Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Practically a nonstop brawl between pirates and anybody who gets in their path, this lighthearted, high-energy 1976 movie set in 18th century Jamaica is short on an actual story but thick with stunts and swordplay. Robert Shaw stars as the bawdy, swaggering pirate Red Nel Lynch, whose lusty crew of thieves comes to the aid of Lynch's right-hand man and close pal (James Earl Jones), then helps a beleaguered noblewoman (Genevieve Bujold) whose father and property have been seized by a local tyrant (Peter Boyle). Plot details are pretty much relegated to filling in the spaces between rollicking scenes of flying fists and gleaming blades, and a sort-of love story between Shaw and Bujold never gets the chance to go anywhere for all the orchestrated scuffling. Boyle's performance as a Basil Rathbone-style villain has got to be the least persuasive role of his career, but there are compensations, particularly Bujold's feisty turn as the heroine and a kooky scene in which Shaw and Jones amuse each other by trading dirty limericks. Directed by James Goldstone (Winning). The DVD release includes production notes, cast and filmmakers' bios, a theatrical trailer, and Web links. --Tom Keogh

This is our favorite Disney movie. We both grew up watching the Video, so it's fun to see our boys watching the DVD and hearing the fun songs again.

It came in a timely manner! I really appreciate how easy the whole transaction was!

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-04-10

I got this for my kids b/c they have not seen it. It's been in the vault for a long time so when it came out I snatched it up. Although done in the Disney style of watered down story, it's good for young kids to get an idea of good vs. evil and not be scared. It also gives them a bit of history b/c this takes place in the past.

A classic Disney movie.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Condition.......2007-03-21

The DVD came packaged as if brand new. I was expecting a little bit of rounded off corners but the movie was clear. We enjoy watching it over & over. I would definitely refer to other friends.

5 out of 5 stars I'm probably going to be incredibly biased here..........2007-03-10

When I was a kid, I had the original VHS release of Robin Hood and I must've watched dozens of times. Sure we had all the other ones but for some reason, I re-watched this movie more than any others. Watching it recently, I still find myself completely engrossed and it's probably one of the more effortlessly fun movies Disney had done. Over the years, the film's reception got mixed with people saying they preferred the staying power of Bambi and Cinderella but I find this one of my favorites movies the House has done.

Prince John took over the throne when his brother, King Richard left to fight the Crusades. Taxing everyone in the country, Robin Hood decides to step in and take his money and give it to the poor. Robin has his buddy Little John, church member Friar Tuck and the love of Maid Marian to help him while Prince John has his companion Sir Hiss and the Sheriff of Nottingham and their hopes that they will capture Robin.

One thing I found noticeable was just how great the characters were even if they got little to no development. While the main guy's of course Robin Hood, you find yourself amused by Prince John and Hiss just as much while having the strangest soft spot for characters like the church mice couple or the little rabbit kids. Some of the dialogue at times doesn't seem like traditional kids fare either and it helps make the film a bit more accessible since it's not so eye-rollingly cheesy that you wish your kids popped in a different movie. Songs, provided by Roger Miller of "King of the Road" fame does a couple of great songs including the solemn-but-not-depressing Not in Nottingham as well as provides the voice of Alan-a-Dale, the rooster who narrates even when he's in the scene.

When it comes down to Disney's DVD releases you sometimes notice a trend: the Platinum Editions, big restorations with plenty of special features to the simple Special Editions such as Pocahontas or Mulan which are pretty big as far as features but not as prestigious. Then we have stuff like this DVD. While the transfer and clean-up is pretty surprising, considering how ugly VHS was, the special features are unbelievably light. No one could've done a commentary or at least some kind of making-of? This was the first Disney film done without Walt Disney input since he passed away so we could've had someone mention that. But oh well.

This is no Snow White so don't even think it is. But instead this is probably one of the most underrated films they've done.

5 out of 5 stars a forgotten star shines again!.......2007-06-26

Although Tyrone Power is probably a forgotten star to many, this collection of some of his most exciting adventure films reminds those who remember him, or those who are at least familiar with some of his work, what star power once meant during the "Golden Age of Hollywood". Each of the films are my personal favorites, and the DVDs in the collection contain some interesting extras such as interviews with Power's surviving family members and former co-stars, as well as audio commentaries film historians, film composers, and other film professionals. Each DVD also contains separate audio track of each film's original soundtrack. The "Blood and Sand" DVD transfer uses a recently restored print that brings to life the film's original "old fashioned" bold and vivid Technicolor. All in all, this collection is definitely worth owning whether you're a fan or just interested in a star whose name rarely heard anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Tyrone Power the movie star shines here. For Tyrone Power the actor, see Nightmare Alley.......2007-06-13

