James Caan and Robert Duvall star as a pair of CIA operatives in the Bay Area; when Duvall sells out Caan, he cripples him instead of killing him. But Caan fights back, working himself back into shape and back into service to protect a visiting dignitary who is targeted for assassination. It all leads to a solid shootout and martial-arts battle aboard the mothballed fleet in the North Bay. Economic and spare, this is one of director Sam Peckinpah's lesser efforts, but still features his skillful direction of action scenes. An intriguing cast includes Arthur Hill, Mako, and Bo Hopkins; this may be the only film that features both Burt Young and Gig Young. --Marshall Fine

3 out of 5 stars Caan and Duval, Uzi's and Ninja's!.......2006-12-25

I watched this movie a long time ago when I was much younger and it immediately became one of my favorites. First the movie was directed by Sam Peckinpah who's style I always liked. Second it stared two really powerful actors of the time in James Caan and Robert Duval. And lastly it had a LOT of action. It is a highly intelligent movie and several steps up from anytthing that you will ever see that has Ninja's in it. The movie revolves around a company of mercenaries that are hired by corporate interest or the government to do certain jobs. The movie story really takes off when two friends are torn apart by betrayal and then the movie becomes a story of revenge and obsession.

I have heard several people review this movie in a bad light when it first came out. But I must say that I enjoyed it back in the early 80's when I first saw it and I have watched it several times over and over since. Each time I still find the movie to be fun and interesting and the acting to be top notch.

3 out of 5 stars Not a complete waste of time , but do not expect too much .......2005-11-03

It is always sad when , for whatever reason , someone who has a strong reputation releases material with their name still attached , but without the former quality .

That is the best description of this movie . It feels like scenes are missing .

I encourage you to seek out and watch Sam Peckinpah's earlier , better films . The two lead actors are not shown to best advantage - I am a James Caan fan , but didn't feel much was asked of him in the film .

Rent it if you want to see all of Sam's films .
I have traded my copy . I won't miss it .

2 out of 5 stars Boom then Bust.......2005-03-09

It was almost unfathomable to me that this film would be a bust but I was indeed disappointed. Having been a connoisseur of Pekinpah cinema for years, I found this DVD, drastically reduced, for sale and thought it was worth a shot. The opening few credits, iconic to Pekinpah fans, has the inter-cutting between man and animal, but here we have non-diegetic ambient noise of children playing in a schoolyard while a bomb is being planted. Fantastic suspense. Then, when the perps, Caan and Duval, travel to their next mission, Duval drops the bomb on Cann that his date last night had an STD, found only by snooping through her purse while Cann was being intimate with her. The ensuing laughter is fantastic, and is clearly paid homage to in Brian Depalma's Dressed to Kill, at the short-lived expense of Angle Dickenson. The problem with The Killer Elite is that after the opening credits, the film falls flat. Even Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia has stronger production value, a bold call for anyone who knows what I'm talking about. I use Pekinpah's credits as supplementary lecture material, but once they are finished, turn The Killer Elite off.

3 out of 5 stars THE KILLER ELITE.......2004-02-26

A warped genius of a director sleepwalks this half decent action thriller. You can tell Peckinpah had no enthusiasm making this film, it still boasts some good cheographed action scenes.
For example a great sequence of a botched assaination attempt, mixed with some slow motion martial arts. James Caan and Robert Duval are playing there roles purely for laughs. Watchable but no Straw Dogs.

1 out of 5 stars Easily one of the worst movies ever.......2004-01-29

If you ever wonder why James Caan, despite being an amazing actor, hasn't had that great a career, this meltdown is a great place to start. Keeping with that theme, Robert Duvall's seems to have survived because he's only actually in about four scenes in the entire movie. I have to hand it to whoever wrote the great blurb on the back of the DVD, because the dubious title alone makes it easy to take a pass on it.

Pass I should have done. Really, the whole idea of this was bad to begin with. The opening credits encompass the guys placing a bomb with children playing in the background, and yet when the thing goes off, the building is actually in a light industrial area with no children around to speak of. Very weird. The purpose of blowing the place seems to be to spirit away some defector with a bad accent, which doesn't make any sense either. The first ten minutes the sound was really badly mixed, so it was hard to tell what they were saying . . . and it got worse from there. Caan gets shot up, then obligatory "invalid recovery" sequence begins, through which I fast-forwarded zestfully. And then I gave up for a couple of days, never intending to finish it, but one gets bored.

Protecting some generically Asian guy was the focus of the rest of the plot, which allowed for some generic ninjas to be introduced into the mix. The ludicrous scenes of ninjas stupidly charging into Uzi fire ensues after a lot of FAST-PACED, BREAK-NECK (yeah right) car chasing and lots of conversation. The heroes even start laughing at the stupidity it at one part, along with the audience.

Bad editing, direction, script, acting, concept, music, etc. Many reasons why nobody's ever hear of it. I wish my local video store would be more discriminating in their selection. This is easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Avoid.

5 out of 5 stars my #1 movie.......2006-04-08

this movie has it all, i laughed so hard, i thought i was going to break a rib! this movie is very immature in a good way. please check this one out if u have a good sense of humor.

