Adapted from the Dumas classic The Three Musketeers and set in 17th-century France, The Musketeer focuses on young D'Artagnan (Justin Chambers), who revives the musketeers in a campaign against Cardinal Richelieu (Stephen Rea) and his vile henchman Febre (Tim Roth), who killed D'Artagnan's parents 14 years earlier. The heroes must rescue the abducted queen (Catherine Deneuve) and her comely confidante Francesca (Mena Suvari), with the obvious highlight being D'Artagnan and Febre's inevitable showdown, which trades "All for one, and one for all" for ludicrous swordplay on teetering ladders. The film gets a trendy boost from Hong Kong action choreographer Xin Xin Xiong (Time and Tide, Double Team), but the results are decidedly mixed. While director Peter Hyams achieves convincing period atmosphere (lighting by torch and candles, etc.), he's burdened by a lifeless script and a bland leading man. The Musketeer is lightly entertaining, but another viewing of Rob Roy will provide greater satisfaction. --Jeff Shannon

The unlikeliest heroes in any queen's court would have to be janitors Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy, who dream of adventure in Disney's animated feature The Three Musketeers and get their wish under dubious circumstances. Though the trio aspires to perform brave deeds on behalf of their monarch, Minnie Mouse (who pines for a fantasy beau that looks a lot like Mickey), they are held back as servants by the head Musketeer, Pete. What they don't know is that Pete secretly schemes to get rid of the queen but has, thus far, failed in his efforts. Desperate, he appoints Mickey and his bumbling friends guardians to Minnie--on the assumption she'll be all the more vulnerable--but underestimates their determined, if slapstick, resourcefulness. Good, classic Disney comedy meets storybook romance in this short (68 minutes) animated feature, which features songs and familiar melodies by Tchaikovsky, Strauss, and Beethoven. --Tom Keogh

Description

"Classic Disney characters and a classic story unite for a colorful and witty new comic adventure" (Gerry Putzer, New York Daily News) in the musical, full-length movie based on the timeless tale "The Three Musketeers." Best buddies Mickey, Donald, and Goofy are small-time janitors with big dreams of becoming Musketeers. Their lives are turned upside down when Peg-Leg Pete, captain of the Musketeers, and his sinister lieutenant Clarabelle use them in a dastardly plot to rid the kingdom of Princess Minnie -- the only mouse standing in Pete's way of the throne. Mickey, Donald, and Goofy may not look like heroes, but they have a surprise for Pete. Powered by teamwork and friendship, they soon learn that they can accomplish anything if they work together. Packed with swashbuckling action and six rousing songs -- featuring comical spins on classical music by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and others -- this exciting musical comedy is sure to be a hit with the entire family.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Mickey Mouse Films!!!.......2007-02-23

This is a quality film, really. I am the parent of a toddler and have seen a lot of really bad films. This movie is quick, has an above-average story line, good music (lyrics set to classical music)and was a real pleasure to watch (even for the 20th time). There are a few mildly dark elements (Pete, "bad guys", swordplay, etc.)and a bit of slapstick action, but there are equally good themes of bravery, friendship and teamwork and a happy ending. I still suggest watching it with your child(ren) just to discuss it further, if needed. All in all there is nothing the average toddler can't handle. I only wish that there were more quality children's films like this...Yeah I'm talking to you, Elmo!

3 out of 5 stars A great movie for Disney's Big 3.......2006-07-26

I am really glad that Disney is starting to wheel out it's classic stars again. While I do enjoy the feature films like Lion King, Tarzan, Peter Pan, etc.. I think their is nothing more "Disney" than the original stable of characters that made the Disney company the family studio.

Disney recently has come out with the "Disney Treasures collections" and several of those are the old Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto cartoons. When I watch those with my son I always end up thinking two things.
1. I wish they would display the original shorts more
&
2. I wish they would make more shorts for the classic characters.

I'm so glad that Disney has started doing that with the Once upon a Christmas series and now with "The 3 Musketeers" And I think all of these new ventures into Mickey are worth while and done excellently.

The comedy in this movie is wonderful. There is some undertone humor only the adults will get but it's not raunchy or inappropriate, and the slapstick humor is wonderful. Disney truly made an excellent movie for the family here and I hope all the Disney lovers out there or just families looking for a good movie will pick this up.

I know this in some ways, was a dangerous undertaking for Disney because Mickey is more than a character, but he really is an icon. So if you portray him in a way that the public doesn't like you can have a severe backlash, but Disney handled Mickey's latest outing with all the class Walt Disney himself would have wanted.

