. It would have been nice to order all volumes at once, and if it wasn't for the customer's Listmania, I wouldn't have known the other volumes were available. 5 Stars for Disney's Zorro series, 3.5 Stars to Amazon for keeping customers in the dark.

5 out of 5 stars The real Zorro has come back!.......2006-09-10

When I was a kid, Guy Williams was (and will be forever) the real Zorro. I never missed an episode. The stories are exciting and fun with lots of humor and a supporting cast that has never been surpassed. Everyone is here - lovable Sgt.Garcia, clever Bernardo, the "wicked" Commendante (who somehow never seemed quite mean enough, however dastardly his deeds), crusty Don Alejandro, and the horse,Tornado. Missing is the dim-witted Corproal Reyes, but he didn't show up this early in the series, so just wait a while and he'll show up. What more could I ask? True, some purists may be unhappy with the colorized episodes in place of the original black & white, but the colorization here is not bad, and does nothing to detract. Enjoy this Disney classic! There are four more discs for season one, and you will surely want these as well.

5 out of 5 stars The man behind the mask.......2007-04-05

"There are many who would proudly wear the mask of Zorro."

In 1995, Martin Campbell exploded onto the Hollywood action film-making scene with Goldeneye, a film that revitalized the stumbling Bond franchise and made Pierce Brosnan a star. In 1998, he released what stands as possibly his best film (even including the fantastic Casino Royale, which cemented Campbell as a Bond film director for the ages) which introduced modern audiences to Zorro, the Robin Hood of 19th-century Mexico and inspiration for Bob Kane's Batman. The Mask of Zorro not only serves as something of a sequel to the Tyrone Power-starring The Mark of Zorro (1940) and throwback to the romance adventure films of its ilk, it is quite simply a brilliant adventure movie that can stand alongside the best work of Fairbanks and Flynn.

Beginning in the 1820's, on the even of Spain's departure from Mexico, "Mask" tells of Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins), a Spanish nobleman who protects the opressed as Zorro from the greedy Govenor of California, Raphael Montero. After one final desperate attempt to capture Zorro ends with the hero riding victorious once more into the sunset, things go horribly wrong for the masked swashbuckler. Robbed of his title, lands, and his loved ones, the man once known as Zorro is thrown into prison and left to rot for decades as Montero sails back to spain with Diego's daughter in his arms.

Fast-forward twenty years, Diego escapes from prison only to find Alehandro (Antonio Banderas), a petty thief reeling from his brother's murder at the hands of the bloodthirsty US soldier-turned-mercenary Captain Harrison Love. When it becomes apparent that Love has been hired by Montero, now returned from Spain, for some sinister purpose that once against threatens the peace and prosperity of California, the old hero and the young rogue join forces in a quest for justice and revenge. It then becomes apparent the Montero has brought Diego's daughter, Elena (played by the scorching Catherine Zeta Jones), who remembers nothing of her real father, and things get complicated.

What makes the film work more than anything else is the character dynamics, both hero and villain. Banderas and Hopkins share a master/pupil relationship as Diego trains Alehandro in the ways and philosphies Zorro used to protect the people, and their parallels and personality clashes are well-written and acted with a beautiful on-screen chemistry. Likewise, the sizzling romantic tension between Banderas and Zeta Jones works well on every level, bringing a 90's sexuality to the classical hero/heroine banter seen in films like The Adventures of Robin Hood. And the villains, one an obsessed man who geniunely believes he is doing what's right, the other a borderline-psychotic, bring a contrast (and at times, even depth) not usually seen in antagonists in action films. The build-up to a dual clash between each hero and their opposite number is a perfect example of creating a path to satisfying payoff.

And the payoff is beautiful - sword duels, horse chases, explosions, and fist fights. No one set piece stands out simply because all are so beautifully-coreographed, imaginitively-staged, and perfectly-shot. The final clash at El Dorado demonstrates some of the finest action of its kind in decades. Each scene's musical accompaniment, provided by veteran composer James Horner (Aliens, Braveheart, Titanic) brings an extra level of melancholy to a forgotten father, a pounding cadence to a hectic escape, or a layer of sensuality to a provacative dance number, and everything in-between.

With the extravagant production values, larger than life heroics, and lavish clashes of heroes and villains, The Mask of Zorro does so many adventure films of its kind have failed to do since the days of The Seahawk. An imformative fist-ful of extras and a solid transfer round out a package that no swashbuckling fan should be without. Now if only someone could get Campbell working on that new Prince of Persia movie.