3 out of 5 stars certainly interesting.......2006-02-06

Movie certainly has plenty of gore. The nudity is not very sexy, but the overall concept is very good. Worthy of watching, but not high-tech effects.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD FLICK!!!.......2006-01-02

This is a wonderful film for it's budget. it has a lot of work put into it. I loved it. It's hilarious, gory, acting is good most of the time, and all time just sick! this movie is definatly worth buying for the cheap price it is at, and all the things included on the dvd. It's basically a comedy horror that shows how janitors or CUSTODIANS are treated like crap, and they want revenge, the main janitor kills so many people, it is soooo funny. definatly buy this, or at least watch it somehow, i loved it. it's the type of movie that i could watch over and over and still laugh and love.

5 out of 5 stars The One You've Been Waiting For.......2005-12-24

Once in a great while you discover a movie that totally redeems your faith in independent low budget horror movies. Some examples from my personal past are the original TROMA classic The Toxic Avenger, Peter Jackson's Bad Taste, Trey Parker's Cannibal The Musical, and (a lesser known, underappreciated, but equally as entertaining) Gorman Bechard's Psychos in Love. I can remember the first time I saw each of them. All original ideas with real passion behind them, you could tell that every cent of the budget was right up there on the screen. You really knew you were seeing something special and you couldn't wait to have the one friend of yours who could REALLY appreciate your particular taste in movies over to show off your new discovery, then quoting the dialogue at inappropriate times for weeks, even months later. How about a pretzel? "Mmm...salty!"

You blind buy a movie cause the box looks cool, or has a catchy title, or the plot synopsis on the back makes it sound like no self-respecting horror fan would be caught dead without this movie in their collection, only to put it up on amazon a day later in hopes of getting a fraction of what you paid for it back. I'd say a good 99 times out of 100 that's the case. There's a lot of garbage out there in the horror DVD market, it only makes sense that a film called The Janitor would rise above it.

All the usual marketing bait is there. The box cover sucks you right in, bloody red lettering, a maniacal Lionel (the title character) waving a torn off arm above his head, and scantily clad women aplenty. Janitors are typically creepy fellows who all look capable of mass homicide (show me one who isn't, I'll show you ten who are...hey, prove me wrong!). The story summary on the back satisfies, actually exceeds, every element of what makes for a great B movie. "...brutally murder everyone in his path..." "...naked college women..." "...a bloodbath at the sorority house..." Believe the hype!

The movie has the look and feel of a TROMA film (even TROMA founder and creator of the Toxic Avenger Lloyd Kaufman makes an appearance) (and when I say "the look and feel of a TROMA film" I mean the ones they actually MAKE, not some of the schlock that they pick up for distribution). The gore starts fast and continues throughout, the dialogue is hilarious, there's always something happening. Some scenes actually defy description (there's a gratuitous love scene at the sorority house that comes to mind that'll have you asking "how is THAT even possible!?!"). And it's one of those Spinal Tap kinda movies that gets better with repeated viewings, you pick up things you missed the first time through. So what makes it so special? It just has "it". The quirky charm. A rare film that delivers the promised goods. Memorable characters in unforgetable situations. It's hard to describe what "it" is, but you know "it" when you see "it".

Bonus materials are plentiful and (amazingly) actually entertaining. I can't tell you how many deluxe edition DVDs I bought for the special features only to find that they weren't all that special. There's a thorough making of feature that covers the early casting calls (tackling the important issues like actress willingness to do nudity) straight through to the production. And as you're watching it you're thinking these guys making it are just average guys like me...only a lot better looking. So if you're an aspiring filmmaker, you can see that it CAN be done, it IS possible to make your own movie. An entertaining commentary track is included made even moreso with the addition of alcohol. The original short film is supposedly in there too and for the life of me, I don't know why I haven't watched that yet. I'm gonna do that right now.

Get this movie! Watch it often! Then when Andy Signore and TJ Nordaker hit it big, you can sit back and be all like "Yeah, I knew about them a few years back, did you ever see The Janitor?" Girls will think you're so hip and want to date you.

5 out of 5 stars As Low Budget Features Go, This One is Epic!.......2005-12-20

THE JANITOR is what it is - a low budget Troma style Blood, Gore and Boobies Romp - that being said - it's a great one!

The characters are memorable, the gags are totally over the top, the laughs are all over the place, and the body-count is enormous!

It's obvious watching the extras (which ELITE did a fantastic job with), that these guys didn't have much money at all, yet went out and gave it their blood, sweat and tears... their excitement for the material shines brightly, and as long as you go in expecting what it is - a gory, goofy, independent midnight movie - you should have a blast...

I have a new found respect for Custodians and I can't want to see what these guys do next!

It's trouble in space, as a crew of astronauts brings a little something extra back on their bargain spaceship. One explorer goes mental and hijacks the tram inside a space mining facility, then another gets her foot caught and amputates it with a hedge trimmer. A third (Judy Geeson, looking like a poor man's Angie Dickinson) is impregnated by a big slimy-looking alien, and then the trouble really starts. She has the rest of her crewmates on the run as the gestating little monsters inside her command her to KILL KILL KILL, eventually smashing up the cheapo control room aboard the ship and generally causing trouble. The plot elements will ring familiar bells for sci-fi fans, dating back to Alien and even the moldy Fifties classic It! The Creature from Beyond Space, with an alien stowaway and paranoid, suspicious crew members aboard a claustrophobic spacecraft. The movie's cheesy look is unavoidable throughout, with sets about on a par with an episode of the original Star Trek. However, there's a rather high gore quotient, wonderfully hambone performances (Geeson has a shriek that rivals any '50s scream queen), and a fairly repulsive (and inexpensive) alien. Fans of B movie sci-fi should find that Inseminoid will deliver some fairly familiar goods in a pleasingly trashy package. --Jerry Renshaw

