Clint Eastwood is a down-and-out cop who is sent on a routine mission to pick up a witness and deliver her to the Phoenix courthouse. Sounds easy until he realizes he's been set up by the man who gave him this simple assignment. The interplay between Eastwood and the witness, a clever prostitute played by the actor's former girlfriend, Sondra Locke, is tough and playful. They obviously had strong chemistry. The story is highly implausible at times, but the action sequences are satisfying. Eastwood directs The Gauntlet very much in the style of his Academy Award-winning Western Unforgiven. Although the body count is surprisingly low for an Eastwood action film, a house, several cars, and a large bus get shot through with more holes than a big wheel of Swiss cheese. For Eastwood fans, this is the laconic hero at his prime. --Richard Natale

Customer Reviews:
Ridiculously entertaining.......2007-05-06
A one-time Steve McQueen-Barbra Streisand vehicle until McQueen met Streisand, and subsequently a Clint Eastwood-Streisand vehicle until Eastwood met Streisand, The Gauntlet sees Clint sending up his Dirty Harry image as a none-too-smart washed out drunken cop escorting Sondra Locke's foul-mouthed "nothing witness in a nothing trial" from Las Vegas to Phoenix and finding the Mob and every cop in two States determined to stop them - even the Vegas bookies are taking bets on ever-lengthening odds (70-1) on their not making it. From the days when Clint still made films in broad daylight and could film interiors without turning all the lights out and seen as wildly over the top at the time (even the famed Frank Frazetta poster art, sadly not used on this DVD, offered Clint as a Conan-esque muscular figure in ripped shirt with girl in one hand and gun in the other), now it's almost an exercise in naturalism for the genre. Sure there's more firepower on display that in all of Eastwood's previous films combined (including both Where Eagles Dare and Kelly's Heroes!), with cars, houses and buses shot to pieces with gleeful abandon while helicopters crash into power lines, but somehow Michael Butler and Dennis Shryack's script manages to sell the increasing absurdities in a perfectly conceived audience picture that's designed to entertain and does just that.
There's a nice line in self-deprecating wit that never quite crosses the line into outright stupidity and Eastwood's tight direction keeps the action moving without losing sight of the fact that it's the characters that really need to sell the film. Just as importantly the onscreen relationship between Eastwood and Locke hadn't overstayed its welcome yet as it quickly would over their subsequent films, their initial vicious sparring giving way to genuinely convincing tenderness in the later scenes, giving you a pair you can actually root for. Great fun if you're not expecting gritty realism - like the end credit says, `Law enforcement procedures depicted in this film do not necessarily depict those of any law enforcement agency mentioned herein.' No **** Sherlock.
The 2.35:1 widescreen transfer is acceptable but not always as good as it could be. The only extra is the original theatrical traler, narrated by, of all people, Casey Kassem!
Fun and Entertaining!.......2007-03-09
What can I say if you like Clint Eastwood your going to like this movie. I Have not seen this movie since it played at my local drive-in! What memories!
eastwood great as always, everything else.....eh.......2007-02-09
Being a big Eastwood fan, I bought this unseen and watched it for the first time last night. Eastwood is great, as always, although his cop character in this one displays a little more vulnerability than most of his tough guy roles. Locke's acting is over-the-top and annoying, as always. This is a pretty good action movie, but the ending is ridiculous. After blasting the hell out of this bus, the cops are just going to let Eastwood walk up the steps of city hall with a gun tucked into his waistband? I mean, no one says a word to him. And on top of that, he takes the assistant d.a. hostage and Locke's character shoots the police commissioner dead in front of the entire Phoenix police department, and nobody does a damn thing? Are you kidding? I'm all for suspending a sense of reality when watching action movies, but give me a break. This ain't no academy-award winner. Eastwood is the only thing saving this turkey.
"The Gauntlet" is hardly one of Eastwood's most substantial works..........2006-12-31
The challenge of playing the cop, Ben Shockley, in "The Gauntlet" was that the character was virtually the opposite of Harry Callaghan: he's a loser, a man resigned to doing twenty years in the force and then looking forward to collecting his pension... His car is full of empty whiskey bottles, his life is a shambles, he's never even been given a big case let alone solved one... He is sent from Phoenix to Las Vegas to 'bring back a nothing witness for a nothing trial'.