Also, there are a few characters in the movie that really surprised me.
1. Pete: was great! a wonderful villain all the way back to Steamboat Willie.
2. Donald: The attitude and personality of Donald has changed drastically in this movie. He's gone from the hothead to the passive coward. I found that a little unsettling; I hope that trend does not continue.
3. Clarabelle the cow: Clara was a regular in the old (and I mean Old) Disney cartoon shorts, but has been MIA for like 60 years. So to see her again was great.
4. The turtle narrator: He was a new character and was really a great storyteller, I hope he sticks around for the next Mickey movie.

5 out of 5 stars I Couldn't Stop Watching It!.......2006-03-20

When I first saw this movie, I thought it was going to be so boring 'cause I only watched a little bit of it. Then I was soon reunited with the movie again and I watched it once more. I fell in love with it! This proves the power of teamwork and it even has romance in it. I love the fact that Donald and Goofy came back for Mickey. And I also found it adorable, when, this is going to sound stupid, when Donald and Mickey hugged and he said to him that he knew that he would come back. Anyway, another thing I like is the humor in this like when Pete was teasing Mickey with a little bit of the Mickey Mouse Club March song and also when Mickey says "We'll save the princess, even if we die trying" and Donald says "Die?" This movie is just too glorious, and one day, I shall have it and I will watch it till I turn 100.

5 out of 5 stars Best Thing Disney's Done (Without Pixar) For Quite a While!.......2005-12-16

Once upon a time, Disney was one of the best animation companies ever, putting out stuff like The Little Mermaid and The Lion King and Aladdin. Now, Disney has mainly turned to two things:

1. Sequels that aren't worth seeing
2. Original works that aren't worth seeing

Fortunately, The Three Musketeers doesn't fall into either of these categories. It's an original, funny, cute movie that doesn't run too long to hold a kid's interest. (It's barely over an hour.)

Captain Pete, leader of the musketeers, has a secret plan -- a plan to kidnap Princess Minnie with the "help" of the Beagle Boys, and become king of all France. However, Minnie soon becomes suspicious that something's going on, and demands bodyguards. Captain Pete hires Micky, Donald, and Goofy, three janitors who have long dreamed of being musketeers. He's sure that they will never be able to stop him!

Little does he know....

This movie is definitely better done than most of the stuff Disney's putting out now. Although a few parts are predictable (Mickey and Minnie will fall in love, the musketeers will win, etc.), there are several funny sight gags, plays on words, great songs, and inside jokes (At one point, Pete quotes part of the theme song to the Mickey Mouse Club - my mom had to explain that one to me) that more than make up for that.

Things I Loved:
*The message of teamwork
*The running joke about not being able to understand a thing Donald was saying
*The way Mickey and Donald were wearing their regular clothes under their musketeer suits
*Pete's helpers, the Beagle Boys. They -- especially the smallest one -- were hysterical!!

Anyway, if you want to watch a recent Disney film, this is the one to see.

1 out of 5 stars Awful. Awful. Awful........2005-08-10

I was shocked to read the many wonderful reviews here. Being a fan of most things Disney, I picked this one up locally a few months ago. Me and my preteen daughter sat down to watch it, and gave up before ever finishing viewing it. The script is dull. The songs, while based on 'classic' melodies, are amateurish. (What happened to all the wonderful songs that graced the 1990's Disney films?) Even the characters voices bear no resemblence to the ones we are familiar with. (Yes, I'm aware that the actors doing the voices during the 30's through 50's have long since died. But surely a company with the funds Disney has could find voice talent that could do at least a passable facsimile.
Disney should be ashamed of putting their name on this yawner.

Description

Singing his way into Paris, D'Artagnan (Don Ameche) joins up with three men he believes to be the King's Musketeers, but they are merely impostors who have borrowed the uniforms from their true owners. The quartet soon becomes embroiled in a political plot and D'Artagnan is sent by the Queen (Gloria Stuart) to reclaim her valuable jewel. Before completing his appointed task, he manages a swift romance with Lady Constance (Pauline Moore), some rousing musical numbers and a series of spectacular wild adventures.

5 out of 5 stars Good Story. Good Songs. Realism & Fun........2007-04-25

Realistic-adventure and slapstick-comedy normally do not mix, but here they do, because there is a good story, and the film is carefully balanced so the realism brings you right back to the story after limited comedy.

This film has a fitting hero, sword fights, a couple very good songs, a little romance, and surprisingly, some good comedy.

