The greatest trilogy in film history, presented in the most ambitious sets in DVD history, comes to a grand conclusion with the extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Not only is the third and final installment of Peter Jackson's adaptation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien the longest of the three, but a full 50 minutes of new material pushes the running time to a whopping 4 hours and 10 minutes. The new scenes are welcome, and the bonus features maintain the high bar set by the first two films, The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers.

What's New?
One of the scenes cut from the theatrical release but included here, the resolution of the Saruman storyline, generated a lot of publicity when the movie opened, as actor Christopher Lee complained in the press about losing his only appearance. It's an excellent scene, one Jackson calls "pure Tolkien," and provides better context for Pippin to find the wizard's palantir in the water, but it's not critical to the film. In fact, "valuable but not critical" might sum up the ROTK extended edition. It's evident that Jackson made the right cuts for the theatrical run, but the extra material provides depth and ties up a number of loose ends, and for those sorry to see the trilogy end (and who isn't?) it's a welcome chance to spend another hour in Middle-earth. Some choice moments are Gandalf's (Ian McKellen) confrontation with the Witch King (we find out what happened to the wizard's staff), the chilling Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor, and Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) being mistaken for Orc soldiers. We get to see more of Éowyn (Miranda Otto), both with Aragorn and on the battlefield, even fighting the hideously deformed Orc lieutenant, Gothmog. We also see her in one of the most anticipated new scenes, the Houses of Healing after the battle of the Pelennor Fields. It doesn't present Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) as a savior as the book did, but it shows the initial meeting between Éowyn and Faramir (David Wenham), a relationship that received only a meaningful glance in the theatrical cut.

If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.

And for those who complained, no, there are no new endings, not even the scouring of the Shire, which many fans were hoping to see. Nor is there a scene of Denethor (John Noble) with the palantir, which would have better explained both his foresight and his madness. As Jackson notes, when cuts are made, the secondary characters are the first to go, so there is a new scene of Aragorn finding the palantir in Denethor's robes. Another big difference is Aragorn's confrontation with the King of the Dead. In the theatrical version, we didn't know whether the King had accepted Aragorn's offer when the pirate ships pulled into the harbor; here Jackson assumes that viewers have already experienced that tension, and instead has the army of the dead join the battle in an earlier scene (an extended cameo for Jackson). One can debate which is more effective, but that's why the film is available in both versions. If you feel like watching the relatively shorter version you saw in the theaters, you can. If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.

How Are the Bonus Features?
To complete the experience, The Return of the King provides the same sprawling set of features as the previous extended editions: four commentary tracks, sharp picture and thrilling sound, and two discs of excellent documentary material far superior to the recycled material in the theatrical edition. Those who have listened to the seven hours of commentary for the first two extended editions may wonder if they need to hear more, but there was no commentary for the earlier ROTK DVD, so it's still entertaining to hear Jackson break down the film (he says the beacon scene is one of his favorites), discuss differences from the book, point out cameos, and poke fun at himself and the extended-edition concept ("So this is the complete full strangulation, never seen before, here exclusively on DVD!"). The documentaries (some lasting 30 minutes or longer) are of their usual outstanding quality, and there's a riveting storyboard/animatic sequence of the climactic scene, which includes a one-on-one battle between Aragorn and Sauron.

One DVD Set to Rule Them All
Peter Jackson's trilogy has set the standard for fantasy films by adapting the Holy Grail of fantasy stories with a combination of fidelity to the original source and his own vision, supplemented by outstanding writing, near-perfect casting, glorious special effects, and evocative New Zealand locales. The extended editions without exception have set the standard for the DVD medium by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features. --David Horiuchi

This was the completion to my LOTR collection. Great buy and even better to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD!.......2007-06-27

This is the best option to have the Lord of The Rings. Maybe it looks simple outside, but is luxurious inside, very complete, very nice design in everything.
It has Spanish subtitles, and includes an interactive map of the Middle Earth or at least the part of the jorney covered in this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Film!!!!.......2007-06-26

this product is a truly experience in dvd. Extras, comentaries, galleries, etc A lot really. Where to begin? well you better buy it to find out.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Three.......2007-05-13