Tyrone Power was too earnest and straight forward to be a great actor, but he had what it takes to be a great movie star. The earnestness of his acting made him likable, even in those rare occasions when he played a heel. He was startlingly handsome as a young man. Even as his looks matured after WWII, he maintained his status as a romantic leading man up to his death of a heart attack when he was 49. As a heel, a hero or as a period swashbuckler, Power had that undefinable quality that made people want to buy tickets to his movies. These five swashbucklers, as variable in quality and corniness as they are, give a fine picture of Tyrone Power, movie star. He had to fight to be taken seriously as an actor, so I hope everyone who buys this set will also take a look at Power in Nightmare Alley (1947). The characters he plays in this set -- Juan Gallardo, Benjamin Blake, Pedro de Vargas, Andrea Orsini, Walter of Gurnie -- you'll probably forget. You'll remember Power as Stanton Carlisle.

Blood and Sand (1941) -- Blood and Sand is not a swashbuckler, but an allegory of a man's pride, lust and ambition, played out in the bullring, about a man who is redeemed by the love of a good woman and a death ennobled by regret. In other words, the movie is a Hollywood weeper. Still, it shows what can be accomplished when professionals take hold of a teary melodrama and give it color, sleekness, sex and, at 27, an extraordinarily handsome leading man in Tyrone Power. Rita Hayworth, as the femme fatale, is almost as pretty.

Son of Fury (1942) -- If Son of Fury were the title of a paperback novel, we'd expect a bodice-ripping, heavy-breathing Regency romance. What we have is a highly professional Darryl F. Zanuck adventure of surprising innocence and charm. Everything about the movie, from the actors to the script to the cinematography, features such a high level of craftsmanship that the few corny moments pass quickly. The story, even with a stolen inheritance, a wicked uncle and a South Seas cutie, is told with such professional attention to naivety that we cheer for Ben, hiss his uncle, and even find the unlikely conclusion satisfying.

Captain from Castile (1947) - If Captain from Castile is remembered much today it probably is because of one of the most rousing marches a Hollywood composer ever wrote. The "Conquest" theme is heard only three times, and the first two are brief but effective scene setters. We have to wait until the movie is almost over and Hernan Cortez is setting out on his march to the Aztec capital of Tenochititlan for the full treatment. The music, by Alfred Newman, embraces the moment, with hundreds of soldiers, the priests, the natives, the hangers-on spreading out before us, the horizon lightening and a single volcano smoking in the distance. The theme is inspiring, martial, emotional, uplifting and memorable. It's enough to make most movie goers want to sign up and most historians queasy. After all, in less than a generation a civilization of between 2 million and 6 million people was obliterated.

Prince of Foxes (1949) -- If passionate love, convivial betrayals and loyalty one can change as quickly as one's shirt intrigues you, you'll most likely enjoy Prince of Foxes. If nothing else, you'll learn a great party trick that involves two eyeballs and two thumbs. Prince of Foxes, in my view, is one of the best of the Tyrone Power adventure films. It stands out in part because we find ourselves operating in the lusty, double-dealing world of Cesare Borgia. And while Orson Welles, who plays Borgia, can't resist slicing the ham with gusto, it must be admitted that he brings a lot of joie de vivre to villainy.

The Black Rose (1950) -- And what's a black rose? We're told it is the name given to the clove, the most precious of spices. In this case, the clove is Maryam, played by Cecile Aubry. She was a small French actress who looks no older than 14. She has a small mouth which is filled with tiny teeth and a plump tongue, and she occasionally jumps about to express enthusiasm. If Vera-Ellen and Charlie McCarthy had ever had a child, it would look a lot like Cecile Aubry. The movie, The Black Rose, is no stinker, but the one insuperable drawback is its disjointed nature. We move from Norman England 200 years after William the Conqueror, to the middle-east and then on to a Mongol army moving and battling its way toward China, then to the imperial court of China itself, and finally back to England. It seems to me to be one of Power's weakest romantic-adventure films.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Truly A Wonderful Film!! Highly Recommended........2007-06-09

If you've never read the book by Alexander Dumas, The Three Musketeers is a fabulous film that you will absolutely love. Several reviewers harp on the differences between the book and movie, but the very reason for creating a movie version is that it's SUPPOSED to be different. This one is excellently filmed, directed, and of particular note are all of the amazing actors! Personally, I've been in love with Oliver Platt, one of the most underrated actors of our time, for years, and this movie is an excellent showcase for his talents. But the star is most definately Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu, at his most evil best. I very highly recommend this movie to ALL ages, as it is appropriate to watch with your entire family.