4 out of 5 stars Liquid Who Alien Hammer 1999.......2005-11-13

I've actually read that this film was being made simultaneously with alien and was released a few weeks later, so who's the rip-off? More like a mash of Doctor Who, Space 1999, Liquid Sky and some Hammer mishap. Gory brit space opera filmed in a cave with some sexy breastage and horny alien impregnations. A whole lotta gel filter lighting and silver myler spandex were used in the making of this film. People who grew up on 80s late night cable will cleave this lovingly to their breast, all others will probably see it for the space-rape hokum it really is. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Nice British Sci-Fi Horror.......2005-10-23

Let me start by dispelling the myth that this is an attempted Alien rip-off. This movie was in production before anyone involved in it had seen the Alien movie and it was released in 1980. Both movies do draw upon earlier works such as Bava's Planet of the vampires. Any comparison between the two is also somewhat needless given the status of Alien as an all time classic and Inseminoid as a competent and entertaining B-movie.

Inseminoid could be described as exploitation meets a Blakes's 7 episode. The British seem to have been masters of combining very professional small-name actors with low budgets to produce material that hits above its weight, and I think this is a good example. Where the movie falls down a bit in my mind is that suspense in not maintained. None of the characters are developed to the point that we have much pity for them as they meet their deaths, and hence the movie does fall back on its credentials as an exploitation flick to provide entertainment. The quality of the DVD transfer copy I've seen is very nice with no obvious sign of age or wear. I'd only recommend buying this one to collectors of this genre. Having said this, I think the movie is much better than many similar low-budget B-movies.

4 out of 5 stars Cheese city here, folks.......2004-02-21

I had to chuckle to myself when I noticed I am following up a review for a movie called "Killer Condom" with one for a film called "Inseminoid." It is completely unintentional, I assure you. Still, it is funny in a dark, demented sort of way. As for these two films, the styles are quite different. "Killer Condom" is a warped spoof of American detective films while "Inseminoid" falls into the category of straightforward science fiction. Also known as "Horror Planet," "Inseminoid" is one of those hypercheesy rip-offs of "Alien," except on this outing it is Brits instead of Americans working on both ends of the cameras. The movie is a very low budget effort, hardly worth mentioning let alone watching unless you always enjoy viewing low budget British "Alien" rip-offs. Once again, I found myself wondering how a movie like this could get a DVD release while worthier projects fester on the back shelves of video stores in VHS formats. I am not saying "Inseminoid" is bad; it is actually a quite enjoyable romp through the world of schlock cinema, but even I must admit this movie should stand at the back of the line when it comes to receiving a DVD treatment.

On some distant planet in the distant future, an archeological expedition made up of males and females digs up a world of hurt in a series of tunnels near their recently inhabited base. One of the guys nosing around in a tunnel unearths some weird looking crystals, and goes completely bonkers after touching them. The other members of the expedition express the requisite amount of concern for their mentally damaged and recently deceased co-worker, but that doesn't stop them from continuing to muck around in a situation of increasing danger. Instead of hiding away in the research facility to await the arrival of a rescue ship, the crew decides to find out exactly what is going on. Too bad for them. It turns out that some mushroom shaped alien life form (see the cover of the DVD) has decided to emerge from its hibernation, hiding place, or wherever it has been in order to wreak havoc on the gullible humans. The hideous being hurts a few people before casting its lascivious eye on Sandy (Judy Geeson), deciding to "inseminate" her (chuckle) so he can have a few children. Before you groan with derision, and you will groan often while watching the film, it is after this incident that "Inseminoid" gears up to a snail's pace.

Sandy flips her lid after her experience with the creature. "Hey, so would I if I just had a sexual experience with an alien" you might say, and you would be right in part until you discover what Sandy gets up to. She starts roaming around the byzantine tunnels of the research facility in search of her fellow crewmembers because the growing embryos inside clamor for the nurturing taste of human blood. Bodies fall spouting blood and guts as Sandy insidiously tracks down her prey. The lady uses explosives to blast through metal doors, lays in ambush, acts as though she is in peril in order to lure unknowing humans to her, and generally makes a huge nuisance of herself. A diminishing group of survivors frantically monitors the deteriorating conditions in the corridors of the base from a sealed off control chamber while desperately hoping help arrives in time. Predictably, Sandy gives birth to her alien offspring--twins, by the way--before finally succumbing to one of her comrades. The "twist" ending not only fails to surprise, it fails in an excruciatingly banal way. Anyone who claims "Inseminoid" doesn't rip-off "Alien" should have their head examined.

"Inseminoid" boasts several memorable elements worth noting here. One concerns the presence of actress Victoria Tennant among the cast. She only shows up briefly--just long enough to pick up her paycheck, one supposes--so you have to keep your eyes open. The idea that this actress could go from a cheesefest like "Inseminoid" to movies like "All of Me" in the space of three years simply boggles the mind. Only Kim Cattrall could boast of a similar seismic shift in cinematic priorities with her trek from "Porky's" to "Sex in the City," and that took nearly twenty years. If you tire of looking for Tennant, tide yourself over with the hysterical overacting from Judy Geeson's character. Bette Davis near the end of her career couldn't beat this energetic actress's hammy performance as the doomed Sandy. She shrieks, she cries, she bellows, she cackles, she plots--what a thespian! I alternated from saying things like "Oh, knock it off!" to general laughter as I watched Geeson emote herself into a tizzy. Yep, these two elements, combined with set pieces that looked like they were taken from a roller rink circa 1975 and the cheesy special effects make "Inseminoid" a worthwhile project for the dedicated film fan.