Clearly the BEST movie of the three in the series. I had originally purchased the extended version sets together and, like an idiot sent one of the appendices to Netflix by accident. The appendices were so good and contained so much information about the making of the movie that I was pretty distraught about it. Netflix sent me a credit of twenty dollars, so I purchased this single set to make mine whole again. I would have done the same thing if I had not received any credit, it (the movie) is that good.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Have All 3.......2007-04-27

the ring trilogy is the ultimate battle between good and evil...and the same struggle within, that we all must face...
...some have criticized these films for not measuring up to the written novels...well i would have to agree with them, but i think it is unfair to "compare something to itself"...they give it like one star?
i mean, come on now...if these same people had not read the books, they would not have been let down...that is only because the books are just too damn good, no movie could ever measure up to them.
...i read these books in middle school in the 80's...loved all of them...the movies do a great job bringing the books to life...the only thing they need to do now is make one more movie out of the first book, "The Hobbit"...they only touched on it for a second or two in the films.
these 3 are my favorite movies of all time.
there's only one thing that sucks about that:
it takes me a whole day to watch all 3...it is hard to find the time.

Broadcast to record ratings on the TNT cable network, this Raiders-esque adventure does not go by the book, staring with its atypical action hero and his decidedly uncool profession. Flynn Carsen (Noah Wylie from E.R.) is a thirtysomething perpetual student who still lives with his mother (Olympia Dukakis). When his exasperated professor finally ejects him into the real world, Carsen's Holmesian deductive acumen lands him a job as the librarian at the Metropolitan Library. This is not an ordinary library. It houses history's most mythic artifacts, including the Ark of the Covenant, Pandora's Box, and the sword Excalibur. The fate of the world is in Carsen's hands ("That's so sad," he observes) when the dread Serpent Brotherhood steals the library's Spear of Destiny, and Carsen must retrieve it. His reluctant, and antagonistic, partner is Nicole (Sonya Walger), who is as skilled in martial arts as Carsen is schooled in the Dewey Decimal System. Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin add welcome comic relief, with Newhart, of all people, getting into the action by film's end. The humble hero (who would rather be known as "Flynn, the rather pleasant at parties"), somewhat cheesy special effects, and corny comedy make The Librarian a fun guilty pleasure. As Carsen proclaims, "Being a librarian is actually a cool job." This looks like the beginning of a beautiful franchise. --Donald Liebenson

Then the Serpent Brotherhood, seeking world domination, steals one of three parts of the magical Spear of Destiny from the library. Only Flynn, aided by a gorgeous bodyguard, has the knowhow to thwart their plan. But does he know how to be a hero? He will - even if he has to gouge, kick, punch, brave Mayan death traps and plunge off icy precipices every inch of the way!

4 out of 5 stars great romance, great characters, great fun!.......2007-05-19

So, this movie wasn't Indiana Jones. So what? What is? They did they best they could with a limited budget. So it had factual errors? So did Indiana Jones, so did the Mummy, so did National Treasure and Sahara. Does that make them less enjoyable movies? Not to me. So, give this movie a chance before you bash it.

This movie was superbly cast, given the TV movie budget. Noah Wylie was the geeky and goofy, but kinda cute, intellectual Flynn Carson, who finds himself in his thirties, living with his mother, while having amassed 22 degrees (is that even possible?) and is no longer welcome in school. He's told to get a job (and a life) and is thrust into the real world. His well-meaning mother (Olympia Dukakis) is constantly trying to fix him up, in the mean time. So, here is Flynn, a genius with 22 degrees, and he doesn't have employers beating down his door with jobs? I took a star off for that being really inplausible.

Flynn finds an invitation to interview with the Metropolitan Libary. After waiting a whole day in line, he goes into an interview with cranky Jane Curtain, humorless director of library, although she was actually pretty funny. In a funny sequence, he deducts, with Sherlock Holmes logic, that she's recently divorced and had three different cats. Surprise, he meets a Judson, the senior librarian (Bob Newhart). They take him on a magical tour of the portion of the library that few people know about; it's stocked with antiquities that the rest of the world doesn't (or shouldn't) know about: the REAL Mona Lisa, the Holy Grail, unicorns, the golden goose, the arc of the covenant, pandora's box, among other things. The Librarians are keepers of these great treasures. And it's the Librarian's job to keep them secret from the public.