The 'nothing' witness, Gus Mally, is not the man he expects; in the first place she's a woman, Augusta Mally, secondly she's a hooker, thirdly, despite her non-stop profanities, she's a graduate of Finch College and lastly - and hereby hangs the tale - she's not a 'nothing witness'. The mob who are to be tried will do anything to prevent her testifying...
The dangers inherent in their journey together only slow1y become apparent to Shockley despite the fact that the Vegas police literally raze to the ground the couple's initial hideaway, while they remain inside almost to the last moment...
Within the turbulent situation, Shockley and Mally manage to transform their original dislike for each other and each other's way of life into a love of sorts, in the 'African Queen type tradition.' As the couple begins to understand each other, they realize how their relationship could serve each other... She would no longer need to be a whore... He could regain his self-esteem as a policeman... Shortly before the final showdown Mally telephones her mother to say she has found her man; from then on there is an added imperative that they survive in order to give their love and their relationship a chance to work out...
Sondra Locke achieved the improbably-written transformation from hooker to sociologist convincingly... But in this film, more than ever, Eastwood wasn't trying for any praise or approval from the critics; probably the reverse... The overkill is part of the entertainment' he claimed.' You just have to accept it on an outrageous level.' There were those who didn't...
But these comments only served to inform Eastwood that at least he had been excessive enough to upset some people... It would be awful to think you're being outrageous and to outrage nobody... But Eastwood knew just how far he could take an audience with him... By surviving the unsurvivable, Eastwood proved to himself once more that the mass audience will suspend all sensible disbelief - as they do in the best of the Bond films - providing the action carries them and their fantasies along...
In the context of many of his other films, "The Gauntlet" is hardly one of Eastwood's most substantial works... The appeal of an unlikely love affair between opposites, fertilized by an unceasing barrage of gunfire was undoubted1y considerable... But as a whole, the film tended to operate rather as an exercise in special effects than as any more considered piece of social statement of the kind that gave such strength to "Dirty Harry."
Good Action, loved it Clint the best.......2006-12-06
After Dirty Harry where else do you go.Your now Ben Shockley escort cop, to your girlfriend Sandra Locke.Pretty decent actioner for these two.
The film was fun because I'd seen this flim when I was 16 yrs old.
I like Clint Eastwood in the western films 60's and 70's I was all was a big fan of this actor when I seen him a "A FEW DOLLAR MORE" "THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY".Some people say this was not a good film but I took too this film when the "cops" shot up the motel ben and gus were staying how in the world can you get out of there man go thu a undergound tunnel that's the best. The bus great scene cop blasting the bus and it's still moving. And find out his BOSS is the bad guy after all great movie time for a remake.

Great 3 Episodes but you Save Money by Buying the First Season.......2006-06-19
I love these three epsidoes which introduced Xena and they are essentail if you are a Hercules or Xena fan. If you want to buy them though I would suggest buying the complete first season of Hercules. You get five full tv movies, these three episodes, and ten more episodes for fifteen dollars. You save eight dollars and you get so much more.
good episodes, overpriced.......2006-05-13
These 3 episodes of Hercules the Legendary journeys are available here for one price, but are also available as part of Hercules Season One for a lower price, (plus you get the rest of the season) and you can see the episodes in context. Also Herc season 1 contains 5 tv movies, 3 of which are really quite good. (the 1st is a bit weak and the 5th is a re-hash of the other four) Movie 1 has Lucy Lawless in a non-xena bit part, and Movie 2 has Renee O'Connor in a featured role. So if you get that set you'll get everything you get here, plus a lot more stuff, and it is A LOT CHEAPER.
GREAT!!!!.......2005-03-01
this is a great dvd, I advise this item for any die-hard xena fan! But only one problem, there are no special feature's! No commentary no nothing and that's a waist! Well I hope this review was helpful to anyone!
this sux.......2004-07-06
this item is soo bad dont buy it its very boring n not helpful i recomend u buy seasons.
Entertaining, but different than you may expect........2004-01-06
Before you watch this DVD, keep in mind that they are episodes of Hercules, and are quite different. It isn't the best...at this point, the character of Xena had a lot of bugs to work out. Her outfit is black instead of brown, her hair is lighter, and although she has her shakram, her battle cry needed a LOT of work. Lucy Lawless' acting skills aren't quite as good as you can imagine, when compared to later episodes of Xena. The episodes are entertaining enough, and it's good to know how Xena came about, but I'm still wondering why they call her warrior princess. The DVD lacks bonus features, and there is no chaptering and it starts out with the first episode instead of the Menu. You have to go through the menu to switch episodes and the menu iself is pretty boring, with no intros or animations. Despite these facts, I still think they are worth watching and adding to and Xena fan collection.