The DVD edition doesn't offer much in the way of extras. There's a grainy, unrestored trailer and that's about it. At least they offered us a widescreen picture transfer (why, I have no idea), which does look very nice. The audio sounds better than it should. "Inseminoid" is rumored to cause watering eyes, chronic fatigue syndrome, shingles, projectile nasal congestion, headaches, and a host of other annoying ailments to those who watch it more than once. So take my advice: rent the film, watch it once very quickly, and return it with all due haste to the video store. There's no sense causing yourself lingering harm by repeating the experience.

2 out of 5 stars The Alien Who Loved Me.......2004-02-19

In 1979, director Ridley Scott unleashed the film Alien on an unsuspecting viewing public, pretty much making his career as a director. Of all the great things to come from that frightening, entertaining and highly successful movie, sequels, comic books, novels, toys, etc., the one thing he probably didn't foresee was the slew of really poor imitations that were to follow, including, but certainly not limited to, Inseminoid, AKA Horror Planet (1981). Written by Nick and Gloria Maley, Nick being most notable for make up and special effects on such movies as Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, and Gloria's claim to fame being a nominal actress in movies like And Now the Screaming Starts! (1973) and Satan's Slave (1976), Inseminoid doesn't look promising. And it isn't. Okay, so who's directing? Norman J. Warren? The same Norman J. Warren who directed Satan's Slave, Alien Prey (1978) and Spaced Out (1979)? Oh man, we're in trouble...

This English production starts out with a view of some planet and voice over talking about various failed expeditions to said planet. There is currently a third one in progress, and we soon get to seen some people in space suits walking around caves. One of the explorers finds a strange looking pod, and it starts to glow, and then explodes. Whoops...some other stuff happens, and the gist of the thing is one of the female crew members gets impregnated (ick) by an alien who we see for like two minutes and then never see again. I know what you're thinking, "Did the alien copulate with the woman?" From the trailer you'd think so, but that wasn't the case. The alien actually sedated the woman and inserted a long, clear, plastic tube between her legs and some gooey, green, lumpy fluid flowed through (double ick). So anyway, the woman is now knocked up, and it turns out the fetus starts messing with her mind. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The actress, Judy Geeson, playing the character that gets the space bun in the oven seemed so familiar to me, but I could not place her. Turns out she was in the much better film To Sir, With Love (1967). Poor Judy...oh well...as I was saying, the woman laden with alien spore starts tearing up the rest of the crew, and her gestation period develops rather quickly as in subsequent scenes, her belly gets bigger and bigger. There was a rather revolting scene where two crewmembers get into a fight with the pregnant woman, where the male crewmember basically stomps on the engorged belly of the expectant mother to be while she was laying on the ground. I know she has an evil space baby inside her, but still, the visual was disturbing and, in my opinion, unnecessary.

Things I liked about the movie...the production values where surprisingly decent, especially for a movie like this. The sets were fairly expansive and almost realistic. I guess when you have really low expectations, it's easy to please. Also, Judy Geeson does appear nekkid, during the insemination scene, and a couple of other female cast members are see in skimpy outfits that clearly mimic Ripley's outfit near the end of Alien. Both of the actresses who appear this way may be easily recognized as one was Stephanie Beacham, who was on TV's Dallas, and the other being Victoria Tennant, from the Steve Martin movies All of Me (1984) and L.A. Story (1991). Things I didn't like about the movie...well, the actors kept stepping on each other's lines. I understand film is expensive and shooting schedules are tight, more so in these types of movies, so there may not have been an opportunity to correct these things. It happens pretty often in this movie, and it's quite funny. Also, the music...arrrgh...couldn't they afford someone whose main instrument wasn't a Casio keyboard? Another thing, there were too many characters, and it soon became apparent the only reason for this was fodder for various kill scenes. One last main point was of a tactical nature. These noodle heads had absolutely no concept of even the most basic, common sense tactical abilities when dealing with the murderous mother. They outnumbered her and had various weapons available at their disposal, but their course of action always involved running away, even when they have the advantage. Really, the characters that met with grisly ends deserved to die, as they were so utterly incompetent and stupid.

I give credit to Elite Entertainment for an exceptional print of the film. It was clear and without visual flaws. Same thing couldn't be said of the script. The audio was also excellent, providing crispness that allowed us to hear every bit of inane dialog, cheesy electronic musical note, and odd, sometimes-inappropriate sound effect. My overall view of the film? Good for a few cheap thrills and unintentional laughs, but not much else.

1 out of 5 stars Aliens with a big sharp toothed ..........2002-09-26

Pretty bad, but it moves along well enough that it works for a Bad Movie Night. If you like to sit around with friends and laugh at how bad a movie can be then this is a good contender. My favorite part is that the captain is a perfectly ineffectual middle manager. He sits in his "office" and sends one person after another to go investigate and then broadcasts [weak] suggestions to them as they walk to their deaths.