On Flynn's first official day, they discover that the library was broken into and a band of theives took only one thing: one-third of the Spear of Destiny, the spear that lanced Christ's side. To wield it gives the user great power. Hitler had a third. Napoleon had a third. So basically, humanity is SOL if the evil Serpend Brotherhood gets all three pieces. The only clues as to where the other three pieces are in in the Language of the Birds, which no living human being can translate- (of which, our hero does so in less than 6 hours). Thus, Flynn's on the job training begins.

Flynn finds himself on a flight to the Amazon while he steadily attempts to translate the language of the birds. Judson manages to come on Flynn's personal TV in coach, telling Flynn, "Trust No One." Unbeknownst to Flynn, the Serpent Brotherhood is on the plane, too! The horrors! A beautiful, but arrogant, Amazonian woman sits beside him, and eventually saves his hide (in a fantastic, yet unbelievable sort of way). When they escape to the jungle, she introduces herself as Nicole Noone (here's No One, get it!? Nyuck, Nyuck) and she has no interest in anything but keeping the Librarian alive. Thus, the adventure begins.

There was one romance scene, but really, most of it was just implied, not shown, so this movie is safe for the kiddies over the age of 8. There was great romantic tension between Flynn and Nicole. Wylie really flexed his comic muscle in this film (I never knew he had one). The best part, in my opinion, was when Bob Newhart got into a Ninja fight (you heard right!) with the Serpent Brotherhood (anybody else want a piece of me!?!). I laughed- Semper Fi! Overall this is a good movie if you need something funny and cute with good chemistry in it.

4 out of 5 stars Librarian - Quest for the Speak.......2007-05-09

I enjoyed this movie. I like the adventure and excitement of the whole thing. It is just plain fun with some imagination! Hope they make a third.

4 out of 5 stars Amusing.......2007-05-07

Noah Wyle exceeded expectations and Bob Newhart & Jane Curtain were fun to see in action. The premise of the film was interesting, and the special effects were just fine.

5 out of 5 stars the Librarian Quest for the Spear.......2007-03-29

Excellent, more of the movie on the dvd than on tv...I love this adventure!

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for a TV show.......2007-03-16

We actually watched Return to "King Solomon's Mines" first and enjoyed it, although the special effects were a bit cheesy. It was good family fare, so we bought "Quest for the Spear". We thought it was actually better than "Solomon's Mines" and the special effects were more believable in some instances. We call it "Indiana Jones Lite".

Jim Henson's fantasy epic The Dark Crystal doesn't take place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, but like Star Wars it takes the audience to a place that exists only in the imagination and, for an hour and a half, on the screen. Recalling the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, Henson tells the story of a race of grotesque birdlike lizards called the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. A prophecy tells of a Gelfling (a small elfin being) who will topple their empire, so in their reign of terror they have exterminated the race, or so they think. The orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal (which gives the Skeksis their power) and restore the balance of the universe. Henson and codirector Frank Oz have pushed puppetry into a new direction: traditional puppets, marionettes, giant bodysuits, and mechanical constructions are mixed seamlessly in a fantasy world of towering castles, simple huts, dank caves, a giant clockwork observatory, and a magnificent landscape that seem to have leaped off the pages of a storybook. Muppet fans will recognize many of the voice actors--a few characters sound awfully close to familiar comic creations--but otherwise it's a completely alien world made familiar by a mythic quest that resonates through stories over the ages. --Sean Axmaker

This movie I bought because I had never seen it. If you don't mind squaking bird sounds and nails on a chalkboard- than go for it. I had a headache half way through. This movie has more noise than dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Crystal.......2007-06-15

There are 10 Skekses left in the world. This cruel, violent species's emporer is dying. There are 10 Mystics left in the world. The wisest Mysitc is dying. When the Mystic leader (the dying one) was younger he rescued a Gelfling from a Skekses raid (there were more of each species back then) and dubbed him Jem. The Mystics taught him everything - except the prophecy (IF YOU TRY TO STOP A PROPHECY IN A MOVIE YOU WILL FAIL, PERIOD.) The prophecy said that if a Gelfling does not repair the Crystal, located in the Crystal Castle, before the 3 suns lined up the world will be plunged into a time of evil forever. Skekses send bug-monsters to catch and kill Jem. Jem goes to the ugly witch Olgra to get the shard which came off. As he turns to leave, the bug-monster things attack Olgra's dome-house. Then they carry off Olgra, but she turns out not to be a Gelfling, let alone Jem. Jem is running for dear life. Then this puffball dog thing growls at him. A girl Gelfling comes out and says something to the puffball, who shuts up. It turns out that the Pod People had saved HER from the SAME raid. Love love lovie dovie. Jem goes to the Pod People with Kira, but then the bugs attack again, and carry off the Pod People, who also turn out not to be Gelflings. Then the bugs actually almost get them, but Kira grabs Jem and flies down a handy cliff. Jem says that he doen't have wings, but Kira replies that, of course not, he's a BOY! Then a Skekse gets banished, and says NOT to repair the Crystal, because they didn't need to, no, they could just live out here forever. Jem thwacks him, and Skekse gets cut.