1 out of 5 stars What WAS That?.......2007-06-08

I don't even know where to begin--the horrible acting, the terrible costuming, the obviously fake sets, the lack of continuity, or the cliched (and/or just plain stupid) lines? The "action and adventure" to which some have alluded is no more than a few people shooting each other or clashing swords while saying some really idiotic things; either that, or trying, and failing, to give the impression that they are truly courageous heroes. D'Artagnan looks and acts like a men's clothing model. The Musketeers are brainless wierdos. The king is a temper tantrum-throwing little kid. De Rochefort is obviously modifying his voice to make it more foreboding--but the fact that this is so obvious rather ruins the effect. And he looks like he should be in a gangster movie. Milady is definitely trying too hard. The red-haired doofus...I don't know where he came from. Well, that basically sums it up, folks.

4 out of 5 stars Forlicking Classic.......2007-05-15

Frolicking Classic; the classic story told in few words and comical scenes.
I love Oliver Platt who plays one of the Musketeers. All for one! and One
for all! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A classic - Musketeers at their finest.......2007-05-07

The evil Cardinal plots to murder the young King, attempts to seduce the queen in her chambers, and plots with the English. The Three Musketeers rebel and refuse to surrender and uncover the Cardinal's plans. Perfect heros, damsils in distress, "Save the King" sword play. Great movie.

Amazon.com essential video

In the capable hands of director Peter Weir, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a seafaring adventure like no other, impeccably authentic, dynamically cast, and thrilling enough to give any classic swashbuckler a run for its money. In adapting two of Patrick O'Brian's enormously popular novels about British naval hero Capt. Jack Aubrey, Weir and cowriter John Collee have changed the timeframe from the British/American war of 1812 to the British/French opposition of 1805, where the HMS Surprise, under Aubrey's confident command, is patrolling the South Atlantic in pursuit of the Acheron, a French warship with the strategic advantage of greater size, speed, and artillery. Russell Crowe is outstanding as Aubrey, firm and fiercely loyal, focused on his prey even if it means locking horns with his friend and ship's surgeon, played by Crowe's A Beautiful Mind costar Paul Bettany. Employing a seamless combination of carefully matched ocean footage, detailed models, full-scale ships, and CGI enhancements, Weir pays exacting attention to every nautical detail, while maintaining a very human story of honor, warfare, and survival under wretched conditions. Raging storms and hull-shattering battles provide pulse-pounding action, and a visit to the Galapagos Islands lends a note of otherworldly wonder, adding yet another layer of historical perspective to this splendidly epic adventure. --Jeff Shannon

Description

When a sudden attack by a French warship inflicts casualities and severe damage upon his vessel, Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey (Crowe) of the British Royal Navy is torn between duty and friendship as he embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes chase across two oceans to intercept and capture the enemy at any cost. Nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars a nice film.......2007-06-28

Peter Weir-- an admirable director-- has a nasty habit of venturing exciting ideas and making them into technically satisfying films stripped of emotional appeal. Witness 'Witness,' 'Gallipoli' and 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' (while ignoring 'The Truman Show' and 'Green Card'). All three technically superb, not a hair out of place, but where's the pathos, the passion and, well, the payoff?

There is little to dislike about 'Master and Commander.' It comes off as an engaging maritime adventure with less to do with naval warfare than with the notion of hierarchical politeness at sea. It's well-shot and nicely acted, but layered with anticlimaxes as you feel assured that, no matter what, swell 'Lucky Jack' will prevail. I could never rag on such a decent movie as this, but being a fan of 'The Caine Mutiny' and 'Damn the Defiant' (and 'Cabin Boy'), I had hoped for more.

5 out of 5 stars Superb music in a passing scene..........2007-06-19

When Bach's G Major prelude flows as the backdrop of Galapagos scene, the whole movie condensced from violent life on a battle ship down to earthly heaven on the island. Unfolding panoramic view of Galapagos island itself worth the time spent on this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Amazon reviewer.......2007-05-31

The movie Damn the Defiant! (1962) based on the novel written by Frank Tilsley is much better. It is a lot more realistic. Frank Tilsley's novel was better too. It has a lot more substance. Both movies cover similar material.