2 out of 5 stars Everyone Poops--"Monsturd" is a Bowel-Churning, Stinky Lark.......2006-12-04

Let's face it--if you've plopped "Monsturd" into your DVD player, you can't be expecting "Lawrence of Arabia." What you've got here is a low-budget endeavor with a clever premise and a catchy title. Anyone not intrigued by a film entitled "Monsturd" undoubtedly has no business watching this--and I'm sure they'll be grateful for that. For the rest of you sickos, the title is the most clever thing about this movie.

The plot, as if it matters, concerns an escaped killer who is gunned down in the sewer after a chemical spill has contaminated the drainage system. Covered in waste, he soon develops into a monster of excremental proportions. Intent on continuing his murderous ways, this walking pile of waste is as merciless as it is odious.

As you might expect from a zero budget film, "Monsturd" has terrible acting and cheesy effects. Ultimately, I wanted to root for this little film--but the writing just isn't as funny as you might hope. After viewing this cinematic treat, one of my friends turned to me and said "you should write a film." I don't know if he was implying that I would also produce a pile of dung--or if he thought I could easily pen something more humorous. For it would have been easy to make this a terrific B-movie--but "Monsturd" relies too heavily on its premise and not enough on pithy dialogue.

Lacking the sophistication and wit of a high-concept B-movie epic like "Killer Condom," I should probably rate this film at 1 star. But, you know what, it's walking poo! That has to be good for another star, doesn't it? If this film sounds like your ideal date movie, by all means, check it out. But be forewarned, "Monsturd" is an acquired taste--or is it a smell? KGHarris, 12/06.

3 out of 5 stars A.....crappy movie?.......2006-06-02

With so many silly ideas floating around in direct to video horror films anymore, I guess we all knew in the back of our minds that it would only be a matter of time before they got around to this concept. The idea of a poopman might not be 100% original(after all Kevin Smith had his poop demon in Dogma, and Green Jelly had their poopman superhero on their Cereal Killer album. I remember they even sold toy figures of those!), this would definitely be the first full length feature about a killer turd man. The idea is priceless and had huge comic potential, but it just comes up very short. The film is shot with a digital camera, so while it may be crystal clear picture, it just doesn't look like a movie in the traditional sense. It has a home movie/public access look about it, and I just can never get by that. Film is film and it will always be what movies are shot with if you ask me. Each and every toilet/poop pun is used, no matter how good or awful. They even manage to make up a bunch of new ones. The film certainly has it's funny moments, but they are few and far between, and considering the potential for laughs, that's a disappointment. Monsturd is obviously only gonna appeal to a certain group of movie fans. The average person will see this on the video store shelf, shake their head, maybe point it out to their buddy, and then move down to grab a copy of Monster In Law. It is difficult to recommend this one even to a Troma or Full Moon fan(well, maybe Full Moon, that stuff is rather putrid). There are definitely worse things out there of course(when watching a bad film you can always comfort yourself that at least you're not watching Napoleon Dynamite), and like I mentioned before there are a few genuine laughs, so not all is lost on Monsturd. I just wish this concept would have been brought to the screen by someone different.

3 out of 5 stars Watching Monsturd is like watching a really bad wreck.......2006-05-08

With a name like Monsturd, it's gotta be bad. And it is.

But it's not bad in a Gigli way-- here... lemme give you an example: Watching Monsturd is like watching a really bad wreck; you are disturbed to no end, yet it's hard to look away. Watching Gigli is like being in a wreck. Any questions?

No, Monsturd is at least enjoyable. It's downright silly, but still pretty funny. It had a lot of potential to be TOTALLY tasteless, but they really fumbled the ball on this one. If some college or high school kids had made a movie about a poop monster you can be darn sure it'd make even the dead laugh. I really wish that this had been a Troma film, because even Troma films have a better budget than this one did... It was all filmed on digital film, and I don't think they knew how to use any filters to improve the quality. I know, I know... a movie about giant, walking, homocidal turd doesn't exactly demand the high quality treatment... but every little bit counts.

There were some golden nuggets in this mountain of poo, however. I think as the actors were encouraged to ad lib more and more, the lines became steadily more funny. The speech that the cop gives on the bullhorn made me laugh so hard I was hurting. The scene with the two cops vomiting after finding the first victim was priceless... nothing is as funny as people puking. Nothing. I really like the taunts that the Poopman leaves on the bathroom walls too. "Don't get caught with your pants down!" amongst others. The acting was just... HORRIBLE. In a movie like this it's actually a high point of the experience. It's obvious this was the first movie these guys ever made... and it's evident from many angles.

I'd have to say that the best feature of the whole thing is outtakes reel, that is more like a documentary about the making of the movie. It shows how much these guys didn't know about movie making, how they were really wussies (there's a scene where the guy in the Monsturd costume is practically crying and whining to be let out of the suit), and how immature they were (two of the guys get really hacked off with each other during the shooting of one scene). Fun stuff! And it even gave me an idea for something I want to make now.

So go in knowing full-well you are watching a movie about an 8-foot-tall poop monster and don't expect a masterpiece. Just think like a rude kid and have fun!

2 out of 5 stars "Let's get that piece of s##t.".......2005-09-21

MONSTURD reminded me a lot of the killer snow man flick JACK FROST. In fact, it was pretty much the same story: just replace the snow man with the turd man, the Christmas humor with turd humor and minus Shannon Elizabeth.