The Ritz brothers sometimes give that silly, cross-eyed, look, that Martin Short can do, that looks so silly, you just want to slap them for looking so silly This is a fun and lively film, yet with realism that makes you wonder, if it did not really happen that way. An excellent, charming, film.

Another great version of "The Three Musketeers" that you have never heard of is "At Sword's Point- 1952" with Alan Hale Jr., Cornell Wilde, and Maureen O'Hara.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the Cover. Realism Too........2006-08-19

The Ritz brothers are shown in Musketeer costume on the cover, but they do not play Musketeers in the film (they play assistant cooks in a tavern). Realistic-adventure and slapstick-comedy normally do not mix, but here they do, because there is a good story, and the film is carefully balanced so the realism brings you right back to the story after limited comedy.

An excellent, charming, film. They should put this on DVD, with a different cover picture, without a picture of the Ritz brothers on the cover, (though they are good in the film).

3 out of 5 stars Good Comedy.......2001-03-05

This is really a spoof of The Three Musketeers. The Ritz Brothers are not my cup of tea. This version only follows the first half of the novel. The Ritz Brothers played lackeys.Douglas Dumbrille,Russell Hicks and John King played the Athos,Porthos and Aramis.Don Ameche did a good job as D'Artagnan.Binnie Barnes,Lionel Atwill and Miles Mander excellent in their parts Milady,Rochefort and Cardinal Richelieu.Gloria Stuart,Joseph Schildkraut,Lester Matthews ,Pauline Moore,John Carradine good in their supporting roles as Queen Anne,King Louis,Constance and Naveau Bernajoux the Cardinal's spy.Is this a faithful adaptation? No,but a good one.Alot of this version was copied from the 1935 version. The D'Artagnan abduction scene an example.Note to those who love this version Miles Mander who played Cardinal Richelieu in this version played King Louis in the more serious 1935 version. The Musketeers in this version like the 1935 were getting a little long in the tooth but the performances were good.If you really enjoyed this comical take on the classic then you would probably like the Disney 1993 version (which copied from the 1935 and 1939 versions) and two Mexican versions one with Cantinflas 1942 (not dubbed in English) and Tin Tan's 1957 version which plays on the Nostalgia Channel and is dubbed in English. The funny thing about Tin Tan's version is the costumery looks just like that of the 1948 Gene Kelly version and Milady de Winter looks like a redheaded Janet Leigh. So if you like spoofs of classics you will like this.

4 out of 5 stars TRIVIA CORRECTION.......2000-01-15

Gloria Stuart, the old-lady version of Kate Winslet's character in "Titanic," plays Queen Anne in this picture. In my previous review, I had written that she plays the adorable Constance.

4 out of 5 stars Swashbuckling and Silliness.......2000-01-13

A fast-paced hoot! A better example of depression-era musicals that is surprisingly faithful to the flavor and period details of the original stories by Alexandre Dumas. The three musketeers lose a drinking contest with the cooks (the Ritz Brothers) of an inn while waiting for d'Artagnan to arrive for their first duel. The cooks take their place and the adventure begins! Beyond what has been said already, the swordplay is thrilling and well-done, Binnie Barnes is ravishing as Milady, and Gloria Stuart (yes, from "Titanic") is adorable as Constance.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2007-05-23

I will not review this based on the book, as I was never a big fan of the book anyways, but on the film itself.
Mostly, I simply found most of the characters to be bland and lifeless, with the notible exception of the villian Febre, and the plot and dialogue to be fairly weak and unexciting.
The swordfighting skills displayed in the movie were dazzling, but (as another reviewer also mentioned) considering that everyone appeared almost identicle, it was a little hard to tell at times who was fighting whom. Also, while again the fight scenes were dazzling, there was no practicle reason why some of the more over the top ones were even engaged in. I am referring mostly to the fight outside the tower on ropes (why didn't someone attempt to cut D'Artagnan's rope instead of engaging him in an ariel fencing match?) and the fight on the ladders (why would Febre give up stable ground to fight D'Artagnan on unsure footing?).