Great Eastwood Double Feature.......2005-05-28
Filmed more than 20 years apart, these two great thrillers, directed by and starring our guy Clint have a similiar themes. He plays both a washed up cop and hasbeen reporter. He is given assignments that seem trivial to him, and in both cases turn into some great thrill rides.
"The Gauntlet" (1977)
Eastwood gives us an early taste of his brillant directorial style.
From the moment Ben Shockley(Eastwood)steps out of his car and an empty booze bottle falls out, we know this is not the usual "Dirty Harry" character we'd been used to up to now. Ben is a cop who's chances for greatness seem to be fading with him.
The Phoenix P.D. seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel when they assign Shockley the job of escorting Gus Malley, a seemingly unimportant witness from Las Vegas back to Phoenix for a trial. Ben's been looking for his big break on a big case and it doesn't look like this will be it with this guy. Upon arriving in Las Vegas, Ben discovers that Gus is no guy. Gus Malley(Sondra Locke), is a local prostitute and unwilling partcipant in the journey back as well. This is not "a hooker with a heart story" though, this pro is as hard edged as they come, but she does have a brain!
The action starts as soon as they leave the jail. Someone is going to make sure that these two never make it to trial. Vegas is even giving odds against them. Everyone's after them..the mob, the cops, they even made the mistake of angering a group of bikers along the route and they're out for revenge as well. They hardly know who to trust, as they get shot at from all angles, cars blow up, they are set up and beat up. What Gus knows can cost them their lives, but Shockley is now determined to bring his prisoner in at all costs and rises to the occassion and must break through an impassable barrier set-up to keep him at bay.
It's edge of your seat drama, thrills, and fun, as Gus and Ben trade quips and get in a little romance(we couldn't expect any different with Eastwood and Locke)along the way. As usual Clint surrounds himself with the finest talent. Pat Hingle, William Prince, and Bill Mckinney turn in excellent performances as well as Eastwood and Locke. There's also a terrific jazzy score by Jerry Fielding.
The film made in 1977 looks and sounds great on this DVD transfer.
"True Crime" (1999)
Eastwood plays reporter Steve Everett, who puts his job on the line and his family on hold to prove the innocence of an unjustly condemned man. He was given the story as a human interest piece, a story that was to depict the last few hours in the life of Frank Beechum(Isaiah Washington). He is at odds with his editor and is warned not to turn the story into a "Dick Tracey investigation".
Steve is alot of things. He's an alcoholic(on the wagon),a womanizer, and lacks in the qualities needed to be a good father and husband to his family. But one thing he does have, is his reporter's instinct. He has "his nose" for the truth. He senses something fishy about the case which has already gone through numerous appeals, and with only hours to the execution, starts digging around, and takes us on a thrilling ride as he tries, up to the very last second, to save Frank from the death penalty.
There is another storyline that runs parallel to the main focus of the film. The two families each going through their own personal anguishes. Frank's family, his wife and little girl, going through the agonizing last few hours with him, and Steve's wife and child must deal with his indiscretions and inattention to his own daughter. The wives played by Lisa Gay Hamilton and Diane Venora are expert at showing us the emotional states they are in. The little girls played by Penny Bae Bridges and Francesca Fisher-Eastwood(his real life daughter) are also terrific at making emotional demands on their Daddies at a time of crisis.
Eastwood's expertise behind the camera, as well as his powerful on screen presence combined with a terrific cast and crew to bring us a thrilling and moving story. Many wonderful performances add to it. James Woods, Dennis Leary and Bernard Hill to start with. Frances Fisher(the film is a bit of a family affair)plays the D.A., Michael Jeeter and Michael Mckean also give fine performances, and to my delight Christine Ebersole makes an appearance as well as the legendary William Windom(check behind the bar for him).Music by Lennie Niehaus and photography by Jack Green are the icing on the cake.
The DVD picture is perfect and distingishable even in the darker scenes.Colors are pleasing and vibrant, and the sound excellent.
This was Clint's 21st film as a director. He has a way of reaching an audience that touches the humanness in us that only gets better with each film.