If the idea of a victim being attacked by a eight foot tall turd monster that's constantly spewing turd juice all over the joint funny then you'll think this movie is the [...]. I laughed a few times but there was just a little bit too much talking going on. Trim off 10 minutes of filler and it would have been much better. With a bigger bowel movement, I mean budget I'd watch a number 2 if they made it.

My favorite part besides the s - word being used about 200 times was when the two cops found the turd man victim in the sewer and kept puking over and over and over. Classic.

1 out of 5 stars This sucks. It's not even funny........2005-08-07

I was expecting stupid fun but all I got was stupid. There isn't anything funny at all. It was so bad it simply sucked. You'd think with a name like "Monsturd" there'd be some hilarious disgusting scenes, like the vomit scene in Bad Taste. All the poo jokes were so obvious though. Any idiot could come up with this bland ultra-tame/G-rated dialogue. They also have awful film music being abused in every scene. Give it a rest, geesh. There aren't any violent/gore parts either. When the lame monster attacks, they just show people screaming and water splashing with some tootsie roll stains apparently. The monster only gets shown a couple times too.

The worst part of the movie is that it takes elements of the thriller genre (which it tries to spoof as well as horror) too seriously. There were details they just spent too much time on explaining. I wanted to watch a movie, not follow something pointless. I can't believe I sat through this mess. The ending felt like they just ran out of ideas so they just ended everything in a snap. What a crappy movie. The only redeeming quality about this movie is I'll have something to throw at people in case everything else I own dissapears and I have the need for a projectile.

4 out of 5 stars "Perhaps the good sergeant died of a guilty conscience.".......2005-10-27

I think most anyone who's seen Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), when asked the most memorable scene, would probably reply the swimming sequence featuring Julie Adams and the creature...it had a sort of sensual, romantic poetry to it, along with featuring Ms. Adams in a bathing suit. And I'll tell you what, seeing her some twenty years later in this film, Psychic Killer (1975), she's aged incredibly well, looking about as beautiful as she did back then...older, yes, but no less attractive, in my opinion. Co-written by Mikel Angel (The Love Butcher), Greydon Clark (Satan's Cheerleaders), and Ray Danton (The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond), who also directed here, the film stars Jim Hutton (Where the Boys Are, Major Dundee, The Green Berets), Paul Burke (Valley of the Dolls, The Thomas Crown Affair), and Julie Adams (Creature from the Black Lagoon, "General Hospital", McQ), who was also married to writer/director Danton at the time. Also appearing is Neville Brand (Stalag 17, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn), Nehemiah Persoff (Voyage of the Damned, Twins), Whit Bissell (Soylent Green), Mary Charlotte Wilcox (The Big Bus), Stack Pierce (Cool Breeze, Trader Horn), and Della Reese (Harlem Nights, "Touched by an Angel") in a minor, yet highly memorable role.

The film begins in a state run mental ward, as we see a man awakened in a panic, and run screaming through the facility until finally subdued. His name is Arnold Masters (Hutton), and he's plagued with nightmares about his deceased mother. The back story is his mother was really sick and needed an operation, one which he couldn't afford...no cash, no slash, that's our policy...anyway, the doctor who would have performed the operation wound up murdered, and Arnold, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, was accused, charged, and eventually convicted, all the while maintaining his innocence. Anyway, after his recent raving fit, Arnold is placing in the high security loony ward where he becomes friends with Emilio (Pierce), a voodoo guru of sorts. Emilo ends up taking his own life, but not before leaving Arnold some tools of the trade. Arnold's released (turns out the real murderer confessed) with a hearty slap on the back and a `no hard feelings' attitude from the hospital, and returns to the old homestead, with thoughts of revenge on the brain. You see, while Arnold was away, his mother passed on, and those he sees as responsible must be made to pay. There's the court appointed psychiatrist who testified against him, the negligent nurse (Wilcox) who was supposed to care for his sickly mother, the policeman who actually arrested him, Arnold's attorney who basically sold him out, and so on...and thus Arnold begins using his new powers to have out of body experiences to cause a series of bizarre and unexplained deaths, which baffle the police, including Lieutenant Morgan (Burke). Eventually Morgan does make a connection of sorts between the victims and Arnold, seeks the help of Arnold's doctor from the mental ward, Dr. Laura Scott (Adams), whom both end up looking towards a professor in parapsychology, Dr. Gubner (Persoff) for help in not only figuring out Arnold super whammy powers, but also how to stop him.