1 out of 5 stars it can't get any worse than this.......2006-05-08

it's just awful. although the movie is allegedly based on a famous novel by dumas (the three musketeers), the movie violates both the spirit and the plot of the original story. There is no Milady, D'Artagnan's young lover does not die, D'Artagnan does not go on a mission to the UK, and so forth and so on.
What makes the movie truly unwatchable is not just the fact that it has little if anything to do with Dumas's masterpiece, but is the fact that the movie is phenomenally poorly scripted and equally poorly acted.
don't waste your money buying this dvd. it's not worthy. it rarely gets any worse than this.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible movie.......2006-03-26

If there were zero stars I'd give it that. The fight scenes didn't bother me or the fact it has nothing to do with the real muskateers didn't bother me. However, it has some of the worst acting I have ever done. Basically they just read there lines. School plays have better acting. This so far is the worst movie I have every seen, and I watch a lot of movies. Whatever you do, do not see this movie

4 out of 5 stars Depends on what you want........2006-01-10

If you want Dumas's original story in cinematic form, you'll be disappointed. It's been done, and done, and done again, even by Mickey Mouse. This director has chosen not to trudge down the same old rut. Instead, he's created a story parallel to and interlaced with the classic.

As long as you can take this movie for itself, it's fair entertainment. Deneuve is a lovely as ever; her mature, regal look fits the queen's role perfectly. This is a 21st century flick, so there have to be chase scenes - even though it's horse and carriage stuff, the chase scenes are completely up to date. The adventure and intrigue carry the story along well, with a comedic edge that keeps it from turning into a grim parody.

If you want a light swashbuckler, you came to the right place. If you really wanted the classic Musketeers - well, it's been done and done again. You'll just have to keep looking.

1 out of 5 stars Why?????.......2005-10-24

Someone involved with this film should have read the book at some point. This makes either of Disney's versions valid. The best adaptation, to date, is the mid-'70's Three Musketeers/Four Musketeers directed by Richard Lester (A Hard Day's Night)and starring Michael York, Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Frank Finlay, Raquel Welch, and Charlton Heston. That version actually follows the book, for the most part, unlike this Musketeers meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon catastrophe.

4 out of 5 stars Adventure with fun.......2006-08-10

I enjoyed this movie because there was no cussing, foul language or nudity. The actors did a good job and kept me
interested in the plot until the end, even though a lady musketeer probably never existed in real life. I had previously seen this movie on TV and enjoyed it enough to buy the DVD.

1 out of 5 stars One more worthy of the junk pile.......2005-10-05

For the most part none of the musketeer movies even come close to doing justice to the original series of books by Alexandre Dumas. Which is surprising given the fabulous potential of the oiginal material. Why the material has been bastardized to fill the egos of movie stars such as Depardieu, Irons, Di Caprio and the like beats me. Or why they would chose to demean this wonderful material to stage yet another thin, vacuous, and misleadingly moralizing "politically correct" charade to stand for women's lib. It's insulting to anyone who read these books that the greedy pinheads who infect the moviemaking industry would seek to plagiarize Dumas' work simply becase his copyrights have expired. The Lester piece with Michael York, Raquel Welch and the rest is probably as good as it gets...yet it remains at heart simply a spoof of the original story. I am hoping that one day someone will come and make a decent "Three Musketeers", not to mention bring to screen the unforgetable, poignant and exciting follow-up, "Twenty Years Later" with a middle-aged and career-stuck Artagnan, a well established and wise Athos, Porthos as a widowed baronet and Aramis as a philandering priest...not to mention the amazing revenge from the past...For the time being just read the books.

3 out of 5 stars Musketeer, Next Generations: OK Adaptaion of Dumas' Classic Story.......2005-07-28

Back in 1973, Richard Lester made a film of Alexander Dumas' popular story 'The Three Musketeers,' a delightful film, with Michael York as young D'Artagnan. After 31 years, Hallmark Entertainemt took up the same material to make this TV Mini-series, again starring Michael York as "older" D'Artagnan, with Susie Amy as D'Artagnan's daughter Valentine. This time, it is Valentine who goes to Paris, encounters three musketeers, and vows 'All for one, one for all,' to protect the king from the plotting Cardinal.

[NEXT GENERATION MUSKETEERS] In short, this is the story of 'The Three Musketeers' of the next generation. If you remember the story of Dumas's book (or Charlie Sheen's filmed version if you like), put in the sons of Alamis, Atos, and Porthos in their original muskteers' place, and you know what you will see in this film. Instead of deadly femme fatale and spy MiLady, you see Lady Bolton played by Nastassja Kinski. In place of Cardinal Richelieu, you get Cardinal Mazarin played by Gérard Depardieu.

Considering the origin of the TV film, the actions are decently done (often very acrobatic for this kind of film), and the locarions are beautiful. The acting is reasonable, if not exceptional, and it is amusing to see a female muskeeter in the central role, though the unique casting could have been more effective with deeper interpretation of being a female musketeer. Anyway, Susie Amy succeeds in making the heroine a likable one, with strong will occasional humor.