4 out of 5 stars Not Patrick O'Brien but great naval movie.......2007-05-09

Patrick O'Brien's 20 Aubrey/Maturin books are a marvellously intelligent, multi-layered, thoughtfully characterised ongoing story of life in Nelson's navy. Master and Commander is not Patrick O'Brien, Russell Crowe is not Jack Aubrey, and Paul Bettany is certainly no Stephen Maturin. Nevertheless, the film works wonderfully as a swashbuckling, authentic, engaging historical tale. The sound effects are brilliant, giving the feeling of actually being on the ship. The scenery is heaven and the story fast paced. A beaut film that I'll watch again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Lucky Jack Aubrey Comes to Life.......2007-04-29

"Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" is the magnificent movie dramatization of the characters of Patrick O'Brian's Naval novels.

Set in the Napoleonic Wars, the storyline is built around the pursuit by British Royal Navy Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey and his ship, HMS Surprise of the French warship "Acheron". The pursuit begins with an encounter in the South Atlantic in which the smaller Surprise comes off second best but survives. Aubrey decides to repair his ship at sea and pursue the Acheron around Cape Horn and into the South Pacific. The ship and crew will enjoy a brief visit to the stunning Galapagos before returning to the hunt. The climax of the movie is the second confrontation between the Surpise and the Acheron.

Russell Crowe is pitch-perfect as Jack Aubrey, firm but fair master and commander. Paul Bettany is equally perfect as the ship's doctor and the commander's best friend, who will try to mitigate the effects on the crew of Aubrey's obcessive pursuit of the Acheron halfway around the world.

The movie is rich in period detail and provides a fascinating glimpse into life aboard a British warship, crewed by tough sailors and officered by a interesting collection of sometimes desparately young officers. The sequences at sea, whether rounding the Horn in horrendous weather or boarding an enemy vessel, are thrilling and well-executed.

This movie is highly recommended as a thrilling drama and as a glimpse into the British Royal Navy at what was arguably its peak as the best navy in the world.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great film, transfer not up to other Fox classics.......2007-05-31

Irresistible hogwash from the golden days of these swashbuckler films. In many ways, more satisfying than "Pirates of the Carribean" since this film is slightly more grounded in a recognizable reality, and is therefore somehow more accessible. The Technicolor photography, which was one of the film's many asstes, receives much attention on this DVD, with Maureen O'Hara's commentary discussing the technique and the film's use of it. But the transfer here isn't up to snuff: some scenes are soft, and the color is subdued and muddy ocassionally. It's not a bad transfer, but certainly not as sharp as Fox's "Leave Her to Heaven," or "Blood and Sand". Still, for fans of Power, O'Hara, or the underrated Laird Cregar, an entertaining and physically lavish production worth more than one viewing. Old Hollywood the way it used to be, when opulent production values and sincere casts made such nonsense a real treat.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Depp...eat your heart out..........2007-05-29

Old school pirate movie...just as good as newer Pirates of the Caribbean...Tyrone Power swashbuckling his way throughout...if you like pirates and old films...this is a movie for you.

4 out of 5 stars The Black Swan.......2007-05-20

Ecxelent Adventure. Tyron Power at his best with the gratest Maureen Ohara. Full of ecxitement, great for kids.

4 out of 5 stars Maureen O'Hara and Tyrone Power - who could want more?.......2007-05-15

I mainly purchased this because Maureen O'Hara did a commentary track for this picture. Since she is a favorite of mine, I wanted to hear some of her stories and insight in working with Tyrone Power and on this particular film. I only wish that the other commenter would have had more information about the film (or 20th Century Fox) to speed up the dialog between them or to prompt Maureen O'Hara to say more than she did. As for the film, it's a classic tale of pirates and adventure. A good addition to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great adaptation of the Sabatini novel.......2007-04-14

An excellent movie. Lest we forget, it was based on the classic swashbuckler written by Rafael Sabatini.

5 out of 5 stars Cabin fever.......2007-07-03

Hilarious as a kid, and just as funny as an adult, i've loved this since the first time i saw it. Nothing beats Tim Curry as a singing pirate!

5 out of 5 stars Three cheers for muppets!.......2007-06-20

I love watching the video again and again with friends, singing along with the songs and laughing at the same jokes and gags that never get tired!

5 out of 5 stars Great family fun!.......2007-05-09

My 11 year old son and I viewed this movie together and we both loved it. I especially like family movies that are at least partially live action and not fully animated. Pirate themes are a favorite of us both. Put all that together with the anticipation of a Jim Henson creation and it's a sure winner. I couldn't have asked for a better family film that delivers a great time. We watched it a second night with Dad and he felt the same way.

