Even a fine cast can't do much to breathe life into this thin gangster piece. Dennis Hopper stars as a pathetic small-timer trying to get ahead with one final score. The bad guys don't take him seriously, a cop (Wesley Snipes) is content to mow him down if necessary, and a woman (Lolita Davidovich) who cares about him just wants him to settle down. Director James B. Harris has the raw elements of a middling film noir in front of him, but he can't even link up the pieces enough to make Snipes and Hopper appear to be in the same movie. The DVD release has a full-screen presentation, Dolby sound, and closed captioning. --Tom Keogh

UFC 54 Boiling Point.......2007-01-04
fight 1: round one kinda weak but round 2 freakin awesome and unexpected.
next few fights kinda weak
last few fights pretty d*mn good!
must have for all ufc dvd collectors.
Another solid UFC event.......2006-03-27
As far as MMA goes UFC constantly puts on great shows with few exceptions and is argueably the premire organization in the world because of it. UFC 54 starts out strong with the prelim bout between James Irvin vs. Terry Martin and finishes strong with the main event between Liddell vs. Horn. There are a lot of great finishes and just some really solid matches across the entire card. My only gripe with the DVD is it isn't exactly full of content outside of the fights. It goes from the tale of the tape straight to the fights without the leading up to it like the DVDs past. That really is a minor flaw when considered how truly great the fights are overall. To someone not familiar with the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) but is interested in learning, I would recommend checking this one out with at least a rental. The fights deserve 5 stars the content 2 maybe even less.
St. Pierre is dangerous..........2006-02-28
Wow, what a sweet knee "no name guy #1" delivered to "no name guy #2" in that preliminary fight, ha! It was mostly luck, but it was still one of the most shattering flying knees I've seen in mixed martial arts.
The action continues with Diego Sanchez in his pay-per-view event debut, Tim Sylvia v. Tra Telligman and an unbelievable fight between Frank Trigg and George St. Pierre. I was actually looking forward to this fight more than the main event. Let's just say that St. Pierre is something else and I think Matt Hughes would be in trouble if they were to meet up again.
The Couture fight is a good one, as usual. I always enjoy watching "The Natural" do his thing. This guy is the Jerry Rice of MMA at 42 and he continues to impress.
Not to give too much away, but the main event is a bit lackluster. The fight lasts a while, but it's not all that competitive. It's exciting as hell to watch, because you know that Lidell has that "one punch" threat and Horn is a submission magician, but things fall into a pattern early and the flow doesn't stray far from that pattern through to the end.
This is a great set of fights!
Great fights, poor DVD production.......2006-02-18
UFC 54 is packed with high caliber, action packed fights. It seems to feature a little of everything; two of the most brutal knockouts ever, battles that go the distance, one extremely dominating performance in a fight you would assume would be more even, etc. Basically, there isn't one boring fight in the whole event.
The problem with this DVD is that literally everything but the fights is completely cut out. The blurbs on each fighter before the match where their skills and previous fights are talked about (along with a quick word from the fighter on how they see the match going) are gone. I've always found this to be a great way to get some pre-match background on the fighter, and even a way to get a sense of their personality & attitude in some cases. So are the interviews with Joe Rogan afterwards, the announcements of the fighters before the bought, etc. Granted at the end of the day the fight itself is what you want to see, but what is the point of cutting everything else out? I just hope this isn't a trend with the UFC DVD's going forward, that would be disappointing.
Nevertheless, this is still a must own.
The Best UFC Recent Event........2006-02-15
This incredible UFC event showcases the unbelievable matchup between Georges St. Pierre and Frank Trigg. For those that thought this would be a very difficult match for both men, lets just say that it was difficult for only one, LOL. It also features the return of UFC Icon Randy "The Natural" Couture showing that he is still a top contender in his division. The event concludes with the rematch between Chuck Liddell and Jeremy Horn for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.
This event has great fights through out the card with more talents competing. Great event to own and one worth purchasing.

Simmer Me Timbers, Lad.......2007-01-08
This film picks up more of a cult interest, due to the Viggo Mortenson factor and a couple of other interesting things going on. The scriptwriter should have waited until "Heat" came out before offering this up as a tension builder. The way the scenes went back and forth from crook to cop was interesting in a satirical way.Pulling Valerie Perrine out of retirement was another surprse cameo. The noir attempt did not work on anyone who knew Newark from LA. Dennis Hopper was too wrapped up in the 40's, making you think he was going "Back to Future" on us here. The explosion expected, the one where Viggo outwits Hopper, does not happen, or vice versa. Instead they stop the action and shut down with a lame ending to a promising caper flick. The dangerous charm of Viggo burns into your memory. A Michael Mann would take this flat script to greater heights.