The film has, however, deep flaws. One of them is, the film has too many characters. You see eight musketeers in one film -- the original four and their children. John Rhys-Davies appears as Porthos (no, not his son), but I'm afraid he is not required to do much. The direction is often slack, and though Steve Boyum (responsible for many TV films) is good at presenting actions, he needs more skills in showing dramatic scenes. That means the Cardinal should be made more charismatic, and Lady Bolton should be made more bewitching, if not sexually.

[TRIVIA] By the way, Richard Lester made 'Return of the Musketeer' starring Michael York as D'Artagnan in 1989. In this film, "Cardinal Mazarin" was played by Philippe Noiret (French actor like Depardieu).

As to the female version of musketeer, we have already seen 'La Fille de d'Artagnan' (aka 'Revenge of the Musketeers') in 1994 starring Sophie Marceau as D'Artagnan's daughter. Incidentally, D'Artagnan was then played by none other than Philippe Noiret.

5 out of 5 stars A short and sweet review.............2004-08-26

I love movies that take place in history with kings and queens and where you can tell the good from the bad because the bad guys always have this evil look about them. The feminine touch to this film is awesome. It is about time that a girl got to be a musketeer and save the damsel in distress. Not that the princess couldn't handle herself. You have to see this movie if only to say that you saw it. Don't you want to see what your missing???

5 out of 5 stars A fun addition to the Musketeer pantheon.......2004-07-19

What fun it is to see Michael York reprise his role as D?Artagnan one last time, and what perfect casting to have John Rhys-Davies play one of the other aging Musketeers.
At almost three hours this Hallmark movie must rank as one of their best productions, great dialogue, location, cast and plot the adventure ranks favorably alongside the Richard Lester favorites from the 1970s.
Truly stunning in beauty and talent the likeable Susy Amy turns in a remarkable performance as D?Artgnan?s daughter Valentine who is determined to introduce the Musketeer?s to women?s lib by following in her esteemed fathers footsteps and becoming the first female Musketeer.
However, Natassja Kinski is just as devious as her predecessor Faye Dunaway, and shows her gratitude for Valentine?s saving her life by framing her for murder of the King?s mistress several scenes later.
With a document that calls into question Louis? birthright Valentine and the sons of the other Musketeers race across France in search of the traveling beautiful Spanish princess who is on her way to Paris in secret to wed the French king in a move that it is hoped will end the war with Spain. Not to stop her, but to protect her.
The movie is so much fun I am left echoing the thoughts of the other reviewer ? I wish their was a sequel.

--Tom Keogh

Description

"Classic Disney characters and a classic story unite for a colorful and witty new comic adventure" (Gerry Putzer, New York Daily News) in the musical, full-length movie based on the timeless tale "The Three Musketeers." Mickey, Donald, and Goofy may not look like heroes, but they have a surprise for Pete.

The movie was fantastic and got here in record time. I know I can go to Amazon and get products you can't find anywhere else. Robson Green is a god.

5 out of 5 stars School of Rock with class!.......2007-04-27

It's the quintessential school of rock story, but more about the teacher and his issues than the students themselves. Plus a love story to boot. That said I don't know that I would call this a chick flick, though it does have Robson Green (yum). It's got wonderful acting, strong story plot and people that actually fence, not actors that learned for the role (or so it appears to me). Very unique story out of the UK, that I think that everyone would enjoy.

An appealing cast of film veterans makes this 1977 action-adventure version of Alexandre Dumas's The Man In the Iron Mask particularly watchable. Lloyd Bridges co-stars as swordsman Aramis, one of several Musketeer tutors of young and brave Phillippe (Beau Bridges, Lloyd's son), who doesn't know he's the identical twin brother of King Louis XIV. Captured by Louis, his features briefly disguised by an uncomfortable iron mask, Phillippe is forced to play his villainous sibling in an assassination scenario designed to fool France into believing its mad emperor is dead. Phillippe, however, turns the tables, and with the aid of Aramis, Athos (Jose Ferrer), Porthos (Alan Hale Jr.), and D'Artagnan (Cornel Wilde), makes a bold attempt to take his country's destiny in hand. Also on view are Rex Harrison, Ursula Andress, and Olivia DeHavilland; the star wattage and attractive settings compensate somewhat for director Ken Annakin's stiff and unimaginative direction. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fun movie with an amazing cast.......2004-07-23