4 out of 5 stars Muppet Treasure Island is a Treasure.......2007-03-10

Jim Henson's Muppet version of RLS's Treasure Island, this movie is certainly a treasure to own. The only thing the maker's neglected to do was to include the special features that came with the original produced version of this same movie. I own both but would prefer to only own one but then the original version was not in widescreen.

4 out of 5 stars Not the Best in the Muppet Oeuvre.......2007-02-24

but certainly not the worst. Very few things can top "Light the lamp, not the rat!" This film has entire scenes with rat brilliance. In fact the rats would steal the film if it weren't for Tim Curry, who, by his very exuberance, shows how much he loved this role.

Catchy songs and plenty of good jokes make this a fine family film.

Amazon.com essential video

The swashbuckler had been around long before Errol Flynn drew a cutlass, but the Tasmanian-born bit player reinvigorated the genre with his mix of dashing good looks, haughty insolence, and alluring confidence. Adapted from the novel by Rafael Sabatini (who also penned The Sea Hawk), this rousing adventure chronicles the travails of Peter Blood (Flynn), a righteous doctor unjustly sold into slavery for treating the wounds of rebels, a kind of British Dr. Mudd. Sent to a Jamaican plantation where he toils under the brutal whip of Lionel Atwill and seethes with passion for his fair niece (the astonishingly beautiful Olivia de Havilland), he escapes from bondage with his fellow prisoners and becomes the gentleman rogue pirate of the Caribbean. Director Michael Curtiz builds from one set piece to another, including a nimble beachside sword fight with pirate nemesis Basil Rathbone and climaxing with a grand sea battle that belies the film's modest budget. Flynn's bravado and charisma are apparent from his entrance, but once he leaps into action he takes command of the picture, overcoming his still-green dramatic skills with sheer personality. Captain Blood made stars of Flynn and de Havilland and catapulted Curtiz to the top ranks of Warner directors. The three reunited for some of the studio's best-loved adventures: The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and Dodge City. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect........2007-06-20

Charming, fun, romantic, perfectly-paced, thoughtful, well-written, beautifully shot, smart...I could go on forever. This movie is a masterpiece. To know that Michael Curtiz went from this to The Adventures of Robin Hood, and from that to Casablanca is no surprise. If you have even a fleeting interest in high adventure along the lines of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' or 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl', then buy this classic immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Thief & pirate, but a hero all the same.......2007-05-31

With pirates all the rage once more, what better time to return to one of the classic films of the genre -- and what a delight! Errol Flynn & Olivia de Havilland are a physically stunning couple, true stars in the making, and their genuine affection for one another shows in their scenes together. Basil Rathbone turns in a wonderfully over-the-top performance of leering, moustache-twirling villainy, while Lionel Atwill is smoothly & appropriately hateful as de Havilland's poisonous uncle.

There's a surprisingly small amount of full-scale action, as the film's true strength is in its depiction of the characters' emotions -- not that it drags by any means! But we get to see what drives Peter Blood & what sort of man he is. Just look at his reaction to Jeremy Pitt's flogging -- outrage, anger, a burning hunger for justice. That's what so many of Flynn's best films were about, and it's shown quite effectively here. If some of the dialogue & acting creaks just a bit, then that simply adds to the charm of the film. This is how they used to be made, and we wouldn't have it any other way!

Thoroughly rewatchable entertainment, most highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Swashbuckling entertainment at its finest!.......2007-05-29

Captain Blood is one of those films I always undervalue, which at least means that each time I see it I'm pleasantly surprised by how much better it is than I remembered. Despite the lack of action until the spectacular finale, it has a good plot and some great visuals, as you'd expect from Michael Curtiz, but a big part of the fun is watching Errol Flynn become a star before your eyes: it's easy to guess which scenes were shot during the first couple of weeks when he was still a little awkward, but the confidence, charm and vigour he brings to the part easily overshadows his few missteps, and he and Olivia De Havilland are one of those rare perfect onscreen couples. Basil Rathbone's Fronch axe-scent is so out-ray-juss that even he can't keep a straight face (he literally has to turn away from the camera at one point as he gets a fit of giggles). His swordfight with Flynn is the only real disappointment, a surprisingly flat number even if we didn't have Robin Hood to compare it with. Wonderfully entertaining on every level.