Although the characters are Muppets, there are no real jokes. Plenty of adventure. So good, my critical-of-every-detail dad watched it twice a day for who knows how long. Also, in 2008, a sequel called the Power of the Dark Crystal will come out, but with (ugh) ANAMATRONIC PUPPETS. I will watch both, personally.

Amazon.com essential video

Fractured fairy tales of a darker hue provide the remarkable context for Into the Woods, which deconstructs the Brothers Grimm by way of Rod Serling. While the faces and names are familiar, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, and company inhabit a sylvan neighborhood in which witches and bakers are next-door neighbors, handsome princes from once-parallel fables are competitive (and equally vain) brothers, and all the stories intersect through unexpected new plot twists.

Stephen Sondheim's Tony-winning score favors intricate ensemble numbers that present the characters' divergent, then overlapping fears and desires. And it's the latter category that provides a primary thread to James Lapine's ingenious puzzle of a book, which coheres around the inevitability--and treachery--of our innermost wishes. That theme is given farcical energy in the first act, which offers enough comic invention, tart dialogue, and witty music for a satisfying evening of theater as is.

Instead, Sondheim and Lapine offer a bold, darker second act that takes a look at what happens after "happily ever after," elevating the work beyond inspired parody toward allegorical gravity. By the final scenes, with the one-two punch of the score's two most enduring songs, "No One Is Alone" and "Children Will Listen," what began as a clever diversion has touched deeper nerves and primed some tear ducts. This video production by the original Broadway cast gets its marquee shimmer from Bernadette Peters's wonderful witch, but the standout (and Tony winner as Best Actress) is Joanna Gleason, who gives the Baker's Wife a mixture of warmth, pragmatism, and sudden, poignantly romantic radiance.

The DVD version is comparatively no-frills, given its American Playhouse origins, but multiformat digital audio renders the musical performances in immaculate detail. --Sam Sutherland

It has always taken the American public about thirty years to appreciate Sondheim, since his work tends to hold a mirror up to the audience and say, "Look: this is you; you've done this". As a result, the audience doesn't always warm up to the collaborations in which Sondheim finds interesting. To have the foresight to hire Terry Hughes to place four cameras on the stage of the Martin Beck Theatre to capture "Into The Woods" for it's premier production was nothing short of brilliance. Thirty years from now, this will be a treasure: Johanna Gleason, Bernadette Peters, Kim Crosby, Chip Zien. One never forgets that we are watching a live performance, yet the cameras do the work of a director who is a genius-only a television director could pull this off. By now, you should all know that this particular musical is a classic, brilliant and perfect for the entire family as you can bathe up the kids, pop the corn, un-pop the wine and pause at intermission to put the kids to bed so that you can come back down to see what happens after "Happily Ever After." Some of the most creative writing has gone into this work, James Lapine is a genius and deserves equal credit to Sondheim-I am certain that he would agree-but still, it's the brilliance of the music and lyrics that blend into the book of this musical that creates such a beautiful story. "Careful the things you say: Children will listen."

5 out of 5 stars Original is Best.......2007-05-17

'Into the Woods' may be the funniest musical I've ever seen. With cast members such as Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason it is not to be missed. A plot with interweaving fairy tales definitely keeps you on your toes!

5 out of 5 stars Into The Woods.......2007-05-09

Wonderful, very enjoyable. My 8th grader was in a production of this play for The Roeper Theater Company in Birmingham, MI and I hosted the cast party after the last show. I had this playing in the background for them and they really enjoyed seeing how "their" part was portrayed on Broadway. Lots of laughs.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Any Sondheim Fan.......2007-05-06

This is a really excellent production from top to bottom. The music is brilliant, the lyrics even better, and the cast is stunning.