I think this is an excellent example of an inexpensive film done really well, displaying how far a solid story, a decent script, a professional cast of actors, and a good amount of effort can go towards producing an enjoyable film, one much better than I would have thought given its B movie trappings. The movie reminded me a lot of an earlier film titled The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971), featuring Vincent Price, in that the main character seeks revenge, through highly unusual means, against those he sees responsible for the death of a loved one. While the death scenes here, which got progressively more fantastic, aren't as elaborate as in `Phibes', they're still entertaining and even slightly comedic. One of the aspects I really liked about this film was how director Danton, who was primarily an actor in his time, kept things moving along, reasonably focused, and used great location shots to his advantage. Very little time was wasted, and my interest was maintained throughout the nearly hour and a half running time. As far as the actors I thought they all did well, especially Hutton and Burke in their roles. In the beginning one can't help but feel a sense of sympathy for Hutton's character, but that changes quickly, especially when Arnold begins playfully taunting the police. One slightly, strange aspect was how far the filmmakers went to prove how deserving each of Arnold's victims were, like the doctor who was about to engage in a sleazy, adulterous affair prior to his death, the nurse who purposely and shamelessly flirted with her terminally ill, bed-ridden patient (exposing her cleavage and such), and the belligerent butcher (who was Arnold's mother's coroner, I believe) who had a penchant for ripping off his customers, and suffered perhaps the nastiest demise. As far as the lawyer character and his eventual fate, there really didn't seem a need to vilify him as most people I know who've had experiences with his ilk would have loved to have done what Arnold did, that is dropping a two-ton cement block on top of his head. Another thing, there was just enough psuedo scientific material, provided by Persoff's character of Dr. Gubner, to lend a sense of believability to Arnold's newfound abilities, thus requiring less of a suspension of disbelief than one would normally expect in a film like this...again, credit goes here to the strength of the material relative to the genre. I also appreciated Adam's character, that of Dr. Scott, a strong, vibrant, caring individual caught between concerns for the welfare of her ex-patient but also fearful of his involvement in the murders. My favorite scene in the film features Neville Brand as a butcher and Della Reese as a dissatisfied customer, the two engaging in a heated exchange with regards to his dishonest business practices. Neither one seemed willing back down an inch...who hasn't wanted to tell off a dishonest merchant at least once in their life like Ms. Reese did here?

The widescreen (1.85:1) picture on this Elite Entertainment DVD release looks very clean and clear, and the Dolby Digital 2.0 audio comes through well. The only extra included is an original theatrical trailer.

Cookieman108

By the way, I have nothing against lawyers personally...they may not be well received in general, but when you need one, be thankful if you find a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable b-movie.......2005-04-03

The basic idea of this is that Arnold Masters is sent to a mental hospital for committing a crime he thinks he didn't commit and befriends a black man who not only believes him but gives him his black magic set after he dies. He is set free from the hospital after some bizarre happenings and comes home to find life in the old house has become dilapidated and filled with cobwebs. Being on his own since his mother passed away, he reads the old letters he sent to his mother and sees that they were partially censored which he finds deeply upsetting. He venges to make the people who done him wrong pay. And he makes sure he does that by using the black magic set he was given. One by one the victims are killed and the police are clueless to who it is until the missing pieces suddenly fall into place.

While the acting may be a bit ropey occasionally, the film plays out extremely well and occasionally has a few blackly comical scenes in the mix to ease the viewer somewhat. The tension though is created well and altogether the film is compelling viewing. Some scenes such as The Nurse's Death will provide enough amusement for all and the operatic property expert might possibly raise a chuckle or two. Sure there are shades of Psycho and possibly The Wicker Man about it ( but the last reference is only somewhat brief ) but the film can easily hold itself on it's own. Ultimately it is a really enjoyable movie but one that is utterly bleak in it's outlook on revenge and loss and the sad ending to this only makes it all the more so.

4 out of 5 stars Can't believe how much I still love this film..........2005-02-18

I was in my early teens when this film came out. I remeber wanting to see it because I was a HUGE fan of Jim Hutton's, and for the most part I enjoyed Paul Burk.

I was so impressed how good Jim Hutton was in this film. He scared me SILLY! Now here it is 30 years later, and he still scared me. Dispite the so so script, this was a really cool B film.

I am still disappointed at Paul Burk's performance, not his best. But still a good film for a late night shiver.

5 out of 5 stars Good 70's chiller.......2001-09-06

Psychic Killer is my favourite 70's B movie. The idea, and story of a killer who does not have to be near is victims, is handled exceptionally well. Jim Hutton is excellent as usual and the supporting cast relish in their roles. One either to buy or to borrow, but you must see it.

4 out of 5 stars A cop killing innocent people? You mean a maniac cop?.......2007-05-21

First of all, let me clarify that the four star rating only qualifies in the genre of slightly-schlocky gore. For those of you that don't appreciate this type of movie, it's more like one star. But if you're looking to buy the DVD and reading this review, I have a feeling you're into this.

That being said, this is top quality when it comes to off-kilter horror action. A monstrous killer dressed like a cop is on the loose in New York, killing innocent people instead of criminals. One cop lets the paper know that they think it's a cop gone bad, which turns the public against the police force.

As the terror level escalates Bruce Campbell is framed for the murder of his wife, and becomes the lead suspect in the brutal killings. Now, only Bruce and two other cops know the chilling secret of the maniac cop, and will stop at nothing to try to stop him.

Although there are numerous amounts of "what the...?" sections in this film, it's still mindlessly enjoyable and Tom Atkins' performance as a hardnose cop keeps the film tenuously grounded in reality.

If you're into Bruce Campbell and silly horror movies, then you can't go wrong with Maniac Cop. If you're at all averse to either of those, then don't even bother thinking about it because you won't appreciate the hidden quality of such a classic as Maniac Cop.

4 out of 5 stars Kill Street Blues..........2007-01-19

MANIAC COP is a wonderful revenge film. Robert Z'Dar is the title character, a shadowy, towering killer who was once an NYPD hero. Is he alive? Dead? Something in between? Tom Atkins (The Fog, Night Of The Creeps) is the officer attempting to find and stop the maniacal man in blue. Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead 1 and 2, Bubba Ho Tep) is a likely suspect. Legendary Richard Roundtree (Shaft) is the police commisioner and William Smith (Invasion Of The Beegirls, Memorial Valley Massacre) is a captain! Larry Cohen's writing shines through this gloomy tale, w/ familar faces from his past work. Not very scary, but fun to watch...

