Description

TARGETS is a thrilling horror film that follows the story of Byron Orlok (Karloff), an aging horror film star who is contemplating his retirement. Meanwhile, Bobby Thompson (O'Kelly) is a seemingly mild-mannered husband and son whose obsession with firearms is his way of coping with his otherwise mundane life. But, when Thompson suddenly snaps and his harmless hobby turns into a dangerous reality, Los Angeles doesn't know what hit it as Thompson unleashes undeserved fury upon innocent drivers on the L.A. freeway. And if that weren't tragedy enough, things take a bigger turn for the worse when Orlok and Thompson's paths cross as Orlok makes a special appearance at a drive-in theater where Thompson happens to be waiting with his arsenal.

Targets.......2007-06-28

Financed by Roger Corman, who lent real-life aging horror star Karloff to newcomer Bogdanovich for two days, "Targets" is a compelling thriller loosely based on Charles Whitman's 1966 murder spree at the University of Texas. Karloff, essentially playing himself, is marvelous in one of his last screen appearances, and Bogdanovich expertly juxtaposes cinematic and real-life horror, resolving the tension in an unforgettable finale that unfolds before a giant screen image. Shelved by Paramount, who felt the movie would not play well in the wake of the King and Kennedy assassinations, "Targets" was a brilliant debut for the future helmer of "The Last Picture Show."

A Low Budget Classic.......2007-05-03

Made in 1967, Targets is Peter Bogdonovich's first and best film, and one of Boris Karloff's most memorable. It concerns an ordinary, clean-cut young guy who one day decides to take his gun collection atop a tower and shoot people on the freeway-- no explanation given. The actor who plays the shooter is totally eerie because he's so normal. The film came about because Karloff owed Roger Corman a couple of days work, so Corman offered to lend him to his talented protege Bogdonovich, who wrote the script and filmed everything in a couple of weeks. The way he wove Karloff into the story is really nice. If you love Karloff, this is as significant as his performance as The Grinch Who Stole Christimas the following year. It's his last really good film.

There is a very informative interview with Bogdonovich included and the director does an interesting and funny commentary track. He is so urbane and world-weary, and it's great to compare him as he is today with who he was then (yes, he also stars with Karloff in the film, though his acting is not the best thing about it).

A Film within a Film Within a Film.......2006-09-24

I first saw this film in a theater in San Diego and, by far, it was one of the best motion pictures I have ever seen. I have been wanting to see the DVD for a long time. I would give it five stars except it seems to be lacking at least one scene that I saw in San Diego and the film was greatly diminished by its absence. When I saw it in San Diego, there was a scene where Karloff did read the script and commented how it reflected real horror rather than the theatrical variety. What was implied (and which gave the added dimension to the film) was that the script that Karloff was offered was the script of "Targets". Thus there were three films being presented. The movie horror film on the drive-in theater, the sniper film we observed, and a film about the film we were watching. It was in reality, a film within a film within a film!

The Terror isn't just on the screen.......2006-09-11

Targets is a great example of the good old days when indie films had plots instead of character studies, were aimed at mass audiences instead of the festival crowd and the awards circuit and when hungry young directors could elevate exploitation flicks into something much more challenging.

Tim Kelly, surprisingly like a more wholesome white-bread Matt Damon, is the all-American boy who one day buys a rifle and plenty of ammo, kills his family and moves on to shooting random human targets, first from a water tower and subsequently from behind the screen at a drive-in movie theatre where Boris Karloff's disillusioned horror star is due to make his last personal appearance. No explanations, no motives, just impersonal mechanical violence that's far worse than any horror film. Similarly, it could be argued that there's no real `point' to the film - just a sad observation of the way that reality can be far worse than the imagination. In many ways Peter Bogdanovich still hasn't made a better film.

Although not extras heavy, the lengthy introduction featurette with Bogdanovich and the director's audio commentary more than make up in quality what the disc lacks in quantity.

Blew me away...no Pun Intended........2006-07-28

I have been reading about this movie for thirty years and after renting it from the incomparable MOVIE MADNESS I can only say I wish I had seen it sooner. It really stands out as an exceptional example of low-budget exploitation cinema.The DVD is worth the purchase price simply to listen to the director's commentary; Peter Bogdanavich is an amusingly droll fellow and if any of his other films contain commentaries as lively and enjoyable as TARGETS then i am going to be the first in line checking out DAISY MILLER. Just kidding. But that doesn't make me any less impressed with TARGETS. This is a dandy little bare bones thriller that still has a remarkable power. This is one of the very first "modern" psycho films. Bravo to Bogdanovich and company for this one. Very well done.

No masterpiece but stylishly directed.......2006-10-22

Since Moving Targets is the third Simon Yam film I've seen with a scene in exactly the same café (PTU and Fulltime Killer being the others), I'm beginning to think he owns the place and is supplementing his salary by renting it out as a location. The film itself is a minor and disposable Hong Kong actioner about two cops (one seeking revenge on his father/superior officer) who end up on opposite sides of the law that has the benefit of being for the most part extremely well directed even if there's a lack of focus in the predictable last third that lets down the best of what has gone before.

Easy to watch and just as easy to forget, this at least marks Jing Wong out as a director whose work might be worth further investigation - though a glance at his resume on the IMDB doesn't seem very encouraging, boasting as it does titles such as Raped by an Angel 4 - The Raper's Union, My Schoolmate the Barbarian and Love is a Many Stupid Thing.

"L/R: Licensed by Royalty" is Japanese animation with a heavy anglophilic slant as it offers the animated adventures of Rowe and Jack, two young and stylish secret agents working for Cloud 7, the clandestine intelligence service of the Royal Family of Engl--oops, I mean "Ishtar," an island nation that sure looks and sounds an awful lot like England. While Volume 1 had lightweight stand-alone stories with a minimum of action, Volume 2, "Targets," gets a little grittier with the introduction of actual violence and death and a storyline that's a little stronger and more intricate. With this volume we also get a sense of Cloud 7 squaring off against the giant corporation, DTI, whose sweetheart deals with the Royal Family allow it to exploit Ivory Island, a virtual colony of Ishtar, for its rare mineral ore, Ivorystone.

Episode 5 focuses on a sniper whose assignment to do a job at a banquet is discovered by Jack and Rowe. Episode 6 deals with a series of bombings aimed at DTI and Jack's reunion with an old flame who is now a security director for DTI. Episode 7 finds Jack and Rowe on Ivory Island continuing to seek the bomber and reuniting with Noelle Ardelade, the spunky 14-year-old girl we first met in episode 3 (Volume 1) when she brought her campaign to save Ivory Island's landmark clock tower to Ishtar. Episode 7 is a continuation of Episode 6 and has a welcome surprise ending involving the search for the "15-Year Princess," which we first heard about in Episode 3. Hopefully, the series will return to this continuing storyline in future episodes rather than fall back on the one-shot mini-adventures we got in Volume 1.

The smooth production design offers a nice recreation of the buildings and streets of Lond--oops, Ishtar--and the more rural regions of Ire--I mean Ivory Island--with its rolling hills and small town pubs. As a result, "L/R" recalls other recent anime series with British settings, most notably "Master Keaton" and "Hellsing," although it has a lighter tone than those series. The English dub is quite good since it seems to be voiced largely by performers with native British accents. It all sounds just right and marks a welcome change from other shows where the dubbers are forced to adopt accents they haven't quite mastered.