    5 out of 5 stars Horray...It's Zorro!.......2007-03-10

The plot of the film is interesting yet easy to follow. Zorro is trying to save the Peasants of Mexico from the despotic rule of Don Rafael Montero...the governor of California. Montero is determined to make California independent from Mexico, but at the expense of the peasants whom he turns into slaves in his gold mine.

A hero should be brave, loyal, just, wise, strong, a ladies man, and so much more. In "The Mask of Zorro" these character traits of the hero are brought to life so well by the makers of the film in the persons of both Zorro (Diego De La Vega) and Alejandro who will become the new Zorro.

One of the best examples of this is when Diego is training Alejandro to take his place. He is so wise because he knows Alejandro even better than Alejandro knows himself! Diego is also wise enough to know that it takes more than just fighting skills to be a hero. That is why he trains alejandro to be a gentleman...a trait that Alejandro will need later on in order to succeed.

The action scenes in the movie are superb...although somewhat unrealistic. The viewer is always on the edge of his/her seat waiting to see the outcome of the various sword fights. My favorite battle scene is the one between Captain Love and Alejandro. I can't say why because I don't want to give away the ending of the movie. However, I doubt that anyone who watches this scene will be dissappoited.

One "battle" that I found very interesting is the one between Alejandro and Elena. I love the irony found in this scene. Alejandro at first declines to fight Elena saying that he doesn't have time to instruct her. Elena reveals that she has had the "proper instruction" since she was four! Then, Elena and Alejandro are dueling with swords but at the same time are kissing! We can see that all at once, Elena wants to defend the man that she believes is her father, but cannot deny her feelings for Alejandro. At the end of the scene, something very unexpected happens, but once again, I can not reveal this to you. I just can't spoil it for you!

In this movie we have such a good balnce between action, adventure, romance, and even some comedy believe it or not. I am a Spanish Teacher and I showed this film to my Spanish Classes as a way to demonstrate how Mexico was once ruled by Spain. My students range in age from 13-18 and almost all of them were captivated by the movie and their eyes were glued to the TV screen! They clapped at the end of the movie and were asking me so many questions.

I would reccomend this movie to anyone really. Go out there and buy it or rent it...you won't be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars Fun and exciting.......2007-01-11

Film is fun, exciting and offers two of the most enjoyable to watch stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding action.......2006-12-13

Everyone did great job in this movie from the to the horse, to the actors.
This is non stop action. And the sword fighting looks so real!

3 out of 5 stars Satire or Commentary? You decide.......2007-04-03

It's hard to know what to make of "O Fantasma" (The Phantom) based on casual viewing. Is it a satirization of how sexually debased society has become and the devaluation of sex to the point where it's disposable? Or is it merely an excuse to masquerade soft porn as an "art film"? The film follows the exploits of Sergio, the protagonist of the film. A garbage collector in Lisbon the film follows his life, mostly his nocturnal activities, alternately working his garbage route and his sexual liaisons with both men and women. Largely devoid of dialog, O Fantasma follows Sergio's slide into sexual depravities and perversions until he is largely divorced from daytime and any semblance of what passes for normal activities and sexual appetites. Sergio's life spins out of control when he becomes obsessed with a young man who becomes the object of his obsession. Obsession turns to compulsion as Sergio begins to stalk the object of his obsession, finally climaxing in a profoundly disturbing ending.

By turns disturbed and disturbing "O Fantasma" is a profoundly unsettling movie on an order of "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover," the equally disturbing Peter Greenaway film from 1989. While it is NOT a movie I would care to watch again I am sure it does have some appeal with some cineastes.

1 out of 5 stars What happened at the last 15 mins.......2006-11-13

I agree with most of the reviews here that the movie is just so bad. The director had the wrong idea of an art film, methophors and strange incoherrent ending is not the only thing you need to make an art film. I was pretty intrigued by the lead's obssession with the Hunky Swimmer but it just did not end the movie satisfactorily ... Can anyone explain like when did he have the rubber suite, whats with the garbage dump ending, it is just too pointless !!! I felt cheated of 90 mins of my life.

2 out of 5 stars Even kink can be boring.......2005-10-01

If you crave a gay-themed film full of brooding obsession, gloomy (and very well done) night photography, the occasional graphic sex scene, and METAPHORS so obvious even a high school film class could catch them, then this just might be your cup of tea. Howewver, if you are looking for a film that sustains its running time and subject, then you are out of luck.