Great Potential - Poor Dialogue.......2006-06-15
Boiling Point is an intriguing cop drama starring Wesley Snipes as the police officer, and Dennis Hopper with Viggo Mortensen as the pair of ex-cons that he's after. It's set up to be a film noir style story with an elegance - many references and scenes involving big band music, the tough-but-gentle prostitute, the cynical-but-caring girlfriend, even the slain partner who needs to be revenged.
There was a lot of potential here. The story starts with Wesley's character watching an undercover agent get shot. He then only has seven days to track down the killer before he's taken off the case. In the meantime, Dennis' character is fresh out of jail and only has 7 days to pay back a loan he owes. The movie deliberately sets up a lot of parallels like this. The scene where all three men are trying to 'win back' their exs is literally overlaid one on top of the other, showing how each man handles the situation. Dennis sweetly, gently talks his girlfriend into letting him stay. Viggo literally hits his girlfriend across the face before passionately kissing her. Wesley takes the arrogant approach with his ex-wife, telling her he's staying and that's that. The men's lives keep crossing and re-crossing without them realizing it, up until the final act.
I'm not quite sure, then, exactly why the movie seems so low in impact. These are all certainly fine actors. Dennis seemed to be playing out a cardboard stereotype, however, with far less acting power than pretty much any other role I'd seen him. His overzealous constant hand movements seem forced; his dialogue is strained. At least his character was given a back story that seems relatively believable, though. Poor Viggo has to put up with a character that was 2 dimensional from the start. All Viggo does is follow orders. He hits his girlfriend, he shoots men in the face and laughs about the blood. We never know why he's this callous, and the plot never gets us to care, either.
Wesley Snipes has really shown great talent in other films, but again it just feels like he's wasted here. He gets perhaps the most cliched lines of the group. He's worried about losing his son to a new 'father' when his ex-wife finds someone else to be with. He wants to run off with the prostitute. He wants to revenge his fallen cop friend no matter what it takes. And yet - it is amazing how many very obvious clues he misses.
I'd rent this one first to see how you like it. Maybe the big band scenes will appeal to you, or maybe watching so many good actors in unusual roles will give you different insights into their acting skills. It's not a movie I personally would own for repeated re-watchings, though.
Boiling Point (1993).......2006-01-01
Director: John B. Harris
Cast: Wesley Snipes, Dennis Hopper, Lolita Davidovich, Viggo Mortensen, Seymour Cassel, Jonathan Banks, Christine Elise, Tony Lo Bianco, Dan Hedaya.
Running Time: 92 minutes
Rated R for langauge and violence.
"Boiling Point is too pithy to be a successful thriller; too low profile to be a successful action caper. If the plot had thrown more twists, offered more insight on the characters psyche, or had a much more involving story, the film could have sufficed even as a decent thriller. Had there been explosives, chase scenes, and other good action ploys, this movie could've made a decent action film; however, it is not much of either category, thus suffering from mediocrity. Police detective, Jimmy Mercer (Wesley Snipes) and his partner, Brady (Dan Hedaya), are investigating the shooting death of an undercover U.S. Treasury agent who investigating a counterfeit ring. The two guys who he was dealing with, gunned him down and fled the scene, before Mercer and Brady could intervene and save their partner. Turns out the murderers are fast-talking Red Diamond (Dennis Hopper), so named because of his red hair, who owes fifty grand to another gangster within seven days and his partner, Ronnie (Viggo Mortensen), an eerie kind of guy who is never sure if Red is just handing him a line of garbage with all the schemes he involves him in. In order to make it through the next week alive, these two crooks need a get rich quick counterfeit scheme.
Meanwhile, Mercer and Brady are going from one informant to another, trying to get them to give up information about Red and Ronnie, a description, their location, anything. Sometimes they're successful and sometimes not. The movie goes on and on like as the two trail one person after another trying to get close on the trail of Red and Ronnie. It is wholly uninteresting, offering no real suspense and even less action to fill the time. The movie fails to deliver any real substance in between, which is sad when you consider the possibility of your characters, and especially, the potential of the actors. At points this is an enjoyable cop thriller but for the majority it is a misjudged affair that lacks either an emotionally involving depth or a fast paced tension that holds you. The problem is that it cannot decide which of these it wants to do and it is not good enough to manage to both in the way. Snipes does try hard but he can't get a human face that we buy into, specifically his "running away with hooker" thing is just laughably unconvincing. Hopper seems to be in another film and enjoys just wining and dining women but he only serves to slow the film down and distract from the main thread. Mortensen plays a standard role but does it pretty well, likewise Davidovich does well with what little she has. Support from familiar faces such as Cassel, Banks and Gleason all give the impression of a film deep in quality but sadly this is only an impression. Overall, this is a fairly poor film that tried to be better than the genre but failed to achieve its goals. In a plot that resembles the later "Heat", the threads don't work, with no emotional involvement in the characters and no thrills or tension to really speak of. The cast deserved better and so do the audience; there are several cop thrillers that try the same thing as Boiling Point, it would be to your advantage to watch one of the ones that actually does it well.