Truly, the only thing I can criticise about this DVD is the lack of any special features. Everything else is brilliant.

4 out of 5 stars BACK TO THE WOODS.......2007-04-24

I liked it but not nearly as much as composer Stephen Sondheim and writer James Lapine's other taped Broadway DVD's, "Sunday In The Park With George", and "Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street". Here, being characters from genuine fairy tales, the cast never emerges as anything but playthings in a morality tale, a slick and profound adult lesson to be sure, but with cut-out mature representation almost verging on the parody of "Avenue Q", that never wanders far from the simplistic fairly tales it draws from. Bernadette Peters' 'Witch' seems inspired by an "I Love Lucy" episode, and it is typical of the superficial characterizations the musical offers. Still, it delivers what you can expect from a Sondheim/Lapine project; a sweeping musical that ultimately offers produndity in the mundane. It's just not my particular cup of poison.

Product Description

From the blockbuster-making team who produced and directed PEARL HARBOR and THE ROCK (Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay) comes the biggest movie of 1998 -- ARMAGEDDON! Starring the explosive talents of Bruce Willis (DIE HARD), Academy Award(R)-winners Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE), Liv Tyler (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), Steve Buscemi (CON AIR), and Will Patton (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), ARMAGEDDON is a meteor storm of action-adventure moviemaking that has you on the edge of your seat forgetting to breathe! When NASA's executive director, Dan Truman (Thornton), realizes the Earth has 18 days before it's obliterated by a meteor the size of Texas, he has only one option -- land a ragtag team of roughneck oil drillers on the asteroid and drop a nuclear warhead into its core. Spectacular special effects, laugh-out-loud humor, great characters, riveting storytelling, and heartfelt emotion make ARMAGEDDON an exhilarating thrill ride you'll want to experience like there's no tomorrow.

Amazon.com essential video

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid- fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy

5 out of 5 stars "We have 18 days before it hits Earth...".......2007-06-10

This action-packed, fast paced, movie has it all and it keeps your attention as well. People need to understand that Hollywood makes millions of dollars with this particular style of film, and who is to blame them. If something gives you a positive outcome, then it would be foolish not to attempt it again. I also understand that there are those movies that are on a category of their own and that break the boundaries of a typical Hollywood movie. But, Armaggedon serves its main purpose. It keeps you entertained and it has all the elements that make an action movie great. Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer are a lethal combination when it comes to this particular genre of movies, and I feel that is an honest compliment to admit that they are two of the best out there. Job well done!

4 out of 5 stars Armageddon.......2007-06-08

All the right stuff for this gang.... What a way to save the world.

5 out of 5 stars Action Packed And A Whole Lot Of Fun!.......2007-06-04

I don't understand it when people say that this movie is not realistic, it never claims to be! It is a fun ride with with a great sound track and cast. I don't want this type of movie to be realistic, it would be too boring! This was the biggest hit of the year it was released for good reason......IT'S ENTERTAINING!!!!! That is what a movie should be! I watch a movie to escape and be swooped away from reality and that is what Armageddon does very well. If you can't just sit back and enjoy this movie with some popcorn and a soda than I feel sorry for you. Life is too short to not enjoy a great flick like Armageddon! I can't wait until it comes out in HD! Now go put the DVD in the player and hang on! :-)

1 out of 5 stars The perfect movie for stupid people!.......2007-05-30

Armageddon ranks up there with one of the absolute worst movies I've had the misfortune of seeing. It gives new meaning to the phrase 'over the top'. (Bigger is not better). Why is it that Hollywood insists on giving 99% of the attention to ridiculous special fx and 1% to the script/writing? Mega budget blockbusters like Armageddon are the most guilty of misappropriation of resources. Somebody please make Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer stop ...

4 out of 5 stars Like a good friend.......2007-05-12

The music, how it is cut and taken - has a good feeling about it. One of those film I put on while I'm home doing something. And it keep's me company.