To be fair, Portugese director João Pedro Rodrigues has made some daring choices here. Dialogue is minimal--this might as well be a silent film with sound effects. He's working one of the great themes--the boundary between dream and reality and the dangers of ignoring that boundary. There is the further theme of sexual oppression triggering further oppressions. And yes, there is more than a little boundage mixed in. (This is no 50s MGM musical.) It looks good--night photography, lots of backlight and black surfaces, either dull or glittering. Sergio (played by Ricardo Meneses, a garbageman in Lisbon, drifts further and further into his obsession with a hunky young swimmer (and Sergio is pretty hunky himself). While not obsessing, he drifts from one random sexual encounter to another. Finally, he goes off the beam completely (I won't go into all the details in case you decide to see it).

The problem is the same that so many self-consciously arty films, from Greed to The Unbearable Lightness of Being, share--their metaphors are too obvious (here, among others, it's human and animal behavior--Sergio's best relationship is with his dog and he lapses into canine behavoir periodically) and they are just too long. O Fantasma would make a pretty good 40 minutes festival film--at 90 minutes, it just drags, particularly the ending with Sergio wandering interminably in a landfill in a rubber bondage suit. (Come to think of it, kind of
an echo of the equally tedious final sequence of Greed.) I admit it--I really haven't the patience for films that scream out how ARTFUL they are and have little or nothing except style, attitude, and angst. Style and attitude--think Fred Astaire--can be a winning combination. Unfortunately, in spite of lashings of kink and plenty of existential hysteria, this is not a winning film. Basically, it's a bore.

5 out of 5 stars powerful and uncompromising.......2005-03-07

Portuguese director Joao Pedro Rodriguez has created a film of austere beauty and sinewy power, dark and brooding like its striking protagonist. Ricardo Meneses, as the sensual, very sexual Sergio, gives a truly astonishing performance - especially considering his youth and inexperience, the nature of the material, and that this was his first and, I'm sorry to say, only film. Sergio is a lithe, muscular young garbage collector working the graveyard shift in Lisbon, but all we see of the city are its fringes. He roams forsaken moonscapes (the dumping grounds), jungle-like parks, forsaken roads. Sergio's compulsions and the force of his lust are reflected in these primitive terrains, and manifested in the increasing aberrance of his sexual behavior. The action takes place almost entirely indoors, or outside in darkness and shadow. There is, symbolically, only one moment of sunlight in the entire film when a magnificent Sergio stands, his lean body beautifully and boldly bare, on the roof of his pensione.

Ricardo Meneses, who was born to play this extraordinary part, is sensuous, narcissistic, exhibitionistic, and profoundly sexy. Mr. Rodriguez draws us into Sergio's life like voyeurs as the camera follows him, drinking in his flawless feline form as he showers, swims, admires and touches himself, prowls his habitat, has sex (with his girlfriend, his lover, his boss, a policeman, tricks), and stalks a handsome swimmer with whom he becomes obsessed. It is this last ephemeral human connection - one awkward gesture towards a world with sun - that dooms the boy. Sergio quietly asks his paramour for help and is coldly rebuffed. He becomes ever more animalistic, spiraling unremittingly downward. The tragedy which ensues is startling and seductive, like Sergio himself.

1 out of 5 stars Undeveloped, unfinished art. Don't see it........2005-01-30

With no expectations, I joined my partner in watching this movie. I was intrigued, because I share several of the main character's fetishes (including the central, dog/animalism theme). The movie reminds me of a college student's attempt-a movie based on "cool" gimmicks, poor research, underdeveloped ideas, and amateur video and audio work (technically speaking) that I could have done better on my Powerbook.

There is proof that the director filmed a bunch of disjoint scenes and pieced them together into a movie in the editing room. For those stupid enough to buy this piece of crap, simply compare the "eye candy" section of the DVD extras to the movie itself. Stuff is all jumbled out of order in the movie version.

Too bad. A potentially great film and the only thing worth seeing is the sexy star, who we may see again (as long as he doesn't need to talk much.)

5 out of 5 stars A Great Television Series Rides Again.......2007-05-22

The original series with Guy Williams as Zorro set the standard for the character and the movies that have followed. A charming man who abhored violence in public but secretly changed into the avenger and saved his people from injustice. Of course then, there was little violence as compared to television or movies of today. Disney did a great job creating this character and series for television. I enjoyed it then and thanks to Disney restoring and releasing the episodes on DVD, I can enjoy it all over again.