Slow moving!!.......2005-03-21
This film is much like a 1940's film noir. This is not one of Wesley Snipes best. I found the dialogue to be unbelievable. The story is slow moving, which does the film no favors. It winds up to be a disappointing venture for Snipes & Dennis Hopper, who was wasted in his role.
Dream (when you're feeling blue)... amazing music.......2005-01-05
I quite like this unpretentious film noir. It's not the best script in the world, and Wesley Snipes plays a wooden stereotype, but the acting of the two bad guys carries the film. Dennis Hopper has never given a better performance and Viggo Mortensen's handsome, easygoing killer is quite disturbing. The charm of this film revolves around these two conmen. Their self-deceptive patter, Hopper's frequent refrain of "...and that's no lie!", Mortensen's extreme violence forgotten within seconds, the down-at-heel diners, the live band at the Palace dance hall, Hopper's dancing with a wryly amused hooker, the pathos of his long suffering girlfriend left standing alone outside in her blue dress as he's driven away by Snipes at the end... all somehow add up to more than the individual parts.
I'm here because like an earlier reviewer I was blown away by the Big Band music and have been trying to find out who performed it. There is no soundtrack available and the band and singers don't seem to be credited anywhere. If anyone can cast any light I'd be most grateful.

Always bet on Snipes.......2006-05-27
Wesley Snipes is an underrated actor, simply put. Want proof? Just watch these two movies. Snipes pretty much carries both movies and makes them what they are - which are classic Snipes action movies. With such classic lines as "Always bet on Black," roundhouse kicks, and overall badassness, Snipes shows why he is the black Chuck Norris.
You can but other movie combos of Snipes movies, but these are two of this best and some of my favorites. The only thing that prevented me from giving this 5 stars are the other actors. If you're looking for great action movies, classic 90s movies, or something along the lines of "Die Hard," "Lethal Weapon," or possibly "48 Hours" then you need to get his DVD now.

Japanese TV star, comedian, and sophomore director "Beat" Takeshi Kitano added screenwriter to his résumé for his second feature, the offbeat story of meek, passive gas station attendant and benchwarming minor-league baseball player Masaki (Masahiko Ono), who finally rebels against the insults and abuse. His timing couldn't be worse, however, for he lashes out against an ill-mannered yakuza soldier. When the local crime boss embarks on a campaign of harassment and beatings aimed at Masaki's coworkers and baseball teammates, Masaki flies off to Yokohama to buy a gun, and falls in with a charismatic but brutal gangster (Takeshi) who has his own score to settle with the yakuza. Perhaps Kitano's most oblique film, Boiling Point is made up primarily of digressions, notably the rambling middle, where Takeshi's disgraced mobster takes Masaki and his pal on a tour of local nightlife, a sequence of pokerfaced gags and dry, ironic humor twisted around Takeshi's brutal, misogynist antics. The film lacks the drive and compelling narrative of Takeshi's other gangster pictures (notably his masterpiece, Sonatine, which revives many of the cinematic ideas first explored in this film), but rises to life in some astounding sequences: a flashforward delivered as an adrenaline rush of images, the chilling yet comic eruption of a bouquet of flowers, and an underplayed apocalyptic climax, followed by a tender coda. --Sean Axmaker
Customer Reviews:
There is not one for you........2006-05-22
Seemingly lost in his own world, Masaki lives his life in a constant haze. Completely unmotivated, Masaki's friends and colleagues almost have to force him to participate in local sandlot baseball games and his work as a gas station attendant. After one game in which Masaki struck out without even trying to swing the bat, Masaki gets into a scuffle with a yakuza who is a member of the Otomo group. Stating that his man's arm has been broken, the branch boss of the Otomo group pays the owner of the gas station a visit and informs him that he had better make amends with the "injured" yakuza. Learning about the scuffle, the coach of Masaki's baseball team Ishida, a former high ranking yakuza, promises to straighten things out for the younger man. Ishida does in fact beat up the branch boss, but the man's underlings soon beat him up. In order to make amends with his coach, Masaki and a friend make their way down to Okinawa to purchase a pistol. However, they find a bit more than what they bargained for.