4 out of 5 stars Phantom of the Cop-era.......2007-01-07

This Larry Cohen flick (produced and scripted by Cohen but directed by William Lustig) is a clever hybrid of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA story, 1970s and 1980s cop films, and the slasher sub-genre of horror cinema. But instead of an opera house, the venue has expanded to include the entire city of New York, and the wronged antagonist is not a forgotten composer but is, instead, a once-good police officer (hulking actor Robert Z'Dar) who was used as a scapegoat by higher-ups and was subsequently murdered in prison at the hands of thugs. Slasher-film elements come into play when the resurrected cop leaves a trail of corpses in his wake as he heads to city hall to even the score with his former bosses.

As is usually the case, Cohen's script is replete with dark tongue-in-cheek humor and palatable helpings of terror and blood. The gags (both the laughing and choking kind) are bolstered by the presence of horror-genre fave Bruce Campbell, he of EVIL DEAD (1981) fame; Tom Atkins, a ubiquitous face in police departments on TV and in the cinema; sexpot Laurene Landon, a Cohen favorite; and the original SHAFT (1971) himself, Richard Roundtree. There are also some delightful cameos from genre regulars like the late George "Buck" Flower, Victoria Catlin (known to genre fans from her role in David Lynch's TV series TWIN PEAKS), Judy Levitt (wife of STAR TREK's Walter Koenig), director William Lustig, and SPIDERMAN (2002) director Sam Raimi.

The Special-Edition DVD of MANIAC COP from Synapse is well worth the price of admission. It offers a crisp, rich digital transfer of the film in the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (enhanced for 16x9 TVs) with the original Stereo SurroundSound soundtrack (as well as the option of using new Dolby 5.1 or DTS 6.1 soundtracks). Extras include a delightful feature commentary with Larry Cohen, Bruce Campbell, and William Lustig; a new interview with the Maniac Cop himself, Robert Z'Dar; theatrical trailers, including one from France; and much more.

MANIAC COP is a must-see for fans of Larry Cohen and slasher-flick fans, and the Synapse DVD will make a nice addition to the film collection of any horror fan.

5 out of 5 stars Classic film by William Lustig .......2006-12-25

Memorable guilty pleasure from the 1980's only in the time period could it be produced. However, it's actually not that bad. The performances here including Bruce Campbell, and Tom Atikis are very passable. There's a crazy killer masquerading as a cop in New York which nowadays would be very normal. It was directed by William Lustig of the classic film "Maniac: so I knew it would deliver the goods. It's not quite predictable either. He knows how to build tension and sometimes fool the viewer into thinking the killer will strike (as seen in the scene where a paranoid woman shoots a young cop thinking he's the killer).

The special effects and gore are fine. The movie never gets too boring and is very entertaining till the end. Robert Z'Dar as the Maniac who doesn't have any dialogue at all is very menacing as the Maniac. We also get a side story into how the mayor and other politicians know the reason why this guy is killing yet cover it up. This flick has it all. The sequels I heard are not that great but the first is always a classic.

The DVD has great stuff added to it including a couple of deleted scenes, a great featurette with Z'Dar himself, trailers and commentary.

"Maniac Cop" is a truly a horror classic. You know this plot as dumb as it sounds apply today to what's going in law enforcement isn't that far fetched (except for the part that this guy is unstoppable.) Recommended if you like any of Lustig's work.

4 out of 5 stars Beware The Fuzz.......2006-12-06

Maniac Cop! Hell, the movie just sounds like loads of fun, doesn't it? I've always liked this film since the good ol' days when HBO would actually show these kinds of films at night. The title pretty much sums up what you're in for. A cop(he's a maniac) goes around terrorizing the streets of the Big Apple.
It's all revenge for getting screwed by the system. The cop isn't too picky about who he kills either. He wants revenge on the police department, but he's more than happy to slice up innocent civilians for kicks. A detective on the case slowly starts putting the pieces together while another cop is being set up by the Maniac Cop to be the fall guy. This film is full of great B movie character actors. Tom Atkins(THE Tom Atkins) plays the detective, while Bruce Campbell(in a serious role) plays the innocent cop accused of the killings. Richard Roundtree is the police commissioner, and all around badazz, William Smith, is his lieutenant. The Maniac Cop himself is played by Robert friggin' Z'Dar. This cool, underrated actor you may remember as the evil looking dude with the big jaw from Tango and Cash("Fry Tango!!!!"). The Maniac Cop himself is a bit confusing coz it's never clearly defined if he's a walking corpse out for revenge, or just so much of a badazz that he can't be killed. There's evidence to support both theories, but it's ultimately up to the viewer to decide. It's all great B movie fun, and handled very well considering the talent involved. B movie crusader Bill Lustig directs and Larry Cohen(who should need no introduction) wrote the screenplay. These two guys would cover similar ground a few years later with their film, Uncle Sam. Add to that, the great cast, you get a great and forgotten police thriller/horror film from the 80s. Well worth the moola, though the asking price is a tad high. Synapse does another good job, providing an entertaining commentary track with Cohen, Lustig, Campbell and composer Chattaway. Also included is a 10+ minute interview with Robert friggin Z'Dar himself! He seems like a very cool guy. A very good package.

Avoid.