As well as being the uncut version of the film, Warners' DVD comes with an excellent array of extras too - a documentary on the making of the film, a 1937 radio adaptation, trailer and selected short subjects recreating the whole 1935 moviegoing experience.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Nostalgic Afternoon at the Movies!.......2007-04-22

A marvelous swash-buckler of a movie, the DVD is set up to simulate a typical afternoon at the movies, with all the proper assortment of short subjects including Coming Attractions, Newsreel, Musical interlude and Cartoon. Just like it used to be. I was too young to have seen the original on first release, but probably did see it later on. All the talk about ship models and tight budgets you can forget. The test is on the screen and it triumphantly succeeds.

4 out of 5 stars Flynn's first and best remembered swashbuckler.......2007-02-25

This was the film which launched Errol Flynn's stardom. There are many comprehensive reviews but here are a few general comments:

- Flynn was not the first choice for the role of Peter Blood and Jack Warner, head of the studio, took a major risk in handing him the role. Some of the early footage was scrapped and reshot as Flynn's confidence grew.
- The swashbuckler film had been out of favour since the silent era of Douglas Fairbanks, but the success of "Treasure Island" and "The Count of Monte Christo" in 1934 urged Warner Brothers to offer their entry into the genre.
- The DVD quality is good but not perfect. The film is grainy in spots and sometimes there is a noticeable mark on the print.
- Olivia de Havilland was only 19 at the time and she is very talented as well as exquisite looking.
- Basil Rathbone's part is very small and he must have the worst French accent on film. This was not his finest hour, in spite of the climactic sword fight. The image of him lying on the rocks as the water runs over him when he is stabbed is gruesome.
- Lionel Atwell is a superb villian. You really hiss when he is on screen. The ending of the film with his fate unknown is clever.
- The film's restricted budget is sometimes evident with obvious studio backdrops and spartan sets but the fight scenes are very well done with interpolated footage from other films. The ship models are clever and the climactic collision is riveting.

The DVD contains a good documentary about the film and the original trailer. As part of the Errol Flynn Signature Collection, the DVD is good value.

The amiable sci-fi spoof The Ice Pirates has earned a small but vocal cadre of admirers thanks to its go-for-broke gags and a healthy disrespect for outer space epics like the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises. An atypically goofy Robert Urich stars as the leader of a band of space pirates who kidnap a princess (Mary Crosby of Dallas fame), and then join her quest to find a mythical planet that can solve the universe's water shortage. A completely game (shameless?) cast (which includes Anjelica Huston in fetching leather gear, Ron Perlman, John Matuszak, and fantastic film icon John Carradine) and Stewart (The Philadelphia Experiment) and Raffill's breezy direction help sell the funniest bits (most notably, the notorious "space herpy" scene, and the frantic time-warp finale) and make the more leaden jokes palatable. --Paul Gaita

Description

Spoofy-goofy comedy, otherworldly special effects, spectacular space creatures, bedraggled 'bots, and biceps-ripplnig swashbuckling highlight this cult fave. In the future, as the galaxy's water supply starts to run out, a band of pirates searches for a new water source.

It's a silly SciFi movie which can be fun to watch about once a year or so.

5 out of 5 stars 80's ya!.......2007-06-10

I think you have to have an appreciation for slapstick and 80's movies. They wouldn't be able to make this movie today[like most 80's movies]since it's weird, irreverant and pre-steroid using Pearlman.

I laugh every goddamn time the space herpie is seen scooting around in the background.

3 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-05-15

I remember this one being so very funny back in the day when it first came out. I watched it the other day and sat there laughing at how far funny movies have come since this movie was made. While it does have its parts, I would not organize a movie night around it.

3 out of 5 stars Cheesy but entertaining.......2007-05-14

This was cheesy movie making at its finest. But it is worth watching. Some funny moments and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE ICE PIRATES.......2007-05-14

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it is sooooooooo corny, but yet so AWESOME at the same time. There are so many 80's movies that are so B rated it isn't even funny, but then again those are the ones I LOVE to watch over and over again. Everyone everywhere has an 80's movie that they love, and there is no reason to be ashamed of that. In fact I will come out and say that I actually love 'Howard the Duck'! See, I said that out loud and I am not afraid. Ice Pirates is actually not too bad to watch. It really is a lot of fun to watch and it has a great cast, too!! Well, again, I LOVE ICE PIRATES!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious Adulterated Spoof.......2007-06-05