Quest for Fire is so detailed in its depiction of prehistoric man that it might have been made by time-traveling filmmakers. Instead it's a bold and timeless experiment by visionary director Jean-Jacques Annaud (The Bear), inviting scientific debate while presenting a fascinating, imaginary glimpse of humankind some 80,000 years ago. Using diverse locations in Kenya, Scotland, and Canada, Annaud tells the purely visual story of five tribes (some more advanced than others) who depend on fire for survival. They "steal" fire from nature, but the actual creation of fire remains elusive, lending profound mystery and majesty to the film's climactic, real-time display of fire-making ingenuity. Employing primitive language created by novelist Anthony Burgess and body language choreographed by anthropologist Desmond Morris, a unique ensemble of actors push the envelope of their profession, succeeding where they easily could've failed. They're carnal, violent, funny, curious, and intelligent; through them, and through the eons, we can recognize ourselves. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A colossal adventure odyssey that turns back the hands of time to the very beginning of man's existence. 80,000 years ago, when man roamed the earth, he was exposed to the many harsh elements of nature. Against the perilous atmosphere of rugged terrain, rival tribes and savage beasts, Quest for Fire examines a peaceful tribe's search for that all important element fire, and the knowledge to create it. Focusing on human dream as well as realistic insights into pre-historic man, the constant struggle for survival is vividly recreated in this sensational production.

5 out of 5 stars Best Caveman movie ever!.......2007-05-14

This movie is a classic, no dialogue, but brilliantly done and shows how cave men, early primitive man lived and interacted and what was important for them. Lots of fun, very enjoyable movie.

5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-05-13

This movie is great. I am sure not many people will like it, but it goes along with my tastes. It has a good story to it. I recommend everyone to watch at least once.

5 out of 5 stars 80,000 years ago!.......2007-04-14

Three men must find fire for their tribe. They don't know how to make fire just control it. So when their fire goes out they go south to find the flames that will help keep them safe from wild animals, cook their food and keep back the darkness of the night. Shot in Scotland, Canada and Africa the settings really seem harsh and dangerous.
Two commentary tracks and a Quest For Fire Adventure Featurette really brings out how hard it was to film this movie. Weather, the use of real animals, and the need to try to be as realistic as science could make them were all big factors when making the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Really cool movie.......2007-04-12

Kind of a strange film but definatly worth seeing. Its like the first section of 2001: a space oddesy meets Lord of the Rings. An eye-opening prespective on an idea of where we as creatured of this earth may have come from, and offers a unique juxtaposition to tribulations we face in our world today.

3 out of 5 stars I HATE double sided disks!!!.......2007-03-29

I like these movies (and unlike most, actually like the Destroyer better), but was very disappointed in the packaging. I just hate double sided disks, for one. Would it have been too much effort to put each movie on its own disk?
I also was not pleased with the letterbox version of the Destroyer either.
Movies are great, though, if you like the sword and sorcery thing.

Conan - The Complete Quest (Conan The Barbarian/The Destroyer) is a great movie for any mans colection. You get to see all the blood that they don't show on t.v. when they show this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Krush ur enemuhs und heer da lamentations of der weemen!.......2007-02-08

It's true that the packaging could be better, I wish it wasn't a double sided DVD, I really hate those. However you are getting two movies for $10 and one of them is the special edition version so there is very little room to complain.

Conan The Barbarian is a phenomenal fantasy movie; not much like the Howard stories is still a very fun movie to watch. The documentary is nothing to write home about but it gives you some nice insight into the making of this classic.

Conan The Destroyer has always been too campy for my taste. The only thing I like about it is the action scenes and the great soundtrack which I consider to be far superior and more memorable the original score.

Star Trek fans were decidedly mixed in their reactions to this, the ninth big-screen feature in Paramount's lucrative Trek franchise, but die-hard loyalists will appreciate the way this Next Generation adventure rekindles the spirit of the original Trek TV series while combining a tolerable dose of New-Agey philosophy with a light-hearted plot for the NextGen cast. This time out, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his executive crew must transport to a Shangri-la-like planet to see why their android crewmate Data (Brent Spiner) has run amuck in a village full of peaceful Ba'ku artisans who--thanks to their planet's "metaphasic radiation"--haven't aged in 309 years.