A great combo package for collectors of Clint. Both films are enjoyable time after time....get the popcorn ready and enjoy....Laurie

CAVEAT EMPTOR.......2005-05-11
BUYER BEWARE! This looks like a lowball of a deal if you consider that most of the movies depicted are the worst Hollywood has ever produced and delivered. I would look at the reviews and perhaps rent each individual movie before you by them all together. Here's a view of some of them:
'The Big Red One': Without question one of the worst WWII/D-Day films ever produced in every respect (technically and historically.) The film stars Lee Marvin who's much too old to play a grunt on the beaches of Normandy. The film is riddled with cliches and bad scenes from beginning to end. It wasn't even filmed in Europe but Israel. Yes, the coasts and beaches in Israel look so much like Normandy it's striking! It's about as bad as setting Auschwitz in Death Valley for a Holocaust film.
'The Gauntlet': Dirty Harry-type Eastwood movie where he's got to protect a witness against corrupt cops. Not a bad movie but not his best either: far below his Dirty Harry films or his westerns.
'Point of No Return': American version of "La Femme Nikita" starring Bridget Fonda. O.K. but the French version was better and more realistic.
'The Sea Wolves': Humor-action WWII movie starring Roger Moore. This one is actually pretty good with a lot of action.
'Soldier': Probably the worst movie that Kurt Russel ever starred in where he has an even smaller script than Schwarzeneger in "Terminator." Pathetic: not even worth watching once.
'Tango and Cash': Comedy-action cop movie with Kurt Russel and Sylvester Stallone. O.K. but after a while you begin to wonder whether you're laughing at the film or the fact that this was even made into a movie.
'Victory': Good movie about a soccer team of prisoners in WWII starrring Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone. This film is probably the best one out of the entire selection.
'When Trumpets Fade': Another one of the absolutely worst war films ever produced regarding the obscure battle of Hurtigen Forest at the close of WWII in Europe. A pathetic film with a horrible screenplay and equally disgraceful acting: avoid like the plague! I got it for free as a bonus to buying 'Band of Brothers' and I threw it away after one viewing as I couldn't stop laughing as to how bad this movie was.
Save your money and buy the few good films in this packet separately. Most of the movies in this package are not worth buying trust me!
They have got to be kidding........2005-03-20
There are maybe two OK movies in this "Deal", the rest are junk. I do not want to own any of them personally. The best part is the deal itself. Every single one of these movies can be had for less than ten bucks. If they chopped the first number of the price, they might be able to call it a deal.
It is a bad deal........2004-11-18
With the market for the DVD's being so competetive you can buy these DVDs individually at a much cheaper price than as an action pack on amazon. Don't be fooled go else where. The movies are good so I'd get them just not all at once like this.

Not terribly useful collection.......2003-09-12
While the movies here in and of themselves are not 'bad' movies, unless you really want to buy them all you would probably be better off seeking the specific movies that you want rather than coughing up $115 for them here.
Some Winners and Some Losers.......2003-09-10
This is an interesting set of DVDs.
There are some good films here and some not so great.
"The Big Red One" is a much overlooked war film starring, believe it or not, Mark Hamill of "Star Wars" fame. The story is told very well.
"Fort Apache, The Bronx" stars Paul Newman and is really not so bad a cop film. If you like that genre, this is a good addition to your collection. Again, a well told story, if not a little dated.
"The Gauntlet" is a pretty good Clint Eastwood movie from 1977. Not one of his best, but not one of his worst either.
"Point of No Return" is the American version of "LaFemme Nikita" starring Bridget Fonda. The original is the better movie, but this one works. Its a fun watch.
"Ricochet" stars a pre-Oscar win Denzel Washington and a very over the top John Lithgow. It passes for entertainment, but barely. Lindsay Wagner shows up, if that helps.
"Soldier" is a Kurt Russel movie that he worked out for. Nice pecs, Kurt.
"Tango and Cash" is actually a pretty good film. Importantly, it does NOT take itself too seriously and it fun to watch. It stars Kurt Russel and Sylvester Stallone in their prime action-hero days.
"Victory" is a great film. The best featured here. It is placed in a concentration camp in WWII and its about soccer. You're intrigued, right? Its actually a very good movie, uplifting and well told. Again we have Sylvester Stallone and he's joined by Michael Caine and Pele (soccer superstar).
Obviously, there are some good films in this collection. Dont write it off without a consideration.