Let me begin by warning potential viewers that this is *NOT* the popular Disney Pirates of the Carribean franchise with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, but rather an erotic spinoff whose only connection to the aforementioned film trilogy is the name of the production and the location of the sets. With that said, this film is one of the best adult films I have ever seen (I haven't seen that many, but this film "blows," what I've seen away). Aside from being a porno film (soft and hardcore versions are available), its production values are amazing. It's common knowledge that the film had a million dollar budget, so the sets and costumes are a pretty sight to see (and so is what lies beneath). The film's main draw, however, is its humor. My buddies and I gathered in our dorm room with popcorn and a surround sound system expecting really cheap dialogue (and it is cheap, by the way). We never expected to be laughing as much as we did. The lines are intentionally corny and the humor intentionally dry, so we found it very entertaining. Aside from some slow spots and trivial plot advancements, the rest of the film is good. The actual sex scenes are well done. They're...hot. I don't want to get into detail, but all of the models in the film are gorgeous, and the hardcore version of the film should satisfy most perverts (including my friends). Yay!

5 out of 5 stars I Swashed and Unbuckled.......2007-03-28

This was one of the most amazing movies i have ever seen in my entire life. The special effects are amazing as well. When i first saw the beginning of the movie, i acctually thought i was watching Pirates Of The Carribean. But oh my my i was wrong. The acting was a bit over acted and not very well. But who am i kidding. This is well.. Not a disney flick. But an adult film. Other than that look forward to the sequel coming out soon. :)

Enjoy watching the film. I know i did!!!

Among the most exciting of MGM swashbucklers, Richard Thorpe's 1952 Ivanhoe stars Robert Taylor as the medieval hero of Sir Walter Scott's novel. Returning to England from the Third Crusades, Ivanhoe is steadfast in his determination to raise the ransom for the captured King Richard (Norman Wooland), but the effort is full of peril. First is Ivanhoe's reunion with his estranged father (Finlay Currie), a Saxon who hates the Norman king and refuses to give his son the money. Then there's Ivanhoe's unpopular rescue of a wealthy Jew, Isaac (Felix Aylmer), from anti-Semites, and the subsequent decision by Isaac's beautiful daughter, Rebecca (Elizabeth Taylor), to pay Ivanhoe's entry fee in a tournament. (The strapped knight seeks the tourney's cash prize.) Wait, it gets worse: two of Ivanhoe's closest associates (played by George Sanders and Robert Douglas) collude with Richard's evil brother, Prince John (Guy Rolfe), to discredit their friend and steal away Rebecca and another woman, Rowena (Joan Fontaine)--who also fancies Ivanhoe--for themselves. Yes, the situation looks grim, but surprise appearances by a couple of legendary hero types toward the end help level the playing field. Nonstop adventure to make one swoon, Ivanhoe is a gorgeous treat and reasonably faithful to the Age of Chivalry. Things worked out so well for this film, Thorpe and Taylor got together the next year to make Knights of the Round Table. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Ivanhoe oldie but goodie.......2007-05-21

A classic film with all the bells & whistles. Considering how old this film is it still holds great character performance and directorship.

5 out of 5 stars Ivanhoe.......2007-03-22

This is a great movie that depicts honor, love and chivalry. I would recommend it to anyone. The movie is one that I am proud to own and that I will watch over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Great classic film from a great book useful in the classroom.......2007-01-23

This is a great classic film produced in the over the top old Hollywood style. Great way to introduce students to an even greater book. My students now have a visual picture of the early Middle Ages, though stylized, removed them out of their constant current culture mindset. The issue of racial prejudice prompted great in class discussion.

4 out of 5 stars A spectacular motion picture rich in action epics..........2007-01-03

This loyal colorful classic account of Sir Walter Scott about knighthood flourishing in 12th Century medieval England is filmed under the direction of Richard Thorpe...

We see lavish sets, splendid scenery, castles, halls, courts, noble knights, gorgeous maidens, sumptuous ornaments, fancy dresses, jousting fields, tournaments, elegant pavilions, brilliant tents, costumed horses, armors, swords, shields, bows and arrows...

To seek the freedom of King Richard The Lion-Hearted imprisoned by Leopold of Austria, a Saxon knight, Wilfrid of Ivanhoe (Robert Taylor), asks the help of Isaac of York (Felix Aylmer), a persecuted Jewish merchant, to raise l50,000 marks of silver... Prince John (Guy Rolfe), his treacherous brother, was conspiring with the Norman Knights to seize his throne..

The best moments of film were: When Ivanhoe, disguised as a Black Knight, enters the tournament at Ashby; the siege of Torquilstone Castle; the attack of Locksley and his bowmen; and the dramatic fight-to-the-death, with mace and ax, between Bois Guilbert and Ivanhoe...