After being told to return some money the next day and to cut off his finger, Uehara, Beat Takeshi, takes his frustrations out on a car by repeatedly kicking the door of a car. It is at this time that Masaki and his friend come upon the scene. Uehara, his right hand man Tamagi, and his girlfriend Fumiyo take the two men from Tokyo to a bar where amongst the smoke and karaoke Uehara and Tamagi beat up two men brutally. This is just the beginning of a couple of days of violence.
Considered one of Kitano's lesser films by many, Boiling Point is a slow paced movie that has some explosive bursts of violence. Also this film displays the image of the sea that is a trademark of Kitano's films and like Sonatine, Hana-bi, and much later parodied in Takeshis', the sea is the locale of both play and violence. Also, unlike many of Kitano's other violent characters, Uehara seems to lack the tender core that made characters such as Hana-bi's Nishi likeable in his stony way. However, in this film, Uehara is the type who forces his friend to have sex with his lover and thereafter beats his lover Fumiyo on the head because she should not have slept with Tamagi even though she was told to. Add to this a couple of instances of rape, one male and one female; the total package is a completely unwholesome character. Looking back, Boiling Point is indeed a flawed film, but one can see the elements that would one day make Kitano an internationally acclaimed director. Recommended for fans of Japanese film, highly recommended for fans of Kitano Takeshi.
Simple fun, but the ending ruins the whole film.......2004-07-12
Takeshi Kitano before his epic Sonatine was a very mixed bag of tricks with his filmography. Violent Cop used most of his trademarks lightly, the only one focused on in Violent Cop was the violence and slience. Even though this is a weaker film, it is a step foward for Kitano with his trademark style of violence, humor, silence and subtlety.
But I have some major issues with this film. First off, it's extremely slow. I mean SLOW. It's the slowest film I've ever seen. The first 40 minutes has maybe one or two things that have to do with the plot, it's like Kitano left the film on the cutting floor and took it as it is. Another issue is how shallow the film is, everyone is a negative, unhappy person. Kitano is known for having many different characters in his films that potray all the emotions he should be. But here everyone is gloomy and sad, including the main character.
But those issues are the main problems with the film. One thing I found interesting more rather then entertaining was the use of no music. I mean no music at all, no Joe Hisaishi tunes or simple beats. Nothing, it makes the film feel way more real life and it's interesting to see. Another is the weird editing and camerawork. In one scene a guy in a baseball field runs back and forth trapped in between bases, the camera is on the second base in a first person type image. It's actually funny. I won't go too much into the story, try to read the story rundown elsewhere. But the last thing that interested me was the randomness. Humor and violence come out of nowhere in small doses, and have less to do with the film itself. Fights on the sidewalk, car and motorcycle crashes, shootings, beatings and rape seem to come and go, that also makes the film feel more real life.
But as a Kitano film, it's a huge letdown if you're expecting something like Hana Bi (Fireworks), Sonatine or Violent Cop. It's a simple story told in the Kitano narrative.
Hardly recommended for Kitano fans.

Boiling Point is less of a plot driven movie than the summaries indicate... the best way to describe it would be the thick gauze wrap around a severed finger of a plot. A sort of pseudo-revenge epic that contains less gun-fu than the cover would seem to indicate, and about the equivalent of fifteen minutes of plot from a typical action flick. It composes itself with oddball jokes and deadpans, and the moments loosely organized around the plot and their cast of characters, most of whom fall into descriptions ranging from "eccentricly normal", "psychopathically eccentric", and "stereotyped".
If you're familiar with Kitano's penchant oddball gags and Jarmusch-like deadpans, airiness, and genre inversions, you know what to expect here, if you're just looking for a fast paced gangster or action movie, look elsewhere (and please stop writing 1 star reviews). I loved it.
Not a good movie..........2001-10-01
I am a big fan of Japanese and Hong Kong movies. This is by far one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I actually stopped watching it after an hour (if you find scenes of someone walking silently for two minutes interesting this is for you!)
Try "Made in Hong Kong" instead - an excellent film.
Kept me glued........2001-08-08
A twisting story line and beautiful cinematography. Confused and confusing characters.
Last shot will have you re-think the whole movie and explains the choppy, sometimes inconsistent, narrative and players.
Something different. Loved it. Give it a shot.

Based on a true story - In the early 1980's, during the early stages of the Central American civil wars, the U.S. Government petitioned a group of young, Blacks from the ghetto to bring drugs into impoverished South Central L.A.. The American CIA, with the intention of supporting the rebels in Nicaragua, began a conspiracy in which it traded guns to the Central American rebels in exchange for large supplies of cocaine.