It turns out there's a conspiracy afoot, masterminded by the devious, gruesomely aged Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham, hamming it up under makeup resembling a cosmetic surgeon's worst nightmare), who's in cahoots with a renegade Starfleet admiral (Anthony Zerbe). They covet the fountain-of-youth power of the Ba'ku planet, but because their takeover plan violates Starfleet's Prime Directive of noninterference, it's up to Picard & crew to stop the scheme. Along the way, they all benefit from the metaphasic effect, which manifests itself as Worf's puberty (visible as a conspicuous case of Klingon acne), Picard's youthful romance with a Ba'ku woman (the lovely Donna Murphy), the touching though temporary return of Geordi's natural eyesight, and a moment when Troi asks Dr. Crusher if she's noticed that her "boobs are firming up."

Some fans scoffed at these humorous asides, but they're what make this Trek film as entertaining as it is slightly disappointing. Without the laughs (including Data's rousing excerpt from Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore), this is a pretty routine entry in the franchise, with no real surprises, a number of plot holes, and the overall appearance of a big-budget TV episode. As costar and director, Jonathan Frakes proves a capable carrier of the Star Trek flame--and it's nice to see women in their forties portrayed as smart and sexy--but while this is surely an adequate Trek adventure, it doesn't quite rank with the best in the series. --Jeff Shannon

Description

5 out of 5 stars 2 hour episdoe.......2007-06-12

Out of all the TNG movies this one was probaly like just a long version of the show. It was such a very simple concept. A movie based on the violation of the prime directive. It had moral dilemanas that had to be addressed and it reminded me so much of the show. If you are a fan of the show you will love this movie.

The only downside is it's not going to wow you with the fights or space battles. It's a solid movie but, if you aren't a trek fan this isn't the one that will convernt you like say Nemesis with the big battles there would. Still I definately recommemend this film.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad...for Star Trek.......2007-05-09

I forgot that I actually enjoyed this movie. Of all of the Star Trek films, this is the one that most closely resembles the series it was based upon.

4 out of 5 stars Jonathan Frakes has a hit, but not a smash.......2007-04-30

Before I go any further, allow me to make this clear: I am a die-hard Trekkie who grew up on the original series episodes and has come to love TNG as well, so I mean to call it like I see it.

I don't wish to give away any plot elements, but in order to adequately review the movie, I must make some minor "spoilers." This film highlights one of the ethical dilemmas that has come to be a hallmark of Star Trek since its inception. In a move rather similar to that of President Jackson in relocating the Southeastern Native American tribes, Starfleet officials in league with a shady group of aliens conspire to remove a primitive people from their world so that Federation citizens may reap the benefits of an unusual healing radiation emenating from the rings of said planet. Picard, ever the force of truth and justice, refuses to go along (hence the "Insurrection" title), leading to a battle between good and "greater good."

On the whole, I feel this was the most well-written and executed TNG Trek film. While I personally adored the previous 2, I thought their storylines were a bit contrived (not to mention the continuity errors caused by Kirk's "death" at the beginning of Generations). The deeper storyline of this movie is both its weakness and its strength; I had a bit of a problem following the plot the first time I saw the film, but after I was able to appreciate it, I realized how much better of a storyline it actually is. I highly recommend this movie to all TNG fans, and any Trekkie who enjoys the "ethical dilemma" storylines.

Fairy tales and contemporary satire collide in Ella Enchanted, based upon the enormously popular young adult novel by Gail Carson Levine. Ella (Anne Hathaway, The Princess Diaries) received an unfortunate fairy gift in her cradle: No matter what anyone tells her to do, she's compelled to obey. Despite this, Ella grows up to be a headstrong young woman who refuses to swoon at the sight of a charming young prince (Hugh Dancy). To get her gift removed, Ella braves a forest packed with ogres, elves, and giants to find her fairy godmother (Vivica A. Fox, Kill Bill, Vol. 1). Much like Shrek, Ella Enchanted is sprinkled with comic modern references; for some, this will make the whimsy too cute, while others will appreciate the snarky jabs. Also featuring Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Minnie Driver, Joanna Lumley, Eric Idle, and many others. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Anne Hathaway, the delightful star of THE PRINCESS DIARIES, is Ella in the charming fairy tale adventure ELLA ENCHANTED. On the day of her birth, Ella is given a gift by her Fairy Godmother -- the gift of obedience, which is also a curse. Under no circumstances can Ella refuse anything she is asked to do, no matter how wicked it may be. Tired of being taken advantage of, Ella, with a talking book as her companion, leaves home to find her Fairy Godmother and return her unwanted gift. This simple errand soon turns into an amazing journey filled with ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, elves, and the plotting of Prince Charmont's evil uncle who wants to take over the Crown and rule the kingdom. Bursting with colorful characters, music, wit, and whimsy, ELLA ENCHANTED is a truly enchanting and heartwarming tale that will captivate the entire family.