Robert Taylor is the exact choice for a handsome, vigorous, gentile medieval hero who loves Rowena, and he is loved by Rebecca, creating a romantic triangle... Taylor plays the part with dignity, vitality and energy, rising high the age of Chivalry...

Elizabeth Taylor is sweet, sincere and beautiful... We see love through her beautiful violet eyes... Joan Fontaine, at the contrary, is far to be engaged with the part... She seems so cold and indifferent as the Saxon heiress...

George Sanders gives a splendid performance as the villainous Norman knight whose heart was stronger than his sword... He wants Rebecca at any price...

Robert Douglas plays the ambitious Sir Hugh De Bracy who had a taste for beauty and love for money... This great actor crossed swords with Errol Flynn in "Adventures of Don Juan," with Burt Lancaster in "The Flame and the Arrow," with Cornel Wilde in "At Sword's Point," and with Lawrence Harvey in King Richard and the Crusaders."

With three Academy Award Nominations for Best Picture, Best cinematography, and Best Score, "Ivanhoe" remains a spectacular motion picture rich in action epics...

4 out of 5 stars IF YOU EVER WANTED TO SEE AN EPIC FRONTAL ATTACK ON A CASTLE HERE'S THE FILM YOU WANT & MORE.......2006-11-03

AND MORE:

Besides a grand scale attack on a medieval castle by hundreds of bowmen, all in costume, there is more, much more that is grand and epically compelling about 'Ivanhoe', based on the novel written by Sir Walter Scott and Directed by Richard Thorpe.

-----> SOME HIGHLIGHTS WITHIN 'IVANHOE' - ABOUT A REBEL WITH A CAUSE - HIS KING'S REINSTATEMENT

-*- Jousting, with Ivanhoe [Robert Taylor] taking on not one, but all the Norman knights, admittedly one at a time -- of course.

-*- The royal trial of Elizabeth Taylor [Rebecca] for witchcraft. Elizabeth Taylor, here only 20 years old is stunningly beautiful -- period. Who in their right mind could accuse her of witchcraft?

-*- The final battle between Sir Brian Bois-de-Guilbert [George Sanders] and Ivanhoe [Robert Taylor], which includes horses, armor, battle axes and the venerable Mace & Chain. I must admit that I always wanted to see a battle between two knights with at least one of them using a Mace & Chain.

-*- Then there is that frontal attack on Torquilstone Castle to free Ivanhoe and his entourage. This is before CGI so these arrows are real, hundreds at a time. Naturally, nobody really dies from these arrows, but it looks really enormous in scale. Even the hollywood boulders that are showered upon Ivanhoe's men looks real though we know you can't drop barrels of 40 pound rocks on top of people heads -- presuming you may need these actors again, but it looks great.

IN A NUTSHELL:

Ivanhoe has found the missing king Richard the Lionhearted and finds him imprisoned within an Austrian castle for ransom. To raise this ransom he must overcome numerous obstacles including his own father who considers him [Ivanhoe] dead for siding with the Norman king.

The obstacles are epic as are the women in the film. Unfortunately, Robert Taylor is no Errol Flynn, a fact we are constantly reminded of when we see Ivanhoe doing the kind of things that Flynn's Robin Hood had done 15 years earlier.

Anyway, Ivanhoe is going to get the job, of restoring Richard to the crown, done no matter what it takes. He bargains with Jews, to whom he promises fair treatment in Richard's name if they aid him raising the ransom money, as if Jewish people need to pay tribute before they can expect fair treatment from the king. Ivanhoe also jousts against all the Norman knights in attendence at the royal tournament, as a sort of one man Saxon Cavalry and breaks in and out of Torquilstone Castle, and in the process finds himself the catalyst for the mother of all castle battles.

What is significant about all of this and more, is that Ivanhoe somehow maintained his chivilry throughout this spectacle and somehow won the favor and hearts of two prime maidens without violating either the trust or person of either. This is of course quite a trick, and perhaps only one that the incredible Ivanhoe is capable of.

BOTTOM LINE:

This film lacks the fluid energy and crisp script that 'Robin Hood', starring Errol Flynn boasted some 15 years earlier. Nevertheless, it is a very real piece of English folklore that plays on the screen exactly the way a good fairy tale should. There are good kings and bad kings and good knights and bad knights. There are 2, yes, 2 damsels in distress and they are rather attractive as damsels go in beauty and character as well. However, there is something missing and something wooden about the acting, particularly by Robert Taylor in the lead as Ivanhoe. Somehow I was left thinking about what a terrrific film Robin Hood with Errol Flynn was after I saw this film.