Just look at the cast for this fun and entertaining adaptation of "The Man in the Iron Mask" story. Not only do we have Beau and Lloyd Bridges, but also Rex Harrison, Olivia De Havilland, Jose Ferrer, Cornel Wilde and Ursula Andress but there are also actors who have achieved even greater fame since this movie was released in the 1970s such as Ian McShane and Sylvia Kristal.
The Dumas story had been adapted for the screen before and since (in the weak Leonardo DiCaprio movie), but never has it been so much fun and so entertaining to watch.
The crew were obviously all having a great time making this movie and it really shows, there is humor, action and suspense right to the last moment and the DVD transfer is a good one that will not leave you dissapointed.
One reservation I do have is the lack of extra's for the price tag. We are only given a smattering of trailers for movies such as "From Here to Eternity" and "Lawrence of Arabia"...Still, this is a great movie and well worth adding to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars great cast, beautiful costumer that fizzles.......2004-07-20

This movie is loaded with stars, Ian McShane, Ursula Andress, Beau Bridges (in the duo role) and Lloyd Bridges, Alan Hale Jr., Cornel Wilde, Rex Harrison, Olivia de Havilland and Jose Ferrer. The costumes are scrumptious and the locale work all help this movie along. It?s good to see the old 50s movie stars having one last swashbuckle! Bridges is miscast and nearly sinks the movie, and the directing is stiff, but everyone does a good turn in the old Man in the Iron Mask story. McShane seems to have fun as Fourquet.

The much-filmed Dumas tale has the Philippe, twin brother of the King of France, raised and protected by the Musketeers. Fourquet, acting for the King, has the twin arrested and hidden by the iron mask. He plans to use the twin as a decoy in public, and kill him with a bomb. Then when the King surprisingly survives the attempt, it?s supposed to make everything believe he is invincible. Only the musketeer is Johnny-on-the-spot to foil the plot, save their ward and then pull the switch by stuffing Louis the King in the iron mask and place Philippe on the throne of France.

It?s a good transfer. Just a shame the younger Bridges hurt the effort in the dual role and the directing could not have been stronger.

3 out of 5 stars Why censor?.......2004-07-15

I have a copy of the full version of this movie on VHS and was looking forward to owning a copy on DVD. After receiving a copy of the DVD, I noticed the PG rating. To my dismay, I found that they had censored the 'juicy' parts of the movie. The 'juicy' parts actually portrayed the relationships between the King and his mistress and that between the future Queen and the King's twin brother. I did not find the 'juicy' parts to be offensive in any way but rather it contributed to the storyline as a whole. For censoring the movie, I give it 3 stars. However, I must commend the Studio for the quality of the transfer. The video quality is relatively good compared to the tape version but the audio quality in some parts of the DVD could be improved. I hope that the Studio will produce the full version in due course.

4 out of 5 stars Sensored version.......2002-04-30

I like the movie but not the version offered by amazon.com. I watched the unrated version in Europe and it was much nicer and made sence. Here I watch a tape and get upset how conversations are cut in the middle just because of the nudity of Silvia Kristel or Ursula Anders. For example, when Louise de La Valliere comes to join the king in bed she gets undressed while they talk. End of the conversation is cut... Believe me, uncut version is not something restricted, it is not even close to be "too bad to show", I do not understand why it is so sensored here. I wish there were an original version to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Old stars play old heroes.......2000-01-13

This is a fun little diversion for swashbuckling fans. D'Artagnan (Cornell Wilde), Aramis (Lloyd Bridges), Athos (Jose Ferrer), and Porthos (Alan Hale Jr.), prove they still have what it takes to be heroes as King Louis XIV (Beau Bridges) tries to eliminate his twin brother (Beau Bridges) and marry the infanta of Spain. The sword work is not quite as sharp as good Bob Anderson work or as excitingly realistic as William Hobbes, but there is plenty of it in a variety of creative scenarios. It is fun to watch the old actors Ferrer and Bridges work together as Hale tries to keep up and Wilde holds himself aloof. Ursula Andress adds camp appeal as the king's lover. Olivia de Havilland adds credibility in a cameo as the King's mother. There is also a good deal of political intrigue and mistaken identity to keep the story moving along.

Trivia: The role of Athos, here played by Jose Ferrer, is played in the recent "Man in the Iron Mask" by John Malkavich. There is another pair of historical sword-fighting movies set in France where these two actors play the same character. In "Joan of Arc" with Ingrid Bergman, Ferrer plays the Dauphin. The same role was played by Malkavich in "The Messenger: the story of Joan of Ark" with Milla Jovovich.
