Although billed as "The Motion Picture," Saiyuki: Requiem (2001) is actually an OAV that continues the popular broadcast series. Sanjo Genzo and his motley crew, Sha Goyjo, Cho Hakkai, and Son Goku, are once again en route to India when they meet Horan, a young woman fleeing a monster that proves unusually difficult to kill. To thank them for her rescue, Horan invites the quartet back to the extravagant palace of her "master," Go Dogan. After a sumptuous dinner that delights Goku, the wanders retire to their rooms, where they're visited by murderous doppelgangers of each other. Naturally, Sanjo discovers the source of the evil and dispatches Dogan with a little assistance from his companions. The story contains few surprises, but the four adventurers provide the special brand of quarrelsome cool that won the series so many fans. (Rated 15 and older: nudity, violence, grotesque imagery, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
Description
What motivates a cynical, gun-toting monk and his unruly band of misfits to head into the heart of demon territory to stop the experiments to revive Gyomaoh? It takes more than the ability to kick butt to be considered a part of the Sanzo party. It takes a seriously bad attitude.

4 out of 5 stars Saiyuki Requiem.......2007-04-14

This movie was very good. It continues the feel of the anime. All your favorite characters appear including Kougaiji and his crew.

I do feel that the villian in this movie however was a bit pathetic and they could of done more with him.

Overall though I am satisfied with this movie as I am a fan of the series and adore anything pertaining to Saiyuki.

4 out of 5 stars Gensomaden Saiyuki: Requiem for the One Not Chosen.......2005-03-14

I only rented this movie from Blockbusters, and that is what I recomend doing. It is entertaining, but not really worth buying. I enjoyed seeing the Sanzo group again, and there's a scene with Gojyo in the shower, but the plot was a bit predictable and done before. It felt like I was just watching an episode, not really a movie, which I don't really mind, I just thought was worth comment. The movie starts off with a kind of annoying fight scene where the group takes on a battalion of demons and wins easily, and then moves on to the story. They save a girl Houran from this flying monster, and she invites them to stay at her home. Of course, this turns out to be a trap. The master of her home is someone from their past who they had passed over (I won't say who, coz that would ruin the story) and is using orange paper airplanes as shikigami to make evil copies of the Sanzo group to slowly pick them off. The bad guy wears a really creepy mask for most of the movie, then when he takes it of he turns out to be realy hot (He wasn't originally, and he soon gets ugly again, so savor the few moments when he's good looking). Meanwhile, all throughout there's a kind of sub plot with Kougaiji and his group, but they're not really that important. They just kind of explain things past. Anyway, it's worth renting, but probably not buying. And as always, don't bother with the English, just watch it in Japanese. Subtitles aren't that much extra work, don't be lazy.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great movie.......2005-03-01

Saiyuki is a fun show and this movie just pulls it all together. This movie takes you through the characters pasts and shows how they all became friends and things throughout their time spent together. The show is awesome and the movie is great cause its just great. Its saiyuki whats there not to like. Well its good go buy it. Its also very funny!

5 out of 5 stars The last of a great thing........2005-02-09

This direct to video movie is a great addition to the original Saiyuki series (now being repackaged as the Double Barrel collection). It has all the great spirit, artwork, and attitude of these 4 guys we love to watch...If you enjoyed the 50 episode series, you'll enjoy this stand alone movie.

And for those who enjoy the english dubbed version (which happens to fit the characters and spirit of the Japanese version remarkably well), this is your last opportunity to hear the Sanzo party as we know them. The next Saiyuki series, Reload, has been released by a different company so none of the english voice actors will be the same! I'm trembling in fear at the thought of who will replace the voices we know and love...

5 out of 5 stars The Sanzo Party Is Back!.......2005-01-23

The Sanzo party has always been haunted by the past, and most of the time they've been able to deal with their ghosts. But when they enter The House of Dougan, they may not be so lucky! Lured to the mysterious shrine by a beautiful girl, Sanzo, Goku, Gojyo, and Hakkai become ensnared in a trap of dangerous shikigami, murderous doppelgangers, and a malevolent monster who has destroyed his own soul for a demented purpose.