4 out of 5 stars fun, looney with a point.......2007-06-14

What would life be like if you obeyed literally everything you were told, even accidently, like "spill the beans"? You'd have no choice if someone found out your secret and used it against you. That's the case here, which gives some food for thought, but with lots of silly stuff, a great song and dance by Hathaway, and, of course, a happy ending with a handsome prince. Purely for fun.

5 out of 5 stars A very cute movie for all ages.......2007-05-23

This movie is appropriate for young children and is also very entertaining for adults. The music in it is wonderful and there are 80's tunes thrown in with some scenes, which is just hilarious. My little girls love it and I enjoy watching it with them. Very cute and harmless, and at the same time entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars Great kids movie!.......2007-05-11

My [...] loves Cinderella, and thinks this is a great movie too. I also enjoy watching it because it makes me feel young again (I always dreamed of owning a unicorn when I was young.) Anne Hathaway is a wonderful tween actress. I've seen her in older portrayals, but she's much better playing younger parts.

My daughter and I love this movie, but it's an either you love it or hate it movie. My husband hates it. I guess that's the reason for the bad and good reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Loved the movie..NOTHING like the book........2007-05-04

My daughter read Ella Enchanted for school and she liked it so much we decided to rent the movie. All throughout, my daughter kept saying, "That's not what happened!" "This is nothing like the book!". I finally just told her to stop and enjoy the movie for what it is. Nice movie, great for tweens, but don't expect it to be like the book.

5 out of 5 stars A NEW CLASSIC.......2007-03-31

I purhased Ella on DVD after my girls started watching it daily. My kids have limits on their TV time, and one movie takes up most of their daily allotment. I know a movie's a hit when my kids would rather watch it than tune into Nickelodean or the Disney channel. This movie will be one of our classics. I'll put it away for a while and every so often the kids will pull it out and watch it every day for a few days then back it will go until the next time.
Ella Enchanted is a new fairy tale that deals with human and civil rights issues in ways children can understand and still be entertained by. The storyline and narration are great, even for kids with short attention spans.
Since ordering the movie, I've also purchased the CD and book. I highly recommend this fun movie.

Brigitte Nielsen, as Conan creator Robert E. Howard's female warrior Red Sonja, gets an assist from Arnold Schwarzenegger in this enjoyably campy, Italian-lensed sword & sorcery adventure. Nielsen's thespian skills may be a bit stiff, but she certainly fills out the physical demands of the role, which asks her to look impressive with a sword as she avenges the death of her priestess sister and the theft of a sacred orb by an evil queen (Sandahl Bergman, also from the '82 theatrical Conan and a match for Nielsen's acting ability). Schwarzenegger (not playing Howard's barbarian king) lends some star power in a supporting role as a warrior assisting Sonja, and if the film stumbles in the acting, scripting, and special-effects departments, Richard Fleischer's direction and cinematography Giuseppe Rotunno are appropriately action-heavy and comic-book colorful (Fleischer also directed Conan the Destroyer and The Vikings); Ennio Morricone's bombastic score is another plus. --Paul Gaita

Description

After her family is murdered, a young woman becomes a master of the sword and seeks revenge on the evil queen responsible for the mayhem that has befallen her.

It arrived in a timely manner, before I was expecting it even. And, there wasn't even a dent in the box, still mint condition.

4 out of 5 stars When I was a kid!.......2007-02-06

When i was a kid I had two main heroes, He-man and Conan well and maybe JOhn Wayne and Vincent Price!! I am now 24, I always loved the Conan films they are in my top five fantasy films, always enjoyable to watch, The first Conan is great, the 2nd was good more kid friendly and then theres Red Sonja, It's more liek Conan the destroyer, its pretty good but not as good. I still enjoy it, it is what it is! Its a film you either like ot dont like. As a kid my dad had to rent it over and over,The last time I had seen it I was maybe 8 years old. I just recently puchased it two days ago, and I have to admit those old kid feelings came back, and if a film can do that it's gets a good grade in my book.

5 out of 5 stars Red Sonja is very, very good!.......2007-01-09
